In recognition of her outstanding contribution to horticultural science and sustainability, the prestigious Veitch Memorial Medal has been awarded to Catherine Dawson, a trailblazer in the field of growing media and a horticultural innovator.
With over 30 years of experience in the industry, Catherine’s transformative work has played a key role in revolutionising the development and widespread adoption of peat-free growing media.
Catherine’s remarkable journey began with a background in soil science and agriculture, and in 1992, she joined Melcourt, a company that would become the epicentre of her pioneering research and development efforts.
Her expertise and leadership were instrumental in the creation of Sylvamix and SylvaGrow—two groundbreaking peat-free growing media products that have set new standards in the horticultural industry. These products have been praised for their environmental responsibility, commercial viability and high performance, and they are now widely used by both professional growers and home gardeners alike.
“I am incredibly honoured to receive the Veitch Memorial Medal,” said Catherine. “This
recognition is a testament to the collective effort of many passionate individuals who have worked so hard with technical rigour and attention to detail. Together, we’ve been able to create products that perform at the highest level at the same time as helping growers and gardeners alike towards the successful uptake of peat-free growing media.”
The Veitch Memorial Medal is awarded annually to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the science and practice of horticulture. Catherine Dawson’s leadership in developing peat-free growing media and her profound impact on the horticultural community make her a truly deserving recipient of this prestigious award.
