Taylors Bulbs present Tulip Royal Celebration to Her Majesty The Queen at the Chelsea Flower Show

Taylors Bulbs presented a new variety of tulip to Her Majesty The Queen at the Chelsea Flower Show on Monday 23rd May.  The family business are by Royal Appointment as Bulb Growers to H.M. The Queen and were approached to find a variety that could be named in honour of the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Roger Taylor, Director of the family firm, said “We were asked to trial a number of new varieties in Autumn 2014 with a view to a selection being made the following Spring.  We wanted to find something unique and so had to try many different types and colours.  After assessing the trials, a variety was selected and a suitable name required. Royal Celebration was chosen and we are greatly honoured to have presented this to Her Majesty today at the Chelsea Flower Show.”

The variety is classified as a Lily-Flowering type of tulip which feature tall, slender flowers with a narrow waist.  Bred from seedlings, the flowers of Royal Celebration start cream in colour with an increasing pink blush to the cheeks of the petal.  Flowering to approximately 50cm tall and quite late in the flowering season, the dark stems complement the colour in the petal.

Taylors Bulbs of Holbeach, Lincolnshire, exhibit daffodils at the show and have now won 23 consecutive Gold Medals at Chelsea.  The display of over 80 varieties and 2500 flowers is the result of 15,000 flowers grown in controlled conditions every year especially for the show.
