Johnsons Lawn Seed’s dog-resistant grass seed formula continues to drive innovation

Launched to the market to critical acclaim in 2019, Johnson Lawn Seed’s Tuffgrass with Dog Patch Resistance is continuing to ignite sales of the lawn seed category thanks to its unrivalled innovation and ability to deliver rapid and tangible results for lawn owners, with the company reporting a sales increase of over 50% since its launch.

Tuffgrass with Dog Patch Resistance is a unique new product that has been formulated to banish the problem of yellow patches and dead areas of grass caused by dogs urinating on lawns, a problem well-known to any dog and garden owner. By incorporating naturally tolerant grass species, scorched patches in lawns will be consigned to history, without consumers having to change their dog’s diet or behaviour. Even if slight discolouration occasionally occurs, grass will recover.

Before bringing this product to market, the world-leading grass seed specialist DLF Seeds, the parent company of Johnsons Lawn Seed, carried out 672 tests to simulate the effect of dog urine on individual types of grass. It tested 168 varieties of grass across seven species – trialing each variety with dog urine mixtures in four concentrations. Results showed that certain grasses offer better resistance to dog urine than others, while some did not suffer any detrimental effects.

Johnsons Lawn Seed’s Guy Jenkins said: “Since the introduction of dog patch resistant grass seed retailers have been reporting stock fly off the shelves as gardeners enjoy the opportunity to access a product that tackles this long-standing issue. With an estimated 9.9million dogs in the UK and 26% of UK adults owning a dog*, the opportunity to capture even more sales is very real, especially when coupled with the fact that the nationwide lockdown saw, according to a recent HTA report, over 3million new gardeners discover their ‘green fingers’.  Innovation which tackles a common problem, supported with tangible results, and clear and concise information at the point of purchase and on the packaging are all key drivers for sales growth, and our Tuffgrass with Dog Patch Resistance delivers on all fronts.”

In line with consumer trends for products that are kind to the environment, Johnsons’ dog patch-resistant mixture is natural and safe for family use. The product contains 100% grass seed and nothing else. Finally, like all Johnsons Lawn Seed products, lawns sown from Tuffgrass with Dog Patch Resistance perform excellently in low temperatures and snow, while the mix benefits from improved drought-resistance.
