Planning permission granted for £10m Dobbies store

Planning permission has been granted for a 110,000 sq ft Dobbies Garden Centre in Northern Ireland – one of the largest retail lettings in the UK and Ireland in recent years...

Planning permission has been granted for a 110,000 sq ft Dobbies Garden Centre in Northern Ireland – one of the largest retail lettings in the UK and Ireland in recent years.

The £10m project at The Junction, a Lotus Property-owned retail and leisure park, will be Dobbies’ second venture in Northern Ireland, its largest store in Ireland and one of the largest in its UK portfolio.

Proposals for the 110,000 Sq ft store include outdoor and indoor plant areas; areas for gardening products, outdoor furniture, pets, gifting and toys, as well as cookshop and home décor; a foodhall, a children’s soft play area and new restaurant and café.

The store is expected to attract a footfall of around one million visitors per annum, creating 110 new full and part-time jobs, making it one of the largest employers at The Junction.

Welcoming the news, Alastair Coulson, Managing Director at Lotus Property, commented: “We’re thrilled to receive the news that planning permission has been granted for this flagship store. Not only is it fantastic news for The Junction and the local economy but also a signal that Northern Ireland is open for business. It is fast becoming one of the UK’s most promising retail environments, especially with regards edge of town shopping and leisure.”

Lotus Property was advised by Johnstone Property Consultants. Mark Johnstone, Managing Director said: “This is a hugely significant retail letting in Northern Ireland to what will be one of the largest Dobbies Garden Centres in its portfolio.  The scale of the store will allow Dobbies to deliver a tremendous customer experience, which is anticipated to bring up to one million customers per year. The scale of the signing is testament to the importance of physical retail stores and the continued strength of edge of town retail schemes.”

Graeme Jenkins, CEO at Dobbies said: “We’re delighted to have been given the green light to move ahead with our plans to open our store at The Junction, building on the success of our established Lisburn garden centre.

“Its prime position off the M2, just north of Belfast City Centre and towards the popular Antrim coast, will allow us to bring the Dobbies’ experience to a new area within Northern Ireland.”

Dobbies was founded in 1865 as Dobbie & Co and has grown and expanded in recent years to become the UK’s leading garden centre retailer. There are currently 74 Dobbies stores throughout the UK, but this will be just the second in Northern Ireland.

Horticulture industry responds to Defra consultation on ending retail sale of peat

The Growing Media Taskforce, an industry group consisting of the Garden Centre Association (GCA), Growing Media Association (GMA), National Farmers Union (NFU), and Responsible Sourcing Scheme (RSS) and chaired by the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), has submitted its response to the government’s consultation on the use of peat in horticulture, putting forward evidence that argues against legislation and calls for government to commit to taking action that will enable access to alternatives...

The Growing Media Taskforce, an industry group consisting of the Garden Centre Association (GCA), Growing Media Association (GMA), National Farmers Union (NFU), and Responsible Sourcing Scheme (RSS) and chaired by the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), has submitted its response to the government’s consultation on the use of peat in horticulture, putting forward evidence that argues against legislation and calls for government to commit to taking action that will enable access to alternatives.

Views from across the industry, including growers, manufacturers and retailers, have shaped what stands as horticulture’s response to a Defra proposal to ban peat from retail sale by 2024.

Acknowledgment of the need to transition to peat-free as part of a wider commitment to improving the sustainability of horticulture is at the heart of the response, which outlines opportunities for government and industry to collaborate and highlights the unintended consequences a ban would have on an industry that has well-documented positive effects on society – particularly people’s mental health and wellbeing – is a key enabler in government’s green ambitions and contributes £29bn a year to GDP and generates £6.3bn in tax revenues.

With latest figures showing peat-use continuing to decrease across the board*, the taskforce says that primary legislation is not necessary and instead government should commit to working with industry to unlock policy barriers to speed up access to materials such as wood, coir and green waste.

Chairman of the HTA and Chair of the Growing Media Taskforce, James Barnes, said: “Horticulture is a green industry at its core, providing the trees and plants that will enable government to progress towards net zero and achieve the goals of its 25-year environment plan. There is no question that peat use should be phased out, however, without access to the necessary quantities of alternatives, it is not dramatic to predict huge damage to UK growers and retailers and a knock-on effect for the millions of people who enjoy gardening.”

The response also raises the concerns of the edible horticulture sector, with particular regard to the challenges that mushroom producers and the propagation of some brassicas and leafy salad crops face.  Both rely heavily on peat, as its benefits are not easily replicated.

“Growers are investing in finding suitable alternatives but more time and collaboration with government is required”, Barnes continued.  “As a sector geared towards providing the nation with healthy, affordable British food, we are asking government to work with us until such time a commercial material delivers the biological benefits of peat, without unintentionally impacting our domestic food security.

“Our response to this consultation sets out how we can ensure a manageable transition to peat-free growing media and demonstrates that collaboration, not legislation, is the key to finding solutions to the complex challenges of the issue.

“Defra’s proposals represent further new regulatory policy from the Government that will impact our industry despite the Government’s principles outlined to do the opposite in their recent publication ‘The Benefits of Brexit’**.

“The industry is already working incredibly hard to advance progress through education, by way of the Responsible Sourcing Scheme for example, and product development. Government action needs to complement this - by way of funding for more research and development and grants for new technologies and removing policy barriers to the alternatives we know are out there. ”

The taskforce has committed to end the sector’s use of peat, pledging to remove it from the retail market as early as 2025 and no later than the end 2028.

Read the full Growing Media Taskforce submission using this link

Here is the Headline Summary from the submission:

1. The Growing Media Taskforce has developed a challenging, yet achievable programme of activity to attain peat free status for horticulture, without the need for regulatory action. Some areas are focussed on industry actions, others on Government actions.

2. A buoyant horticulture sector contributes positively to society, to the economy and fulfils many of the Government’s own ambitions around climate change mitigation and a healthy environment. This sector is at risk if the transition away from peat is not managed correctly.

3. To remove peat from horticulture is not a question of if, it is entirely a question of when. The taskforce in 2021 committed to end the sector’s use of peat, pledging to remove it from the retail market as early as 2025 and no later than the end 2028. For professional horticulture, the range is between 2028 and 2030.

4. Of paramount importance is the urgent implementation of a manageable transition from peat to peat free growing media. For that, Government assistance is essential, without the need for legislative action. That Government assistance needs to be in the form of access to peat alternatives, research and development, the principle of exemptions and understanding fully the unintended consequences of introducing primary legislation. A ban is unnecessary, and the measures Government have proposed in this consultation will not achieve a healthy, productive, peat-free UK horticulture sector.

5. Government actions should not harm an industry that at its very core contributes to excellent mental health and wellbeing, adds positively to the healthy eating agenda, enhances the environment, and supports green jobs and the green economy. Food security, green cities, plant-based nutrition, afforestation are examples of areas that must all be considered when proposing to remove peat from horticulture. The full set of Taskforce recommended Government actions can be viewed in ANNEX C of the full submission (link above)

6. The Taskforce is disappointed with Defra’s economic impact assessment, and its use in justifying its preferred policy proposals. The Impact Assessment is not reflective of the true costs to the sector and is based upon flawed assumptions, not least the assertion that peat is extracted for horticulture from over 5,000 hectares of land. Such inaccuracies create serious flaws in Defra’s assessment of the environmental and economic consequences of the policy options. Without positive government action the horticulture sector – both ornamental and edible - will be harmed. On the other hand, positive government action to aid peat removal, for example on enabling greater access to peat alternatives, co-ordinating the required research and development and ensuring businesses can access capital investment has been omitted from consideration.

7. The unintended consequences of introducing legislation must be considered and evaluated before introduction. Pulling one policy lever – e.g., the removal of peat in horticulture without a commercially viable alternative material, may have unintended consequences e.g., food security and access to affordable food.

When Haskins acquired Forest Lodge Garden Centre, it was in the process of transitioning its hard landscaping product range over to Meadow View Stone. This presented an opportunity for Haskins to witness firsthand the benefits that Meadow View could offer, both in the uplift in sales and customer service levels.

With Forest Lodge seeing significant benefits, Haskins then trialed Meadow View Stone exclusively in their West End Store, leaving the other stores with their previous supplier for a 12-month period.

The sales and service levels were then compared across the branches and the results speak for themselves, with the West End store substantially out performing any of the other centres :

  • Rockery sales increased by 150%.
  • Aggregate sales increased by 26% compared to only 11% at other centres.
  • Paving sales increased by 11%.
  • Four of the top five selling products were exclusive to the Meadow View Stone offer.
  • The above resulted in 40% of all sales turnover in the aggregates category coming from products that were exclusive to Meadow View Stone.

Sarah Hayden & Kate Sharman-Courtney then visited Meadow Views 24-acre southern production facility at Rye, where the companies vast stock holding and production facilities, gave them the confidence that Meadow View would be a dependable supply partner for the group.

This resulted in an exclusive supply agreement for all Haskins stores for the foreseeable future.

The transition within all the stores is now complete, with Meadow View Stones Managing Director, Sarah Hill stating: “Haskins are a fantastic account whose business strategy works closely in synergy with our own, offering premium quality products with a point of difference. Our team have worked hard to secure the opportunity that Haskins provided us, and we will continue to develop and progress this exciting trading relationship.”

Garden centre cafe brings nature indoors with Mosswall made from living lichen

Cardwell Garden Centre in Scotland has covered a large wall of their cafe in GREEN LICHEN in a bid to bring the natural world indoors...

Cardwell Garden Centre in Scotland has covered a large wall of their cafe in GREEN LICHEN in a bid to bring the natural world indoors.

Interior designers created the Mosswall as part of a six-figure makeover of the popular Patio Cafe eatery, at Cardwell Garden Centre near Gourock.

The unusual move to use thousands of pieces of hand-harvested living lichen, imported from Italy as part of the décor, has environmental benefits of improving air quality, reducing airborne dust and is even said to clean virus particles from the atmosphere.

Patio Café manager, Bernadette Sime said: “We’re really proud of our new-look Patio Café that brings nature straight to your coffee table.

“We’ve embraced the natural world and brought it indoors with a re-design using lots of natural wood, plants and foliage and our showstopper Mosswall, which should get everyone talking.

“While we’ve retained our traditional tables and chairs for a sit-down meal, we’ve also brought a more relaxing, warm and calm ambience to the popular eatery.

“We’ve also installed new atmospheric rattan and festoon lighting throughout The Patio, as well as leather sofas, luxurious padded banquet seating and coffee tables.”

The Patio Café now has a Little Deer Den play area for small children to enjoy with comfortable seating nearby where the grown-ups can keep an eye on the youngsters while enjoying a relaxing cuppa.

Bernadette continued: “We wanted to created different kinds of spaces for everyone to enjoy and The Patio is certainly the ideal place for meeting up with friends and family for tea, coffee and a chat in a cosy atmosphere. And of course, one of the famous Patio Café luxury cakes that are most certainly still on the menu!

“We’ve had a fabulous makeover, but one thing hasn’t changed – and that’s the fabulous range of food and refreshments we serve our valued customers.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone, so come along and see the new look for themselves.”

Cardwell managing director, Drew Gallagher added: “We’ve had a great reaction from visitors to the new-look Patio Café.

“We always look at ways of supporting local businesses and 75 per cent of the spend on the project went to companies from Inverclyde.”

The Patio Café refurbishment was designed and project managed by Mariessa Devlin, from Inverclyde-based Devlin Interior Design with rendering and engineers’ drawings by Rebecchi Architectural, in Gourock.

Mariessa said: “My focus has been on the use of biophilic design, bringing the natural environment of the outdoors and the creation of space that promotes wellness for Cardwell’s customers.”

Applications now open for GCA Rising Stars programme

Members of the Garden Centre Association are being encouraged to put forward their employees for the organisation’s Rising Stars programme taking place throughout the year.

The GCA will once again be running its Rising Stars programme, sponsored by Westland Horticulture, focusing on core gardening.

Iain Wylie, GCA Chief Executive, said: “The application process for our Rising Stars programme is now open and if garden centre managers or owners feel they have a member of staff who is a rising star within the business, then they should seriously consider putting them forward for the process.

“The candidate should, in your opinion, be a rising star or have the potential to be one in your business. They should have a passion or desire to contribute to this year’s environmental and sustainability topic, hold a position below management level and be available to attend a series of virtual and face-to-face workshops throughout the year.

“They should also have access to financial data, including sales and cost prices, be able to demonstrate a drive and commitment that they wish to be developed, and have sales ideas for growing an area of the business in a sustainable or environmental manner.

“The best performing finalists will be invited to the last workshops in the series and will then be invited to attend our annual conference in January 2023, where they will present the progress made on their project idea to the attendees. Gordon Emslie will provide coaching in presentation skills in advance of the conference.”

Applications, which are available from info@gca.org.uk should be completed and sent to laura@gca.org.uk before Friday, March 25, 2022.

Iain added: “The Rising Stars process is a fantastic opportunity for anyone nominated as they’ll be able to develop and manage their skills, and be mentored by experts in the gardening industry. It is like no other training they will receive and everything they learn will be brought back and instilled into the garden centre they work for, so everyone benefits.”

Through sharing information and its inspection programme the GCA helps members to achieve high standards in customer service, plant quality and reliability.

Simon McArdle, Divisional Director for Hardware at Westland Horticulture, said: “Westland value the special partnership we have with garden centres. Over the last 13 years, together with the GCA, we have supported hundreds of young horticulturalists to acquire the skills that enable them to pursue careers in this amazing and rewarding industry. We look forward to helping the next crop of Rising Stars take their next step.”

elho recycling bins launch across Dobbies’ stores

Sustainable plant pot designer elho has joined forces with garden centre retailer Dobbies to grant gardeners a new way of minimising their plastic waste and impact on the planet...

Sustainable plant pot designer elho has joined forces with garden centre retailer Dobbies to grant gardeners a new way of minimising their plastic waste and impact on the planet.

As part of the partnership, elho’s innovative recycling bins have been installed across 69 of Dobbies’ garden centres, and gardeners are encouraged to bring their old plastic plant pots and seed trays to be recycled in Dobbies’ stores.

This initiative comes as new research from Dobbies Garden Centres reveals that 35% of gardeners want to recycle more of their garden waste products this spring.

The survey was based on responses from 2,003 UK adults between 4 March and 7 March 2022.

Both companies are champions of sustainability with industry-leading green initiatives, and the plastic pot recycling bins are the latest innovation in this. elho places nature at its core and boasts a number of sustainable credentials, including the production of only 100% recyclable plant pots that are made from recycled materials, using 100% renewable wind energy from the company’s very own wind-powered factory in the Netherlands. Last year alone, the company recycled more than 13 million kilograms of recycled plastic to create its beautifully designed pots.

Chris Buck, Northern Account Manager at elho, explained: “We’re pleased to be working on this initiative with Dobbies to encourage gardeners to recycle their plant pots, and to make it incredibly easy for them to do so. It’s great to be working together to collect plastic garden waste and give it a second lease of life, instead of sending mountains of it to landfill.”

“It has been widely reported that kerbside recycling of plant pots is challenging, with policies varying significantly from council to council. We wanted to help provide gardeners with a simple, convenient solution to dispose of their plant pots in an environmentally friendly way. When visiting the centre to buy more plants, simply return your old pots – it couldn’t be easier!”

Dobbies’ goal is for the initiative to provide customers with the knowledge that plant trays and pots they have purchased are recyclable in store. Like elho, Dobbies is committed to delivering environmentally friendly practices, products and sustainable solutions.

Marcus Eyles, Horticultural Director at Dobbies Garden Centres, added: “We are always looking for ways to embed sustainability into our operations, and this is a positive step forward in our #SustainableDobbies journey.

“We also know from our own research that this is also something our customers are increasingly passionate about, and while we have encouraged pot recycling for a number of years in-store, these new bins provide customers with a clear message and opportunity to recycle.”

Update on Greenfingers garden builds

With over 60 stunning garden builds under its belt, the Greenfingers Charity is looking to add even more therapeutic spaces to its portfolio as a number of ongoing projects draw to a close and a selection of new garden builds break ground...

With over 60 stunning garden builds under its belt, the Greenfingers Charity is looking to add even more therapeutic spaces to its portfolio as a number of ongoing projects draw to a close and a selection of new garden builds break ground.

Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising & Communications at Greenfingers provides an update on what 2022 has in store.

COMPLETED GARDENS

Haven House - Woodford Green, Essex

Haven House in Woodford Green, Essex, is a nurse-led hospice for babies, children and young people under 19 who have life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. The hospice, which provides round-the-clock care, 365 days a year, to the children and their families, asked the Greenfingers charity to help create a ‘place to escape to’ for the patients, families and friends, as well as the staffing team.

The new Reflective Garden at Haven House is set to be completed any day now, helping to breathe new life into an unused area of woodland at the rear of the hospice

Designed by award-winning RHS Chelsea designer, Tom Hoblyn and brought to life by Stewarts Landscapes, the new garden – almost 300m2 in size - includes a series of board walk style pathways which lead to secluded and private refuges for children, families, and staff to spend quiet time together. The garden has benefitted from two incredible volunteering days, which have helped to bring it together and also provide additional funding. An official opening ceremony will take place later this year.

Ty Hafan - Vale of Glamorgan

Greenfingers’ 63rd garden was completed in November 2021 and will have its opening on Wednesday April 27th, 2022. As one of the UK’s leading paediatric palliative care services, offering care to children and support for their families throughout Wales, the new sensory garden – designed by Victoria Wade – offers year-round accessibility and is designed to encourage biodiversity, sustainability and wildlife, helping the children to connect with the natural world. The garden benefits from willow arches, a woodland den, a covered seating area with electricity and hand washing facilities.

The Greenfingers charity is grateful to The Heritage Lottery, the Postcode Lottery and many more friends of the charity for supporting this project.

FORTHCOMING GARDENS

The Nook – Norfolk

East Anglia’s Children Hospice’s (EACH) newest site, The Nook – officially opened by HRH, The Duchess of Cambridge in 2019 – is representative of one of the largest garden projects the charity has ever undertaken, with the three-acre site set to benefit from Greenfingers’ support.

The first garden space to be built there will be the new Rest & Reflect Garden, located at the top of the site. Designed by Greenfingers’ patron, Anne-Marie Powell, the build has only been possible thanks to a range of generous donations, including from leading skincare brand, Clarins, and the Leisure and Outdoor Furniture Association (LOFA), as well as product donations from Evergreen Garden Care.

This special space – the first of many gardens to be built at The Nook – will feature quiet corners where families can relax together. All of the gardens within the master plan will eventually be connected by wheelchair accessible pathways designed to encourage participation and not just spectating.

Jigsaw Cumbria's Children's Hospice – Carlisle

This forthcoming garden space will look to transform a dull outdoor space into a fun and stimulating play area for children with complex disabilities and their families. Local designer, Bruce Walker, has been brought onboard to create a cohesive design using the colours of the Jigsaw logo. Bruce’s design features a ‘Green Jungle Garden’, a ‘Yellow Wildlife Garden’, an ‘Indigo Sensory Area’ for relaxation, plus a bright blue art area, sage green play area and an orange kitchen garden for growing herbs and experimenting with seeds and grow-your-own projects. This exciting play garden project is earmarked to begin in build April/May 2022.

Demelza Hospice – Sittingbourne, Kent

Demelza Hospice Care for Children, based in Sittingbourne – the site of Greenfingers’ first-ever garden – will see saw Andrew Fisher Tomlin from multi-award-winning garden designers, Fisher Tomlin & Bowyer, take control of this exciting design.

The old garden will benefit from a full revamp including new works to the pond and a new wildlife safari including a wild meadow to attract butterflies and bees, plus an ant walk and animal highway.  This garden, which will be accessible for all those who spend time in the hospice, is set to have the largest bug hotel in the whole of Kent.

Part of this revamped garden space may look familiar to some as it will include elements from Baz Grainger’s 2021 RHS Hampton Court show garden.

Derian House, Chorley

Garden designer, Chris Forshaw, has been tasked with transforming a tired courtyard garden at Derian House. The garden is currently only accessed via the main hospice building and bedrooms; places where privacy is of the upmost importance. Tackling this issue will be a key component of Chris’ design, where a mixture of interactive zones will be linked together by a central covered space. The design has also included elements of imaginative and subdued lighting and extra seating whilst maintaining the privacy of the gardens outside the bedrooms.

The build at Derian House is set to get underway in autumn 2022.

REVAMPED SPACES

Thanks to a generous donation from a private donor, the charity is now able to revisit hospices it has worked with in the past to ensure that very old Greenfingers gardens continue to be useable spaces.  Helen & Douglas House in Oxford, Keech Hospice Care in Luton and Richard House in East London have recently benefitted from the initiative.

Megan Webb wins Aberconway Award

The Chartered Institute of Horticulture has announced the winner of the 2022 Aberconway Award. Megan Webb has won this year's prize for the best dissertation submitted by a student or horticulturist under the age of 30.

Megan, who studied BSc (Hons) Horticulture at Writtle University College in Essex, said: "I was both shocked and overjoyed to learn that I had received the Aberconway Award. I was so proud to hear that my dissertation, which was about a subject I am most passionate about, was to receive an award."

Megan research aimed to increase our understanding of carnivorous plants. Her dissertation looked at the morphological plasticity of Sarracenia seedlings in response to supplementary nutrients.

"My findings concluded that Sarracenia seedlings had the best growth response in regard to the control treatment (where no nutrients were added) compared to that of foliar and soil fertilisation," she explained.

"The results followed a natural ecological pattern, where plants invested in greater carnivory for larger prey intake in response to lack of nutrients. Supplementary nutrients, especially that of soil, caused plants to focus on colour, shape and pitcher number faster. Overall, offering amateur growers potential to achieve visual traits amongst seedlings more quickly. However, there is a lack of existing scientific studies surrounding the subject of carnivorous plants, thus further research needs to be undertaken to sustain the future of this particular plant group."

Megan hopes to build a career that combines research into, and the conservation of, these fascinating species. She said: "Learning about the different areas of horticulture allowed me to gain experience in both written and practical aspects. My lecturers, peers and research have given me a clearer picture of what I want to do in the future."

Dr Anya Perera, Head of the School for Sustainable Environments and Design at Writtle University College, said: "We're delighted by Megan's success. Her dissertation is an excellent achievement, especially as she completed it during lockdown. Thank you to CIH for offering students this opportunity and for all the positive work you do in helping to raising the profile of horticulture."

Megan has been invited to attend the Harrogate Spring Plant Show, where she will be officially presented with the Aberconway Award at The Chartered Institute of Horticulture's AGM on Saturday 23rd April.

Poundbury Gardens near Dorchester is supplying a selection of shrubs and herbaceous perennials for Kingston Maurward’s The Space Within Garden, which will appear in the Sanctuary Garden category at RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Set to be used by a 100-strong team of students and staff to help create a melodic fusion of shade, light and movement, while celebrating Dorset horticulture at the UK’s most prestigious flower show, this support forms part of the garden centre’s initiative to undertake 15 community planting projects in celebration of its 15th anniversary.

Designed by Kingston Maurward’s own garden designer, Michelle Brown, The Space Within Garden takes inspiration from the gardens of the French Riviera, combining styles from Europe and Dorset.

In keeping with the project’s zero waste philosophy, Mike Burks, managing director of The Gardens Group, is supplying around 30 varieties of plants and recycled pots that have been brought back to the garden centres by customers.

Sourced locally, the herbaceous perennials include Omphalodes ‘Cherry Ingram’, Heuchera ‘Green Spice’ and Tiarella ‘Pink Skyrocket’, with Buxus sempervirens, Fatsia japonica ‘Variegata’ Sarcococca ‘Ghorepani’ among the plants and shrubs being used.

While the horticultural students have been developing design ideas and potting up and growing on the plant deliveries from Poundbury Gardens, those studying wildlife and conservation are constructing a sanctuary wall using reclaimed timber from Kingston Maurward’s 750-acre estate and platform structures are being built by the welding, fabrication and blacksmithing department.

The Space Within Garden will be among 12 Sanctuary Gardens on show at RHS Chelsea Flower Show from Tuesday 24 to Saturday 28 May 2022.

Throughout 2021, staff at Tong voted for their colleagues to be recognised as monthly Values Award Winners in the six categories of Team, Excellence, Honest, Responsible, Accountable and Positive. The management team then selected the six overall champions from the 12 monthly winners.

Each of the six main awards recognised team members' commitment to championing the values that are at the heart of the business. The awards were presented by Tong's co-owner, Tom Megginson, Chairman, David Stanhope and Finance Director, Charlie Barker. The winners were:

Terrance Waterhouse from the Mezzanine Kitchen was voted the ‘Team' values champion for showing support to colleagues in his own and other teams.

Leigh Quinn from Marketing was voted the ‘Excellence' values champion for only settling for GREAT!

Kirsty Blake from Grass Hoppers was voted the ‘Honest' values champion for being consistent and reliable.

Edwina Whitwam from Giftware was voted the ‘Respectful' values champion for being respectful, courteous and considerate towards everyone and everything.

James Tolson from Garden Sundries was voted the ‘Accountable' values champion for taking ownership in difficult situations and always taking pride in his work.

Jane Day from Indoor Plants and Gift was voted the ‘Positive' values champion for being great to work with and always finding a way to get the job done, even in trying circumstances.

Tong's Head of People and Culture, Neil Barwise-Carr said: "We had such a great evening celebrating the business's performance over the last year and rewarding everyone in our team for making that success possible: the buzz in the room was electric.

"As we grow and look to open a new site later this year, embedding a culture built on our values becomes even more important and we're proud to recognise and reward the team's outstanding contribution. Congratulations to our fantastic Values Awards winners for helping to make Tong a great place to work."

New journeys towards sustainability encouraged through latest HTA roadmap initiative

As part of its sustainability roadmap, the Horticultural Trades Association has launched a new scheme to enable its members to share best practice and experience with each other and build a supportive community...

As part of its sustainability roadmap, the Horticultural Trades Association has launched a new scheme to enable its members to share best practice and experience with each other and build a supportive community.

Sustainability Reference Sites are HTA member businesses who are already doing considerable work in terms of implementing positive change and embedding sustainability into their business plans.

The first HTA Sustainability Reference Sites have been named as Hillier Nurseries, The Barton Grange Group, The Gardens Group and New Wood Trees.

Liz Williams, HTA Sustainability Executive said “I am thrilled to be able to announce our new Sustainability Reference Site scheme. We have some members who are doing fantastic things to improve their businesses in a sustainable way and can share their experiences with other HTA members. This is an exciting step to continue helping our members along their own sustainability journeys.”

The reference sites are ready to share their knowledge among HTA members and to champion the industry to those outside of it.

George Hillier from Hillier said “We are delighted to be included in the Horticultural Trades Association’s reference sites programme and are thrilled to have the opportunity to share some ideas around reducing carbon footprint. We have implemented various green alternatives when designing Hillier Garden Centre Three Legged Cross, and we hope to spread this knowledge and create action amongst our friends and colleagues throughout the industry.”

Mike Burks of the Gardens Group added “I quite often hear people say that the scale of the environmental and sustainability challenge is so great that they don’t know where to start. But my belief is that no matter where we each start from, it’s important to take a first step so that collectively we can make a huge difference.”

Philip Nieuwoudt of New Wood Trees said “Sustainability is a huge topic, and it can be very difficult to know where to start. There is an overwhelming amount of information available and knowing what to focus on is not easy. Most businesses do not have the luxury of having a staff member dedicated to sustainability and finding the time to understand and implement changes is challenging. This is why we feel it’s important to take part in this scheme. Businesses need to share their knowledge and help each other make the changes which are so desperately needed.”

There will be opportunities for HTA members to engage and interact with our Sustainability Reference Sites throughout the year, so members should look out for more on this soon.

Nemaslug harnesses nature to reduce plastic packaging

Leading pest control solutions manufacturer, BASF, has reduced the plastic packaging of its popular Nemaslug product by one third, thanks to the introduction of a new slug control nematode species...

Leading pest control solutions manufacturer, BASF, has reduced the plastic packaging of its popular Nemaslug product by one third, thanks to the introduction of a new slug control nematode species.

This is in line with company’s sustainability goals and its aims to provide a greener option for slug control.

Nematodes occur naturally in the soil and seek out and kill specific target pests. They attack the pest by entering its body and releasing a bacterium which quickly and effectively kills it.

The nematodes then reproduce inside the dying pest and release a new generation of hungry nematodes, which disperse and search for further prey, protecting the area for up to five weeks.

By tapping into the benefits of this naturally occurring friend of the gardener, soil can remain healthy, while ensuring slugs are conquered and plants protected.

The company is dedicated to investing in research and development to ensure that it is able to provide the highest quality nematodes to gardeners, and is keen to create a product that will appeal to those looking for a greener option for slug control. It is this dedication to research and development that has enabled the discovery of a new species of nematode to use in its Nemaslug product.

The new species, the Phasmarhabditis californica, will provide the same high efficacy rates as the original species, and will be applied in exactly the same way, but has additional benefits, too.

This species of nematode can be packed at much higher concentrations, which has allowed for the significant reduction of pack sizes. More efficient storage as well as fewer containers being needed to transport the product, further reduces the carbon footprint. On top of this, improvements made to production has led to a reduction of over 20 ton of Co2 emissions in each run, while the UK based facility negates the need for carbon-heavy international shipping.

This small but powerful box of fresh nematodes can be delivered directly to gardeners’ doors throughout the growing season to ensure that slugs can be controlled effectively by harnessing the power of nature.

Altico appoints Richard Pyrah as Commercial Director

Having invested more than £6m since acquisition in May 2021, Altico Managing Director, Antony Harker, has announced further investment in personnel, with the senior team appointment of Richard Pyrah as Commercial Director.

Richard began his career in the Gardening industry over 20 years ago and has built a reputation as one of the most respected professionals in the sector.

With a two-year GIMA Presidency under his belt (2018-2020) and high profile commercial roles in both Town and Country and latterly Kelkay as Sales Director, Richard brings a wealth of experience to the team.

Speaking of the appointment, Antony Harker said: “It is crucial to have someone of Richard’s calibre and specific Garden Centre sales expertise on board. The team have done a fantastic job launching the business over the last 10 months, and now with Richard driving the Commercial function, it will ensure Altico is primed for new opportunities ahead. His experience and insight into the needs of garden centre customers is invaluable.

“Richard played a pivotal role in building the sales team and establishing the customer portfolio that propelled Kelkay forwards in the industry. We’ve built a fantastic relationship over the last decade, so I’m enjoying working with him again.”

At Altico, Antony describes a culture of shared experiences, lessons learned and having a down to earth approach that comes from being confident in its abilities and clear in its goals.

“It’s all about relationships and delivering on your promises in this business, as you’re only as good as your last delivery” he says. “I’m in the business 3 days a week, and my role is really to support and guide the team to take responsibility for creating Altico’s future. Better said, it’s the team’s business to shape, but we all understand that the best results happen when we work together to achieve them.”

Richard has spent his first weeks focusing on delivering Altico’s 2022 seasonal commitments, whilst beginning to cultivate medium-to-long term strategic development plans.

“I am delighted to be joining such a progressive business that has quickly established a name for itself in the market” said Richard. “I believe that my extensive knowledge of the industry will enable me to make a significant contribution to Altico’s expansion and success, and I’m ready to roll my sleeves up with the team to build our growth strategy.”

“It’s motivating to be facing a completely new challenge” added Richard. “Since starting, I’ve been building key relationships with the sales team, who each bring their own credentials and are doing a superb job. I’m a firm believer in leading from the front, so I’ve been actively involved in numerous Garden Centre set-ups too, and I’ve loved reconnecting with many customers in the process.

“I feel privileged to have made long-term relationships across this industry over the last 20 years, so I’m looking forward to seeing plenty of familiar faces in the coming weeks and months for a good catch up!”

Richard added: “I’m really excited for the future and to take the Commercial team to the next level. By harnessing their ideas and knowledge alongside our customers, I’ve no doubt we’ll create future plans that will support mutual growth.”

Greensleeves awarded 5-star franchisee satisfaction

Horticultural franchise, Greensleeves, has been awarded the WorkBuzz 5-star ranking for the second consecutive year...

Horticultural franchise, Greensleeves, has been awarded the WorkBuzz 5-star ranking for the second consecutive year.

The independent survey, which invited the company’s franchisees to identify how the brand was performing, scored top marks for its products, services and infrastructure. The franchisees also showed their confidence in their parent company with every single franchisee signing up for a renewal of their franchise.

WorkBuzz, who has been gathering objective feedback from franchisees across 200+ brands since 2011 for their Franchisee Satisfaction Benchmark Survey, announced that Greensleeves had received 5-star levels of franchisee satisfaction status, demonstrating its position as an industry leader of lawn care franchising. The company also achieved a record-breaking network turnover for the second year in a row in 2021, something which the franchise attributes to its great relationships with its franchisees.

“What an unbelievable start to 2022! We are delighted to receive the WorkBuzz 5-Star Franchisee Satisfaction Award again - it is a great tribute to all the head office team at Greensleeves and the fantastic work they do. We have worked hard during these challenging times to expand the network, maintain our standards, and create a brand people are proud to be part of. I’m thrilled to see our efforts reflected in the report and it’s a real credit to all the team here in head office who support our franchise partners,” said David Truby, Managing Director of Greensleeves.

“After the WorkBuzz survey results last year, we identified areas where we could improve and as a result we have worked hard to address these issues over the past year. Communication was an area we decided we wanted to develop, especially with the pandemic throwing up challenges around meeting franchisees face to face. We enhanced and added to our communication by providing our franchisees with more Zoom meetings, regular Question and Answer sessions and introduced a new franchise forum. It’s amazing to now see all of our hard work paying off.

“We’re proud to receive a 97% score from our franchisees agreeing our team is willing to go the extra mile, but we won’t be resting on our laurels any time soon. There’s still plenty we can do to   ensure we continue to provide our network of over 100 franchisees the tools to succeed over the coming year,” added David.

The Burpee Europe team are popping with excitement about their new sweetcorn range!  Whether you like to pop or nibble your corn, these varieties will bring colour to your garden, kitchen and popcorn bowl!

This major new range of sweetcorn for 2022 has been bred in the US by our partners Crookham & Co. The varieties have been tested extensively in the UK and the Netherlands and produce some of the finest sweetcorn available in the world today.

Ornamental Corn 'Fiesta'
This traditional “Indian” corn produces kernels with a kaleidoscope of hues in blue, red, yellow and white. Its superb for  autumn decoration!  It matures approximately 10-14 days earlier than other ornamental corn.  These stunning cobs average 18-25 cm in length.
Sun: full sun
Height: 2 m
Spread: 80 cm
Days to Maturity from Sowing: 110
Uses: vegetable garden

Popcorn Corn 'Robust'
Although seldom grown in Northern Europe, popcorn can perform very successfully across most of the continent. ‘Robust’ is the best variety for adaptability across a range of climates and has attractive bright yellow-orange kernels. It must be dried for 3 to 4 weeks before cooking but is otherwise easy and fun to prepare. Popcorn should be kept away from sweetcorn to avoid cross pollination.

Height: 2 m
Spread: 80 cm
Days to Maturity from Sowing: 105
Uses: vegetable garden

Sweetcorn 'Ambrosia'
“Designer” corn with flair and style in abundance. A bicoloured variety with yellow/white kernels, it delivers deliciously tasty cobs to your garden on reliably disease-resistant plants.
Sun: full sun
Height: 1.95 m
Spread: 80 cm
Days to Maturity from Sowing: 80

New owners at Coolings

Staff at Coolings Nurseries’ four sites in Kent & East Sussex had a wonderful surprise last week when Paul Cooling announced that 75% of the third-generation company was being signed over to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT)...

Staff at Coolings Nurseries’ four sites in Kent & East Sussex had a wonderful surprise last week when Paul Cooling announced that 75% of the third-generation company was being signed over to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT).

Paul said: “We had already planned a meal at The House of Commons to celebrate successful navigation of the Covid pandemic and now we have an extra reason to raise a glass”.

In speeches, former shareholders David Cooling and Gary Carvosso paid tribute to Michael & Shirley Cooling who both passed away before the pandemic.  It was Michael who took on the half acre Chislehurst site from his father in the 1960s and developed it into a profitable business before relocating to the now famous 14-acre site in Knockholt in 1990.

Paul Cooling, who retains a 25% shareholding, praised the Executive Directors for guiding the business since their last celebration at the House of Commons in recognition of the company’s centenary in 2013.  “Back then, we had 2 sites, just over 100 employees and sales of around £6 Million. Now we have 4 sites, nearly 200 employees and sales well over £12 Million!”.

In addressing the team regarding the EOT he said: “You’ve earned it”.

Coinciding with the change of ownership, Gary Carvosso now becomes Chairman, Paul Cooling takes up the new role of Vice Chairman and Dwayne Ross becomes Managing Director.  Ian Hazon is Production & Operations Director and David Cooling has now left the business.

A congregation of around 600 gathered in Manchester Cathedral on Thursday evening, 10th March, to celebrate the success of the Blue Diamond Group over the past two years.

MD, Alan Roper, led the Blue Diamond event, dancing onto the stage before extolling the great efforts of his garden centre teams. "By investing all our profits back into the centres we have rapidly grown in size.  We'll be ahead of Dobbies by 2023! I'm currently working on 4 new acquisitions at the moment too."

As no awards could be presented in 2021 the main awards for Blue Diamond Garden Centres of the Year were each won by two centres, one the winner for 2021 and one for 2022. East Bridgford & Grosvenor were the Oak Award winners for Destination Centres with Nailsworth & Matlock the Acorn Award winners for Core Garden Centres.

After a glamorous night of celebration in the knave of Manchester Cathedral (see GTN's Exclusive photo gallery below) guests were transported by coach to the "After Party" at Impossible Theatre in central Manchester, where the photos stopped!

Hare Hatch Sheeplands finally gets go ahead for ‘green’ garden centre

Hare Hatch Sheeplands near Reading in Berkshire has finally had its plan for a green community focussed garden centre approved after a long and protracted process.

In a statement, the directors Rob Scott, Andy Dicks and Nick Barnett said: “Shute End members of the WBC (West Berkshire Council) planning committee voted overwhelmingly to pass our application to become a garden centre against the officers’ recommendation.

“Our planning case and the views of our customers and local community were conveyed brilliantly by Alyson Jones, of Boyer planning, and Mark A’Bear, a resident of Charvil and customer of many years.

“Dr. Stephen Conway, member for Twyford, was magnificent in leading the debate and proposed that the plans should be passed. Nine out of 10 members from across the political spectrum agreed with his proposal and voted in favour of passing the planning application.

“It was notable that of all the things discussed, in a very thorough and civilised debate, listening to what their residents wanted was a key factor in helping the members to reach their decision.

“So a huge thank you to each and every one of you who have supported us through the years as we have made this journey together, without your support we would have given up years ago.

“We would also like to thank the team.  To all of the Hare Hatch Sheeplands employees and associates past and present who have shared the dream through times of such uncertainty. It is them that have shaped Hare Hatch Sheeplands and made it the place that you enjoy coming to.

“Finally, we would also like to thank our families who have shared the sleepless nights and stress and provided the motivation to continue.  We can now look forward to a new chapter as Hare Hatch Sheeplands Garden Centre as we build the business together.  With that in mind we can begin to seek avenues of financing to enable the plans to turn into reality.”

Rob added: “I am truly humbled by the numerous letters and emails of support that were sent by our customers and the local community to support this application and all those that went before.  It is exciting that we are now able to provide the facilities at Hare Hatch Sheeplands that our customers and the community have been demanding for a very long time.”

With a hall brimming with quality plants and awash with colour, the Klondyke Group's annual Plant Show took place on 2nd March 2022.

Held at the Inchyra Grange Hotel close to the group’s Head Office and new Klondyke Garden Centre at Polmont,  over 20 suppliers exhibited at the show.

The show, which was attended by the Group’s 22 Plant Managers and Horticultural Buying Team, gave the perfect opportunity to plan and select stock for the 2022 season by bringing them together with many of the best from the UK plant supply chain.

The show also saw the launch of Klondyke’s new Grow Your Own branding and showcased their Hello Spring … now’s the time campaign, again new for 2022.

Klondyke’s Head of Buying Andy Smith organised the show and commented “We really appreciate the support of our suppliers, we will continue to work closely with our supply base to introduce new and interesting lines to our ranges. Without the support of our suppliers, we have no business, so it is very important for us to work with them for the continued success of our business.

"I would like to thank all our suppliers for the support they have given our business over the last few years, I hope 2022 is a success for everyone”.

During the show, Allensmore Nurseries were presented with the Klondyke Group’s award for Supplier of the Year 2021.

Will Thomas, Account Manager at Allensmore Nurseries received the award and commented: “We were absolutely delighted to be awarded ‘Supplier of the Year’ at the recent Klondyke Spring Show. We have a superb relationship with the team at Klondyke and over the last few years have worked closely with them to develop the range that we supply. Like Klondyke we are a family run business who really pride ourself on quality and service, so to win this really means a lot to Allensmore. Thanks very much to Klondyke for this award, it’s a pleasure working with you.”

Mortonhall Garden Centre was awarded the Groups Plant Team of the Year: with Byrkley Park Garden Centre receiving Destination Plant Area of the Year award for 2021; with Wilmslow Garden Centre winner of the Plant Area of the Year category.

HTA Director of Policy and Communications to leave

The Horticultural Trades Association has announced that James Clark, Director of Policy and Communications, has decided to leave...

The Horticultural Trades Association has announced that James Clark, Director of Policy and Communications, has decided to leave after almost three years with the organisation.

HTA Chairman, James Barnes, said: “I want to thank James for all his hard work and commitment to the HTA and its members. He has achieved a huge amount – leading the successful campaign to re-open garden centres as the first sector out of the Covid lockdown in May, establishing the HTA’s first ever sustainability function and launching the Association’s new magazine, Inside Horticulture – delivering improved member value. I wish James all the very best for the future”.

James Clark said: “I’m obviously sad to leave the HTA but it is the right time to do so. I’m excited about new opportunities. I’m really pleased to have worked with such a great, award-winning policy and communications team. Together we achieved key policy change, improved the Industry’s media profile and delivered insightful member communications. I leave with respect and gratitude to an industry that does so much that contributes to local communities, improves the environment and brightens peoples lives.”

James has agreed to help with the transition until 15 April 2022. The HTA will commence the recruitment of a successor in due course.
