Frank P Matthews Trees has launched a new commemorative apple tree, ‘Legacy’, for the forthcoming season, marking its 125th anniversary while supporting the work of the National Garden Scheme.
As part of its milestone anniversary celebrations, the fourth-generation, family-run Worcestershire nursery is introducing ‘Legacy’, a special commemorative apple tree that combines exceptional garden performance with a unique charitable partnership. A competition to name the new apple was held in March, attracting over 300 entries.
Developed to mark the nursery’s remarkable heritage, ‘Legacy’ has been released in collaboration with the National Garden Scheme, which will celebrate its centenary in 2027. A donation from every tree sold will support the charity’s work.

Adding further significance to the launch, the commemorative tree was grafted by Andrew Wright shortly before his retirement after 40 years with the business, making ‘Legacy’ a fitting tribute to both the company’s history and the people behind its success.
‘Legacy’ offers gardeners a combination of desirable characteristics, including crunchy, sweet and aromatic fruit, excellent disease resistance, and a particularly unusual feature: the apples remain on the tree until mid-January. This allows gardeners to enjoy fresh fruit directly from the tree throughout much of the winter season. Any remaining fruit can also provide a valuable food source for wildlife, including winter birds such as fieldfares.
Steph Dunn James of Frank P Matthews Trees said: “’Legacy’ perfectly captures what our anniversary year is all about – celebrating our heritage while looking to the future. Partnering with the National Garden Scheme and recognising Andrew Wright’s contribution makes this a truly special tree, and we’re delighted to offer gardeners an apple that combines outstanding flavour, resilience and winter interest.”
‘Legacy’ will be available for the 2026/27 planting season through Frank P Matthews Trees and selected retail partners.
