Tributes to Peter Seabrook who died on Friday 14th January

Peter Seabrook MBE, died suddenly on Friday 14th January 2022.  It is reported he suffered a heart attack at home.

Read the report in The Sun here.

and Mondays article:  Inside Sun gardening guru Peter Seabrook’s incredible life from royal fans to tending to Barbara Windsor’s window boxes

Its been a sad day today with the news coming early on about Peter's sudden death.  We understand he hadn't been ill and was working with his usual haste but suffered a heart attack at home.

I'm sure the news has saddened many in horticulture and the garden industry.  He will be sorely missed as a champion for new plants, for down to earth gardening and his unbounded enthusiasm for everything that is good about horticulture and gardening.  Peter always had time for people, and typically at press events he always asked the most perceptive and difficult questions, but always in a very pleasant way.

All in the world of gardening media will be grateful for his role in setting up the Garden Writers Guild that became the Garden Media Guild.  In particular, Peter wanted all freelance and salaried journalists to have a voice and to celebrate their success via the Garden Media Guild Awards. Peter we thank you for that.

I last saw Peter at the Westland Press Day in November 2021 where the subject of peat and peat replacements were talked about earnestly as you can imagine.  He was on good form, asking pointed questions of the Westland team.  We all enjoyed his company for the day.

More recently I corresponded and spoke about the Open Letter on Peat which has generated so much coverage about issues Peter passionately felt were being ignored.  Peter, I'll do everything I can to keep those issues on the agenda so that we get a full and proper story for the industry and all gardeners about growing media.  All you wanted was for people to grow and enjoy beautiful plants and bountiful harvests!

Thank you for all the support and encouragement you have given me over many years.

In haste... Trevor Pfeiffer.

Tribute to Peter Seabrook from Perrywood Garden Centre

Peter was always keen to hunt out the next high performing plant variety, so would always quiz Alan about what we were growing, and mention several recommendations of his own in return. His passion for plants was evident to all who met him.

Peter once worked for Cramphorn’s on Newton Road in Sudbury, which three years ago came into our ownership and is now Perrywood Sudbury.

He came along to our first anniversary party and shared his stories of working on the site, telling us he used cycle to work from Chelmsford, a four to five hour round trip! We will miss his dedication to the industry, his support for Perrywood, his floral fantasia displays at RHS Hyde Hall, his ties, his notebook and his smile.

‘UNTIL NEXT TIME’

Legendary Sun gardening guru Peter Seabrook dies aged 86

I received the sad news on Sunday that Peter Seabrook MBE had died of a heart attack on

Friday 14th January.

Peter was a great supporter of the RHS Horticulture Unit at Pershore High School and gave advice, support and wonderful opportunities such as the RHS Chelsea Flower to students both past and present and made a surprise visit to RHS Wisley when Kristian Foxley got through to the finals of RHS Young School Gardener of the Year to give his support.

Staff who were at the school in 2018 will remember him for his wonderful talk at Presentation Evening. He was a wonderful kind man who was my inspiration as a child and became my guru in later years, it was an honour to work with him and he will be sadly missed within the Horticulture Industry.

Anne Watson

Head of Horticulture

Tribute from HTA President Boyd Douglas-Davies

“It was with a heavy heart that I learnt of the passing of Peter Seabrook. He was, without doubt, "Mr Gardening" - the original gardening superhero.

I was fortunate to meet Peter in the early days of my career in Horticulture. The enthusiasm he shared with me 30+ years ago never diminished. He enthralled and educated the public through TV, radio and the written word for decades.

His passion for everything garden related was infectious. He engaged with children as easily as he did with their grand-parents. He had time for all and was never slow to share his opinion.

Many a time I have shared a stage with Peter and been amazed at his unwavering ability to answer any question. His 'readers letters' were legendary and hugely entertaining.

The industry has lost a true champion. A character. A media giant. A knowledge that will be impossible to replace. Above all, we have today lost a friend. Peter RIP”

Boyd Douglas-Davies

I am very sad to hear of Peter Seabrook's death. I have been very privileged to have spent time with Peter when I worked at the HTA. Peter was always a tremendous supporter and would regularly challenge if he thought there were better or different ways of doing things. Peter's enthusiasm and passion for all things horticulture was inspirational & his knowledge incredible. Peter will be much missed. My thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

I was so very sad to learn of the passing of Peter Seabrook. He championed bedding plants and the breeding work done by our members and we worked together on many projects to promote the colour that these flowers bring to any garden large or small. More recently as well as at Chelsea, this was at his beloved Floral Fantasia at RHS Hyde Hall where he could often still be caught digging. He was both an educator and entertainer as a presenter at our conferences and Trevor you and I both have taken part in one or more of his podcasts where he put us at ease with his broadcasting skills. Commercial horticulture, not just in the U.K. but worldwide, will miss one of its greatest ambassadors. RIP Peter.

I had the pleasure of meeting Peter at many trade shows and some local social events and each time his enthusiasm and vigour for the horticulture industry shone through, I was so honoured to be invited to talk on his podcast a few years ago and our business from the very beginning has enjoyed his wealth of knowledge and his precise and thought provoking questions. A true gentleman and a global horticultural legend! Condolences to his family

I find this so difficult to write. What great times we had with you, Peter, building the first ever Sunflower Street Gardens at Wembley in 1993, Boston Massachusetts in 1994 (where we were swamped by your U.S. TV fans - ladies of a certain age) and then for the next three years at Chelsea. You were always on the lookout for every opportunity to promote gardening, particularly with children and came up with the best campaigns. You could be counted on to be a bit controversial at any GCA conference but then lightened the mood by reading some of those delightful letters received from your public. That is all summed up by your passion and enthusiasm for the gardening industry and your boundless energy in whatever you were doing. Somehow you were able to continue like that even when you devoted more and more time to Margaret as her health deteriorated. Thank you for being such a gardening legend, a real supporter of Greenfingers and above all just being a lovely man. It was a privilege to know you. Sue Allen, Millbrook Garden Co. and Greenfingers Chairman

I am very sorry to learn about Peter Seabrook's passing. When my brother and I started our company in 1983 it was Peter who first put us on the TV in his gardening spot on the BBC Pebble Mill at One programme after meeting us at GLEE. Subsequently, as a director of Gardenex, I worked with Peter on the Roy Hay Memorial Award. He was an engaging man and did so much for the Gardening Industry during his long career. I wonder how many new gardeners there are because of his enthusiasm for gardening? Farewell Peter, and thank you for all that you did for so many people.

Another great character gone. I met Peter at many events over the years but the most surprising conversation was on a flight to Amsterdam. We spent almost the whole journey discussing Strictly Come Dancing, he and his wife Margaret loved the routines and as Peter said 'what's not to love with all those pretty dresses, nobody dresses up these days'. RIP Peter from myself and the CHA, the growing community will miss you greatly.
Patrick Smith
a very kind and passionate man. always a pleasure to speak with Peter at GLEE, I salute you sir.

Peter was a long time friend of the family, going back to his early days at Strikes Garden Centres over 40years ago. Always a joy to chat at any of the flower shows. He was always a true gentleman but never afraid to speak his mind. Horticulture has lost one of it champions, he will be greatly missed.

When I first started work at Notcutts in St.Albans in 1978, I used to go home for lunch and the first time I 'encountered' Peter was watching him on TV, gardening in the Pebble Mill at One garden. Through my career I got to meet Peter on many occasions and every time his passion for plants and our industry shone through. Peter was a true gentleman, and a fantastic advocate for the Horticultural Industry, he will be greatly missed

So sorry to hear of Peter's death. He was a stalwart of the horticulture industry. I always enjoyed meeting him at flower shows and trade exhibitions. Helped out on his display at Chelsea a few years ago. He will be much missed. Sincere condolences to Peter's family. Ian Spence

I would walk home from school to Watch Peter Seabrook on Pebble Mill at one in the 70's and of course watch him on Gardeners World, he alongside Percy Thrower, were instrumental in inspiring me to become a horticulturist when I left school at 16. I had the pleasure to connect with him in person in recent years and the man was as passionate, genuine and kind as the man I imagined him to be all those years ago on TV. The industry has lost a knowledgeable communicator for the everyman. Alan Roper
