How will the sale of Homebase impact on the garden industry?

News that Homebase has been sold to Australian group Wesfarmers for £340m this week raises speculation of what's now going to happen to the DIY retailer, and in particular the garden retailing side of the business.

The new owners are not wasting any time in makng their first moves. Just days after the acquisition was completed, the company launched a cull of the chain’s leadership team.

The UK garden industry will be watching further developments closely as Wesfarmers goes about transforming this business.

Already, Wesfarmers intends to rebrand Homebase as Bunnings over the next three to five years.

As part of the management cull Managing director Echo Lu, who joined the business last April, has already left the business, while finance director Don Davis, commercial director Paul Emslie, retail operations director Ewan McMahon and marketing director Chris McDonough - who only joined Homebase in December - are all reported to be on their way out.

It is thought those senior roles are to be filled by Wesfarmers personnel, with chief operating officer Peter Davis taking on Lu's position. Rodney Boys, Bunnings’ logistics and improvement general manager, will become the new finance director.

Wesfarmers managing director Richard Goyder welcomed the acquisition of the £1.5bn turnover DIY retailer, and added: “We are excited about the opportunity to bring the best of Bunnings to the UK and Ireland.”

Bunnings is Australia’s largest hardware chain, with a total of 338 stores including a presence in New Zealand.

As February trading finishes up by 10% in volume sales terms year on year, thoughts are turning to what promises to be a bumper March.

With Mother’s Day, Garden Re-Leaf Day and Easter all falling during the month, we just need a spell of good weather to add to the mix and garden centre tills will be busier than ever.

You’ll all have your Mother’s Day and Easter promotions sorted, but what about your Garden Re-Leaf Day plans?

Garden Re-Leaf Day takes place on March 18th, and it really is a great opportunity for that extra sales spike during the month.

It signals the start of the gardening season and by having some fun you can easily generate some extra local PR.

Plus you can help raise money for Greenfingers at the same time!

Every garden centre that’s run activities for Garden Re-Leaf Day in the past has seen an increase in sales that weekend. Why wouldn’t you want to join in?

It’s not too late to get involved in Garden Re-Leaf Day – 18th March

Garden centres, manufacturers and suppliers  are getting right behind Greenfingers Garden Re-Leaf Day this year, planning  Quiz nights, raffles, cake sales and more to kick start the gardening season and raise money for Greenfingers Charity.

24 hour Plant-athons are taking place in Altons Garden Centre, Blue Diamond’s Fryer’s Garden Centre, Klondyke & Strikes Byrkley Garden Centre, The Garden Stores  Studley Garden Centre and Squire’s Garden Centres in Badshot Lea and Twickenham are all taking part.  Garden Centre teams, sSchool children, Mayors, BBC Radio presenters and special guest planters will all be getting their hands dirty planting for Greenfingers.   The planted pots, will then be sold in aid of Greenfingers.

An intrepid team of 48 walkers will be walking from the HTA headquarters in Theale, on Garden Re-Leaf Day.  If you fancy the challenge of a 20 mile walk it’s not too late to sign up!  Register today by emailing sarah@greenfingerscharity.org.uk

GTN’s Trevor Pfeiffer is shrinking before our eyes as he loses weight to raise £££s for Greenfingers Garden Re-Leaf Day.  Help him get to his target by sponsoring him today ttps://www.justgiving.com/Trevor-Pfeiffer/

Gardman and Briers Ltd are both supporting Garden Re-Leaf Day through the sale of specially designed products which support Garden Re-Leaf Day.  The Briers Kids set is sure to be a hit with children this summer. Gardman’s coco liners, solar lights and specially designed door mats will provide a great boost to the funds raised as part of Garden Re-Leaf Day.

Richard Jackson, Greenfingers Founder and QVC gardener, along with other gardening suppliers are supporting Garden Re-Leaf Day again this year, on special QVC shows on Saturday 19th March and Sunday 20th March.

Tottenham stars, Clive Allen and Pat Jennings were among the guests at the Classiflora Open Days last week, pictured above with Andrea Zelari, MD of Zelari and Riccardo Castiglioni MD of Classiflora.

Garden Centre buyers, landscapers and amenity representatives were attracted by the great Shelfie offers and Hot Spot promotion prices available for the two open days on Wednesday and Thursday, 2nd and 3rd March 2016.

Classiflora's Andrew Dayes reported higher than usual order levels and several garden centre buyers commented on a feeling on confidence about plant sales for this season.

Clive Allen and Pat Jennings, whilst buying for their own gardens were also confident about Tottenham's chances of winning the Premier League this season.  That was before the matches at West Ham and against Arsenal yesterday.  Let's hope the garden centre buyers confidence turns into a premier season for plant sales.

HTA welcomes productivity boost as government supports Sunday trading amendment

The Horticultural Trades Association welcomes MPs’ decision to accept the Government’s Sunday trading amendment to the Enterprise Bill, which could see local authorities given the power to relax Sunday trading restrictions in their areas, if they wish to do so. “This amendment offers our members a great opportunity to boost productivity and will provide great support to our sector to mitigate against the additional costs of National Living Wage and pensions auto-enrolment which will start to bite next month.” says  HTA Chief Executive Carol Paris...

The Horticultural Trades Association welcomes MPs’ decision to accept the Government’s Sunday trading amendment to the Enterprise Bill, which could see local authorities given the power to relax Sunday trading restrictions in their areas, if they wish to do so.

The Enterprise Bill is set to be discussed in the House of Commons next week.  In the debate, we hope MPs recognise the need for reform and the economic and social benefits of liberalisation at the local level, particularly for garden centres.

Ultimately, we hope to see the policy become law and that local authorities take steps to implement it.

The HTA believes that devolving the decision on Sunday trading to the local level is a logical step to bring it in line with the wider planning system, where local people have more say in how their communities are run. It will also promote consumer choice and level the playing field for bricks and mortar retailers, making it easier for them to compete with 24/7 online retail.

The ability to trade for longer on Sundays could also provide a welcome shot in the arm for garden centres, 95% of which are SMEs – allowing them to increase sales and significantly boost productivity making better use of existing assets and resources.

This would in turn help to offset emerging cost pressures such as the implementation of the national living wage and pension auto-enrolment. A report from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) released on Monday (29/04) suggests that if left unchecked, such cost pressures and changing consumer habits, could have a detrimental impact on the retail sector – with employment falling by as much as a third by 2025.

The HTA also welcomes Government efforts to strengthen the rights of workers in relation to Sunday working. The Bill will further protect those who do not wish to work, whilst providing opportunities for the many workers – particularly students and those looking for flexible part-time work – who value the ability to work on Sunday and would welcome additional hours.

Indeed, in most garden centres, staff already work full eight hour shifts on Sundays regardless of trading hours, as plants need watering and pets for sale must be cared for. However, they cannot serve customers and are essentially unproductive during these shoulder hours; often spending much of this time turning customers away from the tills.

HTA Chief Executive Carol Paris says: “This amendment offers our members a great opportunity to boost productivity and will provide great support to our sector to mitigate against the additional costs of National Living Wage and pensions auto-enrolment which will start to bite next month.”

Rising Stars finalist finds way to boost coffee and tea sales
The Westland GCA Rising Stars Masterclasses were an inspiration for Kath Bailey, one of the 2015 finalists from Barton Grange, and helped her to boost sales of coffee and tea products...
The Westland GCA Rising Stars Masterclasses were an inspiration for Kath Bailey, one of the 2015 finalists from Barton Grange.

Kath took the merchandising principles and advice back to her Cookshop and decided to separate all her tea and coffee products to create clearer displays for their customers and see if that had a positive result. The answer was a big YES. Coffee products were up by 45% and tea products by 50%.

What similar product areas could you separate to make it clearer for customers and increase sales as a result?

Record number of entries for this year's Rising Stars

This year’s Rising Stars Programme, run by Westland Horticulture and the Garden Centre Association, has started with a record number of entries from garden centre staff looking to get ahead in the world of horticultural retailing...

This year’s Rising Stars Programme has started with a record number of entries from garden centre staff looking to get ahead in the world of horticultural retailing.

The programme, run by Westland Horticulture and the Garden Centre Association is now in its eighth year and has been hugely successful to date, welcomed by the industry and participants alike.

This year a total of 33 people signed up for the programme and ultimately one will achieve the title of Rising Star of 2016.

The Southern Masterclass kicked off at Squires Garden Centre in Shepperton on Tuesday (March 1), where Ian Boardman, IBBIS (UK) Director and Rising Stars facilitator put the entrants through their paces.

Ian gave hints and tips on how to increase sales and profits from every square metre in their garden centres and more importantly, how to ensure that customers have a great experience each time they visit. The Northern Masterclass will take place at Barton Grange Garden Centre on March 17.

Keith Nicholson, Marketing Director for Westland Horticulture said: “This year we made the decision to have a North and South first masterclass to make travelling easier for candidates. The industry is thriving and more and more are pursuing and gaining success in horticultural careers. This has, and will continue to be, helped by initiatives such as the Rising Stars.”

Iain Wylie, Chief Executive of the GCA said: “The top 5 candidates will deliver their presentations at the next GCA Conference which will be held in January in St Andrews, Scotland. Each finalist will be voted on by their peers and the ultimate winner will be announced at the Gala Dinner. Best of luck to all those taking part!”

Four growing awards for Thomspon & Morgan

Thompson & Morgan is moving into its peak supply season with a spring its step having swept the board at the Great British Growing Awards for a second consecutive year.

The UK’s largest horticultural mail order supplier took four top gongs, all nominated and voted for by the gardening public. There’s no industry back slapping here, the accolades have all come about through high customer satisfaction levels and a quality range of grow your own essentials, offered via the best website in the business.

The nation’s army of grow-your-own gardeners voted the Suffolk business Best Online Retailer over big players in the market including the world’s largest internet retailer Amazon.

Its range of fruit and vegetable seeds was voted best in the business, as was its plug plant offering. Known and respected for bringing more new varieties to the UK than any other plant retailer, its exclusive dual-cropping Tomtato® plant scooped the Most Innovative Gardening Product Award, having taken the Best New Veg Growing Product award in 2015.

Thompson & Morgan Horticultural Director, Paul Hansord said: “Our products and services win us multiple industry awards each season, and it’s always good to be recognised by our peers, but nothing beats a nod from our customers. To be rated so highly by the great British gardening public is a true testament to all the hard work and effort the T&M teams puts in to ensure we have the best range of products that give gardeners the results they are looking for.”

Thompson & Morgan will be at the Edible Garden Show (Stoneleigh Park, 11-13 March) to collect awards for:

  • Best Fruit and Veg Seed Range
  • Best Plug Plant Range
  • Best Online Retailer
  • Most Innovative Growing Product - Tomtato®
Webbs customers ready for more puppy love

Customers at Webbs Garden Centres show so much love for Guide Dogs that they’ve raised enough money to name and help raise a new puppy for the charity...

Customers at Webbs Garden Centres show so much love for Guide Dogs that they’ve raised enough money to name and help raise a new puppy for the charity.

During the last year generous customers have donated over £5,000 giving them the opportunity to name a puppy and sponsor it for the first year of its life. This will be the third Webbs puppy, following on from Webster and Wooster which have gone on to change the lives of blind and partially sighted people.

Webbs has launched a competition to name the new puppy with suggestions being invited up until Saturday, 30th April. The winner and their family will be given a free guided tour of the Guide Dogs national breeding centre in Leamington Spa plus £50 worth of Webbs vouchers.

Webbs Chairman Ed Webb said, “It’s fantastic that, once again, the generosity of our customers will significantly improve the quality of life of a blind or partially sighted person and we can now become part of their life-changing story.”

He added, “The Guide Dogs charity is a cause very close to the hearts of our customers who have entered previous name a puppy competitions in their hundreds and who enjoy following the dogs’ progress. We are all looking forward to welcoming the new puppy as soon as it’s old enough to be out and about.”

Alison Waterer said, “On behalf of Guide Dogs, I would personally like to thank all the staff and customers of Webbs, for once again raising funds to name their 3rd Guide Dog Puppy and therefore change a life – what a truly fantastic achievement.”

She added, “Naming a puppy is a fantastic way for people and organisations to make a difference to the lives of people who are blind or partially sighted. A total of 863 new guide dog partnerships were created last year and we have helped more people than ever before. It’s only through support such as this from Webbs that we’re able to maintain our lifelong commitment to blind and partially sighted people in the community as the guide dog service relies purely on voluntary income.”

The puppy will be cared for by a volunteer Puppy Walker who will bring the puppy for visits to the Wychbold store.

Entry forms can be collected in store at Webbs, Wychbold and Webbs, West Hagley.  Entries can also be made via the Webbs Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/webbsgardencentres/
High season deadline for Highfield’s latest project

The most recent building project at Highfield Garden World in Gloucestershire is on track to be completed in time for the Easter sales uplift, having been undertaken at a time to coincide with the quieter trading months of January and February.

The latest investment will increase the site’s total covered retail area from 5,200m² to almost 6,000m² and focusses on rebuilding one of the oldest sections to bring it in line with its modern neighbouring areas.

The new area will be home to gardening products as well as large seasonal and pop-up displays including an enlarged outdoor leisure department in spring and summer and an extended Christmas department in autumn and winter.

MD Tim Greenway commented: “We’ve always got a project either in mind or on the go. Our biggest incentive for overhauling this part of the site was to help us make the customer journey ever better.

"We’re constantly looking at how the flow works, and at how the customer responds to different sectors in different spaces in a different order and so on.

"This project is part of some bigger changes to the way our various areas interact, the footpaths customers take from sector to sector, and to improving sightlines in general.”
Adam Frost to design UK garden at Antalya Expo 2016

The Antalya Expo 2016 which runs from April to October will feature a UK garden which will be designed by Adam Frost on behalf of UK horticulture industry...

The Antalya Expo 2016 which runs from April to October will feature a UK garden which will be designed by Adam Frost on behalf of UK horticulture industry.

The theme of the garden is ‘One big family of gardeners’, representing both the unique world-renowned style of the British garden and the fabulous variety of plants which we enjoy growing from the family of nations around the world.

HTA Head of Horticulture Raoul Curtis-Machin is Commissioner-General of the UK garden and the official participant is the UK Government Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). The official participation contract was signed in front on Turkish media on Saturday 27 February.

The aim of the garden is to promote UK garden tourism, UK horticulture training, design skills and horticultural expertise. UK garden tourism currently brings in approximately £11 billion in revenue and has great potential for growth. 2016 is Visit Britain’s Year of the Garden.

The industry is also hoping to persuade a UK city to host an international horticultural Expo (the last one was Stoke Garden Festival in 1986). This is one of the twelve asks of industry and government in the Ornamentals Roundtable.

With a theme of ‘Cultivating a Green Life for Future Generations’ the Antalya Expo will run from 23 April to 30 October.  One of the world’s top ten favourite cities to visit Antalya is known as ‘the pearl of the Mediterranean’ and is rich with natural beauty and historical interest.

Garden Designer Adam Frost said: “The British horticulture industry has so much to shout about, so it is a privilege to take a little part of that to Turkey.”

HTA Head of Horticulture Raoul Curtis-Machin said: “We are excited about promoting UK horticulture on this international platform. There are forecast to be at least eight million local and international visitors to the Expo which is a great opportunity for us to showcase our world class horticulture.

"It’s more than 20 years since the UK last hosted a horticultural Expo. Turkey is a great country, and Antalya is a paradise location for an Expo. We hope that this garden will inspire British cities, and that their leaders see the potential of what it could bring to them.”

Tildernet MD Andrew Downey said: “We have had strong retailer support for the changes we have implemented."

Since Tildenet acquired Bosmere in December 2015, they have not wasted any time in applying their enviable customer service standards to the new acquisition. Order fulfilment levels are key to the Tildenet organisation and by the end of February, Bosmere had risen from 70% in Spring 2015 to 92.5% this year.

Andrew Downey, Managing Director, Tildenet (above) said “We have had strong retailer support for the changes we have implemented.

"Our new 80,000ft2 warehouse in Bristol will be on stream very shortly and this will allow us to bring Bosmere in line with Tildenet and provide our customers with 98% stock availability.

"We have also taken the opportunity to increase our sales team to 14 covering the UK, Republic of Ireland and Export Markets. Our Gardenware Division now comprises the Bosmere, Haxnicks, Tildenet and Mainframe brands and provides a ‘one stop shop’ for a huge range of key garden sundries – one order, one delivery and one invoice.”

All four brands are experiencing a positive start to the gardening season from an increased customer base and retailer support as a result of their recent acquisition.

QVC presenter is the new face of Wildlife World

Wildlife World has enlisted the talents of television presenter and gardening expert, David Ponton, to participate in the promotion of some of the company’s new products for wildlife.

Wildlife World has enlisted the talents of television presenter and gardening expert, David Ponton, to participate in the promotion of some of the company’s new products for wildlife.

The QVC guest-presenter has a great passion for all things gardening and wildlife and has worked with Wildlife World to present a series of short promotional videos for the company’s media channels.

The Gloucestershire-based company is a growing leading designer and manufacturer of sustainable, elegant wildlife products and has developed an array of habitats, feeders and accessories for all garden and wildlife species, including garden birds, solitary bees, beneficial insects and garden mammals and amphibians.

Wildlife World worked with video production company PinPoint Media, based locally in Cheltenham, to create a number of videos presented by David Ponton, including a demonstration of Wildlife World’s award winning Urban Bird Feeder and Swing Seat Feeder, as well as a company profile.

The videos are used by Wildlife World for its social media platforms and can be viewed anytime on the company’s YouTube channel, WildlifeWorldUK, along with over 60 other wildlife and product videos. The company also uses the videos for exhibitions and show stands as a constant education of the products for visitors to the stand. This proved an extremely popular and exciting focal point at GLEE 2015 and is sure to be equally well received at Spring Fair this year.

Wildlife World uses the video and David Ponton’s presenting skills to highlight the many attributes and benefits of the Urban Bird Feeder, launched only last year. Throughout the video Ponton emphasises the contemporary design of the feeder and connection to modern living, describing it as a great benefit to birds as it offers them a place to feed, whilst offering a delightful view for gardeners.

The presenter also praises Wildlife World’s Swing Seat Feeder in a separate video, associating it with the enjoyment of sitting on a park bench whilst admiring the surrounding nature. The Swing Seat Feeder is designed to reflect porch swing benches as it hangs from trees or other tall garden objects to allow small garden birds to perch and feed.

Wildlife World created the videos in partnership with David Ponton to not only demonstrate each product in situ, but to highlight how both products are specially designed to benefit garden birds. Wildlife World prides itself in offering a wide range of products that are extensively tried and testing before releasing them to the market, to ensure they are fully beneficial and pose no threat or harm to any wildlife species.

The company has produced many in-house videos displaying the majority of its products being used by its intended wildlife species to demonstrate how effective and attractive they are to wildlife, and how pleasing they are to gardeners and homeowners.

To receive a copy of the full-length video, or for further information please contact Wildlife World on 01666 505333, by emailing james@wildlifeworld.co.uk or by visiting the company’s website at www.wildlifeworld.co.uk

Steven Palmer, Finance Director of Squire’s Garden Centres, has been appointed Honorary Treasurer of horticulture industry charity Perennial.

He joins the Perennial Board of Trustees on a voluntary basis to provide oversight on the financial performance of the charity and bringing his experience in garden retail to advise on Perennial’s commercial arm GRBS Enterprises.

Steven comments: “Horticulture is often a poorly paid sector - it doesn’t take much for people to get into difficulty through no fault of their own and the consequences for them can be severe. For me there is a personal resonance with the aims of Perennial and its recipients and so I am pleased to be able to get involved and offer my time to help.”

Steven has been with Squire’s since 2009 and oversees the finances of the group’s 15 garden centres and 14 café/bars. Prior to that he had extensive experience in the leisure sector, holding FD roles at Novus Leisure and Cannons Health & Fitness Group.

Napoleon Grills is launching four high quality recipe and how-to grilling videos by author, food stylist and presenter, Genevieve Taylor.

The videos are available to its retailers and come in two versions; full at between 2-3 minutes and bite-size, approximately 15 seconds, ideal for Instagram.

Genevieve has written six cookery books including her most recent; How to Eat Outside, where she explores the joy of cooking in the open air, any time, anywhere.

Martin Sobey, UK Sales Manager comments; “Genevieve’s obvious enthusiasm for great food and an outdoor lifestyle were a perfect fit for us. Besides encouraging people to get grilling we also want these videos to bust the myth that only men barbecue. Gen shows how easy it is for everyone, she uses her grill as though it’s her range or oven and we want everyone to think like that.”

The company is already working on its next eight videos, all will be promoted in other Napoleon Grills’ markets in Europe and North America.

“This is a collection of recipes designed to grow over time,” says Martin, “the fantastic quality of the filming and editing by ex-BBC cameraman Rob Wicks, gives us a range of high quality, beautiful and tantalising recipe videos which we hope will encourage people to enjoy their barbecues more and get delicious, consistent results.”

12 days to go, still 5 pounds still to loose and many more £'s to raise
Pounds 4 Greenfingers update from Trevor Pfeiffer

GTN's Trevor Pfeiffer needs more help to acheive his weight loss target by Garden Re-Leaf Day on March 18th and raise money for Greenfingers...

"Greenfingers Garden Re-Leaf Day takes place on Friday 18th March 2016 - and I set myself a target to loose 1 stone between the GCA Conference and Garden Re-Leaf Day and raise money for Greenfingers by making it a sponosred slim.

"Immediately after conference I went down with a bout of man flu, so I was only able to get the diet up and running on Wednesday 3rd February.  My start weight was registered as 15 stone 4 pounds

and Saturday 3rd February was the second day of my 5:2 Fast diet plan.

"On that plan I can eat normally on non-fast days but only a maximum of 600 calories on fast days.  The start was particularly tough, feeling very hungry during the evening, but worthwhile as after two fast days I'd already lost 3 pounds in weight.

"Whilst I've stuck completely to the 5:2 diet plan this week I've only managed to loose 1 pound, so I may need some extra incentive to loose the next 5 pounds in only 12 days.  I think it may be more of a 4:3 plan to get to my target by Friday March 18th.

"Your donation to Greenfingers via https://www.justgiving.com/Trevor-Pfeiffer will give me all the extra motivation I need to make sure I get there.

"I'll keep you all updated with my progress in future issues of GTN Xtra.  Thank you to all the people who have already sponsored me.  I'm looking forward to raising more money for Greenfingers when I reach the target from all the kind people who've also said they would support me."

Next year I wonder how many pounds of lost weight can the UK gardening industry convert into £'s cash for Greenfingers by Garden Re-Leaf Day?

Garden Re-Leaf 2016 has already attracted eight top industry figures who will be staging 24 hour Plant-athons in garden centres beginning  their Plant-athons on Thursday 17th and finishing on Friday the 18th.  Poplars, Adrian Hall and Sunshine Garden Centres have all recently confirmed they will put on Garden Re-Leaf events in store.

Garden product retailers and manufacturer colleagues will be saddened to learn of the sudden death on Tuesday 1st March 2016 of Phil Kimberley.

One of the characters of our industry, Phil had worked for Erin and ICI Garden Products, before joining Solus Garden & Leisure where he built strong
and lasting relationships with many accounts over the years.

Covering the Midlands, Wales and the West Country, he was totally committed to the companies he worked for, yet equally committed to helping his customers build their businesses too.

Knowing his products inside out and understanding the garden trade, Phil was renowned for building sales for his retail customers through promotions and deals that capitalised on potential business when trade was right.

Also a committed family man, Phil leaves wife Diana, daughter Sharlene and son Craig along with four grandchildren. Many of Phils' customers knew of his
enjoyment of food, especially cake, and at weekends he could often be found supporting his favourite football team Birmingham City.

Phil and his wife had recently discovered the joys of cruises following his retirement after a short spell working for Stax Birmingham, helping build their garden products wholesale operation.

A Warnham man has pleaded guilty to theft of Christmas decorations worth nearly £500 from Newbridge Nurseries Garden Centre in December.

Justin Dickinson of Tillets Lane appeared at Horsham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, where he was due to be tried.

However, the 40-year-old changed his plea to guilty, and will be sentenced at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on March 24.

The court heard that he was arrested on Saturday December 12 after fleeing the garden centre in Broadbridge Heath on foot.

Dickinson placed Christmas lights to the value of £457.96 in his trolley, but left without paying.

He was challenged by garden centre staff Steve Nicholls and Dan Grain (pictured).

The pair spotted him hiding in bushes, and after a struggle between the three that left manager Mr Nicholls with a badly sprained wrist, Dickinson was restrained.

Mayor chooses English Oak from Wyevale Nurseries
The Mayor of Worcester visited one of the UK’s leading nurseries to choose an English Oak tree...
The Mayor of Worcester visited one of the UK’s leading nurseries to choose an English Oak tree.

Councillor Roger Knight attended Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford to purchase a replacement tree after the death of a much loved 300-year-old Oak on Torridon Walk Village Green in St Peters, Worcester.

Adam Dunnett, Sales and Marketing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “Andrew Congera, our Amenity Sales Manager, also a former resident of St Peters, who is an expert when it comes to Oak trees, assisted Roger and Warwick Neale, Head of Parks and Open Spaces at Worcester City Council, with choosing the right tree for the location.

“It was decided that a semi-mature English Oak, Quercus robur, would be perfect and it will be planted by the Mayor of Worcester in Torridon Walk Village Green on Thursday, March 17.

“Quercus robur is probably the most recognised of all our native trees. They are ideally suited to our clay soil making for superb growth. The bark of the tree is deeply grooved and a distinctive dark grey, which gives all year round interest. The branches are also strong and prominent giving the tree its majestic silhouette.”

Quercus robur produce acorns in the autumn, which are a reliable food source for wildlife while the tree itself offers a safe haven.

Cllr Knight explained: “It was a delight to select a replacement following the devastating loss of a much-loved oak, which was one of the best trees in Worcester.

“The new specimen is an excellent choice, which I’m sure will be enjoyed by many generations to come.”

Wyevale Nurseries is one of the largest family-run wholesale nurseries in the UK. It was established in 1930 by Harry Williamson, a horticulturist and entrepreneur. It became the company it is today under the leadership of his son, Peter, who sadly passed away in 2011.

The Williamsons’ saw the opportunity to sell their product to an undeveloped retail market, creating one of the first garden centres, followed by a chain. In 1987, the retail side needed to expand and the 19 garden centres were sold as a PLC.

The family then turned its focus to Wyevale Nurseries Ltd. It continues to be a family-run business with ownership and joint chairmanship currently being held by the third generation, Heather and Simeon Williamson, with plans for the fourth generation to takeover in the future.

Wyevale Nurseries has a significant product range and is regularly introducing new plants. It offers a large variety of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants to garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners.

Coffee could help smaller garden centres up their sales

Smaller garden centres without cafés are being offered the chance to trial automatic Bean to Cup coffee machines this spring (2016) in a bid to showcase how they can increase their sales...

Smaller garden centres without cafés are being offered the chance to trial automatic Bean to Cup coffee machines this spring (2016) in a bid to showcase how they can increase their sales.

Outlets wishing to improve spend per head but don’t have the space or facilities for a restaurant are getting the opportunity to install a machine for their customers to use.

Owner of tea and coffee equipment and product supplier, Café Works, Jacques Farmer, said: “We’re happy for garden centres to have one of our fully automatic Bean to Cup machine as part of a trial for a limited period, on a rental basis, to show them how they can increase their sales overall.

“In other similar outlets where we have installed them, retailers without cafés already have fed back to us that the addition of coffee to their offering is attracting new customers and that when they are on-site they are buying additional items. They also say that existing customers are now visiting more often as well.”

Café Works, which is based in Shropshire, provides single serve coffee options, tea and coffee equipment and vending solutions.

Jacques added: “The trials we’ve run already in similar businesses have been great successes. Feedback has included that customers are delighted they can now purchase a tastier, less expensive coffee than at their local Starbucks.

“For garden centres that don’t have a café this is the next best thing for testing the catering market as visitors can select their own great tasting coffee without staff being involved and it’s not just any random vended coffee either, the machine uses top quality beans.

“Our trails have found that the introduction of the machine has definitely helped increase customer spend per head.”

Jacques worked for Sodexo, one of the world’s leading providers of contract catering and Facilities Management, for 18 years and has 30 years’ experience in supplying vending and hot beverage equipment and products to clients in all sectors.

At Sodexo his responsibilities ranged from technical services, operations, client account management and business development to managing key clients such as Honda UK Manufacturing and Unilever.

At the start of this year (2016), he launched, Café Works, which is an authorised distributor of Keurig equipment and products.

Jacques, who is licensed to work in tea and coffee services by the Academy of Food and Wine Service, added: “Having a machine like this on site at a garden centre is a simple and effective way of increasing your spend per head with minimal effort and of adding to your customer base at the same time.

“As well as the machine, we also provide the best ethically sourced coffee beans from smaller suppliers, greatly improving prices and quality.

“I like to think that Café Works Ltd is ‘more than just tea and coffee’. We do everything from offering sound advice to selling great equipment and products, and have innovative ideas to help our clients solve the various problems they might have, along with providing other bits and pieces for home, restaurants and coffee shops.

“We are also working with an established designer to tailor our equipment and products to suit, for example, farm shops needing coffee to go and restaurants needing something more sophisticated. We also help small businesses needing equipment to help save staff time in-house when making that all important, inspirational and thirst-quenching cuppa for the team!”

The trials are subject to equipment availability at the time of request.

For further details  call Café Works, which is based in Priorslee, Telford, on 01952 291026 or visit www.cafe-works.co.uk.

Casual Dining reports 22% increase in attendees

170 exhibitors, 20 Keynote speakers and 4,402 attendees – that’s the top line figures from this year’s Casual Dining show, which won rave reviews from across the casual dining sector last week...

170 exhibitors, 20 Keynote speakers and 4,402 attendees – that’s the top line figures from this year’s Casual Dining show, which won rave reviews from across the casual dining sector last week.

Called an “essential forum for sharing new ideas, innovations and insights” by Carluccio’s co-founder and chairman Simon Kossoff, the multi-award winning two day show took place at the Business Design Centre in London on 24-25 February.

Its third edition enjoyed a 22% increase in unique attendees for 2016, with top buyers and decision makers from many of UK’s biggest restaurant, pub and bar groups packing the aisles.  Notably, nearly one in three visitors cited a corporate spend of over £500k.  Among the attendees were Azzurri Group, Casual Dining Group, Ed's Easy Diner, Giraffe, GBK, Hilton, JD Wetherspoon, La Tasca, Le Pain Quotidien, Living Ventures, Mitchells & Butlers, Marston’s, MEATliquor, Metropolitan Pub Company, Nando's, Oakman Inns, Pho, Pizza Hut, Prezzo, Revolution Bars, TGI Friday’s, The Breakfast Club, The Restaurant Group, Wagamama, Wahaca, Whitbread, Yo! Sushi, and Young’s.

Nearly 1,500 independent outlets (operators with between 1-5 sites) were also represented this year (up from 1,200 in 2015).

“A fantastic trade show with tons of interesting seminars, innovations and networking opportunities, which gave me insight and ideas for the future,” says Martin Morales, founder of Ceviche and Andina Restaurants.

“I thoroughly enjoyed Casual Dining.  It’s the perfect place to meet our existing partners, and to keep up-to-speed with their latest developments.  It also opens our eyes to new suppliers in the market – some I haven’t even heard of before.  I would definitely recommend it,” says Sophie Jennings, food & menu developer at JD Wetherspoon.

“This is a great place to come if you’ve got anything to do with the restaurant business.  There are so many great ideas here.  So good, maybe it’s a show that should be twice a year!” says celebrity chef and restaurateur Aldo Zilli, who was attending with Sacla’ Professionale.

“A visit to Casual Dining gives a unique opportunity to discover products and trends completely relevant to our sector.  It’s a great show!” says Alexander Salussolia, managing director of Glendola Leisure Group.

200 exhibitors forecast for 2017
The significant surge in visitor numbers has led many exhibiting companies to hail the 2016 show – as not just its biggest but also its most successful to date.  As a result, a record 72% of exhibitors rebooked for the next edition before the show had even closed.  To accommodate this strong uptake, and meet growing demand from a raft of new suppliers looking to reach this important market, there will be a 20% increase in stands for 2017.  This will expand the show into a new area on its Upper Feature Level and take the exhibitor total over 200.

“Once again, the high demand for stand space at the show reflects the ever growing popularity of the casual dining sector,” says group event director Chris Brazier.  “Even with the addition of a new area, it’s already on track to be sold out within months.  It’s a testament to the show’s continuing success – and demonstrates just how important and essential Casual Dining has become to suppliers and buyers looking to do business here.”

“We’ve had a great show.  It’s been very positive and we’ve met a real variety and high level of visitors.  We don’t do a lot of shows, so Casual Dining for us has been a really important opportunity to reach the fast growing casual dining market.  It’s been a pleasure to be a part of it,” says Matt Robinson, national and key accounts (licensed), Coca-Cola Enterprises.

“Once again Casual Dining has been thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile.  We have been here every year and the show continues to gather pace with serious visitors and a great range of products.  See you next year!” says Robert Marciano, director at DiSotto Foods.

“It’s been an astonishing show – the people I’ve seen have been incredible.  I’ve been approached by multiples and a couple of wholesalers, one of whom is actually going to start selling my products on Monday (29 February).  So, I think we’re going to be very busy and this is going to be a very profitable show.  I’ve already booked my stand for next year,” says David Richards, co-founder of Capreolus Fine Foods.

Big name Keynotes
Alongside the show’s bustling exhibition, the Casual Dining Keynote Theatre was a hive of activity throughout.  Powerful Keynotes and exclusive interviews – featuring a stellar line-up of industry big hitters, including Steve Richards (Casual Dining Group), Simon Kossoff (Carluccio’s), David Campbell (Wagamama), Luke Johnson (Risk Capital Partners), Martin Morales (Ceviche), Peter Martin (CGA Peach), and Paul Charity (Propel Info) – enjoyed standing room only crowds.

“It’s fantastic that we finally have a big, vibrant show for our sector – I think it’s a real coming of age,” said Kate Nicholls, CEO of The Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR), during her Keynote session.

Casual Dining Innovation Challenge Awards 2016
Brewfitt’s Future of Dispense, The Oval Eco Street Bowl from Tri-Star Packaging, and Coconut LOVO vodka drink by LOVO were the winners of Gold awards in this year’s Innovation Challenge.

“We’re thrilled to receive the Gold award.  We have seen some excellent innovation from food and drink products and equipment at this year’s event and the award is testament to the hard work of our staff.  It’s fantastic to see the industry focusing on innovation and providing customers and consumers with forward thinking products and services, ultimately helping to improve the overall customer experience,” says Curtis Paxman, managing director at Brewfitt.

“This was our first year at Casual Dining and it proved to be the perfect platform to showcase our latest packaging innovations to key buyers in the industry.  We were impressed with the quality of the visitors to the show and the icing on the cake was winning Gold in the Innovation Challenge – it was a great honour and a fantastic end to two very successful days,” says Kevin Curran, managing director at Tri-Star Packaging.

"Casual Dining certainly exceeded our expectations!  There was a really high calibre of visitors and we were thrilled to win Gold in the Innovation Challenge 2016,” says Jessica Titcumb, ‎CEO & Founder at LOVO Drinks.

Designed to promote and celebrate new ideas in the market place, the 11 short-listed finalists (chosen from 22 entrants) were decided by popular vote at the Innovation Challenge Gallery on opening day.  They were then invited to live pitch their new innovations to a trio of expert judges, and a theatre audience full of visiting buyers.

The judges – leading pub and restaurant entrepreneur Peter Borg-Neal, chief executive at Oakman Inns & Restaurants; Brian Whiting, owner of Whiting & Hammond; and Keith Bird, chief operating officer at Gourmet Burger Kitchen – applauded the high standard of entries, commenting on the “incredible range of innovations” for 2016.

Gluten Free Pastry Cases from Pidy, Bee Me (natural frozen yogurt and ice creams in eco-friendly pods) from rexmartins, Dairy Free Coconut & Mango Ice Cream from DiSotto Foods, and the Just Add flavour range (concentrated seasonings) from JDM Food Group were awarded Commended.

Finalists included Bar Foods (Gentleman’s Platter), Coolicious Frozen Yogurt (Fat Free Frozen Yogurt Smoothie Base), Twinings (Twinings Chocolate Cookie Tea Shake), and The FoodFellas (Frozen Individual Avocado Halves).

Other show highlights included the announcement of the winner of Casual Dining’s prestigious King of Craft award; as voted for by visitors to the show.  That honour went to Black Isle Brewing Company’s Goldeneye organic Pale Ale.
