2023 gave us plenty of opportunity to talk about the one thing the British love the most – the weather. Or the lack of it in this case. With a later than normal season, we’ve been busy playing catch-up and catch-up we did as when the season did begin, we saw gardeners come out in their droves, desperate to add a touch of green to their windowsills, balconies, courtyards, and gardens. Even when faced with a cost-of-living crisis, gardening remains a popular hobby. Whether connecting with nature, attracting wildlife to even the smallest space, or wanting to minimise food miles, gardening could be perceived as bulletproof. No matter what the world throws at us, gardening remains a beautiful constant.
Within this GIMA Digest, you will see 50 reasons why garden retail continues to thrive whilst we have waved goodbye to many of the high street’s best loved brands. As destination centres or hubs of their communities, garden retailers have the opportunity – and space – to showcase more, including different ways to create aspirational living that shoppers can recreate at home. La Hacienda – From firepits and fire baskets to chimeneas, pizza ovens and an electric heating offer like no other, La Hacienda is the go-to brand for all things outdoor living. For season 24, watch it bring to market merchandising solutions never before seen within garden retailing. New parasol heater FSDU’s will drive sales of this great pick-up line, whilst aspirational ‘room set’ displays will highlight a new way to display products in-store. Finally, new lifestyle imagery and updated digital assets will be made available to help retailers educate and inspire consumers via social media and in-store.
Woodshaw – From table sets, garden seating, arbours, shelters and essentials, such as a wheelie bin shelter and log store, all Woodshaw products are backed by traditional techniques, expert knowhow, modern manufacturing facilities and a 20-year guarantee against rot. Additionally, with Kelkay’s complementary ranges available for cross category ordering, retailers can access everything they need to create lifestyle-driven sales instore.

Hozelock’s commitment to increasing the sustainability of its products, packaging and manufacturing processes will see the entire knitted hose range made from up to 70% recycled materials by 2024.
This will be achieved through the construction of the hose layers and swapping to recycled PVC materials.
The knitted hose range, which includes the popular Ultimate, Ultramax and Ultraflex hoses, has been part of Hozelock’s core product range for over 60 years.

Extensive testing has been conducted to ensure this does not compromise on quality or performance for the end user, and the change will remove more than 900 tonnes of virgin PVC material from the range, the equivalent of 45 million plastic bottles.
The enhanced range will be available for garden centre retailers to stock from January 2024.

2024 will see Primeur launch an exciting new recycled material innovation alongside new additions to its multi award-winning ranges.

M&G’s bottles range has been expanded this season to 10 designs, all double wall insulated stainless steel with secure-seal screw tops with silicone seals. The bottles are suitable for either hot or cold drinks, retaining heat for about 12 hours and keeping contents cold for 24 hours. Technological innovations allow the new generation of bottles to be fully printed across the bottle contour, displaying the designs to their full potential. Catherine Rowe’s stunning ‘Honey Bee’ pattern covers one of the new bottles, and Dee Hardwicke’s ‘Hares and Berries’ a second. One of the stand-out designs is a visually ravishing ‘Ulysses Butterflies and Lemons’ design from the Natural History Museum. There are two William Morris designs from the V&A, as well as Edward Lear’s perennially popular comic ‘Birds’ and an orientally inspired 18th-century design by William Kilburn. Hokusai’s ‘Cranes in Flight’ comes from the British Museum and an Amethyst close-up from the NHM covers the last bottle. The bottles have a suggested retail price of £22.99.
New for this year are 12 double wall insulated stainless steel Travel Tumblers, designed to hold 450ml liquid in a perfectly cylindrical tumbler with a push-top for access and a sliding seal designed for on-the-go drinking (SRP £19.99). Four of the mugs feature V&A designs - the wondrously flaming Japanese Kimono Cranes; two richly textured and deeply blue-green William Morris favourites; and a new Dutch Delft blue-and-white tile design depicting the glorious age of sail. Mary Delany’s intricate and delicate paper collage flower pieces feature on one of the British Museum mugs; the other is a witty recreation of Hokusai’s famous Great Wave print - possibly appropriate for a drinking cup! 2023 GIMA Awards crown new winners
With the great and good from the garden retail gathered at the Celtic Manor this evening (19th October), the winners of the highly-anticipated 2023 GIMA Awards were revealed. Here we find out more about those brands currently celebrating in style!

With the great and good from the garden retail gathered at the Celtic Manor this evening (19th October), the winners of the highly-anticipated 2023 GIMA Awards were revealed. Here we find out more about those brands currently celebrating in style!
This year, the GIMA Awards winners were carefully selected by a panel of industry experts, made up of Gary Carvosso, Coolings Garden Centre; Shelley Bou Chrouch, Scarlet Opus; Mairi Devlin, B&Q; Ian Hodgson, Garden News; Trevor Pfeiffer, Garden Trade News; Michelle de Lavis-Trafford, Choice Marketing; Nicola Pugh, Pugh’s Garden Centre; Nicola Seagar, Primrose; and Tristan Sissons, Hillier Garden Centres. As always, innovation, thoughtful design and carefully curated content came together to create a roster of entries that gave the judges plenty of food for thought. However, after much debate and discussion a final list of winners was created, which tonight has been announced by celebrity host, Gethin Jones.
GIMA Director, Vicky Nuttall said of the event: “What a night! Every year the awards keep getting better and better. We continue to see more guests joining us and also see the competition heating up as brands from across the industry hope to be the ones to take the trophy home. Tonight’s event has been truly superb. We’ve seen new names climb the winner’s podium and together have celebrated the best our industry has to offer. One of the most coveted accolades is the GIMA Sword of Excellence, and this year it wasSipcam Home & Garden who walked away with the honour for its Organic Superfood for Peat-Free Compost.
The judges said: “The single biggest issue that we face as an industry is the move to peat-free compost and this helps to address this challenge. It's also well-presented and has great commercial opportunities.”
Winners comments: “We launched it at Glee in 2022 and spent at least six or eight months before that with our Spanish and Italian colleagues. So it's been a group effort for us to try and get a solution to an issue we've got on the market.” Nigel Thompson, Head of Sales and Marketing.

The team from Smart Garden Products celebrated being awarded the GCA Supplier of the Year Award, having just missed out on the accolade last year.
The team pipped 2022 winners, Meadow View Stone, and Woodlodge to the win.
The GCA said of Smart Garden: “Our reasons for selecting Smart Garden Products as the 2023 GCA Supplier of the Year are simple. They are extremely reliable with great availability and prompt delivery and offer products that are well presented and sell well. Together this all makes them a joy to work alongside.”

The 2023 Gardenex Export Achievement Award was presented to Grow Sow Simple for its campaign alongside Winco Foods in the US, with VegTrug and Wildlife World enjoying finalist status.
Talking about the success of Grow Sow Simple, Gardenex said: “This was a very professional and successful operation and a very worthy winner of the Award for their outstanding achievement.”
Winner's comment: “I couldn’t be more thrilled. Seeds is a sector that suffered through Brexit. Thankfully we were able to work with Gardenex and open up the American market, which has been so important to us. We initially started with a couple of trade shows, and from there we met a big client and got our first order. This year we exported to seven, 40-foot containers. We got into a company called WinCo Foods on the West coast of America with four ranges into its 133 stores, and our 42 staff worked 24 hours a day in our warehouse in Newcastle to put the put the order out in short time. It's done really well. We can't wait for next year.” Dan Robson, Managing Director.

Sustainability was also celebrated with Treadstone Products walking away with this year’s HTA sponsored Sustainability Award for its Rope Trellis.
The judges remarked: “Sometimes the simplest of ideas are the best and this rope trellis provides consumers with a great sustainable solution for climbing plants.”
A ‘Sustainability Champion’ was also selected within each category (where relevant), celebrating the different ways sustainable solutions are being brought to market.
Winner's comments: “It’s been a very busy night for us. We have won six awards and we are very, very pleased. “The rope trellis has been an idea that's been buzzing around in the back of my head for many years and it’s something a bit different. It’s one of these things you tend to get a feel for when lots and lots of people, young and old, male or female universally seems to be attracted to it. What the judges said: “A great bit of retail theatre that brings the product to life whilst, at the same time, allows the product to be the star.”
Winner's comments: “This is a team effort. Our sales team came up with the concept. We brought it back to the workshop, showed it to one of the workshop designers. He created it and we made it. We now have over 150 [in stores] and sales are going up by three, four, 500% by using it. Sales are just astronomical and in a very small footprint of around two-foot square.” Mark Pittman, Managing Director.

GIMA has presented a cheque for £14,000 to Greenfingers charity following the association's successful golf day at Belton Woods, Lincolnshire, in the Summer.
The cheque was presented by GIMA president Jenny Douthwaite (left) to Greenfingers chairman Sue Allen and director of funding and communications Linda Petrons at the GIMA Awards.
