Rowena Garden Centre, near Leicester, re-opened yesterday, back in the hands of the family who started the Rowena business over 30 years ago.

Led by Roger Mackay, three generations of the family were on hand to welcome customers back to the site after a six-week re-generation following the closure by Dobbies.

The re-opening marks the start of a new chapter for Rowena after having to move locations due to the dualling of the A6 and changes in ownership through Gardenstore (Malcolm Parkinson), the family again, Wyevale and latterly Dobbies.

Once again suppliers have pulled out all the stops to help get the centre set up for spring trading, in Rowena’s case with the added dimension of products and ranges making the most of their APAC heritage.

At the opening yesterday the team from Corby + Fellas were on hand to ensure smooth sign ups of the Rowena loyalty app, with plenty of happy customers taking trollies full of plants and products through the tills.

Caulders Garden Centres has reached a significant milestone with the opening of its tenth site, Caulders Linlithgow. This latest addition highlights the company’s continued growth and commitment to expanding its presence in Scotland while maintaining the high standards of horticultural excellence and customer experience for which it is known.

Colin and Mandy Barrie, owners of Caulders, have expressed their pride in this achievement. Colin Barrie commented, “When Caulders was founded, reaching double figures in the number of garden centres was never something we imagined. This milestone is a testament to the dedication of our fantastic team and the ongoing support of our loyal customers. We are also immensely grateful to Virgin Money, whose backing has enabled us to invest over £1 million into refurbishing Caulders Linlithgow, ensuring it meets the high expectations of today’s garden retail market.”

Located in Linlithgow, the site has undergone a substantial transformation, offering a comprehensive garden centre experience that includes a diverse range of plants, garden essentials, homeware, and gifts. As with all Caulders locations, a strong emphasis has been placed on creating a welcoming atmosphere that encourages customers to enjoy both retail and hospitality in equal measure.

Mandy Barrie added, “Caulders has always been about more than just selling plants—it is about creating an experience that blends gardening inspiration with a strong sense of community. Linlithgow is a fantastic location, and we are excited to bring the Caulders ethos to this new site.”

Caulders continues to strengthen its reputation as a leading independent garden centre group in Scotland, focusing on steady and sustainable growth while upholding the values that have driven its success for over two decades. The opening of the tenth centre marks a significant step forward, with further opportunities for expansion and innovation anticipated in the future.

Furniture 20% off already at Dobbies... thoughts from garden centres on Easter and beyond - UPDATED with extra comment from British Garden Centres, Gordale, Planters, Scotsdales, Blue Diamond, Bents and more from Alton

Last week we received a Dobbies customer e-mail notifying us about the start of a 20% off promotion on their Malmo garden furniture range, which came as a surprise given we had heard of good early season outdoor living sales at other garden centres we have visited recently.

Last week we received a Dobbies customer e-mail notifying us about the start of a 20% off promotion on their Malmo garden furniture range, which came as a surprise given we had heard of good early season outdoor living sales at other garden centres we have visited recently.

With thoughts of Easter and beyond in mind we thought we should ask about sales across the country and expectations for the rest of the season given the increases in household bills and the uncertain geopolitical situation.

Justin Williams at Fron Goch told us: “I think your point about geopolitical uncertainty is a valid one - no doubt some people will thinking twice regarding visiting USA; we may see greater number of people again using staycations, especially with some decent weather experienced recently.

“I feel the biggest change may come from:

  1. We are five years on now from the beginning of covid, we are starting to trade out of the fall out of that expectational period. For the last 2 or 3 years we faced a customer base that had saturated their need/want to garden and staycation - opting instead for social activities, if at all possible abroad in the sun. After all we forward sold about 3 years’ worth of furniture in one year really!
  2. We have all struggled to find our new base level, with many, me included, over buying for a saturated market. This has affected margin on outdoor living items for the last 3 years.
  3. Our customer base has been facing inflationary pressures from the Covid and Ukraine war affect - with many people either feeling poorer or concerned and behaving more cautiously.
  4. At present, albeit if we ignore USA trade announcements, we have a period of greater financial stability and with most working people likely receiving a  pay rise likely of double the annual inflation figure for 2024. Granted we are all yet to see the inflationary consequences of the budget changes but I people feel more secure and less worried, therefore more open to spending.
  5. We are also facing a general decline in the high street and some shopping centres - times have been hard and the strongest and best will survive and attract the customers. If we're doing a great job, we are likely to do well; not everyone is.

“Here at Fron Goch we are seeing better like for like growth in our current financial year of 11% , with better plants and furniture sales too and I feel this is likely to continue until the end of year. Odds on we will have better weather than last year too.

“I'll put my neck out and say I have strong to high expectations for the rest of year, if international disruption avoids us.”

Sarah Squire at Squires Garden Centres said: “After a good March, early April is shaping up well too. It is great to have enjoyed a settled period of lovely spring weather early in the season, following some recent springs where the weather has ranged from below par to dismal.

“We always seem to need more than just the odd day or two of sunshine to get people out and thinking about their gardens and this year the weather has obliged. To see customers enjoying purchasing plants and core gardening products is very encouraging and energises us all.

“Of course the weather is driving this, but with so much economic and geopolitical uncertainty, I believe that plants, gardening and nature can be really uplifting for people.

“I hesitate to make any predictions or hold too many expectations because the world is such a topsy turvy place right now but the weather forecast looks pretty settled for a little longer which is a good thing for the whole of our industry.”

Will Blake, St Peters Garden Centre in Worcester and GCA Chairman: “Yes, it's been very busy so far, and we're expecting it to continue through until Easter, and hopefully beyond. A good early start to the season, and now people have started gardening projects, I'm sure they will continue regardless of any dips in the weather.

“Interesting point about Dobbies discounting early; we've seen some good early sales on garden furniture and BBQs, (March was 300% vs 2024), so we wouldn't necessarily do blanket discounts. Having said that, we do have a calendar of promotional activity to encourage customers to come to us, so this will be happening regardless.

“I agree, with everything going on in the world and rising costs, and better than normal weather, I think people may spend more time in their homes and gardens, which should be very positive for us.

“Long may the good weather continue! It was long overdue due and will really help our industry after a couple of very tough years!”

Simon Bourne at Perrywood in the East of England added: “Isn't it wonderful to see some proper sunshine in spring! It certainly makes us feel much better in this industry.

“We're super confident as usual that Easter will be good. We always think we can do more and we always try and sell as much as possible instead of being happy with artificial targets. That being said, if the weather takes a turn, we will be disappointed but we will have the confidence that gardeners have started early this year and that there is strong demand on plants, garden sundries and garden furniture. Garden furniture has been VERY good so far and I think it will continue.

“My thoughts on holidays are that people are taking more and more, I don't agree that geopolitical uncertainty is stopping them but I also think that there is a sector of the population with more and more disposable cash and therefore there is enough to spread around. Listen to the headlines and you would believe that no one has any money but head to the supermarkets and trolleys are full of more expensive foods, head to the restaurants and they are busy and look at cars in the car park and there are still plenty of brand new ones.”

In the South West, Mike Burks of The Gardens Group told us: “Furniture sales are at record levels and it seems somewhat odd that some retailers are already discounting.

“We have had an extraordinary start to the season with March 26% up and early April at record levels too. And it is in core gardening and garden furniture where we have the biggest increases.

“It’s all down to the weather and a reaction to how dull and wet the winter was.

“The good news is that a bit of bad weather now won’t totally dampen sales as gardeners will be on a roll and will have a momentum that they just didn’t get last spring.

“Retail prices have risen because of the government’s budget but this isn’t hampering sales.

“In the 5 recessions that I think we have experienced whilst running The Gardens Group we have found customers perhaps not taking that second foreign holiday and instead spending it in their gardens. Gardening is a relatively inexpensive hobby and as its also great for physical health, mental health and, if done correctly, good for the environment and so it’s positive all round.

“Climate change has meant that the weather is such a lottery that predicting anything is somewhat foolish but I’m cautiously optimistic!”

David Yardley, CEO of Klondyke Garden Centres reports: “Sales have continued into April so far and we reckon the frustration of the past two years of poor weather has got people out in their gardens and doing projects or tidy ups. Furniture sales have been good so far and up on last year but still a lot to sell. We have not had to discount anything other than end of lines and last ones from previous years and new ranges have been well received.

“Will this be a good season or an average season, who knows? It will be the weather as always that determines this. It’s good to have some cash in the bank but there are a lot of weeks left in the season. We have to make the most of the good weather whilst we have it but not get carried away.”

Adam Wigglesworth at Ayletts in St Albans was in a very chirpy mood saying: “Furniture and outdoor living sales are very strong here.  We have no problem selling high priced sets and expensive gazebo's.

“When the sun comes out the car park is full and people are shopping. We were 24% up in March, not a record breaker but a great start to the year.  I’m very chirpy as we have a decent weather forecast for next 10 days through to easter.”

The last word goes to Derek and Andy Bunker at Altons: “The age-old answer is: Weather, weather, weather.  That is 90% of the reason, nothing to do with the timing of Easter. Even with all the doom and economic gloom.”

Andy Bunker added over the weekend: "Just to add a little more meat on the bone, I’m sure it’s out there with one of these statistics companies but if you do a direct a direct comparison on the doom and gloom years because of the following:

  1. Interest rates – highest ever
  2. Fuel prices 2022 over £7 a gallon
  3. Poor interest rates on pensioners savings

Just three that jump to mind.

"Then take the following to get to my point: Trade in March to May in 2022, add in the weather, then all three of the above have no bearing on how trade was.

"Personally, and it’s not really any different but there is very rarely any  good news but the sun is shining in most of the country all over the weekend and we are all very busy in all departents.  Yes it’s been tough, very tough. I spend a lot of time on the shop floor and I am noticing what i call the “occasionals” out already when normally I see and feel them in May.

"With Easter again, if it stays similar weather to present then the public will be gardening."

Mark Scott, Commercial Manager at Gordale in Cheshire has told us: "Once again the sun shone in March, reminding us of the glorious lockdown weeks in 2020 when there wasn’t a cloud in the sky, and people were stuck at home desperate to garden! Five years later and we are open and optimistic as trading has seen a good uplift, particularly in the core areas of plants, garden care and outdoor living.

"I’m a big believer in holding your nerve when it comes to discounts. Yes there have been challenges in the marketplace, with both economic pressures and overstocks from the post covid boom, but I hope that most retailers now have rebalanced and restocked to sensible levels meaning that discounting really should not be necessary. Of course businesses require steady and regular cashflow to keep them moving and to pay the ever increasing bills, but they also need profit if they are going to survive.  Profit to re-invest to improve, profit to provide the income for the business owner and profit to help the business cope with unexpected problems, even bigger bills or less than favourable trading – both of which have damaged retailers in recent years.

"It is therefore vital that we take every opportunity to maximise our profitability that is available to us and strong outdoor living sales early on are a great opportunity for good profit building.

"There will always be someone cheaper – the internet trader with a cheap(er) BBQ, a slightly less expensive (and/or poorer quality) casual dining set but we are “experience” retailers - our stores are destinations for people who want a nice way to spend their time and their hard earned cash. "People want to come to Garden Centres, and as an industry we are pretty amazing at what we do – customers love our spaces, our people, our hand picked products and our passion so please have faith and hold your nerve.

"Here's to the continuation of the sun, and a very profitable 2025 gardening season."

Beth Ingram, General Manager at Planters reports: "We have seen good furniture sales across the group and have injected our range with some new pieces which seem to be going well. We have reduced our prices slightly to compete with the online market."

At British Garden Centres, Amy Stubbs has told GTN Xtra: "Overall we are still feeling very optimistic for Easter and beyond, we have had a great start to spring and this weekend we have offered our family card members an extra incentive of 10% off and this has really given some strong furniture sales.

"We feel that because the season has started off well, it will “give people the bug” to keep on gardening and enjoying their outdoor space!"

Caroline Owen Scotsdales in Cambridge has just added: "We have had a very good March and it is across all categories.

"I am sure that with the weather forecast for the next ten days we should see a very good Easter. Last week we were very positive against last year even taking the Easter Bank holiday 2024 into consideration. And for a garden centre that is very horticulturally focused its very good.

"Furniture sales have been exceptional on last year and we can all offer 20% off it just depends what the original retail pricing strategy was, lets see if that carries on.

"We always run a 20% discount off certain sets the last two weeks of Februray and this year with similar weather to last sales were 50% up in that period.

"I do think that our customers love the safe haven of a garden centre and with the world as it is I think we will continue to see that, easy parking, lots to look at and a lovely place to have a cup of coffee, what could be better.

"I am very optimistic for a good season with a small caveat that we still need a decent May."

Alan Roper, Managing Director of Blue Diamond Garden Centres says: "It's just the weather playing its part.

"Given it’s been on the dry throughout February and March significantly below the average rainfall, the figures were bound to be stronger. At some point the jet stream will shift and we will get above average rainfall so let’s hope it isn’t May!

"Make hay whilst the sun shines, it’s far too early to read this as a good season, focus on now, don’t overthink would be my advice."

Matthew Bent at Bents Garden & Home has just told us: "We are finding a very similar pictures to what others are saying, and how customers are spending.

"Not sure about diverting money from holidays, it would be good to see what the travel firms say as holidays have been booming recently.

"The weather is the big factor and influencing customers spend, it is probably the best weather we have had since 2020 and it really helps to lift the mood when the news in the press is so depressing.

"We also think it is 4/5 years since customers invested in the garden and so potentially time to replace plants, garden furniture, bbqs and accessories which might looking a bit old."

Squire's looks to future after resilient 2024 performance

Squire’s Garden Centres has recently filed its accounts for financial year ending 31 July 2024. As anticipated, core garden centre performance was impacted by the poor weather during the crucial spring season.

Chairman Sarah Squire, commented: “While our results for 2024 were somewhat lacklustre due to the weather, the company retains confidence in the long-term future of our industry. Confidence that is borne out by the excellent spring trading experienced so far this year. The British public remain enthused about plants and gardening. Over the long term, our industry has the potential to bring huge health and wellbeing benefits to the UK population and assist the country in promoting nature and biodiversity, as well as contributing to the UK economy.  Although the October budget was not one to encourage growth, as a company, we continue to plan for the long term.”

For financial year ending 31 July 2024, total sales dropped 2% overall to £64.9m (2023: £66.3m).  Within that total, Garden Centre sales dropped by 4% to £54.7m (2023: £56.9m), while Restaurant sales rose by 9% to £10.2m (2023: £9.4m). The Barnsfold Nurseries business contributed £1.9m of sales in its first full year, taking total Group sales to £66.8m (2023: £67.9m). Profit before tax dropped to £2.2m (2023: £2.4m). The company’s nursery business Barnsfold also had a challenging year due to the unusually cool and wet spring season.

The company continues to have faith in the strength of the sector and sees many opportunities for growth in the longer term. With that in mind, since the end of the 2024 financial year Squire’s has finished the re-roofing of its flagship Twickenham centre, complete with solar panels, and introduced a stylish new shop fit. At Milford, the old garden furniture building has been replaced with an extension that reflects the character of the area and also contributes to Squire’s sustainability goals through solar panels and much more efficient heating and lighting control. The site no longer uses any gas.

At the very end of 2024, Squire’s completed the purchase of the renowned Liss Forest Nursery business to create Barnsfold Liss. This acquisition had the aim of protecting the supply of hardy plants and increasing the amount and variety of home-grown, locally-sourced plants for Squire’s customers. Barnsfold Liss continues to supply many other garden centres too with a wide range of quality bedding and hardy plants.

In February, Squire’s purchased the long-established Hare Hatch garden centre near Twyford, safeguarding the employment of the team there. At the same time the company launched its ‘Friends of Squire’s’ customer loyalty programme. The company continues to build up its sustainability programme and remains committed to its charitable and community involvement.

Above: Three generations of the Squire family launching the ‘Friends of Squire’s’ reward app in February 2025 - Colin Squire, Chairman Emeritus (centre), daughter, Sarah Squire, Chairman (left) and granddaughter, Felicia Baily, Squire’s Sustainability Lead (right).

Sarah Squire addeds: “The period since our year end has been extremely busy and I would like to pay particular tribute to my talented colleagues throughout the company who have shown such commitment and worked so tirelessly. The external geopolitical environment remains sadly riven by conflict in many theatres and consumer confidence is still somewhat fragile. However, we have total confidence in our teams and the recent spell of sunny weather has shown that the public retain a huge appetite for plants and gardening. Let’s hope that Spring 2025 is really one to write home about.”

British brand, RocketGro is in the spotlight this week, as the Peat-free Partnership debuts its new Hort Shorts series, showcasing peat-free success stories from within the industry.

In the first episode, filmed at RocketGro’s site in North Somerset, Managing Director Toby Thomas explains why “peat free was a choice” from the very inception of the business, which is one of the very few growing media producers in the UK to have “never touched peat”.

The film, which was shot last month, is being released by the Peat-free Partnership on April 1st and is part of a series of shorts celebrating businesses in the peat-free forum, as the organisation continues to push for legislation to end peat sales.

Supported by the hashtag #endpeatsales, the video will be hosted on the Peat-free Partnership’s YouTube channel and its website, as well as being shared across all social media platforms, including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn and BlueSky. It will also be promoted in the organisation’s April Newsletter.

RocketGro was delighted to be part of the project and welcomed the chance to offer a closer look at its operation – which now boasts a carbon capture plant on the 6,000-acre farm – whilst discussing a topic the team feels passionately about.

Managing Director Toby Thomas commented: “I was very happy to take up the Peat-free Partnership’s offer to feature in their first Hort Short and really enjoyed having them down to film at our site. People are finally waking up to the realisation that we cannot continue mining peat and can see the detrimental effect it is having on the environment, so it is important that legislation catches up!

"RocketGro is already doing its bit by offering a truly sustainable peat-free alternative and we are on course to be the World’s first climate positive compost producer this year, which is why it’s great that we, and other like-minded professionals in the horticulture industry, are being given the opportunity to share our journey.

“As I said in the film, ‘we all want to do what’s right for the environment, we all have a common purpose… and peat-free is a no-brainer!”

Davidson Richards has helped its customer J. Parker’s roll out OpSuite for its new Daisy Nook Garden Centre in Failsworth near Manchester.

Co-CEO, Keith Bateman said: ‘Having been privileged to partner with J. We worked extremely closely with their team to ensure they were live with OpSuite at their new Daisy Nook site in line with their tight timescales. In this scenario our key role is to ensure our retailers can quickly and easily roll out new stores and we achieved this level of responsiveness given OpSuite’s inherent technology, our expertise and the fantastic collective effort with ours and the J. Blackstone Products will launch National Griddle Week for the first time in the UK to coincide with the annual awareness week in America that has been celebrated for the last four years. It will be running for a week including two glorious weekends between April 5th and April 13th. National Griddle Week is Blackstone’s annual kick-off to the outdoor cooking season celebrating great food, good memories, and spending time with family and friends.

Griddles are the latest part of the outdoor cooking revolution in the UK where flat plate griddles are starting to take over from traditional grill style BBQ’s. Griddles, made of steel, have a non-stick surface once seasoned and are used in every restaurant and food cooking establishment in the UK. They are used for their versatility of cooking, speed and simplicity.

This National Griddle Week, Blackstone will sponsor exclusive offers with BBQ retailers around the UK and are focusing on their World’s first 36-inch griddle with air fryers.  This game-changing product offers unparalleled convenience, allowing outdoor chefs to cook an entire meal without ever stepping back indoors. Gone are the days of running between your kitchen and garden to fetch chips, potatoes, mozzarella sticks, or other oven-cooked sides. The new Blackstone griddle provides everything you need in one place, combining the power of a 36” griddle with integrated airfryers and a warming drawer, perfect for cooking a variety of meals simultaneously, and ensuring that everything is ready to serve at the perfect temperature. The 36" Griddle Airfryer Combo is designed to transform the outdoor cooking landscape.

Steven May, Blackstone’s UK Country Manager said “Launching National Griddle week is the start of the outdoor cooking revolution in the UK. With a griddle you can cook so much more outside as there are no gaps for the food to fall between. That means as well as the BBQ staples like burgers and sausages, you can now cook pancakes, smash burgers and stir fry’s, in fact anything you can cook in a pan, you can now cook outside on a griddle. There are already over 50,000 griddle owners who have dramatically increased the amount they cook outside. A griddle can be up to temperature within a handful of minutes, and you can cook everything from start to finish inside 25 minutes. The very best part though is that with a simple squirt of water you can scrape away and steam clean you griddle in seconds. This means for the first time the chef can sit down with their family and friends to enjoy the food they cook together.”

May added “National Griddle Week is our way of celebrating the rapidly growing Griddle Nation and the entire outdoor cooking community. We hope everyone will join us as we celebrate the amazingly varied possibilities of outdoor cooking.  Griddle enthusiasts are encouraged to follow Blackstone's social media channels for opportunities to win exclusive giveaway bundles as we celebrate National Griddle Week for the first time in the UK."

Since 2008, Blackstone has transformed outdoor cooking into more than just searing steaks and flipping burgers. Outdoor cooking is about being able to cook anything and everything, at any time of day, all year round. Join us April 5th-13th and celebrate the possibilities.

Husqvarna Group, the global leader in gardening tools and mowers, and home to renowned brands GARDENA and Flymo, has launched a showroom in the North of England’s largest and most sustainable logistics facility.

The showroom is part of a multi-million pound investment in the 602,000 sq ft warehouse within Maersk’s state-of-the-art logistics complex in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

With a capacity for more than 64,000 pallets, the move will strengthen GARDENA’s customer service and supply chain efficiency due to its space, location and excellent transport links.

Howard Scott, GARDENA UK Country Manager, said: “Our investment in this new facility reflects our dedication to putting the customer at the heart of our operations.

“By enhancing our warehousing and logistics capabilities, we are strengthening our ability to respond quickly and effectively to the needs of our growing customer base.”

The partnership with Maersk, a leader in sustainable logistics solutions, will help reduce the company’s environmental footprint as the complex is built to BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ standards and incorporates energy-efficient systems.

Premchandar Ramachandran, Regional Head of Maersk Contract Logistics Europe and IMEA, said: “As a global leader in logistics services, our newly built facility will allow us to better connect and simplify supply chains for our key customers such as Husqvarna Group.

“Providing their key brands; Flymo and GARDENA, with a space to showcase their product range to a variety of stakeholders, is a prime example of the success such partnerships can create.”

The new UK showroom will showcase Flymo and GARDENA’s pioneering products and serve as a central hub for training, product demonstrations, and hands-on experiences for employees, retailers and partners.

Housing the complete ranges, the interactive showroom is designed to inspire and educate stakeholders as well as mark Flymo’s 60th anniversary of its iconic hover lawnmower.

The showroom offers an opportunity to highlight the iconic brand’s impressive journey, showcasing its innovation, growth, and ongoing product development while honouring its rich heritage.

Sarah Bentham, GARDENA UK Marketing Manager, said: “This venture is a great opportunity for our customers to get hands on with products and truly understand why Flymo and GARDENA are market leaders.

“Allowing our team to provide insightful and interactive sessions ensures that our stakeholders are truly motivated and invested in the brands.”

Family-run garden centre and nursery for sale

Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co, has been instructed to market Giants Seat Garden Centre, located next to the River Irwell to the north west of Manchester.

Established in 1964, the centre has been successfully run by the Kidd family for over 60 years, and is well-known for offering a wide range of seasonal and perennial outdoor plants, garden tools, equipment, fertilisers, compost and other gardening essentials, as well as expert advice and personalised support. The centre has an established reputation and loyal customer base.

The site boasts a prime location overlooking the river and spans just over 2 acres, including a three-bedroom detached house which has historically been used as owners’ accommodation. The property offers potential for further development and expansion to grow trade further.

After decades of stewardship, the Kidd family plan to retire and are seeking a new owner to take the reins.

“After 60 years serving the gardening community around Giants Seat Garden Centre, retirement plans for our family-run business now loom large,” said Alan Kidd. “Our family have run the successful nursery/garden centre surrounded by wildlife along the bank of the River Irwell for six decades, developing a strong reputation with our customers for quality and service along with our homegrown plants. We have always strived to offer the highest quality and the best value for money, and now it is time to attend to our own gardens.”

Andrew Birnie, Director – Retail at Christie & Co who is managing the sale, commented: “Hot on the heels of completing the sale of Daisy Nook Garden Centre in Manchester last month, we are pleased to bring to the market Giants Seat Garden Centre & Nursery.  Focussing primarily on growing high-quality horticulture rather than garden centre retail sales, and including a three-bedroom house on site, this opportunity should appeal to owner-operator buyers with an interest in horticulture. The profitable centre sits alongside the River Irwell and therefore enjoys lovely views. We welcome enquiries from interested parties."

The centre is on the market with a guide price of £845,000 freehold plus stock.

Each year, LOFA allocates funds to a range of charities that align with our business principles or hold personal importance for our industry and members. One such organisation is Dementia UK.

While you're reading this, someone in the UK will be diagnosed with dementia. It stands as one of the most significant health issues of our era, affecting half of your colleagues and customers at some point—whether through direct diagnosis or by caring for someone who has the condition. Too often, individuals are left to navigate these ongoing and evolving challenges alone.

Dementia UK aims to change that. They specialise in dementia nursing, offering support not just to patients but to entire families. Daily, their 459 specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide critical assistance to families nationwide, striving to improve their quality of life for as long as possible. Whether through their Helpline, virtual or in-person clinic appointments, or community services, these nurses offer indispensable support. Their goal is to increase the number of nurses to 500 by the end of 2025.

The Greenfingers Charity has returned to Helen & Douglas House in Oxford, reigniting a special partnership that in 2017 saw the creation of the stunning Kaleidoscope Garden. This year, the charity has once again joined forces with the hospice team for a series of volunteer days, coinciding with Greenfingers’ biggest annual fundraising event – Garden Re-Leaf Day – which took place on Friday, 21st March.

The volunteer days aimed to refresh and revitalise the much-loved Kaleidoscope Garden, ensuring it remains a beautiful and peaceful space for children, families, and hospice staff. Leading these efforts were corporate volunteers from Abingdon-based garden product manufacturer, Smart Garden Products, long-standing supporters of Greenfingers Charity and the hospices it serves.

Two teams from Smart Garden Products generously volunteered their time. The first group were on-site on Garden Re-Leaf Day itself on 21st March, while the second team rolled up their sleeves on Friday 28th March (photos are from this day), working under the supervision of the Helen & Douglas House gardening team to give the garden a much-needed spring tidy-up.

Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising & Communications at Greenfingers Charity, said: “Helen & Douglas House holds a special place in the history of Greenfingers Charity, and we are thrilled to return to the Kaleidoscope Garden with the incredible support of Smart Garden Products and our dedicated volunteers. These gardens provide vital outdoor spaces for children and families, and it’s wonderful to see so many people come together to help ensure they remain uplifting and inspiring places.”

Jo Spillane from Helen & Douglas House added: “The Kaleidoscope Garden has been a cherished space for our families and staff since it was created, and we are so grateful to Greenfingers Charity and Smart Garden Products for their continued support. These volunteer days are not just about maintaining the garden; they’re about creating moments of joy and peace for those who spend time here.

“As well as the children enjoying sensory experiences, the peaceful garden can also be a tranquil haven for parents to reflect. Whether it is sitting on one of the gardens various benches with family to calm themselves after a busy day or restless night or discovering areas that have strategic planting in a secluded corner to enable them to sit by themselves, there is opportunity for all to enjoy this outside space.”

Hannah Jones, Nursery Nurse at Helen & Douglas House said “Our garden is such a magical place. We are lucky to have such a fantastic place to be able to take the children out and enjoy the sunshine.

“Our children love being out in the garden smelling the different flowers and listening to the trees in the wind. They have fun watering the flowers and grass and love to relax near the new water features. It is amazing having such a safe and beautiful garden right on our doorstep to read stories, play football, or just relax in the sun with the children and their families is just incredible."

The Greenfingers Charity thanks Arbour Landscape Solutions

The Greenfingers Charity is grateful for the generosity and dedication of its many supporters. Today, the spotlight is on Arbour Landscape Solutions, whose commitment over the years has made a real difference.

The Greenfingers Charity is grateful for the generosity and dedication of its many supporters. Without them, the charity simply couldn’t continue its vital work creating magical gardens for life-limited children and their families. When supporters go above and beyond, it’s only right to celebrate their efforts. Today, the spotlight is on Arbour Landscape Solutions, whose commitment over the years has made a real difference.

Most recently, Arbour Landscape Solutions made a donation of unwanted stock, divided into two invaluable contributions. Paving materials were donated to the upcoming Kitchen Garden at the Chestnut Tree Hospice in Arundel, designed by Fisher Tomlin & Bowyer. This new garden space will provide fresh produce for the hospice kitchen, serve as a learning space for children, support the ‘Dad’s Club,’ and offer a tranquil area for families. Work begins on this exciting project next month, with completion set for mid-summer. The remainder of the donation was auctioned by the Greenfingers Charity’s auction partners, W&H Peacocks, raising £2,656 for the charity.

Arbour Landscape Solutions’ commitment goes beyond material donations, however. The company has provided financial support through a scheme linked to online sales, ensuring that a percentage of every order contributes to the Greenfingers fundraising total. Customers also see the Greenfingers logo prominently displayed on each of Arbour’s online product pages, ensuring that at every touchpoint the charity is front and centre.

Arbour Landscape Solutions will also continue using its digital platforms to raise awareness of the Greenfingers Charity. Through social media updates, blog posts, and dedicated content, the company ensures that Greenfingers’ mission reaches a wider audience.

Speaking about the partnership, Anna Roochove from Arbour Landscape Solutions said: “Arbour Landscape Solutions is proud to support the Greenfingers Charity, as its work resonates deeply with the team. The power of gardens to provide respite during the most challenging times is, without doubt, hugely valuable. As parents, the team truly appreciates the impact Greenfingers has, and they are delighted to play a part in supporting such a worthwhile cause.”

Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising & Communications at Greenfingers Charity, added: “We are so grateful to Arbour Landscape Solutions for their ongoing commitment to support our work. They have shown that even the smallest details can make a big impact, and their thoughtfulness in every aspect of their support is truly inspiring. From financial contributions to raising awareness and donating materials, their involvement helps to ensure we continue to create beautiful, therapeutic gardens for children in hospices and their families. We cannot thank them enough.”

MorePeople celebrates 25 years of business

April 2025 marks a significant milestone for specialist recruitment business MorePeople as it celebrates 25 years of success in the food, fresh produce, horticulture, and agriculture industries...

April 2025 marks a significant milestone for specialist recruitment business MorePeople as it celebrates 25 years of success in the food, fresh produce, horticulture, and agriculture industries.

Founded in 2000 by Guy Moreton and Peter Hunt, MorePeople has grown into a trusted name in recruitment, helping businesses across its specialist sectors find top talent at all levels. Reflecting on the journey, founder Guy Moreton shares, “Creating a business that has lasted 25 years is something I’m immensely proud of. When we started, we hoped to be successful, but we never knew for certain. MorePeople has evolved, but our core values have remained the same—providing a great service, building strong relationships, and making a genuine impact in our industry.”

The recruitment landscape has changed dramatically since MorePeople’s inception with the rise of digital platforms .“When we first started, we were using fax machines and receiving CVs by post! Now, everything, naturally, is online—from job boards to LinkedIn and AI-driven recruitment tools,” says Moreton.

Like any long-standing business, over the years, MorePeople has navigated major challenges, including the 2008 recession and the COVID-19 pandemic. “COVID was a particularly tough time, with businesses shutting down and job offers being cancelled. However, the resilience of the food industry meant we were able to bounce back,” Moreton recalls.

One of the company’s biggest achievements has been its ability to provide comprehensive recruitment services across multiple functions within its specialist sectors. “Our vision was always to offer more than just recruitment—to be a trusted partner that businesses could rely on for all their hiring needs,” says Moreton.

A defining moment for MorePeople was when it became recognised as an industry thought leader, with team members being invited to speak at key sector events, which has only grown from there. “When we started getting asked to contribute to conferences, we knew we were making an impact. Seeing our team share insights at industry events today is a testament to the expertise we’ve built,” Moreton adds.

MorePeople’s leadership team has been instrumental in driving the company forward. Andrew Fitzmaurice joined the business in 2010 and was made CEO and shareholder in January 2022. Managing Director Richard Hanwell joined the business in January 2021 and became shareholder in 2023. Their leadership has been key to the company’s continued growth and success.

Andrew comments, “As we celebrate 25 years of growth and success, I reflect on the incredible journey we’ve had. When I joined the business in 2010, we had just a small team of 8 passionate individuals. Today, we’re 38 dedicated professionals. What we’ve achieved so far is a testament to the hard work, innovation, and commitment of everyone who has been part of our story. But this is just the beginning. Our vision for the future is even brighter, and with our expanding team and continued focus on excellence, I’m excited to see where we can go next. The best is yet to come.”

Looking ahead, MorePeople remains committed to its core values of exceptional service, sector expertise, and innovation. “The last 25 years have been exhilarating, relentless, and an amazing journey. I still love recruitment as much as I did when we started, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds,” concludes Moreton.

MD Richard comments, “25 years in business is an achievement in its own right, considering the time periods that the business has had to navigate through. Having joined the business in 2021, I have had the privilege of riding the purple wave that Guy, Pete and Andy had already built, but even since then, we have built the team and business considerably and now have in place both a structure and vision to supersede our already impressive growth. MorePeople has always stood out to me and continues to impress me in the way in which we fully embed ourselves into the industries that we support, which has been our ethos for 25 years.”

As MorePeople celebrates this milestone, the team extends its gratitude to clients, candidates, and industry partners who have been part of the journey. Here’s to the next 25 years of making a difference in recruitment.

Glee, in partnership with GIMA, has confirmed that a record-breaking number of exhibitors have already secured their space within the GIMA Business Village at Glee 2025 (16th-18th September, NEC Birmingham).

This dedicated showcase for GIMA members is experiencing unprecedented demand, reflecting the growing recognition of the association’s value among both established and emerging brands across the garden, home, DIY, and peripheral markets.

The GIMA Business Village has long been a central hub within Glee, providing a launchpad for innovative brands and a crucial networking space for industry professionals. One of the key factors behind its continued success is the unique opportunity it offers for businesses to exhibit with the support of GIMA, enabling them to gain exposure, build connections, and benefit from expert guidance in a highly visible and collaborative setting.

The rapid expansion of GIMA’s membership is also contributing to this momentum, as more brands recognise the value of aligning with the association. Companies within and beyond the garden industry are increasingly leveraging GIMA’s extensive network, business support services, and industry expertise to drive growth and visibility.

A standout feature of the GIMA Business Village at Glee is the hugely popular GIMA Hosted Meetings. These highly effective, pre-arranged networking sessions offer suppliers direct access to influential buyers, fostering meaningful business relationships and unlocking new sales opportunities.

Matthew Mein, Glee Event Director, commented: “We are thrilled to see such a strong response to the GIMA Business Village at Glee 2025. The record-breaking exhibitor numbers are a testament to the strength of our partnership with GIMA and the vital role this dedicated area plays in supporting new and established businesses alike. With the continued success of the GIMA Hosted Meetings and the invaluable resources GIMA provides, the Business Village remains an essential hub for industry growth and collaboration.”

Vicky Nuttall, GIMA Director, added: “The fact that we are seeing such unprecedented demand for space within the GIMA Business Village is a clear indication of the value that GIMA brings to its members. Our expanding membership base and the increasing recognition of the support we offer are driving this growth. Exhibiting alongside likeminded businesses, with GIMA’s guidance and the added benefit of initiatives like the GIMA Hosted Meetings, ensures that our members gain the maximum return from their presence at Glee.”

Durstons’ peat-free range outshines leading brands in trials

Durstons independently tested and trialled the formulations from their exciting new range to ensure they would deliver a reliable and repeatable positive growing experience for gardeners… and the results did not disappoint...

Durstons independently tested and trialled the formulations from their exciting new range to ensure they would deliver a reliable and repeatable positive growing experience for gardeners… and the results did not disappoint.

Within the trials, overseen by peat-free expert Simon Blackhurst (SJBQC Ltd), Durstons’ brand-new peat-free Multi-Purpose Compost:

  • achieved over 70% bigger plants than a professional peat-reduced product on the market
  • outperformed both peat and peat-free competitor products on the market
  • increased blooms by 50%

Another stand out in the trials was their new peat-free Tub & Basket Compost, which:

  • achieved over 150% bigger plants than a professional peat-reduced product
  • outperformed both peat-based and peat-free competitors on the market
  • increased blooms by 50%

Durstons’ remarkable new collection of composts is formulated using their unique additives, Gro Boost and Gro Fibre – revolutionary ingredients that are exclusive to Durstons in the UK – and enhanced with a nutrient package that provides 14 vital nutrients plus feed that lasts up to 3-4 months.

Top-performing ingredients

Some gardeners can be put off by the appearance of peat-free growing media and the inconsistency in terms of texture. This isn’t something you need to worry about with the Durstons range. The great thing about incorporating Gro Fibre, which is made from a single species of pine, is that it helps create a consistently fluffy compost that won’t shrink or slump. Gardeners will find it a pleasure to use!

Gro Fibre also supports moisture retention and doesn’t lock nutrients, like some other peat-free growing media on the market. The end result is a compost that delivers a reliably impressive performance, year in, year out!

Meanwhile, Gro Boost is made from high quality composted materials and produced locally at Durstons’ site. It has a strong water holding capacity, boasts a beneficial microbiological profile together with both major and minor nutrients, is 100% natural and renewable, and is vegan friendly.

The result is an outstanding peat-free compost that provides better air space and greater moisture availability, enabling plants to establish strong roots, quickly.

Outshining competitor products

The ability of Durstons’ peat-free range to deliver consistently impressive results and easily outperform competitor products is a huge win for gardeners looking for a reliable way to grow successfully without peat.

Discussing the trials, ‘compost connoisseur’ Simon Blackhurst said: “One of the biggest problems with peat-free is nutrient availability, with Nitrogen often becoming ‘locked up’ and, therefore, not available to the plant when the compost is used. However, this is not an issue with Durstons’ new peat-free range, thanks to the patented process used to produce Gro Fibre.

“The composts performed exceptionally well in the trials, and the inclusion of Gro Fibre made a significant contribution. The use of a single species of tree means Durstons are able to offer a consistent raw material, whereas some other brands are reliant on several different supply chains, which can cause variability in stability, chemical profile and fibre size. Durstons are extremely excited about the results of the trials and the range they have formulated.”

Durstons Director, Dan Durston said: “We are delighted with the findings of the tests and growing trials, and it just confirms our confidence in this new range. For years now we have been committed to helping gardeners move away from peat by providing them with a compost they can rely on and enjoy using. We can promise consistency in terms of texture, appearance and results, and we think gardeners are going to love it!

“We knew we had created something exciting with this new peat-free collection and we are not surprised it outperformed other products on the market. This range is guaranteed to build confidence in peat free and help gardeners achieve real success with their growing endeavours.”

A little bit of science…

Nitrogen lock-up is a major issue with many peat-free composts on the market due to natural decomposition of wood-based raw materials via microbes in the substrate. Their life cycle locks Nitrogen, which is then not available to the plant when the compost is used. Some products now claim to use ‘stabilised’ wood fibres to prevent this, but industry experts are still seeing nutrient deficiencies in mixes.

Wiggly Wigglers will bring its award-winning composting kits to life at the Farm Shop & Deli Show 2025...

Wiggly Wigglers will bring its award-winning composting kits to life at the Farm Shop & Deli Show 2025.

Wiggly Wigglers, the Herefordshire-based farm that's been championing home composting for over 30 years, is really pleased to announce that two of its flagship products—the Wiggly Wigglers LIVE Bokashi Kit and Wiggly Wigglers Compact Worm Farm—have won GOLD in the 2025 Farm Shop & Deli Product Awards.

And now, we're bringing the magic LIVE to the Farm Shop & Deli Show at the NEC, with a stand (K311)  that’s very much alive. Expect to see thousands of wriggly worms and millions of hard-working microbes in action, chomping their way through kitchen waste and turning it into rich, garden-boosting compost. It's the ultimate showcase of how independent retailers can offer customers something that’s practical, sustainable, and genuinely brilliant.

Why It Matters

With food waste on everyone’s radar and more customers wanting to live sustainably, home composting is booming—and Wiggly Wigglers is leading the charge with easy-to-use kits made right here on our family farm.

  • The Wiggly Bokashi Kit ferments all food waste—including meat, dairy and cooked scraps—smell-free, fast, and fuss-free.
  • The Wiggly Worm Farm takes things a step further, turning raw fruit and veg peelings into the finest worm casts and liquid fertiliser you’ll ever lay your hands on.

Together, they offer customers a simple, effective route to zero waste and healthier soil—and they offer retailers a golden opportunity. Positioned in farm shops or garden centres (especially near the veg section), these kits don’t just sell products—they tell a bigger story about sustainability, the circular economy, and using waste wisely.

Wiggly Wigglers isn’t just a supplier—we’re farmers, and we make our live Bokashi bran right here on the farm, using our own systems and expertise. We support retailers all the way—with staff training, point-of-sale materials, and content that gets customers excited about composting.

Our stand will be alive with composting in real time—a mini ecosystem of worms, microbes, and food scraps in full flow. Whether you’re new to composting or already part of the movement, this is the perfect chance to see what makes Wiggly Wigglers kits a standout success—and to find out how they can boost your sales, sustainability creds, and customer loyalty.

Air-Pot helps boost native plant growth and biodiversity in Wales

The British-made Air-Pot container has been chosen by the horticultural experts running a project in Wales to help enrich the country’s native tree and plant populations and boost biodiversity...

The British-made Air-Pot container has been chosen by the horticultural experts running a project in Wales to help enrich the country’s native tree and plant populations and boost biodiversity.

The initiative in Denbighshire involves a team at a 70-acre tree nursery, a council-owned farm in St Asaph that became a nursery in 2022, harvesting seeds and growing on plants.

Marketing & Sales Representative at Air-Pot® in Edinburgh, Georgie Single says: “We’re delighted that our Air-Pot containers have been instrumental in this innovative Welsh Government-funded project. The nursery at Green Gates Farm has already produced around 40,000 native trees and wildflowers with the help of a small volunteer team and has room to grow up to 300,000 more plants. They harvest seeds from ancient and veteran trees mostly from Denbighshire Council land and also from National Trust properties.

“Our Air-Pot systems were chosen for the programme as they focus on root establishment and ensuring healthier, more fibrous rootstock. Optimum results were Denbighshire’s motivating factor.

“They found survival rates were better with our Air-Pot® grown plants. Plus, the small team doesn’t always have time for potting up which, when using standard containers leads to the risk of spiralling, but not in ours.”

The Air-Pot container is specifically designed to prevent root circling when needed, so they therefore provide a highly effective solution.

Liam Blazey, Chief Biodiversity Officer for Denbighshire Council, explains: “Currently, sadly, there’s very little biodiversity left in the UK. It ranks 189th out of 218 countries, so from a biodiversity perspective, we’re poor.

“Our project aims to restock some lost species and boost populations that are currently here. The life supported by trees is amazing. While we’ve initially focused on broad leaf trees with Welsh provenance, we’ve also found some rarer trees like Sorbus torminalis, commonly known as Wild Service, Black Poplar and Juniper.

“A single tree is an entire ecosystem and, once it’s planted out, it will live for more than 100 years and the amount of life you can get from that is incredible.

“For us, using Air-Pot containers was all about the health of the plants and the sustainability they offer. They are re-usable many times over with no noticeable wear and tear, and the resulting plants, when planted out, are better able to cope with challenging growing conditions due to the superior root systems they have developed.

“Plus, they allow us to operate an easy maintenance programme depending on when we have volunteers to assist us and they help us grow healthier plants by ensuring healthy roots with no circling. They stack well on tables with spacing between them too. We’re now inviting other councils in Wales to see what we’re doing to encourage them to set-up their own projects and nurseries too.”

The shape of the Air-Pot container’s wall guides each root towards an air hole where increased air in the growing medium dehydrates the tip, pruning it and stimulating root branching. The process repeats until there is a mass of healthy fibrous roots.

Georgie adds: “Healthy roots mean faster growth and the better uptake of nutrients and water.

“We manufacture with the minimum possible environmental impact. Central to this is our use of recycled plastic. Made from recycled HDPE, our Air-Pot containers are sturdy and reusable many times over, even in intense sunshine, and some of our customers have the same pot they have been reusing for 10 to 15 years.”

James  Gormley who has a strong background in arboriculture and tree sales has been appointed as the new Key Account Manager for Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford.

James, who previously worked with well-respected tree growers in the industry, will be assisting local authority sectors, as well as both landscape architects and contractors, with technical sales.

Kersten Catella, Sales Director at Wyevale Nurseries, says: “I’m really pleased to welcome James to the Wyevale Nurseries’ team. From our first conversation, it was clear he brings real energy with his deep-rooted passion for trees and biodiversity, exactly the kind of focus that adds real value to our customers.

His passion for tree biodiversity drives him to understand tree planting that is in line with the UK’s environmental goals. This includes:

Garden Centre Magazine – your personalised magazine, free of charge

Already enjoyed by over 100 garden centres across the UK, the Garden Centre Magazine (GCM) is a unique opportunity to create a bespoke, professionally designed magazine within a magazine – at no cost to your business.

Each participating garden centre receives a dedicated 12-page personalised section within the wider publication, enabling them to showcase their latest news, promotions, staff profiles, restaurant menus, special events, seasonal offers, and more. With the potential to reach up to 50 pages in total, this high-quality, glossy publication serves as a powerful marketing and customer engagement tool.

No financial investment – fully funded by advertisers

Unlike traditional marketing initiatives, the Garden Centre Magazine requires no financial outlay from garden centres. Instead, the magazine is fully funded through advertisers and advertorial content, ensuring that your centre benefits from premium marketing materials without stretching your budget.

Simply host the publication in high-footfall areas such as entrances and tills, allowing customers to pick up a copy and stay connected with your latest offerings. With centre-specific content refreshed every six months, the magazine remains dynamic and relevant, encouraging repeat engagement and customer loyalty.

More than just a magazine – a community connector

The Garden Centre Magazine is designed not only to promote your garden centre but also to strengthen ties within the local community.

By incorporating features on topics such as garden lighting, pet care, and seasonal trends, the magazine creates natural opportunities for local businesses to advertise alongside engaging editorial content. For example, an article on ‘garden lighting’ may include adverts from local electricians, while a ‘pet care’ feature could highlight dog groomers, vets, and pet insurance providers. This strategic approach ensures that advertisers receive maximum visibility while readers discover valuable local services.

Extending reach beyond the shopfloor

Many customers share copies with friends and family, further increasing brand exposure and footfall.

By providing expert home and garden tips, GCM is a publication that customers actively want to pick up, engage with and keep, in turn enhancing your brand’s credibility and fostering stronger customer relationships.

A no-risk, high-reward opportunity for garden centres

With zero financial commitment required, GCM represents a hassle-free, high-impact marketing solution. By participating, your garden centre gains a professionally produced, high-quality magazine that serves as both a sales tool and a relationship builder within your local community.

For more information on how your garden centre can get involved and join the likes of New Leaf Plant Centre, Old Railway Line, Grove Nurseries, Monkton Elm, Polhill, Planters and many others who already benefit from the inclusion of the Garden Centre Magazine within their centre, please contact the GCM’s Business Development Director, Trish Nicholson by emailing patricia@yhgmedia.co.uk

Novelties May inspection announced

The first entries for the new product inspection by PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt have arrived...

The first entries for the new product inspection by PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt have arrived. In any case, a new Scabiosa, three new Geraniums, a Hydrangea and a Rosa will compete for the Green Retail Award. Growers can submit new plant varieties for inspection until the end of April, with a chance to win the Best Novelty Award May 2025.

Novelty presentation

The new products can be viewed on 19 May (from 7.30 a.m. to 8 p.m.) and on 20 May (from 7.30 a.m. to 12 p.m.) during the GROEN-Direkt Mid-Season Days in Hazerswoude. The novelties will be clearly presented on the exhibition's main square, complete with any medals. On 19 May, the PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt Green Retail Award for Best Novelty May 2025 will be presented.

International attention

The official inspection will be carried out by the expert jury of the Royal Boskoop Horticultural Association (KVBC). This additional judging moment – last year in June, now moved to May – offers growers and breeders the chance to put their spring novelties in the spotlight. This does not only happen on the GROEN-Direkt floor, but also in the international press beforehand.

Registration until 30 April at the latest

Registration for the competition is open until 30 April, but the sooner you register, the more attention your new product will receive through the trade media and online communication channels. You can register via the PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt website.

The first entries to compete for this internationally recognised title are:

Scabiosa columbaria 'Lier 01' (LAURIE)

Is a compact and long-flowering Scabiosa with deep blue flowers that remain upright and do not drop. This new variety stands out for its exceptionally long flowering period – from May until the first frost – and its compact growth habit, which is not only visually appealing but also offers logistical advantages for transport and display.

Compared to well-known varieties like 'Butterfly Blue', LAURIE stays lower and denser, making it an excellent choice for both retail and landscaping purposes. This Scabiosa columbaria mutant also performs very well in warmer climates.

The plant was bred by W. and M. Lier-Gielens MTS from Meijel and will be available on the market from 2025 through Kientzler Jungpflanzen and Van Lier-Gielens. Plant breeder's rights have been applied for. Van Vliet New Plants BV from Stroe has submitted this variety for novelty evaluation.

Geranium sanguineum FRIVOLIUS series
The FRIVOLIUS series of Geranium sanguineum, developed by Marco Van Noort Breeding of Warmond, consists of strong, healthy garden geraniums with remarkably large flowers, fresh green to dark green leaves and a compact, spreading but not rampant habit. All cultivars flower richly and long-lasting, are suitable for borders, landscaping and container cultivation, and have been marketed through Vitroflora and Allplant since 2023. The series is protected by plant breeders' rights and is also distinguished by good drought tolerance and strong visual appeal thanks to its contrasting leaf and flower colour.

FRIVOLIUS PURPLE (‘MVNG1905’)

This cultivar stands out for its intense dark cerise-purple flowers and particularly early flowering. The fresh dark green foliage contrasts beautifully with the deep purple hue of the flowers.

FRIVOLIUS LILAC (‘MVNG1901’)

This variety is characterised by its pretty lilac-pink flowers. FRIVOLIUS LILAC forms a groundcover carpet without a rampant character, making it very suitable for both gardens and public green spaces.

FRIVOLIUS PINK (‘MVNG1811’)

This selection is distinguished by its large pink flowers and early, long-lasting flowering. The bright green leaves and strong drought resistance make it ideal for a variety of garden and landscape projects.

Hydrangea paniculata 'HYLV19557' (GARDENLIGHTS LITTLELIGHT)

Is a compact, hardy, and low-maintenance panicle hydrangea that stands out for its elegance and simplicity. This new introduction is remarkable for its unique flowering habit: a sea of white to cream-colored flowers that form a dense floral carpet, well supported by strong, self-supporting branches. Flowering begins in June and continues into September, providing long-lasting ornamental value in any garden. Thanks to its neat, compact growth, GARDENLIGHTS LITTLELIGHT fits perfectly into modern gardens and smaller outdoor spaces.

The plant was bred from seedling by Lendert de Vos BV in Reeuwijk and will be marketed from 2025 by Leybaert BV from Lokeren, Belgium. Plant breeder's rights have been granted.

Rosa 'Visedabal' (PETIT SOLEIL)

Is a compact, bushy rose that adds a vibrant touch to any garden, balcony, or terrace throughout the season. Its small, single, bright yellow flowers resemble little suns and form a striking contrast with the glossy light green foliage. PETIT SOLEIL blooms abundantly from spring through autumn and is highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. In autumn, decorative red hips appear, adding an extra splash of colour and providing a feast for birds.

As a member of the Naturosa family, this non-grafted rose is known for its exceptional health, strong resistance to pests and diseases, and excellent climate resilience. These qualities make PETIT SOLEIL a sustainable choice for both home gardeners and professional landscaping projects.

The variety was bred by Viva International – Martin Vissers and will be commercially available from 2025 through Meer Plant BV from Meer/Hoogstraten, Belgium. Plant breeder's rights are pending.

August next inspection

The novelty inspection in May is organised by PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt. A novelty inspection and presentation will also take place during the next PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt trade fair on 27 and 28 August. During this edition, there will also be awards for Best Market Innovation for new concepts and brands and a Visitors' Favorite for immediately available product innovations.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has announced a partnership with homeware, kitchenware and accessories brand Sophie Allport for its 2025 RHS Chelsea Flower Show collection. The show takes place from 20-24 May 2025.

This exclusive RHS-licensed collection offers customers a range of limited-edition memorabilia that celebrates all things RHS Chelsea Flower Show. This year’s range has been expanded to celebrate the official partnership and includes a mug (available in standard and large sizes), a small tray, a cotton tea towel, a signed print and a cotton tote bag.

Appropriately enough, the 2025 design draws inspiration from company founder Sophie Allport’s love of English cottage gardens. Bursting with beautiful florals, including alliums, sweet peas, foxgloves, and bearded irises, it features a charming vegetable patch, a greenhouse brimming with homegrown goodness, and a picturesque shepherd’s hut as its centrepiece.

Adding a playful touch are Sophie’s illustrations of a Jack Russell, a Golden Retriever and a Yorkshire Terrier – a nod to this year’s much-anticipated RHS and BBC Radio 2 Dog Garden. This dog-friendly space is the first garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show to be designed by BBC Gardeners’ World presenter Monty Don.

The 2025 edition will include the RHS logo on packaging and swing tags as well as the words ‘RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025’ on all products.

Since 2010 the RHS Chelsea Flower Show has played a significant role in the Sophie Allport narrative. Each year Sophie Allport unveils a highly sought-after collection to commemorate this world-famous event, a show that draws in 168,000 visitors from across the globe. Millions more follow the show on television and online.

The Sophie Allport RHS Chelsea Flower Show collection will be available to purchase at the Sophie Allport stand during the show and online at www.sophieallport.com

To celebrate the opening of their new kitchen, bakery and extended food retailing area Thetford Garden Centre held a Celebration of Food on Friday evening, 28th March 2025, which included the first ever “Unlimited Cake Club” event.

Over 90 tickets were sold for the event in The Lime Kiln Kitchen where attendees were greeted with a warm salad, either Chicken Ceaser or Roasted Vegetables, unlimited tea or coffee plus the highlight of the evening: unlimited visits to the cake counter.  At the counter they were served by Thetford’s new baker, Charlotte, who had baked all of the cakes on offer for the evening.

Lucy Nixon told GTN Xtra: “The tickets for tonight’s event are the fastest selling tickets for an event we’ve ever held.  I’m sure we could have sold double if we’d had room for them.”

Head of Food at Thetford, James, said “Our main aim for the evening is to showcase our new bakery with all our cakes now baked in house and an extended range.  This is part one of our food developments, later this year we will be adding a patisserie and then next year we will be baking and selling our own food products in the retail food area.”

After over 40 years in the gardening and leisure industry (over 33 years of which have been as director general of Gardenex and PetQuip), Amanda Sizer Barrett will be retiring from the Federation on Monday (31 March). The new director general will be Joe Denham, managing director of DogDoov, who will take over on Tuesday (1 April).

Amanda’s career in the industry started as a business journalist at Link House Publications Ltd, covering the garden and DIY sectors. Following her promotion to editor, she was responsible for reporting on the industry and retail news within the gardening, DIY and housewares sectors and got to know the majority of businesses, trade exhibitions and retailers within this rapidly changing business environment.

She was then headhunted to head up Gardenex and to expand its services and was also heavily involved in the launch of the Garden Products Association which subsequently merged with GIMA. Over the years she has been working in the industry, she introduced the very popular ‘meet the buyer’ events, now adopted by many other associations; established an export technical helpline to support exporters during and following the navigation of BREXIT; created unique promotional and exhibition opportunities at venues in countries from Austria to Japan; organised international trade conferences and introduced a raft of specialised support services, with the help of her expert team.

She was also instrumental in launching PetQuip, the trade association for the pet care product sector which provides similar services to those of Gardenex to firms in this expanding industry.

During Amanda’s tenure, the federation has also taken on the running of the secretariats for the Commercial Horticultural Association, and then GIMA.

For her work in promoting and developing exports, Amanda was awarded an MBE.

“I have loved working in the gardening and pet product sectors, which are full of innovation and feature some inspiring entrepreneurs and wonderful personalities. I would like to thank everyone I’ve worked with and alongside over the many years I have been privileged to be part of these exciting and dynamic industries”.

Amanda has been working with the board of the Federation to ensure a smooth handover to the new Director General, Joe Denham, who will take over as Director on 1 April.

“Amanda has built an extensive knowledge of the UK’s gardening and pet product sectors and international retailing,” says Director Joe Denham. “On behalf of myself, the board of directors and everyone within the Federation, its member companies, the Gardenex and PetQuip team and all the valuable connections she has made over the years she has worked in this industry, we would like to thank Amanda for everything she has done to help and support UK suppliers, exhibition organisers and international retailers to expand their businesses in the UK and internationally during her many years of  service to the federation.”

David Domoney champions Young Talent in Horticulture with Live Garden Makeover on This Morning

Following the success of four heartwarming and inspiring Front Garden Facelifts in 2024, David Domoney is back with ITV’s This Morning for the first live makeover of 2025. Following the success of four heartwarming and inspiring Front Garden Facelifts in 2024, David Domoney is back with ITV’s This Morning for the first live makeover of 2025. And once again, David has used the opportunity to inspire young people in horticulture, inviting students from Shuttleworth College to participate.

In all five Front Garden Facelifts since March 2024, David has welcomed horticulture students from Sheffield College, the Lackham Campus of Wiltshire College and University Centre, Moulton College, Hadlow College, and now, Shuttleworth College.

David has long championed encouraging young people to enter the horticulture industry and sees these live makeovers as a unique opportunity to inspire, educate, and showcase the valuable skills the next generation brings to the sector. By involving students hands-on, he hopes to plant the seeds of passion and confidence that will grow into lifelong careers.

David said:"Involving students in these makeovers gives them real-world experience and a sense of pride in their work. I’ve always believed in nurturing young talent through projects like my Young Gardeners of the Year. These opportunities help build confidence, practical skills, and a genuine love for horticulture—essential for growing the future of our industry."

RHS Course Lead at Shuttleworth College, Peter Lickorish, stated: “For me, a great opportunity like this embodies what we do at Shuttleworth, where we hope to transform people, giving them the chance to do something they wouldn’t normally do, taking up horticulture, either as a hobby or as an industry. And a day like today, where the students worked so hard under the pressure of time, TV, weather and more, just shows how resilient they are. They’ve really done us proud.”

David and his team of volunteers were live from Milton Keynes to transform the garden of Carole Kirton.

The transformation began live at 10am, as Dermot O’Leary and Josie Gibson introduced David knocking on Carole’s front door. What followed was a whirlwind day of digging, planting, painting, and celebrating.

Carole, 65, was nominated by her youngest daughter, Samantha, as a heartfelt thank you for years of love. Samantha was joined by her two older sisters, Linda and Lisa, for the emotional surprise.

After marrying her late husband Alan when they were just 16, Carole spent the last 18 years of Alan’s life as his dedicated carer, whilst he was living with Parkinson’s and dementia until his passing in July 2024. She now shares her home with her daughter Linda and loyal collie, Misty.

Over 5 million people in England and Wales identified as carers in the 2021 Census, with many, like Carole, caring for Alan, supporting loved ones with dementia, Parkinson’s, or other disabilities. Carers play an honourable and vital role, often providing emotional comfort, medication, mobility support, and help with daily routines.

Support came from all corners. Blue Diamond’s Frosts Garden Centre donated a beautiful range of plants and sent two expert staff to help bring the garden to life. Meanwhile, students from Shuttleworth College offered their time and skills, working closely with David throughout the day.

When time was called on the makeover after less than 2 hours, David escorted Carole around her new front garden. The planting scheme was designed with heartfelt symbolism. Shades of blue in the wall planters paid tribute to her beloved husband, Alan, whilst the pink blooms of the statuesque Indian Hawthorn ‘Baby Pink’ were chosen to honour Carole’s late mother, June, who passed away in March 2024, whose favourite colour was pink. Carole was thrilled to see the front of her home and garage door freshly repainted, and a lovely bench with a heartfelt message from her daughters engraved on a plaque.

David said: “These makeovers wouldn’t be possible without the help of our fantastic volunteers and contributors. I’d like to pass on my gratitude to Blue Diamond Garden Centres. Shuttleworth College from the Bedford College Group, Tillers Turf, Ames Tools, The Fun Blue Plaque Company, MBT Decorating, The Lazor Boutique, ITV Shop, Hippo Bags and Horwood House Hotel. It was an honour to create, alongside all these wonderful volunteers, a lovely garden for Carole, today was our way of giving something meaningful back to someone who has given so much to others.”

Carole’s garden makeover carries the powerful message that behind every front door is a story worth celebrating. This Morning is planning for David Domoney to do more Front Garden Facelifts, transforming front garden spaces into spaces to be proud of.

The GIMA Annual General Meeting saw the association welcome new members and re-elect others, whilst also celebrating another year of growth, standing the organisation in good stead as it navigates 2025 and beyond.

Sarah Hill, Managing Director of Meadow View Stone and Nigel Thompson from Sipcam Home & Garden joined the Council as full members, while votes from members confirmed the re-election of Jenny Douthwaite from Primeur.

Capi’s Kate Ebbens, re-elected for a second consecutive term as GIMA President, addressed attendees, expressing her thanks for their input, passion, and dedication. “I want to thank all the nominees for stepping forward to join the Council, especially Jenny, Nigel, and Sarah – congratulations!
