Whitehall Woodborough sold to new owners following the sale of Whitehall Whitchurch to Otter last month

Specialist business property adviser Christie & Co has announced the sale of Whitehall Garden Centre Woodborough, near Pewsey, to local entrepreneurs and new industry entrants Ranu Limited...

Specialist business property adviser Christie & Co has announced the sale of Whitehall Garden Centre Woodborough, near Pewsey, to local entrepreneurs and new industry entrants Ranu Limited.

The business has been run by the Self family for many years, who also own the larger Lacock Garden Centre, near Chippenham, which the family will continue to run following the sale of their Whitchurch centre to Otter Garden Cenres last month.

Claire Self, Director of Whitehall Garden Centres, commented, “When we made the decision to sell our Woodborough centre, it was important to us as a family to find the right buyer who will continue the store as a garden centre and keep our existing staff in their roles.

“We would like to thank all our dedicated and hard-working staff who have been part of the Whitehall team for many years, and we wish them all the best with the new direction of the store and the future.

“We would also like to thank all our loyal customers who have visited the centre over the years and supported us as a business and family.”

The garden centre at Woodborough occupies a large site and has a popular farm shop, restaurant and extensive garden centre offering.

The new owners have a background in childcare businesses, but this acquisition marks their first venture into the garden centre industry. The father-and-daughter team plan to run the business with a long-term goal to continue improving and developing the business.

Raj Kumar commented, “After almost 20 years of operating exclusively within the education sector, the time had come to diversify. This acquisition of Woodborough Garden Centre marks our first move into retail and garden centres with a commitment to upholding the prestigious reputation Whitehall has built over the years.

“Throughout this process, the support from Whitehall has been invaluable. With their continued efforts working closely alongside us, from the preliminary discussions to post-completion, it meant we always had what we needed to feel well-prepared and assured at every stage. And a huge thank you to Tom from Christie & Co for supporting and facilitating this journey.

“Woodborough Garden Centre will continue as a family-run business with strong community roots as established by Whitehall. The team on the ground has also cultivated a fantastic culture which we intend to build upon as we move forward.  We look forward to welcoming both our existing and new customers in this exciting new chapter.”

Tom Glanvill, Director – Garden Centres at Christie & Co, added, “Woodborough is a lovely garden centre that offers locals an independent and family-run farm shop, restaurant and excellent horticulture-focused garden centre. I am very pleased that we have sold this to local buyers who have the desire and drive to take the business forward. I see huge potential here, and this transaction highlights the continued demand we are seeing for garden centres, with this being the third garden centre sale that we have completed in August.”

From Lincolnshire fields to the nation’s gardens – British Garden Centres turns 35

From a single site in Woodthorpe, Lincolnshire, in 1990, British Garden Centres' phenomenal growth has continued with the announcement of major acquisitions this year, making them the largest family-run garden centre group by stores in the country.

2025 marks a special milestone for the company as it celebrates its 35th anniversary on the 25th August. From opening that first site in Woodthorpe back in 1990 to becoming a nationally recognised brand while keeping its headquarters firmly in Lincolnshire, the anniversary is a moment of reflection and pride for the Stubbs family and the thousands of colleagues who have contributed to its journey.

Securing the former Dobbies sites at Shinfield, Gloucester, Gosforth, Heighley Gate, Rugby, Havant, and Northampton, then Hayes Garden World in the Lakes marks the latest expansion for the now UK-wide business, and this Lincolnshire-grown success story shows no sign of slowing down.  These additions brought the company's portfolio to an impressive 73 garden retail sites across the UK, a testament to its incredible journey from its Lincolnshire roots, 35 years ago.

The phenomenal growth of British Garden Centres since its humble beginnings in 1990 is a testament to the power of family, a hard-working team, and a deep-rooted passion for gardening.

Charles Stubbs and his brother displayed an entrepreneurial spirit as teenagers by selling plant cuttings outside Woodthorpe Hall. Over the years, the brothers’ reputation grew far and wide. They were featured on the local news program Calendar for their entrepreneurial skills.

This early venture laid the foundation for what would become a thriving national business that has now become the UK’s largest garden centre group by number of stores. Charles, together with Robert and Phillippa, developed a business that expanded from a single garden centre near their home to the flagship Brigg Garden Centre. This growth transformed their venture into Britain’s largest garden centre group, which increased from 10 locations in 2018 to 73 in 2025, with five of those being in Lincolnshire (Woodthorpe, Brigg, Louth, Chapel, Horncastle).

As Woodthorpe Garden Centre turns 35 and Brigg Garden Centre reaches its 25th birthday this year, celebrations honour their place at the heart of the local community and their role as one of Lincolnshire’s most visited and best-loved destinations. Long-time customers, dedicated staff, and local organisations will come together to mark the occasion.

The next chapter

As the number of centres has grown, so too has our team. One of the things we’re most proud of is that we remain an independent, family-run business. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see the next generation of the Stubbs step up to roles within the business and bring fresh and engaging ideas to grow the group further.

Squire's raises over £24,000 for local community charities

Squire’s Garden Centres has once again demonstrated its commitment to local communities, raising an impressive £24,861.84 through its annual ‘Charity of the Year’ programme. The initiative, now in its 14th year, saw all 17 Squire’s centres – along with its Group Office in Farnham – partner with a local charity from 1 August 2024 to 31 July 2025...

Squire’s Garden Centres has once again demonstrated its commitment to local communities, raising an impressive £24,861.84 through its annual ‘Charity of the Year’ programme. The initiative, now in its 14th year, saw all 17 Squire’s centres – along with its Group Office in Farnham – partner with a local charity from 1 August 2024 to 31 July 2025.

Under the programme, each garden centre chooses a charity that meets specific criteria: it must be a registered charity, benefit local people with funds used locally rather than going into a national pot, and support either local people or the environment.

Sam Dickson, Managing Director of Squire’s Garden Centres, comments: "This fantastic achievement reflects the passion and dedication of our colleagues across the business and the incredible generosity of our customers. By working closely with charities rooted in the heart of our communities, we’re able to make a very real and positive impact. I’m hugely proud of what has been achieved this year – every pound raised will help make a difference where it’s needed most."

Fundraising efforts were centre-led and varied, ranging from collection boxes and raffles to ticketed events such as Squire’s Christmas grottos, as well as other activities.  Centres, including Crawley, Reigate and Shepperton, hosted special anniversary customer events this year, marking significant milestones of the centre and enabling them to boost donations through charity raffles.

Beyond the crucial fundraising, the programme helps raise awareness of the charities’ work and often creates opportunities for hands-on involvement, providing valuable and rewarding experiences for both charity and Squire’s centre teams.

In addition to the ‘Charity of the Year’ partnerships, Squire’s also supports two national horticultural charities; Greenfingers Charity, which creates gardens for children’s hospices and for whom Squire’s raised £6,300 this year through the sale of carrier bags - and Perennial, the UK charity supporting people in horticulture - as well as a range of other local causes and events throughout the year.

Looking ahead to the new Charity Year 2025-26 (commenced 1 August), 11 Squire’s centres will be welcoming new charity partners, these include:

  • Badshot Lea – Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity
  • Chertsey - Ashford & St Peter’s Hospitals’ Charities
  • Cobham – The Meeting Room
  • Frensham - Woodlarks Accessible Campsite
  • Milford – The Samson Centre
  • Reigate - Home Start East Surrey
  • Shepperton - Families Thrive Together
  • Stanmore – Norwood
  • Washington - St Barnabus Hospice
  • West Horsley - Queen Elizabeth Foundation
  • Wokingham - The Cowshed

Six centres will continue to support their existing charity partners for a further year; Age Concern Brighton & West Sussex (Squire’s Crawley), Age Concern Twyford & District (Squire’s Hare Hatch), Home Start Elmbridge (Squire’s Hersham), Walton Charity (Squire’s Long Ditton), Homelink (Squire’s Twickenham) and Woking & Sam Beare Hospice (Squire’s Woking).

The Garden Centre Association July 2025 Barometer of Trade (BoT) shows ‘a good mid-summer performance’.

Member garden centres reported that eight of the 13 categories recorded did well, when compared to 2024, with furniture and BBQs, up at +16.72%, crowned July’s best performing section.

GCA CEO, Peter Burks, says: “Great to have had a nice bounce back to our sales in July following the heat in June. However, gardening did suffer still from the heat and drought conditions, but the fair-weather category of furniture and BBQs had a great month as everyone wanted to get outdoors.

“The other non-weather dependent categories also did what they are there to do and supported the overall performance with nice uplifts in gifts, clothing, food halls/farm shops and catering. Overall, a good mid-summer performance despite the heat and hose pipe bans in some areas.”

Clothing recorded the second-best sales figures in July, when compared to the same month in 2024, up at +11.76%, followed by gifts at +9.8%, catering at +8.32% came next and then food hall/farm shop at +6.38%.

The miscellaneous category recorded +1.89%, with seeds & bulbs was in seventh place at +1.16% and pets & aquatics next at +0.77%.

The garden sundries category was slightly down at -0.35%, then houseplants at -0.92%, outdoor plants down at -4.9% and hard landscaping at -6.99%.

The GCA’s BoT reports covering 13 categories are compiled using actual sales figures and provide an up-to-date trading position statement. They are made available mid-month following the end of the prior month after all member garden centres have submitted their results.

The BoT allows members to compare their trading positions with other centres.

The GCA represents more than 200 garden centres nationwide.

Through sharing information and its inspection programme the GCA helps members to achieve high standards in customer service, plant quality and reliability.

Tickets for the GCA’s 2026 Annual Conference are now on sale via the members’ section on the body’s website or via https://gca.digitickets.co.uk/.

An intrepid team of fundraisers is gearing up to scale Africa’s tallest peak in a bold and inspiring effort to raise vital funds and awareness for the Greenfingers Charity, which creates therapeutic gardens for children’s hospices across the UK.

From 10th to 21st June 2026, a group of 17 passionate individuals, comprising well-known faces from the garden retail and horticultural industry, along with friends, family, and colleagues, will take on the formidable challenge of summiting Mount Kilimanjaro, the legendary ‘Roof of Africa’. Towering at 5,895m, Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s most iconic and demanding bucket-list climbs.

Among those undertaking this life-changing journey are GIMA President Kate Ebbens, Phillippa Stubbs and Libby Stubbs of British Garden Centres, Heidi Baylis Towse representing Greenfingers and Blue Diamond, Greenfingers Ambassador, Bob Marley, Alexa Blackmore and Sarah Edmondson from The Gardens Group, Matt Jones of Sipcam and his partner Nicola, Daniel, Jodie and Matthew Rowlandson, Tara Adams from AMES, Nicole and David Higginson of New Leaf Plants, and Richard Howard of Doddington Nurseries with his partner Tia Blunt.

Organised by Charity Challenge, the trek will lead participants through Kilimanjaro’s breathtaking and diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts and the stark, lunar-like summit plateau. Over seven days, the team will face extreme altitude and physical exertion, culminating in a demanding overnight ascent to witness the sunrise from the summit, a moment destined to be etched in memory.

This monumental effort is in aid of Greenfingers Charity’s mission to create magical outdoor spaces at children’s hospices, offering life-limited children and their families moments of joy, comfort, and reflection in nature.

Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising & Communications at Greenfingers Charity, said: “Over the years, our incredible supporters have shown unwavering dedication to helping Greenfingers bring hospice gardens to life. The Kilimanjaro challenge is the ultimate test, both physically and emotionally, but the impact is immeasurable. Standing at the summit, knowing you’ve helped create magical and therapeutic gardens for children and families, is a reward like no other. We’re immensely proud of this team and can’t wait to follow their journey to the top of Africa.”

Arbor Forest Products launches Wood & Slumber

Arbor Forest Products, the UK’s largest independent timber importer and processor, has launched Wood & Slumber – investing over £2 million in cutting-edge baling and packaging technology to create a premium brand softwood small flake equine bedding.

The bedding, which is produced from sustainably sourced pine and spruce timber, is processed in Arbor’s state-of-the-art sawmill operations located within their 90-acre site in New Holland, Lincolnshire.

Wood & Slumber offers a superior softwood small flake shaving made entirely from sterile, kiln dried, 100% sustainable wood, a by-product of Arbor’s core timber processing operations. Wood & Slumber is available exclusively through stockists nationwide, helping to support local retailers and specialist equine outlets.

Phil Yell, Operations Director at Arbor Forest Products said: “At Arbor, we’re committed to making the very best use of every part of the timber we process. Wood & Slumber is a natural extension of that ethos – turning what was once processed and packed by others into a valuable premium product carrying Arbor’s own branding.

“We’ve invested in the technology and the processing infrastructure o produce a top-of-the-range product, and we’re proud to offer an equine bedding solution that’s clean, consistent, and completely sustainable. It reflects everything we stand for as an innovative business – quality, integrity, and a drive to continue to improve the quality and reduce waste across everything we do.”

The £2 million of investment in cutting-edge baling and packaging technology from Willems only goes to underline Arbor’s zero-waste philosophy. The product is processed on-site using the latest sieving and dust extraction systems to ensure a consistently high-quality dust-extracted product. It also meets all the latest and stringent hygiene, safety and environmental standards.

Arbor is currently working toward a BETA / NOPS accreditation further demonstrating to the equine industry Arbor’s commitment to excellence through its quality protocols, sourcing provenance and traceability.

The launch represents a strategic step for Arbor to move closer to the end customer, generating demand directly through equine markets and supporting the growth of retail distribution via country stores nationwide.

Arbor currently produces upward of 15,000 tonnes of wood shavings each year: the equivalent of around 750,000 bales. Wood & Slumber represents a multi-million-pound increase in value to Arbor of this valuable by-product.

The International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) is delighted to announce a strategic partnership with the Resilient and Inclusive Cities Lab (RICL) at the Asian School of the Environment (ASE), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, bringing fresh expertise and practical benefits to cities entering the AIPH World Green City Awards 2026.

In recognition of these added benefits, AIPH has extended the entry deadline to 19th October 2025, giving more cities the opportunity to showcase their excellence on a truly global stage.

Initiated by AIPH and supported by its network of Green City Partners, the AIPH World Green City Awards champion ambitious nature-orientated approaches to city design and operation. Cities around the world are encouraged to enter the Awards to showcase their achievement and commitment to plants and nature for providing solutions to address major challenges facing urban environments.

This collaboration with RICL will leverage the Lab's expertise in natural infrastructure for urban resilience and climate adaptation to strengthen the impact of the Awards. The Lab’s extensive evidence base on the benefits and successful implementation of urban greening will offer a deeper evaluation of entries into the Awards, helping to celebrate initiatives that beautify cities and build sustainable, fair, and resilient futures for all residents.

"We are thrilled to welcome the Resilient and Inclusive Cities Lab as our partner. Their work aligns with our mission to champion the power of plants to create healthier, more prosperous cities. This partnership will help us to inspire urban leaders around the world to adopt strategies that are both environmentally sound and socially equitable."

- Tim Briercliffe, Secretary General, AIPH

Cities that enter the Awards will now benefit from RICL’s expertise. Through the partnership, RICL and AIPH will provide feedback on each entry, highlighting the strengths of the initiative and identifying areas for improvement to further benefit the city. There is also scope for entrants to participate in capacity-building services, helping them  integrate living green more effectively into urban infrastructure and deliver lasting improvements to cities, people, and the planet.

“Our expertise in geospatial modelling and social science enables us to provide data-driven feedback to enhance the AIPH World Green City Awards. With this partnership, we strive to empower cities, helping them build more resilient and inclusive communities.”

- Assistant Prof Perrine Hamel, RICL

The AIPH World Green City Awards 2026 comprise seven categories which acknowledge the efforts of cities to address common urban issues. Three Finalists for each category are selected by a Technical Panel of urban greening experts. From this list of Finalists, an international Jury decides on the winners. Of the seven category winners, only one will be named Grand Winner of the AIPH World Green City Awards 2026.

Entries for the Awards will remain open until 19th October 2025. Cities large and small are invited to enter their initiatives online.

Hot July leads to sales heating up at UK Garden Centres

Latest data from the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) August Market Update reveals steady growth, with overall revenue up +4% compared to July 2024 and July 2023...

July 2025 was officially the UK’s fifth hottest July on record, with temperatures averaging 16.8°C. As the weather warmed across the country, so too did sales at UK Garden Centres. Latest data from the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) August Market Update reveals steady growth, with overall revenue up +4% compared to July 2024 and July 2023.

Total transactions for July reached a three-year high, with transactions up +4% from the same period last year. However, the average spend remained steady at £26.37 (excluding VAT), indicating increased footfall rather than higher individual spending.

Gardening product sales remained largely stable, with revenue increasing by +4% compared to July 2024. While garden furniture was the main driver of growth, soaring by +42% from a relatively weaker July 2024, outdoor plant sales struggled due to dry conditions and water restrictions in parts of the UK.

An overall steady July means garden centre year-to-date performance remains strong, with total revenues +10% ahead of last year and 2023. Similar performance in the coming months will be required to maintain the current lead over previous years, with the results of HTA’s Q2 2025 Business Barometer also highlighting how higher operating costs are squeezing profits.

The data, which covers the period up to the end of June, captures sentiment and performance across all HTA and Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) members, including retailers, growers, landscapers, and manufacturers. It reveals that members performed broadly in line with expectations against their budgets. On average, members were only -0.1% behind sales budget and -0.5% behind profit budget, with two-thirds (65%) of respondents meeting or exceeding their profit expectations.

The HTA’s modelling shows that with rising business costs, not accounting for any new provisions needing to be made to cover Inheritance Tax liabilities, an example £2m turnover garden centre would need to see an 11% increase in sales to maintain operating profit margins.  Most impacted are the APL members, who face particularly challenging conditions, averaging -7% behind budgeted sales at the end of Q2 2025, as consumers restricted spending on high-value projects.

Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the HTA, commented: “July continued to be an encouraging month for our sector, the weather has helped garden centres build on strong spring sales, with particular growth in sales of garden furniture.

“Non-gardening departments also continued their strong momentum throughout 2025 with indoor living and homewares posting the most substantial gains. Catering sales also grew, with garden centre cafes and restaurants displaying strong growth year-on-year. Our Q2 Business Barometer also shows that retailers with catering were outperforming their expected profit at the end of Q2 by a larger margin than retailers without catering.

“Other insights from the Q2 Business Barometer reveal short-term and medium-term business outlooks for retailers, growers, manufacturers, and suppliers were broadly level with Q1 - after the sector somewhat recovered from the end of 2024; but remain low in historic terms.

“On a more optimistic note, long-term business outlooks rose considerably for a second consecutive quarter to their highest level since Q1 2024, despite the Autumn Budget changes coming into effect and the continued uncertainty surrounding the global economy. The strong retail sales across spring 2025 will have offset some of these cost pressures and helped contribute to the positive outlook.

“In the meantime, we know that the prolonged dry and hot weather will bring some challenges, particularly to businesses in drought areas and for our members operating in areas with temporary use bans (TUBs) in place. We continue to monitor the impact of these conditions and are actively engaged in regional water strategies as well as attending the Environment Agency’s National Drought Group. We also have more advice and guidance on water resilience available on our website hta.org.uk/water.”

Consumer confidence dropped slightly by 1 point to -19 in July, remaining broadly stable with recent months. A 7-point increase in the savings index indicates that consumers believe their spending power will constrict in the coming months.

HTA members can access further insights in this month’s Market Update and Q2 Business Barometer on our website.
