Blue Diamond report sales up by 19% for 2025

Blue Diamond have just published their Trading Statement for the Year Ended 31 December 2025. Total sales for the year grew by just under 19%. Blue Diamond have just published their Trading Statement for the Year Ended 31 December 2025.

Group Finance Director & Company Secretary, Neil McDonald, has reported that total sales for the year grew by just under 19%. Like for like sales for the full year were up 6.1% (8.4% in the first half and 4.2% in the second half) with Garden Centres at 6.3% and Restaurants at 5.8%.

The full statement is as follows:

"Our focus during 2025 has been on three principal objectives: Maximising trade from the good gardening season; integrating the six centres acquired in the year; and improving core profitability despite market and tax headwinds. We are pleased to report success with all of these.

"After the very strong sales performance in the first half, we achieved good growth through the autumn and Christmas. Total sales for the year have grown by just under 19%. Like for like sales for the full year were up 6.1% (8.4% in the first half and 4.2% in the second half) with Garden Centres at 6.3% and Restaurants at 5.8%. This was ahead of the market by a small margin. Customer numbers are up 3.2% and basket spend is up 2.9%.

"New acquisitions have had a significant positive impact on the result for 2025. We are pleased to report that all six sites acquired in 2025 are performing at or ahead of target, with the three sites acquired from the former Dobbies estate achieving sales increases of over 100% on the previous year. At Yarnton we have plans in place for significant development in early 2026. Barton Grange and Busy Bees (Isle of Wight) came on board later in the year and are trading in line with our expectations.

"Overall margin improved again in 2025, with all of the increase coming from the Garden Centres, driven by both improved bought in margin and our profit gap initiatives. We are particularly proud of the improvements in labour efficiency, as reported in the half-year trading update, which have continued into the second half with the result that labour cost to sales fell by 0.8% over 2025, despite the effects of last year’s budget in the UK.

"Our working capital has improved and the year-end cash position is ahead of budget, overall net debt is within our target.

"The consumer environment in the UK as we move into 2026 is far from strong. We are also unlikely to have such benign weather, so we recognise we will have to work hard to achieve sales gains, especially in the first half. We have plans for this, and we will benefit from the continuing additional contribution from recent acquisitions. Our intention is to build on the success of 2025 with another progressive year."

Yours Sincerely,

Neil McDonald

Group Finance Director & Company Secretary

Glee @ Spring Fair returns on 1-4 February

With just a few weeks to go, anticipation is building as Glee prepares to return to Spring Fair this February, marking its first appearance at the event in six years.

Hosted at the NEC Birmingham, Glee @ Spring Fair 2026 signals the launch of a refreshed spring edition – designed to support garden retailers earlier in the buying cycle while positioning garden products firmly within the wider retail landscape.

A curated mix of brands for early season buying

Timed to coincide with early season trading, the new spring edition brings together a carefully curated group of garden and outdoor living brands, giving buyers the opportunity to finalise orders, top up ranges and reconnect with suppliers, while responding to in-season demand. It also provides a valuable chance to discover brands they may not have encountered at Glee’s September flagship event.

Confirmed exhibitors include Botanica Intl Ltd, Fern & Forge, Green Tones, Hunter Stoves, L V Bespoke, Mr Fothergills Seeds Ltd, Rago Planters and Seed Revolution, delivering a diverse mix of products spanning seeds and growing, planters, outdoor leisure essentials and garden décor.

What’s on during the show

Alongside the exhibition, Glee @ Spring Fair will host a strong programme of activity designed to drive discovery, conversation and commercial opportunity.

Day two of the show, Monday, is set to be a key highlight, with the winners of the Glee New Product Showcase revealed. Celebrating the most innovative and commercially exciting new launches from this year’s exhibitors, the showcase will shine a spotlight on product innovation across garden retail. Importantly, the New Product Showcase will remain on display throughout the duration of the show, allowing buyers to explore new products in greater detail.

Monday will also see the highly anticipated announcement of Garden Trade News’ Greatest Christmas Awards. The hotly contested competition has once again attracted thousands of votes from garden centre customers, recognising those centres that went above and beyond during the festive season with standout displays, memorable events and exceptional customer service. With many shortlisted garden centres expected to be in attendance, visitors can expect an extra buzz on the show floor as the industry waits to see who has scooped the top prizes this year.

A central hub for networking and industry support

At the heart of the Glee @ Spring Fair experience will be the GIMA Business Village, acting as a central hub throughout the event. Delivered in partnership with the Garden Industry Manufacturers’ Association, the Business Village will provide a lively meeting point for networking and developing new retail partnerships, building on its record-breaking success at Glee 2025.

Further reinforcing the importance of Glee @ Spring Fair to the sector, the show has also secured the support of both the Garden Centre Association and Gardenex, highlighting the value of an early-season garden retail showcase for UK and international audiences alike.

The start of a long-term spring vision

As excitement builds for Glee @ Spring Fair 2026, it’s clear this return marks the start of something much bigger, as Matthew Mein, Event Director of Glee, and Autumn Fair, explains. He said: “With the show just weeks away, the momentum around this spring edition is really building. It’s been created specifically for Glee’s garden retail audience, giving them a timely opportunity to see new product launches, reconnect with key suppliers and fine-tune orders as the season takes shape. At the same time, it reflects the changing face of garden retail, where garden products sit confidently alongside home, lifestyle and gifting. Bringing Glee into Spring Fair allows us to deliver meaningful content and commercial opportunity for our core audience, while placing garden retail firmly within the wider retail conversation.”

Klondyke Group Ltd today announces that David Yardley, Chief Executive Officer, will retire from his role at the end of March 2026, concluding a remarkable 44-year career with the company.

David has been instrumental in shaping Klondyke into one of the UK’s leading garden centre groups. His leadership and vision have driven significant growth and innovation across the business, earning him widespread respect within the industry.

While stepping down as CEO, David will remain closely involved with Klondyke’s future as Non-Executive Joint Chairman, alongside Dorothy Gault, ensuring continuity and strategic guidance for the group.

The Board is delighted to confirm that David Abbott will succeed David Yardley as Chief Executive Officer from April 2026. David Abbott joined Klondyke in 1997 following the acquisition of Mayfield Garden Centre in Kelso, where he had worked since leaving school. His deep knowledge of the business and long-standing commitment to the garden centre trade make him ideally suited to lead Klondyke into its next chapter.

Commenting, Co-Chairman, Dorothy Gault says, "Obviously we're very sorry to be losing David Yardley as our Chief Executive Officer and, on behalf of all the family, I'd like to thank him for all that he has done to grow the company over the last 10 years in this role. We're grateful, too, for how well he steered the company through the challenges of the covid years.

However, I'm delighted that David Abbott is stepping up to take the company forward, he's an intelligent and talented retailer with extensive knowledge of the industry who has proved himself in his role as our Retail Operations Director over many years. We're confident the company will be in a very capable pair of hands and I'm looking forward to working with him more closely in the future."

Founded in the early 1980s by Bob and Dorothy Gault, Klondyke began as a single greenhouse operation in Kirkintilloch and has grown into one of the UK’s largest garden centre groups.

Today, Klondyke operates 22 garden centres across Scotland, Northern England, and Wales, trading under the Klondyke and Strikes brands. The company remains committed to delivering quality, value, and expert advice to gardeners nationwide.

David Yardley commented: "It has been a privilege to lead Klondyke for the past 10 years and to work with such a talented team. I look forward to continuing to support the business in my new role as Joint Chairman."

David Abbott added “I am honoured to be appointed Chief Executive Officer of Klondyke Group and to follow in the footsteps of David Yardley, whose leadership has left a strong legacy. Klondyke has an exceptionally loyal and dedicated team, and I look forward to working closely with colleagues across the business as we build on our strengths and continue to develop the business for long-term success.”

Garden centre market shows strong buyer demand

Specialist business property adviser Christie & Co has launched its annual Business Outlook report, which highlights a surge in transactional activity in the garden centre sector in 2025. Tom Glanvill, Director – Garden Centres, commented, “2025 was a record year for garden centre transactions at Christie & Co..."

Specialist business property adviser Christie & Co has launched its annual Business Outlook report, 'Business Outlook 2026', which reflects on key market activity, trends and challenges of 2025 and forecasts what 2026 might bring across the industries in which Christie & Co operates, including the garden centre sector.

The report highlights a surge in transactional activity in the garden centre sector in 2025, with Christie & Co recording an 29% increase in garden centre sales compared with 2024. This landmark year of activity signals renewed confidence and sustained buyer interest in the sector, with more than 50% of sites on the market attracting four or more offers. This rise in activity was driven by favourable trading conditions, strategic acquisitions, and successful re-letting of key sites.

Corporate operators dominated activity in 2025, with transactions involving Blue Diamond, British Garden Centres, and Otter Nurseries, while leasehold deals increased and accounted for 43% of Christie & Co sales compared with less than 10% in 2024, largely due to re-letting former Dobbies sites.

Looking to the year ahead, the report outlines Christie & Co’s market predictions:

  • Continued momentum with high transaction volumes expected in 2026
  • Corporate buyers are likely to dominate, however private investors and lifestyle buyers will remain active
  • Stabilising borrowing costs will encourage further investment and acquisition activity
  • Sustainability and technological innovation will continue to shape the customer experience
  • Diversification of services to future-proof businesses will rise

Tom Glanvill, Director – Garden Centres at Christie & Co, commented, “2025 was a record year for garden centre transactions at Christie & Co, with strong demand from corporate groups and private buyers alike. Our garden centre team continues to go from strength to strength, selling more garden centres in 2025 than the previous year, and we expect the sector to remain highly active in 2026.”

Charles Bentley announces major site consolidation to strengthen sustainability and operational efficiency

British heritage brand, Charles Bentley, has announced a significant consolidation of its operational sites as part of an ongoing strategy to enhance sustainability, improve inter-departmental collaboration, and streamline day-to-day working practices...

British heritage brand, Charles Bentley, has announced a significant consolidation of its operational sites as part of an ongoing strategy to enhance sustainability, improve inter-departmental collaboration, and streamline day-to-day working practices.

The company, a leading outdoor leisure brand with over 160 years of heritage, is centralising across two sites, enabling closer collaboration and greater operational efficiency across its long established headquarters located at Monarch Way. These activities are being carefully transitioned into Charles Bentley’s existing facilities at North Road and Jubilee Drive - both long-established sites already central to the brand’s manufacturing and distribution operations.

The consolidation focuses on making better, more sustainable use of the company’s current estate. This programme is part of a broader long-term optimisation plan that will continue to evolve over time.

Driving sustainability and better ways of working

The merge is rooted in three key strategic priorities:

  • Sustainability: Reducing travel between sites, lowering energy usage, and making more efficient use of existing facilities contribute to meaningful environmental benefits.
  • Improved Collaboration: Bringing teams closer together fosters stronger communication and better alignment between departments – a fundamental part of the company values as a long-standing family business
  • Operational Efficiency: Streamlined processes, simplified logistics, and increased proximity across teams help support efficient processes.

James Bentley, Managing Director at Charles Bentley said: “As a family business with more than 165 years of rich heritage, we wouldn’t be where we are today without our fantastic workforce. Our team is the backbone of the business, with some colleagues celebrating truly momentous anniversaries – a testament to their dedication and commitment.

“A key part of my vision for the future is creating a more connected, collaborative and forward-looking business, and this move plays an important role in that journey. One of the major drivers behind the relocation was the opportunity to integrate teams more seamlessly and strengthen inter-department collaboration. It means our warehouse staff have more face time with our finance and marketing teams, while office-based colleagues gain a deeper appreciation of the hard work that goes into getting our exceptional products to customers.

“By bringing our people closer together, we are building a stronger foundation for long-term growth. We hope this transition further amplifies our commitment to our people, to high-quality products and to excellent customer service, while also delivering important sustainability benefits as we lead the business into its next chapter.”

While the transition is ongoing, Charles Bentley expects the integration to unlock significant long-term benefits. Early indicators point towards more efficient workflows, improved cross-team collaboration, and stronger operational cohesion.

Charles Bentley is continually working to enhance its sustainability efforts and reduce its environmental impact. Merging sites is an important step, with additional sustainable initiatives set to follow as part of its ongoing long-term plan.

A friendly nudge, a well-timed reminder or a bit of encouragement to your industry colleagues could make all the difference.

Afternoon Activity Sponsorship – £1,000 per Game

The afternoon’s competitive activities are shaping up to be a real highlight of the day, featuring archery, axe throwing, laser clay shooting and golf.

  • Each activity requires eight sponsors: four garden centres and four suppliers. All garden centre places are now filled.
  • We’re currently looking for three more supplier sponsors to join Woodlodge, who is already confirmed as an afternoon activity sponsor.

Evening Wine Tasting & Quiz Sponsorship – £500 per Round

As the sun sets, following a delicious buffet, the fun continues with a lively wine tasting and quiz, hosted by Guy Topping ably assisted by Heidi Towse,.

  • There will be six quiz rounds, each co-sponsored by one garden centre and one supplier.  We’re delighted to confirm the following garden centre quiz sponsors: St Peters Garden Centre, Klondyke, Scotsdales, Castle Gardens, Bell Plantation and Ruxley Manor
  • Supplier quiz sponsorship opportunities are still available

At just £500 per round, quiz sponsorship offers a high-profile opportunity to showcase your brand while supporting a fantastic cause.

Tam Woodhouse, Chair of the Greenfingers Charity Fundraising Committee, said: “Sunday Funday has been a highlight of the GCA calendar for many years. It brings our industry together, sparks brilliant competition and raises vital funds for the children and families who rely on Greenfingers gardens. We’d love to see even more suppliers get involved this year. Your support genuinely makes a difference, and we can’t wait to welcome you to what promises to be a fantastic day.”

Get Involved and Support Greenfingers!

If you or your company would like to sponsor an afternoon activity, a quiz round, or both, contact Kirsty in the Fundraising Team by emailing: Kirsty@greenfingershcharity.org.uk.  She would love to hear from you.

RHS reports surge in houseplant sales in 2025

The Royal Horticultural Society reports a 15% increase in houseplant sales over the last year, outperforming bedding plants and herbs.

The Royal Horticultural Society reports a 15% increase in houseplant sales over the last year, outperforming bedding plants and herbs.

Searches for houseplant advice on the RHS website have also risen by 76% year on year. Leading the trend are Swiss cheese plants (Monstera) and dragon trees (Dracaena), prized for their bold, jungle-style foliage over more traditional architectural plants.  In addition, the RHS predicts Calathea, Ferns and Bonsai will continue to top the trends for 2026.

With houseplants continuing to grow in popularity following the huge surge in interest during the pandemic, the RHS Advisory Team, who received ten times more houseplant enquiries last year than in 2024, is encouraging growers to look out for common signs of plant stress, which are most prevalent during the winter months. Wilting, yellowing or browning leaves, leaf drop and poor flowering are among the most frequent issues, particularly during winter when overwatering, low light and dry air are more common.

Clare Preston-Pollitt, Horticultural Advisor at RHS Garden Bridgewater, said: “Houseplants are tender, tropical plants that don’t naturally live indoors. Our homes can be challenging environments, especially during the winter months, but most problems are easy to fix when you know what to look out for.”

The RHS advises gardeners to check a plant’s growing conditions carefully. Weak, leggy growth and pale leaves usually indicate insufficient light, while scorched or bleached patches suggest too much direct sun. Both under- and overwatering can cause wilting, so checking compost moisture is key. Temperature extremes, low humidity from central heating, nutrient shortages, pests and diseases can also affect plant health.

Once the cause is identified, simple changes, such as adjusting watering, moving the plant to a better position, increasing humidity, repotting or feeding, can help plants recover quickly. Damaged leaves can be removed, but those that are still mostly green should be left until fresh growth appears.

To help gardeners build confidence with indoor plants, RHS Gardens Wisley, Bridgewater, Harlow Carr, Hyde Hall and Rosemoor will host a series of hands-on houseplant events this month offering practical growing tips and expert advice as well as opportunities to purchase a variety of indoor plants.

Matthew Mein appointed Event Director of both Glee and Autumn Fair

Matthew Mein has been appointed Event Director of both Glee and Autumn Fair, ensuring each event continues to deliver clearly defined value for its core audiences while benefiting from closer strategic coordination.

Matthew’s appointment foolows the successful colocation of the two events. While both shows retain their distinct identities, communities and sector focus, the alignment creates a valuable opportunity to strengthen the overall second-half-of-the-year proposition.

Both Autumn Fair and Glee are currently tracking 20% ahead year-on-year, reflecting strong demand from exhibitors and buyers alike. In particular, Glee continues to perform strongly with its core garden, leisure and outdoor living community, underlining the importance of maintaining a focused and tailored offer for its longstanding exhibitor and visitor base. Collectively, the two events delivered an 8% increase in buyers in 2025, and momentum is already translating into future commitment, with 80% of the combined floorplan already sold for 2026.

Matthew Mein said: “Glee and Autumn Fair together represent a huge opportunity. Bringing these communities closer will allow us to create a more connected, dynamic and impactful event experience. The growth we’re seeing now, and the strength of the 2026 pipeline, makes this an incredibly exciting time to take the next step.”

Portfolio director Jackson Szabo commented: “With Glee and Autumn Fair coming together, alignment is critical, not just for the shows, but for the sectors they serve. Our ambition is to create environments that genuinely help retailers source better, plan smarter and build more resilient businesses. Matthew understands the challenges facing the industry and the importance of serving distinct communities well, and that’s exactly what we need as we look to support sustainable retail growth across the UK.”

Meanwhile, the organisers of Spring Fair have appointed Fay Tranter has been appointed as Event Director. Fay Tranter brings with her a strong and diverse background spanning B2C and B2B events, marketing, sales and event leadership. She has also worked within the West End, including a stint with Andrew Lloyd Webber, giving her a unique blend of commercial and creative expertise.

These appointments come at a time of sustained commercial and community momentum across both events, with strong growth already secured for upcoming editions and well into 2026.

At a time when retailers are navigating continued economic pressure, evolving consumer behaviour and rapid innovation, Spring Fair, Autumn Fair and Glee play a vital role in supporting the UK retail sector. As platforms for discovery, connection and commercial opportunity, the shows are increasingly focused on helping businesses of all sizes adapt, grow and thrive in a changing marketplace.

Fay Tranter said: “Spring Fair has an incredible heritage and a hugely exciting future. I’m thrilled to be joining at such a pivotal moment and look forward to working with the team and the wider industry to build on its strengths, embrace innovation and continue to deliver real value for our communities.”

Don’t delay – it’s time to get your application in for a Colegrave Seabrook Foundation Scholarship as the season is only open until 31st January.

Gaining a scholarship can be a useful boost to your bank balance, but it’s so much more than a financial aid, as Rebecca Gilroy from CAFRE college in Northern Ireland said: “What the Colegrave Seabrook Foundation does for young people in horticulture is so important. It opens doors, builds confidence and helps secure the future of the industry.”

Rebecca now works in the family retail nursery and landscape business and won a scholarship from the Foundation in 2024.

The application process is simple, easily accessible on line, and the awards, for a variety of scholarships all available this spring, could soon be making such a difference to your career.

Ross Dyke, studying for his BSc AgriTech at Pershore and also working as a commercial grower with Newey Ltd at Evesham told us: “I was lucky enough to be one of the Smart Garden Products scholarship winners from the Colegrave Seabrook Foundation. That award enabled me to buy essential equipment that I needed to help me with in my studies.”

Scholarships are awarded based upon ability, ambition and attitude and are not means tested. Funds are available to help with the costs of fees, travel, and the expenses of student life – in fact anything that will help you to complete your studies.

Emmeline Yourston, now a Glasshouse Nursery Grower at The Bransford Webbs Plant Company studied a Crop Technician apprenticeship at Pershore College while working, commented on her scholarship win in 2025: “Working right at the grass roots and supporting people at the start of their career journey, the Colegrave Seabrook Foundation scholarship has made a real and lasting difference to me.”

Grass Gains secures £300k funding to accelerate growth

Grass Gains, the fast-growing UK lawn care and plant nutrition brand, has more than doubled its business during 2025 significantly exceeding expectations and is now poised for substantial further growth after raising £300,000 from private investors...

Grass Gains, the fast-growing UK lawn care and plant nutrition brand, has more than doubled its business during 2025 significantly exceeding expectations and is now poised for substantial further growth across 2026 and 2027.

The exceptional performance has been driven by wider national distribution, strong consumer demand for premium, easy-to-use lawn care solutions, and the successful launch of Plant Gains’ new plant food range developed specifically to meet the needs of modern, peat-free gardening.

To support this next stage of expansion, Grass Gains has completed a second round of investment, raising £300,000 from private investors. The funding reflects strong confidence in the brand’s commercial momentum, product innovation, and long-term growth potential.

The investment will be used to accelerate distribution across garden centres, DIY retail, grocer and online channels, expand the product portfolio within both lawn care and plant nutrition, and strengthen operational capability to support increased demand.

Grass Gains has built its reputation on delivering products that genuinely perform for consumers while remaining aligned with the direction of travel in UK gardening particularly the shift towards peat-free growing and more sustainable, efficient inputs. The newly released plant food range complements the brand’s established lawn care products, allowing retailers to offer a joined-up solution for today’s gardeners.

Looking ahead, the business expects continued strong growth through 2026 and 2027, underpinned by new retail partnerships, increased shelf presence, and further innovation across core categories. With a clear strategy, proven demand and fresh capital in place, Grass Gains is well positioned to scale quickly while maintaining the quality, clarity and customer focus that has driven its success to date.

For retailers, the trajectory is clear, a high-growth brand, strong consumer pull, and an expanding range designed for the way people garden today.

HTA launches Spring content for ‘Your Garden Year’

The Horticultural Trades Association has launched the Spring phase of its ‘Your Garden Year’ campaign, a simple yet ambitious industry-wide framework designed to help gardeners feel confident, informed and inspired every week of the year...

The Horticultural Trades Association has launched the Spring phase of its ‘Your Garden Year’ campaign, a simple yet ambitious industry-wide framework designed to help gardeners feel confident, informed and inspired every week of the year.

Backed by a national week-by-week planner and a suite of ready-to-use Spring assets, the initiative brings retailers, growers, suppliers, and the media together around a shared seasonal approach to inspire gardeners and drive demand.

In an industry that watches the weather as intently as the markets, consumer behaviour can often appear unpredictable. Rain falls, heatwaves arrive and footfall rises and dips accordingly. But the HTA believes that while no one can control the weather, the industry can take far greater ownership of something that matters even more: the gardener’s journey.

First unveiled at Horticulture, The Conference in September, Your Garden Year was created by the HTA Retail Committee as a practical and positive response to one of the industry’s biggest opportunities: how to sustain the interest of the millions of “fine-weather gardeners” who emerged during lockdown and encourage them to keep gardening all year round.

Neil Grant, Chair of the HTA Retail Committee, said the solution lies in consistent messaging and timing rather than in relying on perfect conditions.

“During lockdown, the gardening public grew almost overnight by around two million, but many of those people were never fully established as gardeners. What garden shoppers often need is stimulus, ideas and information at the right time to nudge them along. If we can remind and encourage them throughout the year about what’s on offer, we can secure their repeat custom and keep gardening part of everyday life.”

At its heart, Your Garden Year is a national week-by-week planner that brings together key seasonal gardening themes - from early-spring seed sowing to midsummer colour, wildlife care, lawn maintenance and winter interest. The aim is not to dictate creative direction, but to provide a common seasonal pulse, ensuring gardeners hear consistent guidance across retail, online, broadcast and print.

Launching today, the Spring phase of Your Garden Year centres on the sales-driving theme ‘It Starts with a Pot’, encouraging gardeners of all abilities and with any size of outdoor space, to begin with container planting as a simple, accessible way back into gardening. Designed to convert inspiration into action, the approach supports increased basket spend across plants, quality compost, containers and accessories.

To support this, the HTA has released a free, ready-to-use resource packed with expert-backed assets for retailers, growers and communicators. These include specialist content toolkits such as Pots of Difference, Envious Hanging Baskets and Patios that Stun, with flexible copy lengths for use across blogs, websites, social media, in-store signage and handouts. The Spring launch also features coordinated Plant of the Moment promotions, with April focusing on Geums, Hardy Geraniums and Heucheras, followed by Nemesias, Argyranthemums and short Dahlias in May, alongside a dedicated social media toolkit and SEO guidance to help members reach more customers online.

Elia Johnston, HTA Director of Membership and Marketing, said the Spring assets were designed to help the whole industry move forward together.

“Your Garden Year gives our members a clear, shared structure and high-quality content they can make their own. By launching the Spring assets now, we’re supporting our members in getting ready to inspire customers at exactly the right moment and to present gardening as approachable, achievable and rewarding for everyone.”

The HTA also recognises the vital role of garden writers, broadcasters, and digital creators in shaping national gardening habits. For the media, Your Garden Year offers ready-made angles tied to seasonal milestones, access to expert HTA commentary and a clear framework to support editorial planning. An exclusive webinar for Garden Media Guild members took place earlier this week, ahead of the campaign’s public showcase at the Garden Press Event in Spring 2026, allowing journalists to pick up the themes as timely inspiration for the peak season.

After several years of change in how people garden and spend their time outdoors, the HTA believes Your Garden Year offers a constructive, collaborative way to strengthen gardening habits and build long-term confidence across the sector. As Neil Grant concludes, “Together we can keep gardening in the public consciousness all year round, restoring the rhythm of the gardening calendar and growing the market for everyone.”

Dobbies partners with Waves to offer car wash service

Dobbies Garden Centres has announced a new partnership with Waves, the country’s largest hand car wash and valeting provider. Five premium car wash facilities are now open at Dobbies stores: Woodcote Green, Ashford, Peterborough, Ponteland and Brighton...

Dobbies Garden Centres has announced a new partnership with Waves, the country’s largest hand car wash and valeting provider. Five premium car wash facilities are now open at Dobbies stores: Woodcote Green, Ashford, Peterborough, Ponteland and Brighton.

Last year, Dobbies launched an ambitious national store refurbishment programme, designed to broaden product ranges and elevate the in-store experience. As part of this initiative, the team is working hand in hand with concession partners to make the most of every inch of retail space. By listening to customers, it became clear there was strong demand for a convenient car valeting service.

Customers at Dobbies’ Woodcote Green, Ashford, Ponteland, Brighton and Peterborough can now enjoy the added convenience of having their car professionally cleaned while they explore the garden centre, relax in the restaurant, attend an event, visit the soft play area, or simply enjoy all the other reasons to spend time at their local store.

The partnership marks Waves’ first return to the garden centre sector in more than five years, tapping into growing demand for premium car wash services in a market now worth £1.8bn. Early results from the partnership are positive, with more than 7,600 washes undertaken across the five sites.

David Robinson, Dobbies CEO, said: “We’re focused on creating the best possible experiences for our customers, and this partnership with Waves brings a new service directly to our stores. The initial feedback has been extremely positive, and with so many of our sites offering convenient car park space, we see great potential to roll this out further across the UK.”

Joanna Graham, CEO at Waves added: “Partnering with Dobbies allows Waves to bring a convenient, high-quality car wash service to locations that truly suit our customers’ lifestyles. Garden centres are destinations where people can spend time, shop, and enjoy themselves, and we’re excited about the opportunities to grow this partnership across the wider store estate.”

Grantham-based Henry Bell & Co has started the year with a splash by becoming a main sponsor of the town’s RotarySwimarathon – an annual fundraising event to support local charities, clubs and organisations.

Now in its 37th year, the three-day Swimarathon, organised by the Rotary Club of Grantham, will take place from 6 to 8 February at the Grantham Meres Leisure Centre, where teams perform relay swims, backed by the community’s many schools, clubs and businesses, as well as family groups. It is the biggest fundraising event in the area, with more than 1,400 taking part and an army of volunteers.

“We are delighted to sponsor this fantastic local event,” said Henry Bell Managing Director Thomas Lee. “We are a company with an international presence, but we have also been part of Grantham for 200 years. Our place in the community is incredibly important to us and we are proud to give back to the town and the surrounding area by supporting an activity that does so much to help local causes.”

The RotarySwimarathon has raised £1,078,000 since 1990 and in 2025 smashed its all-time annual record to raise £55,000, which was handed out to 40 organisations, ranging from £150 to buy the local Brownie group a new tent to £4,000 for the Air Ambulance.

Bulrush sponsor 2026 BOA Technical Conference

Bulrush Horticulture, one of the UK’s leading growing media and substrate suppliers, is delighted to again confirm sponsorship of the annual British Ornamentals Association (BOA) Technical Conference next month, as it continues to support the next generation of horticultural professionals...

Bulrush Horticulture, one of the UK’s leading growing media and substrate suppliers, is delighted to again confirm sponsorship of the annual British Ornamentals Association (BOA) Technical Conference next month, as it continues to support the next generation of horticultural professionals.

As a firm believer in encouraging innovation in the growing sector and a long‑standing supporter of the event, Bulrush is proud to once again back one of the most respected technical gatherings in the ornamentals sector.

The BOA Technical Conference has become a cornerstone of the horticultural calendar, valued by commercial growers, researchers, technical specialists and suppliers for its practical insights, evidence‑based content, and collaborative atmosphere. Each year, the event provides a vital platform for sharing knowledge, exploring innovation, and addressing the technical challenges shaping modern ornamental production.

Bulrush’s Sales Director, Alex Julien says: “We’re really pleased to be sponsoring the BOA Technical Conference again this year. It remains one of the most important opportunities for the industry to come together, share what we’re learning, exchange ideas, and stay ahead of emerging developments. For us, the event is a natural fit, as it consistently reflects the technical priorities and challenges that our customers care about the most. With this in mind, supporting the conference aligns perfectly with our commitment to help growers succeed through high‑quality substrates, technical expertise, and ongoing innovation – and we look forward to the 2026 line-up.”

The 2026 programme will feature a full day of technical presentations, research updates, and panel discussions, covering key topics, such as sustainable growing media, resource efficiency, plant health, and advances in production systems. A bonus session will also take a closer look at the current state of peat-free growing, touching on market demand, costs, legislation and technical challenges. For growers navigating evolving market expectations and regulatory pressures, the conference continues to offer invaluable guidance and practical takeaways.

Bulrush Horticulture’s renewed sponsorship of the conference reflects its dedication to strengthening the ornamental horticulture sector and fostering collaboration across the supply chain. The substrate specialist’s involvement underscores its belief in the importance of shared learning and industry‑wide progress.

The substrate specialist also praised the BOA’s ‘under 35 for £35’ initiative that offers discounted places for attendees aged 35 and under, helping to ensure the conference is accessible for young professionals looking to build their future in horticulture.

Alex Julien adds: “Bringing new talent into the sector and supporting that next generation of horticulturalists is essential. Giving young professionals the chance to learn, connect, and feel part of the wider horticultural community is one of the best investments we can make in the future of the industry.”

This year’s event will be hosted at the NFU Conference Centre in Stoneleigh on February 4th, with a pre-conference dinner and annual awards evening set to take place the night before at the Woodland Lodge Hotel in Leamington Spa.

Tickets are still available and will be on sale until 23rd January, 2026, so book yours today.

Full details can be found on the BOA website.

PCA calls for comment on invasive weed competency framework

The Property Care Association is encouraging landscape professionals to help shape a competency framework which will provide a clear, evidence-based approach to demonstrating legal compliance in the management of invasive non native plants...

The Property Care Association is encouraging landscape professionals to help shape a competency framework which will provide a clear, evidence-based approach to demonstrating legal compliance in the management of invasive non native plants.

The Management of Invasive Non Native Plants Competence Steering Group, chaired by the PCA, was established to develop the framework in order to comply with legislation put in place in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire.

As well as defining the skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours required for key job roles involved in invasive non native plant management the group will also agree how competence requirements should be implemented, evidenced and maintained.

Daniel Docking, Technical Manager at PCA said: “The investigation into the Grenfell Tower tragedy recognised systemic failure, where individuals were undertaking safety critical work without a consistent or defensible way of demonstrating competence.

“The framework we are developing is designed to ensure that those working within the built environment can show they have the skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours required to undertake their roles safely and responsibly.

“Individuals and businesses concerned with the management of invasive non native plants routinely operate on live construction and infrastructure sites, directly influencing development decisions and land value as well as undertaking activities that carry clear legal duties.

“Biosecurity, waste handling, environmental protection and the use of pesticides are all subject to statutory control and assumptions of competence are no longer sufficient.

“The aim is to move away from informal or inconsistent interpretations of competence to an approach that will enable individuals and employers to demonstrate legal compliance, defend professional decisions and clearly evidence competence when challenged.”

The Management of Invasive Non Native Plants Competence Steering Group is one of dozens of groups working to establish competency frameworks across the built environment under the umbrella of the Competence Steering Group (CSG), which is supported by stakeholders across construction and allied sectors including the Construction Leadership Council (CLC).

PCA Chief Executive Sarah Garry said: “The requirement for those operating in the built environment to be able to demonstrate competence and compliance is now embedded within the Building Safety Act 2022.

“The Management of Invasive Non Native Plants Competence Steering Group is seeking feedback from people working across the landscape sector on the proposed competency framework to help ensure that the standards put in place are fit for purpose, practical and impactful.”

NP Structures to launch Constant Tension Retractable (CTR) roof system at IPM Essen

NP Structures will unveil its new Constant Tension Retractable (CTR) Roof System (Patent Pending) at IPM Essen, where the company will be exhibiting in Hall 7, Stand 7A28.2.

Developed to give growers ultimate control over natural light and airflow, the CTR roof system has been engineered for precision adjustment, rather than simple open-and-close operation. A constant-tension roll-off mechanism allows the roof to be positioned anywhere along its travel and held securely in place, even in changeable or windy conditions.

By maintaining constant tension, the system delivers a wider effective vent opening, reducing component requirements and overall cost. With the roller tubes positioned at the ridge when closed, venting starts at the apex, evacuating the hottest air first. This minimises the degree of opening needed to reduce internal temperatures and results in a more stable, predictable temperature response, even in variable wind conditions.

This approach enables growers to fine-tune environmental conditions throughout the day, adapting precisely to crop requirements, weather patterns, and seasonal variation.

“The CTR system has been in development and testing for 3 years and is now ready for deployment into commercial nurseries,” says Jack Wolfenden, Director at NP Structures. “The need for such a system was put to us from our long-standing customers who are looking ways to achieve both protected and un-protected conditions without needing double the footprint and labour needed to move stock. We looked closely at what was already available, then pushed the engineering further by focusing on achieving constant, controlled tension - something that has always been central to our identity as a greenhouse manufacturer."

By providing instant access to natural light and airflow, the CTR roof allows crops to be hardened off in situ, reducing the need to move plants, allocate additional hardening-off space, or increase labour. The durable roof covering offers 84.4% light transmission, supporting strong crop development while allowing exposure to be moderated as conditions change.

“What really stood out during development was how much control over temperature we can achieve,” adds Jack Wolfenden. “The automation paired with the ability open the roof in increments from the ridge down to the gutter really helps with finding the perfectly balanced climate for your crop.”

Visitors to IPM Essen will be able to see a live demonstration model of the CTR system on the NP Structures stand, showing how the roof can be positioned and held at multiple points along its travel.

Woburn Sands Garden Centre announces closure

Woburn Sands Garden Centre, near Milton Keynes, has announced that it is closing down, blaming “extremely challenging trading conditions” over the past few years.

The former Wyevale garden centre informed customers of its decision on its Facebook page, posting: “Recent government policies have made it almost impossible for businesses to survive. This has led to sustained financial losses, reduced customer spending, rising costs and extra tax pressures meaning the business is no longer viable. This is not a decision that has been taken lightly and it is one we make with real sadness.

“The garden centre has traded since 2019, and during that time we invested significant time and financial resources in an attempt to build a successful and sustainable operation. We explored every reasonable option to stabilise the business and sought further financial support where possible. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, continuing to trade is no longer possible.

“We are acutely aware of the impact this will have on our team and want to sincerely thank our staff, customers, and suppliers for their support over the years. This is not the outcome we wanted, but it is the difficult reality we now face.

Woburn Sands Garden Centre is currently holding a closing down sale, which started on Friday.

The social media post announcing the closure drew a response of more than 750 comments, many of which expressed sadness at the decision.

The business was originally owned by Wyevale and sold to investment and development company Rochmills Group in 2019.

Engineering for peat-free production

To reduce its environmental impact, a UK based manufacturer of composts and growing substrates, wanted to expand its peat-free product range. To achieve this, it turned to Technidrive, a specialist supplier of motors and drives, to engineer the system that would make it possible...

Peat extracted for horticulture  has the potential to release approximately 880,000 tonnes of CO2 in a single year — the equivalent emissions of driving to the moon and back 4,600 times, according to The Wildlife Trusts. To reduce its environmental impact, a UK based manufacturer of composts and growing substrates, wanted to expand its peat-free product range. To achieve this, it turned to Technidrive, a specialist supplier of motors and drives, to engineer the system that would make it possible.

Peat has long been a component in horticultural products, especially in potting mixes and composts for its water retention and nutrient properties. However, peat extraction contributes to the destruction of valuable ecosystems, releasing carbon and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

In fact, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, responsible for these sectors in Northern Ireland, has highlighted the potential negative effects of peat cutting. This includes the direct loss of biodiversity and negative effects on the hydrological system leading to localised flooding and repercussions on a national level due to the depletion of a significant carbon store.

The challenge

To produce eco-friendly alternatives of its growing products and mix substrates, the manufacturer began investigating peat-free wood-based material possibilities. Wood chips can be added to a compost pile to provide a better carbon nitrogen ratio and, with their rigid structure, also enhance the flow of air through the compost since they are less prone to compact.

Wood chip is a common byproduct of tree trimming and landscaping, which meant that the manufacturer could improve its sustainable practices by leaning on waste wood byproducts from local sawmills in Ireland, as opposed to importing the product.

As an alternative, it chose to invest in its own processing facility, by creating a brand-new wood fibre processing plant. The goal was to ensure its own supply of this material and significantly extend its peat-free range of products.

Technidrive was brought in to support with the creation of a complete system for the wood fibre processing plant. The set-up was required to transport wood chip to the feed bin, transfer it to a primary conveyor and pass it through the bottom extruder, before it emerged from the offload conveyors. This process can be compared to pressing modelling clay through a mould — the extruder shapes the wood chip into fine fibres resembling pulled pork, which are then blended into different compost products.

The primary challenge involved synchronising the system’s speed and feed rates with the  extruder’s operational capacity. Moisture levels, density and particle size of the raw wood could all vary, requiring precise torque and speed control throughout the process.

A key specification was that the equipment needed to transition smoothly from a low-frequency operation at 5 Hertz (Hz) to a significantly higher 100 Hz.  This was made possible by WEG's advanced technology in Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) using Optimal Flux technology, which allows the system to deliver 100 per cent torque at frequencies as low as 5Hz, without requiring external forced cooling.

This shift was crucial to ensure better control over the speed of process. Achieving this demanded meticulous evaluation of the extruder’s adaptability to changing conditions.

Product selection

Technidrive took a strategic approach to product selection. As a WEG Premier Partner and a BEST Partner of Italian motor manufacturer, Bonfiglioli, Technidrive had an impressive portfolio of products to choose from. For this project, WEG IE3 motors were chosen and fitted to Bonfiglioli Gearboxes.

Technidrive carried out calculations for power and speed and opted for two 0.25kW geared motors with a combined gear reduction of 6881:1 using High Efficiency Pre-Stage Helical and final output Bevel Helical Gear units. As a result, this led to a very low speed of 0.2 RPM but with a very high torque. This ensured a low and constant flow of product onto the main conveyor.

Lastly, two more Bonfiglioli gearboxes were also installed onto two large bins, each of which holds six tons of wood chip for the overall process. The gearboxes act as material beaters, creating a uniform flow of product onto the main conveyor.

“The project is a fantastic example of our team’s engineering knowledge,” explained Johnathan Johnston, internal sales and project engineer at Technidrive. “The state-of-the-art facility has been engineered with the best possible products from our industrial partners, ensuring the plant can manufacture environmentally friendly products in a smart and efficient way.”

Achieving sustainability

With a strategic blend of WEG products and Bonfiglioli components, the result was a system that aligns with the manufacturers goal to prioritise eco-friendly practices. IE3 rated motors with premium efficiency, resulted in energy savings and reduced operating costs but also, importantly, reduced CO2 emissions due to low power consumption.

Investing in a brand-new wood fibre processing plant, installed in June 2023 with production fully underway that same month, was a key part of the manufacturers sustainability journey.

The investment in the new wood fibre plant is a step forward in the manufacturer’s sustainability initiative. By reducing its reliance on peat and making greater use of locally sourced wood byproducts, the company is lowering its carbon footprint while supporting the regional economy. The installation supports the production of a wider range of peat-reduced and entirely peat-free growing media.

The new wood fibre processing facility will enable the manufacturer to produce greener and more sustainable composts and growing materials for years into the future.

Matt Bryant, CEO of Harvest Wildlife Products, says: “At Harvest, our commitment to providing the best for wild birds is rooted in our core values – values we share with the UK’s favourite gardening charity. We’re delighted to have worked with the RHS on these ranges and we’re sure that retailers, customers and, of course, wild birds, will love them.”

Cathy Snow, Licensing Manager, RHS, adds: “The RHS always aspires to enhance the joy people experience in their gardens. That’s why developing RHS-branded wild bird food blends and treats specially developed to bring more wildlife into gardens was a very attractive proposition – and working with one of the leading manufacturer of wildlife products in the UK has been a perfect way to make that happen!”
