Trebaron Blackpool becomes BGC's 60th centre

British Garden Centres have announced today the arrival of the groups 60th garden centre. Trebaron Garden Centre in Lancashire, and team, joined the BGC family on Friday 4th March 2022...

It has been a busy few weeks for the team at British Garden Centres (BGC) with them announcing today the arrival of the groups 60th garden centre. Trebaron Garden Centre in Lancashire, and team, joined the BGC family on Friday 4th March 2022. The centre, just outside Lytham St Annes (on the B5261 to Blackpool), will as with all the centres in the group carry a local name - Lytham St Annes Garden Centre.

Phillippa Stubbs, Director of BGC South said “This is a landmark day for us all. We have known the Withers family for many years and for their centre to be the 60th to join the British Garden Centres family is very special. Over the last few years we have grown our business in the north west through our other centres; Leyland, Townley & Bolton to name a few. Adding Lytham St Annes to the family gives us even more opportunities to serve the local gardeners. We are looking forward to working with the team to develop the business further and build on its heritage.”

Trebaron Garden Centre has developed over the last 40 years into the locals’ favourite garden centre and bistro. Having started life as a Tomato Nursery the site has evolved over the years, and this looks set to continue with BGC investment. Speaking of the sale, Andy Withers – son of the founder – said, “We, at Trebaron, are delighted that the British Garden Centre group is taking over the business. BGC shares our values of service to the local community and I am confident the centre will continue to flourish in the future.”

Lytham St Annes Garden Centre is just 2 miles north of Lytham town centre, 5 minutes from the M55 and 5 miles from the heart of Blackpool.

To work alongside the existing team, Lytham St Annes will be recruiting for a number of additional colleagues, go to www.britishgardencentres.com where full details will be found. As a growing business, in every sense, BGC provides great career opportunities to all skill levels. With 60 garden centres, 2 nurseries and 3 distribution centres the opportunities for progression are numerous.

The Horticultural Trades Association is holding virtual events on Friday (March 4) for retailers and growers on the subject of peat in growing media.

The events are open to all – not just HTA members – and are an opportunity for people to hear about the work of the Growing Media Taskforce and how it is preparing a response to the government consultation on banning peat and what they can do to get involved.

Introduced by HTA Chairman, James Barnes, both events will hear from HTA Director of Research and Insight, David Denny. Representatives from the Growing Media Taskforce, including Neil Bragg from the GMA, will attend both sessions.

Rachel McQuilliam, Media Relations & Communications Manager at the HTA, explained to GTN Xtra: "They’ve been organised to help build awareness of the work the taskforce has been doing and how it plans to respond to the consultation at the same time as ensure that the industry understands where to get support and how to get involved in responding if they wish to do so. Mike Burks and Boyd Douglas-Davies will be at the retailers’ event.

"The response to the consultation is still being written (it’s being compiled for the deadline on 18 March), so I can’t share that with you I’m afraid, but yes, people will be able to ask questions and if they can’t be there they can submit them in advance."

The event for retailers is at 10.30am – you can register to attend here

The event for growers is at 2pm – you can register here.

Timmermans to be called Woodborough Green GC

British Garden Centres is changing the name of Timmermans Garden Centre to Woodborough Green Garden Centre, following its acquisition of the business two weeks ago.

It was announced at the time of the acquisition on February 14 that the centre would be called Epperstone Garden Centre but the now the BGC group has decided on a different name.

Boyd J Douglas-Davies, PR & Communications Director at British Garden Centres, explained: “Having had the opportunity to spend the last week with the wonderful team and customers at Timmermans, the 59th garden centre to join the British Garden Centres family, we have recognised the strong and long association the centre has with the village of Woodborough, Nottinghamshire. Therefore, when we relaunch the centre it will be as Woodborough Green Garden Centre.

“Woodborough, as a continuation of the history and links to the local area - the centre was officially Timmermans of Woodborough. Green, because our passion for plants, gardens and all things green will be evident in everything we do in the years to come.

“We loved the name Epperstone but appreciate the feedback we have had that has brought us to this decision. We look forward to looking after everyone from the surrounding villages and beyond."

Timmermans Garden Centre has developed over the last 30 years in to one of the leading garden centres in Nottinghamshire. In recent years Sophie & Greg Timmermans-Delves have invested in the centre and restaurant. Following an extensive refurbishment programme in 2011 the team went on to be named 2016 Garden Centre of the Year at the Garden Retail and Garden Industry Awards.

Woodborough Green Garden Centre is on the north-east side of Nottingham. Well situated between Nottingham & Newark to serve the area. The 8½ acre site has long been known as an horticultural hotspot having been home to Timmermans Roses for many years – a business dating back to the 1880s.

Peter Seabrook was buried last week in the Churchyard of St Michael's Church on Galleywood Common, Essex, next to his wife Margaret, who passed two years ago.

Many from the horticultural and media world were amongst the 150 strong congregation at the Service of Thanksgiving where Howard Drury described Peter as "the greatest horticulturalist of all time."

At the gathering that followed the committal, RHS President Keith Weed spoke of the incredible influence Peter had on gardening for all.

In lieu of flowers, donations, if wished, be made to the David Colegrave Foundation, supporting the development of students studying horticulture in the UK and Ireland, or to Alzheimer’s Society c/o T Pennack & Sons, 1-3 Maldon Rd, Chelmsford, CM2 7DW.

Equally, Peter's family would be delighted for people to plant a tree (and perhaps upload a virtual plaque to www.queensgreencanopy.org) as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy jubilee celebrations.

HTA launches Guide to Potentially Harmful Plants

The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), working with plant toxicologists and the Veterinary Poisons Information Service, has launched a new Guide to Potentially Harmful Plants...

The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), working with plant toxicologists and the Veterinary Poisons Information Service, has launched a new Guide to Potentially Harmful Plants.

This follows a review of the toxicity of plants sold through nurseries, garden centres and online retailers in the UK. For the first time, the updated guide covers the risk to pets.

Through the UK's horticultural trade, the British public is fortunate to have access to a wealth of plant species. Most of these are harmless. However, there is a risk associated with a small number of plants used in the house and garden, and even some that are grown for food, and this guide has been produced to address that concern. It sets out voluntary guidelines for the labelling of plants (including bulbs and seeds) which will ensure that the public is informed of potentially harmful plants at the point of purchase.

The guide recommends labelling those plants which fulfil the following three conditions:

  • They have been identified as being a significant hazard to humans or pets[1] (not livestock)
  • The toxic parts of the plant are available or produced in the UK
  • The symptoms following ingestion and/or contact can be serious (skin allergies are included, but respiratory and food allergies are not).

Plants are labelled in three categories - A, B and C - according to the severity of the hazard. With the exception of those in category A, the plants in this guide are perfectly safe to purchase as long as the warnings are heeded. However, it is recommended that they are placed or planted where pets and small children are unlikely to have access to brush against or eat them. There are in addition standard labels for loose and pre-packaged ornamental bulbs, and plants with ornamental fruit; while these are considered to have low toxicity, a large ingestion may result in mild symptoms, and bulbs can pose a choking or gastrointestinal obstruction hazard to pets.

While a majority of retailers endeavour to label the plants that they sell, labelling is voluntary. It will also take time for the recommended labels to be adopted while old stock is being used up; a sell-through period reduces plastic waste.

The full list of plants is freely available to view or download on the HTA website https://hta.org.uk/poisonousplants

[1] Pets covered: dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents, tortoises, caged birds, poultry. Where a particular pet is mentioned in the HTA Guide this indicates that type of pet has been adversely affected by a plant; it does not mean that other types of pet will not be affected if they eat or rub against the plant.

Export conference ramps up delegates as overseas interest in UK products rises

The Future for International Trade Conference on March 17th 2022 – organised jointly by Gardenex, PetQuip and BHETA – is signing up growing numbers of delegates as export opportunities return in tune with the easing of Covid travel restrictions...

The Future for International Trade Conference on March 17th 2022 – organised jointly by Gardenex, PetQuip and BHETA – is signing up growing numbers of delegates as export opportunities return in tune with the easing of Covid travel restrictions.

“The post-Brexit challenges remain for UK suppliers, but the appetite for international business has really been renewed and it’s a case of finding out how best to negotiate new regulations as demand from export markets returns,” says Will Jones, Chief Operating Officer of the British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA).

The return of overseas buyers evidenced at Spring Fair has been a boost to export interest and the conference agenda is all about enabling DIY, garden, pet, housewares and gift suppliers to take full advantage of these export opportunities.

The conference, which is being held at the Stratford Manor Hotel in Stratford-Upon-Avon, is open to all UK suppliers and has as its keynote speaker Shelley Boyle, Head of Business Development at online retailer, ManoMano. Other presentations will be given by a UK government lobbyist as well as experts on international commercial law, world economics, post-Brexit procedures and international trade compliance.

The conference delegates will also hear incisive case studies from some of the UK’s most successful exporters within the home and garden improvement and pet sectors. There will be many opportunities for Q&As with the speakers and delegates can obtain individually tailored advice from a selection of export experts including freight logistics and international trade show organisers among others.

Amanda Sizer Barrett, Director General of Gardenex and PetQuip, confirmed: “We are delighted to be partnering with BHETA again to deliver another top-level export conference, thanks to the quality of the content and the insights, inspiration and practical advice that the speakers will give to the delegates. Recent events have demonstrated an appetite in the industry for face-to-face networking and interaction again, and the conference will deliver this throughout the packed agenda.”

Will Jones agreed: “This will be a key occasion for all companies in our sectors who are interested in maximising their export opportunities. The Future for International Trade conference is always a lively and informative occasion focussing on retail trends in international markets, the practicalities of export logistics, compliance and the inspiring case studies by some of the UK’s leading exporters. It’s all about helping UK companies navigate their best routes to secure international sales, especially in a changed world post-Brexit and with the ongoing impact of the pandemic.”

Places at the conference can be secured by contacting any of the organisers.  Contact Gardenex or PetQuip by emailing katie-mai@petquip.com; or visit www.gardenex.com.  Contact BHETA by emailing zm@bheta.co.uk or visit www.bheta.co.uk.   Members of Gardenex, PetQuip, CHA and BHETA benefit from a preferential delegate rate of £69 per person at the conference. The event is also open to non-members at £149 per person (both plus VAT).

10 Reasons not to miss Glee 2022

Home to the biggest brands in gardening, plus a host of exciting new innovators, Glee 2022 is set to be THE place to boost your retail offering for the year ahead...

Home to the biggest brands in gardening, plus a host of exciting new innovators, Glee 2022 is set to be THE place to boost your retail offering for the year ahead.

Last year the show welcomed highly transactional and quality buyers from a host of multiple and independent garden centres, high street and department stores, builder’s merchants, and online retailers, and this year is set to be no different as the popularity of gardening continues to soar.

With so much to see, there has never been a better reason to ensure that Glee 2022 is firmly in your diary but, if you still need persuading to get out of the office, here’s ten reasons not to miss what is set to be the biggest Glee for many years!

  1. No substitute for face-to-face – After several years of communicating and showcasing new products virtually, the reopening of events in 2021 proved that there is no substitute for face-to-face interaction. Whilst normality has largely resumed, exhibitions are continuing to ride this wave of popularity, as reflected in the high levels of bookings that are taking place. To-date Glee 2022 is over 80% booked and, when full, will represent the largest gathering of new and existing garden and outdoor living brands under one roof anywhere in the UK. Can you afford to miss out?
  2. A new dateline to suit your buying needs – In 2021 the Glee team undertook an in-depth consultation with key stakeholders, representing suppliers, retailers and trade associations. The outcome of these discussions was that moving Glee to a different time of year would better reflect and support the ongoing development of the garden retail supply chain and associated buying cycles. As a result, Glee will now take place in late June 28th – 30th, helping retailers to place orders at a time to suit extended lead times.
  3. Eight product sectors to choose from – Glee 2022 will be home to hundreds of exciting brands, together covering eight core product sectors – Garden Care, Landscaping & Garden Decoration, Outdoor Entertaining, Plants, Home, Gift & Clothing, PAW (Pet & Animal Wellbeing), Retail Services & Experiences, and Food & Catering. With so many brands under one roof, retailers can expect to see the biggest profile of new products and innovation as thousands of new range additions are earmarked to exclusively launch ahead of the 2023 season at this year’s Glee event.
  4. The importance of newness – Differentiating yourself from the competition is an important part of retailing. Stocking new and unique brands is an easy way to ensure you are offering something different, which is why a trip to Glee will always pay dividends. From the dedicated Innovators Zone - home to inventors and entrepreneurs offering exciting grass-roots product development and one-off design ideas - to the 100 plus new brands that will be making their Glee debut in 2022, every step around the show will be sure to uncover something exciting.
  5. The return of big brands - Glee 2022 will also be welcoming back several brands that have not exhibited for a number of years. These brands will include UK Garden Buildings, Smart Garden, G Plants, Scheurich, Kadai, Panacea, STV and long-term Spring Fair exhibitor, PMS International.
  6. Network, network, network – Whether it’s a working lunch, joining a GIMA Buyer Connect speed networking session, or meeting with new and existing suppliers, a few hours at Glee will deliver much more value than hours spent on the road. No other opportunity within the year delivers so much value under one roof.
  7. Get connected - Let the Glee Connect app help guide you to new products and personalised exhibitor recommendations. This pocket-sized interactive guide to the show uses intelligent AI- functionality to help visiting retailers to better measure – and even increase - their ‘Return on Time’ spent at the show.
  8. Education & celebration - As always, Glee will offer visitors a free three-day seminar programme which will provide an enriched programme of expert business and garden retail advice to help grow your business through challenging trading conditions. This content will be derived from extensive industry research and is set to tackle key talking points, struggles and successes. In addition, the Glee New Product Awards and Buyers Power List will celebrate the best our industry has to offer.
  9. Get ahead of the curve – With hundreds of brands together launching thousands of new product launches, PLUS an unrivalled seminar programme, and leading trade association support, Glee is the place to come to see exactly what trends are shaping consumer demand. A day spent at Glee will provide detailed insight into the trends, colours and issues that are shaping garden retail and that will keep the tills ringing the year ahead.
  10. Access trade association support - As the central networking hub for the garden retail industry, Glee will once again play host to vital trade associations including GIMA, HTA, Gardenex, GCA, PetQuip and Pet Industry Federation, all of which will be welcoming existing and potential new members for the duration of the show, offering invaluable advice and expertise to those who need it.

Glee 2022 will take place on June 28th – 30th. Exhibiting floorspace is filling up fast with over 80% now sold. Brands and manufacturers interested in exhibiting are being urged to do so now to avoid missing out.

Organisers of the 50th anniversary Four Oaks Trade Show, set to take place in Cheshire on 6th & 7th September 2022, are asking visitors what they’d like to experience at the show.

Plans are progressing for a special event to bounce back after a two-year Covid-enforced gap. Hundreds of exhibitors are confirmed and a comprehensive free-to-attend conference programme of workshops, practical seminars and roundtable discussions are being planned. Visitor views are being sought on which topics should make the final schedule.

"We’ve had some excellent submissions and it’s really tough to choose what to fit into just two days so we’d like to hear from anyone intending to visit, on what would make their time at the show most productive and interesting. Visitors are invited to express their preferences through this Four Oaks short online survey.”

“2022 will be a double celebration as it’ll be the first chance for the industry to meet together in person at Four Oaks for three years. We know there’s a lot of excitement among our exhibitors to meet with customers, colleagues, and long-term friends from across the UK and Europe, in the unique Four Oaks atmosphere that combines business with social activity. Our mission is to make it a valuable event for all attendees," explained Christina Walker, Sales and Marketing Manager.

The Four Oaks Trade Show has been a must-attend date in the horticultural industry calendar for half a century, presenting an unrivalled showcase of plants, growing and landscape supplies, machinery, equipment, retail products, services, and much more.

Hillier unveils design for BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair

For the second year running Hillier will be headline partner of the BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair at Beaulieu in Hampshire, which takes place between 29th April and 1st May 2022, and with it is creating the Hillier Experience.

The Hillier Experience, which proved incredibly popular at the inaugural Spring Fair in 2021, will see two gardening themes merge, offering visitors a true source of garden inspiration for ideas to take home. The spectacular garden display will highlight both a contemporary garden that displays the impact of clean lines and modern influence, and a traditional English garden.

The contemporary garden area will create a sense of movement towards a more modern design, incorporating a focus on outdoor living. Hedging for defined lines and contemporary paving will lead visitors into a social alfresco dining area, decorated with pots containing attractive structural shrubs. The garden will feature a striking display of cloud pruning of various sizes and textures, as well as bright purple alliums to add a splash of colour and fragrance. A thought provoking twist in the formal planting, there will also be a wildflower area and bug hotel to encourage wildlife to a modern space.

The traditional garden area within the Hillier Experience will reflect upon the distinctive and much-loved old English garden style with vibrant colours and inspiring historical touches. A strikingly colourful herbaceous border will take visitors on a journey of vivacity and scent throughout a rainbow of beautiful flora, with added nods to Gertrude Jekyll’s horticultural influences. A traditional Lutyens bench will form a focal point within the English Garden area, incorporating elements of the arts and crafts movement of Gertrude Jekyll’s and Edwin Lutyen’s time. A range of different shrubs and perennials will give form and shape to the border and will be enticing for bees and butterflies alike. Surrounded by sleepers and clematis plant obelisks, visitors can be truly inspired by the variations of height and constructions providing ideas for their own outdoor space.

Experts from the Hillier team will also be located around the Hillier Experience, offering tips and advice to visitors, and answering any questions they may have about their own gardens and plants. The retail section of the Hillier Experience will provide an opportunity to buy top-quality plants featured within the garden design all grown peat free and cared for by Hillier’s expert growers on the companies’ nurseries in Hampshire.

There will also be a fantastic opportunity to purchase the newly launched Forsythia x intermedia ‘Discovery’ (JOHN MITCHELL) that has been added to the Hillier collection this year. The introduction of Forsythia x intermedia ‘Discovery’ comes following its discovery 15 years ago in the garden of John Mitchell. Propagated from just a single 15cm twig found on a Forsythia bush and nurtured by the expert growers at Hillier nursery in Romsey, the plant features ovate green leaves, vibrant yellow flowers and a strong supporting structure. It will be a brilliant occasion to purchase this delightful new form that adds striking variegated foliage to the already impressive flowers of this Genus.

As headline partner of the BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair, Hillier will offer a vast array of innovation and encouragement to gardeners of all abilities. “We are looking forward to being headline partner at BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair for the second year running and to be unveiling new details about our Hillier Experience garden feature,” comments Chris Francis, Wholesale and Retails Director of Hillier. “We have developed many displays throughout our history, but this design is a step forward for us and offers something more diverse, particularly through the contrast of contemporary and traditional themes. We are excited to showcase our Hillier Experience and to meet many gardeners over the course of the Fair, helping to impart our knowledge and inspire garden ideas.”

The BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair will take place in the beautiful open grounds of Beaulieu in Hampshire, home of the National Motor Museum and the historical Montagu Home Palace House, from Friday 29th April to Sunday 1st May 2022.

Tong Garden Centre trains mental health first aiders

The people and culture department at Tong Garden Centre has recruited a team of mental health first aiders from its staff.

Fourteen employees from Tong attended a two-day Mental Health First Aider course to equip them with an understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing in the workplace.

The delegates, including representatives from Grass Hoppers Play, Hearty's Food Hall and retail and catering teams at all managerial levels, learned practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues and were taught how to support a person in distress and guide them to further support.

Tong's Head of People and Culture, Neil Barwise-Carr was one of the delegates: "We all have mental health. Better mental health is good for everyone and recognising this is good for society.

"At Tong Garden Centre, we want to develop a team where everyone can thrive and where mental health can be openly discussed and supported. The first step on this journey is to train up a team of  mental health first aiders who will raise the profile of mental health among their peers.

"We're proud that so many of our team members volunteered for the training and we're excited about the contribution that they will make to positive mental health at Tong."

The training, organised by MHFA England, was part of the Tong Lane business's commitment to their own ‘healthy minds' campaign which links into a number of health and well-being initiatives. Going forward, the team of Mental Health First Aiders will meet quarterly to check in on each other and complete an anonymous survey to capture the impact the first aides are having across the business.

With the start to the gardening season just around the corner, now is the time to double check that you not only have stock ready to sell but that your suppliers are also able to respond to peaks in seasonal demand. One supplier that is proudly ‘ready to go’ is Durston Garden Products Ltd.

Somerset-based Durstons – suppliers of the leading growing media portfolio of products with added ‘Gro Boost’ – has been working tirelessly to ensure that the company is fully prepared for whatever the 2022 season might throw at it.

To-date Durstons has over 40% of its annual stock on the ground – thanks to the introduction of an additional packaging line - all packaged and ready for delivery into store within as little as five days for full loads, meaning retailers can rest assured that they will have stock when it is needed most. Part-loads are also available, with delivery earmarked within just 10 days.

Durstons also offers retailers flexibility regarding stock quantity with minimum order value set out at just five pallets. For those where no forklift or offloading facilities available, or where space is tight, Durstons can also offer Moffett deliveries.

Durstons Sales Director, Dan Durston, said: “The last two years has shown all of us that demand can wipe out stock quicker than anticipated, and in some cases quicker than most production lines can keep up with. As a result, we have taken vital steps to ensure that we are ready to meet demand head on, in turn offering our customers reassurance that we can help them to respond to peaks in demand. Whether it is our composts and soil improvers, or specialist composts, John Innes range and decorative bark, we have stock ready and waiting.”

‘Unlock your garden’ to raise funds for Greenfingers

Supporters of Greenfingers will be pleased to learn that there is an additional way to support the charity – unlocking your garden!

Supporters of Greenfingers will be pleased to learn that there is an additional way to support the charity – unlocking your garden!

Unlocking your garden couldn’t be easier. Simply put, it’s a way of opening your garden to friends, family and the local community to enjoy and revel in the fruits of your labour. Whether your garden is a rose lover’s dream, a wonder for nature or big enough and manicured enough to give Capability Brown a run for his money, then why not consider showing off your efforts all in the name of charity.

One couple who ‘unlocked’ their garden in 2021 for Greenfingers was Kent-based Richard and Cheryl Claxton, who, like many, realised the incredibly important value of garden on both physical and mental wellbeing during lockdown. With their hands muddy and the garden thriving, the couple learnt of Greenfingers via ‘My Real Garden’ – a special, community-driven garden book penned by none other than Greenfingers patron, Ann-Marie Powell – and felt there wasn’t a better time to show their support.

With two acres lovingly landscaped over a seven-year period, Richard and Cheryl had a lot to showcase including fit-to-bursting vegetable patches, fruit cages and greenhouse, extensive lawns and patios, a wildlife pond, herbaceous borders, a bog garden and a shady wildflower and woodland area which has started to take shape in 2021. If that wasn’t enough, a two-acre paddock with a wildflower meadow, orchard, coppice woodland and thriving polytunnel was also available to see.

Over the course of a weekend, Richard and Cheryl welcomed friends and family, as well as neighbours, to their incredible garden, raising over £2,000 for the Greenfingers charity.

Speaking about their garden unlocking, Richard Claxton, said: “After realising the importance of our garden to us through lockdown, and how very lucky we are to have one, we decided to open for Greenfingers Charity. We’d never thought of opening our garden before and were a little jittery at the prospect, but it was a fantastic experience to be able to share what we have created with so many lovely people. We couldn't imagine a better fundraising cause than Greenfingers: providing the poorliest of children with wonderful outside spaces to explore, enjoy and connect with nature.”

“Unlock your Garden”

If you would like to know more about how to “unlock your garden” for Greenfingers then please contact Linda Petrons, Greenfingers’ Director of Fundraising and Communications by emailing Linda@greenfingerscharity.org.uk.

RHS and Sitting Spiritually unveil RHS Four Seasons Bench

The Royal Horticultural Society and garden furniture maker Sitting Spiritually have announced the launch of the RHS Four Seasons Bench, the perfect outdoor seat for those who cherish their gardens and the ever-changing visual splendour of the seasons...

The Royal Horticultural Society and garden furniture maker Sitting Spiritually have announced the launch of the RHS Four Seasons Bench, the perfect outdoor seat for those who cherish their gardens and the ever-changing visual splendour of the seasons.

Made from FSC seasoned oak, and a showcase of British design and craftsmanship, the RHS Four Seasons Bench offers four exquisite seasonal hand-carved inserts to choose from: Daffodil (spring), Rose (summer), Oak (autumn) and Snowdrop (winter).

As with all handcrafted Sitting Spiritually garden furniture pieces, the RHS Four Seasons Bench is built to last, combining meticulous standards for precision joinery with the finest-quality materials.

The design of the RHS Four Seasons Bench was inspired by 2013’s elegant three-seat RHS Centenary Bench, which celebrated 100 Years of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show – and, like the Centenary Bench, the Four Seasons Bench is strongly influenced by the Arts & Crafts Movement.

This was a movement that emphasised craftsmanship which stresses the inherent beauty of the material, the importance of nature as inspiration, and the value of simplicity, utility and beauty.

The RHS Four Seasons Bench is now available exclusively from the Sitting Spiritually website.

The only bespoke bench and swing maker endorsed by the RHS, Sitting Spiritually of Lyme Regis has been making its hand-finished wooden garden swing seats, pergolas, garden benches and rope swings for a highly discerning customer base for over 15 years. Its exclusive seats can be found in the gardens of Michelin Star restaurants and A-list celebrities throughout the country, and, of course, in a number of RHS gardens.

All Sitting Spiritually timber comes from FSC or PEFC sustainable sources, ensuring that it has been tracked from felling and replanting through to the workshop and the customer’s garden.

Martin Young, Founder of Sitting Spiritually of Lyme Regis, says: “The RHS Four Seasons bench has been designed with our wonderful British seasons at the heart of it — and built with the very best materials and joinery techniques available. Our thanks to the RHS for supporting and inspiring this beautifully crafted bench.”

Cathy Snow, Licensing Manager, RHS, says: “Sitting Spiritually’s newest RHS-inspired and endorsed bench manages once again to surprise and delight, combining quality and innovation in an outdoor seat that is not just attractive and functional but long-lasting and sustainably built. We are delighted to be continuing this rewarding partnership.”

Spice up your gardening this year with Town & Country

This year, Town & Country wants to encourage people to ‘spice up their gardening’, inspired by the launch of the brand’s new, chilli patterned gloves...

Even the most passionate of gardeners can find themselves lacking inspiration from time to time, looking for ways to add interest to their planting schemes. This year, Town & Country wants to encourage people to ‘spice up their gardening’, inspired by the launch of the brand’s new, chilli patterned gloves.

The gloves feature a chilli pattern in three different colourways; green, red, and yellow – perfect for spicing up your gardening! The comfort and flexibility of these vibrant flexigrip gloves make them perfect for carrying out light work, especially where dexterity is key. The latex coated palm and fingers provide added protection and grip for all your gardening tasks. They are soft, stretchy, bright and breathable, and the tailored fit means that no dirt can get onto your hands, perfect for planting and weeding.

Here are some tips to heat up your gardening this summer:

Create a red hot zone

Nothing says ‘spice’ like the colour red, and it’s so easy to bring it into the garden, with many plant varieties available in a range of fiery hues. To make your red garden design pop, use a variety of perennial and annual plants. You can’t go wrong with vibrant roses in shades of red and orange, and tulips, geraniums and Crocosmia ‘Hellfire’ will add a riot of fire. Acers will show a variety of colours throughout the year, while the stunning Cornus Midwinter Fire will bring the heat even in the depths of winter.

Go wild in the garden with a wildflower patch

Forget about the formality and spice things up by creating a wildflower patch in the garden. Even just a small area of your garden leftover to the wild can increase biodiversity and will encourage more pollinators, insects and wildlife to it. Sprinkle some wildflower seeds to help things along, and don’t forget a small pile of logs to create a wildlife habitat, and even a small pond or water feature.

Create an exotic spice patch

What’s the most obvious way to spice up your gardening? Grow some spices, of course! Herbs and spices are generally very easy to grow, and a lot of them share a few common requirements. Make sure that your soil isn’t too rich – as a rule of thumb, the worse the soil, the more intense flavour and scent the herbs will have. The main exception to this rule is flowering herbs – they do require a rich soil.

Make sure that your herbs get plenty of sunshine and water. It is the sunshine that will intensify the fragrance and flavour, and regular water with good drainage will keep them healthy. Some of the hardier Mediterranean herbs will tolerate less water, but they’ll let you know when they need some!

Periodic trimming and harvesting will also benefit the plants, just as they will benefit the meals you put them in!

For over 30 years, Town & Country's goal has been to make your gardening life easier and more enjoyable by developing gloves, footwear and accessories that provide unrivalled quality, style and performance. The chilli gloves are available exclusively at garden centres across the country.

Further information on Town & Country products can be found on the website at https://www.townandco.com.

The deal sees the exit of Mr Fothergill’s founding shareholders including joint managing director, John Fothergill.

Bents celebrates 85th anniversary with arrival of Lakeland

2022 is set to be a year of celebration at Glazebury based Bents Garden & Home. Not only is the family owned and run business marking its 85th anniversary this year, but it is also welcoming a new arrival to the Centre with the popular kitchenware and home brand, Lakeland set to join the wider Bents family later this year...

2022 is set to be a year of celebration at Glazebury based Bents Garden & Home. Not only is the family owned and run business marking its 85th anniversary this year, but it is also welcoming a new arrival to the Centre with the popular kitchenware and home brand, Lakeland set to join the wider Bents family later this year.

It is 85 years since Alfred and Margaret Bent started to sell roses from the front garden of their small terrace house, marking the start of what would be a very special journey.  Over the past 85 years and whilst never forgetting its gardening heritage, Bents has worked hard to create somewhere that is no longer just focused on the garden but also encompasses home, lifestyle and leisure.  The arrival of fellow family business Lakeland further enhances Bents’ appeal as a complete day out destination centre.

Says Matthew Bent, Managing Director: “As a family business we’ve never been ones to rest on our laurels.  We’ve always followed our passions and taken chances, and we are committed to quality, outstanding customer service and innovation, all of which are in line with Lakeland’s own philosophies and approach to their own family business.

“With their unrivalled collection of creative kitchenware and practical, time and effort saving ideas for the home we believe that they are going to fit perfectly into our family business, and we are all looking forward to welcoming them in store.”

Emma Kay, Head of Property at Lakeland adds: “We are delighted to be opening a new Lakeland store at Bents Garden & Home. It is a fantastic centre for our customers to visit, and is run on the same strong family values that are so important to us. Lakeland customers enjoy exploring our innovative, high quality kitchen and homeware products, which we believe will complement the existing offering at Bents really well. We know that we have many loyal customers in this area who will welcome the opening of our new store and we are looking forward to announcing our opening date and welcoming into store later this year.”

Over the past 85 years Bents has undergone a number of key milestones many of which were introduced by Matthew’s parents, Ron and Wendy Bent and went on to establish a number of key trends within the garden centre industry.

2017 saw the launch of the UK’s first Open Skies Glass House, an all-weather destination where customers can shop for plants come rain or shine and more recent years have seen the opening of a £10m extension, housing a number of new home and leisure departments, including an extensive Food Hall and Pet Place with its own Pet Cafe.  The arrival of Lakeland is another fantastic addition to the family and the latest step on the wider Bents’ journey.

Established in 1937 Bents is now in its third generation, with four of Alfred and Margaret’s grandchildren involved in the business: Matthew Bent, Managing Director; Rachel Bent Head of Visual Merchandising; Helen Bent, Head of Marketing and Katherine Bent, Head of HR. Under the guidance of three generations of the Bent family it is now a £25m turnover operation, employing over 400 colleagues.

Now, with a number of different dining destinations, outdoor play area, landscaped lake, Jurassic Cove Adventure Golf Course and on site nursery, where it grows and nurtures over 60% of its plants, Bents is a very different entity to when it began life 85 years ago, but says Matthew:  “despite growing in size we’ve worked hard to keep the great family feeling and ambiance we have established a reputation for; something I think my grandparents would be very proud of if they could see us now.”

Barton Grange at Brock near Preston has done it once again. The multi-award-winning garden centre has been announced as the winner of the GCA's ‘Destination Garden Centre of the Year’.

On top of this, Barton Grange have also won The Ruxley Rose, which presents the garden centre with the title of Best Plant Area in the UK. It is only the second time they have accomplished such a high achievement, highlighting the tough competition within the industry.

Judged in spring and autumn of last year, garden centres of the GCA were scored on their entrance, department areas, customer service, website, product range, product quality, sustainability and creativity.

Managing Director of Barton Grange Garden Centre, Guy Topping, said; “What an achievement? Winning Best Garden Centre and Best Plant Area in the UK is a dream! It’s a real honour to have been given these titles, especially with the challenges we’ve had to navigate over the year. The teams haven’t let the adaptations we’ve had to make due to the pandemic faze them, and have continued to work exceptionally hard. They’ve done an unbelievable job in making the garden centre such a fantastic and safe place to be, I couldn’t be more proud.”

Barton Grange Garden Centre have also been awarded prizes for their Creativity and Innovation, Indoor Lifestyle departments and Best Christmas Displays in the UK.

The Old Railway Line Garden Centre were awarded ‘Garden Centre of the Year 2021’ at the national GCA Awards. This highly prestigious award is an amazing achievement for the independent garden centre located in Three Cocks between Brecon and Hay-on-Wye.

The family-run business has won the title of ‘Best Garden Centre’ nine years running for the Wales and the West area, but this is just the second time they have achieved top spot at the GCA’s National Awards.

As well as this top prize, The Old Railway Line also picked up 1st place in the ‘Best Customer Service’ award and 2nd place for ‘Christmas 2021’ and ‘Best Garden Products Retailer’. All amazing achievements for an independent, rural business.

Usually, the awards are a big event taken place in person but due to the current restrictions, the GCA turned it into an online awards presentation.

Mark Cleary, founder of the local Garden Centre said: “We are thrilled to have been awarded as Best Garden Centre in the UK for 2021. Up against Garden Centres across the country, we were happy to have made it to the top 10. Then then be crowned top spot is a real honour, we’re all over the moon.

“The team have been amazing through all of the challenges we’ve faced over the past couple of years. Their hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed and it’s incredible to be recognised for this.

“We strive to deliver the very best shopping experience for our customers. The biggest reward for us is seeing them enjoying their time here at our centre. We couldn’t achieve this without the loyalty from our customers who have supported us over these testing times.

“I’m extremely proud of the team’s achievements at this years’ GCA national awards and I’m looking forward to seeing how we grow from here.”

The GCA represents over 200 garden centres nationwide. Through sharing information and its inspection programme the GCA helps members to achieve high standards in customer service, plant quality and reliability. The awards are decided by the results of the annual inspections, which take place at all GCA garden centres. Garden centres have no advance warning about when their inspection will take place and they do not have the option to turn away the inspector.

The award-winning, independent, family-run garden centre was established in 1990 by founders, Mark and Christina Cleary. It provides customers with quality plants, gardening products, indoor and outdoor living goods, pet care products, giftware and furniture. The Old Railway Line is also home to a farm shop stocking products from over 60 local and Welsh suppliers and a 150-seater restaurant offering delicious home cooked food.
