The awards were announced by GCA Inspector Liz Hutson and presented by Scotland Regional Chair, Yvonne Ritchie from Brechin Castle Garden Centre.  Commenting on Raemoirs win, Liz said; "in my opinion the food offering at Raemoir is amongst the best in the UK, it's great food with added pixie dust."

Iain Wylie, Chief Executive of the GCA, said: “The Scotland and Northern Ireland area awards evening is always a popular event and this year proved to be no exception. It was a great opportunity to visit one of our newer members, Glendoick, and we thank Kenneth Cox and his team for hosting the occasion. There were some fantastic examples of best practice and innovation shown in the presentation and there were some very worthy winners.

“The award for Best Customer Service went to Garden Wise Plant & Garden Centre in Scotland and Creative Gardens Donaghadee in Northern Ireland while the award for Most Improved Centre in Scotland went to Klondyke Garden Centre – Mayfield and Bushmills Garden centre in Northern Ireland.”

The awards are decided by the results of the annual inspections, which take place at all GCA garden centres. Garden centres have no advance warning about when their inspection will take place and they do not have the option to turn away the inspector.

The Best Garden Centre and Best Destination Garden Centre awards went to the members that scored the highest overall mark in the area in their annual inspections.

The top scoring centres overall, nationally, in both the Destination Garden Centre and Garden Centre categories will be re-inspected before the titles of Garden Centre of the Year and Destination Garden Centre of the Year are announced at the GCA annual conference taking place in January 2016.

Two garden centres have joined the Great Western Buying Group, bringing the membership total to nine. The group says it is looking to expand further.

The new recruits are Caerphilly Garden Centre in South Glamorgan and Sunnydale Garden Centre in Cwmbran.

Steve Searle, store manager at GWBG member Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre in Somerset said the group had built good relationships with the best suppliers in the garden industry during its 15 years of working together. “We felt it was the right time to increase our presence in other parts of the country and we’re thrilled to have Caerphilly Garden Centre and Sunnydale Garden Centre come on board,” he added. “The two centres fit well with our geographical area and will strengthen our relationship with suppliers.”

The GWBG is a group of independent family-run garden centres who share best practice in buying and marketing. It is currently looking for more new members.

Phil Taylor, MD at Caerphilly Garden Centre and Sunnydale Garden Centre, said: “We are very pleased to have become part of such a prestigious and well organised buying group. A number of options were open to us but we felt that the Great Western Buying Group gave us the best fit for our centres.

“Combining our experience and skills in the market we feel that we can benefit from and positively contribute to its continued success.

“It is an exciting time for us, the group and suppliers alike, providing us all with real potential to do more business and build on and develop exciting and new relationships.”

Group members include Monkton Elm, Highfield Garden Centre in Gloucester, Exeter’s Bernaville Garden Centre, Plymouth Garden Centre, Castle Gardens in Sherborne, Dorset, Brimsmore Garden Centre in Yeovil and Poundbury Garden Centre, also in Dorset. Former members include Trelawney in Cornwall, which is now owned by the Blue Diamond group.

Klondyke strike deal with HSBC for refurbishment programme
The 24-centre Klondyke group is to bank exclusively with HSBC  after securing a five-year deal that will fund the redevelopment of five outlets...

The 24-centre Klondyke group is to bank exclusively with HSBC  after securing a five-year deal that will fund the redevelopment of five outlets.

The projects, expected to contribute to a projected group turnover increase to £50 million, include the planned re-build of Savilles at Leeds, the completion of an expansion at Stokesley, and refurbishments with new restaurants at Weavervale, Northwich and Polmont

CEO Bob Hewitt, who is retiring next year, said the support from HSBC would enable the group to fulfil its ambitions and invest funds back into the business.

He added: “Plants are our passion and we will always stay true to the quality of our products. However, we want to evolve Klondyke sites from traditional garden centres into social places for people to meet friends and family.”

He said Klondyke aimed to capitalise on recent successes that have led to strong turnover growth.

Doug Baikie, head of large corporate for HSBC in Scotland, said: “Klondyke Group’s model for growth has proved to be a success and we are very proud to be backing its plans for the future. Their sites are transforming into full-service retail operations but are still rooted in the company’s traditional passion for gardening.”

Gardens looking too good...are customers waiting for Christmas?

Are our customers running out of energy for gardening and garden centre shopping or just resting before the Christmas bonanza? Are our customers running out of energy for gardening and garden centre shopping or just resting before the Christmas bonanza?

It’s mid-September and usually by now general product sales are rising as Autumn gardening gets going but that does not appear to be happening this year – at least not according to volume sales data supplied for GTN Bestsellers. For the first time this year all of our GTN Bestsellers chart indexes are down year on year, and also down week on week.

Is it just because gardens are still looking so good after an excellent year for everything that grows? Have you all sold so many ‘looking good’ plants that are still performing, which means our customers just don’t want to switch into planting bulbs and pansies?

Even solar light sales are down year on year this week.

High sales volumes of pots, top soil, manure and onion sets indicate that the really keen gardeners are getting on with their gardening.  What we need is for the majority to get growing in the garden as soon as possible.

Perhaps the opening of Christmas displays over the coming weeks will help kick gardening sales back into action, as well as get the Christmas cash rolling into the tills.
When is your Christmas display opening?  Near to the GTN office, Baytree Garden Centre opened their displays last weekend and the grand opening at Van Hage Peterborough was yesterday (Friday).

Let us know when your Christmas opens, send us some photos and at the same time register your interest to be included in the judging for The Greatest Christmas Awards 2015.  E-mail trevor.pfeiffer@tgcmc.co.uk.  See the gallery below for pictures of Christmas at Whitehall Whitchurch that opened on September 12th where centre manager David Manning reports "Sales are on a par with last year so far with customers definitely in one of two camps, ones who don’t want to even acknowledge Christmas and those who think it's wonderful and are purchasing already."

GTN Bestsellers Top 50 sales volumes compared to the same week last year...
  • Garden Products - down 9%
  • Veg-2-Gro Products - down 1%
  • Growing Media - down 21%
  • All Items Index - down 8%

Further Autumn/Christmas Love The Plot You’ve Got Masterclasses

After the success of the Love The Plot You’ve Got Masterclasses that led to inspirational merchandising displays like this one at St Peters in the summer, more sessions have been arranged for this Autumn.

Last week a great day was had by all recently at Aylett’s, St Albans, at the Love The Plot You’ve Got Masterclasses. Delegates explored ideas for using the GIMB ‘Love The Plot You’ve Got’ message in the garden centre on the lead up to Christmas. The principles work just as well indoors as out – helping customers make the most of their space for relaxing and entertaining.

One of the excellent displays built during the day was a black and white themed display – built in just half an hour – using soothing plants for a conservatory setting.

Ian Boardman, who facilitated the day, said: “It was all about giving garden centre teams ideas to try back at their centres. There was so much enthusiasm in the room – I had to hold them back rather than spur them on! We even had delegates over from Ireland – they flew in especially for the Masterclass.”

Comments from delegates included:
“Very inspiring, motivating and informative”
“In depth, lots of ideas and suggestions”
“Facts that you can act on”
“A brilliant course”

Further Autumn/Christmas Love The Plot You’ve Got Masterclasses are being held at:
  • Glendoick, Scotland, Thursday 1st October
  • St Peters, Worcester, Tuesday 6th October
  • Coletta and Tyson, Beverley, Wednesday 7th October
To book your places or for more information email Ian Boardman at i.boardman@btinternet.com

PATS Telford opens its doors at 9am today (Sunday) with a record number of 200-plus exhibitors from the UK and overseas showcasing hundreds of new pet products and services.

“There is a tremendous buzz surrounding the show,” says organiser Annie Foord. “So much is happening at PATS Telford over both days of the exhibition, it really is a must-visit event for retailers and buyers. You won’t be disappointed.

“All the latest new product launches will be unveiled as well as great talks from some of the industry’s most respected names and demonstrations from the country’s top groomers.

“I can promise it will be great day out so make sure you still travel to Telford and attend the biggest pet trade show for years."

With so many exciting plans it could easily be a record-breaking year for attendance numbers as well.

On arrival at Telford International Centre, a large majority of visitors will head for the New Product Showcase, which will have a huge presence at the exhibition with more than 300 items being presented. All entries in the Showcase will be judged by a panel of retailer judges for the New Product Awards on the first morning of the show, and the results will be known and highlighted throughout the exhibition hall for the rest of the event.

As well as seeing an unrivalled array of new pet products and speaking to top suppliers and manufacturers, visitors will also be able to witness demonstrations from the country’s leading dog groomers and listen to talks from prominent industry figures.

Other PATS features aimed at making it a great day out include free entry, free catalogue, free tea and coffee, and free parking. Visitors still have time to register online at the PATS website www.patshow.co.uk.

A full and up-to-date list of exhibitors is available on the website together with information on how to reach both venues and regularly updated show news.

David Domoney teams up with John Lewis to launch bulb range

John Lewis has teamed up with TV gardener David Domoney to launch its first bulb and seed range.

The collection of spring-flowering bulbs and seed gift packets perfectly complements the John Lewis Partnership’s existing non-plant gardening range.

Eighteen hand-picked bulb sets go on sale at www.johnlewis.com from later this month [SEPT], while three specially-selected seed mixtures themed for bees, birds and butterflies join them on sale in October.

In a stunning combination of colours and varieties, the bulb collections will bring borders, pots and containers bursting into life.

An ideal gift for the gardener in your life, or a treat to brighten up your own plot, the new range promises to bring some sunshine into your life with show-stopping flowers.

David Domoney is a TV gardener and multi-medal winning garden designer, creating show gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show and Hampton Court Palace.

He presents ITV1’s Love Your Garden alongside Alan Titchmarsh and is the resident garden expert on ITV1’s This Morning programme.

David says: “I have hand-picked these bulb collections specially to help people achieve award-winning, flower show-style results in their own gardens.

“David removed the hassle of mixing and matching individual bulbs by choosing the best single-varieties and companion plants for a great combination of colour, height and shape.

“These stunning combinations will bring panache, elegance and class to your garden – all from the same packet and flowering at the same time for a magnificent effect.”

John Lewis / David Domoney bulb collections include:

  • The ‘Take a Stroll’ collection containing 30 tulip bulbs in four brilliant shades (pink, white, mauve and black/purple) and the vibrant stripe variety ‘Hotpants’, combined with ten anemones in striking royal blue.
  • The ‘Amaryllis Christmas Gift Set’ which promises masses of glorious foliage, delicate scent and dramatic trumpet-like flowers with one brilliant Amaryllis Hippeastrum bulb.
  • The ‘White Passion’ collection, chosen to represent the most vibrant pure whites of the daffodil world and containing 30 super bulbs from spectacular ‘White Lion’ to ‘Mount Hood’ and ‘Ice Follies’, each certain to stop spectators in their tracks.

David has also designed gift ranges for Christmas horticulture including, wildlife-friendly collections of flower seeds specially-designed to attract and help butterflies, birds and bees.

John Lewis / David Domoney seed mixture sets include:

  • The ‘Bee Garden Seed Mix’ containing 30 nectar-rich flower varieties designed to add colour and form to your garden – plus provide food for your local bee population. Includes seeds, soil and maize granules for instant sowing.
  • The ‘Bird Garden Seed Mix’ containing 20 varieties aimed at attracting wild birds into your garden by offering readily-accessible food throughout the summer and autumn months. Includes seeds, soil and maize granules for instant sowing.

David adds: “Bees and butterflies are important pollinators in the garden and attracting them couldn’t be easier with my specially-selected seed mixtures. Sow them in your borders or beds in the autumn and by spring you’ll have the beginnings of a stunning insect-friendly display.”

All the ranges will go on sale on the John Lewis website www.johnlewis.com 1st week of October.

Primary school's eco-warriors victorious in Stewart Garden Schools programme

Warren Road Primary School is the winner of the Stewart Garden Schools programme 2015. The school, based in Orpington, Greater London, will receive £1,000 to spend at its local garden centre.

Created and run by Stewart Garden, the gardening division of UK manufacturer, Stewart Group Holdings, the programme was open to school pupils aged 6-11 years. It challenged schools to be creative with Stewart Garden products.

Warren Road Primary School impressed the judges with the way the programme was incorporated into the curriculum and how Stewart Garden products were used, such as the 22cm Kitchen Garden Propagator sets and premium seed tray. Activities for the programme were done through Warren Road Primary School’s Eco Club, which is enjoyed by students from reception to year six.

The students first weeded existing beds for seedlings, before demonstrating great initiative by hanging CDs and pots over the plants to frighten birds away from their produce.

At the end of the programme, Warren Road Primary School produced courgettes, potatoes, parsley, carrots, onions, tomatoes and other great produce. The students planted herbs and flowers with their vegetables to make colourful beddings and keep away pests.

Throughout the competition, Warren Road Primary School installed Stewart Garden water butts to collect and reuse rainwater and their Composter’s for organic fertiliser.

Christine Millband, sustainability subject leader at Warren Road Primary School, commented: “Everyone at Warren Road Primary School is ecstatic to win the Stewart Garden Schools programme 2015. Students from reception to year six were all involved in the project and their enthusiasm to grow was inspiring. Throughout the programme we wanted the students to make the key decisions, from which produce to grow to how much they should be sold for. With the £1,000 to spend at our local garden centre, we want to continue this. The students will decide how the money is spent to sustain the fantastic work they have already done. The Stewart Garden Schools 2015 programme has taught our students so many valuable lessons about growing your own produce that will last a lifetime.”

Congratulating the worthy winner, Andy Burns, managing director at Stewart Garden said: “Everyone at Stewart Garden would like to congratulate Warren Road Primary School. Great skills and real innovation made its entry standout. Warren Road Primary School has instilled an important understanding of growing your own produce among its students. Hopefully, this will last a lifetime.”

Nine runners up in the Stewart Garden Schools programme 2015 will each receive £100 to spend at their local garden centre. In alphabetical order, these are:
  • Balgowan Primary School, Beckenham, Kent
  • Holmes Chapel Primary School, Crewe, Cheshire East
  • Lough View Integrated Primary School, Church Road, Belfast
  • Mowmacre Hill Primary School, Tedworth Green, Leicester
  • Stafford Preparatory School, Burton Manor, Stafford
  • The Weatheralls Primary School, Soham, Cambridgeshire
  • The Topsham School, Topsham, Devon
  • Vale First Middle School, Worthing, West Sussex
  • Whitehorse Manor Infant School, Whitehorse Road, Thornton Heath
Burns continued: “We’d also like to say a big thank you to all the other schools who entered the Stewart Garden Schools programme 2015. This year we saw an incredibly high standard of entries. Every entry embodied the concepts the programme sets out to promote.”

Each of the participating schools across the UK received kits, which equipped them to start growing their own fruit and vegetables. Worth more than £400, the kits included:
  • premium seed tray
  • two 22cm Kitchen Garden Propagator sets
  • plastic plant pots
  • 70cm Corinthian Trough
  • 5 litre watering cans
  • three varieties of easy-grow vegetable seeds from Pippa Greenwood’s range
  • compost donated by participating garden centres and professional grower’s specialist, J Arthur Bowers
  • promotional materials and an informative booklet produced by Stewart Garden
Almost 200 schools across the UK, from the Isle of Wight to Stirling, have participated in the Stewart Garden Schools Campaign since 2013. In 2014, Bradley Barton Primary School took first prize with its Wizard of Oz inspired garden.

Stewart Garden engages with people and customers through its love of gardening, strong heritage and trust. A successful UK manufacturer for 70 years, the company operates from a new state-of-the-art facility in Banbury, using the latest production techniques and quality systems.

The Stewart Garden Schools programme is taking place for a fourth consecutive year in 2016. Schools interested in participating are encouraged to keep checking the Stewart Garden website, www.stewart-garden.co.uk, Twitter, @StewartGarden, and Facebook, www.facebook.com/StewartCompany, for more information.

Gardman’s bold approach to innovation delights Glee buyers
Buyers at Glee responded with enthusiasm to Gardman’s new-look 2016 offer, with special acclaim for its commitment to continuous product innovation across many categories...

Buyers at Glee responded with enthusiasm to Gardman’s new-look 2016 offer, with special acclaim for its commitment to continuous product innovation across many categories.

Many potential best-sellers were identified amongst more than 400 introductions across the full range of 2,800-plus SKUs.  The established categories for core gardening were further boosted with an increase of over 300 extra new products.

Gardman’s radical five-brand strategy, introduced last season, also continues to offer retailers an effective means of encouraging increased basket spend by trading customers up to better-quality products; key unveilings for 2016 included:

Moulton Mill ‘Budding Gardeners’: a new range of top quality lightweight garden tools for children and aspiring gardeners. The range endorsed by the Rich Brothers, RHS Chelsea Flower Show’s youngest Gold Medal winners, encourages family-time spent gardening via its ethos ‘for families that grow together’.

Blacksmith: To further strengthen this brand’s offering, Gardman have worked closely with UK craftsmen to design a beautiful collection of arches, obelisks and ‘romantic’ heart-shaped plant supports. Made from heavy duty wrought iron, this new hand forged range boasts the same impressive 5 year guarantee as its existing hanging garden range.

Garden & Home Co: a new range of four stylish themed homestyle collections, character doorstops, artificial pot plants and topiary, offer retailers seasonal and year-round gifting opportunities at affordable price points.

Cole & Bright: new ‘dual-power’ string lights, that guarantee year-round lighting, whatever the weather were unveiled at the show, together with a range of wooden flameless candle lanterns, that are suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

Ernest Charles: two charming new nest boxes have been introduced to complement its existing range of finest quality wild bird care seed blends and bird tables. This tactical product development not only strengthens the brand further but, also offers retailers and consumers a wider choice across the range.

Wyevale Nurseries roots for ‘The Great British Hedge’
Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford is campaigning for the benefits of ‘The Great British Hedge’ from this month onwards...

Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford is campaigning for the benefits of ‘The Great British Hedge’ from this month onwards.

It has started an initiative to promote the benefits of the British hedge to the horticultural retail and amenity and landscaping sectors.

Adam Dunnett, Sales and Marketing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “Hedges are natures fences – natural boundary markers, privacy givers and security providers. Not only do they work for us, they also make a living corridor for birds and animals, offering nesting and food throughout the year.

“Hedges have been used as field boundaries in England since the times of the Romans and we feel Britain and its patchwork of hedges are iconic. We want to see them continue to flourish.

“There are many benefits to hedges for example walls or a fence will only divert wind, whereas a hedge filters and calms it, improving air circulation and forming sheltered microclimates for other plants to grow. Hedges can also be planted for sound proofing and to absorb air pollution. They are ideal for use near busy roads or in industrial areas.

“The best hedges are planned. Knowing what to plant and where to put it can make a significant difference to the initial impact as well as the desired long-term appearance.”

Wyevale Nurseries say whatever the circumstances, be it a hedge in rural land, a town house or rooftop garden, there are options which will provide the best result. People need to choose the right plant, for the right place, with the right maintenance regime and staff at Wyevale Nurseries are happy to offer guidance.

Adam continued: “Planning and planting a hedge can be a daunting prospect for the average gardener. For retailers we have put together a comprehensive range of varieties, available in both three litre and five litre pots, giving them all they need to build a fantastic hedging offering right through the autumn and winter.

“Each plant is supplied with extra large, fully informative picture labels and support with a giant correx board classifying each product line by its characteristics. By following our simple classification chart retail customers will be able to select the variety which best suits their needs.

“For amenity and landscaping customers we offer hedging supplied in three ways – bareroot, rootball and container grown. Each method of supply has certain seasonal limitations. We are one of the only UK suppliers to offer ‘All Year Round’ availability on hedging.”

Wyevale Nurseries is also developing more ‘Specialist Hedging Forms’ – Pleached and Pre-formed. Pre-formed hedges are plants that have been intensively pruned and trimmed into shape to give an instant desired effect of a finished hedge.

Pleached trees is a technique of pruning that produces a flat frame creating a two-dimensional effect with branches spreading sideways in one plane (i.e. flat) held on top of a central tree stem. These are commonly used to create a green screen above a fence level or a raised wall.

Wyevale Nurseries is one of the largest family-run wholesale nurseries in the UK. It was established in 1930 by Harry Williamson, a horticulturist and entrepreneur. It became the company it is today under the leadership of his son, Peter, who sadly passed away in 2011.

The Williamsons’ saw the opportunity to sell their product to an undeveloped retail market, creating one of the first garden centres, followed by a chain. In 1987, the retail side needed to expand and the 19 garden centres were sold as a PLC.

The family then turned its focus to Wyevale Nurseries Ltd. It continues to be a family-run business with ownership and joint chairmanship currently being held by the third generation, Heather and Simeon Williamson, with plans for the fourth generation to takeover in the future.

Wyevale Nurseries has a significant product range and is regularly introducing new plants. It offers a large variety of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants to garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners.

Taking place at Chesford Grange, Warwickshire on Tuesday 10 November, the HTA is excited to announce its first HTA Marketing Forum.

The marketing forum is for all those involved in marketing and public relations in the garden industry, keynote speakers will include Tim Mason, renowned for launching Tesco’s Clubcard scheme, Tesco Express, Tesco.com and Tesco Personal Finance, and Gerald Ratner, former CEO of Ratners Group (now the Signet Group).

With competing interests on consumer time and cash at an all-time high, it is ever more important to ensure your business is promoting itself to its full potential. However, few businesses across the garden sector have huge marketing budgets allowing them to run extensive promotional campaigns.

In this one-day event, we take inspiration from inside and outside the industry to provide examples and case studies on getting the most out of your marketing budget. The programme includes keynote presentations, bite sized sessions on topics including loyalty schemes, TV commercials and in-store videos and using consumer segmentation and examples from the industry of innovative ways of attracting new customers on a year round basis.

Aimed at garden industry professionals, both experienced and new to marketing and promotions, the programme is designed to ensure that attendees leave with top tips and examples of the best use of new and trusted marketing methods that will bring in new customers and retain existing ones.

There will be the opportunity for networking throughout the day with delegates, speakers and exhibition partners.
