New display ideas, new products, new suppliers at Bunnings first UK garden centre - GTN Xtra picture exclusive

The Bunnings Warehouse garden centre area at their pilot St Albans store provided plenty of new ways of displaying plants and products as well as some surprising new product lines and new suppliers to the UK market, when GTN Xtra made a visit yesterday.

There are not any traditional plant benches, instead creative use of concrete blocks and metal shelving form tiered plant displays from the floor right up to eye level, with bold hand written price labels.  “We are aiming to be the lowest price retailer,” they told GTN Xtra.

Colour blocked displays of pots surround the plant area, which has a wider range of plants than stocked at Homebase previously with garden sundries also outside in the covered planteria.

An extensive growing media sales and storage area is adjacent to possibly the widest range of garden decoration/landscaping products we’ve seen in either DIY stores or garden centres.  Creative screening, tiled options for play areas, new ideas for vertical growing.

The Bunnings buying team have clearly been working hard to find product differentiation.   Whites and The Organic Gardening Company from Australia are the most prominent new suppliers, along with products from UK based Sprout Gardening (their barcodes relate to Apollo Gardening).  They are backed up by products from Westland – Smart Ground Cover in stock, Scotts Miracle-Gro – Black Magic Potting Compost on display, Briers, Mr Fothergills, Hozelock, Kelkay, Elho, Outback, Landmann, Panacea, Veg Trug, Fiskars, Spear & Jackson, Qualcast and Stewart.

Inside the store it has much more of a warehouse feel.  High shelving units packed with products and even BBQ’s and spa baths displayed up high above them around the edges.

As for prices, Bunnings are making a 10% lower guarantee, refunding the difference and an extra 10% of anyone buys the same product elsewhere.

Staff, as ever make the final difference when it comes to customer service.  At Bunnings St Albans yesterday there were staff everywhere, possibly three or four times the number you’d have expected to find in a Homebase previously.  With a big focus on training – the number of badges on their aprons indicates the in house and supplier training courses they have completed – some of the staff present were on secondment from other stores getting ready for the next stage of the roll out.

GTN now looks forward to re-visiting the store as the season progresses.  In the meantime enjoy our photo gallery below…

Wyevale Nurseries tree sales up by 22%
Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford has announced its tree sales were up 22% year on year from August 2016 until the end of January 2017...
One of the UK’s leading nurseries in Hereford has announced its tree sales were up 22% year on year from August 2016 until the end of January 2017.

Wyevale Nurseries tree sales have been driven by domestic landscapers and landscape contractors, who it says are concerned with biosecurity.

Adam Dunnett, Sales and Marketing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “One of the buzz words in the industry at the moment is biosecurity and ensuring that plant stock is coming from a known source without the danger of importing pests or diseases.

“Trees are a particularly sensitive subject when it comes to biosecurity. Nearly 90% of our tree sales come from UK grown stock and 98% of those sales are from our own production. The other 10% come from all over the world and are vigorously screened before entering the country.

“Sales growth has been generated by a mix of newer ‘garden’ varieties such as Acer rubrum ‘Brandywine’, Amelanchier x grand. ‘Robin Hill’, Betula utilis jacquemontii and Liquidambar styraciflus ‘Worplesdon’.

“We have also seen a bit of a comeback from some old favourites such as Carpinus betulus ‘Frans Fontaine’, Crataegus laevigata ‘Paul’s Scarlet’, Prunus ‘Sunset Boulevard’ and Prunus avium.”

A number of Wyevale Nurseries key tree species are grown from seed with known seed provenance, examples would be Fagus (beech), Carpinus (hornbeam) and Quercus (oak).

Adam added: “We have also seen an increase in demand for pleached trees, mainly Carpinus betulus and we’re able to create these to customer’s size requirements. Pleached are commonly used to create a green screen above a fence level or a raised wall. We have a selection of pleached Carpinus and Prunus varieties available as container grown trees.”

The product selection available from Wyevale Nurseries is enviable across the industry and the talented team regularly introduces new, award-winning plant varieties.

Its main business is to supply garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners with a comprehensive array of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants.

Diarmuid Gavin is new brand ambassador for Vivagreen

Vivagreen, winners of the 2016 GIMA SeedCorn fund, have appointed Diarmuid Gavin as their brand ambassador across their range of ‘free from’ home and garden products...

Vivagreen, winners of the 2016 GIMA SeedCorn fund, have appointed Diarmuid Gavin as their brand ambassador across their range of ‘free from’ home and garden products.

It was a chance meeting at Glee in September when Russell and Garrett Walsh, Joint Managing Directors at Vivagreen, bumped into their compatriot, Diarmuid Gavin which resulted in a new partnership for the Dublin-based business.

Diarmuid was fascinated by the innovative technology and the environmental benefits of the Vivagreen range and keen to find out more.

Since their first meeting, Diarmuid has been instrumental in the development of the marketing campaign as well as getting first-hand experience of the products in his own home and garden.

“Like lots of people, I like to do what’s right for our fragile eco system. It’s not always easy to make the right choices. I’ve recently used a new range of products that have really helped me to be kind to my garden and the greater environment because the ‘FREE FROM’ range from Vivagreen is made entirely from natural plant materials,” said Diarmuid.

“The products are great quality and very effective – as good, if not better, than the conventional alternatives I’d been using. But the FREE FROM range from Vivagreen is all made from ingredients that break down into natural materials and then return nutrients to the soil.

"There are no pesticides, plastics, biocides or harmful chemicals. The products are totally free from damaging ingredients so they’re safe around my family and pets, and they’re really kind to the soil also.

"I choose FREE FROM products from Vivagreen whenever I can because I know I’m taking care of my family and doing my part for the care of the environment.”

Diarmuid will feature in the company’s marketing campaigns and on their in store point of sale and merchandising materials, highlighting the benefits of the ‘free from’ range of home and garden products.

The range includes MossOff Multi-Surface Concentrate, a new and totally unique biocide-free way of controlling moss and algae on all outdoor surfaces. The unique technology is chemical free and completely safe to children and pets as well as plant life and even fish and ponds.

To find out more about Vivagreen’s range of environmentally friendly products go to www.vivagreengroup.com, e-mail the general enquiries office on office@vivagreengroup.com  or call 020 7197 2317.

Plant pot manufacturer Hum celebrates export success

There may be a stream of Presidential news coming out of the USA at the moment but for British plant pot manufacturer Hum the biggest story is about their own export success.

A distribution agreement with Evergreen Enterprises means that gift, home and garden stores in North America and Canada will be stocking Hum pots this Spring.

"Working with Evergreen has been a fantastic opportunity for us," said Hum co-founder Lara Kelly, "and we are excited to know our funky planters are going out to garden, DIY and gift retailers all over the USA right now."

The new range of designs, created for the US market, is now also available here in the UK, and increased production means that pricing is now more competitive than ever.

The Evergreen collection pots are made from fade-resistant and frost-resistant plastic for outdoor or indoor use. Made in the UK, these colourful planters are 22cm tall, 5L volume and can be purchase as a Stand Deal with an attractive metal display stand.

"Exporting high volumes of product to the USA is not just good news for us, it also means we can offer a better deal to our UK customers as a result. We can ship out orders within days from the Midlands-based warehouse, and we are already supplying a range of garden centres and gift shops across the UK," said Lara Kelly.

Hygge trend driving customer trends in the garden

Kelkay have developed a wide range of beautiful natural stone paving products to respond to the trend for Hygge inspired simple, natural designs...

Kelkay have developed a wide range of beautiful natural stone paving products to respond to the trend for Hygge inspired simple, natural designs.

You must have been hibernating this winter if you haven’t heard about Hygge, and ironically if you have been hibernating you may well have been practicing Hygge. This new trend emanating from Denmark is not so much a style trend as a state of mind and a way of life! Defying a literal translation, Hygge means the simple contentment of existing in a natural environment and it is often associated with a cosy winter fireside.

But with spring just around the corner, trend watchers are expecting Hygge to strongly influence consumer attitudes to all aspects of their lives, including their gardens. Kelkay have already detected a strong move towards natural paving products, as a result of which they have extended and improved their range significantly for 2017. They believe they are ready to meet the new trends and aspirations of consumers with natural sandstone paving, beautiful smooth polished sandstone, and stylish sawn limestone, natural slate and cool granite setts.

Kelkay are well positioned to supply a range of natural Hygge-friendly products thanks to their hugely experienced buying team who have sourced the most beautiful natural stone products from sustainable sources in India, China and Europe. They support and endorse the Ethical Trading Base Code which means that all workers are guaranteed a safe working environment and a fair wage, as well as being protected from all types of discrimination or abuse.

And the real breakthrough has come thanks to Kelkay’s unique approach to packaging and palletising many of the products to make them retail ready. The Natural Sandstone range is available in single slabs on pallets delivered to store so they are easy for consumers to select and carry home. Or they can be supplied directly in ‘patio packs’ of mixed sizes and shapes that fit together beautifully to create a unique and natural looking garden design feature.

To find out more about the whole of Kelkay’s Natural Stone and their other successful garden landscaping products, go to www.kelkay.com or e-mail the general enquiries office on salesenquiries@kelkay.co.uk or call to speak to us on 01405 869333.

HTA Study Tour celebrates and learns in Holland

It was an action packed few days for garden centres and suppliers attending the HTA Garden Retail Study Tour in Holland, joining in with the celebrations of The Garden Retail Experience Award winners...

See first pictures from the study tour

It was an action packed few days for garden centres and suppliers attending the HTA Garden Retail Study Tour in Holland as HTA Communications Manager Gill Ormrod explains.

The tour began on Wednesday with a visit to the Elho factory where the group got to hear the latest trend information and ideas from this family company that was established in 1964. The offices themselves are a design masterpiece and the home from home showroom layouts are impressive, as is the factory itself which turns out over 60 million pieces a year. Fifty percent of the electricity generated by the company windmill runs the office and factory complex, with the remaining 50% being sold back to the grid! If that wasn’t enough they also have a number of bee hives onsite (and produce Elho honey) to educate visiting school groups about the role of bees as pollinators.

In the evening the group attended the Garden Retail Experience Gala Dinner returning the next day to tour the exhibition in detail. The Garden Retail Experience is not a trade show but an inspiration event using themes to bring together groups of products to inspire. The overall theme for this year’s event was ‘Growing Emotion’ highlighting that by creating the right emotion in customers can led to increased sales. Tours from Laurens Doesborgh and Romeo Summers provided great insight into the ideas behind the themes and the tangible ways in which garden centres can bring these stories to life. From an inspiring ‘back to nature’ entrance display, a mini festival with mismatched plants to a butterfly house instore and a rain garden feature there was plenty of food for thought. The day finished with a visit to a garden centre – Ranzijn Nieuw-Vennep – a family owned group which is expanding rapidly in the Netherlands. As to be expected there were impressive displays of early bulbs and house plants.

It was a case of being up at the crack of dawn on Friday to visit the famous ‘Clock’ plant and flower auction at Aalsmeer, hosted by Paul Moors and Brian Redman from Garden Centre Fresh. Paul, an ex-clock buyer provided an overview and the group was suitably impressed by the efficiency of the clock process watching stock moving through at a rate of knots. Flora Holland then provided a fascinating tour of the processing and distribution centre and the organised chaos of moving the trolleys to the right place prior to distribution.

The tour concluded with a trip to Hilverda De Boer, one of The Netherlands largest cut flower exporters, to see the operation in action as it gears up for Valentine’s Day and hear about the most popular flowers in different countries. Within 24 hours the flowers seen on the ground could be on sale in Japan, the Middle East or the US – no mean feat!

All in all a fascinating couple of days with plenty of learning and ideas. Many thanks to the very generous hospitality provided by all those involved including Elho, TPK and the Garden Retail Experience, Garden Centre Fresh, Flora Holland and Hilverda De Boer.

GTN Xtra caught up with Greatest Christmas Award Winners Noma Lights and Aylett Nurseries last week...

Noma Lights won the Bronze Award for The Greatest Christmas Supplier of the year.  Jodie Grimmer told GTN Xtra "we're working hard to make lighting an all year round seller for our customers as homeowners decorate their gardens as well as decorate their homes for Christmas."

The team at Aylett Nurseries proudly display their Greatest Christmas Plant Sales Team Award.  As our GTN Bestsellers commentary this week says all those pre-Christmas plant sales are now generating many great garden centre return visits.  Marcus Cousins said: "Customers are not only coming back to but feed and feeders, they are also buying more housplants too!"

We can fully agree with that.  The vibrant, colourful display of a great range was too tempting for the GTN team too.

Fito Drip Feeders have moved back to No 1 this week with Growth Technology’s Orchid Myst not far behind at No 2.
