Garden Re-Leaf Day blossomed into a buzzing week of events – some of which are still taking place. Over £57,000 has already been pledged thanks to the creativity and commitment of garden centres, suppliers and dedicated individuals from the garden industry.

24 hour Plant-athons

Current total raised: Over £23,000

Hillview CEO and Greenfingers Trustee Boyd Douglas-Davies came up with yet another original fundraising idea that has so far  raised over £20k for Greenfingers.  Demonstrations on how to pot plants took place as customers watched – and even got involved – with the experts potting on and arranging plants which are now being sold to raise further funds for Greenfingers.  Some exceptional Plant-athon displays took shape with Flora Media producing special labels for each plant pot.

Boyd got his hands dirty with a team from Studley Garden Store (so far raising £3,466 excluding gift aid) that included guest appearances by gardening expert Derick Walker and gardening presenter David Domoney.  https://www.justgiving.com/Boyd-Douglas-Davies

Fryer’s Garden Centre made the most of the PR opportunity the Plant-athon presented, with BBC Radio Manchester and BBC Radio Stoke as well as the local press getting right behind their event. With help from Blue Diamond Managing Director Alan Roper and planted well over 1,200 roses to sell on, raising over £565 excluding gift aid.  Alan has also agreed to donate £10,000 ahead of the plant sales to enable Greenfingers to start creating new hospice gardens immediately.  https://www.justgiving.com/BlueDiamond

Altons Garden Centre’s Andy Bunker orchestrated its Plant-athon which saw local school children and Southend FC Manager, Phil Brown, join in the fun.  Andy’s fundraising efforts resulted in raising over £1,500.  https://www.justgiving.com/pete-lowis

Byrkley Park (part of The Klondyke Group) raised over £6,000 from donations and sales of potted containers.  The group’s chief executive, Bob Hewitt made the front page of his local paper as he planted throughout the night.  Bob also called for the event to take place again calling for 50 garden centres take part next year . https://www.justgiving.com/Bob-Hewitt1

Squire’s split its Plant-athons between two of its stores – Badshot Lea on Thursday 17 March, joined by children from the local primary school - and Twickenham the next day, where Managing Director Dennis Espley was joined by gardening guru Andy McIndoe and the President of Chartered Institute of Horticulture, Andrew Gill.  Squire’s have so far raised £2,358, excluding gift aid. https://www.justgiving.com/squires-24-hour-plant-athon

Flora Media and many other suppliers backed the Plant-athon by supplying labels, pots, plants and composts, all ensuring the event was a great Garden Re-Leaf Day success.

QVC

After Garden Re-Leaf Day had finished, the fundraising and awareness continued over the weekend with presenters Richard Jackson, Craig Rowe,  Michael Perry and Jackie Kabler all helping to raise money from sales of products from suppliers De Jager, Hayloft, Plants2Gardens, Montrose of Guernsey, Thompson & Morgan, Ergo Gardening, Wet and Forget, Growing Solutions, and of course Richard Jackson’s Garden.

‘The Great Garden Re-Leaf Walk’

Current total raised: £9,000

Over 30 people from the garden industry walked 20 miles through the Berkshire countryside on the second annual Garden Re-Leaf walk.

Starting and ending in Theale, home of hosts HTA, walkers tested their endurance by making their way through woodland, farmland and along the Kennet and Avon canal – all raising much needed funds for Greenfingers’ children’s hospice gardens.

There were some interesting extra challenges for some, with GIMA Director Vicky Nuttall putting her dog through it’s paces, and Robbie Cumming from Hornby Whitefoot PR, raising over £500 carrying a hand painted Garden Re-Leaf plank and then stepping off it into the freezing waters of the canal afterwards.

Special thanks to Cadix who raised over £2,000 through its Justgiving page and Chris Houfe from British Cards who raised over £1,000 in cash.  Matthew Mein and the i2i team raised over £1,500 through cakes sales and other fundraising activities in the office with Martin Simmons and the rest of the HTA team so far at £1,185 and counting.

Kelkay Sales Director Richard Pyrah has raised over £500, with Jackie Eades and Sharmini Martini from Briers, GCA Inspector Alyson Hayward, DLF’s Guy Jenkins and Sutton’s Chris Ramsden also adding to the final total.

Quiz: Once again the quiz was a popular choice for garden centres in the South East and Wales, with Millbrook, Longacres, Paradise Park - who also had a loose change collection, BBQ competition and cake sale, Perrywood - who also held a raffle, and the Old Railway Line who had its now famous ‘Curry and Quiz’ as well as a £150 raffle prize donated by Scott’s Miracle Gro.

Cake sale: With the nation’s interest in baking still at it’s peak, garden centres such as Haskins held staff cake sales at Snow Hill, at the head office in Ferndown and at the West End store which singlehandedly raised over £878.  Barton Grange made the most of demand for its afternoon cream teas by donating £5 from each one sold.

Raffles: Still one of the most popular Garden Re-Leaf Day events, raffles were held in various forms by most garden centres, including Monkton Elm who created a vast array of goodies for customers, with £1 raffle tickets on sale in the run up to the day and cleverly placing the winning tickets on display urging customers to return to see if they’d won.

Sponsored cycle: Pughs Garden village enjoyed their 60 mile in-store cycle to the Carmarthen Botanical Gardens, involving both staff and customers – coupled with refreshing hot drinks from the café with each cup raising 50p for Greenfingers.  Coolings’ Sponsored cycle was inspired by her majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday – with the team cycling the distance of 220 miles from Buckingham Palace to Sandringham, all within the comfort of the shopfloor.

Gluvies: Once again Briers supplied special Greenfingers gloves with 35p donated from each pair sold, as garden centres such as Hollybush, Thetford and Palmer Gardens helped to get the #Gluvies hashtag to reach over 20,000* people all over the UK.  Briers also launched a new product to benefit Greenfingers this year, in the form of a children’s gardening set that included a fork, trowel and gloves adorned with the #Gluvies hashtag to further boost awareness for the cause.

Gardman Charity doormat. solar lights and hanging basket liners

Gardman supported Garden Re-Leaf Day this year through a range of produces including a special charity doormat for garden centres this year, with 50p being donated for each one sold.

Crest Tool Exchange

A new initiative for 2016, the tool exchange, whereby customers were encouraged to donate old gardening tools in exchange for 20% off Crest’s Kent and Stowe range, was trialled by Thetford Garden Centre in Norfolk, who also held a tombola and donated £1 from each soup sold in the café.  All donated tools will be sent away by Crest to be auctioned as part of Greenfingers’ long-running ‘Old into Gold’ campaign.

Losing Lbs to raise £££s

GTNXtra’s Trevor Pfeiffer started his Garden Re-Leaf challenge way back at the GCA conference in January, bravely announcing he would lose 2 stone by 18th March.  A week before the event he still needed to shed a few pounds but using the Theale walk as an extra boost he managed to overcome all the odds and has so far raised over £110 for Greenfingers.  He is continuing with his fundraising by aiming to lose another stone by the Chelsea Flower show.  https://www.justgiving.com/Trevor-Pfeiffer.

A number of other companies - and even a school - joined in this year.  Corby & Fellas donated three laptops and a PC to help boost the effectiveness of communications, social media and fundraising this year. Brookes & Co held a bake sale and Boston Academy had pupils designing their very own Greenfingers ‘Gluvies’.

Bridgeman opened a new garden furniture store in Amersham and supported Garden Re-Leaf Day during their first week of sales.  Jamieson Page and his Town and Country sales team organised a collection box distribution amongst garden centres and Fallen Fruits helped Van Hage raffle off one of its Dog Benches worth £150.

This year Greenfingers launched the ‘A Million Moments Appeal’, which aims to raise £1 million, over the next three years.  With the help of events such as Garden Re-Leaf Day, the charity is aiming to bring the precious gift of a garden to at least 5,000 children, and their families, who spend time in hospices across the UK.

Don’t be a fool – make sure April is a bumper event...

A combination of Garden Re-Leaf Day and better weather saw a good upturn in customer numbers and overall items sold last week, according to EPoS data supplied for the GTN Bestsellers charts.

Easter weekend should see sales leap ahead of last year, but an unsettled weather forecast may see this early Bank Holiday not hit the heights of 2014 or 2015.

What events have you got planned during April to make up for not having an Easter weekend during the key month for gardening sales?

At Barton Grange, April is Italian Food Month. What a great way to promote sales in their restaurants, cook shop, planteria, farm shop and even Italian gifts.

April also sees National Gardening Week, from 11th to 17th April. Organised by the RHS the week is sure to gain plenty of publicity and, as with Garden Re-Leaf Day, is a great opportunity to create events for local media coverage as well as generating footfall.

We know several garden centres are already planning to get involved with National Gardening Week but as this issue of GTN Bestsellers goes to press there are not any garden centre events listed on the nationalgardeningweek.org.uk website.

There’s no cost to get involved and there are colour posters, logos and flag images you can download from the website. Sounds like a no-brainer to us, especially
as we will need all the help we can get to push up those April sales.

Garden Organic joins call for glyphosate ban
Garden Organic this week stepped up its  campaign to persuade the EU not to renew the licence for glyphosate – the  most widely-used active ingredient in farm and garden weedkillers – because of the risk that it might be carcinogenic to humans, wildlife and the environment...

Garden Organic this week stepped up its  campaign to persuade the EU not to renew the licence for glyphosate – the  most widely-used active ingredient in farm and garden weedkillers – because of the risk that it might be carcinogenic to humans, wildlife and the environment.

Earlier in the week, the European Parliament’s Environment Committee passed a resolution by 38 votes to six urging the European Commission not to give glyphosate a proposed 15-year approvals extension without any restrictions.  The commission is due to consider the matter in April.

Garden Organic is urging its supporters to write to Vytenis Andriukaitis, the EU’s Health and Food Safety Commissioner, asking him to consider the independent scientific evidence that glyphosate alone, as well as in chemical formulations, causes genotoxicity in humans and animals.

Gary Philpotts at Monsanto, the makers of glyphosate, is reported to have said that a that a ban would be unlikely because of the enormous impact it would have on food production in Europe.

A decision on the future of glyphosate in Europe was postponed after re-approval was opposed by France, Sweden, Holland and Italy, because of doubts raised by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which classified glyphosate as being “probably carcinogenic to humans”.

Wyevale Garden Centres completes charity project

Wyevale Garden Centres has completed major facility improvements at Lindengate - a Buckinghamshire-based charity that offers specialised gardening activities to help those with mental health needs in their continuing recovery...

World’s End, a Wyevale Garden Centre in conjunction with Lindengate - a charity that offers specialised gardening activities to help those with mental health needs in their continuing recovery – hosted a ceremony to celebrate the completion of Wyevale Garden Centre’s major facility improvements at the Buckinghamshire-based charity.

Since opening in November 2014, Lindengate’s Social and Therapeutic Horticulture site has made tremendous progress towards achieving their mission of helping people improve and maintain their health and wellbeing through a range of gardening and stimulating outdoor activities. As part of its continued commitment to supporting its local community, Wyevale Garden Centres has offered much needed support to the local mental health charity.

The 5 acre site, adjacent to the World’s End Wyevale Garden Centre in Wendover, was in need of extensive renovation to improve facilities for the charity’s gardeners and enable the organisation to handle the demand in growth for its services in 2016.

Wyevale Garden Centres’ Estate team, and its contractor team, supported the refurbishments with supplies and man power to make the project a great success. The garden centre extensively renovated the main portakabin facility, cladded and insulated the external façade, installed decking and a wheelchair access ramp, upgraded electrical and plumbing services, decorated the internal space and improved facilities around the site used by the gardeners.

Bill Chapple, OBE Vice-chairman & county councillor for Aston Clinton Division Buckinghamshire county council, said:  “I’ve supported Lindengate from its inception, and have greatly enjoyed watching them grow from strength to strength.  It is a remarkable charity, it’s success and ambition is incomparable to other initiatives I have seen.

"They are making a genuine impact on the ‘Gardeners’ lives and contributing to the county.  And I look forward to following their continuing progress with interest.”

Lynn Sleet from Squire’s Garden Centre in Woking took part in a charity “Fire Walk” at West Byfleet Golf Club, which she described as “an amazing experience and such fun”.

She and her daughter Frankie took on the ultimate mind over matter challenge and walked 15 feet over hot coals and embers burning at 1200 degrees in order to raise money for the Woking & Sam Beare Hospices!  The hospice is a very special place for Lynn as they helped her and her husband who passed away 15 years ago, and it is also Squire’s in Woking’s chosen charity of the year.

The Woking & Sam Beare Hospices provides palliative care and support for patients and their families living in central Surrey. They respond to the needs of each individual, helping people achieve the best possible quality of life.  All patient care either in the hospice or at home is entirely free, so the charity relies on donations and fundraising activities to fund their work.

Darlac launches new Eco-Friendly Mini Tool Kit
The latest tools to be added to Darlac’s extensive collection of garden products, is a crafted set of Mini Essentials...
The latest tools to be added to Darlac’s extensive collection of garden products, is a crafted set of Mini Essentials.

These mini tools have been carefully designed to maintain a rustic beauty of a by-gone age, and can be used for indoor plants, for transplanting and potting-up, or for use in an herb garden.

Their stainless steel heads have undergone many processes’, to not only make them aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but to also prevent rust and soil adhesion, whilst their bamboo handles make them extremely strong, durable and more importantly ECO FRIENDLY.

In recent years bamboo has grown in popularity and is now widely used as an alternative to wood.

It has the tensile strength of steel and is recognised as one of the fastest growing plants in the world which can be harvested annually and does not require the use of fertilisers.

This not only makes bamboo far more productive when compared to trees per acre, but also far more eco-friendly, thus safe-guarding our precious tropical rainforests by preventing deforestation - or the permanent destruction of forests - which also accounts for at least one-fifth of all carbon emissions globally.

The tools are also small enough that children will find them easy to handle and use, so why not encourage some little helpers this summer and invest in some tools that have been crafted with their future in mind, and at a fantastic price of just £10.00 for the set of three tools you won’t be disappointed.

For further information about Darlac’s Mini Essentials call Darlac on: 01753 547790 or visit the website www.darlac.com,  where you can also view Darlac’s full sized Bamboo tool collection, along with many other useful tools and gadgets.

NEXT BHETA / GIMA MEET THE BUYER EVENT WITH WYEVALE ANNOUNCED

Following a series of successful Meet The Buyer events hosted by BHETA and GIMA with The Wyevale Garden Centre Group (TWGC), the leading UK garden centre retailer is now working with both trade associations on the next supplier development event to take place on Wednesday, 11 May 2016.  The event is being held at the Holiday Inn, Brentford Lock, near to the Wyevale Head Office.

TWGC, the largest chain of garden centres in the UK is interested in seeing potential new suppliers who have new products or innovations that will be of interest to its customers. As well as in-store options, Wyevale is also interested in premium ranges which present it with the opportunity to extend its online offer.  Both areas include opportunities for ‘niche’ suppliers.  Wyevale is willing to consider ‘winning products’ from even the smallest companies.  Buyers from all the main categories will be participating including Horticulture, Gardening, Home, Giftware, Pet, Leisure and Toys/Kids.

Suppliers must have the ability to deliver to Wyevale’s new central distribution facility and have the resource to provide the necessary technical back up and product information. Exact lead times and approximate stock holdings should also be advised on the day.  The event is open to potential new suppliers, but not to existing suppliers unless they can extend their offer to another category other than those currently supplied.  A maximum of two people from each supplier company will be allowed to attend.  Wyevale will vet applications and decide on the companies it wishes to see. Selected companies will be allocated a 20 minute appointment with the relevant buyer selected by Wyevale.

BHETA’s Home Improvement and Garden sector director, Paul Grinsell said, “Once again we anticipate this being a very popular event and would advise early booking.  It’s a real commitment to mutual benefit amongst buyers and suppliers and we are delighted to be working with GIMA to facilitate events like these.”

GIMA Director, Vicky Nuttall added, “This is a fantastic opportunity for DIY, garden and housewares companies to pitch their ideas and explore trading opportunities with the largest chain of garden centres in the UK.”

To take advantage of this opportunity to present to Wyevale, suppliers need to  apply in the first instance to Geraldine Poulton at GIMA  geraldine@gima.org.uk.
The cut-off date for applications is Friday, 15 April.

HTA Catering Conference builds on last year's success
Building on the great success of the 2015 event, this year’s HTA Catering Conference will take place over two days and feature a formal dinner, which allows delegates plenty of time and opportunities to meet with a range of key catering suppliers, including headline partner, Vision Commercial Kitchens.
The HTA Catering Conference is a proven milestone industry event that provides a real focus for garden centre catering operators. Building on the great success of the 2015 event, this year’s conference and exhibition will take place over two days and feature a formal dinner, which allows delegates plenty of time and opportunities to meet with a range of key catering suppliers, including headline partner, Vision Commercial Kitchens.

Taking place on Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 June at The Belfry Hotel and Resort, near Sutton Coldfield, the aim of the conference is to bring together garden centre owners, garden centre managers, catering managers and supervisors, together with industry specialists and those that have made changes within their own garden centres.

Since the first HTA Catering Conference in 2007, garden centre catering has evolved significantly and continues to play an increasingly important role in the make-up of the garden centre environment. This year’s two-day programme provides an opportunity to reflect on where garden centre catering has come from, tackle key areas of strategic and operational interest, identify ways in which catering operations can stand out and find out about new trends and developments in the future.  Day one will focus on development and growth, marketing, customer service and recruiting and retaining staff.  Day two will focus on food, including provenance and sustainability, menu planning, health and safety legislation, how to manage waste and reduce costs.

The conference is designed to inspire and support garden centres with catering operations by tapping into catering best practice from inside and outside the sector.

Taking inspiration from exemplary garden centres and farm shops, from the high street and from world-class establishments, the conference will feature a quality line up of experts from across the garden industry as well as the hospitality and food-service sectors.

Keynote speaker on day one will be Fred Sirieix, who will focus on the ‘Art of Service’.  Fred will discuss the principles of customer service and why excellent customer service is absolutely critical in catering-based operations.  Fred is the General Manager at Galvin at Windows, the Michelin-starred restaurant on the 28th floor of the London Hilton on Park Lane. Fred co-hosted with Michel Roux Jr. in the BBC2 series about service and hospitality, "Michel Roux's Service". Fred is also recognised for his role as the host and charismatic Maitre d'H in the much-loved “First Dates” series on Channel 4.

Speakers will also include Anthony Hester, Head of Restaurants at Dobbies, and Melanie Sewell, Catering Director at Fron Goch Garden Centre.  The panel sessions on both days will be chaired by Boyd Douglas-Davies, CEO of Hillview Garden Centres Ltd.  Neville Stein, Founder and Managing Director of Ovation Business Consultants, will host the conference on day two.

Now in its seventh year, the conference has established itself as a ‘must attend’ event designed to give all those involved in garden centre catering the inspiration to transfer food and drink into profit.
The dinner, held on the evening of Tuesday 7 June, will feature Garden Trade News ‘Greatest Catering Awards’ and an engaging after-dinner speaker.

The cost to HTA members is £325.00, plus VAT, which includes the two day conference, dinner and accommodation for single occupancy at The Belfry (£445.00, plus VAT for non-members).

Modern decor gives a new look and feel to the Baytree Restaurant

As garden centres across the country open new or extended restaurants this Easter, here's a photo tour of the re-fit of the Baytree (formerly the Hop-In) Restaurant...

As garden centres across the country open new or extended restaurants this Easter, here's a photo tour of the re-fit of the Baytree (formerly the Hop-In) Restaurant.

General Manager Nigel Wallis explained to GTN Xtra:  "After looking at a complete restaurant re-build we decided that an intial re-fit and modernisation would be the best move for us.  This re-fit has costs us about 10% of a re-build and we're already seeing huge benefits from the new menu and the modernised feel to the restaurant."

"All of the internal design work has been created by our own team.  It's been great to get the whole garden centre team involved in the process of modernising the restaurant."

GTN Food Xtra will bring you more photo tours of newly opened restaurants over the coming weeks.
