Green cities and water management in focus

Innovations for water management in ornamental horticulture and greening cities in an arid climate are on the agenda for the 2024 AIPH Spring Meeting, due to take place 3-7 March in Doha, Qatar. The five-day event is organised by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) with the support of Host Sponsor Expo 2023 Doha Qatar and Headline Sponsor Biblo.

On Monday 4 March 2024, organisers of forthcoming AIPH-approved Expos will share updates on their progress at the International Expo Conference. Delegates will have the chance to explore Expo 2023 Doha in the afternoon on a VIP tour. The A1 World Horticultural Expo is the first of its kind to be hosted in a desert climate. With a theme of ‘Green Desert, Better Environment’, the Expo showcases the latest greening techniques to prove that a green desert is possible.

The AIPH Green City Conference takes place on Tuesday 5 March and will welcome key figures from around the world to offer their insights on the challenge of greening cities in arid climates. Desert cities are found on all continents and share concerns around water availability, urban heat island effects, and energy use. This conference explores the strategies adopted to create liveable and efficient cities, putting the attenuating capacity of plants at the centre of city form and function. Speakers include: H.E Dr Ali Al Jassin, Chairman of the Emirates Green Building Council; Jala Makhzoumi, Vice President of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA); Dr Mario V Balzan, Senior Lecturer at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST), and Founder and Managing Director at Ecostack Innovations; and Huda Shaka, Director of Urban Strategy and Planning, Gehl.

On Wednesday 6 March, the AIPH Horticultural Industry Conference will present innovations in water management for ornamentals production. AIPH members from around the world will report on the water management challenges faced by growers in their countries, how growers are being supported to face these challenges, innovations for sustainable solutions, and what this means for the future of the industry. Following this conference, guests will be taken on a tour of key green city sites within the Doha municipality, including the National Museum of Qatar and Education City.

Finally, the AIPH Spring Meeting will conclude on Thursday 7 March with professional visits to local producers and other key locations in the Doha municipality, followed by a farewell dinner.

Early bird tickets for the AIPH Spring Meeting are available until 13 February 2024 and cost only £380 GBP. For more information and to book your place at this inspiring meeting, visit the AIPH Website.

AIPH thanks Host Sponsor Expo 2023 Doha Qatar, Headline Sponsor Biblo, Expo Conference Partners AGES, Green City Conference Partners Earthna, IFLA, and ISOCARP, and Media Partners FloraCulture International, Guiaverde, and Host City for their support of this event.
