Frank P Matthew’s Prunus Sumaura Fugenzo JAPANESE LANTERN has received the prestigious Best in Show at the Horticultural Trades Association New Plant Awards, sponsored by the Royal Horticultural Society, during this year’s HTA National Plant Show, taking place today and tomorrow (18 and 19 June) at the NAEC in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire.
Prunus Sumaura Fugenzo JAPANESE LANTERN clinched the top prize in the Trees category. This remarkable tree features fragrant cherry blossoms that attract bees. The Prunus ‘Fugenzo’ was first discovered in Suma-ura Park in Kobe, Japan, in 1990. The winning tree, while similar to the original, boasts unique flower colours and forms among all Sakura cherries. It showcases stunning, densely double-frilled flowers with white, pink, and green petals that deepen in colour as they age. This medium-sized, spreading tree has bronze young leaves that mature to green and display vibrant autumn colours. It’s an exceptional garden performer, thriving across all regions of the UK and in a variety of soil types, except those that are heavily waterlogged.
The new plant area at the HTA National Plant Show is bursting with ideas for new plants. This year, there has been a record number of 137 qualifying judged entries, the highest ever. Awards are given to the most innovative and exceptional plant varieties launched in the past year.
Emma Allen, RHS Head of Horticultural Relations and Awards judge, commented: “I am delighted that the winner is the Prunus Japanese Lantern, entered by Frank P. Matthews. It’s a remarkable breakthrough in blossom colour, starting with a beautiful greenish apple hue and a double flower that gradually transitions to white and then features a pink streak in the centre before becoming fully pink at the end. It's truly an amazing plant, and I believe the best plant won. I’m very happy."
Pippa Greenwood, HTA Horticulture Manager, said: “The 2025 HTA New Plant Awards were nothing short of extraordinary, with a record-breaking number of entries pre-judging – around 150 – making it our biggest year yet. What made it even more special was the incredible diversity across all categories, from houseplants and bedding to trees, shrubs, climbers and more. The quality was outstanding throughout – a real testament to the innovation and skill of UK growers.
“Our judging panel, specially chosen to reflect a wide range of expertise and geographical regions, had a real challenge on their hands. That regional spread is so important because every plant awarded, whether bronze, silver, or gold, needs to have real potential to thrive in gardens across the country.
“It’s been a genuinely exciting year, and we’ve never seen quite so many fantastic new plants gathered together in one place – a real treat for gardeners and the industry alike.”
Alan Down, HTA Immediate Past President and Down to Earth, added: “I'm absolutely delighted to see so many entries, such innovation, such really exciting plants. In fact, I wanted to take them all home and put them in my garden!"
Stephanie Dunn James, Director from Frank P Matthews, said: "We’re absolutely thrilled to win Best in Show at the New Plant Awards here at the HTA National Plant Show this year. We knew Prunus Sumaura Fugenzo JAPANESE LANTERN was a good variety. It’s such a special flowering cherry, with multiple colours on one tree. I’m especially thrilled for my Dad, as this is a variety he nurtured and cultivated. The whole team will be delighted.”
The winners
Annuals, Tender Perennials:
Beekenkamp Plants - LaBella Dahlia Grande Chocolate Rose
Cacti & Succulents:
Javado UK - Cotyledon Green Footprint

This year’s judging panel includes Emma Allen, RHS Head of Horticultural Relations and Cath Quinney, Bennybeg Plant Centre and sees a first year judging for Alan Down, HTA Immediate Past President and Down to Earth, Anisa Gress, Potting Shed Press and Liam Cleary, YPHA Committee Member and Old Railway Line Garden Centre. Pippa Greenwood, the HTA’s Horticulture Manager and Martin Simmons, HTA Member Engagement Manager oversee the panel. All entries are verified ahead of judging by Joy of Plants.
The judging process is thorough and based on a comprehensive set of criteria, including:
- Aesthetic appeal
- Commercial viability
- Adaptability to various growing conditions
- Unique to market
Awards presented include Bronze, Silver, Gold, Best in Category, and Best in Show. Receiving a New Plant Award is a prestigious honour that brings significant recognition and publicity to both the plant and its creators.
In addition to the formal awards announcement, a dedicated seminar highlighted the winning plants with the judging panel discussing the key features and benefits of each winning entry and how they can support increased plant sales.

Squire’s Garden Centres has appointed two new executive directors and two new non-executive directors to its board, reinforcing the company’s long-standing commitment to strong leadership, retail expertise and its core horticultural values.
Ricky Bowness has been promoted to Retail Buying Director, following his most recent role as Group Purchasing Manager. Ricky joined Squire’s in 2010 with a decade of experience in the horticultural sector. He has since managed several garden centres within the group, including Woking, West Horsley and Milford, before transitioning into a senior head office role in 2024.
Ricky holds a degree in Landscape Management from the University of Reading and is a Chartered Accountant. His broad expertise in operations, combined with deep sector knowledge and commercial insight, will further strengthen Squire’s strategic buying capabilities across its estate.
Ross McEwan has been appointed to the role of Retail Operations Director. Ross began his journey with Squire’s in 1996 as a weekend assistant and has gone on to build an impressive career in garden retail. A graduate in Horticulture from Writtle College, Ross has managed multiple Squire’s centres and held senior roles at the Royal Horticultural Society, where he led key retail design and development projects, including at RHS Garden Wisley.
Ross returned to Squire’s in 2020, bringing his strong retail background and a wealth of insight of retail operations, launching the business’ e-commerce presence as well as spearheading the company’s sustainability strategy. His appointment marks a key step in further shaping the future customer experience at Squire’s.
In addition to the two executive director appointments, Squire’s has also appointed two non-executive directors from within the founding family. Elizabeth Squire and Mark Cody have joined the board, contributing external perspectives and supporting the company’s long-term development. Elizabeth, sister of Chairman, Sarah Squire, is a former Royal Navy officer now working in the technology sector. Nephew of Colin Squire, Mark is Managing Director of the international operations of a large US-based insurance broker.
Sarah Squire, Chairman - Squire’s Garden Centres, comments: “I am so pleased to welcome our new directors to the Board. Ross and Ricky both have strong experience with our company as it has grown, as well as in-depth knowledge of the industry. They are extremely capable and very much in tune with our values. I am confident they will make a hugely significant contribution to our business in their new capacity as directors and I am delighted that they are joining the Board.
“The appointment of Elizabeth and Mark demonstrates the ongoing commitment of the family to the success of our company. They bring their experience from other sectors and will challenge our thinking and promote healthy discussion.
“As we look ahead to the 90th anniversary of our company in 2026, and with the appointment of our new Managing Director, Sam Dickson, joining us in late June, these board changes mark an important step in shaping the future of our business. They bring fresh perspectives and additional expertise, while ensuring we remain firmly rooted in the values and heritage that define Squire’s.”
The appointments mark a natural step in the ongoing progression of the Surrey-based, family-owned business, which operates 17 garden centres and two nurseries across the South East and has been a trusted name in horticulture for almost nine decades.

Nature’s Lawn creates new retail opportunities

As consumers continue their quest to transform unassuming outdoor buildings into things of beauty with living roofs, Nature’s Lawn from Johnsons Lawn Seed offers the ultimate solution, helping garden retailers to tap into this continued trend.
Generating opportunities beyond lawncare, Nature’s Lawn is an innovative seed mix that combines slow-growing grasses with native wildflowers; ideal for giving any boring outdoor building a facelift by creating a luscious green roof with all the ecological benefits of a thriving wildflower meadow.
Not just a pretty view
More than just a beautiful aesthetic, the popular trend for creating green spaces on the roofs of outdoor buildings, such as bin and bike stores – and even the traditional garden shed – is also born out of a renewed interest in supporting wildlife.
Consumers are more aware of environmental factors and value the role pollinators play in our ecosystem, which is why they are actively seeking new ways to garden in harmony with nature, trying to ‘do their bit’ even if they don’t have a large lawn or garden to play with.
Green roofs are the perfect way to for gardeners to improve their view and increase biodiversity in their outdoor space at the same time. Bin stores with integrated roof planters are now widely available to buy, whilst a quick search online brings up a wealth of ‘how to’ tutorials on how to build your own wooden frame to top any outdoor building, making it easily accessible for consumers with any budget or skill level.
Easy to maintain
Garden retailers can support customers with their living roof ambitions by providing easy pick-up products and inspiring them to go for something more inviting than sedum on a roll, adding interest with their own aerial low-maintenance wildflower meadow. Nature's Lawn boasts a carefully selected blend of slow-growing grasses and UK-native perennial wildflowers that can tolerate regular mowing or cutting. The seed mix attracts pollinators, like butterflies and bees while maintaining a beautiful blooming and rooftop lawn.
One of the standout features of Nature's Lawn is the freedom to choose the desired cutting height, ranging from 50mm to 150mm. By trimming less frequently or leaving the grass slightly longer, users can create ideal conditions for the wildflowers to thrive and, because the lawn is designed to remain manageable and aesthetically pleasing without growing too tall, gardeners won’t feel overrun. All of this spells great news for the environment and means less maintenance for your customers.
The wildflowers will self-seed over time, gradually increasing their presence and enhancing the overall natural beauty of the rooftop lawn, keeping pollinators coming back for more.
The inclusion of slow-growing grasses like Strong Creeping Red Fescue, Chewings Fescue, and Hard Fescue ensures a durable and resilient raised lawn that will do well in full sun or shade, with little effort.
Guy Jenkins, Consumer Manager at Johnsons Lawn Seed said: “At Johnsons, we are always looking to create new and exciting opportunities for retailers. Our innovative Nature’s Lawn with Mowable Native Wildflowers allows gardeners to think differently about their lawns and get more creative. We know living roofs are a wonderful trend to help improve biodiversity in outdoor spaces, so why not do that with grass and native wildflowers? Our innovative seed mix can help create a beautiful, low-maintenance rooftop garden that works in harmony with nature and that your customers will love. It’s an easy way for them to help pollinators thrive, bring colour to their outdoor space, and transform a nondescript, functional outdoor building into a thing of beauty. It’s a win/win, particularly as it has potential to increase basket spend.”
Nature’s Lawn is offered in 400g cartons with an RRP of £12.99.

Scotsdales in Cambridge opened their new 480 seater Greenhouse Café this week. “Wow” and “This really is going out for a treat” were comments from customers seeing the new restaurant when GTN Xtra visited on Saturday.
With three distinct seating areas; the Library, the Greenhouse and a large family and children’s area, plus a dog friendly seating area, the new restaurant has a palatial ambience that customers are really enjoying.
As well as opening a new restaurant, with much larger kitchen facilities “we can now bake our own bread” the Scotsdales team have also been the first centre to go live with app ordering with their Epos supplier Davidson Richards.

Scotsdales Managing Director, Caroline Owen, explained that the new café was originally planned to happen in 2021/2022 but got postponed due to Covid “I’m so pleased with the way it has worked out and all of the tea have been fantastic in rising to the new challenge.”
See GTN Xtra’s photo tour of the new Greenhouse Café below, plus a few photos of the centre now that phase 2 of the redevelopment is open. Phase three, the move of Houseplants into the old Sunflower Café area and the expansion of the Food Hall will open in September 2025.

Lawn care brand Grass Gains enjoyed a highly successful appearance at this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live, engaging with hundreds of consumers and receiving overwhelming praise for its practical, performance-driven product range.
Throughout the four-day show, the Grass Gains team spoke directly with gardeners of all experience levels, gaining valuable insights into the common frustrations with traditional lawn care products, from overly complicated application methods to inconsistent results and the all-too-frequent issue of scorched lawns.
Unlike many mass-market solutions developed in laboratories far removed from real-world conditions, Grass Gains’ products are designed by lawn care professionals who actively work on lawns, pitches, and sports surfaces. That real-world expertise resonated strongly with consumers at the show, who were drawn to the brand’s clear messaging, practical formats, and emphasis on results without compromise.
"We had a fantastic few days at BBC Gardeners’ World Live," said Steve Harper, Managing Director at Grass Gains. "It was hugely rewarding to speak with so many passionate gardeners and hear firsthand about their lawn care challenges. What stood out is how many people are disappointed by traditional products that just don’t deliver or worse, damage their lawns. The response to what we’re doing at Grass Gains was incredibly positive. The show was a real success in terms of both sales and brand engagement, and it's become a key fixture in our calendar. We see direct consumer communication as a central plank of our strategy going forward."
Grass Gains’ appearance at the show also highlighted the brand’s growing consumer following and continued momentum in the lawn care market. With further innovations planned for 2026 and a commitment to demystifying lawn care for today’s gardeners, the brand is cementing its position as a trusted, results-focused alternative for those seeking expert-led lawn solutions.

To mark an incredible 60 years at the helm of Durston Garden Products, Managing Director Chris Durston celebrated in style – strapped to the top wing of a biplane!
On Friday 30th May, Chris took to the skies at Henstridge Airfield, Templecombe, Somerset for a thrilling wing walk, proving that even in his late 70s, he remains full of energy and passion for life, business, and adventure.
This daring feat marked six decades of dedication to the family-run business, which has grown from a small Somerset farm into one of the UK’s most respected suppliers of growing media. From milking cows to pioneering peat-free compost innovation, Chris’s career has been defined by vision, hard work and a dash of daring – so it came as no surprise that he celebrated with his feet off the ground!
While Chris enjoyed the adrenaline rush, his charitable spirit remained firmly grounded. In honour of the occasion, he generously donated £250 to the Greenfingers Charity, which creates magical gardens for children in hospices across the UK.
Reflecting on the milestone, Chris said: "Sixty years at Durstons has flown by, so what better way to celebrate than flying through the air myself! It’s been a privilege to grow the business with my family and colleagues, and I’m pleased this celebration could also help support the brilliant work of Greenfingers."
Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising and Communications at the Greenfingers Charity, added: "We’re so grateful to Chris for thinking of Greenfingers at such a special moment in his life. His generosity will help us continue creating much-needed, life-enhancing gardens for life-limited children and their families. Congratulations to Chris on 60 remarkable years, what a way to celebrate!"

Planters garden centres celebrated 35 years with an anniversary party for 470 staff and family from 5 centres 5 restaurants and the nursery attended.
Guests enjoyed a circus, hog roast, dodgems and a ferris wheel in the grounds of Planters Tamworth.
Presentations were made to 93 staff who had served more than 10 years service.
Gerald Planter said “35 years ago the Planters site here would have looked very much different. In fact the whole garden centre was not much larger than this big top. And the building not much larger than this circus ring.
“35 years later we have 5 wonderful garden centres, 5 fantastic restaurants, 3 marvellous card shops and a thriving nursery.
“You are the real stars of the show, you’ve done the equivalent of jumping through hoops of fire, you’ve swung on the trapeze and juggled a 100 balls all to deliver great customer care and experience.”
See photos from the party below.
Geralds speech from the party in full:
“Firstly, thank you to Christine and Bethany for organising tonight. As always, they’ve made a superb job. And also Thank you to our son Matthew, Tom, Bethanys boyfriend and Emma, Matthews girlfriend for helping tonight and lending plenty of support not just tonight but over the last 4 years since our last party.
“We also want to say thank you to all our extended family for their support and help over the 35 years, we could not have achieved what we have without it.
“35 years ago the Planters site here would have looked very much different. In fact the whole garden centre was not much larger than this big top. And the building not much larger than this circus ring.
“35 years later we have 5 wonderful garden centres, 5 fantastic restaurants, 3 marvellous card shops and a thriving nursery.
“As many of you know we have just been audited by the Garden Centre Association and I’m confident our member garden centres will be at the very Top of the UKs Garden Centres. And not only that but at the top for growth too. A big well done and thank you from us.
“So you are the real stars of the show, you’ve done the equivalent of jumping through hoops of fire, you’ve swung on the trapeze and juggled a 100 balls all to deliver great customer care and experience.
“Like us you should be very proud of all your achievements.
“So tonight is a big thank you from us.
“We just want to say a special welcome to our teams from Brookfields and Pacific. Welcome to the Planters family. I know change isn’t always easy but you’ve risen to the challenge and delivered great things already and this is just the start of the journey.
“Now for the really nice bit, we have 93 staff who have worked in the businesses for more than 10 years and in some cases over 35 years. We really do owe you a lot and as a token of our appreciation we would like you to come up and collect from Christine, Matthew and Bethany a little gift.
“Also, for those of you that have been with us for more than 5 years there will be a small bonus in your June pay-packet.”

Greenfingers Charity founder, Richard Jackson, awarded MBE for charitable services to children’s hospices

Richard Jackson, Founder President of Greenfingers Charity and a passionate advocate for the gardening industry, has been awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours for his outstanding charitable work. Richard Jackson, Founder President of Greenfingers Charity and a passionate advocate for the gardening industry, has been awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours for his outstanding charitable work. The honour comes at a particularly poignant time, as the Greenfingers Charity celebrates its 25th anniversary – a milestone he marked at this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live, the very event where the charity was officially launched in 1999.
The King’s Honours list recognises individuals who have made exceptional contributions to society, with awards such as MBEs (Member of the Order of the British Empire) presented for achievements in public life and dedication to service. Published twice a year – at New Year and on the King’s official birthday in June – the honours celebrate the unsung heroes whose efforts make a significant difference in their communities.
There is little doubt as to why Richard has been so deserving of the honour bestowed upon him. In 1998, with a vision of uniting the horticultural industry behind a common cause – to create magical, therapeutic gardens for children’s hospices across the UK – he founded the Greenfingers Charity. Over the last two and half decades the charity has grown exponentially, and has now designed and delivered over 70 inspirational outdoor spaces, bringing comfort, joy and precious moments to hundreds of life-limited children and their families.
In addition to founding Greenfingers, Richard remains a steadfast supporter of the gardening sector. In 2006, he was instrumental in establishing the annual Garden Press Event, now a key date in the industry calendar, connecting gardening brands and media to champion new products and innovation.
Reflecting on his MBE, Richard Jackson said: "I am truly humbled and honoured to receive this recognition. The Greenfingers Charity has always been about the industry coming together to make a real difference to the lives of children with life-limiting conditions. This award is a reflection of everyone who has supported the charity over the years – from our volunteers to the garden designers, hospice staff, sponsors and fundraisers. I share this with them all."
Boyd Douglas-Davies, Chair of the Greenfingers Charity, added: "Richard’s vision and passion created something incredibly special with Greenfingers. For 25 years, his tireless commitment has ensured that children and families facing the most difficult of circumstances can enjoy peace, beauty and happiness in a garden designed just for them. We are thrilled to see his efforts recognised in such a prestigious way. It’s a wonderful tribute and so well deserved."

Scottish garden designer, Rachel Bailey, has scooped Best Show Garden and a Platinum award at BBC Gardeners’ World Live. The winning design, Where There’s Water, There’s Life, highlights the vital link between water, plants, people and nature, and showcases innovative design features that slow water flow and conserve resources, all set in a stunning garden landscape.
Gardening expert, writer and broadcaster, David Hurrion, announced the accolade following rigorous assessment by a panel of internationally acclaimed, multi award-winning garden and landscape designers. 90,000 plant-loving visitors will get a close-up view of BBC Gardeners’ World Live’s extensive collection of show gardens, floral displays and Beautiful Borders, picking up inspiration and ideas along the way.
Rachel Bailey’s award-winning garden celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) and demonstrates how thoughtful landscaping can sustain life, promote biodiversity and create beautiful, functional outdoor spaces. Highlights include a rain garden, a decked walkway elevated over a pond, and a green roofed pergola covering a decked seating area.
BBC Gardeners’ World events are keen supporters of the talent, technical skills and teamwork of professional landscaping teams, and there where were double celebrations when the garden’s landscape team, Design It Landscapes from the West Midlands, won the Best Construction Landscaper award.
Show Garden assessment panel Chair, Roger Platts, the award-winning garden designer and horticultural expert, said: “In every area, this garden excels. The design, construction, landscaping and planting are of a very high standard and the garden has a lovely ambience. It demonstrates water collection and the green roof pergola is both imaginative and practical. There were some real moments of joy for the assessors as we discovered examples of the team’s attention to detail. I’m thrilled that visitors will see an exceptional garden which showcases the standards and skills that the APL demands of its member companies.”
On winning the Best Show Garden award, Rachel Bailey said: “This is an amazing result for our team, I’m thrilled. It shows what can be achieved when professional designers and landscapers work together from concept stage to bringing a garden to life. I’m grateful to the Association of Professional Landscapers and Society of Garden Designers for their support.”
Dan Ryan from Design It Landscapes said: “It’s a great thing to have achieved this for the APL and for Rachel. We’ve had a great team of APL member companies and suppliers providing behind the scenes support.”
Phil Tremayne, General Manager of the Association of Professional Landscapers said: “This 30th Anniversary Garden has blown us away and I’m thrilled to bits with this award. Collaboration between professional designers and landscapers is something we promote at the APL and we’ve had some great support with the garden from APL members.”
This year’s headline Show Garden is BBC Gardeners’ World presenter and designer Nick Bailey’s The Plant-Based Garden. Nick’s sustainable design ethos swaps plastic, concrete and other human-made materials for natural alternatives. The Plant-Based Garden is the centrepiece of this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Make a Metre Campaign, designed to encourage people to transform one metre of outdoor space to support the planet. From pollinator patches to veg plots, miniature ponds to creative compost heaps, more than 10,000 campaign metres have already been pledged at GardenersWorld.com. Nick’s headline garden features a host of achievable one metre spaces, all designed to inspire visitors to join in at home.
Best Showcase Garden
Continuing the top awards at BBC Gardeners’ World Live, winner of Best Showcase Garden and a Platinum award was Just a Garden … by Derbyshire designer, Carleen Osborne. This pollinator friendly garden is inspired by the designer’s love for plants and the belief that gardening should be achievable and sustainable. Its planting is tailored to local microclimates whilst leaf litter, a log pile and hedge offer shelter for small mammals and amphibians.
Chair of the Showcase Garden assessors, David Stevens, the internationally acclaimed garden designer, said: “We were impressed by this very cool, contemporary garden with its elegant upcycled features and a distinctive zigzag pattern that made it appear bigger. The shape, texture and form of the planting brought the garden alive, treating flower as a bonus. The use of leaf mulch in the shady side looked particularly beautiful. This was a fantastic result, created on a minimal budget.”
Carleen Osborne said: “I’m blown away to have won this award. Nick, my husband, and I are the perfect team and we’ve created a beautiful garden with lots of takeaway ideas to inspire gardeners. We’ve felt real satisfaction and joy from making aspects of the garden, like the screens, decking and furniture, and from planting together.”
Best Beautiful Border
BBC Gardeners’ World Live’s ever-popular Beautiful Borders offer inspiration for small garden spaces and challenging places. Creative designers from across the UK have packed these tiny plots with big ideas, all inspired by the theme of ‘Cultivating Connections’.
The winner of Best Beautiful Border and a Platinum award was North Yorkshire garden designer, Anita Rose, for The One to Three Border. The garden is designed to foster connections between oneself, other people and nature. Seating for three encourages reflection, a seat for two invites shared moments, and a single seat under a tree offers quiet contemplation. Its message is that it’s easy as 1,2,3 for visitors to replicate its look in their own gardens to cultivate calm and connection.
Co-Chair of Assessors for the Beautiful Borders, Ian Hodgson, said: “This was a Border with incisive and sensitive design, effective use of space, strong visual elements and exquisite planting. It was a potent interpretation of the Cultivating Connections theme.”
Anita Rose said: “It means so much to have won the Best Border award and I feel lucky to have been able to take part. It’s been an amazing experience, I’ve learnt so much and met so many lovely people that have supported each other.”
Best BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Subscriber Border and a Gold award went to first-time garden designer Ellen Tozer from We Say Grow in Bristol. Ellen’s design, The Golden Hour, is a restful space to reconnect and escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. Inspired by the golden hours of sunrise and sunset, it features warm, earthy tones in flowers and foliage with relaxing amber and orange hues. Wild, loose planting encourages a carefree, informal approach
Ellen Tozer said: “I’m really honoured to win this award for my first ever garden design, it’s been great fun to put together.”
Best Interpretation of the Theme and a Silver Merit award went to Jan O’Brien from Lancashire for Willow Moments and Memories, inspired by the work of Willow, a charity providing special days for seriously ill young adults. Jan is a beneficiary of Willow’s support and her Border features a river of memories with everlasting flowers, leading to a tranquil spot by a willow tree.
Jan O’Brien said: “I’m a first-time garden designer and only submitted my entry at the last minute so it feels incredible to have won this award after so many months of hard work. As a beneficiary, Willow is close to my heart so it’s wonderful to be able to give it a voice.”
Nine of this year’s Beautiful Borders were designed by members of Working for Gardeners Association, a charity that provides horticultural skills training through its Work and Retrain As a Gardener Scheme (WRAGs). Winner of Best WFGA Border and a Platinum award was Isabel Sabine from Winchester for Apple Core Values which explores how neighbours can create mini orchards in small gardens, fostering community spirit through planning, selecting apple varieties and sharing recipes and apple juice.
Isabel Sabine said: “I’m overwhelmed by the award and very grateful to the WFGA for the opportunity to create this garden. It’s been an amazing experience.”
Last night’s awards were presented at the Hillier-sponsored Let’s Talk Plants Stage in the BBC Gardeners’ World Live Floral Marquee, sponsored by L&G. Peter Beales Roses have been awarded a prestigious Gold Medal at BBC Gardeners’ World Live 2025. This achievement marks their second Gold Medal of the year, following their celebrated success at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025.
Designed by Rosarian’s Mat Nicholas & Rosie Rosher, this year’s award-winning exhibit puts a spotlight on the essential role that roses can play in sustainable, wildlife-friendly garden design. The display features a diverse array of species and heritage roses, complemented by pollinator-attracting companion plants, illustrating how ornamental gardening can also support biodiversity.

Incorporating bird feeders, insect habitats, and a fresh water source, the garden demonstrates practical ways to create inviting sanctuaries for birds, bees, butterflies, and other beneficial wildlife. Towering rose varieties such as Chevy Chase, trained over arches provide vertical interest and natural shelter, further enhancing the ecological value of the space.

“We are absolutely delighted to receive a Gold Medal at BBC Gardeners’ World Live,” said Ian Limmer, Nursery Manager. “To win a second Gold this year, following Chelsea, is a tremendous honour for the whole team. Our goal was to showcase the beauty of roses while inspiring gardeners to consider how every garden can support nature.”

The Peter Beales Roses display can be found inside the Floral Marquee throughout the duration of BBC Gardeners’ World Live 2025.

British Garden Centres has announced the exclusive launch of ‘Bountiful Pink’ at this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live. This exciting plant debut marks a significant milestone for both British Garden Centres and the Young People in Horticulture Association (YPHA) and will be available at both the show and selected BGC centres across the UK.
Developed through YPHA’s Launch Success Challenge, ‘Bountiful Pink’ is the result of an innovative programme that brought together ten talented delegates, forming two teams, to compete in developing and launching a brand-new begonia variety. After months of training, mentorship, and hands-on experience, which included trips to Floramedia and Beekenkamp Plants in the Netherlands, the teams’ hard work has finally come to fruition with the plant’s launch at the show.
Both teams gained firsthand insight into marketing, plant breeding, and production during the process. They visited Westland’s growing media production facilities to deepen their understanding of the supply chain and participated in a series of seminars and workshops led by renowned industry experts. These sessions covered essential skills such as product development, market research, branding, photography, and effective communication, culminating in the opportunity to pitch the new plant to key industry professionals.
The winning concept for ‘Bountiful Pink’ was made by the Blue team, made up of Laura McArthur, Leif Mann, Beth Anderson, Jacob Hatch and Molly Parkin.
‘Bountiful Pink’ is a standout begonia bred by Beekenkamp Plants, offering prolific, pure pink blooms and a compact, upright form. Easy to grow and adaptable for both indoor and outdoor settings, it is ideal for gardeners of all experience levels. ‘Bountiful Pink’ will thrive in borders, pots, window boxes, or indoors as a houseplant, requiring minimal maintenance and no staking.
‘Bountiful Pink’ will be launched exclusively and available at selected British Garden Centres stores. This commercial roll-out marks a significant achievement for the YPHA delegates, providing real-world market experience and showcasing the talent and creativity of young professionals in horticulture.

Amy Stubbs, Product & Development Manager at British Garden Centres, said: “We’re incredibly proud to support the launch of ‘Bountiful Pink’ at Gardeners’ World Live and across our British Garden Centres stores. Autumn Fair 2025 set to showcase the power of licensing

The UK’s largest B2B trade show for Home, Gift & Fashion, Autumn Fair, returns to the NEC Birmingham from 7–10 September 2025, facilitating fit-for-business partnerships by bringing 12,000+ buyers and over 800 stockists together to make connections that last...

The UK’s largest B2B trade show for Home, Gift & Fashion, Autumn Fair, returns to the NEC Birmingham from 7–10 September 2025, facilitating fit-for-business partnerships by bringing 12,000+ buyers and over 800 stockists together to make connections that last.
As retail prepares for the crucial golden quarter, Autumn Fair will spotlight the power and profitability of licensing across the gifting, homeware, and fashion sectors. With licensed products continuing to outperform in key categories, this year’s show reflects the growing demand for British-made, purpose-driven, and nostalgia-infused licenses.
The UK gifting market remains resilient, worth over £50 billion annually, with licensed products accounting for a significant share in categories like toys, stationery, greetings, beauty, and collectables. Licensing in home is maturing, not just kids bedding and mugs, but across soft furnishings, wall art, kitchenware, and lighting. Collaborations with heritage brands such as William Morris, Emma Bridgewater, and Sara Miller as well as partnerships with heritage estates, artists, museums, and archives including V&A, National Trust and Kew, are growing in demand across textiles, home fragrance/candles, and tableware.
“Licensed products remain a resilient revenue driver in a challenging market,” says Soraya Gadelrab, Event Director, Autumn Fair. “Retailers are looking for compelling brand stories, lower MOQs, and cross-category flexibility — and that’s exactly what many of our exhibitors will be showcasing this year.”
Chris Workman from the Giftware Association states how important licensing is to the industry, “Licensing and Branding is incredibly important and valuable to the home and giftware industry for all sides of retail involved. From a Gift of the Year perspective, we have seen the Branded Gift category really shift over the years to not just including bigger businesses, but smaller brands realising the fantastic opportunities the licensing world brings - this has really grown the category with a real variety of product collaborations with well know licensees.
“With licensing now having a bigger presence at Spring and Autumn Fair it offers brands looking to invest in the world of licensing a chance to extend into new product categories, reaching new consumers and new territories without major investment or major changes to process. From a retailer and buyer view, licensed products come with built-in brand recognition which can boost sales and consumer trust and well as helping differentiate product offering especially to independent retailers looking to attract in new business.”
Amanda Fergusson, CEO, Greeting Card Association adds, “Licensing plays a key role in the greeting card industry, allowing greeting card publishers to expand their range and see their designs appear on other products. Also, it allows some card designers to concentrate on the designing and work with others who license and publish their designs, similarly licensing allows well-loved characters and brands to appear on cards. With the UK greeting card market valued at over £1.5 billion*, licensed ranges are a key driver of sales across categories. We’re proud that several GCA members will be showcasing their licensed collections at Autumn show.”

Katie Blake Garden Furniture is experiencing a successful season with direct container sales.
Jack Whiteley, the Chairman who has been in the business for over 45 years, expressed his astonishment at how well this season has begun, especially after two previous years of poor sales. He attributes this success primarily to their aggressive pricing of high-quality products, which has allowed retailers to compete effectively with online vendors.
By purchasing direct containers from their factories in the Far East, their massive savings enabled customers to sell high-quality furniture early in the season. Many retailers admitted they did not order enough stock due to the previous years' low sales and sold out very quickly. The attractive offer of buying the first container at the standard price and receiving the second container at half price will be extended into 2026, which Jack noted is a deal that everyone appreciates.
Although Katie Blake will not be exhibiting at the SOLEX exhibition, they will host their own presentation shortly after SOLEX, featuring many exciting new products. They will continue offering the "buy one, get the second at half price" promotion. For next season, all furniture sets will also include an all-weather cover.

Every spring, the University of Leeds bursts into colour with thousands of blooming bulbs – a much-loved signal that the season has arrived. Behind the vibrant display, however, is a budding story of community involvement, digital innovation, and thoughtful planning, brought to life through a creative partnership with Dutch bulb expert JUB Holland.
Known for their long-standing expertise in ornamental bulb cultivation and sustainable landscaping, JUB Holland has developed a powerful digital tool that is helping transform public planting projects across Europe.
The JUB Flower Designer App allows teams to virtually plan and preview how a space will look in full bloom, using real photographs of the location. From parks and verges to university campuses, it is a smart, visual approach that combines precision planting — including for mechanical planting schemes — with greater community engagement.
Community-led design in practice One of the most striking examples of this approach in the United Kingdom is at the University of Leeds, where the Grounds & Gardens team has worked hand in hand with JUB Holland to plant thousands of flower bulbs annually. In 2024, the university took the next step—inviting students and staff to vote on their favourite bulb mix for prominent sites on the Western Campus. Using the Flower Designer App, the community could see how each mix would look in its intended setting, helping them cast an informed vote based not just on names or colours, but a clear visual impression of the end result.
“It’s about giving people a voice in how their shared space looks and feels,” says Sean Craven, External Spaces Manager at the University of Leeds. “The campus is for everyone, and with the Flower Designer App, we’ve been able to offer a real sense of ownership. Staff and students could see the mixes, imagine the space in spring, and help shape it together. That’s a big shift from how things are usually done.”
Smart, visual and efficient planning The app’s process is remarkably intuitive: upload a photo of the planting area, define the space, choose a bulb mix or specific varieties, and the app generates a lifelike preview of the spring display. It is not just a digital gimmick—it is a smart planning tool that has already been used in various mechanical planting projects across the UK. Leeds is among several forward-thinking institutions embracing the app to streamline design decisions and foster deeper involvement from the public.
Job van Eeden, Sales Manager UK at JUB Holland, explains: “At JUB, we’ve always been about more than just bulbs—we’re about creating lasting, meaningful landscapes. The Flower Designer App helps us bring that vision to life in a very real way. Whether we are working with a council, a university, or a park manager, the app allows them to ‘see’ the spring before a single bulb goes in the ground. That is incredibly powerful—and it makes decision-making easier, faster, and more inclusive. This tool is especially useful for mechanical planting projects, where precise planning and timing are key.”
Green vision for a vibrant campus Beyond aesthetics, the impact is tangible. The collaborative process at Leeds has encouraged a sense of pride in place, while the final results have boosted biodiversity. From pollinator-friendly mixtures to native hedgerows and ‘no mow’ zones, the university’s landscape strategy is increasingly aligned with ecological goals. The flower bulb displays in particular have become a vibrant expression of this commitment to sustainable, inclusive green space.
With its commitment to sustainability and biodiversity, the University of Leeds is using its landscape not just to impress, but to inform and inspire. Tools like the Flower Designer App have proven to be valuable assets in turning ideas into well-executed, community-backed planting schemes.

Dobbies Garden Centre has announced the appointment of two new Directors as the business further strengthens its Executive team.

George said: “Over the last few months Dobbies has relaunched two stores, with more to come – to see that level of investment in both the fabric of the stores, and the store teams, is brilliant. I’m really looking forward to playing a key role in driving Dobbies forward and building on the positive developments that have taken place this year.”
Richard is an experienced F&B professional, joining Dobbies from Bourne Leisure, where he led their national food and beverage offering for over four years. Prior to that, he spent nearly 12 years at Pizza Express, latterly as Central Operations and Programme Director.

David adds: “We’d like to thank Nick for his tireless hard work and commitment over the last 12 years. He’s a hugely respected figure in the team, and he’s seen Dobbies through many challenges and successes over the years. We wish him all the best for the future.”

A team of cyclists led by the MD of Yorkshire Garden Centres raised over £4,000 for Martin House Children's Hospice when they tackled a challenging 85 km ride recently
The team of 18 led by Mark Farnsworth completed the challenging, hilly ride that took them through the scenic Yorkshire Wolds villages of Leavening, Birdsall, Kirby Grindalythe and Sledmere.
Mr. Farnsworth explained the rationale for the ride: "For the last few years, we have kicked off the fundraising for our Charity of the Year with a cycle challenge and this year we're delighted to have raised over £4,000 for the great work that Martin House does for babies, children and young people with life-shortening conditions from across West, North and East Yorkshire.
"Thank you to all our friends, family, colleagues and suppliers who have helped us to raise this much money."
Through a series of fund-raising events, collection boxes at the tills and a new ‘Pennies' initiative, the teams at Yorkshire Garden Centres' seven sites hope to raise £30,000 for the Wetherby charity throughout the year.
Chris Verney, Capital Appeal Fundraiser at Martin House, said: "We're delighted that Yorkshire Garden Centres are supporting Martin House again this year, ten years after we were their first charity of the year at Tong, and we're really looking forward to working closely with them to develop this ambitious partnership.
"Their dedication to keeping gardens and homes at the heart resonates strongly with us as we progress with The Build at Martin House, reshaping our gardens and creating the hospice our families deserve. Their support will mean that children and families across the region will continue to receive the vital, specialist care they need, when they need it most."
