The record June temperatures for 40 years took their toll on garden centre sales volumes last week. Garden Centre Bestsellers EPOS data analysis shows total unit sales dropping to the lowest level for the past four years, but higher than the same week in 2011.

The saving grace from a financial perspective will be the increases in sales of garden furniture and barbecues. Significant increases of these higher ticket items could mean many garden centres are still able to report June sales up year on year.

But from a volume sales and footfall point of view there is now significant ground to make up in the second half of the year.

We wonder how soon it will be before we see Christmas items going on display and selling through. Well the nights are drawing in now.
