Greenkey Garden & Home is delighted to unveil its bold new 2027 outdoor living decorative collection, featuring over 40 brand-new lines designed to elevate garden spaces with atmosphere, artistry, and long-lasting quality. This major launch marks one of Greenkey’s most expansive decorative introductions to date, offering retailers a fresh, high-impact selection for the season ahead.

Sculptural Serenity for Modern Gardens

The centrepiece of the 2027 launch is the striking expansion of the Luxe Living brand adding a new category - Water Features. Greenkey are introducing nine beautifully designed features that blend sculptural form with immersive lighting.

Each water feature pairs elegant, contemporary shapes with LED illumination, creating a captivating fountain effect enhanced by wildlife and floral light patterns that reflect and shimmer across the flowing water. The result is an irresistibly enchanting focal point that transforms patios, courtyards and garden corners into calm, atmospheric retreats.

Fully self-contained and easy to install, every Luxe Living feature is crafted for effortless enjoyment. With an IP44 rating, the range is built for reliable outdoor use, delivering a beautiful, illuminated presence that enhances the garden both day and night.

Vintage Inspired Charm

Complementing the Luxe Living launch is Greenkey’s new Cast Iron Decorative Garden Collection. This range is built around a simple idea: bringing the charm of traditional metalwork back into modern gardens. Every piece is hand crafted in cast iron, giving it that unmistakable weight, texture, and authenticity that only true craftsmanship can offer. Designed to weather beautifully and last season after season, the range celebrates outdoor living with characterful details and old-world artistry.

The collection unfolds like a curated family of decorative accents, each one adding personality and purpose to the garden. In the range are cast iron animal figurines, decorative hooks, garden stakes, decorative wall compasses and practical items such as thermometers, rain gauges and string holders.

To suit different outdoor aesthetics, the collection is available in two distinctive finishes - antique bronze for a rich, heritage feel, and traditional brown for a warm, rustic look. Every piece is protected with a weather resistant coating and built with durable, long lasting construction, ensuring it stands proudly in the garden year after year.

This is a collection designed not just to decorate, but to enrich the garden with stories, textures, and moments of delight.

Oak category shows considerable potential
GTN Xtra Promotion

As garden centres continue to develop their home and lifestyle offer,  Papaya Trading believes oak represents a category with considerable potential...

For garden centres, the boundaries between outdoor living, home, gifting and lifestyle have become increasingly blurred. Customers are not necessarily shopping in neat categories anymore; they are looking for products that fit the way they want their homes and spaces to feel. For Papaya Trading, that creates an interesting opportunity for oak furniture. As garden centres continue to develop their home and lifestyle offer, we believe oak represents a category with considerable potential.

Oak is a category customers already understand. It is familiar, dependable and versatile enough to sit comfortably across a wide range of interiors. But familiarity does not have to mean predictable.

Our approach is to take those qualities and build furniture collections around what works commercially for retailers today: considered designs, usable proportions, coordinated pieces and enough variety to create choice without making the range unnecessarily complicated.

It means looking beyond simply producing another dining table, sideboard or occasional piece and considering the role each product plays when it reaches the shop floor.

Some pieces need to create impact. Others need to be dependable everyday sellers. Some earn their place through storage or practicality, while smaller complementary products can give customers an easy way into a collection and encourage additional purchases.

Together, those products should form a range that feels coherent rather than crowded.

For garden centres in particular, that matters.

Floor space is rarely static. Departments expand and contract throughout the year, seasonal areas change and retailers continually reassess how different parts of the store can work harder. Indoor furniture therefore needs to be flexible enough to work within that environment rather than demanding an entirely new retail model around it.

A carefully selected dining group, sideboard or occasional furniture display can introduce an oak collection without requiring every item in the range to be physically represented.

The wider story can then be carried through imagery, product information and knowledgeable sales teams, allowing retailers to build a meaningful furniture offer around the space and customer they already have.

It is a different way of thinking about furniture retail: the showroom becomes a window into the collection rather than a catalogue of everything available.

That principle sits behind the way we develop our oak furniture at Papaya Trading.

We want our collections to give retailers options. Pieces can work individually, together as a coordinated range, or as part of a smaller edited display. Retailers can choose what feels right for their customer, their available floor space and the type of furniture business they want to build.

Clear differences between products make ranges easier for sales teams to understand and easier for customers to navigate. Rather than asking shoppers to choose between numerous versions of essentially the same piece, the aim is to give each product a reason to be there.

For us, that is where a strong oak collection begins.

Not with how many products can be added to a range, but with how well those products work together on the shop floor, in the customer’s home and, importantly, for the retailer selling them.

The opportunity is to approach it with the same thought already applied so successfully elsewhere in the store: choose well, merchandise confidently and make every piece earn its space.

Diddly Squat Farm and Blue Diamond Garden Centres unveil new and exclusive garden gifting collection

Blue Diamond Garden Centres and Diddly Squat Farm are continuing their exclusive three-year partnership with the launch of a new and exclusive co-produced garden gifting collection, arriving just in time for Christmas...

Blue Diamond Garden Centres and Diddly Squat Farm are continuing their exclusive three-year partnership with the launch of a new and exclusive co-produced garden gifting collection, arriving just in time for Christmas.

Launching from 1 October 2026, the new collection will be available across Blue Diamond Garden Centres, Diddly Squat Farm Shops and online, bringing together a range of new and exclusive garden gifts created through the collaboration between Blue Diamond’s horticultural expertise and Diddly Squat Farm’s distinctive character and connection to British farming.

From seeds and bulbs to bird food, growing products and garden gifts, the range has been designed for gardeners, growers, Diddly Squat fans and anyone looking for something a little different this Christmas.

The collection brings together practical, innovative and giftable products that can be grown, planted, enjoyed and used in the garden – with plenty of Diddly Squat humour along the way.

Designed not to take itself too seriously, the range offers a different take on Christmas gifting, with something for those who enjoy getting outside, growing things and making the most of the great outdoors.

Look out for the wildflower Seedy Balls, available in three varieties, and the Fruit & Nut Bar, inspired by Jeremy’s love of British birds – made just for birds and complete with a bespoke feeder.

The award-winning Diddly Squat Farm Plantable Garden Planner combines gardening hints and tips, a gardener’s logbook and Luna calendar, plus the all-important question: “What’s your herb birthday?”

For some Christmas fun, the Diddly Squat Farm 12 Days of Christmas Flower Seed Calendar reveals a surprise each day, with the chance to win prizes by entering and singing the Diddly Squat Farm version of the 12 Days of Christmas song!

For those who missed out earlier in the year, the new and exclusive Diddly Squat Farm Rosé Rose, bred by renowned rose breeder Rosen Tantau  and launched at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026, will be back on sale.

Whether it’s encouraging someone to grow their own, attracting more birds into the garden or simply finding a suitably Diddly Squat way to give a gardening gift, the range celebrates the simple pleasures of getting outside and getting stuck in.

Alan Roper, CEO of Blue Diamond Garden Centres, said: “Following the success of the Diddly Squat Farm Rosé Rose, we are now launching an innovative and exclusive collection of garden gifts, just in time for Christmas.

"The products are practical, unique and have a clear connection to gardening and the countryside. We expect they will appeal to both gardeners and Diddly Squat fans looking for something a little different this Christmas and I am sure these products will appear under many of the nation’s Christmas trees this year.”

Lisa Hogan, Co-Founder of Diddly Squat Farm Shop, said: “We have really enjoyed working with Blue Diamond to bring this next collection to life. There is something rather satisfying about creating Christmas presents that can actually be grown, planted or used in the garden. We hope the range brings a bit of fun to Christmas shopping and, of course, a bit of Diddly Squat to gardens across the country.”

The collaboration brings together two very different British businesses with a shared passion for the countryside, growing and the great outdoors, combining Blue Diamond’s horticultural knowledge and commitment to quality with Diddly Squat Farm’s distinctive personality and authentic connection to British farming.

And with Christmas just around the corner, there is plenty of time to find a bit of Diddly Squat for the garden – and perhaps under the Christmas tree too.

Multi-award-winning SealStop stars in the Dragons' Den

The inventors of SealStop, the multi-award-winning Yorkshire water-saving device, have appeared on the hit BBC One programme Dragons’ Den. The inventors of SealStop, the multi-award-winning Yorkshire water-saving device, have appeared on the hit BBC One programme Dragons’ Den. Although the brand didn’t win an investment from a Dragon, it has since secured a ‘game-changing’ grant of £60,000 from a Great Ideas innovation programme.

Pocklington-based Jason and Belle Richardson, who created SealStop in 2024, pitched for investment in the Dragons’ Den for their pioneering SealStop, the ground-breaking automatic shut-off valve designed to eliminate water waste and save gardeners’ time.

SealStop, which is now sold across six countries across the world, has won 12 major awards during the past two years, including recognition for sustainability and innovation.

The episode aired on Thursday August 27 at 8pm on BBC One and is available to view on BBC iPlayer. Click here to view.

During the episode, Jason and Belle pitched to Deborah Meaden, Peter Jones, Touker Suleyman and Steven Bartlett, as well as footballing legend Gary Neville.

Belle Richardson commented: “We are so thrilled to have been featured in this series. It’s such an honour and a privilege and we cannot wait for the episode to air. What started as one of those everyday frustrations on our smallholding has completely changed our lives.

“We never imagined it would lead us to building an award-winning business together and standing in front of the Dragons. We're incredibly proud of how far we've come in such a short space of time, and we hope our journey inspires others to back their ideas and just give it a go.

“Our appearance on national television comes after an exceptional period of growth. Apart from the awards we have won, we have expanded into international markets; we are recognised as one of Yorkshire's fastest-rising startups; we are proud to be standard bearers for British manufacturing; and our mission to help people waste less water through simple innovation is gaining real traction.

“Saving water has never been so important. It has been predicted that, by 2050, there will be a five billion litre water shortfall daily in the UK. Meanwhile the Government, realising this potential water crisis, has set a 20 per cent reduction target for household water use,” added Belle.

However, SealStop has now won a grant of £60,000 as part of Great Ideas innovation programme under the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire's Business Innovation Fund Business Innovation Fund.

Eligible local businesses pitched investment-ready projects to secure up to £60,000 to implement their ideas – and SealStop triumphed.

Belle commented: “This is game-changing for us. I’m still processing the fact we’ve won. It seems unreal, pitching our ideas against some of the brightest young businesses in Yorkshire and being filmed by the BBC’s One Show.”

LOHAS Fertiliser wins 2026 GIMA Innovators Seed Corn Fund

Steep & Sprout, an innovative Shropshire-made plant tea from LOHAS Fertiliser, has been named the winner of the 2026 GIMA Innovators Seed Corn Fund, securing a package of funding and industry support designed to accelerate the product’s journey into the garden retail market. The winner was officially unveiled on the first day at Glee...

The winner was officially unveiled on the first day at Glee.

Taking a fresh approach to plant feeding, Steep & Sprout combines organically derived nutrients from domestically produced resources, such as poultry manure with LOHAS Fertiliser’s proprietary patented enzyme technology, delivered through a simple 100% biodegradable and compostable ‘tea bag’ format.

The system is designed to make feeding plants straightforward for gardeners whilst tackling some much bigger environmental challenges. Its biological formulation helps stabilise organic nutrients and supports more efficient natural nutrient uptake by plants, reducing the rapid leaching and run-off associated with some conventional feeding methods.

Made in Shropshire within the Severn catchment, Steep & Sprout combines local production with a strong environmental focus, helping plants access nutrients efficiently while reducing the potential for nutrient loss into surrounding waterways.

Retailing at £7.99, the product has been developed as an accessible and easy-to-understand alternative to traditional liquid plant feeds. Gardeners simply steep the product to create a nutrient-rich plant tea, with the compostable delivery system helping to eliminate the packaging and product waste traditionally associated with plant feeding.

Talking about the win, Lian Lin, Co-Founder of LOHAS Fertiliser, said: "We are absolutely thrilled to win the 2026 GIMA Innovators Seed Corn Fund. Our goal with Steep & Sprout was simple: create an effective, zero-waste plant food that simplifies plant care for everyday gardeners while actively protecting our waterways. We are excited to work alongside GIMA to bring this Shropshire-made innovation to garden centres across the UK.

Backing the next generation of garden innovation

The GIMA Innovators Seed Corn Fund was created to identify and support the next generation of garden industry innovation, helping emerging businesses and new product concepts overcome some of the barriers associated with bringing an idea successfully to market.

Steep & Sprout impressed the judging panel with the way it brings together product innovation, commercial potential and sustainability within one highly accessible consumer proposition.

Martin Ward, Director of GIMA, said: “Steep & Sprout really caught the judges’ attention because it takes something familiar - feeding plants - and completely rethinks how it can be done. It is simple for the consumer to understand and can easily be adopted into consumer regular habits of brewing a tea for themselves and for their beloved plants.

“What also impressed us was the commercial potential. LOHAS Fertiliser has created a product that feels relevant to the way people want to garden today, is easy to use, lower waste and with sustainability built into the proposition rather than added as an afterthought. That combination of innovation, usability and retail opportunity is exactly what the GIMA Innovators Seed Corn Fund was created to support.”

Support to accelerate growth

As the latest recipient of the GIMA Innovators Seed Corn Fund, LOHAS Fertiliser will receive an extensive package of support to help fast-track the next stage of its development.

The prize includes free exhibition space at Glee, the UK’s leading garden retail trade show, together with up to £4,000 of tailored support which can be used across areas including design, development, consultancy, manufacturing or marketing.

LOHAS Fertiliser will also benefit from a free half-page advertisement in the GIMA New Product Digest, twelve months of complimentary GIMA membership, one year’s ACID (Anti Copying in Design) membership and ongoing PR support.

For LOHAS Fertiliser, the award represents an opportunity not simply to build awareness of Steep & Sprout, but to demonstrate how a new generation of plant nutrition products can combine strong commercial potential with a more circular and environmentally responsible approach.

HEX Living Golf Day raises £6,600 for A Child of Mine

An impressive £6,600 was raised for charity when HEX Living welcomed customers, suppliers and industry partners to its annual Charity Golf Day at the prestigious JCB Golf & Country Club...

An impressive £6,600 was raised for charity when HEX Living welcomed customers, suppliers and industry partners to its annual Charity Golf Day at the prestigious JCB Golf & Country Club.

The event brought together 40 golfers for a day of friendly competition on one of the UK's most acclaimed championship courses, with all proceeds going to A Child of Mine, supporting the charity's vital work helping families affected by the death of a baby or child.

Played under sunny skies, participants enjoyed ideal golfing conditions for much of the day before strong winds made an appearance, adding an extra layer of difficulty as players reached the famous 17th hole, renowned for testing even the most confident golfers.

Competition on the course was fierce, but it was HEX Living Operations Director Neal Lafford who ultimately emerged as the overall winner – for the second time since the company launched its charity golf day events.

Following the golf, guests gathered for an evening BBQ-style, and a charity auction. Auction prizes included a Porsche driving experience and private tuition at Eaton Hall Shooting Ground, with attendees showing tremendous generosity throughout the evening.

Paul Clews, Managing Director at HEX Living, said: "Our Charity Golf Day has become one of the highlights of the year, bringing together customers, suppliers and friends of the business for a fantastic cause. Raising £6,600 for A Child of Mine is a brilliant achievement and we're incredibly grateful to everyone who took part, donated prizes and supported the event. Events like this demonstrate what can be achieved when our team, customers, suppliers and partners come together behind a shared cause, and we're already looking forward to doing it all again next year."

Gayle Routledge, Founder of A Child of Mine, added: “We are incredibly grateful for the continued support shown by HEX Living and everyone who took part in this year's Golf Day. The funds raised will help us continue providing vital bereavement support, guidance and practical help to families facing the devastating loss of a child. It was wonderful to see so many people come together to support our cause and help make a real difference.”

Autumn Budget must recognise 'green growth' businesses

The HTA says stronger support for the sector would boost economic and social resilience, green infrastructure and investment, while warning that its member businesses need immediate relief from rising costs if they are to grow...

Following John Healey MP’s first major speech since becoming Chancellor of the Exchequer, in which he pledged to “draw a line” under rising business costs and put growth at the centre of the Autumn Budget on 28 October, the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) is calling on him to ensure environmental horticulture is recognised as a sector that can help deliver that growth.

The HTA says stronger support for the sector would boost economic and social resilience, green infrastructure and investment, while warning that its member businesses need immediate relief from rising costs if they are to grow.

Environmental horticulture contributes £38 billion to UK GDP, generates nearly £8.4 billion in tax revenues and supports 722,000 jobs. But the HTA says businesses are being held back from investing, with employer National Insurance Contributions (NICs) and the National Living Wage alone adding an estimated £134 million a year to industry costs, alongside rising energy bills, business rates and regulatory pressures.

The Association welcomed the Chancellor's recognition that businesses are facing increasing costs from labour, energy, regulation and planning, but says the Autumn Budget must now translate that acknowledgement into practical measures that unlock investment and job creation across sectors, including environmental horticulture.

Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the HTA, said: “The question for this Budget is not simply what the government can give to horticulture. It is what horticulture can deliver for the country if the government creates the conditions for businesses to invest, employ people and grow.

“Environmental horticulture helps cool our towns and cities, manage flood risk, support healthier communities and create places where people want to live, work and invest. Recognising green infrastructure as critical infrastructure is not just good for our sector; it is an investment in economic resilience, public health and long-term growth.

“Environmental horticulture is a sector ready to invest in people, technology, UK production and climate resilience, but businesses cannot do that while they are facing another layer of costs and uncertainty. An additional £134 million a year in employment costs, alongside rising business rates, energy costs and regulatory pressures, means money that could be creating jobs, building skills and driving innovation is instead being absorbed by the cost of doing business.

“The Chancellor has an opportunity to change that. We need a Budget that backs investment, not just consumption, and gives businesses the confidence to grow. If businesses can invest, the benefits reach far beyond horticulture.”

The HTA’s submission calls for action in three key areas.

Reduce financial and regulatory barriers undermining UK businesses’ ability to invest and grow

The HTA is calling for the Autumn Budget to match the Chancellor's commitment to reducing the cost of doing business by reversing the increase in employer NICs, accelerating Business Rates reform and carrying out an immediate post-implementation review of the Employment Rights Act, including day-one Statutory Sick Pay.

The Association is also highlighting the role environmental horticulture can play in tackling youth unemployment and supporting young people not in education, employment or training (NEETs). The sector offers accessible, practical and flexible entry-level roles, from seasonal work through to apprenticeships.

But rising employment costs and regulatory pressures risk making businesses more cautious about hiring. The HTA is therefore calling for the employer NIC threshold to be increased to £6,000 and for the differentiated National Living Wage for younger workers to be maintained.

It is also seeking greater access to finance and R&D support for UK growers to invest in automation, irrigation robotics and AI, alongside changes to ensure businesses can effectively benefit from the Growth and Skills Levy.

Recognise that improvements to climate resilience, infrastructure, and health and community outcomes boost productivity and growth

The HTA wants a cross-government taskforce established to recognise how environmental horticulture can contribute to economic growth, climate adaptation and community health.

It is also calling for a long-term water resilience strategy focused on capturing and storing water during wetter months. Growers and garden centres account for just 0.2% of total UK water consumption, yet face repeated restrictions in the ever-increasing hot, dry summers that can undermine their ability to supply and maintain green infrastructure.

The submission also calls for government funding for therapeutic horticulture pilots across the UK. Green spaces were estimated to save the NHS £111 million a year in 2018, equivalent to £148 million in 2026 prices, in reduced GP visits alone. A Trellis pilot in East Lothian recorded a 67% reduction in GP appointments three months after the programme ended.

The HTA references research estimating that the UK economy will suffer at least £4.4 billion in lost productivity due to successive heatwaves from May to the end of July 2026. If green design and maintenance practices are integrated into planning from the beginning and incorporated into new housing and public spaces, the immediate benefits, such as improved cooling, better air quality, and increased property values, will result. This, in turn, will encourage more consumer spending as homeowners tap into their equity for investments or other purchases, leading to higher tax revenues and lowering the costs associated with retrofitting.

Deliver a UK-EU SPS Agreement with easements as soon as possible

The HTA also emphasises the importance of delivering a UK-EU Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) agreement as soon as possible and ensuring it is properly resourced for implementation.

79% of UK growers rely on plant imports, with 99% of those imports coming from the EU, making efficient trade essential to maintaining reliable supplies of plants and trees.

The HTA is calling for the UK-EU Summit to be rescheduled as soon as possible, alongside adequate resourcing across relevant DEFRA departments to ensure new systems and processes are fully digitised and do not create additional burdens for businesses. In addition, the HTA calls on the government to work in partnership with the sector to ensure that supply chains can be restored quickly and effectively.

The Association is also urging government to work with DEFRA and DAERA to support the trade of plants between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, where businesses continue to face additional costs, delays and supply constraints.

Meadow View celebrates Glee award win

Meadow View is celebrating a standout Glee 2026 after its new Elementa Water Features range won the GLEE New Product Award for Garden Decoration.

Launched at the show for the 2027 season, Elementa marks Meadow View’s expansion into the water feature category and attracted strong interest from garden centre buyers throughout the event.

The range has been developed specifically for garden centre retail, combining contemporary design with a point of difference not currently offered by competing water feature ranges. Selected designs allow consumers to incorporate planting directly into the feature, bringing together water, light and planting to create a more personalised and integrated addition to the garden.

Sarah Hill, Managing Director at Meadow View, said: “Elementa is a completely new category for Meadow View, so the response at Glee was incredibly important to us.

We wanted to introduce something that offered retailers a genuine point of difference, with the ability to incorporate planting giving customers greater scope to personalise the product and integrate it into their garden.

"Winning the Glee New Product Award was a brilliant endorsement of the concept, and the response from buyers has given us real confidence as we move into the 2027 season.”

Elementa joins Meadow View’s existing portfolio of decorative aggregates, paving and complementary landscaping products supplied exclusively to the garden centre sector and will be available to garden centre stockists for the 2027 season.

The new Dahlia Collection has been designed and in conjunction with National Garden Scheme for their centenary in 2027 and launched at Glee 2026.

For 100 years the National Garden Scheme has inspired people through beautiful gardens, passionate gardeners and memorable days out. With more than 3,300 private gardens opening each year and over £78 million raised for nursing and health charities since 1927, the National Garden Scheme is a trusted and much-loved brand with a unique purpose. As NGS approach their centenary in 2027, they’re bringing that inspiration into garden centres and retail spaces with the National Garden Scheme Centenary Collection, an exclusive range of plants, garden products and gifts. This is an opportunity for retailers to partner with a brand that combines heritage, trust and charitable impact, while attracting new customers and being part of a nationwide celebration of gardens, generosity and community.

Anna Wili, Head of Marketing for the National Garden Scheme says, "I was delighted to see Taylor’s Bulbs win the National Garden Scheme Centenary Product of the Year Award at GLEE . It has been a joy to partner with them as part of our centenary celebrations. Their beautiful Dahlia Collection and their generous commitment to donate £2 from every pack sold to the National Garden Scheme is greatly appreciated. We couldn't be more pleased to see their contribution recognised in this way, and we offer them our heartfelt congratulations."

Each pack contains 4 tubers including the varieties 1 x Bishop of York (dark foliage, perfect for pollinators), 2 x Bocherell (spherical shaped flowers) and 1 x Honka Yellow (distinctive shaped flowers, perfect for pollinators).

£2 from every sale will be donated to the National Garden Scheme.

The National Garden Scheme Dahlia Collection will be available in garden retailers from late January 2027.

Hat-trick of Glee for Monty Miracle

Monty Miracle has enjoyed its third Glee with a larger presence over two stand locations, high profile accolades and increased merchandising and sales support.

The team was happy to share its huge success in the 12 months since last year’s event. Thanks to the high standard and ever-increasing popularity of its product and accessories range, it has won a Which? Best Buy award - with a rare 100% score - and been named Good Housekeeping Institute’s Best Overall patio cleaner 2026.

On the main Monty Miracle stand was the core Outdoor Cleaner in a range of sizes, Artificial Grass Cleaner and a full range of accessories, and the company's upselling accessories opportunities and  standout merchandising. The team were also delighted to take space on the Decco central stand and discuss opportunities with clients there.

“A great show as ever,” said Director Peter Beaumont. "We first launched at GLEE just three years ago and since then things have really taken off. We are selling hugely well in stores and merchants throughout the UK as well as on TikTok and on our own dedicated e-commerce channel. With backing from Which? and the Good Housekeeping Institute, we were able to use this year’s event to show how we can support our customers even more with in-store support and a fully funded marketing programme. It was a great show.”

British Garden Centres marks five years of the Family Card with a major group-wide upgrade

British Garden Centres is celebrating the 5th anniversary of its Family Card by rolling out a major update across all 80 of its garden centres. The milestone is being marked with a new array of customer perks, digital upgrades, and a celebratory launch weekend to drive loyalty and engagement across the group.

Celebrating five years with new customer perks: To thank shoppers for five years of support, the UK’s largest family-owned garden centre group is kicking off the celebrations with an anniversary weekend on 12th–13th September, offering members an exclusive 10% off everything in-store.

The upgraded loyalty scheme introduces a strong package of everyday value for members, including a welcome hot drink upon registration, a birthday treat of a hot drink and cake, weekly exclusive member deals, weekday morning restaurant discounts, and a monthly 'Swipe & Win' prize draw where customers can be entered into a monthly draw to win a full refund for their entire month's shopping.

Streamlining in-store operations and digital stamps:  Behind the scenes, the relaunch brings important operational updates to modernise the customer journey. Traditional paper stamp cards for hot drinks and meals are transitioning directly onto the Family Card, allowing customers to automatically track rewards via simple till scans while removing paper clutter from the counters.

To ensure a smooth rollout for both shoppers and till teams, British Garden Centres has distributed new registration tablets across its portfolio, ensuring every store has dedicated hardware to sign customers up in seconds.

Anna Worboyes, Loyalty Manager at British Garden Centres, said: “Reaching five years of the Family Card is a fantastic milestone for us, and it’s all thanks to the strong connections our teams have built with local communities across our 80 locations. By upgrading what the card offers, from monthly shop refunds to digital stamp collection and supporting our store teams with new till-side tablets, we are making it easier than ever for customers to get rewarded while helping our centres drive long-term loyalty.”

Launch of industry-wide employee survey across horticulture and landscaping

The Horticultural Trades Association, on behalf of the Access All Areas group, has launched a new industry-wide employee survey for people working in environmental horticulture and landscaping...

The Horticultural Trades Association, on behalf of the Access All Areas group, has launched a new industry-wide employee survey for people working in environmental horticulture and landscaping.

Open to anyone working in the sector, the survey aims to build a clearer picture of today's workforce and identify opportunities to make the sector more welcoming and inclusive by capturing the experiences and perspectives of as many employees as possible across a wide range of roles, backgrounds, and career pathways.

Horticulture Industry Employer Workforce Survey & Horticulture: The Industry Employee Survey is being delivered by the HTA on behalf of the Access All Areas (AAA) Group, a partnership of organisations from across horticulture, landscaping, arboriculture, and garden media working together to improve equity, diversity, and inclusion across the industry.

Open to anyone working in horticulture and landscaping, the anonymous survey takes about 5 minutes to complete. It is designed to capture the experiences and perspectives of people working throughout the industry, whatever their role, background or career path. This includes those working in garden retail, plant production, landscaping and grounds maintenance, garden design, forestry, garden tourism, technical horticulture, garden goods manufacturing, garden media and industry service providers.

The research will update the AAA Group's first industry survey, carried out in 2023, helping the group understand where progress has been made and where further action is needed. This individual employee survey also follows a separate employer workforce survey conducted with businesses across the sector.

The survey explores:

  • Who makes up today's environmental horticulture and landscaping workforce.
  • Experiences and attitudes towards inclusion within the workplace.
  • Awareness of, and participation in, equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Factors that help or hinder people feeling welcome and able to thrive in the industry.

Responses will be anonymous and confidential, will not be identifiable in the analysis or published findings, and will be handled in line with the Market Research Society's Code of Conduct.

Jennifer Pheasey, Director of Policy & Public Affairs at the Horticultural Trades Association, and co-chair of the Access All Areas Group said: "This survey is about listening to the people who make our industry what it is. Whether you work in retail, growing, landscaping, garden design, manufacturing, research and development, arboriculture, garden media or another part of environmental horticulture, your voice matters.

"We want to invite as many people to take part as possible so we have the best understanding of the industry's workforce and the strongest evidence base we can gather for future action. We encourage everyone to complete the survey and share it with colleagues and contacts across the sector."

The survey is open now and can be completed here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/M3V2L3W

The HTA and the Access All Areas Group are encouraging businesses, organisations and individuals across the industry to complete the survey and share it with colleagues, contacts and industry friends, helping ensure as many voices as possible are represented in the findings.

WD-40 Company launches first Water Based Degreaser

WD-40 Company, the globally renowned maintenance brand, has announced the launch of its first water-based formula, backed by product testing that found 98% of tradespeople and 99% of DIYers say it meets their needs...

WD-40 Company, the globally renowned maintenance brand, has announced the launch of its first water-based formula, backed by product testing that found 98% of tradespeople and 99% of DIYers say it meets their needs.

Designed for professionals and home users alike, WD-40 Specialist® Professional Degreaser (Water-Based) is a ready-to-use cleaner that can also be diluted to suit a wide range of cleaning jobs.

From stripping thick, stubborn grease off engines and lawnmowers, to light everyday cleaning of windows and bodywork, its biodegradable formula cuts through dirt and grime quickly, even at low concentrations, while remaining non-abrasive and non-flammable, making it safe to use on paintwork, steel, aluminium, plastic and rubber.

The product is available in two formats: a 1-litre ready-to-use trigger spray bottle and a 5-litre refill container, and is NSF A8 registered.

The launch is grounded in market research of 150 tradespeople and 200 DIYers, which found that safety, ease of use and speed of action are the top purchase drivers for both groups when choosing a cleaner or degreaser, criteria the new water-based formula was specifically developed to meet.

Early product testing delivered strong results: 96% of tradespeople and 97% of DIYers agreed the product is of high quality, while 98% of tradespeople and 99% of DIYers said it meets their needs. The majority of both groups indicated a willingness to purchase the product, whether as a replacement for their current degreaser or as a valuable supplement to their existing toolkit.

James Jermyn, Trade Marketing Manager for WD-40 Company, commented: “The launch of WD-40 Specialist Water-Based Degreaser marks a significant expansion into a new category of maintenance solutions for WD-40 Company, combining outstanding cleaning performance with enhanced efficiency and sustainability.”

WD-40 Specialist Water Based Degreaser joins the existing solvent-based WD-40 Specialist Degreaser as part of a broader range that includes Penetrant, Silicone, White Lithium Grease, Dry Lubricant, Cutting Oil, Spray Grease and Contact Cleaner.

While the original solvent-based degreaser remains ideal for heavy-duty cleaning where fast evaporation and drying are required, the new water-based formula offers a lower-odour, non-flammable alternative that is dilutable for multiple applications, giving customers the flexibility to choose the right tool for the job.

APL garden awarded Platinum and Best Showcase Garden at BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair

The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) show garden at BBC Gardeners' World Autumn Fair, involving nine member businesses and two apprentices, has been awarded Platinum and Best Showcase Garden in the final show of the season...

The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) show garden at BBC Gardeners' World Autumn Fair, involving nine member businesses and two apprentices, has been awarded Platinum and Best Showcase Garden in the final show of the season. The collaboration garden, ‘The Association of Professional Landscapers Elevated Garden Living’, was designed and built by the Horticultural Trades Association’s (HTA) specialist designer and landscaper members in just three and a half days.

The garden at Audley End House and Gardens features a raised, terraced area for relaxing and growing, surrounded by lush planting and complemented by a small water feature. It was designed by DesignScape and built by Holland Landscapes, Landscapes by Design, TKE Landscaping, Adscape, Cordes Horticultural Ltd, Haldon Construction Ltd, Bramley Apple Garden Design and Jacq and Wills Landscapes.

Phil Tremayne, the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) General Manager, said:

“We are thrilled to be awarded Platinum and Best in Show for the second year running. It’s an amazing achievement to build to this level in such a short space of time, and it’s wonderful to see our members collaborate in such a great fashion and pass their knowledge on to the two young apprentices. I know it has also been a magnificent experience for them.”

For two members of the Association of Professional Landscapers Elevated Garden Living build team, being awarded Platinum and Best in Show was especially important. Ellis Thomas from Martins Garden Management and Jett Benson from Landscape Associates, both landscaping apprentices from Merrist Wood College, have gained their first show garden build experience.

Ellis Thomas said:

"My highlights were being able to get on the bigger tools, like using a ground screw rig for the first time. I also learnt how to do a bit of cladding. It was a really great experience.”

Jett Benson added:

"Being able to shadow these landscapers that are incredibly skilled, becoming more independent and also learning new skills has been a real highlight.”

The show at Audley End House and Gardens opens to the public today (11 - 13 September 2026), where visitors can see firsthand what can be achieved by using the services of professional designers and professional landscapers. The Association of Professional Landscapers will also be sharing their expertise and advice alongside members at a free Drop-in Design and Landscaping Clinic.

At BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair, there was also a Platinum award for member Fenton Gardens, who designed and built ‘For the Love of Birds’. This brings the total to 66 medals and awards for the HTA’s specialist designer and landscaper members across this year’s show season, highlighting their excellence, dedication and professionalism.

Manchester garden designer wins Best Beautiful Border at BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair

Old Trafford-based Edward Doherty from J. Parker’s, the online garden and plant retailer, has won Best Beautiful Border and a Platinum award at the BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair which returns to Audley End House and Gardens, Saffron Walden this weekend (11 - 13 September)...

Old Trafford-based Edward Doherty from J. Parker’s, the online garden and plant retailer, has won Best Beautiful Border and a Platinum award at the BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair which returns to Audley End House and Gardens, Saffron Walden this weekend (11 - 13 September).

Always a favourite feature at BBC Gardeners’ World events, the Beautiful Borders are compact show gardens packed with ideas for smaller-scale garden spaces. There’s a new creative theme every year, and this year it’s ‘Once Upon a Time’, a perfect introduction to fascinating stories told through plants.

The winning Border is Reflection, a nostalgic journey through childhood memories of the Irish countryside. The garden features a winding path surrounded by cottage-style planting that incorporates favourite plant choices of three generations of family gardeners. Five wooden pillars symbolise the enduring bond between Edward and his siblings, rooted in shared early experiences, despite living in different parts of the world. Edward hopes the Border will inspire Autumn Fair visitors to reflect on how early experiences may have shaped their own gardening adventures. He also scooped Best Subscriber Border – an award for designers that subscribe to BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine.

Receiving his Best Beautiful Border award, Edward said: “Plants and horticulture have played a huge role in my life, and I wanted to create a family garden that taps into my Irish heritage. This is the first show garden I’ve created for a big event and I’m delighted that my childhood memories resonated with the judges. All the Borders at the Autumn Fair tell people’s personal stories and it’s been lovely to be part of that.”

Facing the tough task of reviewing this year’s Beautiful Borders was a team of expert show garden assessors. Gardening editor, horticulturalist and journalist, Ian Hodgson, led the assessment panel, joined by multi award-winning garden designers Lucy Bravington and Mike Baldwin. Mike Baldwin is the recipient of a BBC Gardeners’ World Live Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional contribution to horticulture, following a 36-year career as a horticulture and landscaping lecturer at Derby College. He has created more than 100 show gardens and community projects.

Head assessor Ian Hodgson said: “Edward thoroughly deserved to win both prizes. His Reflection Border was an absolute triumph, full of colour and drama, capturing his childhood days in Donegal.”

Best Interpretation of the Theme and a Platinum award went to Saachi Parasrampuria, Marko Yau and James Miller from Amaranth Collaborative, a landscape and garden design practice in Worthing, Sussex, for their Childhood Discovered Border. This relaxed, wildlife-friendly space celebrates curiosity, creativity and a connection with nature. Its colourful planting and naturalistic areas encourage exploration, with wilder areas to attract wildlife and bees. All materials used in the Border are salvaged or recycled. After the Autumn Fair, the garden will be relocated to St. Elizabeth’s, a charity supporting children, young people and adults with complex needs in Much Hadham, Hertfordshire.

Head assessor Ian Hodgson said: “The planting in this garden is ethereal and beautiful, and shone in the sunlight. The attention to detail was meticulous and the children the garden has been created for are going to love it.”

Saachi Parasrampuria from Amaranth Collaborative said: “It’s been a really fun, enjoyable and creative process. We’re so delighted to have won this award and want to inspire people about what can be achieved on a budget in their own gardens.”

One garden that is sure to catch visitors’ attention this year is the BBC Gardeners’ World Make a Metre Matter Border. Co-created by Essex garden designer Lucy Chamberlainand BBC Newsround presenter and keen allotment grower, De-Graft Mensah, the Make a Metre Matter Border is a reminder that even the smallest garden spaces can help the health of the planet by supporting wildlife and biodiversity and reducing food miles. BBC Gardeners’ World Make a Metre Matter supports the UK’s 30by30 target to protect 30% of land and sea for nature by 2030. More than 16,720 campaign metres have been pledged to date.

Autumn Fair visitors are invited to vote for their own personal favourite Beautiful Borders throughout the event’s three days, culminating in the presentation of a People’s Choice award on Sunday afternoon.

Isobel Mills, Horticultural Events Manager at Immediate Live, organisers of the BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair, said: “From first-time designers and experienced garden teams to charities and local community organisations, the talented teams behind these Borders are sure to make a big impact at the Autumn Fair. This year’s ‘Once Upon a Time’ theme has really fired entrants’ imaginations and there are some wonderful stories told, from childhood memories and lived experiences to inspiring causes and seasonal reflections. Congratulations to Edward Doherty and J. Parker’s for their brilliant Best in Show Border and to everyone that entered. We can’t wait to see more of their work in years to come.”

The BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair runs from 11 – 13 September at English Heritage’s spectacular Audley End House and Gardens in Saffron Walden. Bursting with inspiration and take-home ideas, highlights include Showcase Gardens, Beautiful Borders and floral displays. There’s expert advice from BBC Gardeners’ World TV presenters and Magazine editors, the Association of Professional Landscapers and specialist plant nurseries. There are entertaining conversations with gardening personalities, a wide range of quality plants and bulbs, and extensive garden and lifestyle shopping. At the Good Food Market, there’s delicious food and drink, street food, artisan producers and live music.

To make the very most from their day out, visitors can join a floral workshop, a tour of Audley End’s gardens hosted by the Fair’s Plant Experts, or a seat at the Autumn Table where food and drink writer and broadcaster Andy Clarke will be hosting a daily programme of exciting tasting sessions.

Tickets for the BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair are available at www.bbcgardenersworldfair.com and include access to Audley End House, grounds and gardens. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome in the Fair’s outdoor spaces.

North Norfolk is the best place for gardeners to live

North Norfolk is the best place to move to if you love gardening, new research has revealed...

North Norfolk is the best place to move to if you love gardening, new research has revealed.

The finding comes from a study by hedging specialists Hedges Direct, which analysed 346 local authorities across Britain on seven key factors that contribute to an ideal set-up for keen gardeners. The metrics include average garden space, climate, soil type and public gardens, which were combined into an index to produce a score out of 100, rating each area's suitability for the horticulturally inclined.

North Norfolk came top of the ranking after scoring well across multiple factors, particularly garden space, with a typical private outdoor space of 346 square metres, the 10th largest in Britain, and 71% above the national figure of 202 square metres. It also performs well for affordability, as an average house price of £303,474 means that garden space comes at a cost of £876 per square metre, which ranks 23rd lowest nationally. The factor it ranks highest on is allotment land, with North Norfolk having 72 sites, which works out at 1.29 hectares per 1,000 homes – the fifth best in the study.

Overall, North Norfolk ranks in the top half for each of the seven metrics that were measured, something only five of the 346 areas manage. It ends up with a final index score of 68.2 out of 100, making it Britain's best place to be a gardener.

The area of Cotswold District Council finishes second overall on 66.4 out of 100, performing best in offering inspiration to gardeners thanks to 29 historic gardens and 35 gardens that are part of the National Garden Scheme and open for the public to visit. When compared against the population size, it ranks best in England and third overall in Britain, behind only Welsh local authorities Powys and Monmouthshire. Cotswold also has the fourth best score for allotment land –there are 68 sites, at a ratio of 1.31 hectares per 1,000 homes.

The third best place to move for gardeners is East Cambridgeshire, on 64.4 out of 100. Its topsoil pH of 6.6 is close to the 6.5 that suits the widest range of garden plants, and it has the longest growing season of the top five, at 288 days, with the national range running from 206 days in Perth and Kinross to a full 365 in the mildest southern and coastal districts. Gardens in East Cambridgeshire are typically 266 square metres, the 54th largest in the study, and the area holds 36 gardens that open to the public.

West Oxfordshire takes fourth place overall with 63.5 points out of 100, and along with Cotswold it is one of only two areas in the overall top five to also finish in the top five for gardens to visit. Just three areas in Britain have more gardens opening to the public than the 74 gardens in West Oxfordshire, and it holds a further 16 historic gardens, which together place it fourth in the country on that factor.

Fifth place goes to South Cambridgeshire, on an overall score of 62.9 out of 100. It has a typical garden size of 258 square metres, the 64th largest, and is home to 45 gardens that open to the public alongside 12 on the historic register.

Eastern England accounts for four of the ten highest-scoring areas, with three from the South East, two from the East Midlands and one from the South West. The Isle of Anglesey in Wales is the highest-placed area outside England, in 12th, and Richmond upon Thames is the best-placed London borough, in 95th. Sefton in Merseyside is the North West’s top place for gardeners, while in the North East the best area is Redcar and Cleveland, and East Riding is number one in Yorkshire and the Humber. Scotland’s ideal location for garden enthusiasts is Na h-Eileanan Siar, also known as the Outer Hebrides.

Commenting on the study, Martin Chaplin, Head of Horticulture at Hedges Direct, said: "The conditions gardeners are working with vary much more than people tend to realise. In some parts of Britain the average temperature is conducive to plant growth nearly all year round, whereas in other areas it is too cold for multiple months, and a typical garden ranges from under 50 square metres in some areas to more than 700 in others, so two gardeners doing exactly the same things in different parts of the country will get very different results.

"Shelter is the other thing that gets underestimated. Wind does more damage to plants in an exposed garden than cold does, and a hedge filters it rather than forcing it over the top the way a solid fence does, which makes a real difference to what will grow in an exposed spot."

Cities putting plants at the heart of urban solutions

The AIPH World Green City Awards recognise city-led initiatives that demonstrate how plants and green infrastructure can help address some of the most significant challenges facing urban communities.

The Awards are grounded in the evidence of what plants can do for cities. Their seven categories focus on areas where plants and green infrastructure can make a meaningful contribution to positive urban outcomes, spanning biodiversity and ecosystem restoration, climate change, health and wellbeing, water, social cohesion and inclusive communities, urban agriculture and food systems, and urban infrastructure and liveability.

The 21 Finalist cities demonstrate what this can look like in practice across different cities, climates and communities – from adapting to extreme heat, flooding and drought and restoring biodiversity, to improving health and wellbeing, strengthening communities and transforming urban spaces.

Audrey Timm, AIPH Technical Initiatives Manager, commented: “The 21 Finalists demonstrate the breadth of ways in which cities are using plants and green infrastructure to respond to real urban challenges. The Awards give us an opportunity to recognise these achievements and share the knowledge and practical experience behind them, so that cities around the world can learn from one another.”

Who will take home the 2026 Awards?

During the announcement, AIPH will reveal the seven Category Winners, as well as the AIPH Youth Award Winner, Certificates of Merit recipients and the AIPH World Green City Award 2026 Grand Winner.

The stories and learning behind the Finalists and Winners will continue to be shared internationally following the announcement, showcasing practical examples of how cities are using plants and green infrastructure to create greener, healthier and more resilient urban environments.

Dobbies Garden Centres Group Limited has filed its annual accounts for the year to 1 March 2026.

Dobbies has reported an EBITDA profit of £0.5m in FY26, a significant year on year improvement. Our key financial measures all improved this year, indicating the success of the first full year of Dobbies' growth strategy.

  • Revenue increased by 10% to £221.8m (FY25: £201m);
  • Customer footfall increased;
  • Average Transaction Value grew;
  • Margin increased by 200 bps;
  • The combination of the increase in revenue and the improved margin rate led to a 15% increase in Gross Margin; while
  • other income grew 16% to £9.9m, reflecting the continued success of Dobbies' concession partner network.

The growth strategy has focused on improving and extending product ranges, refurbishing stores, enhancing restaurant menus and improving the overall customer proposition. During the year, Dobbies invested £4m in refurbishing seven stores and introduced a new £1.5m Foodhall concept across the estate. Both initiatives performed ahead of expectations, supporting customer engagement and commercial performance.

Customer metrics also strengthened during FY26. Net Promoter Score (NPS) increased, reflecting improvements to stores and restaurants, while the Club Plus loyalty programme continued to attract new members and encourage more frequent visits through exclusive offers, discounts and free hot drinks.

David Robinson, Chief Executive Officer of Dobbies, said: "I am delighted with the progress the business has made this year.

"We have made positive improvements against our key metrics, and we have remained focused on the areas that matter most to our customers - our stores, plants and product ranges, restaurants and overall experience. That focus has delivered improved performance and a return to profitability.

"Our customers are at the heart of everything we do, and we are seeing more people visit our stores more often to shop, dine and take part in events and community activities.  Our customers donated £235,000 to our partner charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK, following the launch of our new community partnership during the year.

“These results would not be possible without the commitment of our colleagues, who have worked tirelessly to deliver a fantastic experience to our customers.  I would like to thank them for their hard work.

“I would also like to thank our concession partners and suppliers, who have supported Dobbies through this stage of its growth and whose ongoing support has made an important contribution to our progress this year.

"Looking ahead to FY27, we are continuing to see a year on year improvement in our key metrics and progress against our strategic plan.  We are continuing to invest in our estate with redevelopment plans underway in our Galton, Woodbridge and Lisburn garden centres.  This illustrates the potential of this great business and I remain excited for the future."

Zero-Hours Reform: Why smarter workforce planning could become essential for garden centres
GTN Xtra Promotion

WorkForce Manager's AI-powered SMART Rota has been developed specifically for garden centres and nurseries. By considering employee availability, skills, contracts, holidays, compliance requirements, planned events and even weather forecasts, it helps managers place the right people in the right place at the right time, while maintaining control of labour costs...

The way garden centres manage flexible workers could soon face significant change.

In its response to the Government's consultation on reforms to zero-hours and similar contracts, the Horticultural Trades Association highlighted the unique workforce challenges faced by environmental horticulture. Seasonal demand, changing weather conditions, hospitality operations, student workers and fluctuating customer footfall all combine to create staffing pressures unlike those seen in traditional retail.

With proposals including guaranteed hours based on historic working patterns and greater obligations around shift management, maintaining flexibility while ensuring compliance is likely to become increasingly important.

For many Garden Centres, this raises an important question: do existing workforce planning processes provide the visibility and control needed for a more regulated employment environment?

Managing rotas through spreadsheets, paper schedules and disconnected systems can make it difficult to track working patterns, employee availability, skills, compliance requirements and labour costs. At the same time, managers are expected to respond quickly to changing demand driven by weather, seasonal peaks and local events.

This is where technology can help.

Skyline WorkForce Manager's AI-powered SMART Rota has been developed specifically for Garden Centres and Nurseries. By considering employee availability, skills, contracts, holidays, compliance requirements, planned events and even weather forecasts, it helps managers place the right people in the right place at the right time, while maintaining control of labour costs.

As workforce regulations evolve, better workforce planning isn't just about compliance. It's about protecting margins, maintaining customer service and making informed staffing decisions with confidence.

Visit us on Stand 17H30 at Glee (8-10 September) to see Skyline WorkForce Manager in action and discover how smarter workforce planning can help your Garden Centre stay ahead of coming workforce challenges.
