At GIMA, we were pleased to have been able to work across the industry with our fellow trade bodies, the HTA, GCA and LOFA in order to support our respective members through the difficult early stages of lockdown, and then once again when we emerged to unprecendented demand for gardening products.
With an influx of around 3 million new gardeners, and the restrictions we are all being forced to come to terms with for the forseable future, it looks like interest in our homes and gardens will continue into 2021 and beyond.
Despite the difficulties we all faced, our members have continued to invest in growth by developing new products, packaging and merchandising solutions for the garden retail channel. It’s a tremendous achievement that our members have delivered such innovation whilst overcoming the twin obstacles of COVID secure working, combined with unprecedented supply chain demand.
The absence of Glee at the NEC this year sadly means no GIMA innovators seed corn fund competition or winner this year, but we are committed to bringing this back next year to ensure we support exciting new entrants into our market.
It’s clearly going to be a few months before we can all meet up again, and we are hopeful that we will be able to welcome you all on July 15th for the rescheduled 40th GIMA awards at the Celtic Manor. But don’t forget we have a packed winter program of virtual events, including webinars, buyer connect sessions and panel discissions to look forward to in the meantime.

Winterfuel experts Dizmezs Ltd are launching READYBLAZE, a new firewood brand for the UK Garden Centre market.
The brand marries superior performance with environmentally friendly features. Every piece of timber in their firewood products is kiln dried to under 20% moisture content level, leading to cleaner, hotter flames and less harmful emissions.
Dizmezs operate a large 110,000 square metre manufacturing hub in Latvia which has an 18,000 square metre warehouse. The site has modern processing facilities, including a sawmill, a dimension mill and splitting and drying equipment. By using state-of-the-art processes and historic knowledge, the consistency and quality of their products have been refined and perfected since they were established in 1996.
Product Range
The range consists of kiln dried hardwood split logs, ideal for use on stoves, open fires and chimineas. In addition to Birch logs, READYBLAZE also offer more premium options such as Ash, which burn hotter and longer than Birch logs.

The good news: the annual dynamics of the search for the LECHUZA brand in Google is characterised by a twofold increase of the interest in the brand.
In spring and summer, the demand for garden plants and planters for them is traditionally changing. And we are talking not only about its increase, but also about a qualitative change.
In place of one - the usual models and shades for interior decoration - come others, more appropriate for the street. Other textures, colours, shapes – below, we talk about this in the context of LECHUZA models, which are in special demand in the summer season.
Popular textures and shades
It is no secret that the favourites for decorating compositions with living plants in the garden, on the balcony or terrace are wicker planters (in the LECHUZA line these are models from the Cottage Collection). Such textures create a special mood for summer, relaxation and country life.
Stone and its imitation are the next trend of the summer assortment (in the LECHUZA line, these are models from the Stone Collection). A planter of natural shades with a surface under a natural stone plus greens of plants, is a bliss with the nature of a special level!

Glee went digital on September 15-16 2020 with the launch of its very first virtual forum. Created in response to visitor and exhibitor demand, Glee Gathering was designed to bring our industry together, even when we were physically apart.
With community ever at the heart of what we do, Glee Gathering provided a hub for the industry, bringing together the key elements of what makes Glee one of the UK’s most important retail trade shows. The innovative virtual forum brought registrants key industry insights, essential networking opportunities and a first-hand look at the latest products, trends and collections.
Networking is one of the most important elements of Glee, so Glee Gathering’s virtual meeting’s system proved key for buyers and brands alike. Providing instant access to contacts involved in Glee Gathering, the platform allowed attendees to connect with one another and chat online, as well as providing an instant discovery platform allowing buyers and suppliers to arrange and participate in one-to-one video meetings directly on the platform for the duration of the event.
Hosting an exclusive content programme, Glee Gathering provided access to of-the-minute industry intel, trend insights, peer-to-peer panel sessions, and more. Among the speaker line-up were Helen Waddington from Perennial, Lynsey Swales from Social B, Trevor Pfeiffer from Garden Trade News and a host of other experts from across the horticultural and retail industries.
Glee Gathering also hosted an impressive array of brands from across the garden care, landscaping, hospitality, plants, outdoor entertainment and home sectors. Dedicated Virtual Showrooms provided buyers with an easy and accessible way to discover new brands and see what their current partners have to offer.
The Glee Gathering Product Showcase sessions gave brands even more opportunity to communicate with prospective customers, taking buyers through their latest collections. The Product Showcase offered exhibitors the chance to submit a 5-minute video to be shown to buyers during a sector-specific time slot. Sector categories will include: Garden Centres; Outdoor Entertainment and Decoration; Landscaping; Home and Gift; and Pets.
Last but not least, we couldn’t forget the exciting New Product Awards. The “Pitch It” sessions offered brands the opportunity to pitch their latest product to a panel of expert judges, whilst visitors were able to watch the pitches live and vote for their favourites. Pots & planters now available in new sizes & designs
Whether it’s a first-time grow-your-own project, the need for flexible planting options or simply as a way to add splashes of colour throughout the garden, the popularity of container gardening shows no signs of abating.
Looking ahead to 2021 Primeur has added a selection of new planters to its Eco Garden range, all made from 100% recycled rubber, meaning they are lightweight, weather-proof and durable so will not fade, rot, stain or crack no matter what the weather throws at them – something very few ceramic or concrete planters can boast.
New designs include the Octavia Planter in a 15cm size. Ideal for houseplants and smaller blooms, these planters are a great entry level product or add-on sales opportunity when positioned near houseplants, petite blooms and herb displays.

What is the difference between Anvil and Bypass Secateurs?

Anvil
The easiest way to understand how the Anvil action works is imagining a sharp knife on a chopping board. The downwards action of a thin edged, sharp blade onto a flat hard surface. One of the key benefits of the Anvil secateurs is the additional cutting power due to the larger cutting area between Anvil and blade. This makes pruning larger stems, dead woods and woodier stems easier.
Unlike many Anvil models available where the cutting blade is flat, like a kitchen knife, ARS have kept the curved cutting blade and added a slightly curved anvil to fit perfectly against the sharp edge from base to tip of the blade. This added detail helps keep the blade sharper for longer and increases the cutting power and effect across all types of stems.
Bypass
Now imagine two cutting blades passing by each other, scissor like, this is how the Bypass mechanism works. ARS ensure both upper and lower blades are forged and shaped to optimum hardness and sharpness before fine tuning the placement, so they create the ultimate smooth cutting action as the blades pass. The bypass model is what most gardeners, professional and beginner, will be most familiar with. Bypass secateurs offer an immaculate clear cut for pruning close to the bud with minimal risk of damaging the stem. This can be adapted across all types of pruning in your garden.
