Perrywood fined £104,000

Local newspapers in Essex were reporting last week that Perrywood Garden Centre in Tiptree had been fined over £100,000 for failing to protect its employees from hazardous chemicals.

The fine was imposed by Basildon Magistrates’ Court as a result of an investigation by environmental health officers after an official complaint was raised by an employee in September 2017.

Alan Bourne, managing director of Perrywood Garden Centre and Nurseries Ltd, told the Essex County Standard: “We take the health and safety of our team and customers extremely seriously and have a number of policies and procedures in order to safeguard everyone at the garden centre.

“Unfortunately, an incident did occur in 2017 concerning a current member of staff.  Since then we have put additional policies and training in place to ensure that an incident like this does not occur again.”
