Following last month’s acquisition of Crowders, Wyevale Garden Centres has decided the centre will undergo a name change, set to be unveiled on March 16. Members of the local community are being invited to help choose the new name by casting their vote.Visitors will have the opportunity to select from three names put forward by colleagues at the centre: - Wolds View – Trevor Blake and Simon Nagle favourite scenic view of the Wolds from the plant area
- Banovallum – historic Roman name for Horncastle as suggested by Richard Howitt
- Horncastle – Because we are proud to be joining the Horncastle community
Wyevale Garden Centres will be donating £500 to local voluntary emergency services charity Lives in recognition of the community’s support for the initiative.
Crowders Garden Centre has for many years supported Lives, and Wyevale Garden Centres is delighted to continue to support this fantastic local initiative. Specially designed voting boxes will be located in the centre from 8th February 2016, and visitors are invited to place a bulb in the voting box representing their name of choice. Voting will run through to 28th February inclusive.
Ken Dawson, Garden Centre Manager, Crowders Garden Centre, said: “We are thrilled to invite visitors at Crowders to play an important role in shaping the future name of the centre to ensure the new name is in keeping with its rich history and heritage, and chimes with local community values.”
Trevor Blake, a long serving member of staff at Crowders Garden Centre, said: “Crowders has so much heritage and we are delighted to be part of the renaming process. I have been a colleague at the centre for 15 years and it is thrilling have an input in this significant change for the centre.”

The owner of Ingatestone Garden Centre in Essex, which ceased to trade suddenly after more than 75 years, has admitted he "simply could not afford to keep the doors open."
James Harding who closed the doors to the site in Roman Road suddenly and without warning on February 1 said the business was no longer financially viable.
Mr Harding, who took over the business in 2010, said: "To be completely honest the only thing to say is the garden centre has been losing money now for very long time.
It's just got to the stage where we cannot afford to subsidise the business anymore.
"We simply couldn't afford to keep the doors open and we had to close it – we are all extremely sad about this but that is it.
"We have literally run out of money and we have had to close the doors. That is all there is to say."
The first signs that indicated the garden centre could have been in trouble was a simple note posted on the door of the centre on February 1 which read: 'Customer notice. The garden centre is now closed.'

Colin Squire (Chairman) and his daughter Sarah (Deputy Chairman) have announced the appointment of Martin Breddy as Managing Director designate of Squire’s Garden Centres.
Martin will take up the role of Managing Director in May following the retirement of Dennis Espley at the end of April 2016.
Sarah said: "We received a really tremendous number of applications for this position and met some very impressive and credible candidates. In our view Martin’s skills and experience will best complement the talents of our existing team. We very much look forward to working with Martin and to growing and developing our business further in the coming years."Martin is well known and respected in the horticultural industry having spent over a decade with the Scotts Miracle Gro Company where he was promoted to the Managing Director position UK in 2005 and subsequently took on the role of Regional Vice President in charge of the UK and Asia Pacific areas. Prior to that Martin’s experience includes many years with Unilever and subsequently Glendinning Management Consultants. Martin is a graduate of Cambridge University and has attended the Harvard Business School Executive Programme. He was also Chairman of the UK Growing Media Association 2009 – 2011. Martin is cricketing enthusiast and is chairman of Frensham Cricket Club where he is voluntary coach to the youth section and has realised a long-term ambition to qualify as an ECB coach.

The events organisers, i2i Events, helpfully provided a Top 20 Trending Products display to give you a head start. But here are some of the trends discovered by our own team of Spring Fair roving reporters. See the gallery of pictures too. Colours for painted metal garden furniture, for so long dominated by cream and white, are now distinctly pastel-shaded. Acording to Ascalon Design, pale blue (pictured) is now among their top selling finishes. Tractor seats are officially funky indoors and outdoors, say Ascalon. Gloss-painted in shades of red, green and blue, they make a strong heritage statement. Natural unpainted wood was everywhere at Spring Fair. An eye-catcher on the Minster stand was a carved wooden set of the Seven Dwarfs (or Dwarves, for the educated), while Dutch Imports had a range of furniture and ornaments in similarly naked glory ready for painting, varnishing, oiling or shabby-chic-ing. Over at Besp-Oak, a popular supplier of oak furniture to garden centres, we loved their new range of wooden crates, evoking a by-gone age, and the new grey paint finish on certain furniture ranges was attracting plenty of interest from discerning buyers. The grow-your-own trend shows no sign of fading, according to Mr Fothergill’s Seeds, who report that veg seeds continue to outsell flower seeds by some. Margin. Trending strongly in this category, they tell us, are micro greens as more consumers embrace healthy eating. The popularity of firepits increases year-on-year, tapping in to the social essence of outdoor entertaining all year round. Kadai Firebowls, best known for their jumbo-size models, were showing their first mini-bowl - targeting keen al fresco cooks who are happy to have two or three different foods on the go. Products designed to encourage us to take an interest in bee conservation could be found in the home, garden and gift aisles – but the prize for impact has to go to Wildlife World for their giant Bee Nester, a must for any garden centre wildlife department with the space and range to back it up. History & Heraldry are hugely popular suppliers of personalised Christmas lines to garden centre – but they tell us their offering of scented candles is fast becoming their star performer. The new gondola display is a winner. Also destined for sales success are the new personalised candle cups for the special people in our lives. Finally, if designer goods are your bag, you won’t want to miss the ‘Sophie’s Garden’ series of gift kits from Burgon & Ball in collaboration with Sophie Conran – they come in wildflower, edible flower and herb versions – which received a Gift of the Year 2016 award from the Giftware Association. And Briers had their so-stylish William Morris honeysuckle-design garden toolbag featured on i2i’s Trending Area display.

Welcome progress on Sunday Trading, says HTA
Momentum on the issue of Sunday Trading is gathering pace with news of progress in Parliament this week, reports the Horticultural Trades Association. Chief Executive Carol Paris said: "It is encouraging that progress is being made towards updating this law which is no longer fit for purpose.”

The Government’s consultation response out this morning, which quotes the HTA extensively, is in favour of devolving power on Sunday Trading laws to local authorities. This could allow large shops, including garden centres, to open longer on Sunday.
The devolution proposal was added as an amendment to the Enterprise Bill last night to be discussed in Parliament committee over the coming fortnight.
The reforms would give unitary authorities, metro mayors and any new mayors appointed the power to determine Sunday trading rules that reflect the needs of local people and allow shops and high streets to stay open longer. The Government also intends to strengthen and further protect workers’ rights to opt out of Sunday working.
The proposed changes will also enable more competition with online retailers. Under the current legislation, which is over 20 years old and before the era of online retailing, large stores with over 3,000 sq ft of trading space are prevented from opening for more than six hours.
Commenting on the latest update HTA Chief Executive Carol Paris said: “This is a question of choice – both for retailers and consumers. We have worked hard to ensure that the voice of the industry is heard and it is reassuring that the points that we, and individual members have made, have been included in the consultation response. It is encouraging that progress is being made towards updating this law which is no longer fit for purpose.”

It’s officially an early spring with Cornish gardens reporting magnolias already in flower but the GTN Bestsellers data is indicating that garden centre retailing is not benefitting from the mild weather just yet.
Perhaps it’s people’s mindsets that are still in winter modes and habits about not getting out in the garden in January and February are too hard to break. Or is it that we are still not ready for the gardening season with appealing gardening and summer furniture displays?
Whilst our EPoS data supplied for GTN Bestsellers is showing the numbers to be behind last year overall last week’s all products index was the first to be up on 2015 so there are positive signs. We are also hearing of great successes where centres are geared up and ready for spring and summer sales.
At Outerspace in Leicestershire they have already sold a £1,300 suite of CoSi Furniture from Transcontinental. Displayed in the outside planteria rather than in the showroom, Andy Suffolk told GTN: “That’s the earliest full price furniture sale we’ve ever had. It’s outside in the rain so that people realise it is totally waterproof.”

Bumper year of hand-outs from GCA Trust
The Garden Centre Association Trust has just completed its best year ever of approving grants to students of horticulture. More than £10,000 has been awarded to 10 students studying on a wide range of courses. Sue Allen, Trust Chairman (pictured) said: “It is hoped that 2016 will continue to see deserving applications for grants."

More than £10,000 has been awarded to 10 students studying on a wide range of courses including sustainable horticulture, RHS levels two and three, diplomas in garden design and a BSc in Horticulture. Sue Allen, Trust Chairman (pictured) said: “Pershore, Capel Manor, Askham Bryan, Bridgend and Schumacher College Dartington were the colleges involved, ensuring that students across the country benefitted. “At our recent Trust meeting we also sadly accepted the resignation of Jeffrey Bernhard as the longest standing and one of the original Trustees. He was instrumental in the creation of the Trust in 1987 and over the last 29 years has helped guide the Trust wisely, ensuring its healthy continuation. “The newly appointed Trustees are Derek Bunker of Alton Garden Centre, Will Armitage, immediate past Chairman of GCA and Rik Tarbatt, who has been the Trust’s treasurer for many years. “It is hoped that 2016 will continue to see deserving applications for grants, which can be the deciding factor when a student is faced with so many expenses, not least the high course fees. However, the Trust will be putting greater emphasis on courses specifically related to Horticulture rather than Garden Design in the future. “Without the generous support of donors from within our industry the Trust will be unable to continue its work and we are urging industry members to consider making a donation or bequest to the GCA Trust. Justin King, the former CEO of Sainsbury and now Vice Chairman and Head of Portfolio Businesses at Terra Firma, was a guest visitor at Wyevale Garden Centres' Spring Show at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire last week. A total of 1,400 colleagues attended the Spring Show which featured 140 different exhibitors.
WGC holds its annual Spring Show to give colleagues a chance to see its ranges for the year, to be excited and inspired for the season to come.

Repetition and education were the among the key learnings from Sunshine Garden Centre’s Rising Stars finalist Jack Fillingham.
One of the products included in his projects was Empathy Rootgrow, which makes occasional entries into the GTN Bestsellers Garden Products chart.
By increasing signage and availability around the planteria and by educating staff from all departments about the benefits of Rootgrow, Sunshine saw a 49% increase in sales. Jack said: “Everyone of those Rootgrow sales is extra money going into the till, it’s a real add-on sale.”

Haskins is using wireless headset systems from Quail Digital to improve communication among staff and enhance customer service.
Haskins garden centres cover an average sales and display area of around 11,000sqm including onsite restaurants, greenhouses and other outdoor facilities. Like many large outlets, employees face communication challenges which, if handled poorly, can lead to negative feedback or lost custom.
Haskins has deployed the Pro7 Wireless Headset System from Quail Digital in all four garden centres situated in Dorset, Hampshire and West Sussex to improve the overall operational efficiency and provide a better service to its customers.
The system, which comprises lightweight digital headsets and keypads at help points, is providing an enhanced range of coverage extending to the outer limits of the site including the car parks.
The Quail Digital headsets is also improving stock-taking and replenishment processes by enabling instant communication between teams from shop floor to warehouse. There are now significantly fewer loudspeaker announcements needed, creating a quieter more amenable shopping environment.
Commenting on the introduction of headset technology within stores, David Lilly, General Manager at Haskins, Snowhill said: “Enhanced communication means that interaction between staff at the checkouts and other sales areas has become much quicker.
"All our employees have been positive about the solution and as a result of the trial at Ferndown we decided to deploy systems to our other centres.
"I would highly recommend Quail Digital to other garden centre operators; I personally would hate to go back to the days when we didn’t have this solution in place. There are so many positives and great wins – not just for the centre but for our customers too.”

Aylett Nurseries near St Albans and The Old Railway Line Garden Centre near Brecon hosted the first of the 2016 Love Your Plot Masterclasses and they were both hailed as a great success. Delegates heard about the Love the Plot You’ve Got campaign to encourage the 30-45 year olds to visit and enjoy their plots. They discussed some theory and took part in various exercises, then they were tasked with building six inspirational and aspirational displays. Ian Boardman, who facilitated the days, commented: ” The results were amazing. Such enthusiasm and creativity was released!” This is what delegates said about the day: - “Very informative and enjoyable”

Groen-Direkt’s Spring Fair in The Netherlands is the company’s traditional start of the new garden season. Last week's event in Boskoop produced more visitors and subsequently a higher turnover than usual.
Half-unit buying option This International garden plant fair attracted buyers and traders from all over Europe who were enthusiastic and made for higher trading volumes than at the last spring fair. Just like 2015, many forward orders were placed, in spite of the uncertain weather. Almost all the customers made use of the newly introduced half-unit buying option. On reflection, Groen-Direkt got off to a flying start to ignite the new garden season.
More Impulsive Today’s buyers of garden plants are more impulsive, more susceptible to trends and more focused on a product’s looks. “This changing buying behaviour is leading to an increasing demand for flexibility. We will be responding to this need from this Spring Fair onwards by offering our customers the option of ordering half units,” said Groen-Direkt’s Gert Koert.
“In the autumn of 2015 we tested this new sales form in two successful pilots. The buyers’ response at the fair and at our webshop clearly showed that this option meets the need. That’s why we decided to introduce it at our Spring Fair. It enables us to sell larger volumes per sample, which is of course interesting for the growers. For our customers it is an extra service with which we hopefully offer them extra added value. Along with the possibility of sales of Danish trolleys and layers and our special sales concepts, this new option enables us to meet the demand even more effectively.”
Thirty fairs Groen-Direkt will be organising one fair a week from 23 February onwards, and one fair every other week in autumn.
The company will also be hosting several seasonal fairs with an extra large range of seasonal products:
- Spring Days 2016: 11-12 April (the fair will also be opened in the evening of the 11th)
- Summer Days 2016: 30-31 May (the fair will also be opened in the evening of the 30th)
- Winter/Christmas Fair 2016: 8 November.
- The Autumn Fair will take place from 24 until 26 August 2016 (coinciding with the major Plantarium fair). This and the Spring Fair are the largest fairs of the year.

Garden product buyers from Dubai, the US and France together with pet product buyers from Spain and Finland have already confirmed that they will be travelling to the UK to meet with British suppliers at the next ‘Meet the Buyers’ event being staged by the Gardenex and PetQuip export associations.
The event will be held on Wednesday 2 March 2016 at Lea Marston Hotel, Sutton Coldfield.
It is the latest in a series of highly successful ‘Meet the Buyers’ initiatives organised by the two associations, and will run alongside a number of free seminars and information desks involving UKTI, UKEF and export related particpants covering topics such as export finance, shipping, and finding distributors and agents in North America.
As an added benefit for UK suppliers there will be presentations on the key US and European markets, and the workshop aspect of the day will offer help to enable SMEs to make the most of global opportunities in the garden, leisure and pet sectors.This latest initiative from Gardenex and PetQuip is supported and part-funded by UK Trade & Investment, making it a very cost-effective way for suppliers to meet with key buyers from leading overseas markets. The international garden product buyers travelling to the UK to meet with British suppliers are:
- A retailer from Dubai that is now looking to expand its activities by setting up distribution across the GCC states – Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and across the UAE – as well as India. Targets will be leading retailers such as supermarkets, mega-stores, department stores and hardware and other garden-related retailers as well as landscaping companies. The company is now looking for additional garden and landscape-related products suitable for distribution to the Middle East markets. Potential innovative items to sell via its own retail outlet will also be of interest. The buyer’s company stocks a wide range of garden, outdoor leisure and landscaping items and operates a continuous programme of new product introductions.
- A US web store and mail-order operation that has a philosophy of sourcing and selling unique tools and other practical accessories of ‘exceptional quality and solid value’. The company’s focus is on tools, not only for gardening but also for woodworking, DIY, craft and model-making. The buyer is looking for new items for both the pet chain and the wholesale company, and is interested in meeting suppliers of any pet items that do not already have a distributor in Finland. Products that will be of interest include new cat and dog food ranges that are grain free, wet food for cats, meaty treats for dogs and cats and new items for rodents.

The role
To provide horticultural leadership to the team. In particular copywriting and picture management for all our content creation activities, and in so doing creating and sustaining a position of leadership within our markets. The key responsibilities for this role are:
- Subject Matter Expert: Provide horticultural expertise and guidance (plant naming, plant identification, plant descriptions, gardening and horticultural instructions, etc). Work closely with the wider company community (the FM Support Group team and other companies in the group) to improve the quality of plant content and data services etc.
- Plant Content (descriptive and parameters): Sanitise plant lists supplied by customers (correction of plant names, etc). Originate, amend, maintain and develop plant content (descriptive text and parameter information) within a database, according to the commercial needs of our customers, and determined as useful by the teams within the company. Bring together and maintain a team of freelancers (horticultural copywriting, parameters, general proof reading) who can support the delivery of plant content. Lead the creation of "standard" descriptive text and parameter information, which can be used by other UK teams.
- Plant Content (images): Carry out picture selections, as required by Projects and Creative Teams. Support the image needs of the Creative Team.
- Image Management: Manage the contract arrangements and documentation for 3rd party image use. Manage the Picture Rental Service, looking after the contract arrangements, documentation and invoicing.
- Marketing Copywriting: Write copy for marketing activities (B2B). Play an active role in the Marketing Team.

Staff at a Worcester garden centre risked being hurt as they tried to stop a thief who was high on a cocktail of drugs making his escape, a court heard.
One member of staff at the Wyevale Garden Centre in Droitwich Road parked her own car to block the path of Thomas Atkins as he fled in a Ford Focus with two other men, Worcester Crown Court was told. Another member of staff stood between the two cars but had to leap out of the way as Atkins drove at her and his car brushed her leg, Siobhan Collins, prosecuting, told the court.
He then rammed the car blocking his path and reversed and drove into it "three or four times" to knock it away at an angle and get past, causing £1,000 worth of damage, Miss Collins said.
Staff had seen Atkins and his two accomplices, who were not before the court, at about 4.45pm on May 26 last year, she said. They had loaded up a trolley with a barbecue set, some outdoor lights, seat cushions and a packet of marshmallows worth a total of £500 when they were spotted making their way out.
Atkins sped off from the car park towards Droitwich and was picked up by police in Frankley heading towards Birmingham. As they pursued him, he hit speeds of up to 60 mph in 30 mph zones and drove on the wrong side of the road. Onboard footage from the police car camera played to the court showed other cars having to take evasive action as he tried to outrun the police, eventually hitting a dead end and doing a U turn in a park. He drove back out head first into one of the pursuing police cars.
He told police he had taken heroin, diazepam and liquid morphine but he refused to have a blood test.
Atkins, of Hope Place, Birmingham, pleaded guilty to theft, dangerous driving and refusing to give a specimen.
Sukhdev Garcha (CORRECT) said the 47-year-old had a "dangerous" drug habit and committed offences to pay for it. He had been in and out of prison and was already subject to three suspended sentences.
Judge Robert Juckes, QC, said that the driving had been "life-threatening" and was almost at its worst in the car park of the garden centre.
"In your desperate effort to get away from the shop where you had been caught stealing you drove your car at a person trying to stop you and rammed a car out of the way," he told Atkins. "You put their safety very much at risk in the process."
Atkins was given 15 months in jail for dangerous driving with three months for failing to provide a specimen consecutively and three months concurrent for theft, a total of 18 months. The suspended sentences remain in force on his release. He was banned from driving for three years and will have to take an extended re-test.

Anthea McIntrye, MEP, has completed the line-up for the HTA Plant Health Conference to be held on Wednesday 17 February at the National Agri-Food Innovation Campus at Sand Hutton, near York, held in partnership with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA). Providing the keynote address, Anthea will give the latest headlines on the new EU plant health strategy. The new regulations will be more comprehensive and bring in new responsibilities for all professional planting operations, as well as introducing compensation packages. With the UK referendum looming, Anthea will set out what it would mean if we left the EU and yet still wanted to trade in plants. Serving on the Agriculture Committee, Anthea McIntyre (Conservative - West Midlands Region) became an MEP in 2011. She wrote a report on "The future of Europe's horticulture sector - strategies for growth", which was adopted by the European Parliament in 2014. She has now written a further report on “Technological Solutions for Sustainable Agriculture in the EU”. Anthea is also the rapporteur for the legislation on “Protective Measures against Pests of Plants", which has recently concluded trilogue negotiations between the European institutions. The conference aims to clarify everyone’s roles and responsibilities across plant health issues, bringing together nurseries, retailers, specifiers, landscapers, inspectors and regulators. The content will provide delegates with all they need to know in order to comply with plant health legislation and to safeguard the UK. The new restaurant at Garsons Garden Centre in Esher is in an octagonal glass atrium built on a steel frame. It’s a striking concept, designed to draw in the customer. In such a space, expectations will be high, so the catering has to deliver. It does – and not only in terms of customer delight: Compass Instore, which runs the catering at Garsons, expects the restaurant to turnover in excess of £1.5million per year.
Part of a £4.3million investment in Garsons’ retail areas, the restaurant has up to 450 covers – 300 inside and 150 on the outside terrace, overlooking the fields. “With the design, whilst looking ahead, we also aimed to reflect on our history, when trading at London’s Borough Market,” says Ben Thompson, director at Garsons. “This is echoed in the steelwork and timber cladding. The business’s origins are also featured pictorially on the internal low-height walls.”
The kitchen and restaurant design and install was completed by International Food Service Equipment (Ifse), the Croydon-based company specialising in design and build for the foodservice sector. Ifse was brought in after the original design had been drawn up: “Space planning in a scheme like this is paramount,” says Anne Peacock, project manager at Ifse. “Our redesign provided an additional 30 seats for Garsons, giving them very significant potential for extra revenue.”
“Garsons’ aim was to set the bar very high,” says Helen Cotter, regional manager for Compass Instore, who was in charge of getting the new restaurant up and running. “This is as good as any instore retail catering offering, anywhere in the UK. Garsons has established a new benchmark in garden centre restaurants.”
Anne describes the kitchen as ‘a chef’s dream.’ Head chef Melvyn Redding agrees. “It’s a really good size and works well,” he says. “It’s been ergonomically designed and, critically, it’s future-proofed.”
In fact, future-proofing was a key factor in the project. Increasing demand at the old restaurant led to the new build, and that demand looks set to continue to rise. “Both the kitchen and the servery area are set up for expansion,” says Anne. “For example, there are services in the kitchen for an extra three combi steamers and a pot washer, and in the servery area for an extra multideck food display counter.”
The restaurant and kitchen are built around the concept of seasonality, linking the menu directly to produce from Garsons’ fields – the garden centre is at the heart of the largest PYO farm in the UK, with over forty crops on 150 acres. Along with Garsons’ vegetables, meat is sourced from the on-site butcher. The menu will feature specials using these locally sourced ingredients – such as Cumberland curl with kale mash & rich onion gravy, and chicken supreme with Brie, bacon and creamed savoy cabbage.
The kitchen features segregated prep areas for raw meat, cooked meat and vegetables. “One of Garsons’ signature dishes is triple-cooked chips, so there’s also a dedicated spud peeling and chipping area,” says Anne. The kitchen has prime cooking equipment and refrigeration from Electrolux as well as three Rational combi steamers.
Both Garsons and Compass Instore put a major focus on the customer journey, with extensive staff training aimed at giving customers the best possible experience. “We call it ‘give them the pickle,’ meaning going the extra mile,” says Helen. The restaurant design reflects this, by letting the customer choose the type of eating experience they want. Closer to the kitchen pass the seating is relatively formal, gradually becoming more and more informal towards the outside terrace. The furniture at Garsons restaurant was supplied by Abbey Leisure Furnishings, who played an important role in realising the design concept.
In fact, this customer focus is evident in every detail. For example, to ensure that tableware is always perfect, the kitchen has Winterhalter warewashers, including a reverse osmosis water treatment unit that guarantees glasses and crockery are sparkly clean.
Technology is also helping enhance the customer journey at Garsons. “With such a large restaurant, getting the food from the kitchen to the table quickly is critical,” says Helen. “The old restaurant at Garsons, like many other garden centres, used numbered wooden spoons. We’re using Ifse’s Table Tracker, which is a hi-tech alternative.”
Customers are given a Table Tracker tile at the checkout, which they place on their chosen table. The tile links to screens in the kitchen and at the pass that show the table location and the order – so waiters can go straight to the right table as soon as the food is ready. If the customer moves table, the tile automatically updates the location. What’s more, the screens show how long customers have been waiting for their food – going from green to yellow to amber if the wait is too long, warning staff if they need to deal with an issue.
“By telling waiting staff exactly where to go, Table Tracker enables Garsons to be efficient and effective delivering orders to table,” says Helen.
Another theme of the restaurant is the abundance of the offer, hence the displays of produce that are a feature of the servery area: “This resonates with the farm,” says Anne. “It’s especially reflected in the wide range of baked goods and cakes available.” Again, the design underlines this with a dedicated crème patisserie room in the kitchen, which has a viewing window so customers can watch the patisseries being made.
The kitchen pass is open, too, so that customers can see the chefs in action. “Garsons wanted to underline the connection to the kitchen. The open pass also adds to the theatre of the customer experience plus, of course, they get great confidence from being able to see what’s happening in the kitchen,” Anne adds.
“The restaurant was full on its first weekend,” says Ben. “In the first week we traded over £30,000. Ifse played an integral role in developing the project – especially in terms of pushing to expand covers and ensure future-proofing. Having a single point of contact in Anne Peacock was a real advantage in a project of this size.”
“The end result is a stunning testament to Garsons’ vision,” says Helen.

One of the UK’s most popular gardening programmes, BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time, is to be broadcast from The Edible Garden Show & Good Life Live – and members of the public can apply for free tickets to be in the audience at this special recording. Gardeners’ Question Time (GQT) will be recorded on the Saturday of The Edible Garden Show which is being staged at the NAEC, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, from March 11-13. James, a presenter for BBC’s Countryfile, and prolific author Pippa will also be appearing in The Edible Garden Show’s Experts’ Theatre on all three show days giving specialist talks and advice to visitors. The BBC One Show’s resident gardening expert Christine will be on hand on the Sunday. You do NOT have to have a ticket to The Edible Garden Show to attend this GQT recording but if you do want to visit the show itself, you will be required to purchase a ticket to gain entrance to the exhibition area. Met Office forecasts of high temperatures ahead have prompted a leading barbecue supplier to predict record sales as the UK expects a third sizzling summer in a row.
"Many of our on-line and garden centre trade customers reported heavy demand for all types of barbecue last year - particularly at the top end of the market - and some ran out completely.
"A combination of sunshine and stay-at-home holidays is likely to see more barbecue get-togethers than ever this year", said Mark Osborne, chief executive of Outback International UK.
"Research tells us there's been a tripling in demand for barbecues at the premium end of our range in the past three years, which has led to the development of our stainless steel multi-facet Signature for the 2016 season", he said.
Aimed at the food-led up-market barbecue enthusiast, the Signature includes cast iron main burners, a ceramic infrared back burner, ultra fast red-hot side burner, kitchen-style storage space and a motorised rotisserie.
The Signature is factory pre-assembled with its own pallet base for delivery to the customer's specified location.
Outback's other newcomer for 2016 is the Jupiter 2,3 and 4-burner series, features at the top end of which include a removable grill to allow cooking with a pizza stone, wok or griddle, as well as a built-in cabinet storage unit.

All products and services entered into the 2016 Innovation Challenge – designed to promote the best new casual dining innovations over the last twelve months – will have to win over the show’s visitors (including key buyers and decision makers from across the casual dining restaurant and pub sector) before making it through to the exciting live final. Voting opens from 10am on Wednesday 24 February (the first day of the show) at the Innovation Challenge Gallery on the upper feature level. Entrants securing the most votes before 4pm that day (one per visitor) will then be invited to ‘pitch’ their new innovations to a panel of industry judges in the Keynote Theatre the following day (at 12.30pm on Thursday 25 February, with the results to be announced at 2.45pm).
