Johnson's offers Kalettes for just £1 to promote a Great British vegetable

Kalettes is the new name for the delicious, nutritious vegetable formerly known as Brukale or the flower sprout. And seed company Johnsons has teamed up with its British breeder to offer UK gardeners the chance to try the unique Brussels sprout and kale hybrid for the special price of £1.00 for a packet of 25 seeds.

Kalettes are the result of 15 years of hard work, having been developed by traditional hybridisation and not by genetic modification.  The breeder's aim was to create a kale-type vegetable which was eye-catching, versatile, mild- and sweet-flavoured, easy to prepare and nutritious. Kalettes® fit the bill on all counts.

The attractive, rosette-like shoots can be steamed, boiled, microwaved, stir-fried, sautéed or eaten raw, have a delicious taste and contain twice as much of vitamins E and B6 as Brussels sprouts, on top of which 100gm supplies an adult with two thirds of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C.

Already widely produced by commercial growers, popular with many consumers in Britain and Europe, and available from several major UK supermarkets, Kalettes® are as easy to grow as other brassicas and, not surprisingly in view of their parentage, the plants are ultra-hardy, and are capable of cropping from October to March, thereby providing a really worthwhile winter vegetable. Now Johnsons is giving everyone the chance to grow Kalettes® in their own gardens.

Kalettes® even boasts its own website - log on at http://www.kalettes.com/uk/
