Evergreen Garden Care has launched its new campaign, ‘Keep Growing’. This campaign takes a much-needed fresh perspective on gardening - that it can be relatable, exciting, and enjoyable, while also being functional.

The new campaign, which focuses on the key brand, Miracle-Gro, has been released in the UK, today, 12th April and is going live across TV, digital and social platforms. It is being released alongside France, Germany and Austria across the month.

Evergreen Garden Care has put a multimillion-pound investment behind the creation of the campaign, in the hope of bringing positive change to the market and leading the way in modernising the industry.

Craig Turner, Head of Group Marketing at Evergreen Garden Care comments: "Gardening adverts and communications are too often stuck in the past, with the whole category missing emotion, modernity and realism. Evergreen Garden Care is on a journey to re-define the future of gardening by making it accessible for all and portray the benefits and positivity gardening can bring."

The Evergreen Garden Care advert depicts a modern and more relatable image of gardening – no more unreal perfect families, unnaturally perfect gardens, sizes that seem artificial and perfectly grown greens lawns. Instead, the advert is purpose lead - championing the doing of gardening and the true successes of it – whether that’s big or small. It highlights the personal wins and shared celebrations that arise from the care of our gardens and green spaces – commemorating the diversity of their people, customers and consumers.

Evergreen Garden Care produces high quality garden care products designed to help people create their own green oasis amid the rush of modern life. Evergreen Garden Care’s mission is to inspire everyone to create and maintain their own green sanctuary, indoors or outdoors, in whatever space they have available. The message is encouraging: keep planting, keep potting, keep going, keep digging, keep nurturing, keep thriving, keep wowing - however you Evergreen, keep growing!

Blue Diamond Garden Centres have opened The Parlour, an Edwardian restaurant in Springfields Shopping Centre, Spalding.

The restaurant is in a stand alone unit that overlooks the Festival Gardens and is connected to the garden centre via a retractable covered walkway which traverses the rear of other shop units delivery areas.

Matthew Upton, previously Head Chef at Blue Diamond East Bridgford, has created the menu and is managing the restaurant working with the team from the Noshery in the garden centre.

The Edwardian style decor, with the added touch of a grand piano, creates sense of calm and occasion with a menu of Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch and Afternoon Tea that is quite different from the garden centre offering.

Hozelock embraces rise in urban gardening with Micro Reel

Over the past couple of years, an increasing number of people have embraced gardening in small spaces, whether it is a courtyard, terrace garden or a balcony, to create a green retreat out of the space they have available...

Over the past couple of years, an increasing number of people have embraced gardening in small spaces, whether it is a courtyard, terrace garden or a balcony, to create a green retreat out of the space they have available.

The challenge that many urban gardeners face is finding the most appropriate garden tools that meet the requirements of smaller outdoor spaces, as often gardening equipment can take up storage that those with a small garden do not have. This presents an opportunity for garden centre retailers to promote the latest innovations in lightweight watering systems, which includes the compact Micro Reel from Hozelock.

The Micro Reel, which has an RRP of £36.99 is ideal for garden centres who want to appeal to both new and urban gardeners, as the product includes a 10m hose and comes with fittings. The Micro Reel weighs a little over 1kg and is an ideal watering solution for urban gardens, balconies, courtyards, and targeted areas of larger gardens.

To offer users flexibility when watering, the Micro Reel features an innovative ‘Click & Go’ design that allows users to simply ‘click’ the connector onto the tap and let the rotating drum unwind the hose whilst walking.

The product has also been designed for versatility and for those gardeners using the Micro Reel for their balcony garden that don’t have an outdoor tap, the hose can be connected to an indoor mixer tap using a Hozelock indoor tap solution such as the Mixer Tap Connector.

Due to its compact nature, the Micro Reel can easily be stored away in small cupboards, on a shelf or in a shed, without taking up too much room.

Sniffe & Likkit takes aim at gifting market

Sniffe & Likkit, the fast-growing British dog grooming and treats firm, has created two new SKUs to maximise gifting opportunities for retailers across all categories.

The new products tap into the fact that, with dogs being treated as an important and equal member of the family, they’re just as likely to be ‘gifted’ as anyone else.

And it’s not just ‘pooch parents’ who are driving these sales. Strong anecdotal evidence from consumer events, as well as feedback from retailers, has highlighted just how many of Sniffe & Likkit’s sales were being generated by friends and family of dog owners.

So, with Mother’s Day and the Easter holidays set to trigger thousands of family and friend visits,  the firm felt it the perfect moment to create new gifting options. Easter is also the UK's second biggest present giving occasion, meaning the opportunity for these products is significant.

The 'Inn The Dog House' (RRP £17.00) gift set features four of Sniffe & Likkit's signature products - including ‘Fragrant Fur Coat’ shampoo, a pack of ‘Wippets’ wipes, ‘Give a Dog a Cologne’ fragrance spray and a scented hanging sachet, ‘Scent Something Nice’.

The second gift item is the 'Paw Kit Treat Tin' (RRP £10.00), a sturdy metal tin full of all-natural tasty snacks, made from a natural and healthy balance of sweet potato and chicken liver. Treats are currently a major driver in the UK dog food market and a significant contributor to value, as they typically command a price premium over everyday meals.

The two products further boost the firm's gifting line-up - joining its ‘Scent-a-Message’ scented greetings cards, ‘Home Barking Kit’, ‘Woofpack’ travel bag and Christmas-themed stocking and 'Mutt Crackers’.

Lee Sargent, Co-Founder, said: “People love bringing gifts for a dog, especially if they think it’ll ‘miss out’ on a celebration or gifting occasion! It’s all part of the lovely humanisation of dogs and a recognition of just how important they are to a home. Gifting’s growing nicely for us, so expect further additions.”

All Sniffe & Likkit items are available from Pedigree Wholesale and direct from sniffeandlikkit.com

Mother’s Day record helps total sales to 15% up

After Mother’s Day set a new record March week for volume sales, cooler weather at the start and end of the month meant the GTN Bestsellers volume sales index closed 18% down for March, but year to date up 15% on 2021 and 23% up on 2019...

After Mother’s Day set a new record March week for volume sales, cooler weather at the start and end of the month meant the GTN Bestsellers volume sales index closed 18% down for March.

But as that compares with a March in 2021 when we had just come out of Lockdown #3 the real comparison should be year to date sales for the first quarter which are 15% up on 2021 and 23% up on 2019.

For some, that may not mean increased turnover as we’re not seeing the same volumes of early garden furniture sales this year. However, conversations with several garden centres this week reveal they are more than happy with the rate of furniture sales at the moment.

GTN Bestsellers Top 50 sales volumes compared to the same week in 2021: week 13.

  • Garden Products Top 50 – down 33%
  • Growing Media Top 50 – down 36%
  • Veg 2 Gro Top 50 – down 26%
  • Wild Bird & Wildlife Care Top 50 – down 16%

Tomatoes lead the way post the Primula boom

Plant sales so far this year have matched 2021 levels, despite the poor weather weeks of March which led to the month being 23% down on 2021.

Plant sales so far this year have matched 2021 levels, despite the poor weather weeks of March which led to the month being 23% down on 2021.

And, most importantly, volume sales year to date are up 19% on 2019 levels and for the the month of March they were up by 23% on 2019 levels.

The weather will undoubtedly have a say on April’s plant sales, but given that stocks appear to be high in planterias, with good supply levels coming through, including from Europe, we could be set for a great season of plant sales and gardening activity.

  • As with last year Tomato plants moved to the Top of the GTN plants chart as Primula sales drop off post Mother’s Day.
  • Lobelia were the highest chart climber, up 14 places to No 24.
  • Dicentra were the highest Top 50 Plants re-entry, back in at No 32.

Last weekend (Sunday April 3rd) 11 runners tackled the London Landmarks Half Marathon all in the name of Greenfingers, together raising over £11,000 for the children’s hospice garden charity.

Running 13.1 miles through London, in this most unusual race route which takes in some of the capital’s most grand, quirky and hidden history were Katie Foster, Debbie Watson, Brian Kinsella, Julia Aliseyko and Karl Kahofer from Evergreen Garden Care, Amy Stubbs and David Lazenby from British Garden Centres, AMES UK’s Heidi Towse, Matthew Rowlandson, Kate Ebbens from Capi Europe and Liz Pilny, a funeral celebrant who has recently seen first-hand how a Greenfingers garden can make an important difference to a grieving family.

The race took place on a sunny but rather chilly April morning but thankfully there was a floral cheer team on hand to support the runners as they clocked up the miles. Lending words of encouragement were Greenfingers’ very own Linda Petrons and Sue Allen, as well as Boyd and Sally Douglas Davies, Mike Vasey, Evergreen Garden Care’s Mark Portman, Andy Williams and Claire Pearce, plus Charles and Phillippa Stubbs from British Garden Centres, plus the wider families of those running including the smallest of all, toddler Harry who cheered on the Evergreen team in earnest.

Celebrating their incredible efforts for the Greenfingers Charity, the runners and cheer team enjoyed celebrating together at an Evergreen Garden Care sponsored drinks reception after the run.

Karl Kahofer, CEO at Evergreen Garden Care said after the race: “What a day! The weather held out, the route was scenic, and we had fantastic support along the route from our lovely cheering group!  Most importantly, we were running for a good cause. I’m proud to be involved!”

Greenfingers Director of Fundraising & Communications, Linda Petrons added: “What a fantastic day! The atmosphere throughout the day was incredible and I cannot thank the runners enough for their endless support. You are all amazing and the fundraising total is just staggering. Thanks also must go to all those took the time to support all the runners – it was so heartening to see everyone come together for this special day.”

Linda’s sentiments were echoed by British Garden Centre’s Phillippa Stubbs who said: “We had such an awesome day and are so proud of Amy and David’s effort, from all the training they undertook, to everything they needed to complete the race on the day. We couldn’t believe what a great family day out it was, made even more special by the fact it was raising much needed funds for such a great cause. It really was a memorable day.”

Following the success of this year’s event, Greenfingers has confirmed that it will once again be putting together a team for the London Landmarks Half Marathon in 2023. Taking place on April 2nd, 2023, interested parties are urged to get in touch with Greenfingers now to secure their place.

Launched in 2014, the London Landmarks Half Marathon has been set up to shine a spotlight on not just London’s iconic landmarks, but also its quirky hidden gems. The route - which starts at Nelson’s Column before taking in such landmarks as London Eye, Big Ben, Downing Street, the world’s smallest police station, the largest grasshopper, Guy Fawkes house and so much more – travels through the heart of Westminster and London City, whilst celebrating the rich heritage and culture that shapes our nation’s capital.

To keep runners motivated, the route is adorned with musical performances, DJs, dancers and themed cheer stations, including a floral themed Greenfingers one!  All roads will remain closed for the duration of the race.

Hannah at Perrywood wins national book award

Hannah Powell’s memoir The Cactus Surgeon has been awarded the winner of the Selfies UK Book Awards in the memoir/autobiography category. These national awards recognise the UK’s best indie-published books.

Hannah is Communications & HR Dircector at Perrywood Garden Centres, and her debut book was written in lock down after joining the Michael Heppell 'Write That Book' Masterclass. Hannah followed Micahel on social media after hearing him speak at two GCA conferences. Her memoir outlines her relationship with nature and the amazing way it has positively influenced her health and wellbeing, as well as telling stories about growing up living next to a garden centre.

There were just eight titles shortlisted, and winners were announced on April 5 at the London Book Fair. The judges praised "the simplicity of [the] storytelling", a cover that was "perfect for this kind of writing", and "integrated photos enhancing the narrative and the book's sense of renewal". Judges: Alan Staton (Booksellers Association), Alan Samson (ex-Weidenfeld), Ben Hughes (IngramSpark).

BookBrunch managing director Jo Henry said: "We have been thoroughly impressed by the wide range of topics covered and the professionalism of the publishing expertise shown by the 25 authors on this year's shortlists. The powerful stories told in the memoir/autobiography category made immersive reading for our judges, while the winner is very much a book for our time.

Hannah says: “As a new, and self-published, author it can be quite challenging to gain interest and recognition. This award is just wonderful. It’s given me a huge confidence boost, and a desire to keep writing.”

Hannah received a cash prize of £750, which she is donating to charity FND Hope UK. They support those suffering from FND. She will also receive a profile in BookBrunch, a winner’s certificate and other publishing opportunities and packages from sponsors and supporters.

The Cactus Surgeon outlines how, when living in London, Hannah suffered burnout and was diagnosed with a functional neurological disorder. With no information available to help her, she found her own way to get better.

Growing up living on the same site as Perrywood Garden Centre in Tiptree her childhood was full of nature and plants. This was in stark contrast to the concrete of London, where she became unwell. In searching for the answers to her illness, she wonders whether being torn from her pot and replanted in a more hostile environment was the reason her body started to malfunction.

After seeking out alternative therapies, and moving to the countryside of North Essex, her ‘green recovery’ continued. It’s a book of mindful moments, savouring the small wonders of nature.

The Cactus Surgeon is available at www.thecactussurgeon.com, via any independent or chain book shop (just ask them to order it in) plus via other online retailers including Amazon.

The Blue Diamond Group of Garden Centres are donating 100% of the sale proceeds for the ‘Peace’ rose to the Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal.

Since the start of this campaign, on the 4th of March 2022, over 600 “Peace" roses have been sold to date, amounting to more than £10,000 in donations which will be paid to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this campaign.

The Group have approximately 2200 Peace roses, worth £43, 978 which have been grown on their nursery, to sell. Peace roses will continue to be sold in all Blue Diamond Garden Centres until the stock of these roses has sold out and the full retail value is donated to the appeal.

The ‘Peace’ rose is available in all Blue Diamond Garden Centres and online at www.fryersroses.co.uk, whilst stocks last.

And that is not all…

Around 8 aircraft departed this weekend from Southend Airport full of medical supplies.

The equipment consists of surgical supplies, ventilator equipment, oxygen equipment, ECG machines and much more.

After loading at Southend, the team will fly to Poznan in Poland to stay overnight. On Saturday morning each aircraft has an allotted slot to arrive at Lublin Airport which is approximately 35 miles from the Ukraine border. The equipment will be handed over to the Ministry of Health for onward distribution.

This has been organised by the husband of one of our members of staff who is a Doctor, and Blue Diamond are supporting the effort by paying £3,500 for the costs of fuelling the planes.

HTA welcomes EFRA Committee report findings on workforce shortages

The Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs Committee has published its Labour shortages in the food and farming sector report highlighting growing concerns for the significant number of roles going unfilled in the farming industry...

The Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs Committee has published its Labour shortages in the food and farming sector report highlighting growing concerns for the significant number of roles going unfilled in the farming industry.

The Committee states: “The Government needs to build on its welcome expansion of the Seasonal Workers Pilot scheme to the ornamentals sector and: increase the number of visas available by 10,000 this year; make the scheme permanent; and commit to announcing visa numbers in future on a rolling five-year basis.”

This is a position endorsed by the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), who have been campaigning to increase the Seasonal Workers Scheme for tree and plant growers in the UK, who face a similar labour shortage.

The HTA’s Public Affairs and Policy Manager David Lydiat commented:
“It has been clear to those in the Horticulture industry for some time that workforce shortages have been significant due to the impact of UK leaving the EU and the pandemic. Britain’s tree and plant growers require an immediate 3,000 increase in full-time workers. Although we welcome being recently included in the Seasonal Workers Scheme, the current regulation means that our members are competing directly with edible horticulture in the same restricted pool of labour. We need the Government to realise that the scheme needs to be extended immediately with both ornamental horticulture and farming being allocated the numbers required to meet the demand of both sectors. This is in the interests of the UK economy, environment and food security.”

The Ornamental Horticulture and Gardening industry is essential to underpinning much of the Government’s own 25-year environmental plan. There is a risk that supplying the demand for homegrown trees and plants goes unfulfilled due to labour shortages.

Team Zest runs Manchester Marathon in support of BHF

A team of 18 employees and members of its key Polish product supply partner from Zest, the garden furniture, grow your own and decorative garden structure specialist ran the Manchester Marathon on 3rd April in support of the company’s 2022 chosen charity, the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

Not only did the group successfully raise funds towards their £10k goal via sponsorship, but one member of the team, Zest Finance Director, Andrew Baker set a personal best of 03:10:34.  Woodworks Garden Centre manager, Iwan Gwyn, running his first ever marathon completed the course in 03.20.23.  The runners were also joined by a mystery guest at the start line.  Steve Morgan, Zest’s Managing Director ran the marathon as the British Heart Foundation mascot, Mr Hearty, collecting over £500 in buckets along the way – mainly in small change!

Experienced marathon runners such as Zest key account manager, Paul Haynes and Andrew Baker ran alongside marathon novices such as Zest senior digital marketing executive, Thomas Jones as well as P&A Group colleagues from the Woodworks Garden Centre, central services, the Zest warehouse and distribution centre and three members of management from Zest’s key Polish supply partner.

Team member, Denise Matthews from Zest’s finance department said “I’m so pleased to have completed the Manchester Marathon.  It was a great atmosphere and the crowds definitely helped to keep spirits high during the 26.2 mile challenge!  It was great to see the team in action – and although we’ll be aching tomorrow – I’m so proud of everyone raising so much money for a great cause.”

Steve Morgan added: “How could I not join in the fun? When I saw how many members of staff had signed up to take part, I knew I had to get involved too!  It was a fantastic day, and we all feel great to have done it for such a worthwhile charity!  I feel very proud of Zest and the fact that so many of us took part.  Some were absolute beginners and others chasing personal best times – all in the name of fundraising for BHF. So many people stopped me to donate along the route, the buckets just got heavier!”

Andrew Baker commented, “The best part about it was watching the team come over the finish line – I’m proud of their dedication and determination.” Iwan Gwyn added, “The training was all worthwhile – and I really enjoyed being part of the team.”

Over the last 11 years, Zest and the P&A Group have raised over £100,000 for a variety of charities including Macmillan Cancer Support, Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith Children’s Hospices, Cancer Research UK, Action for Children, Alzheimer’s Society, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and Meningitis Now.

The British Heart Foundation helps and supports 340,000 people living with heart and circulatory diseases in Wales alone.  One in four people in the UK and one in three globally die from heart and circulatory diseases. That is why the British Heart Foundation funds world-leading research into their causes, prevention, treatment, and cure.  Advances from the charity’s research have saved and improved millions of lives, but heart diseases, stroke, vascular dementia and their risk factors such as diabetes still cause heartbreak on every street. With the public’s support, British Heart Foundation funding will drive new discoveries to end that heartbreak.

Cian takes root & grows into senior role at Wyevale Nurseries

Cian Lynch has this month been appointed as Senior Business Support Administrator for the Transplant team at Wyevale Nurseries in Herefordshire...

Cian Lynch has this month been appointed as Senior Business Support Administrator for the Transplant team at Wyevale Nurseries in Herefordshire.

The 25-year-old has passed through the family-run company’s inhouse apprenticeship programme, completing it in 2021, and has most recently worked with the organisation as an Amenity Sales Executive.

Head of Business Support, Carol Dickinson explains: “We’re very pleased to announce that Cian has accepted the role of Senior Business Support Administrator at our Transplant Division site office. It’s wonderful to see our own homegrown talent developing and being promoted within the business. Investing in the younger generation like this and sharing our knowledge will ensure the industry continues to thrive. We’re very much looking forward to the fresh ideas, energy and enthusiasm Cian will bring to his new role.

“Alongside his day-to-day duties, he will also be spending time with Adrian Cituran, Transplants Production Manager, to understand the production operations and site management. The team and I would like to congratulate Cian and we look forward to working together.”

Cian’s new role includes covering Wyevale Nurseries’ Transplant division’s office administration and operational tasks including stock control, pick management and health and safety.

He said: “I’m delighted with my new role. I thoroughly enjoy working here at Wyevale Nurseries and I’m looking forward to getting stuck in. I’ve been in the industry for four years and I’m very passionate about horticulture. I started out as a Level three Crop Technician Apprentice and had very little knowledge. Now I feel much more confident and have gained lots of skills and experience.

“At the start of my apprenticeship, I rotated around each department and learnt a lot. During this time, I was taught how to prune and maintain crops, irrigate effectively, and apply pesticides safely, and much more. I also studied at Pershore to cover the academic side of things too.”

As well as having industry recognised qualifications taken as part of his apprenticeship, in his spare time, Cian, who is a member of Young People in Horticulture Association, has taken extra-curricular online courses in botany, soils and hydroponics to broaden his knowledge.

“I am also an environmentally friendly person, so my aim is to help reduce the industry’s carbon footprint and Wyevale Nurseries’ too. I would like to achieve this by helping the team continue with its work mitigating pollution, wastage and increasing recycling.

“I am very much looking forward to working with Adrian. I think it’s really important for all generations to have a symbiotic relationship, as this is key to the future of horticulture. I know I have lots to learn from the Transplant team.”

Wyevale Nurseries’ product selection is envied across the industry and the talented team regularly introduces new, award-winning plant varieties.

Its main business is to supply garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners with a comprehensive array of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants.

Made from 3.5kgs of recycled ropes and nets from the maritime industry, fully recyclable, and having helped to recycle 240,000kgs (240 tonnes) of ocean plastic to-date, it may come as no surprise that the ground-breaking DuraOcean® from LifestyleGarden®, and created in partnership with the Eden Project, has scooped a coveted finalist status at the forthcoming Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards (B&LLA) on 24th April.

These awards celebrate excellence in product innovation, brand licensing management as well as retail execution within the ever-evolving brand and lifestyle licensing arena. The awards roster focuses on everything from fashion and beverages, to apparel, gifts and everything in between. This year LifestyleGarden® entered the Sustainability Brand Licensed Range Award, for which it has been shortlisted. The judges have been impressed with DuraOcean®’s incredible commitment to playing a part in helping to reduce the ocean pollution crisis, which is currently seeing over eight million pieces of extremely harmful plastic reach our oceans every single day, killing huge swathes of the fish and creatures that call the ocean home.

Paul Cohen, Commercial Director at LifestyleGarden® said; “It’s an honour to be featured on this year’s B&LLA finalist list, alongside a wide range of other incredible suppliers. Being recognised for our unrelenting stance on sustainability and the celebration of bringing our vision to fruition with the DuraOcean® collection is an important milestone for us, especially when you consider the calibre of the judging panel. We look forward to seeing who wins on April 24th and would like to thank the whole team at the Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards for including us this year.”

The DuraOcean® story

First launched to the retail market at the trade exhibition, SOLEX, in 2019, DuraOcean® was met with critical acclaim and named winner of the Best New Product Award at the outdoor living show. It also scooped Bronze in the Gardiente Outdoor Living Awards the same year and was shortlisted for the Recycled Product of the Year at the 2020 MRW National Recycling Awards.

The reason for this flurry of excited attention was DuraOcean’s® status as the world’s first commercially viable outdoor chair made from recycled ocean plastics, which heralded a new shift towards sustainable outdoor living that is also financially accessible for the mass consumer market. The chair was greeted with immense enthusiasm by retailers and consumers alike and soon became a hero product of the flagship Eden Project in Cornwall, which utilises DuraOcean® furniture in its own catering areas and retails the same chairs through its shop and website, and with whom LifestyleGarden® has an incredibly close working partnership.

DuraOcean® represents the culmination of a global ocean plastic recovery project and the first mass-market piece of furniture crafted from recycled marine waste, boasting a sophisticated design and enviable eco-friendly credentials. Design-led and manufactured to the highest possible specifications, these state-of-the-art chairs soon became sought after contemporary classics which are proving they will stand the test of time.

The DuraOcean® collection is available in dark green, black and the new-for-2022 mint green colour. Configurations include bistro and two-seater sets, plus four- and six-seater dining tables.

Two weeks after the opening of the registration of exhibitors for the PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt trade fair a quarter of the available floor space has already been sold. Exhibitors have a choice of three presentation concepts: Basic, Comfort and Premium, of which the Comfort version is proving particularly popular.

Pieter Heemskerk, responsible for sales, has a lot of contact with prospective exhibitors. Examples of the various presentation concepts were shown at GROEN-Direkt’s Spring Days to give visitors an impression of the options available to them. “I spoke to many company representatives there, and they were all very enthusiastic about the options. The Basic concept offers fair participants the possibility of presenting their plants on CC trolleys. The greater presentation options of Comfort stands are interesting for exhibitors of both live and non-live products. What I find particularly attractive about these Comfort stands is that they can be customised at fairly low costs, and that they can be used several times. But the Premium option, enabling exhibitors to design their own stands, certainly also meets specific company requirements,” says Pieter.

To register

To register for participation in the fair, simply go to the website plantariumgroendirekt.nl/exposanten. Exhibitors who register by 15 May 2022 at the latest will enjoy a special discount on the square metre price.

About PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt

PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt will take place on the 24th and 25th of August 2022. The fair will be held in and around the GROEN-Direkt hall at the International Trade Centre in Hazerswoude/Boskoop, the Netherlands. More information can be found on the website plantariumgroendirekt.nl/.

Large turnout for first seasonal fair in two years

Due to COVID-19, GROEN-Direkt could not organize seasonal fairs in the desired form with exhibitors for two years. On Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 April, this was broken and the first major seasonal fair with exhibitors took place: the GROEN-Direkt Spring Days.

Partly due to the extremely bad weather, the organization had no idea if there would be many visitors. But the expectations were far exceeded! The Spring Days were well attended.

The enormous range of 4,000 unique sample lots, many beautiful large solitary plants, an extensive concept presentation and more than twenty suppliers on the Product Promotion Square ensured that visitors were positively surprised and, as always, came in large numbers to the fair.

Trade show visitors took their time for both the enormous assortment and the well-stocked growers' square.

Sales were good, but the uncertainty in the trade was reflected in many conversations on the show floor. The consumer is cautious and the purchasing follows suit. All in all, the fair organization is satisfied and there was a pleasant bustle at the GROEN-Direkt Spring Days!

Did you not have the opportunity to visit the Spring Days? Then come to the GROEN-Direkt High Seasons Days on Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 May.

Leading woodcare brand, Ronseal, has announced the launch of Ultimate Fence Life Concentrate, its most ground-breaking fence care product yet.

Available in all major stockists from today (Monday 4th April), Ultimate Fence Life Concentrate marks a step-change in DIY as the first product of its kind to come in an eco-friendly pouch with pioneering ‘just add water’ functionality for all weather fence protection.

Thanks to the innovative concentrated formula, each 950ml pouch makes five litres of paint once diluted. Ultimate Fence Life Concentrate comes in six versatile colours and is easy to mix and use at home.

The result is Ronseal’s longest lasting formula, providing unbeatable protection in all weather conditions for any type of outdoor wood.

With 90% less packaging than a standard 5L tub, Ultimate Fence Life Concentrate is also an important product for the future of sustainability and waste reduction in DIY.

To reflect the packaging change, Ronseal has changed its famous slogan on the product to ‘Does exactly what it says on the tin pouch’.

Ronseal is also supporting the launch with new POS in major stockists, a ‘concentrated billboard’ stunt, and a digital campaign that includes lots of new and inspiring social content around the product.

Jane Ryder, Vice President & General Manager at Sherwin Williams, Ronseal’s parent company, said: “This amazing ‘just add water’ formula marks a revolution in DIY and we can’t wait for people to try it at home – we love seeing the end-results of our products.

“We’re constantly looking for ways to do things better and improve the overall user experience. We listen to our customers to understand what’s important to them and hope this product will pave the way for more sustainable DIY’ing.

“With the new Ultimate Fence Life Concentrate we’ve been able to offer a great product, which provides excellent coverage and value, yet with minimum fuss or waste.”

Product benefits:

  • Our greatest ever and longest lasting formula: Ultimate Fence Life Concentrate gives our longest lasting protection yet. Its unique formula provides advanced water beading technology and protects in all weather conditions.
  • Eco-friendly: The concentrated formula significantly decreases the amount of water and the weight of the product being transported – therefore reducing carbon emissions. It also has 90% less packaging which is fully recyclable after use.
  • Easy-to-use: To use, first pour the product into a bucket, then use the pouch to measure out and add water, stir the formula to create an even consistency and apply to fences, sheds or exterior wood with either a brush or sprayer. Each pouch makes enough product for the equivalent of three fence panels.

Launch details:

Ultimate Fence Life Concentrate is available nationwide in a range six colours, including: Dark Oak, Medium Oak, Charcoal Grey, Red Cedar, Forest Green and Sage. RRP £17.00/€19.99.

YPHA member to open plant boutique in Ross-on-Wye

Former AV & Trials Coordinator for Allensmore Nurseries and member of the YPHA, Stacey Gibson will be opening her gardening shop, Dor’s Garden, on the 15th April...

An experienced garden designer and horticulturalist will be bringing a splash of springtime colour to Ross-on-Wye this April by branching out and re-opening an empty shop on Ross on Wye’s High Street.

Former AV & Trials Coordinator for Allensmore Nurseries and member of the YPHA, Stacey Gibson, has acquired the lease of 6 High Street and will be opening her gardening shop, Dor’s Garden, on the 15th April.

"I’ve always had a passion for plants and gardening," says Stacey, "so opening a gardening shop, named after my Nan, fulfils a life-long ambition.

"I’m so excited to opening my new shop in Ross to offer the town’s people some gorgeous plants and gardening goods, and to share my passion and my belief in all the benefits that gardening can bring to a person."

Stacey’s vision has been supported by Herefordshire Council in the form of a Revive to Thrive grant to help towards the costs of establishing the shop, and by Marches Growth Hub Herefordshire which has provided training in business skills and access to a business mentor.

‘I’m very grateful for all the support I’ve received" comments Stacey, "it’s great to know that these schemes exist to help people like me start new business ventures."

Stacey, born and raised locally, has worked as a horticulturalist and a garden designer for 12 years, after studying Professional Garden Design  at Cotswold Gardening School. She is an RHS Silver Medal Award winner.

6 High Street Ross was formerly a solicitors office, but has been vacant for a number of years.

Dor’s Garden will open it’s doors on 15th April.

The David Colegrave Foundation are delighted to announce this years scholarship awards have been made, totalling over £25,000 worth of support for 11 students. The various awards help fund a wide range of students from 9 different colleges and universities throughout the UK.

The first to be announced are the winners of the new scholarship sponsored by the Channel Islands based, Blue Diamond garden and living centres group which attracted a large number of applications.

Speaking about this scholarship, chairman of The David Colegrave Foundation, Jeff Colegrave, commented: ‘It is wonderful to have support for the Foundation from a major company within the horticultural industry. This financial commitment has enabled us to help even more students than we have ever been able to previously. 7 students have been awarded bursaries under this scheme and a total of £10,500 was shared amongst these students to help support them in their studies. Horticultural students are the future of our industry and it is so important that we do what we can to encourage them as they make their way into the industry."

All the students supported by the Blue Diamond Scholarships demonstrated their passion for horticulture and their commitment to building a career within the industry. Whether it is in the field of research, propagation, growing, design or plant retailing, Blue Diamond’s support for students through The David Colegrave Foundation, is helping to grow the next generation of horticulturalists.

Blue Diamond's MD Alan Roper said: "At Blue Diamond we are in the lucky position where we can help students grow their own career, and so it gives me great pride to give this opportunity to these students and share the passion we have for plants."

Winners of the 2022 Blue Diamond Scholarships included:

  • Anna Ciborowska and Edward Charlton both studying at Edinburgh Royal Botanic Gardens;
  • Katie Pardoe, studying at The Eden Project;
  • Jessica Mears, studying at Sparsholt College:
  • Victoria Adams, studying at Writtle University College;
  • Thomas McDonald, studying at Pershore College;
  • Ben Sayers, studying at Greenmount College.

All the students were absolutely delighted with their awards with the money being used to fund essential equipment like laptops, to pay course fees or to travel to visit nurseries in the UK or abroad. One student commented: "I am overjoyed and grateful to have been awarded a Blue Diamond Scholarship. It will reduce financial stress and allow me to focus on my studies. Thank you!"

Another said: "Receiving the Blue Diamond Scholarship from the David Colegrave Foundation has given me such confidence and has opened up the possibility to pursue additional training that I know will help me in my future career."

The full list of the Blue Diamond Scholarship winners are:

Anna Ciborowska: currently studying for an HND in Horticulture with Plantsmanship at The Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh in conjunction with SRUC.

Anna has always loved plants but it wasn’t until recently that she was able to follow her passion and retrain as a horticulturist.

Of her horticultural studies, Anna said: "I knew I had made the right decision from the very first day and the two years since have been full of fascinating plant facts, amazing people and days outdoors getting my hands dirty. After my studies I hope to work at a botanic or heritage garden - but who knows where the future will take me! As long as there are plants in it, I’ll be happy."

Katie Pardoe: currently studying for an HND and BSc Garden Landscape design qualifications at the Eden Project.

With professional aims to educate and reframe the perception of beauty in gardens through ecological designs, Katie seeks to bring the biophilic benefits of nature into everyday spaces with sustainability, ecology and evolution in mind.

Of the award, Katie said "I am delighted to have been awarded a scholarship by the David Colegrave Foundation, and I greatly appreciate the opportunities this will provide - both during my studies and in the future."

Jessica Mears: currently studying for a Level 3 Advanced Extended Technical Diploma in Horticulture at Sparsholt College.

"Receiving the Blue Diamond Scholarship from the David Colegrave Foundation has given me such confidence and had opened up the possibility to pursue additional training that I know will help me in my future career," says Jessica.

"I hope to work in a plant nursery after I finish at college. Seeing plants grow is possibly one of the most joyful things I can think of. Through college we have visited so many nurseries and I have loved all of them. I am particularly interested in propagation and potentially plant breeding," she added.

Victoria Adams: Currently studying for a BSc in Horticulture at Writtle University.

Having worked in various horticultural placements including Allensmore Nurseries and Monkton Elm Garden Centre, Victoria is now studying at Writtle. She has developed a particular interest in propagation and has identified that there is a shortage of skilled workforce within the sector. She hopes that the award of this bursary will enable her to visit relevant nurseries in the UK and possibly abroad to extend her knowledge in this field.

Thomas McDonald: Currently doing an apprenticeship at Pershore College training as a crop technician.

After graduating from the University of Reading in 2019 with a degree in International studies, Thomas realised his real passion was for horticulture. Having worked through the summer breaks with New Leaf Plants and he was fortunate to able to obtain employment with them after he graduated. Combining this work with a two year apprenticeship at Pershore Horticultural College he is now training to be a crop technician. He is delighted to have been awarded a scholarship from David Colegrave Foundation which will enable him purchase a new laptop. "My existing machine has seen me right through GCSE  and A levels at school and my University degree, but is no longer fit for purpose. Having the money to buy a new laptop will really help me with my studies and make such a difference to me."

Ben Sayers: currently studying for a foundation degree in Horticulture at Cafre Greenmount College in Northern Ireland.

Having had an interest in growing form an early age, Ben has turned his passion into his career and is already running his own small commercial nursery whilst studying for a foundation degree in Horticulture. "Winning this award will help to ease the financial burden of paying for my degree," said Ben. "I am completely committed to developing a career in horticulture and am so grateful that this scholarship will help to support me in pursuing my ambitions."

Edward Charlton: currently studying for an HND in Horticulture with Plantsmanship at The Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.

Currently in his last year of a Horticulture and Plantsmanship degree at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow, Edward has been able to pursue his interest in the cultivation of tropical and arid plants. His ultimate aim is to aid in the conservation of endangered plants through the development of knowledge of propagation techniques, such as tissue culture and seed germination.

"The funding received from the David Colegrave Foundation will help with living costs during my last year of degree and also provide me with funds to continue optimising my tissue culture technique with various plant species," said Edward. "Thank you so much for supporting me in my horticultural career, I feel honoured to receive support from the David Colegrave Foundation."

No shortage of Veg-2-Gro sales

It’s a very healthy position for Veg 2 Gro sales as we move out of March into the main sales period.  Whilst sales for the month were down by 14% on March 2021, year to date they are equal to 2021 overall and most significantly 52% ahead of 2019...

It’s a very healthy position for Veg 2 Gro sales as we move out of March into the main sales period.  Whilst sales for the month were down by 14% on March 2021, year to date they are equal to 2021 overall and most significantly 52% ahead of 2019.

It would appear there is a thirst to grow as much veg at home as possible this year given the economic situation and fears of food shortages.

  • Cucumber Female Femspot 9cm soars to No 1 in the GTN Chart after being New Entry last week.
  • Cucumber Mini Petita 9cm is the highest chart climber, moving up to No 4.
  • Tomato Gardeners Delight 8cm continues to be the most popular Tomato plant to grow at home.

Pershore students to create Peter Seabrook tribute garden at BBC Gardeners World Live

Thanks to industry support following the theft of tools and gardening equipment last year, students from Pershore College are now working with the team from Gardeners World Live to bring a tribute to Peter Seabrook to reality...

When the horticultural unit at Pershore High School in Worcestershire got broken into in April last year, and all the students tools and equipment stolen, the garden industry, as it does so well, rallied round and came to their aid.

Companies including Bransford Webbs, Blue Diamond, Stewart Plastics, Stax, Mr Fothergills Seeds, St Peters Garden Centre and Westland Horticulture were on it in a flash says Head of Horticulture Anne Watson. “All the companies gave us products and many donated cash too which made it much quicker for us to get up and running again, providing for the students who were just coming back into school after lock down.”

This year Westland and Hayloft Plants have continued to support the school and its students in their work. Westland keep the school supplied with compost and other sundry items including fertilisers as the students tend their plots.

It was those plots that inspired Peter Seabrook, who was working with the school to grow Poppins Chrysanths for the display for last autumns Chelsea Flower Show, to incorporate a ‘school allotment’ into the display he was planning to bring to the 2022 gardening shows. Pershore High School, working with Val Christman and Neil Gow who worked with Peter on show displays over many years, are working with the team from Gardeners World Live to bring that to reality as a tribute to Peter and his support for the garden industry.

Anne continued: “Peter was my garden guru from a young age when I first became interested in gardening as a child, so the chance to work with Peter when I became the schools horticultural teacher was amazing. The time and interest he put into my students was incredible. So to be working on this project in commemoration of his life  is such an opportunity for the students and with the support Westland are giving us with their supplies of products makes it all possible for us as we do have to be entirely self funded as a horticultural unit, so thank you Westland and the gardening industry for all your help”.

Growing Media up by 26% on 2019 so far this year

While total growing media top sales volumes were down on 2021 levels for March by a third, year to date Growing Media volumes continue their upward growth, increasing by 12% on 2021 levels and 26% on 2019 levels.

While total growing media top sales volumes were down on 2021 levels for March by a third, year to date Growing Media volumes continue their upward growth, increasing by 12% on 2021 levels and 26% on 2019 levels.  When the weather is good, there is a lot of growing activity going on.

Given the peat consulation that is still in progress, the Top 3 volume lines in the GTN chart are all peat based, albeit at No 3 is the 50:50 version of Jacks Magic.  The volume of the Top 3 lines equates to 25% of the total Top 50 Growing Media lines sales volumes.

  • Westland New Horizon All Plant Compost 50 litres is then at No 5
  • Evergreen Garden Care Miracle-Gro Peat Free All Purpose 40 litres is at No 6.
  • Bloomin Amazing 3 in 1 Soil Improver 50 litres is the highest chart climber in a week when volumes dropped as a whole, moving up 14 places to No 21.

Young Designers tackle the big issues at RHS Flower Show Tatton Park 2022

The next generation of garden designers draw inspiration from the tumultuous events of recent years in a bid to claim the coveted RHS Young Designer of the Year at RHS Flower Show Tatton Park 2022...

The next generation of garden designers draw inspiration from the tumultuous events of recent years in a bid to claim the coveted RHS Young Designer of the Year at RHS Flower Show Tatton Park 2022.

Rising sea levels, long Covid, and carbon footprinting are just some of the topics tackled in the ambitious designs of the five finalists, all aged under 28.

Will Scholey (26, London) has designed the ideal work from home environment to promote a carbon negative commute to work. Naturalistic planting leads to a modern garden office and uses sustainable hard landscaping to help reduce the user’s carbon footprint.

Looking to provide healing and calming sanctuaries in hospitals, Rachel Platt (25, Buckinghamshire) and Alex Pettit (26, Northamptonshire) have designed spaces to aid recovery and stress relief for patients and NHS staff. Rachel’s ‘The Covid Recovery Garden’ features air purifying and remedial plants to create a restorative garden for those suffering from long Covid whilst Alex uses a protective shelter and reflecting pool in ‘Slow Down, Breathe Deep’ to provide a relaxation space for NHS staff to take a break in.

Taking inspiration from her Anglo-Guyanese roots, Emma Tipping (28, London), uses a vibrant planting selection to create a fun atmosphere whilst also reflecting on rising sea levels, an issue affecting both the Guyanese and British coastlines.

Also taking inspiration from abroad, Tom Clarke (22, North Yorkshire) uses palms and cypress trees to evoke the spirit of Morocco and create a peaceful sanctuary in ‘Paradise Found.’

Lex Falleyn, show manager for RHS Tatton Park, said: “We are really excited to see the ideas of these five young designers come to life at RHS Tatton Park this year. It’s impressive to see how they have used their garden designs to highlight global issues affecting people and the planet. We hope they inspire the next generation of gardeners to come and see the show and to try horticulture as a hobby or a future career.”

RHS Flower Show Tatton Park runs from 20-24 July and tickets can be purchased at www.rhs.org.uk/tatton

Visitor registration now open for Casual Dining, Commercial Kitchen & lunch!

The three major trade shows co-located for the first-time last September in a triumphant return to face-to-face events...

Casual Dining – the definitive trade event for the restaurant, pub and bar sector; Commercial Kitchen – the essential event for executive chefs and leading decision makers from all types of professional kitchens, and lunch! – the definitive event for the café, coffee shop & food-to-go sector has announced that registration is now open for the 2022 editions, which return to ExCeL London on 14-15 September.

The three major trade shows co-located for the first-time last September in a triumphant return to face-to-face events.  Successful in their own right, visitors and exhibitors reported that having the trade shows co-located “made sense” – and so event organisers, Diversified Communications, are urging buyers, retailers, wholesalers, chefs, and foodservice professionals to register for their 2022 trade ticket.

Chris Brazier, Group Event Director for the shows commented "We're delighted to open free visitor registration for what is looking like our best shows yet. We've seen record stand bookings, which is a great sign for the industry. Innovation is well and truly back on the menu with so many suppliers launching new products for the thousands of decision makers from multi-site and independent operators that attend. We're also excited to announce our unmissable free seminar programme in the coming months. A huge thanks to the exhibitors and supporters and to all the trade visitors that can register free from today. We look forward to seeing you at your industry shows on 14 & 15 September at ExCeL London."

Casual Dining, Commercial Kitchen and lunch! have garnered a loyal following over the years from big names in the business, including senior professionals from Caffè Nero, Center Parcs, Compass Group, Co-op, Crussh, Dishoom, Five Guys, Greggs, Greene King, Oakman Group, Fuller's, Burger King, Heathrow Airport, Hilton Group, Honest Burgers, KFC, Las Iguanas & Turtle Bay Restaurants, Legoland, Costa, Starbucks, Loungers, Leon, Merlin Entertainments, New World Trading Company, Nando’s, NHS, PizzaExpress, Pret A Manger, The Restaurant Group, Sainsburys, Tesco, Waitrose, and many more.

The sister shows will showcase the very best innovation from across their relevant sectors, thousands of brands, as well as provide unrivalled networking, and a world-class seminar programme full of expert advice on how to increase business, look after staff, discover trends and be more sustainable and profitable.

Last year's impressive speaker line up included Roger Whiteside (CEO of Greggs), Neil Lake (MD of Costa), Alasdair Murdoch (CEO of Burger King), Hannah McKay (Head of Food & Beverage at Caffé Nero), Atul Kochhar (Chef Patron, Atul Kochhar Restaurants), Laura Harper Hinton (co- founder, Caravan),Kate Nicholls (Chief Executive, UKHospitality), Susan Chappell (Divisional Director, Mitchells & Butlers), Sat Bains (Chef Patron, Restaurant Sat Bains with Rooms), Cyrus Todiwala OBE DL (Chef Patron, Café Spice Namasté and Mr Todiwala's Kitchen), Jon Knight (Managing Director, Leisure & Concessions of The Restaurant Group), Marta Pogroszewska (MD, GAIL’s Bakery), Mark Selby (Co-Founder and CEO of Wahaca), and many more.

“I’ve been blown away by the diversity of suppliers here and the quality of what they are doing. If you are looking for certain suppliers that are doing something really niche, I guarantee that they’re going to be at lunch!,” says Alasdair Murdoch, CEO of Burger King.

“Attending Commercial Kitchen is extremely important to discover industry innovations. It ensures my kitchen is more sustainable and helps me improve the way I run my kitchen,” says Cyrus Todiwala Obe Dl, Chef Patron at Café Spice Namasté.

“It was great to be back at Casual Dining this year – of all the trade shows that our sector runs, Casual Dining is the one that as a buyer you just can’t afford to miss out on,” says Andy Towle, Senior Procurement Manager at Pizza Hut Restaurants.

Registration is now open

The horticulture industry played its part in raising a smile on April 1st 2022 with a number of well executed April Fools which certainly garnered plenty of publicity.

Top billing goes to Pengelly Garden Centre who went viral on Facebook with their video about their new variety of Pastie Kernow seeds and their Pastie plants.  As the Post Office said "the winner for the best April Fools video goes to Pengelly Garden Centre, St Austell.  Absolute comedy gold."

Sarah Daniel said: "Thank you to everyone who liked & shared our post yesterday. It reached over 17,000 people & so far has been viewed over 14,000 times!

"We hope it gave you a laugh, which, with everything going on in the world, we feel is much needed at the moment."

It's worth watching right to the end...

Kev and the team at Lakeside Plant Centre in Telford had similar horticultural fool fun with their Lettuce Mayovien seeds, lettuce with Mayonnaise flavoured viens.  They explained: "With genetics being used more to create crops that are more drought tolerant, Hardy, quick to germinate. Is this a step too far ? A lettuce with a taste that gives a hint of mayonnaise. Obviously for Big Kev it's a 'no' as its a salad crop but what do you think???"

Michael Perry, Mr Plant Geek, posted an Instagram story with some old dutch cold weather tips on getting your bulbs to flower more quickly:

Those cheeky folk at the YHPA posted a spoof video about the formation of the MAHPA, for middle aged people in horticulture: "Introducing a new association: The Medium Aged People in Horticulture (MAPHA).  MAPHA hopes to bring together those in the industry who are aged 35 to 65, and who may find themselves feeling somewhat forgotten amongst all the media interest in horticulture's younger contingent."

And British Garden Centres gained plenty of local newspaper coverage for their Heavy Plant Crossing story, which we published on April 1st.  Link here.

That story prompted Neil Gow to send us this photo from 25 years ago, taken outside Worcester Garden Centre on Droitwich Road.

Hatton makes it a hat-trick for British Garden Centres - Group grows to 61 centres

British Garden Centres, the family-owned, Lincolnshire based garden centre business has made it a hat-trick of three new centres this year with their taking over of Hatton Garden Centre in Warwickshire this week.

The garden centre is a key part of the award-winning Hatton Country World and Adventure World shopping and tourist attraction in the heart of Warwickshire. Just 5 miles from Warwick Castle and minutes from J15 of the M40 the new centre makes a perfect addition to the British Garden Centres family.

Amy Stubbs, daughter of co-founder Charles Stubbs, said of the latest centre, “it is wonderful to be partnering with the team at Hatton Country World. Our experience as the UK’s largest family-led garden centre group tells us that this will be a fantastic garden centre. It will complement our existing Warwickshire centres at Studley, Charlecote, Newton Regis and Coventry.”

She went on to say; “we are on-site carrying out the first phase of improvements and interviewing to fill a number of vacancies in both the garden centre and restaurant. All being well, and weather allowing, we will open at Easter, or certainly very soon after.”

Hatton Garden Centre will generate 30+ new roles, further details can be found at https://britishgardencentres.com/vacancies-at-hatton-garden-centre/

MP Michael Gove hears of challenges for horticulture on visit to North Hill Nurseries

North Hill Nurseries in Chobham hosted their local MP and Secretary of State for Levelling Up and Housing and Communities, Michael Gove, this week for a visit that brought to life a range of current issues being faced by horticultural businesses across the country...

North Hill Nurseries in Chobham hosted their local MP and Secretary of State for Levelling Up and Housing and Communities, Michael Gove, this week for a visit that brought to life a range of current issues being faced by horticultural businesses across the country.

Arranged by North Hill’s Managing Director, Simon Edwards, with help from the HTA, the visit enabled Simon to highlight the additional trade challenges that the business has experienced since the UK left the European Union. He echoed the concerns of many in the horticulture sector over plant imports going into Border Check Points and the delays to the transit of highly perishable goods that this will inevitably cause.

The ongoing skills and labour shortages in the industry were also a topic of discussion. The HTA have been working to engage government on this issue to find reasonable solutions for members such as expanding the Seasonal Workers Scheme.

Minister Michael Gove commented: "I was very grateful to Simon Edwards, Manager of North Hill Nurseries in Chobham, for giving me a tour of his business. Simon is a true expert on the horticulture industry, and it was really helpful to hear his thoughts on what more the Government can do to support the sector."

HTA Public Affairs & Policy Manager, David Lydiat, was in attendance and spoke with the Minister about the issues facing businesses across the sector.

He said: “We were pleased to welcome Mr Gove; the gardening and horticulture industry underpins 50 per cent of the 25-year Environmental plan, which the Minister himself led and published. We spoke about the significant economic and health contributions being made by the horticulture industry and the Minister acknowledged the importance of horticulture in relation to the environment - key elements to consider in the levelling up agenda.

“Importantly we also raised our concerns over the current and upcoming regulation burden that our members are facing – this is leading to a cost of doing business crisis. It is essential that the government act to mitigate state interference that negatively impacts our industry.”
