Garden Trade News and spoga+gafa took a selection of Gold winners in this year's Greatest Outdoor Living Awards to Cologne to present their awards at the impressive show last weekend. Garden centres Whitehall Lacock, Perrywood, Gouldings and Chessington all celebrated success along with Norfolk Leisure who clinched the Supplier Gold.

"When the GTN team decided to take The Greatest Awards ON TOUR this year we had no idea that would involve a heatwave along the way. We’re used to floods and snow but Monday was the first time we’ve presented awards in near 40 degree temperatures," said awards organiser Trevor Pfeiffer.

Winners of The Greatest Outdoor Living Gold Awards made the journey to Cologne courtesy of spoga+gafa to receive their awards during a reception for UK exhibitors and visitors held by Gardenex and the HTA on the Gardenex stand in Hall 9.

The Gold Awards presented were:

The Greatest BBQ Sales Team - Whitehall Lacock

The Greatest Garden Decoration and Lighting Sales Team - Perrywood

The Greatest Inspiration for New Gardeners Team, Love The Plot You’ve Got Award – Barton Grange

The Greatest Garden Living Supplier – Norfolk Leisure (pictured below)

The Greatest Garden Living Retail Team, Scotland – Gouldings

The Greatest Garden Living Retail Team, London and the South East – Chessington

A list of all The Greatest Outdoor Living Retailing Award winners will be published in GTN’s October issue.

Temperatures soared in Cologne as garden retailers and buyers from around the globe converged on a highly successful spoga+gafa last weekend.

GTN Xtra was there to bring you these exclusive pictures from the outdoor living event including tours of the EFSA Concept Store, Elho, Edelman, all the British exhibitors in the Gardenex area of Hall 9 plus many many more.

We spent two days at spoga+gafa this year and even then didn't get time to see anything in Halls 1 to 4 and not even all of Halls 10.1 and 11 before we had to catch the train back (we got stuck on the Eurostar later that evening.)  Apologies to any exhibitors we missed, next year we will extend our stay to three days and capture the whole show.

Talking of next year GTN will be linking with the HTA to organise a trip to spoga+gafa with optional garden centre visits and present The Greatest Outdoor Living Retailing Awards for 2016. To register your interest for the trip in September 2016 please email: trevor.pfeiffer@tgcmc.co.uk

spoga+gafa 2016 takes place on 4th to 6th September, so it won't clash with the August Bank Holiday next year.
Cupar Garden Centre is put up for sale

Cupar Garden Centre in Fife, Scotland, has been put up for sale because the owner has been suffering from ill health and now wishes to retire. The sale is being handled by Quinton Edwards.

Currently the garden centre only opens from 10am to 4.30 and the restaurant is leased out. Quinton Edwards state that if trading hours were increased and the restaurant brought back in house, the garden centre would have capacity to significantly increase turnover and profitability.

The garden centre benefits from a newly installed modern biomass boiler system, which is OFGEM approved, and this will benefit from RHI payments over the next 20 years and bring considerable cost savings to the business.

There is also additional adjacent land available to purchase if required.

Interested parties should email sales@quintons.co.uk

New variety of Osteospermum called Little Writtle

Writtle College has bred a beautiful new variety of hardy Osteospermum and called it Little Writtle. The plant, with distinctive deep pink flowers, is now available to buy on major plant mail order website Suttons Seeds.

Writtle College has bred a beautiful new variety of hardy Osteospermum and called it Little Writtle.

The plant, with distinctive deep pink flowers, is now available to buy on major plant mail order website Suttons Seeds.

Horticulture students at Writtle College have bred and propagated the new plant in a five-year breeding trial. The parent plants, O. jucundum and O. Lady Leitrim, are self-sterile so they were grown close to each other so cross-pollination occurred and seeds were set. The result is a plant with a compact nature, which is less invasive than other varieties.

John Cullum (pictured), Lecturer in Horticulture at Writtle College, has led the breeding trial and named the new variety Little Writtle.

He said: “Breeding a new plant that is commercially viable is a great achievement for the College and for me personally. It is wonderful that it will raise the profile of the College and the area through its name Little Writtle. We have been selling the plant at Open Days and received excellent feedback as it has such a distinctive, deep pink, solid colour.

“Several garden centres and nurseries are not keen to stock hardy Osteospermums as they can grow into large clumps of plants, unsuitable for a small garden. A number of the older varieties also do not flower for very long and some gardeners dislike them for this reason. Little Writtle is a dwarf form, which means it is less invasive, and it produces an abundance of deep pink flowers throughout the season, so can bring colour to a garden from May to October.”

How hot is that chilli in the window (oof, oof)...?

Thompson & Morgan has given all its chilli pepper varieties a heat rating by means of an easy-to-read 'chilli meter' on 2016 seed packs...

The Scoville scale has been the standard measure of chili heat for over a hundred years, but a rating of 750,000 or 1million+ SHU doesn’t mean much to the average gardener, other than its likely to blow your socks off!

Looking to simplify things and give customers a better informed choice, Thompson & Morgan has rated all pepper varieties in its range on a simple 0-10 scale, from Cool & Sweet right up to Explosive!

The UK is fast becoming a nation of hot heads when it comes to greenhouse and windowsill growing. Driven by changing taste buds and a desire for more exotic cuisine, Thompson & Morgan has noticed a steady rise in the number of gardeners trying their hand at growing chilies and peppers in the last 10 years.

Easy to grow and providing a bountiful supply of fruits for fresh use, freezing and drying, they are becoming a common site in UK kitchens and greenhouses. Chilies are the perfect companion plants for growing alongside greenhouse tomatoes, thriving under the same conditions and feeding regime.

And for those without the luxury of a greenhouse there are many varieties that remain compact for indoor growing while still producing hundreds of fruits per plant, making them a very worthwhile addition to a sunny windowsill. Many varieties can also be grown outside in a sunny spot to great success.

T&M Horticultural Director Paul Hansord said: "For some growers it’s all about the kudos of growing the hottest varieties they can get their hands on – often far too hot to eat! But many gardeners are looking for a better culinary experience to suit their tastes – not many people really want to add the world’s hottest chilli varieties to their dishes. Our Pepper Meter allows customers to make a quick informed decision on the varieties to grow to suit their tastes, helping them get it right from the word go."

Display cards explaining the new Pepper Meter will hang alongside the Thompson & Morgan chili offering at garden centres in 2016, and vibrant redesigned packets will each clearly show the variety's heat rating for quick and easy selection.

New exhibitors look forward to an exciting AQUA 2015 show

AQUA 2015, the UK’s premier water gardening and aquatics trade event, will welcome a host of new exhibitors to October’s showpiece exhibition, which will be bigger than ever before...

AQUA 2015, the UK’s premier water gardening and aquatics trade event, will welcome a host of new exhibitors to October’s showpiece exhibition, which will be bigger than ever before.

A growing number of companies are choosing to exhibit for the first time as they see AQUA as the perfect opportunity to showcase their products to retailers and overseas distributors.

Show organiser Annie Foord said: "It's great to see so many newcomers booking stand space at this year's AQUA.

“I’m also happy to report that the UK’s major exhibitors are again heading for Telford, and many companies have increased their stand space this year.

“Another pleasing aspect is the fact we will be welcoming more overseas companies as well. They obviously regard AQUA as their major platform to showcase products to UK buyers.

“It’s a really exciting time for AQUA and I can promise visitors it will be the biggest ever AQUA show.”

With all the stand space being snapped up months before the event, a record number of 82 companies will be exhibiting their products and services at Telford International Centre on October 14-15.

The new exhibitors include: All Pond Solutions, Aquatlantis, Bimex BV, Hamac, Koral Sea, Lovibond, Multifox, Nauticalia, New Techno, Nordic Reef, Norwood Aquarium, Noux, PondXpert, Sharnbrook Shrimps, and Simply Aquaria.

Norwood Aquarium Ltd is a newcomer to AQUA, and general manager Rob Street said: “We have been supporting the bricks-and-mortar aquatic trade for 50 years, and we have recently made significant investments in our infrastructure. We believe AQUA 2015 is an ideal opportunity to demonstrate these changes and show retailers why we believe we can offer them the best service in the trade.”

Philip Nicholl, sales director of Hamac Trading Company, commented: “Several of our customers have recommended the AQUA show and we are excited about exhibiting this year.”

All Pond Solutions Ltd supply aquatic products to hundreds of stores across the UK and Ireland and they’re looking forward to their first AQUA show. “It promises to be a great event,” said All Pond Solutions general manager Charlie Kenton-O’Neill. “It’s the ideal stage to launch our new product ranges.”

Aidan Wallace, of Nauticalia, said: “We’re new to the show and we’re really looking forward to it.”

One of the most popular features at AQUA is the New Product Showcase, and this year it has been given greater prominence with a new and bigger home.

Nearly 100 new products were showcased in 2013 when AQUA was last staged, and a higher number is expected this year. All the items will be entered into the New Product Awards, which will be judged by team of independent retailers on the opening morning of the show.

In recognition of the growing importance of the New Product Showcase and Awards, there will 10 different categories compared to five in 2013.

The categories that now make up the Showcase and Awards are:

  • POS/Merchandising Idea
  • Reptile Product
  • Pond Construction/Decoration
  • Pond Pump
  • Pond Filter
  • Pond Food, Care and Accessories
  • Aquaria and Furniture
  • Aquarium Equipment
  • Aquarium Food, Care and Accessories
  • Aquarium Decoration

As well as getting to see all the new products to be launched on to the market, visitors will be well looked-after during their stay. There are more catering facilities and everyone will receive free tea and coffee, and a free deli bag lunch. Retailers and buyers will also be invited to join exhibitors at an AQUA dinner on the first evening of the exhibition. The dinner, which will also be free, has been moved to a larger room to accommodate nearly 700 people.

Visitors can also benefit from free parking next to the exhibition hall, and will be able to take full advantage of a new events village called Southwater Square, recently opened close to the centre with a new hotel, restaurants, and one of the UK’s largest town-centre parks.

A full list of exhibitors can be found on the AQUA 2015 website www.aquatelford.co.uk.

Wyevale showcases Amenity/Landscape stand at Four Oaks
Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford is this month taking its first Amenity/Landscape focused stand to the Four Oaks Trade Show...
Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford is this month taking its first Amenity/Landscape focused stand to the Four Oaks Trade Show.

The company will be showcasing its extensive range of plant material grown for the amenity market, landscape contractors, garden designers and trade nurseries at the show on September 8 and 9.

Adam Dunnett (pictured), Sales and Marketing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “We’re so excited to be having our first Amenity/Landscape focused stand at the Four Oaks Trade Show in Macclesfield.

“Last year saw a resurgence in the residential and the related construction market, the biggest since 2008, demanding a top quality finished product supplied to very tight deadlines.

“Shorter lead times and the move from winter planting to all year round often means that where a field grown product was required the same product must now be sought in container. One of our strengths is that we can offer an equivalent all year round supply of product.

“At the trade show special focus will be given to our container tree product as a point of difference. This range is particularly useful as a lead in for field grown stock, covering the gap in supply, expanding the planting season.

“Pleached trees and true multi stems will be exhibited along with pre-formed hedging in troughs for instant impact planting solutions. Visitors to the show will be able to see for themselves samples from our ‘Select’ tree range – varieties we have developed to produce strong much improved forms of their predecessors.”

Product development and innovation is always a top priority at Wyevale Nurseries and customers can be assured of an ever evolving range in both variety type and presentation form.

Adam added: “We are the only one of the larger UK nurseries that actually grows the whole range of nursery stock – basic field-grown seedlings and transplants through to standard trees, both field and containerised, the whole range of container ornamentals, topped off with specimens. We pay attention to the detail – seed provenance selection, new varieties, production methods and all grown to the National Plant Specification Standards.

“Thus we are in the best position to supply the trade, having something of everything here actually growing on-site, ready for spontaneous demand. Heading each of the production divisions is a Director with more than 25 years’ experience of growing at Wyevale. We are a wholesale nursery, with a sales team and nationwide transport to match. We are up for one-off supply or a regular delivery schedule.”

Wyevale Nurseries is one of the largest family-run wholesale nurseries in the UK. It was established in 1930 by Harry Williamson, a horticulturist and entrepreneur. It became the company it is today under the leadership of his son, Peter, who sadly passed away in 2011.

The Williamsons’ saw the opportunity to sell their product to an undeveloped retail market, creating one of the first garden centres, followed by a chain. In 1987, the retail side needed to expand and the 19 garden centres were sold as a PLC.

The family then turned its focus to Wyevale Nurseries Ltd. It continues to be a family-run business with ownership and joint chairmanship currently being held by the third generation, Heather and Simeon Williamson, with plans for the fourth generation to takeover in the future.

Wyevale Nurseries has a significant product range and is regularly introducing new plants. It offers a large variety of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants to garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners.

Celebrate Conifers with National Conifer Week
Such is its popularity across the nation, the conifer has been attributed its own week as well as being the Horticultural Trades Association’s Plant of the Month for October...
Low maintenance, attractive forms and all year round colour are just a few of the benefits that the conifer can bring to the garden.

Such is its popularity across the nation, the conifer has been attributed its own week as well as being the Horticultural Trades Association’s (HTA) Plant of the Month for October.

National Conifer Week, organised by the British Conifer Group, takes place on Saturday 26 September running until Saturday 3 October. Retailers are encouraged to inspire their customers upon the many benefits of growing conifers in the garden.

If not already a feature of a garden, a conifer can regularly be found to be one’s neighbour. Whether planted in a container on a balcony, in a domestic garden or featured in acres of grounds, conifers can work as a backdrop, standalone, or in a border with other plants. They are extremely versatile, coming in an amazingly diverse range of shades, textures, shapes and sizes.

Rower and Olympic Gold medallist 2012 (Team GB) Alex Gregory (left) says: “Conifers have always been a part of my life. From the early days of climbing in their branches, to the family pilgrimage we took to the Californian giant redwoods.

"There's something fascinating about the variety of sizes, colours and shapes conifers provide. They really are a feast for the senses. Every garden should have at least one conifer”.

Recommended RHS AGM varieties include:
  • Picea abies 'Acrocona'
  • Larix decidua 'Puli'
  • Thuja plicata 'Atrovirens'
  • Taxus baccata 'Icicle'
Those looking for companion plants to complement conifers in the garden are recommended to try:
  • Acer ‘Osakazuki’
  • Colchicum speciosum
  • Erica ‘Springwood White’
Nominated and agreed upon by British growers and retailers, the HTA’s Plant of the Month campaign highlights the plants that are widely available and looking especially good each month.

Bounty Hunters hit Wakehurst for a ‘Botanical’ adventure
Wakehurst Place, home to the largest seed bank in the world, have announced the line-up of their exciting NEW ‘Bountiful Botanics’ Festival in September...
Wakehurst Place, home to the largest seed bank in the world, have announced the line-up of their exciting NEW ‘Bountiful Botanics’ Festival in September!

Plant hunter Tom Hart Dyke, Garden Doctor Steve Bradley and John Guest – otherwise known as ‘The English Apple Man’ are amongst a panel of eclectic and world-renowned guest speakers who will be headlining at this fun-filled family extravaganza, celebrating nature’s bounty and the turn of the season, that’s taking place over the weekend of 26th and 27th September 2015.

Thomas Hart Dyke is an English horticulturist and plant hunter, who, following in the tradition of Edwardian British plant hunters (many of whom helped establish Wakehurst) risked life and limb to acquire a rare species of plant. (In his case he was kidnapped whilst hunting for rare orchids). Steve Bradley, who starred in the TV series ‘Garden Doctors’ is a well known author and resident horticulturist for local radio in Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Essex and a mine of information! John Guest, ‘The English Apple Man’ – will talk about ‘British apples’ and, appropriately for Kew at Wakehurst’s semi-centennial year, how they have changed in the last fifty years.

In addition to a full complement of talks taking place in the Elizabethan Mansion, visitors are invited to exclusive behind-the-scenes walks and tours around the Estate and Millennium Seed Bank. This is a real ‘get to know, get to grow’ Wakehurst event and guests are invited to participate in Autumn wild food demonstrations (taking place in the marquees on the croquet lawn) and, with experts on hand from Wakehurst to give gardening tips and growing advice, can learn how to take cuttings, plant bulbs, plan their vegetable beds, make compost, prepare seeds, forage for wild food and much, much more!

There will be plenty of activities to keep young explorers and children of all ages occupied, including tree climbing, pond dipping, bug hunts, storytelling, vegetable art and foraging tours – and a display of vintage Wakehurst machinery including working tractors. In addition to there will also be seasonal displays from local horticultural societies, specialist nurseries offering advice and skilled artisans displaying fencing, gate and iron work, as well as plants and delicious food for sale – and a few inevitable Autumn pumpkins!  The whole event, will be rounded off with an hour long Gardeners Question & Answer session and the panel will include gardening journalists, guest speakers and Kew and Wakehurst representatives.

Talks and tours cost £5 each and children go FREE.

Richard Carr joined Fiskars this week as commercial director of the UK business.

He joined on 1 September 1st after a brief spell at William Sinclair following several years at Hozelock and prior to that, Spear & Jackson. He reports to the company's regional director for south west Europe, John Grayson.

"We've been industry colleagues for a number of years in differing categories and more recently within the garden and DIY market during Richard's tenure at Hozelock," says Grayson.

"I had an opening in my management team and Richard's knowledge of Fiskars and our recent UK progression presented me with a tremendous opportunity. Combining his experience and reputation in the market with our continued development plans for the UK provides a solution with obvious mutual benefits."

"During the selection process he was the standout candidate, impressing everyone involved, and I'm delighted with the conclusion," says Grayson.

Carr said: " It's a great opportunity for me to further develop my career with a global brand leader and within an industry I know so well."

Gardman products are this week’s top performers...and as the days get shorter, its all about lighting once again.

Star performers:

  • Gardman’s Traditional Candle Lantern makes a dramatic entry at No.1.
  • Gardman’s Solar Black Nickel Glass Marker Light is the highest climber, up 26 places to No 11 - just beating the 25-places uplift by Woodlodge’s 4in Spang Pot.
  • Highest new entry this week: Gardman’s Ice Cube Solar Lights.
  • The continuing popularity of orchids is clear to see. That perennial chart topper, the Fito Orchid drip feeder, is still hanging around at No 3, while Growth Technology’s Orchid Myst has another sales surge to climb 24 places to No 10.

Greens make healthy gains at the top
Winter green are creating plenty of activity in the upper reaches of the chart this week, with Sweetheart cabbage plants from Quantil gaining the top spot, while spring cabbage, kale and Chinese broccoli all show good gains in the Top 12...

Winter green are creating plenty of activity in the upper reaches of the chart this week, with Sweetheart cabbage plants from Quantil gaining the top spot, while spring cabbage, kale and Chinese broccoli all show good gains in the Top 12.

  • It’s been another good week for Thompson & Morgan, who have eight re-entries in the Top 50 - and their Turnip Snowball seeds is the highest new entry.
  • Tender veg seeds still make several appearances in the chart, despite the fact that it’s the wrong time of the year for sowing. Chillis, tomatoes and cucamelons (that interesting but not especially delicious novelty endorsed by James Wong in the Suttons range) all figure. So, do gardeners already have one eye on next season - or are these just impulse purchases?

  • Westland’s Multi-Purpose Compost 75L was the highest climber, gaining 20 places to No 9. Scotts Levington John Innes No 2 25L was its closest rival climber, up 19 places to No 22 with sales increases of more than 50% on the week.
  • Highest re-entry is Westland Gro-Sure Peat-Free All Purpose Compost with 4-month feed 50L, back in at No 17.

AIPH approves horticultural world exhibition in Almere, The Netherlands
The International Association of Horticultural Producers has finalised agreements with the city of Almere and the ‘Nederlandse Tuinbouwraad’ for the A1 horticultural world exhibition Floriade Amsterdam Almere 2022...
The International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) has finalised agreements with the city of Almere and the ‘Nederlandse Tuinbouwraad’ (NTR) for Floriade Amsterdam Almere 2022.

The A1 horticultural world exhibition is to take place in Almere, Amsterdam in 2022. With the theme ‘Growing Green Cities’ the expo will cover over 60 hectares and focus on the future role of horticulture in city construction.

Three final agreements were signed on 1 September following the agreement by the City Council of Almere last July regarding the plans for organising the Floriade.

In order to organise a world horticultural exhibition approval is needed from AIPH which checks if the exhibition meets the requirements for A1 international horticultural exhibitions. In the agreement with the city of Almere AIPH gives its approval to the Floriade Amsterdam Almere 2022 as a A1 horticultural world exhibition. Bernard Oosterom, vice president of AIPH says, “This is a great way to show the world what green is and what the horticulture sector is able to do. The Netherlands has a great heritage of Floriade Expos and I am confident that Almere will do a great job in continuing this tradition”.

On the evening of the signing Vice-Mayor of Almere, Henk Mulder, said: “A lot has to be done, we are fully aware of that. But with the agreement of the City Council last July and the three agreements tonight, we can go full speed ahead."

Two further agreements were signed with the NTR, relating to the use of the word mark and logo as well as detailing plans for the coming seven years before Floriade Amsterdam Almere 2022 takes place. Nico Koomen President of the NTR, added, “This agreement is the written embedding of the intention to make Floriade Amsterdam Almere 2022 a big success.”

With the approval of AIPH the government can make the formal request at the BIE (Bureau International des Expositions) in Paris. An important step on the way to Floriade Amsterdam Almere 2022.

Container Centralen to offer mobile exchange depot at South West Growers Show
The organisers of one of the UK’s top commercial horticultural exhibitions have announced that Container Centralen will be running the mobile trolley exchange service at this year’s South West Growers Show, which takes place on Wednesday 7th October at The Matford Centre in Exeter, Devon...

The organisers of one of the UK’s top commercial horticultural exhibitions have announced that Container Centralen will be running the mobile trolley exchange service at this year’s South West Growers Show, which takes place on Wednesday 7th October at The Matford Centre in Exeter, Devon.

“The management team running the SWGS have always tried to give their exhibitors and you, our visitors, something extra when attending our show at Exeter” explained David Jackson, Chairman of the Show committee: “Container Centralen ran a similar exchange at the show in 2013 which was really well received so we were thrilled when they agreed to run a similar service at this year’s show”.

For growers in the West Country exchanging damaged trolley bases and shelves can be quite a challenge but the mobile exchange service brings the Container Centralen depot to you, the customer, at the Show. All you need to do is bring along your damaged bases and shelves – shelves are determined as being both side struts – and Container Centralen will exchange them for fully serviceable replacements. CC are also offering customers the opportunity to bring along any good quality black tagged or blank trollies to be introduced back in to the system with a red tag for a special price of just £8.35 per trolley. The offer will be available at the show and for limited time afterwards to ensure that all visitors have the opportunity to make use of this great deal.

Prior booking for this service is essential and CC will be sending an invitation to all customers over the coming weeks. Although this service is currently only available to existing customers representatives from CC will be on hand at the show to discuss your businesses logistical needs and advise you on the services they can offer.

The show, now in its 42nd year, is aimed at growers and plant buyers – ranging from garden centres and retail outlets to local authorities and the landscaping industry - the show brings together key growers and suppliers of specialist horticultural equipment and services and is a great place to see and source all the latest plant introductions and products.

With more than 60 exhibitors already booked, the organisers are encouraging people to contact them as soon as possible to reserve their space.

Costs are as follows:

  • £52.50m2 for space only
  • £73.50 m2 for shell scheme

David concluded: “The South West Growers Show has established itself as the foremost event in the South West for the commercial horticultural industry. For the visitor, it provides the ideal venue to meet key growers and horticultural suppliers as well as sourcing the latest plant introductions and products; for the exhibitor it offers a unique business-to- business environment which results in more than 90 per cent of attendees purchasing or placing orders.”

Admission to this trade only event is free. For further information please visit www.swgs.co.uk or call 01404 821982.

Monkton Elm's new restaurant supports Somerset suppliers

Diners at the Elm Tree Restaurant at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre in Somerset will be helping to support suppliers from the county...

Diners at the Elm Tree Restaurant at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre in Somerset will be helping to support suppliers from the county.

The restaurant, which opened in April, stocks items provided by nearby farmers and independent businesses and offers customers details of the provenance of the food being served.

Denis Guillemin, Restaurant Operations Manager at the award-winning, family run garden centre at Monkton Heathfield near Taunton, said: “Our new restaurant was built with the help of businesses from the Somerset area so we have decided to stick to the theme of keeping it in the county with our stock too.

“We are very open with our customers about where the food they are eating has come from. Pyne’s of Somerset in North Petherton is our main supplier of meat for the restaurant and has been with us for many years. The beef supplied to them comes from Fordgate near Bridgwater and includes Ruby Red Devon cattle and other traditional English breeds that provide the tastiest meat," added Denis (pictured).

“We also sell sparkling and draught cider from Orchard Pig Ciders, which is based just outside of Glastonbury, our bread is supplied by Wellington-based artisan bread maker, Ready Bready Dough and our extensive range of coffees are made using supplies from Clifton Coffee.”

Pyne’s of Somerset was established in 1984. It handpicks its animals from a nearby farm during varying stages of the fattening process.

The farm uses a unique blend of cattle cake made especially for the animals it is rearing specifically for the butchers.

Orchard Pig Cider was set up in 2004 by Andrew Quinlan and Neil Macdonald. Its ciders and drinks are made from apples scrumped from Somerset orchards.

Ready Bready Dough was set up in 2007 and bakes a range of breads from speciality bread to spelt and gluten free to a traditional tin loaf.

Founded in 2001, Clifton Coffee roasts a range of seasonal espresso blends as well as rotating single origin coffees across the UK.

Denis added: “Anyone who visits the restaurant and would like to find out more can ask our staff members for more information. We will also be installing a provenance map in the restaurant so people can see the exact places our food comes from.”
