Back by popular demand, our product digest will now be published twice a year to support our members’ innovation and their commitment to new products.

 

2020 saw the well documented heightened demand for garden products challenge everyone across the whole supply chain to keep things moving. With so many obstacles along the way, I’m proud of how we all kept delivering stock against all odds.

 

As the Government’s road map presents us with the way out of the pandemic, 2021 looks all set to be another incredibly busy year, with continued interest in the home and garden sector. But as suppliers, we still have challenges to deal with, such as new import procedures and costs, social distancing cost price inflation, product and packaging shortages, rising container and shipping costs, personnel issues to name just a few!

 

Despite these difficulties, our members will continue to rise to the challenge. I’m confident that they will keep the stock flowing, whilst looking ahead and investing in growth by developing new products, packaging and merchandising solutions for the garden retail chain.

 

Please take some time to read this digest which is dedicated to everything that’s new for the year ahead.

Replacing the old felted roofs with Onduline’s ONDUVILLA corrugated roofing tiles has ‘transformed’ the atmosphere at Preston Bisset Nurseries and Country Shop.

 

The family-run business in Buckingham initially used the ‘clay tile’ alternative, from Onduline Building Products, for a walkway that was erected to promote the sale of Christmas trees.

 

But, according to manager Oak Richardson, they were so pleased with the new look they decided to extend the makeover to the rest of the nursery.

 

 

And, they have had so many enquiries from people impressed by the 500 square metres of new roofing they are planning to stock ONDUVILLA for customers.

 

Oak said: “The clay tile look is very attractive. It looks like tiles, you can only really tell the difference when you are close up. The nursery is surrounded by countryside and it fits right in with the rural setting, as if it has always been there. It has changed the whole atmosphere of the place.

 

“When we were installing it, I must have been asked 20 or 30 times a day ‘where can I get this, can you sell it to me’? We are really pleased.”

Oak added: “The original buildings were former stables but now, with the addition of the ONDUVILLA roofing, they look like converted barns.”

 

The walkway erected in December is now The Pottery Barn, the car park has been resurfaced and there are plans to expand the shop and add an events building to host gardening workshops.

It has been a great start to the year for high quality coir growing media company Southern Trident. The company’s optimism for 2021 has been boosted by the results of independent growing trials featuring its leading Coco & Coir COCO BOOST peat-free compost.,,


 

It has been a great start to the year for high quality coir growing media company Southern Trident. The company’s optimism for 2021 has been boosted by the results of independent growing trials featuring its leading Coco & Coir COCO BOOST peat-free compost.

 

The trials were conducted by Stockbridge Technology Centre, the UK’s premier horticulture growing and testing facility. The trials tested the performance of COCO BOOST against the UK’s top selling composts to grow tomatoes and petunias. COCO BOOST produced petunias two and a half times the size of the best-selling peat-free compost and produced three and a half times more flowers. The tomato plants were 33% larger and grew much stronger root systems. Even against the best-selling peat-based compost, COCO BOOST produced petunia plants that were 7% larger producing 7% more flowers. This was similarly reflected in the tomato plants.

 

And the company is growing well too. Steve Harper, Southern Trident CEO, says: “Since engaging our new sales team at the beginning of 2021, and despite lockdown, we currently have more than 100 garden centre stockists across the four home nations - with more being added all the time. These include some of the most premier independent garden centres, plus groups like Blue Diamond, Dobbies and Klondyke.

Following an imposed year off in 2020, the leading trade association, GIMA, is pleased to confirm that its annual awards evening will be making its highly-anticipated return on November 11th, 2021.

 

Taking place at the ever-popular Celtic Manor Resort, this year’s event will be a night to remember, celebrating not just a return to normality but also the best that the garden retail sector has to offer.

 

Whilst the Covid pandemic resulted in the event being cancelled for the first time in its 40-year history in 2020, the industry has not stopped. Suppliers have stayed busy creating exciting new product, marketing and merchandising innovations throughout the 2020 and 2021 season. These launches and initiatives are what will be celebrated in a special glittering night of awards and merriment, with all of the usual categories – including the GCA Supplier of the Year (GCA), Gardenex Export Achievement and the Sword of Excellence (last won by Primeur in 2019) - set to make a return. A new Sustainability award will also be joining the line up to recognise a product, business initiative, or wider business ethos that demonstrates how suppliers are successfully driving the sustainability agenda.

 

Commenting on the welcome return of the GIMA Awards, GIMA Director, Vicky Nuttall said: “We could not be happier to confirm that the annual awards ceremony will be back later this year. I know how missed the event has been, so being able to confirm its return is a very special moment for us. 

 

“This year’s awards may be a little later in the year than we are used to but that won’t stop us celebrating in style! We are very much looking forward to throwing open the doors to Celtic Manor once again and being able to celebrate the incredible hard work that our suppliers have achieved in the face of adversity over the past two years.”

 

To mark the ruby anniversary of the event, GIMA is asking attendees to add a splash of red to their glad rags to help mark the celebrations even further.

Entry is now open!

Entry to the 2021 GIMA awards is now open. This year, the entry criteria has been extended to cover both the 2020 and 2021 season, giving suppliers the chance to showcase efforts that may have been missed during the pandemic. The closing date for entries will be 28th May, with the judging process taking place at the end of June at Warwick Racecourse. This year’s judges will include representatives from Bents Garden & Home, British Garden Centres, The Gardens Group, Altons Garden Centre, Dobbies and Wickes.

GIMA launches the UK garden industry’s first ‘Plastic Packaging Pledge’

GIMA has launched the industry’s first ‘Plastic Packaging Pledge’. The pledge is in response to the global impact of plastic packaging usage and the potential environmental damage this packaging can cause as a result of incorrect use and careless disposal...


 

GIMA has launched the industry’s first ‘Plastic Packaging Pledge’. The pledge is in response to the global impact of plastic packaging usage and the potential environmental damage this packaging can cause as a result of incorrect use and careless disposal.

 

Recognising that many of its members rely on plastic packaging for the safe storage and transportation of their products, the GIMA Plastic Packaging Pledge has been developed with the objective of minimising any adverse impact from all types of plastic packaging used in the garden products supply chain. The pledge uniquely establishes a set of achievable targets for all GIMA members to reduce their reliance on single-use plastic packaging and to improve the rates of recycling and reuse, including targets which align with the government’s proposed plastic tax (due to come into force in April 2022), which will see any business using plastic packaging which is less than 30% recycled content taxed at £200 per tonne.

 

To support GIMA members in meeting the pledge targets, the trade association has put in place a range of resources and access to specialist expertise. The programme will kick off with a series of online training webinars in late January, whilst a dedicated webpage, providing support and advice for members, has also been made available.

 

The GIMA Plastic Packaging Pledge states that, by 2025, member companies will:

  • Remove identified ‘problem plastics’
  • Eliminate unnecessary plastic packaging
  • 100% of all plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable
  • 70% of all plastic packaging to be effectively recycled or composted
  • 30% average recycled content across all plastic packaging

Vicky Nuttall, GIMA Director said: “It’s a fact that consumers are becoming increasingly knowledgeable and demanding of brands and manufacturers to respond to the issue of plastic waste. By creating the Plastic Packaging Pledge, we are not only supporting our members to make their businesses more sustainable but are also helping them respond to these emerging consumer demands; thereby building their competitiveness. “

 

GIMA is also working closely with the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) to ensure that the Plastic Packaging Pledge aligns with the HTA’s own sustainability strategy.
