What an exciting new chapter for Gardman and its customers...
Gardman goes to Glee next month with a greatly enhanced product range following this summer’s management buy-out that has left the company in its strongest financial position for eight years. Chairman Jonathan Halford, who led the buy-out, says the new management structure, backed by private equity investor Rutland Partners, which owns Pizza Hut, Bernard Matthews and Maplin, gives the company a stability it has not had since 2007.

Headline news at Glee will be the introduction of a stock availability guarantee, made possible by an extra £5 million secured from the new backers for the purchase of additional stock.

Buyers at Glee will see evidence of the huge strides Gardman has made since the launch of its brand development strategy two years ago. This centres on four categories – core gardening, garden living, wild bird care & wildlife, and pet – with footfall-building promotions and quality products that encourage consumers to trade up.

Halford intends to recruit a new CEO to replace Stewart Hainsworth, who left in the spring. This move will complete a management team that already includes, Jason Richardson and Lolly Lee (Sales), Tim Goff and Henry Corbett (Category), Rebecca Griffiths (Marketing), Scott Kilshaw (Supply Chain) and Mark Little (Finance). Several senior managers have invested in the new business.

To help future growth, Gardman will be on the look-out for complementary businesses. Halford says Rutland Partners has substantial funds available for appropriate acquisitions.

Business as usual at Thompson & Morgan as owner considers future of the business

Despite interest in the business from new investors, Thompson & Morgan CEO Bryan Magrath says its business as usual. He commented: “It’s flattering to be considered an attractive target for investment but we remain focussed on our plans for the autumn season and won’t be distracted.”

Despite interest in the business from new investors, Thompson & Morgan CEO Bryan Magrath says its business as usual.

He commented: “It’s flattering to be considered an attractive target for investment but we remain focussed on our plans for the autumn season and won’t be distracted.”

It was announced this week that an improved performance and revitalised profitability have attracted a number of potential suitors towards the UK’s largest mail-order garden seed and plant company.

Current owner, Primary Capital, the growth company investor, has been approached by a number of interested parties and is now considering options for the future of the business.

Founded in 1855, turnover at Thompson & Morgan has more than doubled since the company was bought by Primary Capital. In recent years the company has consolidated its market leading position, with e-commerce revenue being over twice that of its nearest competitor. May 2015 alone saw 1.7 million visits to the award winning website, marking the best ever start to the spring season for the online specialists.

The improved performance of the past 12 months has been driven by a major focus on operational efficiency and exciting new product developments including the launch of Incredibloom® fertiliser, Incredicompost® and a new range of Van Meuwen branded seeds.

Thompson & Morgan has also made four key brand acquisitions in recent years (Van Meuwen, Rainbow Flowers & Gifts, The Vernon Geranium Nursery and Chempak Fertilisers) assisting in broadening the product and brand portfolio.

Time to discover the bestsellers of tomorrow

It’s that time of year when we all take a deep breath and start heading off for a month of shows and events that will shape next year’s trading and inevitably the GTN Bestsellers charts.

This week several UK suppliers have jetted off to the USA for the Chicago Trade Fair. Then next week there is Plantarium in Holland nd at the end of the week it’s off to Germany for spoga+gafa.

GTN will be taking a party over to Koln, courtesy of the organisers, so that we can announce and present The Greatest Outdoor Living Retailing Awards, the next instalment of The Greatest Awards on Tour for 2015.

After spoga+gafa it’s off to the NEC for Autumn Fair, to Four Oaks, and if you are looking for potential new food bestselling lines you’ll probably be popping into The Speciality and Find Foods Fair at Olympia from the 6th to the 8th of September.

Phew, it’s then only two working days and a weekend until Glee opens on Monday 14th September 2015. Judging by all the pre-show activity and the impressive list of new products being entered, this year’s show looks like being even more useful than last year.

If you are up for even more trade shows, on September 24th and 25th there is Lunch! at the Islington Business centre where we know several readers have found good ideas and inspiration for their coffee shops and restaurants in recent years.

And then to round off September we will be at HTA Futures in Oxfordshire on the 30th.  He we are keen to find out more results from the HTA Eye Tracking research that took place earlier this year in the planteria at Hilltop Garden Centre (we expect that to be worth the conference fee in itself) and of course present the final instalment of The Greatest awards ON TOUR 2015 after dinner that night.

I feel exhausted just having written about it all let alone attending many if not all of the events. Do let us know if we’ve missed anything though, we wouldn’t want anyone to have a quiet day or two.

Greatest Award winning Brookside Garden Centre have already started breaking records for Christmas 2015.

After a two week teaser campaign on Facebook they launched their on-line booking for grotto visits at 8pm on Tuesday. Within 20 minutes, Christmas Eve had sold out, the server crashed and then by midday on Wednesday 12 days of Christmas Grotto sessions were sold completely.

“We are now looking at adding extra days and even extending in the evenings up to 10 o’clock,” Simon Shead told GTN Xtra this week.

“It’s really good news because we can now plan for our busy grotto days knowing exactly how many people will be attending and when. It should also help us increase other sales, including coffee shop visits over the festive period.”

What Christmas records are you looking to break? Let us know and we will add you to our growing list of nominations for The Greatest Christmas Awards.
Wyevale call in specialists to streamline supply chain

Wyevale Garden Centres has appointed supply chain solutions provider RELEX, to streamline key parts of the business.

Wyevale began reviewing supply chain providers following substantial growth, and increased market position. RELEX, who won the business in competition with 10 other providers, will address key issues ranging from forecasting to promotions and stock replenishment.

Wyevale’s two product groups, general merchandise and horticultural products, include short-shelf life and rationed products. Both supply chains are managed manually and are highly pressurised environments, with many supplier constraints, rules and limited availability. Working with RELEX, Wyevale will begin to transition towards automating and improving these processes for higher sales and increased profitability.

Dan Zinner, trading director at Wyevale, said that with RELEX’s help, the company expected to see better forecasting, increased availability, reduced wastage and a more streamlined business process. . “The system will help us to better prepare for promotions and high demand periods such as Mother’s Day and Easter, ensuring we have the right product, at the right place, at the right time,” he added.

Mikko Kärkkäinen, group CEO at RELEX Solutions, said: “We understand the complexities companies like Wyevale Garden Centres face and have equipped them with the supply chain solution needed to enable operational efficiency, improved profitability and above all greater customer satisfaction.”

RELEX and WGC expect to go live with a pilot in September and fully roll out the system in the New Year.

GCA members see standards and profitability improve
The Garden Centre Association has revealed there were record numbers of members receiving highly commended awards and awards of merit after its annual inspections and these have helped drive standards and profitability. Sixty-three garden centres received a highly commended title and 150 received awards of merit.

Planters of Bretby were one of 10 garden centres in the Midlands region to be highly commended.

The Garden Centre Association has revealed there were record numbers of members receiving highly commended awards and awards of merit after its annual inspections and these have helped drive standards and profitability.

Sixty-three garden centres received a highly commended title and 150 received awards of merit.

Iain Wylie, GCA Chief Executive, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to see a record number of our members receiving the ‘Highly Commended’ award as a result of their excellent performance in our annual inspections.

“Our members tell us how beneficial the annual inspections are for them. As they don’t know when the inspections will be held it means they are always ‘on their toes’ in order to make sure everything is running to the highest level at all times. This ensures that customer service and retail standards are always of a high quality throughout the important spring trading period.

“If garden centres are scoring 75% or above, as well as increased standards, members will also see increased turnover and profitability, which is a real benefit of being part of the GCA. They can also benefit by using the awards for marketing their centres - in advertising, publicity, social media and on their websites - and this helps generate greater awareness and additional footfall.”

In order to receive an award of merit a garden centre must reach 80% or above in any given category in the inspections.

Iain added: “It is great to see more of our members receiving these awards and this is a clear indication that GCA membership is helping centres to improve year-on-year. Being an award-winning garden centre offers assurance to existing customers and helps to attract new customers too.”

Help us beat new agapanthus pests says RHS
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is calling on gardeners and the trade to help it learn more about a new insect that is attacking agapanthus plants...

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is calling on gardeners to help it learn more about a new insect that is attacking agapanthus plants.

The pest, which the RHS has named ‘agapanthus gall midge’, can cause deformity and discolouration of the flower buds of the plant, and in some cases cause the flower bud to fail to open. The severity can range from a couple of buds failing to the collapse of the entire flowerhead.

The tiny midge lays eggs that develop into maggots inside the individual flower buds or inside the closed flowerheads as they are developing. Infestation can be confirmed by the presence of small maggots, 1–3mm in length, which are a creamy yellow colour.

The RHS was the first organisation to detect the presence of agapanthus gall midge, in Surrey in 2014, through the RHS Gardening Advice service. This midge is established in other parts of southern England and is believed to have been present in the UK for at least two years.

A midge attacking Agapanthus has not previously been described in the UK or abroad, consequently, very little is known about the biology and life cycle of this insect.

RHS scientists anticipate that, by enlisting the help of gardeners, they can acquire more samples of affected agapanthus to help them learn more about how to combat the pest effectively.

The RHS is asking for samples of agapanthus flowerheads that may be affected by agapanthus gall midge to be sent to its science team in sealed containers. Photographs of suspect plants will also prove hugely valuable to the team leading the research into this midge.

RHS Entomologist Dr Hayley Jones says  the presence of agapanthus gall midge has been  confirmed at several locations across the country, so the need to learn more about the life cycle of the insect in order to combat its effects is increasing.

“We really hope that UK gardeners, who are often the first to spot new pests and diseases, join forces with us, Defra and international experts to increase our knowledge of this new and potentially destructive threat to agapanthus.”

Samples should be sent to: Entomology, RHS Garden Wisley, Woking, Surrey GU23 6QB. Images, with location information (particularly postcode) that will help the RHS map how widespread agapanthus gall midge is in the UK, can be sent to: advisory_entomology@rhs.org.uk

Gordon Rigg Garden Centres celebrate 70th anniversary
One of the north of England’s leading garden centres, with operations in Todmorden and Rochdale, is celebrating its 70th anniversary this month....

One of the north of England’s leading garden centres, with operations in Todmorden and Rochdale, is celebrating its 70th anniversary this month.

Gordon Rigg Garden Centres currently employs a 190-strong team across the two centres and their adjoining restaurants as well as The Bottoms Mill Shop & Cotton Weavers Café in Walsden, Todmorden.  Last year the company’s turnover hit £10million.

The business was founded by the late Gordon Rigg when he was just 26 years old.  He had worked for several vegetable and floristry firms in Halifax and in August 1945, the opportunity arose to take over a quarter-acre smallholding close to his home in Walsden.  However he had to raise £150, which was a fortune to Gordon in those days, to pay for two greenhouses and several cabins and sheds that occupied the site.  Gordon persuaded former employer Willie Shoesmith, who ran J W Shoesmiths Market Gardeners in Halifax, to lend him the money despite being sacked by the company a few weeks earlier for trade union activity!

Gordon grew and sold plants on the site and would cycle round the area selling them door to door.  He then opened a stall in Todmorden market which quickly grew into the town’s busiest greengrocers and florists.

In 1965 Gordon acquired five acres of land next to the smallholding and gradually developed the site into more than 60,000 square feet of retail space selling everything from indoor and outdoor plants through to garden tools, pet care products, floristry and gifts.  The company acquired its second garden centre in 1988 on Rochdale’s Kingsway and opened Bottoms Mill Shop & Cotton Weavers Café in Walsden in 2002. Gordon passed away in 2004 and the company is now owned and managed by his son Peter Rigg, his wife Pauline and their children Anthony and Fiona.  It was recently voted the North of England’s best garden centre by Which? Magazine.

Peter explains: “After 70 years it’s fantastic that Gordon Rigg continues to thrive as a business and we are still very much a family run firm that is built on the same values that formed the company’s foundations back in 1945.

“The industry has changed hugely over the years with the introduction of modern packaging making plant buying much easier and more convenient.  The demise of garden greenhouses also means customers generally prefer to buy fully grown plants, complete with flowers, rather than nurturing and growing plants themselves.  However, our Walsden site still operates an extensive traditional nursery, where we grow tens of thousands of plants every year, which sets us apart from many of our competitors and means we can cater for all requirements.”

Peter adds: “Today customers come from all over the North of England and keen gardeners will travel from across the UK to visit us.  People are continually surprised by our vast product range and the size of our garden centres.  This is particularly true at Walsden which covers a huge floorplan and often people can spend up to half a day with us shopping and enjoying lunch in our café.

The catering side of the business is continually growing and this was enhanced greatly when a highly successful bistro was opened at the Rochdale centre.  “

The business is currently investing heavily in its online presence.  “We’ve recently launched our fully redeveloped mobile friendly e-commerce site that we’re continually developing and this has the potential to become another big growth area for us over the next couple of years which is hugely exciting,” Peter said.

The South West Growers Show will be staged on Wednesday 7 October at The Matford Centre in Exeter, Devon, the organisers announced this week.

The show, now in its 42nd year, is aimed at growers and plant buyers ranging from garden centres and retail outlets to local authorities and the landscaping industry. It brings together key growers and suppliers of specialist horticultural equipment and services.

David Jackson, chairman of the show, said: “As a group of growers this is now our seventh year of running the show and we are really pleased that it continues to grow year on year. Victoria Cross poppy sales near £40,000 for the Royal Hospital Chelsea

Sales of seed of Mr Fothergill's Poppy Victoria Cross have now resulted in a massive £39,823 being raised for the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the home of the Chelsea Pensioners.

The Suffolk seedsman will continue to support the organisation until at least the centenary of the end of World War One in 2018. Mr Fothergill's donates 25p to the Royal Hospital's charity from every packet of 250 seeds priced at £1.99 it sells through its retail stockists.

Rachael Ferguson, corporate partnerships officer of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, was presented with a cheque by the company's David Carey for £15,360.75, the value of sales so far in 2015, when she attended Mr Fothergill's annual Press Day in August. She said: “The support of Mr Fothergill’s and their customers has been truly overwhelming. We are deeply thankful to them for helping us offer a fitting home and the highest possible care to the Chelsea Pensioners, the nation’s veterans.”

Mr Fothergill's commercial director Tim Jeffries commented "We are thrilled about our links to the Royal Hospital Chelsea. It an inspiration, from its caring staff and impressive setting to the Chelsea Pensioners themselves. Our staff and the nation's gardeners are committed in their efforts to raise money, and it is heartening that our retail stockists also want to know how much we have raised together for the cause".

The Royal Hospital Chelsea was established in 1682 by Charles II to provide a safe home for military veterans 'broken by age or war', the Christopher Wren-designed Royal Hospital admitted its first pensioners in 1692.  The scarlet tunics and black tricornes of its residents and the Royal Horticultural Society's Flower Show held in the Royal Hospital grounds every May are equally well known and respected around the world.

Food was a big seller in garden centres during July

Clothing and food halls/farm shops were on the up during July (2015) according to the Garden Centre Association’s Barometer of Trade (BoT) results.

An increase of 16.96% compared to last year (2014) was seen in clothing while sales in food halls/farm shops rose 13.97%.

Iain Wylie, GCA Chief Executive, explained: “It’s great to see non-traditional categories such as clothing and food halls/farm shops doing well during July. Joining the two categories in the top spot was houseplants, which saw a rise of 13.93% compared to 2014.

“Sales in outdoor plants up 9.09%, which is very positive considering the ever changing British weather we had through the month. Catering sales were up 10.38% and gifts up 11.14% so it was a good month for most categories.”

The BoT results are the only official GCA trading figures to be released.

Sally Cornelissen, Director at Burleydam Garden Centre in Wirral, which recently received the award for Best Garden Centre in the North West at the GCA’s annual inspections, said: “This July has been exceptionally good. We were concerned that the poorer weather compared with 2014 would be a challenge but strong performances from hardy stock, garden sundries and furniture sales coupled with the expected increase in catering turnover has delivered pleasing results.

“There is a definite rise in consumer confidence as illustrated by increased interest in high ticket items. We hope that this confidence will ride out hints of a rise in inflation in the light of the increase in minimum wage in October.”

The GCA BoT reports are compiled using actual sales figures and provide an up-to-date trading position statement. They are made available mid-month following the end of the prior month after all member garden centres have submitted their results.

Lauren Cocks, Marketing Manager at Coletta & Tyson Nurseries and Garden Centre in East Yorkshire, said: “We are seeing strong growth within our houseplant department, we have always struggled with strong competition from supermarket prices but it seems the tables are turning and customers are turning to garden centres to add colour and texture to their homes as well as their gardens.

“Catering is so important to our garden centre, people come just to visit our café now and it has meant we are no longer a garden centre with a café. To many we are a catering outlet in our own right. This means we have to keep improving our offering and keep it interesting for new and old customers alike.”

The BoT reports allow members to compare their trading positions with other centres.
