Stewart Garden shares grow your own potato know-how

Stewart Garden is making it easier than ever before for anyone to grow potatoes in 2016 with their new additions to its Blenheim planters range.

These half barrels look great in any garden and are especially effective where space is tight. They’re also easy to move around, even when full of compost and vegetables. Best of all, growing potatoes in a Blenheim planter means not having the arduous task of creating built-up trenches.

Made of high quality plastics, the Stewart Garden Blenheim planters are tough, durable and guaranteed to withstand seasonal frosts and ultra violet rays. This means they’ll keep their colour all year round.

The grow your own trend has been gathering pace in recent years, with the Evening Standard1 reporting in April 2015 that urban gardeners are, ‘discovering new ways to help live sustainably without breaking the bank.’

The potato planting season is between March and May. For best results:
  • line the bottom of a large deep container such at a Stewart Garden Blenheim planter with 15cm (6 inches) of potting compost
  • plant the seed potato just below the surface
  • as new stems grow, keep adding compost until the container is full
  • keep your growing potatoes away from frost pockets as these can cause damage to the vegetable. Potatoes need to be where they’ll get the sun.

You can expect at least five to ten potatoes per plant. This means you could feed a family for a year with around 75 plants.2

Stewart Garden’s Blenheim planters are available in two sizes:

·         40cm half barrel, RRP (recommended retail price) £19.99

·         61cm half barrel, RRP £44.99

If you’re already sorted for potatoes, the Blenheim half barrels are also perfect for larger plants, herbs, fruit and vegetables or even small trees. Alternatively, use one to create a stylish water feature.

Speaking of the new Blenheim half barrel planters, Gavin Wray channel manager at Stewart Garden, said: “As the market leader in grow your own, we design our products with everyone in mind. These planters make it possible for anyone to grow delicious vegetables, regardless of how large or small your garden is or how experienced you are.”

Stewart Garden engages with customers through its love of gardening, strong heritage and trust. The company uses the latest production techniques and quality systems.

Stewart Garden manufactures its planters from quality plastic at its state-of-the-art factory in Banbury. The company also provides eye-catching point-of-sale and store-specific merchandising advice for all retailers.

Stewart Garden’s grow your own products, pots, watering equipment, propagators and garden accessories are available in over 1,600 outlets across the UK and Eire. These include DIY outlets such as B&Q, Homebase and Wilkinsons and garden centres such as Dobbies and Klondyke/Strikes, Wyevale and over 600 independent garden centres.
