The new GARDENA StarCut Pro pruning loppers have been designed to make pruning trees and large shrubs easier and safer than ever. The StarCut Pro loppers can prune branches of up to six and a half metres high while standing firmly on the ground.
The StarCut Pro L can be extended from both the upper and lower sections, offering greater flexibility. This clever design makes the StarCut easier to store or transport in a car. The lightweight, well balanced design features a practical pulling strap, which runs inside the tool, so it doesn’t get tangled while working.
Engineered for power and precision, the StarCut Pro’s integrated gear-assisted transmission delivers outstanding cutting power of branches up to 32mm in diameter. The narrow cutting head can be easily adjusted to prune in hard-to-reach areas, while an integrated hook allows for quick removal of cut branches.
GARDENA has also introduced its new PowerCoat for the cutting blades, ensuring smooth, clean cuts and making it easy to wipe away sap or resin. Aligning with GARDENA’s commitment to sustainability, the StarCut Pro is also made from a high percentage of post-consumer recycled plastics.
Thanks to the newly developed adapter, the StarCut Pro can be combined with attachments from the GARDENA combisystem such as the fruit picker, berry picker, gutter cleaner and the 300 PP gardeners’ saw. The StarCut Pro saw is part of the StarCut Pro set, but can also be used as a single saw.
The new GARDENA StarCut Pro is available as an L and a shorter S variant. The new StarCut Pro will be available for the 2025 gardening season, alongside a brand-new range of cutting tools, including loppers and secateurs.

POTR designs and manufactures flat pack, self-watering planters made from waste, designed to be posted directly through your letterbox.
Origami innovation is used to transform recycled plastic into a sustainable, minimal pot engineered to take the guesswork out of plant care using the inbuilt watering system which keeps your flora thriving.
The design of the plant pot has remained largely unchanged for five millennia with little thought going into its carbon footprint. POTR has embraced a holistic approach to sustainable design, resulting in a unique product range which places environmental impact at the core of the product design.
A life cycle analysis of a traditional plant pot was conducted, uncovering the carbon hotspots associated with the entire product lifecycle. Surprisingly, shipping was identified as a major carbon footprint contributor with traditional plant pots due to shipping large, heavy and fragile volumes of air, often requiring single use protective wrapping. Manufactured in their thousands, these fragile objects require excess room on transportation which equates to high carbon footprints and expensive shipping costs.

This insight inspired the team to study origami, which led to the development of the flat-packed design, reducing the carbon footprint by over 100 times, eliminating wasted volume and weight. This also ensures easy deliveries through standard-sized UK letterboxes, and space optimisation in retail environments.
POTR Pots are made from 0.5mm thick recycled polypropylene sheet which reduces material usage by an incredible 95% compared to traditional pots (often made from 10mm thick material). This reduction can be observed when weighing a POTR Pot (approx 100g) vs a traditional pot (approx 2kg). Whatsmore, our sheet material is made from waste polypropylene plastic destined for landfill helping contribute to a circular economy.

Considering user needs, POTR integrated a self-watering system with a reservoir in the pot’s base, supported by a capillary action wicking cord. This innovation not only caters to busy lifestyles but also ensures plant longevity, reducing unnecessary wastage of houseplants and their associated carbon footprint.

Slug Stoppa, a first to market spray pouch that protects plants from slugs and snails, without hurting them. Slug Stoppa, voted best new product at Glee 2024, is a joy to use with the ergonomically designed ‘thumb pump’ trigger attached to a flexible pouch that has up to 55% less plastic than a conventional rigid spray bottle. The flexible pouch is more compact and lightweight than a rigid bottle and consumes less energy throughout its lifecycle, resulting in less waste to collect, sort and recycle!

Due to the success of Slug Stoppa spray pouches, there are three brand new additions to the ecofective range in this format. Bug Stoppa controls greenfly, blackfly, spider mite, scale insect and more. Disease Stoppa shields plants against common diseases including powdery mildew by creating an invisible barrier against disease spores. Rose Defender provides nutrients for vibrant healthy roses whilst also controlling bugs and mildew.
Additionally, for those who want to re-use their Slug Stoppa trigger, they can now purchase the new Slug Stoppa Replacement Pouch which attaches to the existing trigger, saving the consumer £1 when compared to buying a brand-new spray pouch.

Celebrating excellence: the 2024 GIMA Awards winners are confirmed

GIMA is proud to announce the winners of the prestigious 2024 GIMA Awards which was held at the stunning Celtic Manor Resort in Newport. The ceremony recognised the finest innovations, outstanding performances, and remarkable contributions that have been made within the garden retail sector by a host of dedicated and passionate suppliers and manufacturers.
Honouring the brands, products, and initiatives that have made a significant impact across multiple categories saw 17 winners crowned, all carefully selected by this year’s judging panel. The panel was, this year, made up of Blue Diamond’s Alan Roper, Sharon McNair from Yorkshire Garden Centres, Josh Novell of Polhill Garden Centres, Haskin’s Andy Harriss, Scott Provan from Klondyke, plus Garden Trade News’ Trevor Pfeiffer, Michael Perry aka Mr Plant Geek, and Jade Galloway-Harrison from award sponsors, eBay.
With the judge’s work done, it fell to well-known comedian, presenter and Sunday Times bestselling author, Tom Allen to unveil this year’s winner’s rollcall. Captivating the audience from the off, Tom brought his unique sense of wit and observational comedy to proceedings, helping to make it a night to remember.
GIMA Director, Vicky Nuttall said of the event: “We’ve had the most incredible night! The room was packed full, laughter was ringing out from all corners, and we have a list of winners that truly demonstrates how much our sector is dedicated to finding new solutions, showcasing innovation and helping our nation’s gardeners to fall in love with gardening season after season.

One of the most coveted accolades is the GIMA Sword of Excellence, and this year saw Sipcam Home & Garden scoop it for the second year in a row, thanks to the success of its Slug Stoppa. The judges said: “The choice was simple. True innovation, and a dual-purpose product.” Highly commended for the Sword of Excellence was given to Westland for its Kent & Stowe SureCut Cutting Range.

The GCA Supplier of the Year Award, was given to Westland Horticulture, with a shortlist made up of the AMES Companies, Woodmansterne, Meadow View Stone and Woodlodge. The GCA said of Westland: “There were plenty of strong contenders for the top spot this year, but with just one vote in it Westland just beat everyone else with their complete category and range propositions, backed with superb services levels.”

This year it was Doff Portland that walked away triumphant, having been awarded the Gardenex Export Achievement Award, just pipping VegTrug and David Austin Roses who were awarded finalist status.
Talking about their selection Gardenex said: “Doff Portland Ltd is our winner of the Export Achievement Award due to its strategic expansion in the EU and strong investment in proprietary authorisations. Coupled with exclusive partnerships and success in securing product registrations for biocides and slug control across multiple EU countries. Their impressive growth, achieving multi-million pound in EU turnover, and recognition for best in market in France contributing to their success along with a King’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade, makes Doff this year’s worthy winner.”

This year’s sustainability crown was given to the team at Primeur for its Tierra Verde coloured collection, which scooped the HTA sponsored Sustainability Award. The judges’ comments for selecting Primeur were: “Primeur continue to evolve a great eco range of products, this time creating further diversification within the multi-award-winning Tierra Verde range of planters.”
A ‘Sustainability Champion’ was also selected within each category (where relevant), celebrating the different ways sustainable solutions are being brought to market.

The captivating scenes encapsulate the essence of Peckish, revealing how the brand truly does bring everyone closer to nature in a sustainable way, and highlights the joy of wild bird feeding.

Recognising this growing market, Westland launched a comprehensive campaign to raise awareness of its houseplant product collection and educate consumers on maintaining a thriving indoor jungle.
What the judges said: “This campaign taps into what has been a growth market in recent years. It's perfectly aimed at keeping consumers engaged with some great content ultimately driving sales.”
