Hot spell dries up plant sales

‘Hot colour’ plants Salvia, Tagetes and Coleus were the only plants in the Bestsellers Top 20 to increase sales.

Generally people stopped buying plants as the mercury soared. It seems we just can’t win – earlier in the year plant sales slumped when we had weeks of cold winds, now the highest June temperatures in 40 years have had the same effect.
  • Gaillardia, a member of the sunflower family and another of the ‘hot’ plants was the highest re-entry to the Top 50, back in at No 27.
  • Gerberas increased sales by 72% to re-enter at No 30.
  • Festuca grasses also sold well in the heat, climbing 15 places up to No 32.
