UK becoming less dependent on Netherlands for plants and flowers
A ‘state of the nations’ report from the organisers of January’s IPM Essen horticultural trade show says Britain’s dependency on imports of plants and flowers from the Netherlands, is declining.
The report says the Netherlands, which has an 80% share of trade within the EU, feared that Brexit would impact on its role as the hub for the European market. Directly after the British referendum, Dutch sales quantities to Britain, which the report claims imports 90% of its need for plants and flowers, decreased by 5% - and they are still running at 6% to 10% below earlier levels. The weak pound is largely to blame.
The report says new trade relations will need to be set up but many experts agree that Britain would find supplies from elsewhere in the long term.
IPM Essen runs from 23 to 26 January 2018. Click here for further show information.
