Another week of sales staying ahead of last year

Almost half of the Total Volume sales deficit caused by the Lockdown closure of garden centres has been made up after another week of sales considerably up on any of the past few years.

As garden centres prepared to re-open the GTN Bestsellers All Epos products index sat at 50.7% down on last year.  After the first week of July that has reduced to 27.5% down.

If the 15% year on year increase of last week was maintained for the rest of the year that would bring us back to less than 10% down on 2019 and above the total sales achieved in 2012.

How are your preparations for Autumn gardening and Christmas coming along?  Do you think we can have a bumper Christmas and make up more of the deficit?

Face covers are bestsellers in advance of becoming compulsory

Analysis of EPoS data for GTN Bestsellers has revealed that a range of decorative re-useable face masks are already selling well in garden centres ahead of the news that the wearing of face masks in all retail venues becomes compulsory in England as well as Scotland from Friday 24th July...

Analysis of EPoS data for GTN Bestsellers has revealed that a range of decorative re-useable face masks are already selling well in garden centres ahead of the news that the wearing of face masks in all retail venues becomes compulsory in England as well as Scotland from Friday 24th July.

The range of Eco-chic face masks from Faye UK would rank as high as the No 6 best selling product if they were aggregated and included in the GTN Bestsellers Garden Products chart, ahead of lines such as Evergreen Garden Care Bugclear Ultra Gun 1 litre and Woodlodge Large Pot Feet.

In Scotland, wearing face masks in garden centres has been compulsory since re-opening.  One scottish garden centre owner told GTN Xtra this week "About 95% of our customers are coming with face masks.  Our staff don't have to police them, the other customer's do that for us."

After the announcement about compulsory face coverings James Clark at the HTA said:  "Garden centres have been safely trading for two months and support additional measures that protect the health of the public such as the wearing of face coverings.

"We welcome the acknowledgement from Government this morning that staff observing social distancing will not have to wear face coverings and do not have to enforce the wearing of face coverings by shoppers. However, there needs to be immediate full clarity, with updated guidance from Government. While face coverings are part of the measures to help promote public health, other actions such as handwashing and social distancing should continue to be observed to protect shoppers and staff alike.

“The HTA is seeking that clarity from the Business Department as a matter of urgency”.

Lockdown gap for plant sales won’t be made up

While weekly plant sales volumes in the GTN All Plants Epos data continue to run ahead of the past four years, it’s clear from our 5 years of plant sales graph that the gap for garden centre plant sales during Lockdown is not going to be made up this year...

While weekly plant sales volumes in the GTN All Plants Epos data continue to run ahead of the past four years, it’s clear from our 5 years of plant sales graph that the gap for garden centre plant sales during Lockdown is not going to be made up this year.

  • Platycodon were the highest re-entry of the week, back in at No 19.
  • Heuchera sales grew by 36% to climb 21 places up the chart.

Clipglove is top of the tests… again!

Hot on the heels of Good Housekeeping’s fantastic reviews if its ClipGlove range, Treadstone Products have just triumphed in another set of tests...

Hot on the heels of Good Housekeeping’s fantastic reviews if its ClipGlove range, Treadstone Products have just triumphed in another set of tests.  This month saw ClipGlove coming top in 4 categories in the Country Living garden glove feature.

“We love reading such positive reviews of our ClipGlove and judging by the number website enquiries we receive after high profile tests such as Country Living, so does the gardening public” says Treadstone’s Head of Brands Dean Winters. “These enquiries also enable us to direct consumers to their local Garden Centre stocking the ClipGlove range”

An array of Garden Gloves was tested by Country Living, with ClipGlove being the only brand winning 4 of the 12 categories including Best Gardening Gloves:

ClipGlove gets its name from the addition of an aluminum Carabiner clip, which keeps glove pairs together when being stored away so that they do not get lost.  With more new products in the pipeline, ClipGlove continues to offer unprecedented levels of comfort, dexterity, protection and innovation.

Retailers interested in working with Treadstone Products can contact the company on 01978 664 667 or email sales@treadstoneproducts.com or for more information, visit www.treadstoneproducts.com.

Mr Fothergill’s recalls some Courgette Zucchini seeds from ranges

Mr Fothergill’s have recalled stocks of Courgette Zucchini with the batch code I on the packet (located after the printed use by date) as a small number of seeds could produce bitter tasting fruits.

Mr Fothergill’s, the Newmarket based seed experts, have recalled stocks of Courgette Zucchini with the batch code I on the packet (located after the printed use by date) as a small number of seeds could produce bitter tasting fruits.

This follows a small number of complaints from customers who have experienced stomach pain and nausea after eating fruits.

All remaining stocks from the warehouse, unpacked seeds and seeds in retail outlets are being recovered and destroyed.

The company believe that the naturally occurring cucurbitacins, which normally exist in very small amounts, have been increased by cross-pollination in the seed production cycle. High temperatures, dryness and other stresses when growing can also cause the increase in cucurbitacins. This causes a bitter flavour and, occasionally, stomach problems once eaten.

Since the flowers are insect pollinated it is possible for a seed received in a seed packet to have been cross pollinated with wild cucurbits, resulting in these high levels of cucurbitacins.

When the cause of the bitterness is bred into the plant like this, the bitterness does not improve with better growing conditions.

The occurrence of this problem is extremely rare, but not unknown, and is untraceable before growing out again for harvest. It is not an issue listed by the Horticultural Trades Association, whose caution labelling guidelines the company voluntarily and rigorously follows. Mr Fothergill’s have traced the problem to one particular lot of seed which comes from a grower with the most meticulous growing and husbandry routines.

It could be that not all plants in a courgette patch could be affected. They can be tasted raw and, if bitter, spit out the sample and discard that plant.

Mr Fothergill’s Tim Jeffries said: “We have reacted promptly to a handful of complaints we have received from our customers to withdraw seed and make efforts to advise customers to avoid any discomfort. The problem is impossible to test for in the seed itself and we have never had a batch of seed like this in our history. We wish to act responsibly and make every effort to advise people.

Anyone who inspects their packets and finds the code letter I printed near the dating information should contact the company through the website mr-fothergills.co.uk and a replacement packet will be sent for future use”

With British summertime now in full swing, barbecue season is officially upon us, and Dobbies has been broadcasting all you need to know to get grilling this summer.

In the new episode of the Dobbies’ podcast, they have teamed up with Weber, to share a host of top tips and cooking advice.

In this episode, host Louise Midgley is joined by ex-chef and Head Grill Master at Weber, Dan Cooper, to discuss the nation’s favourite garden asset. The pair discuss everything from picking the perfect barbecue to suit your space, to the best foods and favourite recipes to grill in the garden.

Head Grill Master at Weber, Dan Cooper, said: “At Weber we’re passionate about good food and good times, and what better way to enjoy the lighter summer months than with some delicious al fresco dining.

“We’ve got a variety of brilliant barbecues and accessories to suit a variety of outdoor spaces and cooks of all abilities, and there really is no limit to what you can cook on the barbecue.”

The episode takes a closer look at how versatile barbecuing can be, offering much more than traditional burgers, sausages and grilled vegetables. Dan explains that by taking an ‘indirect’ cooking approach and treating the barbecue like an outdoor oven, the possibilities are endless, and you can cook everything from homemade pizzas to freshly baked bread.

Graeme Jenkins, CEO at Dobbies, said: “Summer is the perfect season to fire up the barbecue and spend time in the garden. We offer a range of barbecues and a whole host of accessories in store and online, to suit all tastes and budgets. It’s also worth viewing the Facebook Live we recorded with Weber, which features on Dobbies’ Facebook page, for more great advice and questions from the public.”

The Dobbies podcast has a number of episodes available to listen to now, with everything from growing your own produce at home to inspiration and ideas for gardening with kids.

Smiemans complete extension for Cork garden centre despite Corona

In September the expansion of the successful Cork garden centre The Pavilion will open its doors.

Owner of the Pavilion in Cork, Charlie O’Leary said: “Despite the circumstances around COVID-19, Smiemans managed to realise this major expansion on time and to the high quality specification that was expected.”

On the site of the old greenhouse now 1,500 m2 of glass construction of the Venlo type (SP Small Span) has been built. As a result, the garden centre has been almost completely renovated.

The greenhouse has a column height of 4 meters and is equipped with maximum ventilation. As a result, sufficient volume has been created indoors and the maximum permitted construction height has also been met. Good ventilation has always been very important, especially now under the current circumstances. The result is a bigger and beautiful garden centre.

PlantGrow Patent Approved

PlantGrow has been granted full UK approval from the Intellectual Property Office...

PlantGrow has been granted full UK approval from the Intellectual Property Office.

The patent has been a few years in the making and covers a method for producing a fertilisation product disclosed in an application filed in 2015.

PlantGrow is produced through a renewable energy process called Anaerobic Digestion, this is a 100% natural process where organic material is broken down in the absence of oxygen. This produces the base material for all liquids and solid forms of our products.

PlantGrow is a brand-new type of fertiliser and plant food; a breakthrough product, the first of its kind to be introduced to the horticultural market.

Director Steve Suggitt said: "Having spent years in the biofuels industry in the UK, we were the first to create and offer this sustainable way of producing plant foods for Horticulture - we decided to cover our ideas which were in the making for several years due to many different reasons."

The world’s largest garden lifestyle trade show was due to take place on 6-8 September this year but the organisers decided to postpone the show because of the coronavirus pandemic.

UK companies wishing to take a stand have the opportunity to either join the UK Pavilion or exhibit on an independent stand with the benefit of all the support, information and advance publicity offered by the multi-lingual Gardenex team, who will be based on the Gardenex industry information stand within the pavilion in a prime location at the show.

Gardenex has organised strong UK groups at spoga+gafa for many years as one of the Department for International Trade’s Trade Challenge Partners. The event will be on the bid list for cash grant funding for eligible SMEs taking part, which Gardenex administers and distributes.

Director General Amanda Sizer Barrett said: “Following the postponement of this September’s edition of the show and the announcement of the new show dates next year, the Gardenex association team is looking forward to supporting UK exhibitors at spoga+gafa in 2021.

“We provide a comprehensive show support package for exhibitors which includes organising space and stand build if required, plus advice and information on all aspects of exhibiting; excellent international PR coverage before, during and after the event; a multi-lingual Product Innovation brochure which will be sent to international buyers drawn from our exclusive database; plus help during and following the event to maximise sales leads and guidance on converting these to new export sales.”

Gardenex’s comprehensive UK Pavilion and stand package is designed so that participating exhibitors can just turn up and display their products. The association’s dedicated event organisers will help with freight, travel, accommodation and other logistics.

spoga+gafa covers all aspects of practical and leisure gardening and is divided into the following product sectors: garden living, garden creation and care, garden BBQ and garden unique. The 2019 show attracted around 40,000 trade visitors from 124 countries, with over 64% of the visitors coming from outside Germany.

A broad spectrum of buyers is expected to attend next year’s spoga+gafa, including representatives from garden centres, DIY stores, mail order/internet sales, supermarkets, discounters, department stores, specialist furniture retailers, landscapers and many international distributors and wholesalers of garden products that support the retail and contract trade from around the world.

Previous British group exhibitors have seen buyers from countries across Europe as well as leading distributors and retailers from markets such as the US, Canada, Dubai, Israel, China, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand and Australia.

HTA comments on UK Government announcement on post-Brexit trade and the border operating model

James Clark, Director of Policy and Communications at the HTA said: “We welcome additional detail from Government on how the UK’s trade and border policy will operate but are deeply concerned that it does not address the issue of speed of transit for a sector which trades in perishable plants.

“Some plants simply can’t be grown in the UK. Increased delays at ports or at inland customs checks will mean young plants dying. We’re potentially facing four new Government customs and plant health administrative systems and a confusing and unnecessary combination of paper based and digital processes.

“In short, the administrative steps represent a significant increase in costs and time for UK businesses without delivering improved biosecurity or supporting UK production. The result will be that the UK horticulture sector is put at a substantial disadvantage to its European competitors.

“While we want to see greater UK production of plants and trees, the UK ornamental horticulture sector relies on around £350m-worth a year of imported cuttings and young plants, bulbs and other types of plants and trees. These are crucial to helping us supply the plants that people are used to buying in their garden centres and see daily in their parks and public spaces.

“We believe Government should be looking at initiatives such as trusted trader schemes and be much clearer on defining what qualifies as ‘high risk’ plants. We are pressing Government to recognise the uniqueness of ornamental horticulture in their policy development and to ensure that importing and exporting is as simple and cost-efficient as possible.”

Recoup: The 3-year project - 30 years on

Plastics Recycling Charity, RECOUP, are this year celebrating 30 years of influence and work within the plastics recycling value chain...

Plastics Recycling Charity, RECOUP, are this year celebrating 30 years of influence and work within the plastics recycling value chain.   Set-up in 1990 with the primary aim of kick-starting the recycling of PET bottles in the UK.   Initially called Operation RECOUP, the venture, which was non-profit making, brought together major UK bottle blowers, machinery, and material producers to drive forward plastic bottle recycling.

Alan Davey, the then Technical Environmental Manager at LinPac Plastics said of the launch of RECOUP that “we feel that no such vehicle currently exists”.    Looking back, Davey stated “It is strange to think that something we thought would only be needed for 3 years has turned out to be even more relevant today than it was in 1990.  The leadership at RECOUP has taken the organisation to new levels of ambition; bringing recyclability by design to the core of any sustainability programme, driving collaboration across the value chain, championing the need for citizen education, alongside industry best practice and knowledge transference.”

As with all organisations that survive in such ever changing landscapes, RECOUP, has proven its adaptability and capability.   The wealth of knowledge within the organisation is key to driving the ambitious government targets, as well as being able to understand the issues at each part of the value chain, whether; collection, sorting, reprocessing, or end markets.

RECOUP have an unrivalled grasp of what is possible on the ground in terms of plastics recycling and a clear vision of the day when their services will no longer be needed in an  utopian world where all plastics remain in the loop.   In 1994 RECOUP’s first Local Authority UK Household Collection Survey reported that 3,150 tonnes of plastic bottles were being collected.   At this point there were only 8 household bottle collection schemes.   The 2019 UK Household Plastics Collection Survey reported 370,890 tonnes of bottles were collected for recycling with all UK Local Authorities providing a kerbside collection service.   Yet, this does not mean, that the job is done, RECOUP continue to call for even better collection rates for bottles and seek to discuss the challenges within film collection rates (5%) and pots, tubs and trays (31%).   If 2025 targets are to be achieved then much still remains to be done.

Stuart Foster, RECOUP, CEO, commented “No one could have predicted the pressure and attention placed on plastics in recent years fuelled by the ‘Blue Planet’ effect and certainly when RECOUP was launched this was not forecasted to be part of our future working space.   Politicians, consumers, media, and businesses are all demanding change and RECOUP is central to delivering that change through increased recycling and more efficient use of plastic resources.  Clearly, it cannot be right to allow plastics to leak into the environment, but neither is it acceptable to lose the opportunity to use plastic where it is the most appropriate and cost-effective material for so many applications.” We look forward to working with the support of our members to encourage and help foster the right conditions to allow for a viable and resilient system plastics recycling system across the UK.”

Today, RECOUP, boasts over 141 members from waste management company, reprocessor, brands and retailers.   Amongst the roll call are some of the founding members who have been with charity throughout the journey, and for whom, the recyclability of plastics and the reduction of plastic pollution and waste have formed a key part of their environmental and sustainability ambitions.   RECOUP’s work to bring the value chain together whilst promoting collaboration to achieve plastics waste reduction targets is certainly paying dividends.

Gordon McSkimming, Sustainable Packaging Manager, Coca-Cola European Partners, commented “RECOUP add value by bringing together industry experts and brands, and share Coca-Cola’s passion to drive down plastic waste and increase plastics recycling.  Coca-Cola are proud to have been a partner of RECOUP for the last 30 years.  It’s Coca-Cola’s ambition to work towards a world without waste, and we want to see a world where all our plastic packaging is recycled, and none ends up in the rivers or oceans.  Working with RECOUP can help contribute to achieving this objective, and Coca-Cola look forward to continuing to collaborate successfully as we go forward together.”

RECOUP have never been shy about having the conversations direct with the public on plastics packaging and recycling over the years visiting; Jimmy’s Farm, air shows, Festivals, marathons, schools, High Streets and community groups.   The Pledge2Recycle Plastics citizen arm of RECOUP is active across social media platforms and recently tackled the issue of COVID-19 litter with their #dontthrowonthego campaign.

Foster, further commented “We look forward to working with the support of our members to encourage and help foster the right conditions to allow for a viable and resilient system plastics recycling system across the UK.”

From an organisation set up as a 3-year project looking at plastic bottle recycling, RECOUP, has evolved into a respected authority and leading information source of the challenges and opportunities of plastics recycling. The organisation remains at the forefront of discussions to create the right legislative drivers, alongside conversations on Extended Producer Responsibility.   RECOUP has also filled a primary role in ensuring that all parts of the value chain discuss the topical issues of the day in an atmosphere designed to foster partnerships and collaboration for the greater good of the industry.   Throughout September and October this year RECOUP are staging a series of web presentations and discussions (further information at www.recoup.org).   The topics covered reflect the range of RECOUP work from plastics in farming and horticulture, to the opportunities of reuse and refillable strategies and challenges of flexibles recycling.

Any organisation wishing to become members of RECOUP are encouraged to contact enquiry@recoup.org.

Neil and Nicci Gow are closing Fresh @ Burcot Garden Centre later this month after planning permission for a housing development had been negotiated between local planning officers and a developer...

It was announced yesterday (Monday 6th July) that Fresh @ Burcot Garden Centre at Bromsgrove is closing to customers later this month.

Redevelopment of the site has been on the cards now for 4 years while planning permission for a housing development has been negotiated between local planning officers and a developer.

Garden centre owners Nicci and Neil Gow said: “Planning permission to build houses on the site at Burcot was finally granted a few weeks ago, and we feel the time is right to move on. We have very much enjoyed building up the garden centre over the last 12 years, to the thriving business it now is, but feel the time is now right for us to move on.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our staff for their loyalty and hard work over the years. We would also like to say thank you to all our customers and suppliers who have supported us.

"We have both worked in the trade all our lives and have many friends involved in the industry, so are sure we will still be keeping in touch with everything and everyone .  The industry is changing rapidly at the moment and the next few months are going to be challenging.

"We wish all our colleagues; retailers, suppliers or growers, well for the future and good luck to you all.”

Fresh @ Burcot Garden Centre was bought by Neil and Nicci Gow from Hurran’s Garden Centres in January 2008. Using their considerable expertise from many years working in garden retailing and Nicci’s background in growing, they built the garden centre into one of The Midland’s most popular traditional garden centres and the ‘go-to’ place for gardening grow-how!

A sale to clear stock will commence on 7th July.

There will also be fixtures and fittings for sale which could be of use to local retailers. Further information can be obtained from Neil or Nicci Gow on 01527 873470
