The Garden Centre Association revealed its Scottish and Northern Irish regional winners at a presentation last Friday, September 25, 2015 at Glendoick Garden Centre in Glencarse, Perth.
Garden Wise Plant & Garden Centre (above) was awarded Best Garden Centre (GC) and Raemoir Garden Centre (below) won Best Destination Garden Centre (DGC) in Scotland. Creative Gardens Donaghadee scooped Best Garden Centre in Northern Ireland.
The awards were announced by GCA Inspector Liz Hutson and presented by Scotland Regional Chair, Yvonne Ritchie from Brechin Castle Garden Centre. Commenting on Raemoirs win, Liz said; "in my opinion the food offering at Raemoir is amongst the best in the UK, it's great food with added pixie dust."
Iain Wylie, Chief Executive of the GCA, said: “The Scotland and Northern Ireland area awards evening is always a popular event and this year proved to be no exception. It was a great opportunity to visit one of our newer members, Glendoick, and we thank Kenneth Cox and his team for hosting the occasion. There were some fantastic examples of best practice and innovation shown in the presentation and there were some very worthy winners. “The award for Best Customer Service went to Garden Wise Plant & Garden Centre in Scotland and Creative Gardens Donaghadee in Northern Ireland while the award for Most Improved Centre in Scotland went to Klondyke Garden Centre – Mayfield and Bushmills Garden centre in Northern Ireland.” The awards are decided by the results of the annual inspections, which take place at all GCA garden centres. Garden centres have no advance warning about when their inspection will take place and they do not have the option to turn away the inspector. The Best Garden Centre and Best Destination Garden Centre awards went to the members that scored the highest overall mark in the area in their annual inspections. The top scoring centres overall, nationally, in both the Destination Garden Centre and Garden Centre categories will be re-inspected before the titles of Garden Centre of the Year and Destination Garden Centre of the Year are announced at the GCA annual conference taking place in January 2016. South-west buying group recruits two new centres - and wants more
Two garden centres have joined the Great Western Buying Group, bringing the membership total to nine. The group says it is looking to expand further...

Two garden centres have joined the Great Western Buying Group, bringing the membership total to nine. The group says it is looking to expand further.
The new recruits are Caerphilly Garden Centre in South Glamorgan and Sunnydale Garden Centre in Cwmbran.
Steve Searle, store manager at GWBG member Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre in Somerset said the group had built good relationships with the best suppliers in the garden industry during its 15 years of working together. “We felt it was the right time to increase our presence in other parts of the country and we’re thrilled to have Caerphilly Garden Centre and Sunnydale Garden Centre come on board,” he added. “The two centres fit well with our geographical area and will strengthen our relationship with suppliers.”
The GWBG is a group of independent family-run garden centres who share best practice in buying and marketing. It is currently looking for more new members.
Phil Taylor, MD at Caerphilly Garden Centre and Sunnydale Garden Centre, said: “We are very pleased to have become part of such a prestigious and well organised buying group. A number of options were open to us but we felt that the Great Western Buying Group gave us the best fit for our centres.

The 24-centre Klondyke group is to bank exclusively with HSBC after securing a five-year deal that will fund the redevelopment of five outlets. The projects, expected to contribute to a projected group turnover increase to £50 million, include the planned re-build of Savilles at Leeds, the completion of an expansion at Stokesley, and refurbishments with new restaurants at Weavervale, Northwich and Polmont CEO Bob Hewitt, who is retiring next year, said the support from HSBC would enable the group to fulfil its ambitions and invest funds back into the business. He added: “Plants are our passion and we will always stay true to the quality of our products. However, we want to evolve Klondyke sites from traditional garden centres into social places for people to meet friends and family.” He said Klondyke aimed to capitalise on recent successes that have led to strong turnover growth. Doug Baikie, head of large corporate for HSBC in Scotland, said: “Klondyke Group’s model for growth has proved to be a success and we are very proud to be backing its plans for the future. Their sites are transforming into full-service retail operations but are still rooted in the company’s traditional passion for gardening.”

Gardens looking too good...are customers waiting for Christmas?
Are our customers running out of energy for gardening and garden centre shopping or just resting before the Christmas bonanza? It’s mid-September and usually by now general product sales are rising as Autumn gardening gets going but that does not appear to be happening this year – at least not according to volume sales data supplied for GTN Bestsellers...
Are our customers running out of energy for gardening and garden centre shopping or just resting before the Christmas bonanza?
It’s mid-September and usually by now general product sales are rising as Autumn gardening gets going but that does not appear to be happening this year – at least not according to volume sales data supplied for GTN Bestsellers. For the first time this year all of our GTN Bestsellers chart indexes are down year on year, and also down week on week.
Is it just because gardens are still looking so good after an excellent year for everything that grows? Have you all sold so many ‘looking good’ plants that are still performing, which means our customers just don’t want to switch into planting bulbs and pansies?
Even solar light sales are down year on year this week.
High sales volumes of pots, top soil, manure and onion sets indicate that the really keen gardeners are getting on with their gardening. What we need is for the majority to get growing in the garden as soon as possible.
Perhaps the opening of Christmas displays over the coming weeks will help kick gardening sales back into action, as well as get the Christmas cash rolling into the tills. When is your Christmas display opening? Near to the GTN office, Baytree Garden Centre opened their displays last weekend and the grand opening at Van Hage Peterborough was yesterday (Friday).

After the success of the Love The Plot You’ve Got Masterclasses that led to inspirational merchandising displays like this one at St Peters in the summer, more sessions have been arranged for this Autumn.
Last week a great day was had by all recently at Aylett’s, St Albans, at the Love The Plot You’ve Got Masterclasses. Delegates explored ideas for using the GIMB ‘Love The Plot You’ve Got’ message in the garden centre on the lead up to Christmas. The principles work just as well indoors as out – helping customers make the most of their space for relaxing and entertaining. One of the excellent displays built during the day was a black and white themed display – built in just half an hour – using soothing plants for a conservatory setting. Ian Boardman, who facilitated the day, said: “It was all about giving garden centre teams ideas to try back at their centres. There was so much enthusiasm in the room – I had to hold them back rather than spur them on! PATS Telford opens its doors at 9am today (Sunday) with a record number of 200-plus exhibitors from the UK and overseas showcasing hundreds of new pet products and services.
“There is a tremendous buzz surrounding the show,” says organiser Annie Foord. “So much is happening at PATS Telford over both days of the exhibition, it really is a must-visit event for retailers and buyers. Warren Road Primary School is the winner of the Stewart Garden Schools programme 2015. The school, based in Orpington, Greater London, will receive £1,000 to spend at its local garden centre.
Created and run by Stewart Garden, the gardening division of UK manufacturer, Stewart Group Holdings, the programme was open to school pupils aged 6-11 years. It challenged schools to be creative with Stewart Garden products.
Warren Road Primary School impressed the judges with the way the programme was incorporated into the curriculum and how Stewart Garden products were used, such as the 22cm Kitchen Garden Propagator sets and premium seed tray. Activities for the programme were done through Warren Road Primary School’s Eco Club, which is enjoyed by students from reception to year six.
The students first weeded existing beds for seedlings, before demonstrating great initiative by hanging CDs and pots over the plants to frighten birds away from their produce.
At the end of the programme, Warren Road Primary School produced courgettes, potatoes, parsley, carrots, onions, tomatoes and other great produce. The students planted herbs and flowers with their vegetables to make colourful beddings and keep away pests.
Throughout the competition, Warren Road Primary School installed Stewart Garden water butts to collect and reuse rainwater and their Composter’s for organic fertiliser.
Christine Millband, sustainability subject leader at Warren Road Primary School, commented: “Everyone at Warren Road Primary School is ecstatic to win the Stewart Garden Schools programme 2015. Students from reception to year six were all involved in the project and their enthusiasm to grow was inspiring. Throughout the programme we wanted the students to make the key decisions, from which produce to grow to how much they should be sold for. With the £1,000 to spend at our local garden centre, we want to continue this. The students will decide how the money is spent to sustain the fantastic work they have already done. The Stewart Garden Schools 2015 programme has taught our students so many valuable lessons about growing your own produce that will last a lifetime.”
Congratulating the worthy winner, Andy Burns, managing director at Stewart Garden said: “Everyone at Stewart Garden would like to congratulate Warren Road Primary School. Great skills and real innovation made its entry standout. Warren Road Primary School has instilled an important understanding of growing your own produce among its students. Hopefully, this will last a lifetime.”

Each of the participating schools across the UK received kits, which equipped them to start growing their own fruit and vegetables. Worth more than £400, the kits included:

- two 22cm Kitchen Garden Propagator sets
- plastic plant pots
- 70cm Corinthian Trough
- 5 litre watering cans
- three varieties of easy-grow vegetable seeds from Pippa Greenwood’s range
- compost donated by participating garden centres and professional grower’s specialist, J Arthur Bowers
- promotional materials and an informative booklet produced by Stewart Garden
Almost 200 schools across the UK, from the Isle of Wight to Stirling, have participated in the Stewart Garden Schools Campaign since 2013. In 2014, Bradley Barton Primary School took first prize with its Wizard of Oz inspired garden.

A team of intrepid jumpers hurled themselves out of a plane to raise funds for Greenfingers next planned garden at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in Sheffield. The jump tooke place at Netheravon in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside, under the capable guidance of the Army Parachute Association. The money raised by those taking part will help Greenfingers improve two gardens spaces at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in Sheffield. The reflective and peaceful areas outside the hospice’s end of life suites, will provide great comfort to grieving families staying at the hospice. Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford is campaigning for the benefits of ‘The Great British Hedge’ from this month onwards. It has started an initiative to promote the benefits of the British hedge to the horticultural retail and amenity and landscaping sectors. Adam Dunnett, Sales and Marketing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “Hedges are natures fences – natural boundary markers, privacy givers and security providers. Adam continued: “Planning and planting a hedge can be a daunting prospect for the average gardener. For retailers we have put together a comprehensive range of varieties, available in both three litre and five litre pots, giving them all they need to build a fantastic hedging offering right through the autumn and winter. “Each plant is supplied with extra large, fully informative picture labels and support with a giant correx board classifying each product line by its characteristics. By following our simple classification chart retail customers will be able to select the variety which best suits their needs. “For amenity and landscaping customers we offer hedging supplied in three ways – bareroot, rootball and container grown. Each method of supply has certain seasonal limitations. We are one of the only UK suppliers to offer ‘All Year Round’ availability on hedging.” Wyevale Nurseries is also developing more ‘Specialist Hedging Forms’ – Pleached and Pre-formed. Pre-formed hedges are plants that have been intensively pruned and trimmed into shape to give an instant desired effect of a finished hedge. Pleached trees is a technique of pruning that produces a flat frame creating a two-dimensional effect with branches spreading sideways in one plane (i.e. flat) held on top of a central tree stem. These are commonly used to create a green screen above a fence level or a raised wall. Wyevale Nurseries is one of the largest family-run wholesale nurseries in the UK. It was established in 1930 by Harry Williamson, a horticulturist and entrepreneur. It became the company it is today under the leadership of his son, Peter, who sadly passed away in 2011. The Williamsons’ saw the opportunity to sell their product to an undeveloped retail market, creating one of the first garden centres, followed by a chain. In 1987, the retail side needed to expand and the 19 garden centres were sold as a PLC. The family then turned its focus to Wyevale Nurseries Ltd. It continues to be a family-run business with ownership and joint chairmanship currently being held by the third generation, Heather and Simeon Williamson, with plans for the fourth generation to takeover in the future. Wyevale Nurseries has a significant product range and is regularly introducing new plants. It offers a large variety of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants to garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners.

Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre is stocking a range of gluten-free cakes in its new Elm Tree Restaurant... Denis Guillemin, Restaurant Operations Manager at the award-winning, family run garden centre at Monkton Heathfield near Taunton, said: “Enjoying a delicious cake is one of life’s little pleasures and we want to make sure everyone can enjoy an afternoon pick-me-up, which is why we are stocking a range of delicious, homemade gluten-free cakes from some of our suppliers. “We have a selection of Victoria sponges and date and almond cakes as well as gluten and dairy-free chocolate brownies and sticky toffee pudding from Homemade with Love. “Our supplier GFree provides us with individually wrapped Millionaire’s shortbread, fruit cake slice, lemon drizzle cake, Bakewell slices, scones and chocolate fudge cake.” In addition to this the garden centre also serves a gluten-free gravy, chips and a selection of quiches, pasties and sausage rolls on its Deli counter. In order to avoid cross contamination the gluten-free items are displayed separately from the normal items on offer. Denis added: “Our gluten-free cakes are some of our first steps to providing options for people with varying diets and those who are health conscious. We also offer vegetarian options as well.”
