B&Q aims for peat-free growing media range by 2023
B&Q says it aims to stop selling bagged peat-based growing media in 2023 to support efforts to tackle climate change.
The company first introduced peat-free compost in 1991 and stopped selling 100% peat in 2008. A range of peat-free bedding plants was introduced in 2014. “Throughout, we’ve been working with suppliers to improve the quality of peat-free composts and to secure sufficient volumes to achieve our peat-free commitment, whilst fulfilling our customers’ needs to enjoy their gardens,” the company said in a statement.
Over the last three years, B&Q has worked with suppliers to develop a peat-free formulation based on coir and other ingredients under the GoodHome brand, which was launched last year. GoodHome is offered alongside New Horizon and Pro-Grow branded composts, amongst others. All B&Q’s bagged composts have their peat content declared on the packaging.
In 2018 B&Q became the first retailer to remove neonicotinoids from its supply chain, and it has since stopped selling products containing metaldehyde and glyphosate.
