James Barnes will step down from his position as Chairman at the Horticultural Trades Association at the next Annual General Meeting in September, marking the end of his tenure, which began in 2019.
A long-standing and respected champion of the environmental horticulture sector, James Barnes has been a driving force at the HTA, bringing over 25 years of invaluable business experience to the role. Working with the President, the CEO and the Board, James has played a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of the HTA and promoting the interests of its members.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, James provided robust leadership, achieving the reopening of garden centres. His efforts ensured continued support for HTA members and contributed to the survival of many businesses, instilling a sense of reassurance in the industry's future as well as encouraging a new wave of gardeners to appreciate their own piece of green space. James has also played an active role in growing HTA’s voice with policymakers and the media on a range of issues, whether on a sustainable transition to peat-free gardening or borders and trade policy.
Will Armitage, President of the HTA, said: “James has been an exceptional asset to the HTA and the wider horticultural community. His commitment to the sector is undeniable and will continue, and his leadership has been instrumental in navigating numerous challenges and opportunities. He has passionately advocated for our members' interests, from ensuring their businesses could reopen during the pandemic to promoting sustainable practices like responsible peat use. Under James’ guidance, the senior leadership team at the HTA has been bolstered with the introduction of a CEO and new director roles who are effectively delivering a new strategy and value for members. We are all incredibly grateful for his dedication and guidance."
James Barnes, Chairman of the HTA, commented: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my tenure at the HTA and have relished helping to build the organisation to be the respected and leading voice for the sector it now is. The horticultural industry remains a great family of businesses. It has contributed hugely to my life, and it’s been great to be able to support its broader success. Thank you to all those who have made the journey so enjoyable and so fulfilling. I hope to continue to champion and defend its causes.”

British Garden Centres has won Gold at Harrogate’s Spring show with its show garden 'The Butterfly Garden', designed to raise awareness for Greenfingers Charity.
The UK’s largest family-run garden centre group teamed up with garden designer Pip Probert to design the garden at this year’s Spring Show. The garden offers a respite for families to sit, chat, and reflect whilst connecting with nature, a vital reminder of the work Greenfingers do, building similar gardens in children’s hospices across the UK.
The garden has had a great response from the general public visiting the show. It highlights and creates awareness of Greenfingers Charity and the work it does across UK hospices. It is also a take-home idea that is achievable in a homeowner's outdoor space.
The back fence, wrapping around the corners of the garden, is a symbol of arms embracing the occupant, providing a sense of comfort and protection. Two raised beds add layers of colour to draw the eye into the heart of the garden. At the heart lies an arbour seat, serving as a focal point, inviting people to pause and contemplate. Surrounding the arbour is a selection of plants from British Garden Centres, including hydrangeas, peonies, buxus and lilac, contained by sett edging. A gravel path winds through the garden, leading to a fire pit and four lounge chairs, offering seating options for relaxation and the option for families to come together.
The planting scheme is a key feature of the garden, designed to attract both people and butterflies with a range of colours and flower heads, whilst the borders are filled with a mix of plants, complemented by gravel planting to soften the overall look. A wooden archway marks the entrance, welcoming visitors into this butterfly haven.

James Ducker, Events Manager at British Garden Centres, said: “We are incredibly proud to see the ‘Butterfly Garden’ recognised with a Gold medal at the Harrogate Spring Show. This medal is a testament to the vision of designer Pip Probert and our partnership with Greenfingers Charity. We hope this show garden inspires visitors to support Greenfingers and raise awareness of its work creating more therapeutic spaces for families and children in hospices across the UK.”
Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising & Communications at Greenfingers Charity, added: “We are thrilled to hear British Garden Centres has won a highly deserved Gold medal for the Butterfly Garden and would like to say a huge thank you to them, Pip, and the team for raising awareness of Greenfingers vital work through this beautiful Show garden. The ‘Butterfly Garden’ symbolises the vital work we do in children’s hospices, building therapeutic outdoor spaces that provide a quiet place to sit, chat and for moments of peaceful reflection. “
All plants used in the Butterfly Garden will be available to purchase from the British Garden Centres stand, with a team of experts on hand with gardening advice and on how to replicate the look at home.

The horticultural world is mourning the sad loss of Peter Cox, founder of Glendoick Garden Centre, who passed away on 8th April at the age of 91.
Peter was born in February 1934 in Dundee Scotland. His father Euan Cox was a well-known horticultural writer and plant-collector who owned a garden at Glendoick, Perth, Scotland.
After studying horticulture at college in Edinburgh and working for a year at Notcutts Nurseries, Woodbridge, Peter and his father Euan founded the rhododendron nursery ‘Glendoick Gardens Ltd’ in 1953.
Peter married Tricia Sherrard in 1963. They met when she came to buy rhododendrons for her family garden, Maryborough House, Cork Ireland. Their sons Kenneth (born 1964) and Raymond (born 1966) and their parents lived at Sandyhall farm across the fields from Glendoick.
In 1972 Glendoick Garden Centre was opened, largely under the management of Tricia Cox while Peter ran the nursery. Over the years Glendoick became a centre for excellence in all aspects of the culture of, hybridising of and publishing books on rhododendrons.

Peter Cox – Plant Hunting
Peter Cox has probably seen and studied more species of Rhododendron in the wild than any one else at any time. Peter and his best friend Sir Peter Hutchison went on 18 major plant-hunting expeditions and his eye for good garden plants brought back from his travels range from Ulex gallii Mizen from S. Ireland to Rhododendron coxianum which he discovered in India in 1965. He has collected thousands of seed numbers from many parts of the globe, all carefully documented as to altitude, aspects, growing conditions etc. Both the seed itself and many plants grown from it have been distributed to Botanic Gardens and collections in many countries. Cox and Hutchison, one of the world’s most durable plant hunting partnerships, returned to China, Tibet, or the Himalaya almost every year, until they retired to write their memoirs the mammoth book Seeds of Adventure.
Peter Cox – Plant Breeder
One of the most successful and important rhododendron hybridisers, in the 1960s Peter Cox that the future lay in developing cultivars for the small garden. His dwarf rhododendron hybrids were named after birds such as ‘Chikor’, ‘Curlew’ and ‘Ptarmigan’ and his evergreen azaleas named after animals, such as ‘Panda’ and ‘Squirrel’. Hybridising in the 1980s focussed on rhododendrons with coloured foliage and new colour breaks. Compact Hybrids Wine and Roses ['pinkros'] and Evered ['85/1C'] are protected by Plant Breeders rights and have become best sellers worldwide.

Peter Cox – Gardener
Peter served for many years on the Gardens Committee of the National Trust for Scotland and on the Board of Trustees of the Dundee Botanic Garden. Peter Cox was a modest and shy man, who had a pronounced stammer and preferred to be gardening at Glendoick or climbing Chinese mountains in search of plants to being the centre of attention. And yet he truly was the world’s ‘Mr Rhododendron’. It is doubtful that anyone has ever known as much or achieved so much in this field and it is doubtful anyone ever will.
Peter and Tricia Cox celebrated their golden wedding in 2013. Peter loved dogs, (black labradors), table tennis, bridge, shooting, wild birds, cricket and talking horticulture and plant hunting with fellow enthusiasts.
Peter Cox died on 8th April 2025, aged 91.

Sipcam Home & Garden join peat-free initiative

Sipcam Home & Garden has joined other garden industry bodies and suppliers in a new initiative aimed at helping gardeners get better results from peat-free compost and help accelerate the UK’s transition away from peat.
The campaign aims to spread far and wide, new guidance from the horticultural sector on how to grow successfully using peat-free compost.
Nigel Thompson, Head of Sales & Marketing at Sipcam Home & Garden commented on joining the campaign: “We’re absolutely thrilled to support this initiative. Education is key to helping gardeners make the most of peat-free compost, and we’re passionate about providing the knowledge and tools needed for success.
"By working together, we can support gardeners in making more sustainable choices while ensuring their plants thrive. We can’t wait to contribute to this important movement and inspire more people to grow greener!”
The importance of going peat-free is not clear to everybody and only 30% of people with a garden say they consistently purchase peat-free options. Peat extraction is highly damaging to the environment, so it’s essential the gardening industry help growers and gardeners switch to peat-free products.
Sipcam Home & Garden has joined 18 other horticultural organisations in contributing to expert guidance led by Enrich the Earth.
The migration over to peat-free compost all depends on educating gardeners and this initiative comes at the right time to help everyone in horticulture create #PeatFreeSuccess! Download & share the Peat-Free Success guide by clicking here!

David Domoney and This Morning: Putting Front Gardens Back in Bloom

ITV’s This Morning, gardening expert David Domoney was once again tasked with creating a Front Garden Facelift, a popular feature on the daytime show, in fewer than 2 hours. This time, surprising a Bracknell resident, nominated by her best friend, with another moving transformation...

ITV’s This Morning, gardening expert David Domoney was once again tasked with creating a Front Garden Facelift, a popular feature on the daytime show, in fewer than 2 hours. This time, surprising a Bracknell resident, nominated by her best friend, with another moving transformation.
Front gardens across the UK are disappearing, with over seven million lost to paving, decking or gravel, impacting wildlife, drainage and wellbeing. Yet green spaces are proven to reduce stress, boost mood and help people feel more connected to their communities. Over 80% of people believe greenery in front gardens improves their overall wellbeing.
David Domoney’s latest This Morning makeover, with support from Merrist Wood College and Winnersh Garden Centre, transformed Maxine’s front garden into a colourful and calming space. It is a powerful reminder of the value of front gardens and why bringing them back can make a real difference to both people and the planet.
Maxine, a former postal worker, was nominated by her best friend of 33 years, Lisa, now her live-in carer. They met when Maxine was Lisa’s postie, and a friendly chat blossomed into a lifelong friendship. Maxine supported Lisa through a critical illness, and now Lisa cares full-time for Maxine, who has hip dysplasia and limited mobility.
Despite daily challenges, they live with joy, sharing their Bracknell home with two beloved dogs, Arlo and Teddy. From gentle evening walks to cosy TV nights, their bond is built on love, laughter and loyalty. A friendship that’s weathered every storm and continues to shine.
Friendships are often of underestimated importance to our mental and physical health. Studies show that having a few close friends can reduce the risk of heart disease, depression and even early death. The benefits are comparable to giving up smoking. People with strong social ties report greater happiness, lower stress levels and improved mental well-being.
The live transformation began on This Morning as presenters Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond introduced David knocking on Maxine’s front door in Bracknell just after 10am. What followed was a whirlwind of digging, planting, painting and decorating, all to surprise a very deserving This Morning viewer.
Joining David were students from Merrist Wood College, lending their time and energy to help bring Maxine’s garden to life. Plants and materials were generously donated by Winnersh Garden Centre, of British Garden Centres, whose expert staff also provided on-site support for the makeover. It was a proud moment for young horticulturists to see their work showcased live, and a brilliant example of how rewarding and diverse a career in horticulture can be.
Libby Stubbs, Marketing and Communications Co-ordinator, from British Garden Centres, said of being a young person working in horticulture: “Coming from a family-run business, I always knew I wanted to work in this industry. As a career, it covers so much, from gardening to retail, marketing, design, floristry, and so much more. It’s such a rewarding and varied place to work, and it’s amazing to take these opportunities to share the love nature can bring.”
And shortly after 12:15, the team were live with the completed look. The finished garden was bursting with vibrant spring colour, thanks to a cheerful border planted around the edge and clever wall displays by Wonderwall, ensuring full use of the space. The transformation brought both beauty and practicality to Maxine’s doorstep; an inviting space she can enjoy every day. Maxine was thrilled with the result and even had the chance to chat with her favourite This Morning presenter, Alison Hammond, adding an extra special moment to an already unforgettable day.

David Domoney said: “This makeover is a tribute to Maxine and Lisa’s friendship—a story filled with strength and care. It’s been an absolute joy to create this space for them. Huge thanks to Winnersh Garden Centre team, part of the British Garden Centre group, and our brilliant students from Merrist Wood College for helping bring this vision to life. I would also like to thank our contributors, including Tiller’s Turf, Wonderwall Living Walls, AMES Tools, Laser Boutique, Hippo bags, and the Fun Blue Plaque Company.”
Peter Duignan, teacher of Landscaping at the college, said: “This was a really great opportunity for the students to get some hands-on horticulture experience. Working to a tight deadline and appearing on television for the first time has given them valuable memories and insights to carry forward into their future careers in horticulture.”

This makeover proves that a front garden isn’t just the first thing people see—it’s a space that can bring comfort, joy, and a sense of pride. For Maxine, it’s now a personal haven that reflects the love and loyalty of her lifelong friend.
As David continues his series of Front Garden Facelifts, This Morning shows that behind every front door, there’s a story worth celebrating.
If you missed the live makeover, you can watch it now on This Morning’s YouTube Channel.
Merrist Wood College’s next open day is Wednesday, the 7th of May, if you’re in the Surrey area.

The latest HTA Market Update reveals a strong performance for UK garden centres in March. Overall sales, excluding catering, were up +23% compared to March 2024, and +43% compared to March 2023. This impressive increase occurred even though March 2024 partially benefited from Good Friday and Easter[1] Saturday trade, demonstrating that favourable weather conditions this year undoubtedly drove footfall nationwide. Compared to March 2024, bedding plants and plant care products were both up +40%, sales of garden features and structures were up +44%, and garden tools were up +39%. All gardening categories were up by at least +23% compared to March 2024, except for indoor plants (up +5%), which are not so weather dependent. Comparisons with March 2023 are even more exceptional, with many gardening categories up at least +65% in 2025. For context, March 2023 was the UK’s wettest March over the last 30 years. The increased footfall also translated into positive results for catering. Sales in garden centre cafés and restaurants grew by +16% compared to 2024 and by +35% compared to 2023, marking a strong recovery following relatively flat months in January and February. Beyond overall sales, average transaction values also increased by +6% compared to 2024, while transaction numbers were up +16%. Strong BBQ and outdoor furniture sales were key drivers in increasing average transaction values, another indication of good weather purchasing. As a result of this strong performance in a significant trading month for garden centres, all gardening and non-gardening categories are ahead compared to 2024 for the year-to-date. Despite these positive trends, consumer confidence remains low at -19 points, although consumers’ preference to save rather than spend may be declining. It's important to note that recent market volatility is not yet reflected in these scores, and consumer confidence may become increasingly fragile in the coming months if wider market forces compound existing cost-of-living pressures. Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the HTA, commented: "The strong garden sales in March highlight how significantly good weather impacts our sector. This has helped recover from the quieter months of January and February, bringing overall sales up +12% by value compared to 2024 for the year to the end of March. “With sales of bedding plants, plant care, garden features, and tools all experiencing growth – in some cases exceeding 40% compared to last year – it's clear that shoppers are eager to enhance their gardens and outdoor living areas. “As we look ahead with optimism to the anticipated boost of the Easter weekend to come, we hope that spending will remain strong throughout the coming months. However, it's crucial to remember that with rising employers' national insurance contributions and the minimum wage as of April, these sales are vital for garden centres to meet rising operational costs. While this strong March provides a welcome boost, a sustained period of robust sales through April, May, and June will be key to offsetting those increased costs and ensuring the long-term viability of our members." Paying tribute to its origins as ‘Dobbie & Co’, a seed merchant founded in 1865, the limited-edition range draws on the business’s archive to create a contemporary collection with historical resonance.
Central to the collection is a bespoke green and white floral print, selected by Dobbies customers from a curated shortlist of designs. The pattern features original illustrations and a signature from a 1906 Dobbie & Co seed catalogue, tying the collection firmly back to the company’s roots.

Fancy going to a garden party where there’s no food or drink? Of course you don’t!
And neither do the pollinators.
High street retailer Robert Dyas is prompting custoers to prepare for World Bee Day on May 20th and host a pollinator party with nectar-rich flowers, clever pollen-party tricks and luxury hotels for those who drink a little too much nectar and need a bed for the night.
A third of UK bees have disappeared in the last ten years*, and 80% of the UK’s butterfly species have been declining in either abundance or distribution (or both) since the 1970s**. Without these important creatures, we’d have food shortages due to a lack of pollination, to name just one problem. So it’s important we gardeners step up and provide for the neighbourhood bee – and all pollinators.
With National Gardening Week also coming up (28th April - 4th May) and Mental Health Awareness Week beginning on 12th May, it couldn’t be a better time to get your garden into shape for the local wildlife.
High street retailer Robert Dyas has lots of gardening advice and handy products to help. Their in-house expert, Low Cost Lou, says: “Pollinator numbers may be in decline but there is something many of us can do to help: gardening! With our range of low-cost gardening equipment and live plants online, you can create a thriving bee- and pollinator-friendly garden with minimal effort, whatever size your space is.”

After revolutionising the market in 2024 with its reimagined Pro X series, EGO Power+ is harnessing new markets this year with a bold portfolio of products. With the adoption of battery power becoming more popular, customers will now have even more ways to use their EGO batteries.
This year, EGO is expanding its Lifestyle range – a selection of battery-powered outdoor power equipment for use in the garden and beyond – to grow its innovative capabilities and to give existing customers exciting new uses for their EGO ARC 56V lithium batteries. New additions to the range include the SK1800E Outdoor Speaker, FN1000E Mini-Misting Fan, WDV0900E Wet/Dry Vacuum, the BSP3500E 15L Backpack Sprayer and the ETA0800E Earth and Ice Auger.
Back in the garden, EGO has developed an exciting range of new products. Its flagship product for 2025 is the LM2230E-SP professional mower. Its largest mower to date, this 55cm mower with a super composite deck, can cut up to 2000 sqm on a single charge with a 10Ah battery. For those who prefer their lawn maintenance a little more automated, EGO is releasing its first robot mowers, the RM4000E and the RM2000E, which can seamlessly adapt to the complexities of any lawn. And for tidying up the edges, the ST1510E-T line trimmer puts the ease back into trimming with PowerloadTM Technology which loads the line in seconds at the push of a button.
Ideal for arborists, the CS1200E professional top-handled chainsaw is a compact, lightweight saw which cuts smoothly and simplifies tree work.
Back on the ground, EGO’s 2025 leaf blowers have been developed with even more power and performance. The LB6150E has a 1,045m3/h output in Boost mode, and 18.5N of air force while the LB6700E has 1,138m3/h output in Boost mode and a 20N air force for bigger tasks across large areas. After blowing the leaves into a pile, EGO is also making light work of clearing with its first ever 3-in-1 leaf vacuum, the LV5000E 3. With the capability of mulching leaves as they are collected, this tool has the power to tackle small to medium household clean-ups and easily converts from vacuum to blower.
Momentum continues this year with the Pro X series, which is designed for heavy-duty commercial users who need tools that can cope with the demands of a busy working day and be charged overnight. Coming this year, is EGO’s first Pro X multi-tool powerhead, which has been upgraded to ensure it is robust enough to tackle the toughest of jobs. Also joining the series is the new LBPX1100, which is one of the most powerful backpack blowers on the market and the LBX1000 which provides the power of a backpack blower in a handheld unit. All three tools form part of the new generation of Pro X tools with BLE connectivity built-in for status monitoring.

Steve Roskell, Marketing Director EMEA for EGO, said: “The demand for battery-powered outdoor power equipment has surged dramatically in recent years, and EGO is proud to be leading the charge as more users make the switch. Building on the success of our Pro X series last year, we’re excited to unveil even more ground-breaking and innovative products this year”.
Compatible with EGO’s range of multi-tools is the new STA1700 line trimmer attachment which features technologies for automatic line feeding and fast line replacement as well as EGO’s first Dethatcher attachment (DA1400) which removes the thatch layer between grass and soil for a healthier lawn.

Frank P Matthews Trees, one of the UK’s leading nurseries renowned for its high-quality trees and expert horticultural knowledge is thrilled to announce it will be exhibiting at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2025 for the first time ever. As part of its continued commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility, Frank P Matthews will be showcasing a unique collection of ornamental Malus trees alongside the artistry of formal trained apple and pear trees.
A Celebration of Ornamental Malus Trees For the first time at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Frank P Matthews Trees will present aspecialist exhibit dedicated to the single genus Malus. The exhibit will highlight the striking diversity of Malus species, showcasing their rich palette of flower colours, unique leaf shapes, and varied tree forms.
Malus trees, commonly known as crab apples, are often overlooked for their beautiful blossom and considered solely for their fruiting habit, yet they offer a fantastic range of colours, flowers, and fruits. From small, showy trees to larger, majestic specimens, these trees play a vital role in creating vibrant, pollinator-friendly gardens; producing vital food sources over not one but two seasons, acting as natural bird feeders during Autumn.
The Frank P Matthews Trees exhibit will celebrate the aesthetic and environmental contributions of Malus trees, providing visitors with a rare opportunity to see these beautiful trees in a comprehensive, curated display.
“Ornamental Malus trees are often underestimated in the garden, but they bring so much to the table with their beautiful blooms, rich colours, and great ecological benefits. We’re excited to bring them to the forefront at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2025, and showcase how versatile these trees really are,” said Stephanie James Dunn, Sales Director at Frank P Matthews.
Formal Training of Apple and Pear Trees: A Creative Approach
Frank P Matthews will also highlight the artistry of formal trained apple and pear trees in its Chelsea exhibit. Formal training has been a popular gardening technique in the UK for decades, but often seen as complex and challenging to maintain. However, the nursery aims to demonstrate how these trees can be both creative and manageable, to enhance even the smallest of gardens.
“These trained apple and pear trees are not only functional and productive but can also be works of art in the garden. We hope to inspire visitors to see how these trees can add character, beauty, and structure to their spaces no matter the size,” said Nick Dunn, Third Generation at Frank P Matthews.
A Commitment to Supporting Local and Sustainability
“We are honoured to be working with a host of Herefordshire based businesses who have UK wide impact for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show debut. Brands such as Edward Bulmer Paints, Tom’s Yard, Melcourt, Border Oak and Plant Supports all share our passion for sustainability and are doing incredible things for their community, ” shares Stephanie James Dunn, Sales Director of Frank P Matthews.
Frank P Matthews is one of the UK’s foremost nurseries, known for its extensive range of ornamental and fruit trees. Founded in 1901, and now in its fourth generation of family ownership, Frank P Matthews Trees has become a trusted supplier of both ornamental and fruit trees to commercial and private customers across the UK introducing exciting and groundbreaking tree varieties, making significant contributions to the world of horticulture.
