fter a season so far, that has been better than 2019 but not quite as strong as some hoped for after the boom of 2021, real innovation, with an emphasis on sustainability will be the things most sought after at Glee later this month. Growing media and plants, especially veg plants, have sold very well again this year but the lack of a sustained spell of warm weather is keeping people from spending leisure time in their gardens and that together with the economic situation is holding back the sales of garden decoration, furniture and BBQ’s. What we’ve heard from garden centre buyers over the past few weeks is that at Glee they will be seeking out products that appeal to the new gardeners and ones that add to their sustainability credentials.

Interview

Making peat-free work for ever yone

Ahead of Glee this month and the expected Government announcement of a ban on retail sales of peat, industry leaders met in the Glee Studio to discuss how they are working with the industry and their customers to successfully transition to peat-free growing media.

C

haired by GTN’s Trevor Pfeiffer, the Glee round-table discussion with Adam Wigglesworth, Director of Aylett Nurseries, Roger Crookes, part of the senior management team of Pughs Garden Centres, and Marcus Eyles, Horticultural Director at Dobbies Garden Centres, was recorded for airing on the www.gleebirmingham.com website at 2pm on June 14th, in the run up to Glee 2022. The group began by congratulating Dobbies on its new John Innes growing media range which was named RHS Chelsea Sustainable

Gardening Product of the Year 2022. “We started developing that in 2018,” say Marcus Eyles. “It has taken quite a few years to put together with a lot of support from our suppliers to be able to achieve it and we were very, very pleased to get recognised by the RHS.” Dobbies has stopped selling peat-based compost and since 1st January this year has only offered peat-free growing media options. It now has a full portfolio of products that were previously peat based, from seed to multipurpose. “John Innes was the last part of

that puzzle,” said Marcus, adding: “We’ve had a complete refresh across the whole range, and we’ve got great confidence and would like people to really embrace it.” Ayletts Nurseries in Hertfordshire began its peat-free journey in 2008 when it was approached by Friends of the Earth who wanted to know the ingredients of the growing media it sold. Today it uses its in-house Peat-ometer so customers can, at a glance, see how much peat is in each product. “We’ve seen a huge change this year. Our numbers are now

1960’s-1970‘s when transitioning from selling plants grown in the ground to container-grown stock using peat composts. “This is a kind of new millennial version of that journey,” he says. “Once they [our customers] understood the journey that we as a trade have been on and the challenges we’re facing, particularly with consistency and wanting to make sure that what we’re supplying them is a good compost, they joined us on the journey and now we’re actually comparing notes,” he explains. Pugh’s customers can now be part of a forum sharing their findings using peat-free composts in their gardens.

A learning curve for staff and customers

80% peat free [14% up on last year] 20% peat. Suppliers have really worked hard on these and we can now be confident in what we’re selling,” said Adam Wigglesworth. “People want to do the right thing and they want the change and one of the most commonly asked questions is ‘what can I buy that’s peat free?’” Adam says information is key and the Peat-o-meter, the brainchild of a staff member, has been a game changer. Getting the information on the ingredients in each bag can now be easily gained from supplier helplines. “There’s no reason why anyone can’t easily get that information to put in their centre point of sale material, but manufacturers change batches so we need to keep an eye on that.” To further promote sales of peat-free compost, Ayletts’ staff have been using it in their gardens at home so they can pass on their experiences and it has been keenly priced so it’s the best value package deal. “It does result in a little bit less margin but we all need to do our bit,” says Adam. In South Wales, Roger Crookes has been personally engaging with customers and inviting them on the journey into a peat-free world. It’s similar, he says, to the one taken in the

www.gardentradenews.co.uk

Many customers, especially those with a bit of gardening know-how and those that are used to peat-based growing media may be a bit nervous or unsure about buying peat free, so what ideas does the panel have? “We can sit here, we can talk about it, but the point of contact for the consumer quite often is somebody on the shop floor,” says Marcus. Dobbies has put together an e-learning package which includes an RHS video explaining the environmental reasoning behind reducing peat use plus informal questions with answers that customers are most commonly asking. “We want to make sure we are all giving the same message and that everybody is on this journey,” he adds. Adam from Ayletts says everyone, including staff, are still learning. “We’re seeing the mixes that are coming through from growers where they’re reducing their peat content. We’ve got lots of different suppliers, and lots of different SKUs need treating differently… our team in the plantaria are learning.” Adam is also noticing an increase in requests for specialist rather than multipurpose growing media and Marcus too says that now Dobbies has a John Innes range customers are happy

to buy what they are used too. He adds that it’s great to be able to offer a full range and even on the small bags, including houseplant compost it’s making a big difference and creating volume sales. Around the table there was agreement that customers should be steered towards buying the right compost for a specific purpose. “We are not advising people to use multipurpose for seeds, because we have a seed compost and therefore we should be using that,” says Marcus. “We’re all getting better at putting the right signage and telling people ‘you need to use the right thing’. I sometimes say to customers, ‘you’re spending a huge amount of money on that lovely plant and you’re trying to find the cheapest compost. You don’t fill your Bentley with any old rubbish, do you? So, you’ve got these lovely plants. Let’s give them a really great treat,” says Adam.

Opportunities for the future Change is in the air and although the industry has made good progress everyone agrees there is still a long way to go. “The past is gone,” says Roger. “There’s an exciting future ahead. We’re not powerless in this. We have huge power to influence and cooperate with this amazing trend. I’m excited.” Adam says the industry shouldn’t let perfection in gardening get in the way of progress. “We need to go forward and customers want us to do that and they want to do the right thing. We need to facilitate it. We shouldn’t let perfection hold us back.” Marcus says the industry should now be proactive and has seen it coming together on the peat free issue, which has fast tracked and gained momentum really quickly. “We should be sharing [the issues], discussing them and getting on the front foot rather than being caught lagging behind.” “We’ve got an opportunity,” says Adam. “Let’s grasp it”.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Gardening trends kicked off at Chelsea

Awards for sustainable products, on-trend colours and merchandising ideas hint at a good summer’s trading ahead.

R

eturning to its traditional week in mid-May, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show was awash with inspiration for customers, regardless of the size of garden, and ideas for retailers to help boost sales of plants and products for the summer ahead. GTN brings you news from the show, and inspiration and ideas from the gardens and trade stands to use back at the garden centre helping capture the imagination of consumers. Royal reds, regal purples, pinks and whites were the favoured plant colours of the Show Gardens with lupins, roses and foxgloves providing much of the eyecatching spectacle. Of note was the deep claret poppy called ‘Lauren’s grape’ loved not only by show visitors but also Chelsea’s resident bees which found it an irresistible draw. It featured on several gardens as did David Austin’s beautiful English shrub rose ‘Desdemona’ of the softest white and the deep purple lupin ‘Masterpiece’. Lupins of

all colours were very much in evidence too. Keeping with the purple theme, it was a deep claret semponium (a cross between a sempervivum and aeonium) that took the prize of Chelsea Plant of the Year. Bred by Surreal Succulents in Penzance, drought tolerant x Semponium ‘Destiny’ has rosettes around 60cm across and leaves keep their dark purple colouring all year round. Yellow flowers are an added attraction and once mature, the plant will begin to branch. Second place went to a long flowering (seven-eight months) pink thrift Armeria pseudarmeria ‘Dreamland’ with the third prize going to Salvia ‘Pink Amistad’ a relation of the popular purple/blue flowering Salvia ‘Amistad’.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show Peter Seabrook was a founding Trustee of the David Colegrave Foundation which supports students studying horticulture in the UK and Ireland and champions horticultural careers. It was fitting, therefore, that Peter’s son Richard was welcomed to the Foundation as a new Trustee. With the help of companies and organisations within the industry such as Blue Diamond Garden Centres and the British Protected Ornamentals Association, the David Colegrave Foundation has this year already awarded bursaries of more than £25,000 to 11 students.

Great Pavilion to celebrate his life in gardening. Designed to represent a corner of his garden, it featured plants Peter had championed and included hard landscaping elements such as paving and a pergola all of which had been used for previous Chelsea exhibits. Created by Neil Gow, Val Christman and her daughter Molli, it also featured a new sweet pea called ‘Peter Seabrook’ bred by Chris Wiley a bunch of which was presented to by HM the Queen. Seed is currently only available through the Precious Plants website with £1 from each sale going towards the Floral Fantasia which Peter set up at RHS Garden Hyde Hall, Essex. At the stand, Alan Titchmarsh fondly remembered Peter and said: “He was a real fighter for horticulture and for getting children interested, not forcing them. But just showing them what gardening had to offer. Chelsea has come back and reminded people just what this industry and horticulture and the British public owe to Peter Seabrook.”

A boost for Greenfingers British Garden Centres (BGC) made a pledge to raise £25,000 in time for the 25th anniversary of the Greenfingers Charity in 2024, and happily has already achieved its goal. It presented a cheque for £25,000 to Greenfingers Charity which was further boosted with £5000 from sales during the flower show of the new hydrangea ‘Red Butterfly’. The cultivar was introduced by BGC to celebrate its new butterfly logo and plants will soon be available in all its plantarias.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show Dobbies scores a hattrick at Chelsea A new formular of peat-free John Innes 1,2 and 3 growing media created for Dobbies scooped the top spot in the RHS Chelsea Sustainable Garden Product of the Year competition. Rated ‘A’ under the Responsible Sourcing Scheme, it’s the retailer’s own brand of John Innes based composts and compliments its existing peat free alternatives. Judge Deborah Meadon said the vote was unanimous among the panel and was helped by the retailer illustrating scalability of the growing media and sustainability throughout all parts of the product’s journey. “It was a vintage year this “year,” said Deborah Meadon who agreed that changing the award to one focussing on sustainability was a good move. “It’s helped people tell their story in a better way, you know, so we can understand deeply, what is it about their product that’s different?” The growing media also helped Dobbies win the RHS Assessor’s Award for Retail Innovation which was new this year. The Dobbies exhibit, with its green walls and roof, patio herb garden and a sprinkling of exotics such as lemons and grapefruit trees was also recognised with a five-star rating. This is the third year running it has received this award. Contributions for the exhibit from companies including Burgon & Ball, Carbon Gold, Twool and Floreac were appreciated.

All three awards displayed on the Dobbies exhibit.

Five months of flowers gives Taylors its 27th consecutive Gold medal Out of the 18000 bulbs grown in controlled conditions since December for the flower show, 1000 made it to the stand and were expertly arranged by the Taylors team resulting in the company’s 27th consecutive Gold medal. Stand info: Hall 20 G40-H41 Contact info: sales@sgpuk.com, Tel: 01235 424100 As we continue to recover from the effects of the covid-19 pandemic, the conflict in Ukraine has created yet more uncertainty and insecurity, along with a rise in the cost of living which will likely reduce the expendable income of households across the UK and Europe. Disruption to supply chains over the last 18 months has been a challenge to suppliers and retailers alike, while we anticipate 2023 reverting to a more normal trading pattern. Despite these adversities, Smart Garden Products continues to support the garden trade with over

300 new products to delight and inspire consumers across Solar Lighting, Faux & Garden Décor, Wild Bird Care, Gardening, Pet and… a brand-new range, Outdoor Heating. The huge growth in popularity of Outdoor Living products is evidenced by the success of our Outside In Designs brand, with design-savvy gardeners creating extensions to their homes by decorating their garden spaces. This is a product category we have long wanted to bring into our portfolio to provide our customers with excellent product quality at key retail price points, matched with unrivalled

service and availability. “People have fallen in love with their garden spaces and my aim is to extend the time our customers spend there. For me, experience, quality, and service form the fundamental pillars for good business. Smart Garden Products are synonymous with these, so it is fantastic to be contributing to their product range expansion. My aspiration is for Smart to become the UK number one Outdoor Heating supplier.” James Mapson - Smart Garden Products Senior Category Manager, Outdoor Heating.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Our top garden retailer inspiration tips from Chelsea are….

1

Put plants into a room setting making it easier for customers to envisage what they will look like in their own homes and gardens. Some of the examples at Chelsea may be exaggerated in terms of scale and approach but it helps to show how you can transfer ideas into a room or small area of your home or garden. Burgon and Ball helpfully divided its stand into a home and garden with houseplants and related products imaginatively displayed in white box shelving. Houseplant themed wallpaper which formed a backdrop helped draw the eye into the display – simple yet very effective.

2

Go bold on merchandising with over-the-top eyecatching displays. A theme for the floral art installations in the Great Pavilion was Tablescape with florists tasked with dressing a table incorporating natural materials with attention being given to the tiniest detail. Why not use your instore or local florist, or perhaps a local floristry college to decorate an outdoor living table with flowers and plants. Not only will this stop people in their tracks but they may be enticed to buy the furniture and tableware too!

4

The houseplant studios at Chelsea demonstrate great creativity showing how plants add colour, texture and life and bring therapeutic and practical benefits. A disco-themed garden bar and entertainment space, relaxing room with plants suspended from the ceiling and a plant clinic offering advice on how to care for plants were all crowd pleasers. Think about displaying houseplants in an eye-catching way to appeal to different audiences. Perhaps do something a little different in a corner of your houseplant area or set up a houseplant clinic session where people can bring plants in or ask questions about care and maintenance.

From Stephen McDonnel ‘Think before we eat’ inspired by a holiday in Costa Rica and encouraging people to consider how some edible fruits are grown to the detriment of the rainforest.

3

Let the wildlife in – encouraging pollinators into your garden was a huge theme at this year’s show. The BBC Studios Our Green Planet and RHS Bee Garden demonstrated how many bees rely on the plants we grow and the habitats we create in our own outdoor spaces for their survival. Create a wildlife garden in your centre to show customers how different plants can help attract more pollinators whether it’s in shade or sun. Add products such as bee houses, insect hotels and ponds and encourage customers to create a rewilding area – just a small patch or corner can make a real difference.

Storytelling played a huge role in the show gardens at Chelsea demonstrated so well by the Best in Show garden – A Rewilding Britain Landscape. The story behind the design helps to convey how the planting and styling have come about. This was also the case with Miracle-Gro’s consumerfacing stand which it used to help explain through bright, clear graphics and props the initiatives it is undertaking on its sustainability journey. This included its current trial using in-store dispensers for Tomorite, lawn seed and feed and the messaging around the move to peat-free growing media and the importance of feeding your plants. Think about how you explain messaging in-store. Provide easy to understand information and visual means to highlight environmental issues along with products and approaches to combat their impact.

Andy Smith-Williams showed how to make two small front gardens become one larger space .

6

There are always stand out plants and plant combinations at Chelsea. Pull together a collection illustrating the key trends and colours from the show and highlight as ‘Get the Chelsea Look’ or ‘As seen at Chelsea’ etc. Put together a bench in a prominent position highlighting key plants or themes eg planting for wildlife. Listen to customer questions and comments relating to Chelsea and use them to shape content and pick up on popular themes.

7

Not all of the show gardens at Chelsea are large. This year saw a whole area dedicated to balcony and small space gardens demonstrating a variety of looks that could be achieved with minimal space available. Provide cameo gardens in-store showing what can be achieved in a small space. By planting containers with a variety of vegetables you can demonstrate that you don’t need a huge plot to grow your own produce. Mock up front gardens too are a great way to show off plants and products, and Andy Smith-Williams provided inspiration with The Core Arts Front Garden Revolution, an amalgamation of wo neighbouring front gardens. The removal of the central boundary creates a larger, more open space which promotes positive wellbeing and encourages socialising. Kirsty Allsopp, television present known for her property programmes told GTN it was her favourite garden in the show and the RHS recognised its creativity with a Gold medal.

8

As well as brimming with plants some of the show gardens included words and quotes. The most notable one was The Perennial Garden ‘With Love’ which featured the quote ‘If I had a flower for every time I thought of you’. Think about inspiring customers with evocative quotes on plants and gardening in your displays and communications. Not only are they memorable but they also conjure up emotions. Examples include ‘The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature’ and ‘If you have a garden and a library, you have all you need’.

Growing sales the Woodmansterne way Highfield Garden World and Simpsons Garden Centre are impressed with increased sales of greetings cards which have delighted their customers since signing up to Woodmansterne’s W-Select Programme.

T

he role of garden centres as a vital hub to connect people within local and wider communities has become increasingly evident in the last few years, and with 3 million new gardeners attracted to the pastime, garden centres have an opportunity to take advantage of promoting non-gardening ranges to even more people. Sales of greeting cards have reflected this increase in footfall and figures. Analysis of garden centre Epos data provided to GTN Bestsellers shows that greeting card sales rose by 22% in 2021 to levels that are 49% higher than 2018. Garden centres are clearly becoming the retail venue of choice for many when it comes to choosing and buying greetings cards. Woodmansterne understands the garden retailing market and is supporting retailers with its W-Select Programme. It’s proving successful at Highfield Garden World, Gloucestershire and Simpsons Garden Centre, Inverness, and Woodmansterne is inviting retailers to its stand at Glee to see how the programme can work for them too.

Glee 2021 was a turning point for Highfield Garden World

Woodmansterne’s display at Glee last year which wowed Tim Armstrong and Tim Greenway from Highfield Garden Centre – expect more of the same this month.

“We visited the Woodmansterne stand at Glee last year after receiving an invitation on a hand-written card from the team. We were blown away!” said Tim Armstrong, Highfields General Manager and Director. “Tim Greenway (the owner of Highfield) and I looked

18 June 2022

Each element of the transition was seamless, from planning right through to installation round and were so impressed with the whole offer, from the quality of the products and fixtures to the way they had been merchandised– the whole thing just made us want to buy a card. Eco sustainability was another important factor in us choosing to work with Woodmansterne. Its green credentials very much aligned with our own ethos on the environment. The fact its cards are unwrapped, make use of recycled paper and were glitter free made them the perfect fit for us. “Mark Timlett from Woodmansterne was fantastic (as was Julie their sales agent). Each element of the transition was seamless, from planning right through to installation. While we were a little daunted by the thought of changing category manager, the process was made simple by Mark and his team. Everything was carefully planned and managed, even when we made last minute changes to the location of the space, the team made things easy for us. “It’s certainly exceeded my expectations. The proof is in the sales really, and they’ve been fantastic. We were fortunate enough to be open during lockdown last March so saw a big increase in card sales due to the pandemic, but even with big figures against us we’re still comfortably up year-on-year. Something else I’ve noticed since the change is a huge uplift in sales of Mother’s Day and Easter cards, we’ve never sold so many!

“The team at Woodmansterne were unbelievable, they are always on hand for support and advice, it’s been great working with them and I would definitely recommend W-Select. It has been a seamless transition between our old supplier and Woodmansterne. After we had agreed the new layout and card stands it was no time at all from them coming in and only taking a day to change the whole department around.”

The display looking good at Simpsons.

Why Simpsons Garden Centres chose the W-Select Service Established in 2000, Simpsons is an independent family run business with two centres, one in Aberdeenshire, the other Inverness - Scotland’s city in the Highlands. Very much part of the local and wider communities, the garden centres have a focus and reputation for providing excellent quality products and customer service from the outdoor plant area and gardening departments to its award-winning restaurants and home departments.

The fact that Woodmansterne offered no plastic packaging was a big tick for us…… the paper smart seal is such a simple but effective way to display the range. “We were recommended to switch to the W-Select programme by our Woodmansterne agent Kevin and although the business already had a good sales performing greetings card department, we felt very confident in moving for a number of reasons,” said Janet Campbell, Retail Team Leader at Inverness. “Firstly, the quality and varied range of cards available for our customers, giving so much more choice than our previous range. Secondly, the quality of the display units provided for the range was a big positive for us, meaning cards could be showcased much better and allow customers to be able to really see the range much easier. Finally, the fact that Woodmansterne offered no plastic packaging was a big tick for us. We are always looking at ways that we can reduce plastic within the business and for our customers who want to actively seek out products that are kinder for the environment. The paper smart seal is such a simple but effective way to display the range.

Janet Campbell enjoys hearing customers giggling at the funny cards on the Woodmansterne display.

“The move to working with Woodmansterne has been seamless all round from the beginning. The initial set up was quick and straightforward, and sales agents Kevin and Steven have been really helpful ensuring our displays are always looking great and full. The service has been excellent from ordering to liaising with our accounts team. “The range has been very well received by our customers and team alike. We often find new and regular customers taking more time to browse and shop the stands - especially the funny cards, where we can hear customers giggling in the background! Sales have increased markedly since the new set up and ranges were implemented in 2020. “We would definitely recommend Woodmansterne to anyone looking for a fresh and exciting quality greeting card offering. The service from the team and sales from the new collection have certainly made the move worthwhile.”

All you need to make outdoor living a breeze

An ingenious wood splitter and a Nordic outdoor cooking range are bringing the great outdoors to Glee.

F

andango Fire Tools is the European distributor for two outstanding ranges which go h and in hand to help make the most of hand valuable time spent outdoors all year round. The Kindling Cracker makes light and safe work splitting logs for chimineas, fifire re pits, outdoor pizza ovens and grills while Espegard fire fire pans offer offer an authentic Norwegian way to cook outdoors.

22 June 2022

The star of the show is the Kindling Cracker, a patented firewood splitter invented a decade ago by Ayla when she was 13 and at school in New Zealand. Made in Australia from top-grade, recycled cast iron (and with a return rate of virtually zero), it is now hugely popular with consumers and buyers with hundreds of thousands of units sold across the globe.

After initial success in Scandinavia, European sales have surged in France, Italy and Spain, and in Germany Bauhaus is pushing the Kindling Cracker into its German stores after noticing the success in the Nordic region. The Kindling Cracker came to the UK late in 2021 and already over 7000 units have been sold here. British garden lovers and outdoor living enthusiasts are hugely impressed and with more gardens than ever having fire pits, pizza ovens, wood fired hot tubs and grills, the Kindling Cracker is the perfect accessory. It also has the advantage of looking good. Its understated yet attractive decoration in relief makes it a great indoor fireplace accessory for those who heat their homes with a wood burner. And because it allows you to split wood without using an axe, it is a safe alternative to use indoors and out by young and old alike. To make life even easier, Fandango Fire Tools offers everything needed to complete the package. Both the Kindling Cracker Original and the larger Kindling Cracker King can be bought with a German-made hickory handled hammer, high quality natural firelighters, weatherproof covers and chopping blocks.

A traditional range of fire pans, braziers and grills from Norwegian company Espegard will also be displayed bringing Nordic inspiration from its mountains, forests and seas to UK gardens. Espegard has been making outdoor living products for three decades. Its portable cooking pans and grills enable people, wherever they are to keep warm and enjoy the simple pleasures of eating outside.

Could digestate be the future for peat-free composts? Bloomin Amazing organic soil enricher and mulch, was launched in 2018 and at Glee the same year won the Best of British and GIMA Innovators awards. From a standing start it is now found in more than 400 centres and consistently features in the GTN top 50 Best Sellers lists.

T

he rush to find good alternatives to peat has ignited a renewed interest in digestate products. On the face of it, this rich crumbly organic matter is a perfect material to blend with growing media, so the Bloomin Amazing team has been exploring its potential. Bloomin Amazing, a soil enricher and mulch, is a by-product from an anaerobic digester (AD). Made by feeding natural and sustainable locally grown crops into the digester, which behaves like a cow’s stomach, the process creates valuable by-products which represent circle of sustainability. Biogas is cleaned, filtered and injected into the national gas grid to heat local homes. Natural CO2 is captured and used in food and drink production. Solid digestate is rich, moist, crumbly, organic and rich in nutrients. Liquid digestate is returned to the fields as a natural organic fertiliser. In 2012, the Bloomin Amazing AD plant in Dorset, was the first in the UK to inject green gas directly back into to the grid. Since then over 100 similar gas to grid plants have sprung up but not all are fed exclusively on locally grown crops. Some rely on food waste, animal by-products or other organic materials

Many gardeners choose a multi-purpose compost for all their growing needs and expect branded products to work consistently for most plant types. So, it’s important bagged growing media based around digestates or other alternatives to peat behave the same. Rachel also tested products from other AD plants and it soon became clear that some, marketed as multipurpose compost were far from optimal for good plant growth. There were even cases where digestate blends resulted in total plant failure. Get summer ready with EASYLINE roofing sheets for garden sheds With summer’s warmer weather, lighter nights and people spending more evenings outdoors, thoughts can turn to cultivating a new look for that tired old garden shed or outbuilding.

Each EASYLINE sheet is made of 50% – 60% recycled fifibres bres and contains no hazardous substances, making it completely safe for people and family pets. “EASYLINE compares very favourably to traditional shed felt thanks to its 10year waterproofing guarantee and ease of installation,” said Nisha. “Since we introduced EASYLINE into the garden retailing sector, the interest from independent businesses and others has grown and grown. Glee 2021

Looking forward to a summertime Glee This year marks an exciting new chapter in Glee’s history, as for the first time in more than 45 years, it takes place in June bringing a summertime vibe to Birmingham’s NEC.

D

emand for gardening products and sundries has grown exponentially in the last few years and two key sales periods have clearly emerged – February to June, and September to December. To remain responsive to these changes Glee has undergone a period of significant consultation, a result of which is the change of date. Of those surveyed, 52% said September was now too late to complete all their buying and 72% supported the change. Another advantage is that it frees up the key month of September so retailers can concentrate on Christmas buying. The ethos of the show, however, remains the same, bringing all sectors together to support and grow the gardening and outdoor living industry.

Glee preview Fire, Grill & Chill

The change of season means the show will have a summer festival vibe boosted by a new area for demonstrating outdoor entertaining and living products. Dubbed Fire, Grill & Chill, the space gives companies such as Landmann, Kadamo and the Cheeky Charlie Oven Company a chance to show their products in action. With a drinks truck, ice cream and daily live music the area will also provide the backdrop to this year’s Glee Party open to all visitors and exhibitors in Hall 20 on 28 June at 5pm.

New products

Glee Innovator Zone

Shining a spotlight on new product development is the Glee Innovator Zone, (Hall 19) which since 2009, has helped more than 275 companies break into the garden retail market. Bridging the gap between pre-commercial new product ideas and market ready launches it’s the place to spot the stars of the future.

Extending the celebration of all things new is the GTN-sponsored New Product Showcase (Hall 19), where exciting new launches compete for the New Product Awards. The top three shortlisted entries will make their pitch to a judging panel of industry experts, who will be looking for key factors such as innovation, design, promotion and saleability. The winners of 17 categories will be announced on 29 June.

Website filters make stand location easy

British made products from UK manufacturers can be easily found by using choosing the ‘Made in Britain’ filter on the Glee Exhibitor 2022 page of the Glee website. Buyers can also filter for sustainable products made of natural, recycled, recyclable or compostable materials, browse specific product categories or find suppliers from other countries.

Celebrating buyers

The best of garden retailing will be celebrated at Glee with the Buyers Power List awards, being held on Tuesday 28 June at 17:00. The prestigious awards recognise individual buyers and buying teams who have gone above and beyond to make a difference within the garden retail industry.

Green Heart

Located in the atrium by the entrance to all the halls is the Green Heart where you can source the best in nursery stock, bedding plants, trees and shrubs. Houseplants will also be sited here helping to boost this seemingly evergrowing sector. Look out for companies including Craigmarloch Nurseries, Golden Grove Nursery, Green Inspiration Plants, Happy Plants, Javado, and The Bransford Webbs Plant Company.

Responsible sourcing Taking strides to be as transparent as possible with gardeners, Evergreen Garden Care (EGC) has had its compost mixes across Miracle-Gro and Levington audited with the Responsible Sourcing Scheme (RSS). A As it continues its journey to drive ssustainability in the gardening sector, EGC is llaunching a Levington John Innes Peat-Free R Range and has its sights on making MiracleG Gro and Levington 100% peat-free within the next few years. To continue its environmentffocused initiative of removing peat from all compost products, EGC has invested £7 million this year alone on the transition. Glee goes Floral on Thursday for Greenfingers

Remember to pack your best Floral gear so that you can celebrate Floral Thursday for Greenfifingers i at Glee!

F

or the last day of this year’s first Summertime show, Glee is once again going all floral to have some fun and raise as much money as possible for the Greenfingers charity so that more wonderful gardens can be built in children’s hospices across the UK. To join in the fun, all you have to do is wear your best, brightest or even most lurid, floral attire to the show. It’s as simple as that. We raise funds for Greenfingers during the morning by selling raffle tickets of a grand draw held at lunchtime on The Stage, where we also hope to set a new record for the most Gleeful people in one place to be dressed in floral gear. Last year we raised just over £1,750 for Greenfingers on Floral Thursday. We look forward to you helping us raise over £2,000 this year.

e have created an online appointment booking system which allows visitors to book a meeting prior to, or during SOLEX, with the exhibitor of their choice. This will enable visitors to schedule in meetings and organise their time more efficiently while visiting SOLEX.

How does it work? All our exhibitors can be found on the SOLEX FLOOR PLAN, via the SOLEX website. A simple click on the booking bar via the exhibitor’s page takes you straight to the Online Appointment Booking System allowing the scheduling of appointments during the show, meaning everyone can organise their visit before they arrive!

68 June 2022

An email confirmation will be sent to the visitor and the exhibitor confirming appointment details. Each time slot is 30 minutes, which means an appointment can be scheduled from 30 up to 90 minutes. “We are always looking for ways to help our SOLEX visitors and exhibitors. Knowing how precious everyone’s time is, and how busy we all are, we hope this new booking system helps everyone to manage their diaries more effectively over the three days of the SOLEX exhibition,” says Gina Hinde, Solex Director.

Exhibitors and visitors use them or lose them! Boyd J Douglas-Davies, HTA President

I

t was a brave decision to move Glee to June but I think the right one, although it comes with challenges but more of that in a minute. Over the years major players have dipped in and out of Glee (and other shows) but I sincerely hope the years they missed have made them realise that they need the show… and the show needs them. Our industry thrives on refresh and change as both our teams and customers enjoy the way we roll from season to season and year to year. Glee, SPOGA/GAFA, the HTA National Plant Show, Solex and many more besides, give us all the opportunity to see the next big seller, to plan on how we are going to present and promote it, and sometimes inspire us to make significant changes to our business model. There is no easier way to see so much in a few hours/days than at a trade show. To be successful (and yes that means profitable for the organiser, who takes massive risk by staging them) the shows need all the players – little or large – to attend. And by ‘attend’ I mean taking a stand as an exhibitor or committing sufficient hours as a visitor. I will never give meaningful time to a company who thinks attending a show means walking the aisles and buying customers a coffee or two while the exhibitors – those that are paying for the building and facility to be open – are left on their stand hoping to see customers new and old. If you want to be at the show… be at the show, not in the coffee shop. Visitors who don’t allocate enough time to the show are also doing it an injustice. After months of planning, days of building and thousands of pounds expenditure the least an exhibitor can expect is that the buyers will visit and give them enough time to present an overview of the products. You can’t learn anything by walking by, you have to stop and look! So the problems… June has become incredibly crowded with SPOGA and HTA National Plant Show overlapping and running just before Glee. Throw into the mix BBC Gardeners’ World Live – a consumer

event attended by many in the trade – and you have a very busy time. Businesses large or small will be challenged by this sequence. For exhibitors, the uncertainty of cost changes over the next 10 months must be giving them sleepless nights as they deliberate how to present products with or without fixed prices for next season. Buyers, please be understanding of the issues growers and manufacturers face. Support them at the shows and openly discuss your realistic expectation of sales potential, subject to products hitting the right price point – share with the producer where you feel that is, but don’t be naïve and expect things to be at the same prices as they were last, or even this, year. For the last two years both June and July have been busy across the industry, sadly it looks as though normal trading patterns have returned but nevertheless we should be working hard to support the new garden customer – they don’t instinctively know that those that went before stopped shopping by mid-June. As an industry we need to put effort and even theatre into our summer merchandising to give ourselves half a chance of building the business. All in all, it is going to be a challenge to attend all the shows but please find a way of doing so. With the shows we have an opportunity to flourish, without them I truly believe we will look like the MAPHA logo!! And here is one couple who really know the value of shows. Having met at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show a few years ago the romantic Jack White (Allensmore Nursery) decided there was no better place to propose than at this year’s show! Congratulations to Jack and his fiancé Lilidh Matthews (Finding Roots). Anyone up for building a wedding garden???

You can’t learn anything by walking by, you have to stop and look!

No time to stop for breath just yet Vicky Nuttall, Director of GIMA

W

e are now officially over halfway through 2022 and what a year it has been so far. The reopening of the world has seen many of us suddenly faced with a packed diary. Whether it was all hands-on deck in the first few months of the year to get stock on the ground and on the road to retailers ahead of the season, busy building RHS Chelsea Flower Show stands or working tirelessly to maximise the Jubilee celebrations, 2022 has been hectic and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. Unfortunately, not all aspects of 2022 have been playing ball. The weather has been as British as it can be, forcing the season to start a little later and resulting in sales lower than those experienced in 2020/21. While the worry is that the bubble has burst, we must remember that sales are still tracking above what we experienced in 2019, meaning the power of gardening is still very much alive. Reassuring news for us all no doubt, especially those that stockpiled product to avoid repeating availability issues at the height of the season. While sales may not have skyrocketed as quickly as they have done in previous years, customers are still investing in their gardening projects. Of course, rising costs in all areas are adding additional pressures, as are cash flow concerns. Long distant supply chains and the fear of wavering consumer confidence are also impacting the positive mood, and while they show no signs of abating, I know that many are forging ahead as Glee 2022 will prove. As I write this column Glee is just a few weeks away and I am excited to get onsite. This year we have around 90 members exhibiting, Jenny including a host of new brands Douthwaite, GIMA's new that have joined our organisation President. this year to optimise the growth of the garden retail sector. Whether our members or other brands, Glee will remain a hub of exciting innovation, declarations to support the sustainability movement and vital networking. Whatever challenges you might be facing, Glee represents the perfect opportunity to maintain the open dialogue that has stood us in such good stead over the last two-plus years, so do use the platform to

communicate with the supply chain as much as possible. It is through collaboration where we thrive most. One aspect of Glee that excites me the most is the dedication to innovation and new product development. The new timing of Glee may see this year’s edition cause some challenges to bring all planned newness to market – something I am confident we will overcome for 2023 – I am sure the show will be rich with new product additions and category expansions, nonetheless. The GIMA Innovators Seed Corn Fund will certainly feed into this, with our 2022 winner set to be announced on the morning of Tuesday 28 June. The wider Innovators Zone is also a superb place to source unique suppliers to differentiate any retail setting, while also supporting grassroots manufacturing and entrepreneurs. At Glee we’ll also be letting our new president, Primeur’s Sales Director, Jenny Douthwaite, take the reins. Jenny has some great ideas for her presidency including new membership benefits which we hope to announce soon. You’ll also get to see Jenny at the wider GIMA events, which offer something else to look forward to in the second half of 2022. Key events to look out for include the GIMA Awards judging day, which will see our panel of judges deliberate over which members or member products they should crown winners and the awards themselves on October 20 which will no doubt be another glittering night of celebrations. Whatever your 2022 looks like we wish you all the very best. Don’t forget that GIMA remains available to all our members – new and old – and can support with a wide range of business support tools from market data and intellectual property and brand licensing to HR and insight into EPR and plastic packaging tax, strategic planning, e-commerce and sales and merchandising support.

….sales are still tracking above what we experienced in 2019, meaning the power of gardening is still very much alive…
