James Barnes will step down from his position as Chairman at the Horticultural Trades Association at the next Annual General Meeting in September, marking the end of his tenure, which began in 2019.

A long-standing and respected champion of the environmental horticulture sector, James Barnes has been a driving force at the HTA, bringing over 25 years of invaluable business experience to the role. Working with the President, the CEO and the Board, James has played a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of the HTA and promoting the interests of its members.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, James provided robust leadership, achieving the reopening of garden centres. His efforts ensured continued support for HTA members and contributed to the survival of many businesses, instilling a sense of reassurance in the industry's future as well as encouraging a new wave of gardeners to appreciate their own piece of green space. James has also played an active role in growing HTA’s voice with policymakers and the media on a range of issues, whether on a sustainable transition to peat-free gardening or borders and trade policy.

Under James’ guidance, the senior leadership team at the HTA has been bolstered with the introduction of a CEO and new director roles who are effectively delivering a new strategy and value for members. We are all incredibly grateful for his dedication and guidance."
