Cowells saved from becoming a housing estate

Cowell's Garden Centre has been saved after the family business bought its site from the landlord...

Cowell's Garden Centre in Woolsington, Newcastle, has been saved after the family business bought its site from the landlord.

The future of Cowell’s Garden Centre, at Woolsington on the edge of Newcastle, had been put in doubt with its lease on the site coming to an end and the landlord pursuing plans to sell it for a housing development.

The multi-award winning garden centre was originally set up by Alan and Mavis Cowell in 1978, and a search for a new home for the business had been launched in 2012 by current companies co-directors: Alan and Mavis’ children, Martin Cowell and Jane Keating.

By 2017, however, the family were still struggling to find a new home for the business and the company brought in a team of advisors who suggested the business offer to buy the land from the landlord.

That offer has now been accepted and the company has been saved form closure.

In their local paper, The Chronicle, Martin Cowell said: “We are delighted to have been able to safeguard the future of the business and our employees’ livelihoods as we celebrate four great decades, and we look ahead to the next 40 years, and beyond.

“Securing the site forms a key part of our strategic growth plan which will allow the business to thrive, as we further expand our range of plants and nursery products over the next three to five years, whilst creating new jobs.”

The decision to buy the site was suggested by consultants at Gordon Brown Law Firm. It was negotiated by Gerald Eve, who was supported by accountants Tait Walker. HSBC provided the finance for the acquisition.

Mr Cowell added: “Following a long period of uncertainty for the business, we can now call Woolsington our permanent home.

“We are extremely grateful to our team of trusted advisors at GBLF, Tait Walker and HSBC who all worked seamlessly as a team to help us navigate what was a complicated process. Working in such a collaborative way was integral to ensuring we were able to acquire the site.

“We are also very thankful to our dedicated team, which has remained loyal to us, as well as the local community who have supported us over the years.”

“Business as usual” at up-for-sale Wyevale Garden Centres, admits CEO

Wyevale Garden Centre CEO Roger Mclaughlan has revealed to GTN Xtra that it’s “business as usual” while the company considers offers on its 145 centres."We are well set up for peak trading, and all colleagues are focused on ensuring we continue to deliver best-in-class retail experiences for our customers," he said...

Wyevale Garden Centre CEO Roger Mclaughlan has revealed to GTN Xtra that it’s “business as usual” while the company considers offers on its 145 centres.

Owner Terra Firma announced last month that the garden centre group was officially up for sale either as a whole, as sub groups or as individual garden centres. Christie & Co, the agents handling the sale,  have placed a June 26 deadline for first round bids.

Wyevale Garden Centres achieved record-breaking sales figures during May, and Roger Mclaughlan was quick to point out the centres were performing well in the current climate.

How pleased are you with the way the group is performing at the moment?

We are very pleased with our performance. Customers are reacting well to the changes we have made, and we are delighted to have delivered a record breaking May performance.

Is there a danger that this level of performance could drop during 'for sale' process?

Our focus is 'business as usual'. We are well set up for peak trading, and all colleagues are focused on ensuring we continue to deliver best-in-class retail experiences for our customers.

How are you keeping staff morale high during a period of uncertainty?

Great people are at the heart of our business. As part of our turnaround strategy, we've invested in our colleagues and our customers are already seeing the difference. We believe that any future owner would see the value in our colleagues. We have held conversations with our colleagues across the business since the sale was announced and very much believe in the importance of maintaining an open dialogue with them to ensure any concerns they may have are addressed directly.

Do you have a current winning formula throughout your portfolio of garden centres?

Our current strategy is focused on building and strengthening the fundamentals of our business and delivering a more compelling customer proposition and experience. We have improved ranges, increased stock availability, and delivered exceptional garden centres standards. This has been delivered through the focus on our strategic goals of investing in people, upgrading systems and controls as well as improving the supply chain process.

How important will it be for any prospective buyer(s) of your garden centres to take this formula on board in future?

We believe that any prospective buyer will see the value in the strategy we've set out and implemented over the last two years, including investment in our people, the core infrastructure, systems and processes of the business.

Is your main focus still on driving the business forward until any sale is agreed?

Yes, we are very much committed to continuing the implementation of our turnaround strategy and running our business for the benefit of our colleagues and customers. Our focus is 'business as usual' and customer experience sits at the heart of our strategy and that has not changed.

Do you hope to remain with the business in future?

Together with Anthony Jones, Chief Financial Officer, I will continue to lead the business.

Full details of all Wyevale centres can be accessed via a website: www.wyevalegardencentres.christie.com. By registering on the site and completing a Non Disclosure Agreement, interested parties will have all the relevant information about the sites so that offers can be placed by the end of the first round process on June 26th.

While bids and offers are worked on to buy the 145 Wyevale centres, operational garden centre teams will be paying more attention to the June weather in the hope that further year on year gains can be made in the quest for parity on sales by the mid year point.

Strikes garden centre destroyed by fire in April says it will be “business as usual” within weeks, when a new temporary building opens its doors.

A 2,025 square metre structure, including a kitchen, café, retail area and toilets, is being built at the centre and should be open by mid-July.

The new building, on an adjoining field, will be used for the next 12-18 months until Strikes can be permanently rebuilt from scratch.

David Clark, project manager for the Strikes Garden Centre temporary building, said: “Obviously the fire has been devastating for local customers and our colleagues. We’re not a centre that just sells plants and flowers, the local public and people from far and wide will visit Strikes for days out. The garden centre interacts with the community and is proud of its synergy with neighbourhood schools and colleges.

“Unfortunately, this fire has come at possibly the busiest time of the year for a garden centre. We are immensely grateful that when the fire hit, the building was unoccupied and that there were no injuries to members of the public, our colleagues or to the fire service. Thankfully, we’re pleased to say that we won’t be out of action for too long, and our new building from Spaciotempo will be as good as new and business as usual.”

Highfield Garden World welcomes third generation

The 132-strong team at Highfield Garden World in Gloucestershire now includes members of not two but three generations of the founding Greenway family. Emma Greenway, 25, has recently joined her father, aunt and grandmother in the family business.

The 132-strong team at Highfield Garden World in Gloucestershire now includes members of not two but three generations of the founding Greenway family. Emma Greenway, 25, has recently joined her father, aunt and grandmother in the family business.

In its 97-year history, Highfield has gone from a small business growing willow for basket-makers to the popular (10,000 customers a week) restaurant and retail destination it is today.

Emma's arrival is the latest in a long line of changes which the Greenways have implemented and navigated over the years. She spent a couple of years in the business previously, before leaving to start a family and work in property for a while. Now she's back, and by all accounts it's for good.

Emma commented:  "I feel proud and excited to be back in the family business and part of future plans. In my current role I am part of the cash office team and I am responsible for processing the takings from each department every day for analysis.

"I also run the various customer coach trips which we organise to take customers to lovely events and places around the country. The combination of these two means I spend proper time getting to know some of our customers, and it also gives me really useful insight into what sells well and when across the whole site."

Joan Greenway, MD, founder and Emma's grandmother, said: "It's great that another generation of the family is now involved, and Emma certainly has the determination you need to succeed in what is a very competitive market."

Emma's father Tim Greenway added: "She's definitely not shy in voicing ideas and opinions, and we don't always see eye to eye, but I know of old that's all part and parcel of working with family!  As she gains experience and insight her contribution will become increasingly important."

When asked about any future plans for Highfield, Emma said: "I am still learning and taking everything on board at the moment but I can see our restaurant has been a fantastic success to the point that it's now full to capacity, so I think as a business we would benefit from looking at ways to develop that further.

"Helping customers with busy lifestyles get the most from whatever outside space and free time they may have is vitally important and we are all working to expand our range of instant impact, zero maintenance products going forward - for example items like colourful pots and planters, garden mirrors, good-looking outdoor furniture and even artificial grass. In fact I'm having some put down in my own little patch of outside space this summer!"

Four women from Stratford Garden Centre – Liz, Julie, Caroline and Helen – will be walking 26 miles of the Northumberland Coast on Saturday, July 21, to raise monies for Macmillan Cancer Support.

"We all have very personal reasons for doing this walk and do so in memory of a family member, friend or colleague that have lost their life or are currently fighting this awful disease," said Helen Lloyd.

"If with your support we could just do a little something to help with future research and awareness of this horrible disease, so that others can be more knowledgeable, prepared and perhaps have a little longer with a loved one, it would mean so much to us all."

Supermarket giant Morrisons has applied for permission to build a garden centre on land near its store in Falkirk.

The application lodged with Falkirk Council planners, which could be decided upon as early as June 14, is looking to create a garden centre facility at the front entrance of the Morrisons store in Brockville Park.

Details on the planning application reveal that if the centre is given the go-ahead, the number of car parking spaces at the store would be reduced by six, from 555 to 549.

The firm has also applied for advertising consent to display banners at the site.

April was a rollercoaster month for garden centre sales

Sales at garden centres across the country were up and down during April according to the Garden Centre Association’s Barometer of Trade report. Mark Winchester, Managing Director at Blackbrooks Garden Centre in East Sussex, said: “It was very much a month of two halves."

Sales at garden centres across the country were up and down during April according to the Garden Centre Association’s Barometer of Trade report.

Outdoor plant sales remained down at -12.73% compared to the same month last year but could have been much worse if the bad weather had continued says the GCA.

Iain Wylie, GCA Chief Executive, said: “Sales in April were very up and down. The first two and a half weeks saw continued negative sales until the weather turned as we headed towards May. This means that overall sales were down for the month, however we expect to see them pick up in May after a record breaking start during the Bank Holiday weekend.

“We believe that had the bad weather continued for the rest of the month, the negative sales could have been much worse. Sales in some non-traditional categories brought some reassurance as our April results revealed sales in catering were up 1.33% and clothing up 15.92%.”

Gardeners started to prepare for the season as seed and bulb sales were also up at 5.75% and houseplant sales were up 7.13%.

Sales in garden sundries were down -11.16%, furniture and barbecue sales were down -11.12% and pets and aquatics were down -6.37%.

Gift sales were down -4.5%, hard landscaping was down -20.6% and food hall and farm shop sales were down -10.23%.

Overall April sales were down -8.36% with a year to date change of -10.86%.

Mark Winchester, Managing Director at Blackbrooks Garden Centre in East Sussex, said: “April was very much a month of two halves as far as sales are concerned, suffering massive dips of up to -36% in earlier weeks but then strong gains of +30% for later weeks.

“Overall our April sales were flat compared to 2017, which we were happy with considering the poor start to the month. We did not offer any discount to combat the poor start as spring always arrives eventually every year. Knowing when however is still a mystery!”

The GCA BoT reports are compiled using actual sales figures and provide an up-to-date trading position statement. They are made available mid-month following the end of the prior month after all member garden centres have submitted their results.

Plans to double size of Otter garden centre

Otter Nurseries in Torquay will nearly double in size, creating 70 new jobs if major expansion plans are given the go-ahead.

The garden centre is applying for planning permission to expand and redevelop the existing Styles Garden Leisure Centre in Moles Lane on the edge of Torquay. The lane would have to be widened if the plans are approved.

It would means some of the disused greenhouses will be demolished, another 253 car parking spaces created, and a new retail building would include a café.

Recommending approval, the report says: “The development will generate an additional 70 full time jobs, providing approximately 100 in total and is likely to have spin-off economic benefits within the local area.

“Otter Nursery have been operating on the former Styles site but it does not meet their requirements and it is notable that the existing car park is small and is often over-capacity resulting in on street parking on the surrounding rural lanes.

“Otter Nurseries grow 80 per cent of the plants they sell and part of the site will be retained for horticulture. This is a use that tends to require a countryside location.

“The design and materials of the main building are appropriate for its rural setting. The orientation, layout and use of solar panels and wind assisted ventilation cowels will help reduce the buildings carbon footprint. The carpark is large and it will be important to secure a high quality landscaping scheme to soften the appearance including strategic tree planting.

“Concern has been raised by residents at Higher Compton Barton about loss of privacy and noise disturbance from the café and delivery under-croft, but it is considered that there will be no significant adverse impact on residential amenity.

“The development proposes the redevelopment of a brown field site for a larger, enhanced garden centre on an out of centre location within the countryside with no access to alternative forms of transport and with no safe pedestrian access. The location would not normally be considered to be sustainable, however the use as a garden centre is one which attracts car borne visitors."

Kent & Stowe at IWM 060618_GTN001.jpg

Kent & Stowe has launched a unique collection of gifts using the WW2 ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign, taking inspiration from British civilians who grew their own throughout WW2.

Products and packaging draw on the images of the ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign where every possible piece of land was turned into vegetable patches to help Britain become self-sufficient during the conflict. Today, the renewed interest in ‘Grow your own’ is inspiring people of all ages to develop an interest and learn new skills by producing fresh home grown produce.

Fascinating information about living during this period is incorporated within the products. At the outbreak of WW2, Britain only produced a third of the food needed, however by 1943 there were over 1.4 million allotments in Britain. The moat at the Tower of London was given over to growing vegetables and even the Royal Family sacrificed their beloved rose beds for growing onions.

There are ten gardening products in the initial collection, including attractive and practical items such as a Pointed Hand Trowel, Herb Pot Set, Watering Can, Carrier Apron, Plant Mister & Snips and a nest of Storage Tins; ideal for storing baking or household items.

Uniquely included with each gift are a set Garden Tips and Recipes from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. In the booklet you will find delicious recipes for strawberry jam and ginger sponge pudding.

Items from the range make beautiful gifts for those with a love of gardening or history.

Kent & Stowe has agreed a 3 year partnership with Imperial War Museums for the exclusive use of imagery and branding in gardening related merchandise.

Extensive trialling leads Syngenta Flowers to resilient Imara impatiens walleriana

It took scientists years to develop Imara, the new impatiens walleriana from Syngenta Flowers which is more resistant to downy mildew than ever before,

  • Research confirms resilience against downy mildew
  • Tested for performance in the greenhouse and garden
  • Provides reliable, consistent growth and summer-long flowering

Imara®, the new impatiens walleriana from Syngenta Flowers more resistant to downy mildew than ever before, took scientists years to develop. During intensive, large-scale trialling, Imara® out-performed other varieties even when exposed to the disease. The testing confirmed the series has strong resilience against downy mildew and will perform well for gardeners lasting until first frost.

“Syngenta has been committed to bringing back impatiens walleriana and we spent the past nine years developing Imara®,” said Joost Kos, Head of Research & Development at Syngenta Flowers. “We found a natural source of disease-resistant plants and started a program for classical breeding. Imara® have been tested for performance in gardens and greenhouses so consumers and growers benefit from this next generation of impatiens walleriana.”

“Imara® have proven to offer compact, long flowering periods and exceptional colour at retail, in addition to their strong resilience to downy mildew,” said Kos. “We are very excited to bring the joy of impatiens walleriana back to consumers and for growers to add the plant back into production without fear of downy mildew’s destruction.”

The team at Syngenta evaluated over 5,000 seedlings to find genetics that would not succumb to downy mildew. Once discovered, Imara® were also tested in greenhouse and field trials for plant habit, flowering time, flower quality and uniformity. Their performance was confirmed by trials at Syngenta Jealott’s Hill Research Centre and independent trials at Stockbridge Technology Centre in 2017. The time lapse video shown here compares Imara® to existing commercial varieties at Syngenta.

“The trials at both Jealott’s Hill and Stockbridge were heavily infected with obligate biotrophic Plasmopara obducens,” said John Gordon, technical specialist at Syngenta Flowers. “Only Imara® displayed a significant level of tolerance to even severe levels of infection.”

Syngenta continues to invest in the development of Imara® and hopes to add more colours to the series to meet the needs of consumers, retailers and growers. It is currently available in white, red, rose, violet, orange, orange star and a mix.

EU's PEST committee must separate fact from fiction

The European Parliament's temporary committee on pesticides must take a common sense approach to regulation if it is to make a useful contribution, according to Anthea McIntyre MEP, UK Conservative spokesman on Agriculture...

The European Parliament's temporary committee on pesticides must take a common sense approach to regulation if it is to make a useful contribution, a leading member said.

Anthea McIntyre MEP, UK Conservative spokesman on Agriculture, told a Brussels debate on pesticides regulation to bear in mind that the so-called PEST committee was a political initiative by certain political groups with an eye to next year’s European elections. It had a temporary lifespan and a short timeline.

Miss McIntyre, Conservative MEP for the West Midlands, was a panelist in the debate "How should we regulate pesticides?", organised by the publisher Euractiv.

She said: "The whole process is relatively short, it will only produce an opinion, not legislation. I nevertheless would welcome the opportunity for MEPs to ask questions to experts in a format that allows a 'ping-pong' of questions and answers back and forth."

Miss McIntyre said that the argument for some people was not about whether glyphosate was safe or not. It was about whether we should authorise any chemicals for use in food and agricultural production.

She said: "In my opinion, we should authorise them because we need them if we are to maintain food security. We must have a common sense approach to this issue.”

Miss McIntyre rejected an assertion by an agricultural trade union that farmers generally used pesticides inappropriately.

She said chemicals were expensive, so farmers would use the smallest amount possible. Precision farming and integrated pest-management methods were making sure pesticides were applied in an ever more efficient and environmentally-friendly way.

“I hope that something sensible will come out of the PEST committee and I hope it will deliver on its mandate. We need to provide science-based policy making and distinguish fact from fiction.”

Help pondkeepers prepare for Summer with Tetra

With the weather warming up, many fishkeepers will be looking for advice on caring for their pond this summer. But, with so much information out there, how can retailers really be sure what to recommend?

To help, Dave Hulse, Tetra’s Technical Expert has answered some of the most common questions around summer ponds, so retailers can rest easy, knowing they’re giving their consumers the right advice for a healthy pond.

Q. How can pondkeepers ensure their fish stay healthy over the summer?

Dave says; “There are many things pondkeepers can do to support their fish and make sure they stay healthy and happy, but one of the most important things is to ensure they are feeding a well-rounded diet that gives them all of the nutrients they need. Tetra Pond Variety Sticks include BioActive Formula for increased disease resistance and combine three different varieties of food to provide a nourishing yet varied diet for all pond fish.”

Q. How can pondkeepers deal with the increased algae in their pond?

Dave says; “Algae growth blooms in the summer due to the warmer weather creating more nitrate and phosphate nutrients and the greater length of more direct sunlight. Pondkeepers should use treatments all year round to keep their pond crystal clear but should be extra vigilant in the warmer months.

It is vital to act early to prevent blooms of algae, so using treatments to lower phosphate levels in the spring will really help pondkeepers prepare for the summer months. Performing regular partial water changes and dosing the pond with Tetra PhosphateMinus and Tetra AlgoFin will also help keep algae at bay, and lead to a healthy pond with crystal clear waters.”

Q. How can my customers ensure their water stays crystal clear?

Dave says; “The summer is where your pond makes a really great garden feature, especially when it’s looking in good condition. Keeping ponds clear and tidy by cutting back any plants, trees or shrubbery will not only help your pond stand out but also prevent loose leaves and debris from falling into the water, which if left can rot and affect water quality.”

Q: I’ve heard that aeration of the pond is much more important in the summer than the winter, is this correct?

Dave says; “Warm waters won’t hold as much dissolved oxygen as cold water, yet in summer, pond fish require higher oxygen levels due to the warmer weather. This means that aeration devices, such as filter outlets and air pumps, must be working flat out, especially at night when the photosynthetic activity of plants ceases. Pondkeepers shouldn’t rely solely on so-called ‘oxygenating weed’ to supply their fish with oxygen. Advise your customers to look out for fish looking tired in the margins of the pond or loitering near aeration devices as a sign that their pond isn’t oxygenated enough. Tetra Test O2 kits tests oxygen levels easily and precisely, allowing pondkeepers to react before it gets too serious.”

It’s now even easier for customers to understand exactly what makes a healthy pond with Tetra’s new pond packaging, which offers clear and modern labelling to help communicate product uses and benefits more easily for fishkeepers. Tetra’s 6in1 test strips also allow pond keepers to test their pond water quickly and easily and can download the Tetra Aquatics App to scan the strip and understand the water parameters and any steps that need to be taken.

Pet firm fined £30,000 for supplying ‘fire-risk’ cushions to garden centre

Rosewood Pet Products Ltd, who supplied cushions to Coletta and Tyson garden centre in Woodmansey, Yorkshire, has been fined £30,000 after the items were found to represent a serious fire risk...

Rosewood Pet Products Ltd, who supplied cushions to Coletta and Tyson garden centre in Woodmansey, Yorkshire, has been fined £30,000 after the items were found to represent a serious fire risk.

Beverley Magistrates Court heard that tests revealed they could easily catch fire as well as failing to comply with fire safety regulations as they did not display permanent labelling.

Director Mark Bolland appeared on behalf of the company, where he pleaded guilty to both offences.

The court heard how officers from East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s trading standards team had visited the garden centre in December 2017 and saw cushions, featuring the faces of dogs and cats, for sale in the homeware and gift section of the store.

The officers inspected the cushions and found they were not labelled correctly and having raised concerns with garden centre staff, the cushions were removed from sale immediately.

The items were sent for independent testing which revealed the filling of the cushions was highly flammable.

The court heard how Rosewood had not included permanent labelling on the cushions to confirm they complied with fire safety regulations as they saw themselves solely as a pet supplies company.

The company claimed the items were not intended for decorative use around the home but for pet use only, and therefore claimed the cushions were not required to conform to the same flammability and labelling requirements.

But magistrates heard how the cushions were being marketed as gifts for pets as well as owners on the company’s website and had labels on them stating “pet faces – a pillow for you or your pet”.

Rosewood Pet Products Ltd was fined £15,000 for each offence, and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £2,651.23 and a victim surcharge of £70.

31 Novelties for the Novelty showcase at Garden Trials and Trade

Eleven companies have registered a total of 31 Novelties for the Novelties showcase at the Garden Trials and Trade 2018 which will take place for the first time on 12, 13 and 14 June in the Plantarium building at the International Trade Centre in Boskoop-Hazerswoude...

Eleven companies have registered a total of 31 Novelties for the Novelties showcase at the Garden Trials and Trade 2018 which will take place for the first time on 12, 13 and 14 June in the Plantarium building at the International Trade Centre in Boskoop-Hazerswoude.

The novelties submitted by the participants will be assessed and awarded by the independent panel of expert judges from the KVBC (The Royal Society for Boskoop Cultures). The showcase held during the Garden Trials and Trade allows novelties to be presented at their finest moment.

"A nice, diverse range was registered in early summer for this Novelty showcase", says Ronald Houtman, who approves registrations on behalf of the KVBC. "Although it is noteworthy that many hydrangeas have now been registered. This may be related to the fact that the natural flowering period for the hydrangea occurs at this time of year. This means the plants do not have to be forced to show off their full bloom."

One-third of the entries consist of perennials. Apart from that, there are nine hydrangeas, one avenue tree, one conifer, one creeper and nine shrubs.

Of course, the novelties will have a prominent place on the floor of the trade fair. The novelties are presented in the area immediately after the entrance doors. The descriptions of the novelties can be found under the tab Novelties on the website www.gardentrials.com.

Garden Trials and Trade will be held from 12 to 14 June 2018 in the Plantarium building at the International Trade Centre in Hazerswoude-Dorp. The opening hours are from 09:00 to 18:00 on each day. Sufficient parking spaces (free parking) are available close to the trade fair location. Entry is free for trade visitors with a promotional ticket and/or through digital pre-registration via www.gardentrials.com.

With an additional 18 varieties, Johnsons has expanded its organic vegetable offering for the 2019 season.

Johnsons Brand Manager Helen Clayton comments: “We have seen a definite rise in sales of our organic varieties over the past few years, increasing by 79% since the 2015 season.

"Topping that list is our Tomato Gardeners Delight organic variety which has risen 169% over the same period. It is also a growing trend across Europe and we believe it will continue as more and more people choose to switch to organic gardening.”

All the most popular vegetable categories are now available as organic in the Johnsons range and all have been approved by Organic Farmers and Growers Ltd.

As well as being available within the main Johnsons collections, retailers can also order the range as a stand-alone hot spot display, to allow them to be added as a separate themed feature in stores.

Helen says “With the extended Johnsons range, our customers can now find a comprehensive selection of organic vegetable seed varieties, in one place.”

New varieties added include Chard Verde a Costa Argentata (RRP £2.15 for 125 seeds) and Climbing French Bean Limka (RRP £3.45 for 50 seeds).

Worfield Plants introduce new sales executive ahead of HTA show

Worfield Plants in Shropshire has extended its team with the appointment of Jamie Ablett to the role of Sales Executive in the South East...

Worfield Plants in Shropshire has extended its team with the appointment of Jamie Ablett to the role of Sales Executive in the South East. The appointment was made as a result of Worfield’s continued year on year growth in the retail market and its commitment to help customers maximise year-round plant sales.

With more than 14 years’ experience in direct sales, Jamie has a wealth of commercial experience in new business development and account management that is already benefitting Worfield Plants and its independent garden centres and retail customers.  Jamie’s background, working in marketing-led businesses, also brings fresh new-thinking to the company and how customers can reap increased sales opportunities.

Jamie, who studied Horticulture originally and has a passion for plants said: “I’m delighted to be working for Worfield Plants and to be able to use both my plant knowledge and my sales background to help customers across the South East.  I’m also excited to create new relationships and ensure prospects are aware of our exceptional quality range of alpines, perennials and grasses.”

Exhibiting at the HTA Show on the 19-20 June for the first time, Jamie added: “A key part of this service-led role is to give customers the ability to plan ahead and reserve plant stock for the upcoming season; provide information on impulse lines for hot spots and bed-end promotions; and to offer expert advice on how customers can maximise plant sales using our 12-month full-plant listing catalogue – I’m looking forward to meeting visitors attending HTA and giving them a first look at our new 2019 catalogue.”

For more than 50 years, Worfield Plants has been supplying an unrivalled range of high quality plants to independent garden centres and retail outlets from its nursery in Shropshire. The company supplies an extensive British grown range of Alpines, Ferns, Grasses, Heathers and Herbaceous plants; and every year aims to introduce 100 new plants to its retail listing.

As part of  the Boningale group, Worfield also works with an extensive  network of UK growers, to supply Barbara Austin, Bare rooted plants, Climbers, Ericaceous, Hedging, Herbs, Rootballed plants, Shrubs, Topiary, Trees and Wildflowers.

Plantarium 2018: the ideal place to present your company

Plantarium 2018 is almost fully booked, there are only a few places still available...

Plantarium 2018 is almost fully booked, there are only a few places still available. The first registrations for the novelty showcases and the press award have been received. “As organisation, we are happy with the progress of the registrations. We notice that the sector is once again in a positive flow”, says trade fair manager Jos van Lint.

“Of course, a lot of things still have to be arranged over the coming months, but a positive mood makes this even more of a pleasure. We notice that the participants are also enthusiastic about their participation and they are already very busy preparing for their participation in the trade fair”, says Van Lint.

Royal Flora Holland team

Recently, Plantarium launched an appeal for 11 growers to take in a special position at the trade fair. Royal Flora Holland, in the person of Hans Vlekken, reacted spontaneously and will take up this special position with 11 growers. These are: Andre van der Burg Plantenkwekerij, Arno Gerdes, Hemmje Baumschule, Huelsmann Baumschule, Je-Deco, Boomkwekerij Laban, Lehei GMBH, Boomkwekerij ’t mannetje, de Meyer, Saterplant GMBH and Warnken Baumschule.

Making good use of additional space

De Jong Tuinplanten from Made has also already started preparations. They are specialised in the growing of a large assortment of ground cover garden plants in pots. “This year, we have a slightly larger stand than previous years, and we want to make the most of these additional square meters. Apart from our current assortment, we will prominently display our novelties, which we have also registered for the novelty showcase”, says Piet de Jong.

Technology

Agricom from Langbroek is a new participant as a supplier. During the trade fair, they will re-introduce the Combi-trac, a light machine which is imminently suited to container fields. “The Combi-trac can be widely used because it can be driven on both firm and loose ground. Thanks to its low weight and with optional double air at the front and the four wheels at the back, the machine is very suitable for driving on the container field”, says Hans van Blokland. “The hydraulic turntable ensures that the Combi-trac is very manoeuverable, and with the bespoke forked rake for pots and the pallet fork, the machine can be used in a multifunctional way at the nursery.” The Combi-trac will be put through its paces on the outside demo-square.

Largest stand ever

This year, Arie Bouman Tuinplanten B.V. will be prominently present at Plantarium. With over 250 m2, their stand is the largest stand they ever had at an external trade fair. But then, they do have a lot to present. Dennis van Willegen was happy to give us a glimpse: “At Plantarium, we will be presenting two totally new rose concepts. The first line is to replace the current concept, which has already been around for about ten years. The second concept has a limited number of varieties, super high-end and an amazing way of presenting. A way which has never been seen in the plant world! Both concepts will have a brand name, but we are keeping those under wraps for now. Our aim is to work with the best varieties of the known rose-breeders, in order to contribute to the ultimate garden experience of the consumer.

Plantarium 2018 will be held from 22 to 24 August 2018 at Denemarkenlaan 9, which can be reached via the familiar car park at the Greenpark Boskoop. A few places are still available. Information and registration forms can be found on www.plantarium.nl. Registration is done on a first-come-first-served basis if locations are still available.

“While 25-year-old Chris will report to Ray Jenkins, our Production Director of the Transplant Division, and will be responsible for supporting all production activities, stock control, production records and crop costing. Chris found his vocation in our Transplant Division as he is interested in the production side of the business and enjoys working within a dedicated team who are outside in all weather. Kyle and Chris both undertook Wyevale Nurseries’ in-house, two-year, Management Trainee Programme, which covered all areas of the business.

Andy added: “This year we will be launching our Graduate Trainee Programme, which is not only open to those wishing to go into nursery production but any element of the business including finance, IT, sales or marketing. The programme is open to graduates of all degree disciplines.

“This is a two-year programme that covers all areas of the business. What we are looking for from our potential Graduate Trainees is a positive ‘can-do’ attitude and that they enjoy being challenged to come up with solutions.

“We want them to be innovative using not only their ideas but also assessing and supporting others’ ideas. Successful applicants will be responsible for their own learning and should be able to demonstrate a proactive attitude towards learning opportunities. We want candidates to also be career-minded, ambitious and flexible in their approach.”

The programme will be delivered through on the job training, attending plant identification training, visiting other nurseries, attending trade shows and conferences, attending any external courses if required, project work shadowing managers/supervisors, observing and participating in meetings.

Assessment will be through regular reviews and assessing performance against agreed objectives. Each trainee will meet with the Programme Co-ordinator, Steve Pandeli on a regular basis. This will be to support the trainee and to conduct regular constructive reviews.

Andy added: “Upon successful completion of the programme, it is anticipated that we shall be able to match trainees to a suitable role with the company which would benefit from their particular strengths.”

Applicants should forward a copy of their current CV with a covering letter describing why they are the right candidate for the programme to stevep@wyevale-nurseries.co.uk

Mr Fothergill’s Sales Conference was visited by Love Your Garden presenter David Domoney who gave an enthusiastic presentation about gardening and shared his experience of garden transformations.

David Domoney joined forces with the vegetable experts at Mr Fothergill’s to develop David Domoney’s Get Growing seed range for the 2018 season. Aimed at newcomers to grow-your-own, the collection includes 66 of the most popular vegetable varieties and 10 easy to use seed mats and tapes. Packet backs offer simple, jargon-free instructions and a QR code links to further ‘on the spot’ advice from David.

Packet fronts employ easy reference icons designed to sell the simplicity of the products. In store, the stand-alone range is displayed A to Z, and includes smaller pea and bean packets more suited to smaller scale growing and beginner gardeners than traditional pea and bean packaging.

Mr Fothergill’s reports that sales of David Domoney’s Get Growing seed range has exceeded initial expectations, the collection has beaten the season’s forecast.
Ian Cross, Mr Fothergill’s retail marketing manager says: “We are really pleased with the positive reaction we have had from retailers and their customers.

David Domoney’s Get Growing range is the perfect starting point for everyone new to growing vegetables from seed and fits perfectly with David’s passion for encouraging everyone to discover the life-long joy that gardening can provide.”

Record-breaking month for up-for-sale Wyevale

The heatwave of the first May bank holiday delivered Wyevale Garden Centres' highest ever trading weekend – up 61% on the same weekend in 2017 – followed by a record week of sales, up 39% on the prior year. The heatwave of the first May bank holiday delivered Wyevale Garden Centres' highest ever trading weekend – up 61% on the same weekend in 2017 – followed by a record week of sales, up 39% on the prior year. It's good news for the 145-centre group, which has been put up for sale by owner Terra Firma.

The garden centre retailer has sold over 11 million plants this year to date – enough to wrap around the 117-miles of the M25 more than 2.5 times when placed side-by-side.

Compost proved a strong-selling category for the month, with over 800,000 bags sold; enough to fill the London Olympic swimming pool over 11 times. Pot bedding plants experienced their biggest-selling month to date, up 30% on last year with over £1.2 million plants sold. In anticipation of the hotter temperatures, watering sales soared 22% YOY in May, with over 4,000 hoses, 20,000 accessories and 12,000 watering cans sold.

Roger McLaughlan, CEO of Wyevale Garden Centres, commented: “The later spring has brought with it high demand from gardeners as they make up for lost time. We’ve seen a spectacular lift throughout May and are confident this appetite will continue into the season ahead.”

Wyevale Garden Centres, which has an annual footfall of over 45 million, is attributing its phenomenal sales growth to the late arrival of spring and the instantaneous change from winter temperatures to high summer heat. Pent-up gardeners who had been waiting to get out and enjoy their green spaces have used the unseasonal May temperatures to get planting and investing in their gardens.

The dramatic change in the weather has also heavily influenced the types of plants being purchased by customers, either to replace those damaged by the frosts or to make the most of the later flowering season.

Traditional bedding plants such as Osteospermums, Dahliettas and Marguerites were among the best-sellers, while Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Heathers, vegetable seeds, tomato plants and summer flowering bulbs saw large growth as the natural seasons continue to run 2-3 weeks later.

Shrubs also performed strongly in May with plants such as Lavenders, Hydrangeas and Acers up on last year as customers replace plants in their garden following the exceptionally cold spring.

The trends of Chelsea Flower Show filtered through to Wyevale Garden Centres, with new best-sellers including Salvias, Geums, Lupins and Hostas as the company promoted its Chelsea favourites.

Over the past year, Wyevale Garden Centres has significantly grown many of its product ranges outside of its core horticultural offering, including interiors, décor, food and beverage, and gifting.

The extensive retail proposition is complemented by an events series tailored to key holidays on the calendar, such as school half-terms, Easter and Christmas, which are said to be fundamental in growing the business.

McLaughlan added: “The traditional garden centre is changing and becoming much more of a destination where people come to learn, shop, dine and play. Our expert team of buyers and retail staff are continually broadening our offer to keep abreast of these new demands, introducing new product categories and ways to engage with the customer on and off-line.”

With over 10 million visits to the website per year, and a fast-growing social media following of over 140,000, Wyevale Garden Centres’ digital platforms have become instrumental to offering added support, advice and inspiration for curious shoppers and gardening enthusiasts.

New and engaging initiatives such as gardening ‘jobs of the month’ and DIY projects are being championed across digital channels and in-centre, helping to encourage new and existing audiences to pick up their tools and get gardening.

“Our recent studies showed that gardening is often seen to be complicated and confusing, with 69% of under-45s believing they have fewer gardening skills than their parents. In order to demystify gardening, we’ve focused our efforts on our communications, both digital and in-centre, to offer simple, effective solutions and inspiration for gardeners at all skill levels.” said McLaughlan.

Garden centre business back to normality...almost!

After the volatility of the past few months, the late May Bank Holiday weekend was a week where garden centre trading dropped back to normality.

Total volume sales were on a par with the same week in five of the past seven years, and plant sales were only 4% up on last year, giving growers a chance to catch up with demand.

The GTN Bestsellers data doesn’t include Bank Holiday Monday though, so we need to wait until next week to report on the last potential peak of the season.

The thing most likely to lower the peak is the availability of plants. “Apologies for lacking availability, we and our growers have been decimated,” one nursery supplioer told a customer earleir this week.  Watch this space…

Gardman lands on National TV for the first time

Garden and bird care brand Gardman landed on UK TV this week with a sponsorship on ITV’s Good Morning Britain...

Garden and bird care brand Gardman landed on UK TV this week with a sponsorship on ITV’s Good Morning Britain.

They were sponsors of a new Garden Hacks segment on the breakfast show where viewers were given simple tips to get their gardens summer ready. Across the week commencing May 28th the sponsorship saw two 10” idents. The sponsorship marks the debut of the well-known brand on TV as it promotes its speciality brands of wild bird care.

Marketing Director Will Hemmings said: “This was a great chance to put Gardman on the map. We supply more than 1,500 garden centres across the UK but we need to get the brand and our speciality of wild bird care more front and centre with consumers who are increasingly loving the idea of attracting birds to their gardens.”

The idents show a home garden scene with domesticated birds bringing the area to life by popping in to feed. The strapline is ‘Bringing your garden to live with Good Morning Britain’s Garden Hacks, sponsored by Gardman.’

Said Will: “We worked with a bird handler who had worked with the owls on the Harry Potter films so we’re in very good company.”

‘A Recipe for Growth’ was the theme of this year’s HTA Catering Conference, held on Tuesday and Wednesday, in the new venue of the beautiful Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The two-day event and exhibition provided a great forum for looking at opportunities and challenges for garden centre catering with delegates feeding back that they found the event enjoyable, valuable and informative.

Keynote Speaker for day one was Jim Cregan, Jimmy’s Iced Coffee. He shared with us his story of how starting as a festival compère and labourer, he felt ashamed of how his girlfriend’s parents would describe him and adventured to Australia for exploration and inspiration.

Whilst there he discovered iced coffee, and on his return to the UK was appalled at the offerings available, packed with sugar and lacking in coffee kick.

Joining forces with his sister and with a little help from their parents, they developed Jimmy’s Iced Coffee, and with a lot of grit and determination it became the brand that it is today.

Jim shared with us his key points to making a brand something you are proud of achieving: ‘Hunger and drive’, ‘A real story’, ‘A plan’, ‘Rad products’, ‘An ability to trust your instinct’, ‘Learn to say ‘no’’, ‘Build an epic team’, ‘Build culture that people love’ and ‘Let money be a bi-product of your dream’.

He concluded the inspirational session with the quote; “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” – Mary Oliver.

The annual HTA Catering Conference dinner was also held in the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, with the drinks reception held in the sunshine on the beautiful terrace in front of the glasshouses.

Rosemary Shrager was the after-dinner speaker of the evening. Rosemary endeared herself to the nation when she took part in 'I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here' where she proved she could cook just about anything, anywhere.

Her latest programmes include The Big Family Cooking Showdown which aired on BBC 2 in 2017. Rosemary was also a part of the very successful The Real Marigold Hotel which aired in early 2016 on BBC to great acclaim and was nominated for and won a string of awards.

During her talk she endeared the audience with the tales of her career, from training with world renowned chefs, being cooking TVs best kept secret, and insights into her upcoming book and projects. She urged the audience to do more events in the evenings to maximise the foodie elements of their businesses.

Day two of the conference saw a strong focus on food. The day was started by Paul Hargreaves, Cotswold Fayre, giving us an insight into current and upcoming food trends.

Jane Land, Co-founder of Veganuary, discussed the shift towards veganism and the reasons behind this, and Boyd Douglas-Davies, Managing Director from Hillview Group, shared with us his insights from his trip to Australia and how they premiums their offerings to maximise on return.

There were also demonstrations from Eco-Chef Tom Hunt and Tom Styman-Heighton from Funnybones Foodservice.

The event concluded with a panel session, chaired by Boyd which saw Philippa Stubbs from British Garden Centres, Matthew Bent from Bents Garden & Home, and Greg Timmerman-Delves from Timmerman’s Garden Centre discuss issues such as recruitment, menu planning across different sites, car parking and growing produce for use in the garden centre kitchen.

Tong's Catering Supervisor recognised as a Rising Star

A Castleford catering supervisor has been awarded a place on a new training programme aimed at coaching and developing garden centre catering staff.

Following the success of the Garden Centre Association's (GCA) Rising Stars initiative, a new programme aimed at garden centre catering staff was launched at its conference in January and catering staff from all over the UK were invited to apply.

Susie Jarrett from Tong Garden Centre was awarded one of the ten coveted places on the programme that comprises four masterclasses designed to help staff to improve their knowledge and experience, as well as giving them exposure and insight in the wider market place.

Having completed the first masterclass at Barton Grange Garden Centre in Preston in April, where the group undertook a café survey and discussed financial control, presentation/merchandising and price comparison, Susie and the group were tasked with a business specific project that they will present to their peers at the second masterclass at Planters Garden Centre in Tamworth on 20th June.

Susie, who is responsible for rotas and promotions at Tong Garden Centre's busy 400 seater restaurant said: "I love creating promotions for themed menus like Pie Week, Wimbledon and ideas for seasonal and limited edition products, so my project is how to market our Tong -baked scone of the month, freshly made every day in our in store bakery.

Susie's line manager, Catharine Westmoreland, is very proud of her team member: "Susie is a valued member of our team and her commitment and passion are unquestionable.

"She has put in so much work out of hours to make the most of this amazing opportunity and I really hope that she gets the success that she deserves."

The third masterclass will be held in central London. This will be a tour of Central London cafés, restaurants and coffee shops to inspire the candidates, and stretch their boundaries.

Iain Wylie, Chief Executive of the GCA, said: "Between masterclasses, the Rising Stars will complete exercises on what they have learnt within their own garden centres and assess the performance of their centre's catering unit, try out new ideas and evaluate the results. Examples include benchmarking against local competition and researching good and bad examples of food presentation.

"For the fourth masterclass, the top five candidates will have a fantastic opportunity to spend some time in Creed's development kitchen with ex-England rugby captain, 2011 Celebrity MasterChef winner Phil Vickery MBE.

"Phil will also help coach and prepare the top five to present at our conference in January 2019. Conference delegates will then choose an overall winner, who will be crowned the ‘GCA Catering Rising Star 2018'."

Sponsored by Creed Foodservice and facilitated by Chris Brown from Turpin Smale Catering Consultants, the programme has been developed to highlight and develop the talented individuals in garden centre restaurants and cafés and to recognise the important role that catering plays in the industry.
