Brimsmore Gardens selected for ground-breaking compost bag recycling trial

Brimsmore Gardens in Yeovil is one of 80 garden centres in the UK to have been selected by Evergreen Garden Care to take part in a trial it is running in collaboration with Veolia PROcycle, to recycle used compost bags and turn them into new compost bags.

With an Evergreen Garden Care PROcycle Compost Bag Collection Scheme point now installed, Brimsmore Gardens is urging customers to return their plastic compost, soil and bark bags to the garden centre, in the process stopping them from ending up on landfill.

Since it was rolled out across the UK in June 2022, the scheme has already seen 3-tonnes of compost bags diverted from landfill and turned into garden furniture and recycled bin bags. The aim is to recycle enough bags to achieve a 3% reduction in the amount ending up on landfill by 2024.

Adam Wallis, manager of Brimsmore Gardens, explains: “Compost bags are notoriously difficult to recycle, so this is a really exciting development. Our own initiative to reuse returned compost bags in store has been really successful, so I am confident that this will be another well-received offering for the local community. It will help everyone to reduce their waste and demonstrate how gardening can be a force for good when it comes to people and planet.”
