Spring is the season of blossom and blooms, and when thoughts turn to cultivating a new look for that tired old garden shed.

After a spruce up with paint or preservative, top of the list for home improvers is a new roof.

The award-winning EASYLINE lightweight roofing sheet from Onduline Building Products is the DIY-solution that is ideal for sheds and other types of garden building.

Available on its own attractive point-of-sale display, it is easy to stock in store and presents an on-trend opportunity for nurseries and garden centre retailers to grow their product offering.

The eye-catching display is self-contained and can be readily showcased on the shop floor. It is also created out of eco-friendly material, cardboard and timber, in line with the trend for ‘greener’ practices.

Eco-friendly EASYLINE was judged the winner of the Garden Landscaping category in the 40th anniversary GIMA awards.

Described by the panel of industry experts as ‘a versatile product, ideal for small projects’, the corrugated roofing sheets (100cm by 76cm), are easy to handle and transport, and will fit into the boot of an average family-sized car.

Great for the DIY enthusiast, the sheets can be cut with a standard cutter or roofer knife.

Waterproof and safe

Nisha Kumar, Onduline’s head of marketing, said: “All over the UK gardens will be bursting into life and while the flowers will look lovely the garden will be let down by an ageing shed.

“It’s quick and simple to slap on a couple of coats of stain, and now with EASYLINE it’s just as easy to replace that roof, and it will be watertight and won’t need looking at again for years.”

As well as sheds, the EASYLINE roofing system is also great for providing weatherproof protection to garden studios and offices, pet shelters, wood shelters, annexes, orangeries and car ports.

Each EASYLINE sheet is made of 50% to 60% recycled fibres and contains no hazardous substances, making it completely safe for people and family pets.

Nisha added: “EASYLINE compares very favourably to traditional shed felt thanks to its 10-year waterproofing guarantee and ease of installation.”

Attractive bright colours

EASYLINE is available in several bright colours and, along with the roofing sheets, the attractive PoS display showcases all the accessories and fittings that are needed. The display also includes a QR code that guides DIY customers to simple-to-follow installation instructions.

Nisha concluded: “Since we introduced EASYLINE into the garden retailing sector, the interest from independent nurseries and others has grown and grown.

“They have recognised it as a prime new opportunity to attract value-conscious customers who are keen to upgrade their existing garden buildings, and to do it sustainably.”

A quieter roof makes for happier animals...that's sound advice from Onduline

It almost goes without saying, animal welfare is a major issue for farmers and hugely important is providing appropriate shelter. Yet the peaceful environment can be utterly shattered each time it rains if the right roofing solution isn’t in place. Lightweight roofing specialist Onduline has this covered, with its bituminous corrugated sheets being up to four times quieter than a metal alternative when the weather turns nasty.

Onduline roofing products have been a ‘go to’ solution for stable owners and those caring for animals for years.

Along with their durability, ease of fitting and eco-friendly qualities, their acoustic benefit is a key reason why they are such a favourite.

The noise generated by rain pounding on a metal roof can be extremely disturbing for any livestock within.

Compare this to the noise deadening impact of Onduline’s bituminous sheets and the difference is obvious.

In fact, comparative testing commissioned by the company has shown its corrugated sheeting is around 23 decibels quieter.

Potential customers can put this to the test on an acoustic rain simulator, which has been developed to give people the opportunity to hear the evidence for themselves.

“While the rain simulator cannot match the stringent controls required for laboratory testing, it does offer a realistic practical demonstration of the products’ sound dampening qualities,” explained Ardit Strica, Onduline’s Technical Manager.

Most garden sheds will reach a time in life when the shed roof needs a bit of a makeover. Repair or replace, that’s the question? Sometimes replacing is the only cost-effective solution, Here, Onduline have advised on an easy, DIY-friendly how to.

Repair or replace

A sagging or leaking shed roof is the most common reason why someone will look to either repair or replace it but the first step is to identify if the issue can be repaired, or whether replacing the whole shed roof is the only option.

What roofing material is best?

Felt, tiles...bitumen roofing sheets!

Onduline’s bitumen roofing sheets are a cost-effective and inexpensive way to keep garden shed watertight. They’re also:

  • Easy-to-install
  • Durable
  • Weatherproof
  • Long-lasting (a minimum 10-year guarantee!)
  • Eco-friendly
  • Lightweight
  • DIY-friendly

They are generally more expensive than traditional shed felt, but they will last a lot longer, and they come in a variety of different colours and styles including:

How to install new shed roofing

With most other materials it is likely that the existing material used on the shed roof will need removing. If replacing felt with felt, for example, the old felt will need to be stripped off the shed roof first.

An added benefit of Onduline roofing sheets...they can be installed on top of existing felt!

How to install ONDULINE EASYLINE roofing sheets?

You won’t believe how easy it is!

Once the roof has been prepared by fitting wooden battens to it (at an equal distance apart), all that is needed to do is follow these next 4 simple steps:

  • Lay the sheets over the gutter line with an overhang and lay them in the opposite direction to the wind
  • Lay the second row so the first sheet is parallel to the corrugations but not in line with the first
  • Fix the sheets at the eaves, overlaps and ridges with the correct fixings
  • Fix a verge to the edge for ultimate aesthetic, waterproofing and wind resistance, fixing to the sidewall first and then the roofing sheets with an overlap
