Students dig deep to breathe new life into community

Eight new trees were professionally planted by Brimsmore Gardens on Stilby Road in Yeovil, as part of a new community project led by Westfield Community Association.
The resident-run group, which is working to improve local communal green space, also enlisted the help of six Year 8 and 9 students from Westfield Academy, who all helped dig, plant and secure the trees on the plot, just up the road from their school.
Dinah Davies from Westfield Community Association, said; “We are very grateful to Adam and the team at Brimsmore Gardens for their generosity towards this community project. It’s been a great few months, as throughout autumn we have made a start on planting spring bulbs, wildflower seeds and trees at some of the 42 identified plots in the area, with the help of our wonderful Green Space Invaders from Westfield Academy. Going forward, the students will maintain the plots, and we really hope that the local community will feel a sense of pride in their new surroundings and enjoy watching the new plants blossom, grow and change throughout the seasons.”
Adam Wallis, manager of Brimsmore Gardens, added, “This is such a fantastic initiative and one we are really proud to support. Anything that gets the community, especially the younger generation, interested in gardening and understanding what a positive impact beautiful green spaces have on our wellbeing, as well as wildlife, is something to be championed. The students from Westfield Academy were brilliant, they braved the cold weather and were eager to get stuck in with the tree planting. We really hope they enjoy looking after the trees, and we’ll be happy to offer tips and advice along the way.”
