Jude Law, David Tennant and other stars present the Garden Re-Leaf Day quiz for 2014

Hollywood star Jude Law and Dr Who actor David Tennant have joined the growing list of household-name celebrities to support Garden Re-Leaf Day’s popular Gardening Quiz, by recording a round of questions.  The brain-teasing audio quiz is available as a customer event opportunity to any garden centre taking part in the annual fund-raising day in March.

The two stars join Skyfall’s ‘Miss Moneypenny’, actress Naomie Harris – currently on cinema screens as Winnie Mandela in Long Walk to Freedom – in presenting a section of the questions.  EastEnders cast members Danny Dyer (new Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter) and Patsy Palmer (fiery market trader Bianca Butcher) have also lent their familiar voices to the quiz, in addition to a round recorded by impressionist Alistair McGowan – in the vocal style of celebrities John Humphrys, David Mitchell, Matt Baker, Dara Ó Briain and Stephen Fry.

David Tennant, Naomie Harris and Alistair McGowan have agreed to support Garden Re-Leaf Day’s popular Gardening Quiz.

The quiz – which includes both general knowledge and gardening rounds – can be ordered by all retailers, suppliers and other organisations participating in Garden Re-Leaf Day; with funds raised going towards its chosen charity, Greenfingers. The production of the quiz and accompanying CDs are being provided by Garden Radio, as part of its support for Garden Re-Leaf Day.

The quiz is also a ready-made opportunity to boost customer footfall, as Garden Re-Leaf Day’s founder and Hillview Garden Centre CEO Boyd Douglas-Davies explains: “We’re enormously grateful that so many mainstream stars have supported this year’s Garden Re-Leaf Day quiz – it will be more popular than ever!  It’s a simple way for retailers both to take part in Garden Re-Leaf, and attract scores of customers in-store at the start of the spring gardening season.  You can make the event even more effective by running other sales promotions, refreshments and fund-raisers alongside. The organiser’s pack costs just £100 and is available by calling 01993 871456 or emailing pat@gca.org.uk

Garden centres and suppliers across the UK are expected to take part in the third annual Garden Re-Leaf Day, held on Friday 14 March 2014 and across the weekend. Participants – who can run any number of nationally-coordinated or local fund-raising initiatives – are being urged to register their involvement as soon as possible by emailing the organising team at info@gardenreleaf.co.uk with an overview of your planned activities.  Your location and events will then be added to the Garden Re-Leaf Day website: www.gardenreleaf.co.uk.

As in its first two years, Garden Re-Leaf Day’s nominated charity in 2014 is Greenfingers; the nationwide charity dedicated to building gardens in children’s hospices around the UK. Since 2012 Garden Re-Leaf Day participants have raised more than £116,000 for the cause; enabling several life-enhancing hospice gardens to be created.

In December it was announced that garden centres taking part in Garden Re-Leaf Day can also win a ‘money-can’t buy’, footfall-boosting visit to their garden centre by popular ITV gardener David Domoney on Sunday 16 March 2014 (the Sunday immediately after Garden Re-Leaf Day). David is offering a series of 30-minute expert talks on that date to the garden centre that wins Garden Re-Leaf Day’s new, free to enter ‘Gardening Date with David’ competition – which has a closing date of Friday 7 February 2014.

Any garden retailer registering their participation in Garden Re-Leaf Day by 7 February is eligible to enter. To register for Garden Re-Leaf Day and enter the ‘Gardening Date with David’ competition, email info@gardenreleaf.co.uk by 7 February with your garden centre details, also stating in 200 words or less, how you would make the most of David’s visit on 16 March as part of Garden Re-Leaf Day.  The best idea wins him.

TV presenter and gardening journalist Richard Jackson, an active supporter of both Greenfingers and Garden Re-Leaf Day, confirmed: “The quiz and David Domoney competition are both fantastic, easy ways of taking part in Garden Re-Leaf Day this year; benefiting both your business and the Greenfingers charity. Everyone wins, so let’s make this a record-breaking year!”

Happy start to the New Year for garden centre sales

It may have been wet and windy but that doesn’t appear to have dented garden centre footfall. Clearance events of Christmas lines have sold through in high volumes to push week 1 volumes in the GTN Bestsellers Epos data up 34% on the first week of 2013...

It may have been wet and windy, but that doesn’t appear to have dented garden centre footfall.

Clearance events of Christmas lines have sold through in high volumes to push week 1 volumes in the GTN Bestsellers Epos data up 34% on the first week of 2013, and make it the highest total volume first week during the last six years that we’ve been collating Epos data.

See the back page for increases also in Garden Product and Growing Media sales as the New Year kicks off in style.

As last year ended, GTN Bestsellers data for December showed overall sales volumes up 14%. The Top 50 Garden Products sales volumes were up 11% in December, while the Top 50 Christmas products sales volumes were down 5%.

Our take on all of that is that overall sales were up because footfalls were higher than last year. Gardening, catering and gift sales have benefitted and we expect total volume sales of Christmas were up on last year but spread across an even larger number of products – the number we have on our Epos data is mind blowing!

GTN Bestsellers Top 50 sales volumes compared to the same week last year:

  • Garden Products – up 53%
  • Veg 2 Gro – down 17%
  • Growing Media – up 4%
  • All items index – up 34%

Dobbies plans to expand its retail space at Braehead and Dundee

Planning applications have been submitted by Dobbies Garden Centres to extend its offer at its centres at Braehead, Renfrewshire and Dundee, Tayside. The new space would be made available to businesses which will complement the existing Dobbies offer.

At its Dundee garden centre, the retailer wants to create additional space in the gap between its main garden centre premises and its neighbouring House of Angus retail visitor centre near Monifieth.

At Dobbies, Braehead, the proposals are to create new space to the front of the building, as well as reconfiguring current space in the plant sales area at the rear of the building.

A Dobbies spokesperson said: “We are keen to introduce new concepts to our Braehead and Dundee centres to offer an improved experience for our customers. It is envisaged that this new investment will lead to significant economic benefits for the local areas.

"The proposals will create a number of new job opportunities with staff positions created within the new space, and also potential for spin-off benefits for the existing and new businesses by drawing more visitors to the area.”

Subject to planning permission, Dobbies targets to open this space towards the end of 2014.

Garden centres urged to take part in ‘It Starts with a Pot’ campaign
Garden retailers across the country are being encouraged to help get people growing this spring by becoming involved in the ‘It Starts with a Pot’ cross industry PR initiative which is being launched this month...

Garden retailers across the country are being encouraged to help get people growing this spring by becoming involved in the ‘It Starts with a Pot’ cross industry PR initiative which is being launched this month.

The ‘It Starts with a Pot’ campaign is designed to show people that gardening does not have to be complicated but that it can be straightforward and fun.

Commenting on the campaign HTA Chief Executive Carol Paris said: “Through this campaign we are hoping to encourage more people to enjoy their outdoor space this spring. We are trying to demystify gardening and demonstrate how just by planting a few pots, or indeed any other containers, you can provide colour and impact to your outdoor space effectively.

“Garden Industry Marketing Board members are encouraging the wider industry to embrace the campaign by using the logo on marketing materials, with in-store promotions and linking in with events and activities such as Garden Re Leaf Day (14 March), Cultivation Street (launch at the Ideal Home Show 14-30 March) and National Gardening Week (14-20 April).”

The HTA will be working with consumer media on related feature pieces around planting in pots as well as providing ‘It Starts with a Pot’ logos and further resources which will be available at www.the-hta.org.uk/iswap. There will also be plenty of social media activity including a Pinterest page which already includes plenty of inspirational ideas. View and contribute at www.pinterest.com/startswithapot.There will be plenty of twitter activity too using the hashtag #plantapot.

The HTA will also be showcasing ‘It Starts with a Pot’ with trade and consumer media at the Garden Press Event on 13 February at The Barbican in London.

A starter for ten - ideas for incorporating ‘It Starts with a Pot’ theme into existing in store activities and events.

1.     Product merchandising – putting plants with alternative containers like welly boots, tea cups, watering cans, clogs, shopping bags etc.

2.     Feature displays – examples of small space gardens grouped together to create a centre piece or individually positioned around the garden centre.

3.     Occasions – promoting pots and containers suitable for gifts on occasions/events such as Mothers’ Day, Easter Day, World Cup, Halloween, Christmas.

4.     In store kids’ activities - plant a pot for Mothers’ Day, decorate a pot, making bird feeders from pots, making paper pots, recycled pots.

5.     Themed pots – grouping plants to create recipe pots for cocktails, chefs, salad, grow your own and showcase by placing examples in the café, cookware area and so on.

6.     Seasonal pots for spring, plant of the month pots.

7.     Planting demonstrations and activities.

8.     Plant pots in cafes – growing herbs on the table, bread in pots – helping to making the connection between growing and eating.

9.     Competition to grow in the most unusual container and post onto your Facebook page or bring in store to display.

10.  Interesting and fun displays of pots in store.

The possibilities are endless – let us know what you plan to do with the ‘It Starts with a Pot’ theme and email us at iswap@the-hta.org.uk.

UKTI helps garden shed firm with international expansion plans

Dunster House, a leading supplier of high quality log cabins and other wooden garden buildings, is surging ahead with its international plans thanks to the support of UK Trade and Investment...

Dunster House is a premier producer and supplier of high quality log cabins and other wooden garden buildings, with a turnover in excess of £25 million. Established in 1994 by husband and wife team Chris and Pam Murphy, its range includes climbing frames, garden offices, sheds, greenhouses and summer houses.

Its main office is based in Bedford, which employs over 180 staff. With its own work force, vehicles and factories the company doesn’t rely on any outside agents or middle men.

Over the last few years Dunster House has made a concerted effort to expand its international activity in order to grow the business.  “The UK market is simply too small for us,” said Chris. “We’re a company that thinks internationally.  We have 19 factories located in the UK and Eastern Europe, with 450 employees in total.”

Although, as a large organisation with its own global marketing department they already had the expertise to take the business forward internationally, Chris decided to approach UKTI for help and advice and was put in touch with UKTI trade adviser Anton Rudgalvis. An initial meeting with Anton was to lead to an ongoing seven year relationship between the two where, as Chris puts it:  “UKTI acts in a semi-consultative role for the business.”

“As far as I’m concerned the more knowledge I can acquire the better,” says Chris(left) “UKTI can always answer any questions we have on market entry strategies and legal requirements for entering into overseas markets.  I always approach Anton when I need clarification on issues and just cherry pick what I need to know from the information I’m given.”

“Dunster House is a great example of a larger company who uses UKTI on a bespoke basis,” says Anton.  “Chris comes back to us repeatedly because he knows we give clear and impartial business advice whenever they choose to enter a new international marketplace.”

A specific example of this occurred in 2012 when Chris contacted UKTI for advice on how to facilitate an expansion into the UAE following an enquiry from a potential client.  Anton explains:  “UKTI trade advisers are often sector or country specific.  In this instance I was able to give Chris advice on the UAE as I had lived in Dubai for four years and had a wealth of commercial experience having been the General Manager of a UAE-based production company.

The UAE remains the UK’s largest market in the Middle East and 13th biggest globally, but it’s a difficult market to break into without support - for example, many UK firms make costly mistakes by not adhering to UAE business etiquette such as the importance of regular face-to-face meetings.”

Chris took Anton’s advice on board, combining it with his own knowledge of the market, and is now successfully trading in the UAE and other parts of the Middle East.  Dunster House secured an initial order for £20,000 and sales to the Middle East are expected to reach £180,000 during this financial year.

In 2013, Chris approached Anton once again for advice regarding concerns about a potential contract with a Chinese client.  Anton explains:  “Working together with the China Britain Business Council (CBBC), our investigations confirmed that this contract, potentially worth £300,000 was in fact a scam.  This is a good example of how UKTI can help eliminate risks to businesses abroad.”

He adds:  “Whatever the size of a business, our clients have direct access to teams of Commercial Officers in British Embassies throughout the world and this can significantly speed up the process of international expansion.”

Dunster house is going from strength to strength internationally and has now expanded into Japan, Russia, Romania, Norway, Hungary, Romania and Israel.

“The company is expanding at a fantastic rate of knots,” says Anton, adding:  “It is really good to see overseas growth coming from both new and existing international markets. Chris and his team continue to call on us as and when required – they know they will receive impartial advice and they understand the way UKTI works. I wish them every success as they move forward and I look forward to working with them in the future.”

“I would recommend that any company of the same size and stature of Dunster House contact UKTI. The help and information they give us is greatly appreciated,” says Chris.

War commemorations, anniversaries and scientific displays are just some of the highlights within the Great Pavilion at the 2014 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored by M&G Investments (May 20-24).

Birmingham City Council has joined forces with the Royal British Legion and the charity Thrive to honour the First World War through a floral exhibit which will capture the story of life on the frontline. The display will feature important wartime memorabilia as well as giant poppies and reconstructions of the trenches where troops were stationed. Pennard Plants will also be commemorating the outbreak of the war with two back to back gardens reflecting the times preceding and following 1914. Heritage cultivars will grow in the formal pre-1914 garden while wildflowers including poppies will dominate the post-1918 area.

Several exhibitors will celebrate milestones at the 2014 show including Perennial, which has teamed up with designer Jo Thompson to mark the charity's 175th anniversary. Jo will work with Jim Buttress and Hardy's Cottage Garden Plants to produce the display. Jon Wheatley from Stone Barn will create a floral spectacle to celebrate 50 golden years of South West in Bloom reflecting the diversity of the area. This will feature dahlias as well as a selection of new plants. Raymond Evison will launch a number ofClematis. One of these, chosen to celebrate his 25th Gold medal at RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2013, features in a set of Guernsey postage stamps.

The 2014 RHS Chelsea Flower Show welcomes a number of new nurseries, including Drointon Nurseries, which will exhibit a display of Auricula primulas giving a more contemporary theme to the traditional presentations of this type of plant. Brighter Blooms will make its debut with a display ofZantedeschia, and PW Bamboo will also display a new bamboo exhibit.

The new Discovery area in the Great Pavilion, which replaces RHS Environment, will be full of scientific and educational exhibits including Sparsholt College's ‘The Paper Chase' display on the botanical source of paper and how it is used in everyday life. Scotts Miracle Grow will bring a display of plants grown solely by schoolchildren, demonstrating how differing composts, plant foods and care regime affect how plants grow. At the Our Planet display visitors will control the flight of bumblebees and butterflies by playing an interactive game.

The Great Pavilion will also host many other exciting displays including the M&S Great Pavilion exhibit, designed by Sallis Chandler Landscape Design. This will highlight the commercial production of cut flowers and the harmonious relationship this process has to beneficial insects and pollinators in the UK and around the world.

The Great Pavilion will be bursting with more than 100 other exhibits from the world's best nurseries, growers, florists and floral arrangers making it an unmissable attraction at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Five men arrested after attempted burglary at South Devon garden centre

Five men from the Bristol area have been arrested in connection with an attempted burglary at a South Devon garden centre.

Jack’s Patch Garden Centre in Newton Road, Bishopsteignton, was targeted on Monday, January 6, between 9.10pm and 9.40pm.

Police said they believed five suspects were involved and were travelling in a silver Vauxhall Corsa and black Vauxhall Astra.

The police helicopter was called to assist in the search.

A Corsa was stopped later in the Bristol area and three male suspects were arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary by officers from Avon and Somerset Police and taken into custody in Bristol. They were aged 16, 17 and 18.

HTA welcomes Defra’s action on new woodland planting
The HTA have today welcomed Defra’s ministerial statement on woodland planting...

The HTA have today welcomed Defra’s ministerial statement on woodland planting.

To many HTA grower members, the promise to uphold current planting levels under the Rural Development Programme (RDP) gives assurance that there is a market for their trees and it enables these businesses to plan ahead.

Although the creation of 2,000 hectares falls short of the country’s 12% woodland cover target during 2014/15, the HTA welcomes the assurance that new planting applications will be considered.

The HTA remains very concerned on behalf of its members about what happens from 2015/16 onwards and we look forward to working closely with Defra on the content and structure of the new RDP and the new environmental land management grants.

HTA Head of Horticulture Raoul Curtis-Machin said: This is great news for growers, and a very welcome boost at the start of the year. It will help businesses to plan ahead and hopefully provide job security. The UK horticulture industry is really doing its bit to try to provide clean, disease-free quality plants and being able to trust in a viable marketplace helps the process hugely.

Alongside our members we have worked hard with Defra to ensure the sustainability of the tree planting sector. We feel that a strong British growing sector is the key to economic success and robust plant health policy, both of which we want to support the Government in developing.”
