With two full weekends to go until the big day it’s crunch time for serious seasonal promotion. Stars for Europe, the pan-European poinsettia campaign have been busy with a range of projects all aimed at helping you sell more. But this time they just want you to sit back and let yourself be inspired by their range of videos.

The Stars for Europe YouTube channel, MyPoinsettia, is updated with films for consumers and trade, featuring all things from serious floristry to DIY décor ideas for the home and in-store presentation tips.

The selection dedicated to garden centres features a film full of tips to promote sales with poinsettia presentation; clever display ideas to share with staff to really boost those impulse buys.

Plus there’s a care guide to share with your team so you can sleep soundly knowing your precious poinsettias are in good hands.

Check out the production films to see the back-story behind how hundreds of thousands of the popular Christmas classic are grown... it’s far more complicated than you’d expect and it’s sharing this knowledge with customers that will make you stand out from the crowd and the supermarkets.

Each year there’s also a brand new range of consumer-focussed films sharing creative ideas for making homes magical with your key seasonal product... From techniques for making poinsettia bracts chopped from the plant last as a cut flower to design inspiration for the dinner table and fun crafts for kids.

Have them playing on a screen by your poinsettia display or use your social media channels to share them with your customers so they’re inspired to come in-store and have a go themselves. You could even have staff doing live demonstrations.

Feeling creative? Have a go!

With the bad weather approaching fast many Garden Centres will be assessing their requirements for Rock Salt.

Salt in general provides huge potential for winter sales, in what can be a quieter time for many centres.  However retailers must be vigilant in ensuring that the product that is sold contains no less than 90% salt in order to comply with British Standards BS3247.  Ensure that you are purchasing your salt from a reputable supplier who not only certifies that the product conforms to British Standards, but is someone you can trust for continuity of supply and product quality.

Meadow View Stone supply Garden Centres with either pure White Marine or pure traditional Pink Road Salt, both of which have not been diluted by blending in any grit or sand, meaning they are over and above the British Standards compliance amount.  Furthermore as our salt is pure it provides a much cleaner solution in clearing ice and snow as it leaves no residue, when compared to cheaper alternatives such as winter grit which tend to leave a trail of slushy sand.

Our salt is supplied in strong durable white bags with a colourful design, that is unique in its manufacture by having an inner black layer which serves to prolong the shelf life of this product by up to two years in comparison to standard bags.

We look forward to supplying you with any of your future rock salt requirements of either pre-packed, loose or bulk bagged and we are currently offering exception deals on Rock Salt, please call us for information on Tel: 01948 841607 or email info@meadowviewstone.co.uk

West Midlands garden centre site sold for £2.5m

The site of former Woolmans Garden Centre in Shirley, Solihull, has been sold at auction for £2.5 million. It had been marketed as a prime residential development opportunity (subject to planning)...

The site of former Woolmans Garden Centre in Shirley, Solihull, has been sold at auction for £2.5 million. It had been marketed as a prime residential development opportunity (subject to planning).

The property, which had a guide price of £2 million, went under the hammer at the auction in the Holt Suite at Aston Villa FC on Thursday.

The garden centre closed when the owner Mark Tredwell retired earlier this year. The business had its roots in the flower shop his grandmother started in Sparkbrook in 1900. Her own father had sold chrysanthemum plants from his back garden in 1881.

A second shop was opened on Sparkhill where seeds, plants and garden sundries were also on offer.

Mark’s father took over the business from his mother and in 1952 he bought a nursery on Solihull Road, which supplied plants and cut flowers to the shops.

When Mark joined the business in the 1960s, the flower shops were sold and the nursery was turned into a garden centre.

The Woolmans business still exists, selling chrysanthemums, dahlias and plants online.

The HTA in association with Garden Trade News are arranging an inspirational Study Tour to the Netherlands in February 2016 that will include the 6,000 sq metre concept garden centre at The Tuinzaken Garden Retail Experience in Boskoop, and there is still some very limited availability for this opportunity.

As well as visiting some creative garden centres and a tour of Edelman, the Study Tour will also take in the Garden Retail Experience in Boskoop for its 5th Edition, including the event’s gala dinner.

Event Background: Retail reality is forever changed. Consumers are empowering, well informed and hypermobile due to their smartphones and tablets. They are looking for entertainment, hospitality and experience, shopping 24/7 and expects the widest range at the best price.

How do you translate these developments to the shop floor and how can you actually sell more? How do you deal with the new consumer? And how can your business remain profitable in the garden industry in the near and far future? The GARDEN RETAIL EXPERIENCE  offers inspiration and answers and helps in the transition to a new shopping model.

As well as exclusive access to the Retail Experience our tour party will also attend the Retail Gala on Wednesday 17 February. The full tour itinerary is as follows:

  • Wednesday 17th  Feb 2016 – Fly out in the morning to Amsterdam – from airport begin tour of creative Garden Centers in the Netherlands throughout the day. Speculatively one in Osdorp and a second De Bosrand in Wassenaar. In the evening attend the exclusive Retail Experience Gala in Boskoop including speakers and entertainment.
  • Thursday 18th Feb – Attend Retail Experience with full experts guided tour. www.gardenretailexperience.com

In the evening attend a locally based meal for additional networking opportunities.

  • Friday 19th Feb -  Visit to Intratuin garden Centre followed by a Tour to Edelman, lunch and in the afternoon fly home to the UK.

The cost for the entire trip is £380 per person, this covers accommodation and travel once in the Netherlands as well as lunch and Dinner on Wednesday and Thursday evening but the HTA and GTN request those attending the tour to make their own way to Amsterdam Schiphol airport as travelling from all over the UK and attendees can then organize as best suited to their location.

The tours intended start time is 11am from Schiphol airport and once in the Netherlands Martin Simmons of the HTA will host alongside Trevor Pfeiffer from Garden Trade News, Garden Retail Experience team members and Edelman and as such have been able to keep any related costs for this to a minimum.

If you would like to book on to the event or need any more information please don’t hesitate to contact the HTA – events@the-hta.org.uk

See the gallery below for images from GTN's visit to the Garden Retail Experience 2015.  You'll see from the images that if you want great inspiration to improve and develop your retailing for the next few years this really is a visit not to be missed.

Nicholas Marshall, the retail executive responsible for turning around the Garden Centre Group, is said by the Financial Times to be preparing a bid to buy the Homebase DIY and garden centre business from Home Retail Group PLC...

Marshall told the FT he has been looking at Homebase for the past couple of years and was holding talks with private equity companies, though no approach has yet been made to Home Retail, which also owns the Argos retail chain.

People close to the situation said Marshall would likely seek to transform Homebase from a DIY centre into a more family-friendly retailer, with more extensive garden and pet products.
Blustery weather fails to blow November sales off course

Wet and windy weather took the edge off sales volumes for the last week in November, according to GTN Bestsellers EPoS data, but aggregates for the month are still the best in three years and Christmas Products sales are still on course for a record year.

The GTN Bestsellers Christmas Top 50 index for November is up 7.5% on last year and 2% up on the previous record year of 2013.

Also showing year on year positive movement is the Growing Media Top 50 index, up by 10.5% on 2014 levels.

Only the Garden Products Top 50 index is down year on year, by 20%, which is driven mainly by lower solar lighting sales volumes.

It’s all down to the next two weeks of Christmas activity now. We look forward to seeing many of you as we continue our visits for The Greatest Christmas Awards.

GTN Bestsellers Top 50 sales volumes compared to the same week last year...
  • Garden Products - down 9%
  • Christmas Products - up 47%

LeisureGrow Group enhances sales force with new appointments

In response to a growing customer base and increased brands within the group, LeisureGrow Group has increased its sales team, with five new industry specialists joining the LeisureGrow family.

New to the team are three new Area Sales Managers who will be working across the LG Outdoor, Grillstream barbeques, NOMA seasonal decorations and Erin horticulture brands:  Jacqui Sutcliffe in the Midlands, Lisa Brierley in the North West, and Catriona Exeter in Scotland.

Jacqui Sutcliffe will be familiar to many customers having been in the industry for 15 years, and specifically working within Christmas for the past five years.  Lisa Brierley joins from a market leading company with 7 years’ proven track record within the core gardening sector of the industry.  Catriona is widely known to many garden centres in Scotland with over ten years’ experience in the gift industry.

Joining to look after NOMA seasonal decorations are two new National Accounts Managers:  Colin Armitage (below), who has been working with retailers in the gift industry for more than 30 years; and Lee Kennerley (left), who brings his 20 years’ experience of home, gift and seasonal decorations to the NOMA brand.

Meanwhile Mark Nickerson, who has been with LeisureGrow for 7 years’ has been made National Sales Manager; and Stuart Warren returns to East Anglia from the North-West, servicing customers he previously looked after for many years.

Jody Grimmer, Managing Director of LeisureGrow said:  “We want to ensure all our customers get the great service and reliability they expect from LeisureGrow, which is why we’ve picked the people who we believe are the best in the business to be a part of our sales team.  As products and technologies across all our brands – NOMA, LG Outdoor, Grillstream and Erin – become more and more sophisticated we are ensuring our personnel matches this in expertise, product knowledge, and customer service that’s second to none.

GCA garden centres sparkle with Christmas displays
The regional winners of the Garden Centre Association’s annual Christmas display competition have been revealed. Fifteen garden centres have been named as having the best overall Christmas displays in their individual regions.

Squires Badshot Lea were winners in the South Thames region.

The regional winners of the Garden Centre Association’s (GCA) annual Christmas display competition have been revealed.

Fifteen garden centres have been named as having the best overall Christmas displays in their individual regions.

Iain Wylie, GCA Chief Executive said: “I am delighted to announce the area winners of our Christmas competition. The centres are now being judged to determine the national winners. Congratulations to all the winners so far and thank you to our band of judges who volunteered to visit them. I’d like to wish all the area winners good luck in the next round!”

The two overall national winners will be announced later this month and presented with their awards at the GCA’s annual conference in January, 2016.

The results are as follows for the Destination Garden Centre (DGC) and Garden Centre (GC) categories: Barton Grange (DGC) in Lancashire and Burleydam Garden Centre (GC) in Cheshire came top in the North West. Squires Badshot Lea, pictured above, (DGC) in Surrey and Millbrook - Gravesend (GC) in Kent were the winners in the South Thames region.

Also going through in the North West region is Bents (DGC) in Cheshire and from South Thames, Castle Gardens (GC) in Dorset. They both go through to the national finals as they were last year’s overall winners, giving an additional finalist from their respective areas.

Meanwhile in the Wales and West area, Whitehall Garden Centre (DGC) at Lacock in Wiltshire and Brimsmore Gardens (GC) in Somerset are in pole position with Van Hage Great Amwell (DGC) in Hertfordshire and Frosts – Brampton in Cambridgeshire coming out top in the North Thames region.

In the North East, Langlands Shiptonthorpe (DGC) in Yorkshire and Langlands (GC) Leeds, West Yorkshire came first and in the Midlands the winners were St Peters (DGC) and Pennells – Lincoln (GC), Lincolnshire.

In Scotland and Northern Ireland, the overall winner was Glendoick Garden Centre (GC) in Perth.

Iain added: “The national judging begins now (November 23, 2015) and, this year, Andy Campbell will be visiting all the centres over a two week period. Good luck to everyone in the national competition. There has been some excellent feedback about the wonderful Christmas displays across the country from the area judges so it’s going to be an interesting competition this year.

“We will be announcing the overall, national winners later this month and they will then receive their prizes at the GCA annual conference, which takes place at The Grand Hotel in Brighton from January 24 until 27, 2016.”

Are You Still Loving Your Plot?
Ten months on from the first “Love the Plot You’ve Got” Masterclasses for garden centre teams, seven new Masterclass dates have been announced for Spring 2016...

Ten months on from the first “Love the Plot You’ve Got” Masterclasses for garden centre teams – what’s been happening in garden centres?

Over 100 staff from 36 businesses attended the Award Winning GIMB/HTA Masterclasses in the early spring. The aim was to try new things to attract and inspire anyone to add some zest and zing to their plot – no matter how small – no matter if only a window box.

Those who attended reported extra sales of patio sets – especially tea for two, plants, pots and planted containers.

What they said:

Sarah, Lynne, Sue & Karen from Gordale Nurseries attended the LTP Masterclass held at Sinclair and go on to say:

“Here are a couple of photos of some of the displays that have we built since the Masterclass. The owner of a local pub in Neston has used the planted wheelbarrow as inspiration for his own display outside the pub.

"We also did a large display in the foyer of the garden centre for the Weber BBQ event that we held in May. We believe that increased sales in tickets and sales on the evening were generated by the display. Weber have reported to us that our event was the largest attended so far this year.

"The 4 staff that attended the course were thoroughly inspired and will continue to use the new knowledge gained in the future.”

From the Plant Area At Fosseway Garden Centre, Jayne Homer explains:

“Here at Fosseway garden centre we have really embraced this project. A space has been allocated with two plots of identical size. We had a large back drop printed of two houses. One is a traditional Cotswold stow and the other is red brick with PVC windows. To date we have changed the gardens twice. The cottage garden style encouraged sales of roses and the veg garden sold directly twice the amount of veg thugs and veg. The gardens create much interest and is a focal point in our plant area. We often use it as an opportunity to talk with our customers and have so far had positive feed back.”

You’ll see from the photos that there are great visual ideas to inspire customers. Remember that “Love The Plot You’ve Got” is a three year campaign so the more people get behind it – the more it will build each year.

Building on the success of 2015, here is a Masterclass in your region covering how to develop successful ideas for 2016:

  • What we learned from Year One
  • How to do even better in Year Two
  • Principles of visual merchandising and driving sales
  • Practice building displays to sell more plants and garden goods in 2016 – prize for the best on the day
  • National Competition for the best display – winner announced at the GTN Greatest Awards at the HTA Futures Conference 2016

Target audience – anyone wanting to improve their display skills indoors or out – and whether you attended the Year One Masterclass or not.

HTA helps to support horticulture in Scotland
HTA has been working the heart of Scottish Government this week at Holyrood, promoting the benefits of horticulture...
HTA has been working the heart of Scottish Government this week at Holyrood, promoting the benefits of horticulture.

Neil Cummings, Regional Business Manager for the HTA in Scotland, together with a team of HTA members has been exhibiting in the Garden Lobby area situated between the Debating Chamber and the MSP offices.

Neil said: “Following a first very successful Holyrood Reception back in May we were invited to put on an exhibition right in the centre of Parliament. This has given us a fantastic opportunity to engage with many MSPs and Government ministers. We have been highlighting the positive impact of horticulture in Scotland such as the benefits to, the economy, health and well-being, environment and tourism.

“It has also given us the opportunity to discuss how important it is to get horticulture into the curriculum for excellence so that our children have a better understanding of where their food comes from, how it is grown and the environment around them.  Hopefully this will lead to a greater number of horticultural students at colleges and universities and an increase in the uptake of modern apprenticeships with horticultural businesses.”

Neil had assistance from HTA past President Stan Green from Growforth Nurseries, HTA Council Representative for Scotland, Simon Fraser from Ben Reid Garden Centre, Dougal Philip from New Hopetoun Gardens and Carolyn Spray from Pentland Plants.  There was much engagement with many MSPs during the week, on the benefits of horticulture in combatting social isolation, horticulture in education and the Love the Plot You’ve Got campaign.

If you would like to add your voice to the discussions go to @LoveYourPlot or the #LoveYourPlot as MSPs are telling us why they love their gardens or gardening. Add a picture of your garden and tell us what it means to you.

Gardman supports Healthy Profits Roadshow
Gardman is among a raft of leading industry suppliers supporting a series of one-day training events organised by former Garden Centre Association inspector Liz Hutson...
Gardman is among a raft of leading industry suppliers supporting a series of one-day training events organised by former Garden Centre Association inspector Liz Hutson.

The ‘Grow Your Own Profits’ roadshow sessions, running over February and March next year, are designed to help garden centres maximize sales of bulbs, seeds, plants, garden sundries, irrigation and bird care. A key aim is to increase footfall and average spend, particularly in core gardening, via as many channels as possible.

Topics will include:

  • Why sales of core garden products and many plants fail to reach their full potential, despite customer demand
  • How to target customers of all ages and abilities, using internal and external means
  • Training for appropriate plant and product groups with quick and easy references to rapidly increase staff knowledge and enthusiasm
  • Thinking outside the box
  • Making the most of all resources and opportunities
  • Implementing a sustainable and realistic strategy

The courses are intended for planteria and sundries staff, owners, managers and marketing employees. Delegates will take away a comprehensive set of training materials.

Liz Hutson says core garden products remain something of a mystery to many customers. “While many other departments may be peaking in terms of potential, there is still a long way to go in order to make the most of the sales opportunities in core gardening in most centres”

She adds: “Improving product knowledge and increasing staff motivation and confidence will have a marked impact on the bottom line and if this is combined with better internal and external communication with the consumer, it can only enhance sales further and help centres make the most of every square metre of selling space.”

Gardman’s Director of Business Development, Lolly Lee, said: “As leading suppliers of core gardening and bird care products, Gardman had no hesitation in offering its support for Liz’s initiative. Good product knowledge helps staff to engage with customers and improve the retail experience, and we believe garden centres will find this a great way to up their game.”

Dates and venues:

  • Maidstone – 16 February (Marriott Tudor Park)
  • Guildford – 18 February (Barnett Hill Hotel & Conference Centre)
  • Cambridge – 23 February (Menzies Hotel)
  • Birmingham – 25 February (Holiday Inn)
  • Chester – 29 February (Carden Park Hotel)
  • Perth – 2 March (Murrayshall House Hotel)

Prices start at £70 plus VAT per delegate (depending on numbers) for early bird booking. Lunch, refreshments and all course materials are included.

Garden centres may book via a special HTA mailing, direct through Liz Hutson (01531 631592, liz.hutson@ledburybband.co.uk) or online at www.bookwhen.com/growprofits

New campaign co-ordinator for Love the Plot You’ve Got
The Garden Industry Marketing Board (GIMB) has contracted Holly Garland and the team at garlandpr to co-ordinate the industry wide Love the Plot You’ve Got campaign...
The Garden Industry Marketing Board (GIMB) has contracted Holly Garland and the team at garlandpr to co-ordinate the industry wide Love the Plot You’ve Got campaign.

As Director and founder of garlandpr Holly brings with her a successful track record of achieving great results for a wide variety of clients in a range of different sectors from PR to consumer awareness and engagement campaigns. This includes working for central Government in the press offices of the Department of Health and Ministry of Defence, as well as managing the media in 10 Downing Street during the tenure of Gordon Brown and Tony Blair. She has also handled PR and communications for high profile events such as London 2012 and Glasgow 2014 along with a number of other in house roles.

Chair of the GIMB, Keith Nicholson from Westland Horticulture, “We are delighted that Holly and her team is working with us to help take the campaign forward in 2016 and beyond. They bring with them a lot of experience and enthusiasm from the various clients and roles that they have had.”

He adds, “2015 has seen a successful programme of Love the Plot roadshows throughout the country enabling us to take the message to a wide audience, supported by additional activity online and in the media. The campaign is supported by retailers, growers and suppliers but there is room for more – as its success is governed by the funds it is able to raise. It is about growing the market as a whole – which is in the interests of all businesses no matter their size.”

Commenting on the award of the contract Holly Garland said, “This is a fantastic campaign with masses of potential.  The support that the industry has given to the campaign to date is inspirational and we are really looking forward to working with everyone to take it to the next level.

“Key for us will be taking the campaign forward to achieve even more cut-through in a noisy, competitive consumer market.  To that end, we have a variety of exciting activities in mind and look forward to bringing them to fruition with the GIMB team.”

Love the Plot You’ve Got is designed to help and inspire 30-45 year olds who have access to a garden or outdoor space but don’t currently make great use of it. Industry research has revealed that skills and knowledge once handed from one generation to another are being lost, and that while lots of people want to improve their outdoor spaces and environment, a lack of knowledge and confidence is holding them back.

Real Christmas tress rush set to commence this weekend
Wyevale Garden Centres is predicting this weekend to be the one of the biggest sales weekend for Christmas trees with tens of thousands to be sold over real tree weekend...

Wyevale Garden Centres is predicting this weekend to be the one of the biggest sales weekend for Christmas trees with tens of thousands to be sold over real tree weekend.

Buoyed consumer confidence with the demand for quality Christmas trees has prompted an expected sales increase of 11% of quality Real Christmas trees from the British Isles, with enough stock to fill the Barcelona Nou Camp Football Stadium.

The increase in sales supports a recent OnePoll study where over 52% of customers assess the quality and shape of a tree before selecting their Christmas tree – this is compared to other indicators such as price and height.  The OnePoll survey also reveals that 20% of Brits will make their Christmas tree the backdrop of their social media posts this year.

Despite fears from British tree growers that cheaper alternatives are flooding the UK market, the estimated growth also shows key trends as consumers use Christmas tree buying as an honoured tradition.

A strong trend emerging is the demand for larger sized trees reflected in increased sales of their largest sized trees of 240cm and above (sales up 55%) and in select centres sales of their very largest XXXL sizes (over 3m). Trees up to 4m are of limited availability and take pride of place within the Christmas tree section and are already 30% sold through. Other popular trees include the larger Swedish style, Nordmann Firs, which were a big hit last year, especially across centres where value for money is a high priority, as customers can get a bigger tree for less and in a different style.

Another intriguing trend has been the demand in certain regions to bring back the Norway Spruce Christmas tree, a tree that triggers a strong sense of childhood nostalgia which seems to be a strong driver for selecting a traditional Christmas tree.

“The picking of the family Christmas tree is a long tradition that the nation gears up to, marking the official start of the festive season at home, but we do advise customers to pick their tree as early as possible to ensure they get the best looking tree. The scent, style and size of the Christmas tree are all key factors we see our shoppers seeking advice on, with many asking for the biggest one we have in stock!” says Dan Zinner, trading director at Wyevale Garden Centres.

David Mitchell, Christmas tree expert at Wyevale Garden Centres adds, “It is worth going the extra mile to ensure quality standards – it is important to oversee the whole life cycle of a tree, which gets pruned 20 times in the course of its life, so we class them as artisan products as there is real craftsmanship in how they are pruned. There should be no reason that any of our trees lose their quality, so our guarantee to customers is that if they aren’t happy with the quality than Wyevale Garden Centres will replace it with a new one up until Christmas Eve for free”.

The Writtle College team have attended the launch of the Young Gardeners of the Year 2016 and are looking forward to trying to retain their Best in Show crown for another year!

The competition – which saw the Writtle team win Best in Show, a gold medal and the People’s Choice award in 2015 – sees six of the UK’s leading horticultural colleges go head-to-head to design and build a sustainable urban garden at the Ideal Home Show.

The team – including lecturers Ben Wincott and Simon Watkins – went to the launch at the Ideal Home Show Christmas at Olympia, London, last week <27 November>.

Ben said: “We have an excellent and enthusiastic team of students again this year who are really looking forward to the competition and hopefully keeping our crown for another year!

“The competition is a brilliant way for students to gain top-level experience - designing and building a show garden tests your skills to the max, requiring creativity, management and coolness under the pressure of a demanding schedule. This experience is invaluable for their CVs and personal development.”

Run in association with TV Gardener David Domoney and the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community, the annual competition – now in its sixth year - celebrates young green talent.
The teams will create stunning show gardens, built in just one week, which will be seen by a quarter of a million visitors at the Ideal Home Show in March.

The competition launch day kicked off with introductions and presentations from TV gardener and event organiser David Domoney; Richard Morey, Group Events Director of Media 10, the organisers of the Ideal Home Show; Simon Sadinsky, from The Prince’s Foundation; Dr Stephen Millam, from Chichester College; and Writtle’s Ben Wincott.

The Prince’s Foundation sets clear guidelines for the garden design based on organic and sustainable principles. This year there is a new focus on education. The Prince’s Foundation has tasked the Young Gardeners with incorporating elements of an educational garden into the design. It should aim to inspire young people to reconnect with nature.

Simon Sadinsky, The Prince’s Foundation’s Head of Education, said: “This year, our vision is to see gardens that are not only visually appealing, but that can also act as a source of learning on a diversity of issues, such as health and nutrition, sustainability, biodiversity or art and science.  We want to see spaces that encourage young people to engage with nature, so that they feel the natural world is as important as it is beautiful, and a valuable resource to be protected.

“We are inviting the Young Gardeners to demonstrate the educational value of nature to encourage the interest of future generations in the natural environment and contribute to the creation of beautiful, sustainable places.”

The show gardens will be judged by an expert panel, including horticultural industry leaders, home and garden magazine editors and acclaimed garden designers. Entrants will compete to win the gold, silver gilt, silver or bronze award. The overall winner will receive the Best in Show award and be crowned the Young Gardeners of the Year 2016. Visitors to the gardens will be able to vote for their favourite to win the People’s Choice Award.

David Domoney, organiser of the competition, said: “I’m immensely proud to work with HRH The Prince of Wales and the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community, and to date we have given over 500 garden landscaping and design students the opportunity to build show gardens at a national event before they even leave the college gates.

“These young garden designers and landscape stars of the future are encouraged to use sustainable practices, which they will confidently pass on through generations. We look forward to seeing what these talented and inspiring young people create as they compete for the title of Young Gardeners of the Year.”

Young gardeners welcome apple tree home

Malcolm Mills from Castle Gardens gifted an Apple (Malus) Tom Putt tree to Trent Young’s Endowed School near Sherborne in Dorset.

With the help of the primary school’s very own Gardening Group, the old English dual purpose tree, which is thought to have been named after the Reverend Thomas Putt of Trent who served the parish 200 years ago, was planted to mark National Tree Week, the UK’s largest celebration of trees.

Malcolm explains: “After some research we found that the Tom Putt, which is a great cider apple but also good for cooking, has historical links to the village, so thought it would be the perfect gift to help these enthusiastic young gardeners celebrate National Tree Week. It is understood that this is one of only three Tom Putt apple trees growing in Trent today, even though it has grown widely in the south west for hundreds of years. I really hope the children manage to yield a great crop from this tree in years to come and begin to revive the heritage of the tree’s links with the village.”
