Phew, what a scorcher!

One good week doesn’t make a summer, but when it’s as good as last week it goes along way. We’ve never seen such a hike in sales week on week in the 8 years of compiling the GTN Bestsellers charts.

Last week’s great weather along with garden centres fully stocked and plantarias looking great generated enough sales to turn a year to date deficit into a year to date upturn. It was the single busiest week in terms of total volume sold in our GTN Bestsellers records.

Thanks to our weekly Garden Plants sales analysis we can report that plant sales were up by 92% week on week. Pelargoniums (that includes all those zonal geraniums etc) doubled their sales to hold onto the No 1 bestselling garden plant. Petunias and Osteospermums increased by almost 250% to move up to numbers 2 and 3.

Rumour is that a notable retailer cancelled a week’s worth of bedding orders as the cold spell continued. I guess they lost their nerve.

As demand for gardening and plants appears to be higher than ever, it’s just a question of the weather having to be right to draw customers into their gardens and garden centres so having a well stocked planteria looking great is a key ingredient of success.

Has the sudden sales increase caused you any supply issues? And which suppliers and growers are providing the best re-stocking service?  Do let us know by email:
