Let’s make this year’s Floral Thursday the biggest yet!

If you are visiting or exhibiting at Glee later this month, then this is your reminder to ensure you bring the flower power on Thursday 29th June.

If you are visiting or exhibiting at Glee later this month, then this is your reminder to ensure you bring the flower power on Thursday 29th June.

Thursday at Glee is now more commonly known as Floral Thursday, a special day when the industry comes together to raise funds for the Greenfingers Charity by donning their best floral get-up. Whether it’s clashing floral brights, giant flowerpot men outfits or teams with the biggest contingent of floral suits, dresses, hats, shirts or t-shirts, each year Floral Thursday gains more and more traction. This year the charity is hoping that even more will arrive at the show in their floral best. In fact, the quest for the world record attempt at the most ‘floral dressed’ in one place continues – can you help make it a reality?

Upon arrival at Glee on Floral Thursday look out for the Greenfingers raffle ticket sellers in the atrium, where a host of top prizes are up for grabs. By digging deep, buying some raffle tickets or popping a few coins, digitally or otherwise, in the fundraising buckets you will not only help make this year’s event the best yet, but you will be contributing to another amazing year of fundraising for the charity.

For those not in the know, the Greenfingers Charity creates amazing therapeutic gardens at children’s hospices across the country. For the life-limited children this might be the only outside space they can truly relax in and enjoy, whilst for the families, friends and staff Greenfingers gardens can be a place for reflection, a place to hold memories dear or a place of relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of the inside work of the hospice. Again and again, these Greenfingers gardens – almost 70 in total – prove their worth by holding significant personal value for those that use and enjoy the space. These are garden spaces that see the best and worst days, where lasting memories are made, and where goodbyes are said. The money raised through initiatives such as Floral Thursday helps the charity to build even more gardens for those that need them the most.

Linda, Petrons, Director of Fundraising & Communications at Greenfingers said: “With even more gardens in the pipeline and the average build cost rocketing beyond £100,000, every penny that is raised makes a real difference. Unlike other fundraising events that may require a feat of endurance or bravery, Floral Thursday is a fun and colourful way for everyone to get involved.

“As always, our thanks go to the Glee team for allowing us to use their platform to make Floral Thursday a reality. Each year the event keeps getting bigger and better and that is thanks to the wonderful support of Glee and its partners including Garden Trade News.”

So, what are you waiting for? Open the wardrobe, nip to the shops or get online to find your most fabulous floral outfit. The Greenfingers team look forward to seeing you on June 29th.

To find out more about the charity, throughout the show, the Greenfingers team will be in Hall 8-20 6J72.

As part of the P&A Group, the brand this year is supporting Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nurse charity as the company’s charity of the year for 2023 after a vote by employees.  Dementia UK is the only charity that provides specialist dementia nurse support through its Admiral Nurse service.  In just one of many challenges, a team of 14 employees are set to tackle the Three Peaks Challenge on June 30th and July 1st to raise money.

The team will travel from North Wales to Ben Nevis in Scotland on 30th June with the aim of reaching the summit that evening. They will then proceed to Scafell Pike in the Lake District before finishing up at Snowdon in Wales on Saturday 1st July. The aim is to complete all three peaks in less than 24 hours.  This will be a distance of approximately 23 miles with a total ascent of 3,064 metres, with a challenging fundraising target of £6,000 for this event.

Dementia UK is the latest in a series of high profile and also locally based charities being backed by Zest.  Over the last 13 years, Zest employees have raised more than £145,000 for a variety of charities alongside colleagues in the P&A Group.  These include the British Heart Foundation, Macmillan Cancer Support, Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith Children’s Hospices, Cancer Research UK, Action for Children, Alzheimer’s Society, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and Meningitis Now.

Steve Morgan, Zest’s Managing Director said: “Raising money for charity is very important to all employees.  We’ve already had numbers of people sign up for a variety of different fundraising events. From bake sales, bingo nights and personal fitness challenges to fancy dress events, and quiz nights.  We hope to beat this year’s £10,000 fundraising target.”

Melcourt hosts visit from Minister in Charge of Peat Policy

Melcourt were delighted to host a visit from Trudy Harrison MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary at Defra in charge of peat policy.

The Minister was keen to see a peat-free growing media manufacturer and it was a great opportunity for Melcourt to demonstrate their state-of-the-art facilities and to discuss many aspects of the supply of peat-free media to both the professional and amateur markets.

Volume availability of alternatives was high on the agenda for discussion. Melcourt’s Managing Director Andy Chalmers said, ‘In the very week that Melcourt celebrates its 40th anniversary it was an honour for us to host the visit from Minister Harrison. The issues of time-scales for the bans and the availability of alternatives are very pertinent to our business and it was good to be able to demonstrate that commercially competitive, successful peat-free production is not only possible but happening on a significant scale with our long-established peat-free media.’

LifestyleGarden will use SOLEX to debut new sales concept

Since its debut at the annual SOLEX exhibition, LifestyleGarden has been setting benchmark after benchmark for a new generation of environmentally responsible manufacturing...

Since its debut at the annual SOLEX exhibition, LifestyleGarden has been setting benchmark after benchmark for a new generation of environmentally responsible manufacturing.

From the groundbreaking DuraOcean® – SOLEX Best New Product Winner in 2019 – to the game-changing Nassau collection, with its exclusive use of Social Plastic®, or its first-of-a-kind partnership with the Eden Project, LifestyleGarden® has consistently worked to its own agenda without ever compromising on its value to retailers or end users. This SOLEX (10th – 12th July, NEC Birmingham) will be no different, as the brand brings to market an exciting new sales concept that will open up a multitude of new commercial opportunities.

What’s more, LifestyleGarden® will once again use SOLEX to continue the conversation around the importance of “Doing Business the Right Way” – a motto which the company lives by – as well as actively encouraging others to boycott greenwashing in favour of transparent processes and products that don’t just talk the talk but also walk the walk. Very few brands can boast such direct and complete involvement in all aspects of their business and product development, with LifestyleGarden® proudly manufacturing all products in-house with zero reliance on third parties. In fact, there is no part of the picture – from concept to delivery into store – that LifestyleGarden® is not proactively engaged with.

Paul Cohen, Commercial Director at LifestyleGarden® said: “There are lots of voices in the industry that are making significant claims regarding material innovation or sustainable manufacturing processes, but very few can truly back-up all aspects.  Whilst sustainability is a journey, not a destination, it’s important that retailers are aware of the difference and can truly look beyond the myriad of sustainable messaging to get to the heart of what really matters. At LifestyleGarden®we’re not just saying the words but we’re acting upon them. We offer transparency like no other and are firm advocates of placing the environment above all else. We truly believe in what we are doing, and know that our products, services and processes go above and beyond anything else within the marketplace today.”

Mix & Match to maximise sales

In a move to create a sales model that offers greater flexibility, LifestyleGarden®’s new ‘mix & match’ offering will be debuted at SOLEX 2023. This new way of thinking will reduce the need for retailers to stock multiple ranges. Instead, they can showcase products that enable consumers to shop configurations that best suit their needs and personal tastes.

From 2024, retailers (and consumers!) will be able to build their perfect furniture set, drawing from LifestyleGarden®’s extensive portfolio of table and chairs across the Topaz, Palau and Panama collections. With grey, black and coral sand options to choose from, these products are perfectly designed to seamlessly blend with one another or create sets that contrast with one another for maximum impact.

Paul Cohen, Commercial Director at LifestyleGarden® said: “We’ve come to realise that, often, consumers wish they could draw on different elements from key collections to create a configuration that best suits their outdoor space. Whether it’s adding more chairs, increasing the table size, or building a multi-functional set-up that gives them greater possibilities at home, our new mix and match options are the ultimate in flexibility. With countless possible configurations available, we have enabled retailers to increase their furniture offering without also having to increase allocated floorspace. It’s a game-changing concept and one we firmly believe will suit retailers, as well as the consumer’s pocket with more cost effective, flexible solutions.”

New Onyx chair launches

Having launched the DuraOcean® and Social Plastic® collections at SOLEX previously, it seems only right that LifestyleGarden® continues the theme and uses the show’s platform to introduce the next generation of sustainable furniture. Once again, the team from the Eden Project will be at LifestyleGarden®’s side so that, together, they can bring to market an exciting partnership driven by a passionate desire to showcase only the most sustainable innovations possible.

This year it will be the new Onyx chair drawing the crowds. Made from Social Plastic® – a Plastic Bank initiative that recycles waste material collected by those in the most vulnerable coastal communities in exchange for tokens that help lift them out of poverty – the Onyx chair will feature all the same environmental and social benefits, whilst also providing exciting new sales opportunities for retailers. Stackable, recyclable (including the aluminium legs), and with each chair utilising the equivalent of 155 plastic bottles, this new collection is perfect for both indoor and outdoor, as well as contract use. An aluminium matching table will also be manufactured to complete the look. The Onyx collection will be available in burnt orange, mint green, cream and sky blue.

Up, up & away – the Greenfingers Wing Walk is back!

An afternoon strapped to the roof of a plane might sound like a daunting prospect to most, but for seven lucky Greenfingers supporters it’s just another afternoon fundraising for the children’s hospice gardens charity...

An afternoon strapped to the roof of a plane might sound like a daunting prospect to most, but for seven lucky Greenfingers supporters it’s just another afternoon fundraising for the children’s hospice gardens charity.

Taking place on July 5th will be the second Greenfingers Wing Walk, an event firmly placed in the calendar by the intrepid wing walkers Vicky Nuttall (GIMA), Mark Portman (Evergreen Garden Care) and Lowri Walker (SBM Life Science) who first took to the skies in 2019, raising over £9,000 for the Greenfingers Charity. This year it is the turn of Phillippa Stubbs from British Garden Centres, AMES’ Lukasz Kulisa, Katy Thompson, Sam Jarvis and Poppy Jarvis from STV International, and Hornby Whitefoot PR’s Kimberley Hornby.  Also joining them will beLowri Walker, back for her second airbourne adventure

These brave supporters have vowed not only to raise funds for the charity but to face their fears and climb 600ft into the air, atop a 1940s Boeing Stearman biplane that was previously used to train pilots during World War II.

Supporting the wing walkers as they swoop across the Cotswold countryside will be the expert pilots from AeroSuperBatics, the team behind the Breitling Wingwalkers, a much-loved display act at UK airshows. On arrival at RFC Rendcomb Airfield, all participants will be briefed before being strapped to the top wing of the historic biplane. Wing walkers will then experience the roar of the plane’s 450hp Pratt & Whitney engine – the largest and most powerful engine operated in the UK for wing walking – with the propeller hitting speeds of up to 760mph at full throttle! Once the flight is underway, wingwalkers will only be able to communicate with their pilot via hand signals, as the plane performs daredevil flypasts, zoom climbs, steep dives and banks in front of friends and family. Greenfingers supporters are also welcome to come along on the day to encourage these brave souls!

Talking about why she has joined the wing walk, Hornby Whitefoot PR’s Kimberley said: “There is only one charity that could get me strapped to the top of a plane and that’s Greenfingers! I adore being part of this fundraising community and am endlessly inspired by how as an industry we come together to raise funds for the charity.  Being able to play a part in this and to contribute to 2023’s fundraising total is definitely something to be proud of and I hope others will be inspired to get out there, get out of their comfort zones and do something different all in the name of Greenfingers.”

To show your support for this year’s wing walkers please dig deep and donate via https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/wingwalk23.

Report details horticulture’s progress to peat-free

The latest Growing Media Monitor report highlights the horticulture industry's dedication to becoming peat-free...

The latest Growing Media Monitor report highlights the horticulture industry's dedication to becoming peat-free. Based on 2022 data, the report, which is developed annually by the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) and its specialist group, the Growing Media Association (GMA), the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), and the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), demonstrates a hugely positive shift towards more sustainable practices within the sector.

Key findings of the report reveal a significant decline in the proportion of peat used in environmental horticulture. In 2022, peat accounted for only 24% of the total volume of growing media, compared to 36% in 2021. The retail industry has shown remarkable voluntary progress in using less than half the volume of peat compared to the previous year. The percentage now stands at just 16.8% and is rapidly declining. This decrease is attributed to the collaborative efforts of UK suppliers, growers, and retailers in adopting peat-free practices.

Retailers have been increasingly specifying peat-free products, while manufacturers have improved their proficiency in producing viable alternatives. For the first time, the proportion of peat used in professional growing media fell below 50% in 2022, reaching 43.3%. Additionally, growing media used to produce nursery stock, pot or bedding plants suggests that roughly 16% of the professional commercial-scale production of trees and plants took place in peat-free products in 2022. The equivalent figure in 2021 was 8%, meaning peat-free production has doubled in the last year. This downward trend in peat usage reflects the industry's commitment to successfully transitioning to a peat-free future by the end of the decade. However, the report also highlights the complexity and difficulty of reducing the remaining 43% in professional use.

Wood-based materials, such as wood fibres derived from wood chips, have become the most voluminous ingredient in growing media, accounting for 35.5% of the volume of products supplied to the retail sector. Other alternatives, including bark, coir, and organic materials, have also increased, replacing the peat in the supply chain. However, the figures also indicate some challenges around consistency and vulnerabilities in the supply chain of peat alternatives for UK growing media. The report reflects some of the technical challenges manufacturers face in developing reliably performing mixes for specific types of plants and gardening purposes, such as specialist products for ericaceous plants. Importantly, 85% of finished ornamentals rely on peat to some extent.

James Barnes, Chairman of the HTA, expressed support for the industry's progress, stating,

"These results show the momentum of our industry in moving away from peat. The use of peat is dropping each year thanks to the dedication and hard work of the sector in working together and sharing knowledge from research and trialling suitable alternatives. But, we need support to get to the finish line in ensuring a successful and sustainable transition to peat-free practices without unintended consequences for horticulture and the environment.

“A scenario in which reductions in peat use by UK growers are offset by increased imports of plants produced in peat at lower cost and/or higher yield from overseas growers would effectively be offshoring the UK's peat use and damaging to UK horticulture and the economy. The horticulture and landscaping industry in the UK plays a vital role in the economy, contributing £28.8 billion to the GDP and supporting around 1 in 54 jobs in the UK economy.

“While the report showcases substantial progress in reducing peat usage, challenges remain to continue the momentum in removing peat from supply to retail whilst still satisfying consumer demand for gardening. Challenges such as lengthier supply chains for alternatives like coir contribute to increased costs in the supply chain. The industry needs sufficient access to alternative materials and the capacity to process them to meet growing demand. Failure to address these challenges may result in supply shortages and price inflation in the coming years."

Environment Minister Trudy Harrison said:

“It is great to see that suppliers, growers and retailers are continuing to work together alongside Government to decrease the use of peat across the horticulture sector.

“I am strongly encouraged by the steps which the sector is taking to increase the use of peat alternatives, such as bark and bracken and we will continue to provide support to the sector as the industry continues its journey to becoming peat free.”

The report underlines the importance of further research and development into peat-free and reduced-peat mixes to ensure a sustainable transition. The horticulture and landscaping industry plays a vital role in the UK economy, and access to high-quality growing media is essential for its success. Achieving a peat-free future is within our grasp, provided the right support is in place.

It is fantastic that BBC Gardeners’ World Live back this initiative, and we thank them for their support again this year.”

Plant of the Year

The Plant of the Year was awarded to Rosa ‘Peter’s’ Persica and is from HTA member Whartons Garden Roses, bred by Chris Warner and named in honour of the late Peter Seabrook who spotted it at Rochford’s International Rose trials in Hertford and went on to feature it in his popular gardening column in The Sun newspaper. It is fragrant with a red eye and vibrant yellow flowers, a repeat flowering patio climber. Judges said the special plant reflected the special talent Seabrook had for spotting a winner.

Other HTA members picking up accolades for Plant of the Year were:

Coreopsis ‘Chorasan Burgundy and White’ introduced by HTA member Volmary which was second overall and also won Best Perennial, with larger flowers blooming all summer long and suitable for larger pots and containers.

Dianthus’ Morello Star’ from Whetman Plants International was second, and Dahlia ‘Sincerity Bronze Orange’ from Allensmore was joint third.

Marquee awards

There were awards for BBC Gardeners’ World Live’s floral exhibitors too, including The Geoff Hamilton Award for Best Floral Marquee Exhibit, which was awarded to HTA member Grafton Nursery (Eucalyptus trees, Platinum award).

Passports, Permits and Peat top the agenda for HTA Policy at National Plant Show

The Horticultural Trade Association’s Policy and Public Affairs Team will be setting out the HTA’s successes and key policy asks at the National Plant Show 2023 next week (Tuesday, 20 and Wednesday, 21 June 2023)...

The Horticultural Trade Association’s Policy and Public Affairs Team will be setting out the HTA’s successes and key policy asks at the National Plant Show 2023 next week (Tuesday, 20 and Wednesday, 21 June 2023). Topics topping the agenda in their seminar session will be:

  • The HTA’s recent success in securing a two-year easement allowing GB Plant Passports to be affixed to retail-ready plants in the EU and the development of a new electronic system
  • CITES and the movement of endangered species across borders and the increased challenges, with cacti and orchids as two examples. This is an issue causing many HTA members to cease imports. Clarity and understanding are needed, including new steps to start to digitalise the system
  • Peat – updating on the latest from the UK government and the HTA’s position and discussing with seminar sponsor Sinclair the progress, opportunities and challenges of becoming peat free.

The HTA Policy seminar will be 10am on Wednesday, 21 June. Alongside this seminar, the HTA is seeking to brief and engage representatives from the sector on a range of pressing issues facing the breadth of HTA membership.

Jennifer Pheasey, HTA’s Director of Public Affairs, said: “The HTA’s policy and public affairs team is looking forward to engaging members on the latest on some of the industry’s critical issues. In May, the HTA was pleased to announce its success in securing an extension to the easement allowing GB Plant Passports to be affixed to retail-ready plants in the EU on behalf of GB Plant Passport holders. The new, fixed deadline of 30 June 2025 means importers have 24 months to put in place a labelling solution GB-side. This much sought-after outcome follows months of uncertainty and the HTA’s work engaging with Defra to set out sector needs.

“CITES has been a priority area for HTA in recent months, working with the UK CITES-responsible bodies to raise some of the challenges experienced by the sector and ambitions to see a number of improvements to user experience. This includes an increased speed in processing import permit applications for live plants and full digitalisation of the CITES application permit process. The NPS seminar will be a great chance to engage further to see how we can increase industry knowledge and educate the authorities on sector concerns.”

“Peat is a top issue for the industry. The HTA has long championed sustainable practices and supports the industry's transition from peat use, and much work has been happening to reduce it. The long-term impacts on Britain’s horticultural industry and the environmental benefits it delivers will be seismic and out of all proportion with the environmental gains of bringing in a peat ban a few years early – at a time when the industry is already demonstrating a year-on-year reduction in its use.”

Keith Nicholson, from Sinclair (Westland Horticulture), commented: “Westland and Sinclair are at the forefront of growing media innovation and performance. Our comprehensive product range consistently delivers the optimum growing technology to produce healthy, vibrant plants successfully. We are investing heavily in transitioning to sustainable, high-quality alternatives for all end-users. This transition needs time, support, clarity and full engagement from the government to be delivered effectively. Getting this right is critical in supporting our customers across the four corners of the UK. We are looking forward to joining the panel at the National Plant Show to share our experience.”

Tri-Star’s MD meets the Prince of Wales during Notpla visit

Tri-Star Packaging’s Managing Director met the Prince of Wales recently as part of the company’s commitment to working in partnership with Notpla and its innovative range of sustainable products for garden centres...

Tri-Star Packaging’s Managing Director met the Prince of Wales recently as part of the company’s commitment to working in partnership with Notpla and its innovative range of sustainable products for garden centres.

The occasion was part of Tri-Star’s support of Notpla and its pledge to drive innovation within the field of compostable and recyclable food packaging to help garden centre cafés boost sustainability.

Steve Norris, MD at Tri-Star, which supplies the garden centre industry with innovative disposable packaging, explains: “Notpla is on a mission to reduce the amount of plastic we throw away and to make disposable packaging more sustainable.

“In December, they were awarded the prestigious Earthshot Prize in the ‘Build a Waste-Free World’ category. The prize is designed to find and grow the solutions that will repair our planet during this decade and was founded by Prince William.

“The visit was made by His Royal Highness, who is also President of the organisation, to allow him to learn more about Notpla’s innovative seaweed-coating for food takeaway boxes, as well as meeting key distribution partners like Tri-Star.

“For many years, our mission has been to seek out, test and introduce a wider variety of more sustainable packaging. We are delighted to offer these award-winning, recyclable and home-compostable kraft food boxes, made with a natural seaweed-derived formulation, to our customers.”

Tri-Star Packaging has been supplying clients with Notpla seaweed-coated food takeaway boxes for almost two years now.

It’s part of its ‘Sustainable Future’ programme, which provides customers with more sustainable alternatives to traditional food packaging products.

Notpla’s products are unique due to the special lining made from seaweed that replaces the usual barrier coatings on foodservice products. Unlike PE and bioplastics, its coating does not require specific recycling pathways or specialised industrial composting equipment to degrade. It takes less than six weeks for it to completely decompose in a home composting environment.

In recognition of the award, Notpla’s seaweed-coated takeaway boxes will now feature the Earthshot prize logo.

Tri-Star Packaging is the nation’s top go-to expert for innovative disposable packaging. It works closely with clients to provide tailored products that offer fantastic food presentation, add value and increase sales.

Rose Peter’s Persica wins inaugural Peter Seabrook Award for Best New Plant at BBC Gardeners’ World Live

Rose Peter’s Persica, grown by Chris Warner and introduced by Wharton’s Roses in Norfolk, has been awarded the inaugural Peter Seabrook Award for Best New Plant at BBC Gardeners’ World Live...

Rose Peter’s Persica, grown by Chris Warner and introduced by Wharton’s Roses in Norfolk, has been awarded the inaugural Peter Seabrook Award for Best New Plant at BBC Gardeners’ World Live.

Rose Peter’s Persica is a perpetual flowering climbing hybrid with a fragrant, vibrant yellow flower and distinctive red eye. Shown for the first time at BBC Gardeners’ World last summer, the new rose will be on sale from autumn 2023 via Thompson & Morgan.

The hotly-contested new award was launched earlier this year by theColegrave Seabrook Foundation in honour of the late Peter Seabrook, and attracted 100 entries. Visitors to BBC Gardeners’ World Live can see Rose Peter’s Persica in all its glory, along with its fellow contenders, in an exciting new Hot Off the Potting Bench showcase display, located in the show’s spectacular Floral Marquee.

To be considered for the Peter Seabrook Award, plants entered must be new varieties, colour breaks or characteristics that improve on an existing variety, and not available for sale to the public before BBC Gardeners’ World Live opened on 15 June 2023.

Renowned horticulturalist, Jim Buttress, Chair of the Peter Seabrook Award for Best New Plant assessment panel, said: “The individual flowers of Rose Peter’s Persica really struck the assessment panel. They’re unique in a climbing rose and befit somebody who dedicated their life to finding something different.”

BBC Gardeners’ World presenter, Adam Frost, presented the award to Chris Warner at BBC Gardeners’ World today.

Chris Warner said: “Rose Peter’s Persica has been 30 years in the making, beginning its life as a desert rose in Iran, so I’m thrilled that it’s won the Peter Seabrook Award. It’s a climber but very easy to manage, growing to around eight feet and producing a column of colour that flowers from early June to late December.”

Peter Seabrook’s grand-daughter, Rachel, who attended the award presentation, said: “Grandad would have loved the excitement of BBC Gardeners’ World Live and the buzz that Rose Peter’s Persica has created. He’d particularly have loved the new rose’s bright colours.”

Runners up were Coreopsis verticillata Chorasan Burgundy & White by Volmary, a new variety with larger flowers blooming all summer long, and Vriesea Chocolate Girl, a new Vriesea bred by De Roose Plants with Don Billington of Every Picture Tells a Story.

Among the new plants and varieties entered for the Peter Seabrook Award were double pollen-free lilies, double Mandevilles, red sunflowers and black-fruited tomatoes. BBC Gardeners’ World Live visitors will be able to vote for their favourite new plant, with the Visitors’ Choice winner announced at the show on Sunday 18 June.

Plant expert, Nicci Gow, introduced some of the plants entered for the Peter Seabrook Award in daily sessions at the Let’s Talk Plants Stage at BBC Gardeners’ World Live’s Floral Marquee discussing planting and growing tips.

Bob Sweet, Horticultural Director at BBC Gardeners’ World Events said: “Plants have always been the stars of the show at BBC Gardeners’ World Live and visitors come to see and learn about new varieties. We’re thrilled for Chris Warner and for Wharton Roses that Rose Peter’s Persica is our first ever Peter Seabrook Award winner. It really is an honour for us to remember Peter Seabrook, who was such an important member of our BBC Gardeners’ World Live family, in this way. The new Hot Off the Potting Bench showcase is a wonderful tribute to the specialist growers and plant breeders that work so hard to develop and nurture exciting new varieties for gardeners to enjoy. We have no doubt that there will be Rosa Peter’s Persica popping up in gardens all over the UK very soon.”

GIMA Charity Golf Day 2023 – the results

Over 100 golfers enjoyed a fun-filled day of golf, networking and fundraising at the 13th annual GIMA Golf Day, with the Zest team walking away as course victors once again having missed out on the trophy at last year’s event.

Taking place at Belton Woods Hotel & Golf Club in Grantham, Lincolnshire, 25 four-ball teams tackled the Lakes course for the first time, which extends 6,776-yard and carries a par 72 handicap. Back as champions were the Zest team, who first scooped the win in 2021, with a score of 87.   Following close behind were the Durstons and Glee team with 85 points, and Leon Boot in third with a highly respectable 84 points. The winners of this year’s booby prize were Woolcool (Horticool).

Following a sunny day on the course, the players enjoyed an al fresco dinner and drinks before all the day’s awards and accolades were given out. An auction and raffle completed the festivities, together raising funds for the Greenfingers Charity.

The 2023 winner’s roster

A popular part of the course, the Beat the Pro hole this year saw eight golfers earn bragging rights.  They were Ben Walton and Charles Fairway from Woodlodge, Simon Bourne and Niall Mulcahy, both playing as part of the Westland South team, Derek Bunker, Tom Stolworthy of Treadstone, Jonathan Hirst from Team Hartman, and Gordon Cheeseman from Leon Boots.

The course also offered ‘nearest the pin’ challenges on holes 2, 5, 8 and 17, with John Birch, James Mitchell, Ron Craik and Colin Stephens winning on each hole respectively.

This year’s longest drive on the 18th hole came from Alex MacMillan of team Vitax. Finally, new-for-2023 were the best and worst pair scores, with Gordon Cheesman and Mike Lind from team Leon Boots taking home the highest score, whilst Bob Marley alongside Boyd Douglas-Davies were lovingly crowned ‘worst pair’!

In addition to the golfers who made the day such a success, the event was also kindly supported by a wealth of sponsors who provided raffle and auction prizes, sponsored the holes and even provided refreshments around the course at special ‘drinks holes’. Thanks to this year’s sponsors Smart Garden, RocketGro, Ninja, Meadow View Stone, Durston Garden Products, Hozelock, Zest, Premier Decorations, Woodlodge, SBM, Woolcool, Bathgate Silica, Decco, Hornby Whitefoot PR, AHS, and Imprint for their support. Thanks also to those who kindly donated prizes for the raffle, including Ninja, Maze, Fandango Fire Tools, Rollins, Elho, Capi Europe, Hozelock, Premier Decorations, Zest, Flymo, Clarins, Woodmansterne, Evergreen and Leon Boots.

Thanks must also go to the team from Smart Garden who during the auction paid for a team of 10 to work within a Greenfingers garden. GIMA Director, Vicky Nuttall, GIMA President, Jenny Douthwaite and Vice President, Kate Ebbens, were also auctioned off to Polhill Garden Centre, where they’ll spend a day on the shop floor. Finally, Woodlodge dug deep in order to ‘win’ Greenfingers Director of Fundraising & Communication, Linda Petrons, for one day. Linda will shortly join the Woodlodge team at their Tetbury site.

All money raised on the day will go directly to the Greenfingers Charity, with the fundraising total set to be revealed at the forthcoming GIMA Awards, which this year will take place on October 19th.

Speaking about the day, GIMA Director, Vicky Nuttall said: “I love how every year the GIMA Charity Golf Day develops. Whether it’s more golfers hitting the course, extra prizes for the raffle and auction, or brands vying for a sponsorship spot, it’s fantastic to see so many support the event. Whether it’s for networking or to support the fundraising for Greenfingers, I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone that got involved. It was a superb day and we’re already looking forward to the 2024 event.”

Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising & Communications at the Greenfingers Charity added: “On behalf of everyone at Greenfingers Charity, thank you GIMA for another fabulous charity event. Your generosity throughout the day and into the evening is hugely appreciated by us all but more importantly, the hundreds of children and families we support.”

Johnsons’ Quick Lawn with Accelerator is best lawn seed formula yet

Retailers cannot afford to miss out on the Johnsons Lawn Seed at Glee this month as they will be missing the UK’s oldest lawn seed brand’s most exciting lawn seed innovations for many years...

Retailers cannot afford to miss out on the Johnsons Lawn Seed at Glee this month as they will be missing the UK’s oldest lawn seed brand’s most exciting lawn seed innovations for many years.

Johnson’s Quick Lawn with Accelerator is the most popular seed on the market and is considered the very best in its category. It combines fine-leaved amenity ryegrass and high-quality red fescue offering tolerance to wear, close mowing and wet or dry shaded areas.  But that’s not the only thing in the box…

Johnsons has developed the hardest working lawn seed that makes it easy for consumers to achieve success with their lawns, bringing them back to garden centres to top up again and again on this superior product. So what is the secret behind this exceptional and first-rate lawn mix?

The grass seed

When consumers look for lawn seed, they want a formula that will guarantee fast results, optimum nutrition, resilience against the rigours of everyday life,  and easy maintenance. With over 100 years of experience in plant breeding and seed production under parent company, DLF Seeds is a trusted name in the seed industry.  Through these research programmes, Johnsons Lawn Seed is able to carefully select, cultivate, and rigorously test all of its grass species before combining them into suitable mixtures for domestic use that will tolerate the UK climate.

The fine-leaved dwarf perennial ryegrass and an element of fescue, are the key grass seeds in Quick Lawn and will give lawns a healthy, strong improved appearance. The quality and versatility of their ryegrass have been modified to have twice as many chromosomes than normal (diploids), giving them a deeper rooting and making the blades harder wearing. This also makes the grass drought tolerant - requiring just a third of the amount of water that’s usually needed for lawn establishment - with 38% more growth within the first seven days, compared to a non-coated seed.

The Accelerator coating

The latest Quick Lawn formula represents a significant evolution within lawn seed technology.  As well as the grass chosen, each seed is coated in a carefully formulated blend of biostimulants including seaweed extract, humic acids, amino acids, micronutrients, and root developers.

Quick Lawn’s seed coating is in fact a fertiliser, appropriately named Accelerator.  Accelerator contains nutrients and trace elements essential to the health and strength of the grass plants, including nitrogen, magnesium, potassium, iodine, and phosphate. As a natural tonic and soil conditioner, the extra magic ingredient is seaweed extract is also well known for its beneficial boosters for lawns. Grass seeds treated with Accelerator contain a wetting agent that also improves moisture absorption and accelerates seed growth by helping water penetrate the waxy surface of the seed.

As a result, lawns stay thick and green, and your tills ring as satisfied customers come back again and again.

Helping the consumer

Have a customer in the store that isn’t sure or confident about sowing a lawn? Johnsons keep it simple with QR codes added to packages, which, when scanned by a smartphone ensures customers can access information and clear instructions as quickly and efficiently as possible.  Not only this, the Johnsons’ packaging was given a revamp last year with enhanced visual elements as well as making concerted efforts to improve its sustainability credentials, with its recyclable cardboard boxes.

The updated packaging offers an array of helpful information on its website, as well as its in-store merchandising support This has heralded great results, acting as a silent salesperson to ensure greater sales success within the retail environment and making lawn seed a much better-understood product. Through this content, consumers can rest assured that no matter the question, Johnsons Lawn Seed will provide the answer in a friendly and informative manner.

Guy Jenkins, Consumer Manager at Johnsons Lawn Seed said: “The innovative mix of Quick Lawn is great news for retailers, with its revolutionary formula guaranteed to bring repeat sales. Quick Lawn is designed to continually exceed consumer expectations by delivering the highest-quality, most beautiful lawn possible. As a result, consumers can rest assured that every single seed variety in Quick Lawn has been carefully researched, evolved and selected by a dedicated team of specialists.”

Quick Lawn with Accelerator-treated seed is available in 210gm, 425gm, 1.275kg, and 4.25kg cartons, also in 10kg or 20kg bags.

Wyevale Nurseries launches 2024 promotional catalogue

Wyevale Nurseries will be launching its new promotional catalogue at the Horticultural Trades Association National Plant Show this month...

One of the UK’s leading commercial nurseries will be launching its new promotional catalogue at the Horticultural Trades Association National Plant Show this month...

Wyevale Nurseries’ 2024 catalogue includes seven new plant promotions and will be available to collect at the show at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire on June 20 and 21.

Andy Johnson, Managing Director at Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford, said: “Our team are delighted to be attending the National Plant Show once again this year. It’s a significant event for us and it’s a brilliant opportunity to meet our retail customers in person. We’re launching our new full colour catalogue, both printed and digital versions, at the show too.

“We find the majority of our customers still prefer to handle a catalogue in the ‘real world’. They keep it for more than a year and we know they find it an invaluable reference and resource. Then they recycle it when they no longer need it.

“Our 2024 catalogue very much reflects the latest trends that garden centre customers are looking for, such as plants that are suitable for smaller gardens and can be grown in containers on patios. There is also increasing demand for plants that provide food or a haven for wildlife and are easy to look after/low maintenance. Our catalogue inclusions are tried and tested performers that will deliver consistent results for consumers planting them out in their gardens.

“We’ve seven new promotions added to the range for 2024, including some of our entries for the New Plant Awards at the National Plant Show this month, such as the three-tone variegated Fatsia japonica Camouflage, and the nectar-rich Salvia Cuello Pink and Salvia Cuello White.

“Other highlights include Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year 2023 winner Agapanthus Black Jack, Agapanthus Poppin Star and Echinacea Sunseekers Hot Pink.”

The product selection available from Wyevale Nurseries is highly respected across the industry and its experienced team regularly introduces new, award-winning plant varieties.

Andy concludes: “We’re always looking out for the next big thing and to develop a range that suits the modern gardener and their requirements. We follow trends closely and understand the issues facing us all with regards climate change. Gardening with the environment and the protection of the planet in mind are key. We’re also always seeking alternatives for disease susceptible varieties.

“We’ve strong relationships with young plant breeders and lead the way in introducing new plants, which will be sustainable long into the future. Having a dedicated trials area allows us to continually assess and develop new varieties before they go to market.”

Wyevale Nurseries supplies garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners with a comprehensive array of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants.

Elena Whitham MSP plants a tree for her community as part of an HTA initiative

Following a recent Scottish Parliamentary event to discuss the Horticultural Trade Association’s (HTA) Environmental Horticulture Growth Strategy for Scotland, many MSPs pledged to plant a tree in their community.

The initiative is kindly sponsored by members of the HTA, and Eden Garden Centre in Dundonald is one of those supporting this good cause.

Elena Whitham, MSP for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley, visited her local garden centre to accept a Prunus Serrula, or Birch Bark Cherry Tree as it is commonly known, which will now be planted in the newly opened Netherthird Primary School in Cumnock.

Elena Whitham MSP, said: “I was pleased to support the HTA’s recent Environmental Horticulture Growth Strategy launch and was delighted to pledge to plant a tree for our community. I would like to give my deep thanks to Emma and Rob and their team at Eden for sponsoring the gifting of this magnificent tree, which was thoughtfully selected for its unique colouring and interesting bark patterns.

“This beautiful tree has now been given to the children at Netherthird Primary School to be planted for them to watch it blossom and grow along with them, as well as for all the community to enjoy.

“The horticulture industry is so very important for the environment, health and wellbeing and local jobs – and it is so very important for our young folks to enjoy and learn as much as they can about the industry from an early age.”

Ron, Director of Eden Garden Centre, said: “We are pleased to welcome Elena to Eden and are proud to sponsor her tree for this good cause.  We hope that MSPs and the Government will continue to engage with the horticulture industry.”

Horticulture and landscaping supported contributions of £2.8bn towards GDP and over 64,000 jobs in Scotland in 2019. This has the potential to rise significantly by 2030.

The HTA has been working closely with MSPs and the Scottish Government to produce the Growth Strategy, which has seven key ambitions for Scotland:

  • Health – To create a healthier Scotland through horticulture
  • Economy – Develop green economic growth, high-quality jobs and invest in education/skills.
  • Environment – To mitigate climate change
  • Local – Increase the use of Scottish and UK-grown plants as import substitution
  • Industry – Drive Scottish growth through investment, development grants and reducing the cost of doing business
  • Urban Nature – Produce a greener planning system
  • Biosecurity – Eenhance and protect Scotland’s natural capital.
Haskins becomes first garden centre to stock RocketGro liquid feed range

RocketGro has announced that destination garden centre chain, Haskins has become the first garden retailer to stock its exciting brand-new liquid plant feed range. The family-run business, with its roots in Dorset, will carry the full range of RocketGro’s concentrated bottled feeds across all five of its garden centre sites.

The exclusive deal means that Haskins is the first garden centre in the UK to list RocketGro’s liquid feed range, ahead of the products’ hotly-anticipated launch to market at Glee (June 27th-29th, NEC Birmingham) later this month.

RocketGro’s collection comprises five liquid concentrate feeds – Tomato Food, Rose & Shrub Plant Food, All-Purpose Plant Food, Ericaceous Plant Food, and Lawn Feed – all of which are now available to buy at Haskins Ferndown, Roundstone, Snowhill, West End, and Forest Lodge.

The listing is expected to be a big hit with Haskins customers, as the range provides gardeners with a truly sustainable and organic option in the liquid feed category at an extremely attractive price point.

The five liquid plant feeds are offered in 1.5 litre bottles, including a generous 50% extra free during 2023/2024. Vibrant, showstopping packaging really stand out on shelf, thanks to impactful imagery and a clear, compelling message.

All products are chemical free, 100% organic approved, British grown, sourced and manufactured, and are the by-product of renewable energy production. Packaging is also 100% recyclable.

Haskins Lead Buyer Garden Goods, Al Sheppard said: “I am very pleased to be able to launch the full range of RocketGro liquid plant feeds across our stores. Bringing sustainably-produced products, that are British made and organic, to Haskins is an important part of our buying strategy. RocketGro’s eco credentials are impressive and the values that they hold dear are a match for Haskins. The products themselves bring eye-catching design to the shelves, a value proposition to our customers, and an exciting back story that we feel our customers will understand and buy into.”

Haskins fully supports sustainable alternatives to traditional growing products, so that gardeners can continue to achieve success in their gardens and enjoy the wellbeing and health benefits that gardening brings.

Managing Director, Toby Thomas said: “We are delighted that Haskins has become the first garden centre business in the UK to stock our new liquid plant feeds. Having the full range of our organic liquid plant feeds in every Haskins store will make a big impact and ensure the products make an impression from the get-go and have a successful launch. The introduction of these new products is a pivotal moment for RocketGro that takes us a step further towards becoming a full-service growing media producer at scale. We are grateful to Al Sheppard for choosing RocketGro and we look forward to many successful seasons ahead supporting Haskins with RocketGro products.”

The brand-new liquid plant feeds will be officially launched to the rest of the market at Glee this month, joining RocketGro’s existing organic, peat-free line up, including its flagship Magic Mulch, UK’s biggest Tomato & Veg planter, and RocketGro’s impressive River Cottage-endorsed collection of composts.

RocketGro’s recent distribution deal with EP Barrus means that visitors to Glee can get an exclusive first glimpse of the new liquid plant feeds on both the RocketGro (6B50-C51) and Barrus (20D40-E41) stand at the show.

Novice Essex gardeners offered chance to create dream garden

Perrywood Tiptree has launched a brand new and unique ‘Garden Advice Service’. Perrywood created the service to help novice gardeners and new homeowners, but anyone is welcome to book...

Perrywood Tiptree has launched a brand new and unique ‘Garden Advice Service’. Perrywood created the service to help novice gardeners and new homeowners, but anyone is welcome to book.

A Perrywood gardening expert provides a one-to-one session, advising how to prepare the garden and recommending the best plants for their preferred style, soil type and aspect. Customers receive individually tailored advice, allowing them to choose the right plants and create their ideal garden.

Perrywood introduced the service after the plant area team observed that although plant displays inspired many customers, their limited knowledge meant they were still unsure how to start creating their own. They recognised that customers would benefit from dedicated time with an expert so they can ask multiple questions.

For example, a participant recently requested advice on creating a shady garden, (see before and after photo’s)

“We were having problems trying to find the right shrubs/perennials for this part of the garden as it in shade most of the day. We booked a gardening advice session to get some help. The plants we chose have been in for approximately 6 weeks are we’re really pleased with the progress so far.”

Other popular garden styles are wildlife-friendly or contemporary. Drought tolerant plants have also been a regular request.

More customer feedback confirms that the service has been top-rated so far:

“We learned so much, and the lady taking us through the plants was incredibly knowledgeable and patient!”

“I received some really helpful advice. My garden now looks amazing; it’s like being on holiday. Once established, the drought tolerant plants I chose will be low maintenance through the drier months.”

Tanya Mackintosh, Perrywood Tiptree Plant Area Manager, says, “We enjoy sharing our knowledge and helping customers to choose the best plants for their garden projects. We love helping Essex homeowners to get more plants in their lives and hope they will send us some pictures as their dream gardens blossom and grow.”

You can book a Garden Advice session via www.perrywood.co.uk/events. Sessions are usually available twice daily at 10am and 3pm, six days a week. The service is free, with a fully redeemable £5 fee to secure a space.

Wyevale Nurseries runs peat-free advice hub at National Plant Show

Wyevale Nurseries is hosting a peat-free advisory station at the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) National Plant Show for trade customers seeking assistance with the changes to the law around peat usage.

Technical Specialist for the Hereford-based commercial grower, Harry Downs, who has been overseeing the nurseries’ peat-free plant trials, will be at the show, running the advice hub.

Andy Johnson, Managing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, explains: “Earlier in the year we held our first retail customer forum and one of the key topics that was discussed was ‘going peat-free’ and the associated implications and considerations for this with regards caring for plants ‘Grown in Peat Free Compost’ – which is a new strapline we’re adopting for our marketing materials on this going forward.

“Following on from this, we want to provide a service at the Show where our current and future retail customers can come and ask questions and get advice about the changes in the law around peat usage and how it will affect them.

“Plus, more importantly, how they can best care for the plants they order from us, which are in peat-free compost, as they are proving to be a very different product, when they start being delivered to garden centres.

“We’re also producing a printed A4 flyer for the show to give our retail customers some information about peat-free plant production at Wyevale Nurseries. One side features facts and figures around our production and what we have learnt through our trials.

“On the reverse, we have shared a number of opportunities available to our customers to help address queries their staff and customers may have surrounding this matter.”

Wyevale Nurseries ‘Grown in Peat Free Compost’ advice hub will be at the grower’s National Plant Show stand 200/205, in Hall 1.

Wyevale Nurseries supplies garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners with a comprehensive array of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants.

For further details about Wyevale Nurseries, which is based in Hereford, please call 01432 845 200 or visit www.wyevalenurseries.co.uk.

National Plant Show’s ‘New Plant Awards’ – entrants launched via Touchscreen Kiosks to retailers

For the first-time entrants for the New Plant Awards at the HTA National Plant Show have already been added to the Joy of Plants’ PlantShare Library...

For the first-time entrants for the New Plant Awards at the HTA National Plant Show have already been added to the Joy of Plants’ PlantShare Library.

Retailers around the country can see these plants’ photos and details on their Touchscreen Kiosks and websites now.

Terri Jones, Managing Director at Joy of Plants, who is sponsoring the New Plant Awards, said: “This year, the HTA, along with growers and breeders, have made it possible for us to add the new plants to our Library in advance of the awards. This is fantastic progress. It means that visitors to our stand, #50, at the show can see how we instantly support such new plants via Touchscreen Kiosks, Bed Cards, Websites and Webshops.

“This is a real step forward in supplying plant information in a sustainable and cost-effective way to retailers. Retail staff can find out all about the new plants quickly and easily to answer consumer questions about them. Bed Cards, the ‘silent salesforce’, can be printed on demand as needed, branded to the retailer’s own livery. Webshops can be populated with the new plants with the minimum fuss. And growers and breeders can be sure that the correct images and data are being used to sell their plants.

“The awards provide a valuable role in raising awareness of new plants in the trade, and giving breeders and growers the critical feedback they need from judges and visitors alike.”

Joy of Plants’ mission is to make plant information easy and accessible to all. It has created a library of more than 15,800 UK garden plants and trees and offers a platform of tools to help garden centres, retailers, growers and breeders maximise their plant sales and income.

It provides this information in many products including an Image and Text Library for ecommerce sites, a Plant Finder for websites and Touchscreen Kiosks, and print on-demand Bed Cards.

Terri continued: “The National Plant Show provides a fantastic opportunity to see the best new plants coming from growers all over the UK and to meet the people who bring them to us. But if you can’t make it to the show, you can catch up with the new plants via the ‘New plants for 2024’ group we will add to the Plant Finders on leading retailers’ websites – Blue Diamond, Klondyke, Capital Gardens, Haskins, Tong, Bents, Perrywood, Aylett Nurseries, to name but a few.

“I’d like to thank all the wonderful breeders and growers who’ve made it possible for us to add their plants to our Library, including Wyevale Nurseries, Seiont Nurseries, Whartons Roses, Bransford Webbs, New Leaf Plants, Newey Ltd, Frank P Matthews, Ball Horicultural, Plant World, Plantipp BV, Javado, Raymond Evison Clematis and many others. They enter plant data once, and our retail tools then help every retailer sell their plants.

“I can’t wait to see all their new varieties in real life. Fortunately, Joy of Plants is on stand 50 close to the New Plant Awards, so if I’m not on our stand you’ll know where to find me!”

Annabelle Padwick to advise House of Lords committee

Upon invitation, Annabelle Padwick, the founder of Life at No.27, a horticultural therapy and mental health counselling provider in the UK, is to address and advise the House of Lords on the future of horticulture...

Upon invitation, Annabelle Padwick, the founder of Life at No.27, a horticultural therapy and mental health counselling provider in the UK, is to address and advise the House of Lords on the future of horticulture.

Annabelle Padwick will offer her expert insight into the current landscape regarding horticulture and mental health; leading with evidence-based knowledge and her recommendations towards future legislations. Annabelle aims to inform plans that will make a significant impact on the future of horticulture as she heads to the House of Lords to speak with the Horticultural Sector Committee. The committee, currently conducting an inquiry and report into the future of horticulture, will be seeking insights from Annabelle based her expertise and understanding of the mental health landscape within the UK and how this aligns with professional horticulturalists and hobby gardeners. The oral evidence session, titled "Horticulture and Mental Health," is scheduled to take place on June 22nd, starting at 11:30am and will be streamed live on Parliament TV.

As the founder of Life at No.27, Annabelle has gained recognition across England and Wales, including the support of the Prince and Princess of Wales, for her expertise and dedication to offering gardening based mental health support sessions for children and adults. Supporting those from as young as five years old within school settings and at bespoke built Life at No.27 therapy sites. Through her empathetic, creative humanistic approach, Annabelle and her team have given children the skills and confidence to share their emotions safely, learn new practical and mental skills and importantly, the option to stay in school education and thrive.

Life at No.27 have adapted their services like no other organisation, to ensure that new parents can safely attend with their baby and still receive mental health support in an outdoor, nurturing environment. Adults have grown in confidence and skills, to a level where they have been able to return to or approach full time employment for the first time.

The Horticultural Sector Committee's inquiry into the future of horticulture is an essential undertaking in exploring ways to ensure the sustainability and growth of this vital industry. Recognising the importance of how the isolating nature of working in horticulture can impact professionals’ mental health, as well the therapeutic opportunities that gardening can offer everyone, the committee invited Annabelle to provide oral evidence and be part of the report being curated.

Her insights and experiences will provide invaluable guidance to policymakers and industry professionals, shedding light on the critical role of professional support and evidence-based messaging in shaping the future of horticulture. Annabelle will be on an expert panel alongside a Professor of Change in Agriculture from Cranfield University and the Head of Natural Environment at the National Academy of Social Prescribing.

Annabelle Padwick, Founder, Life at No.27:

“I am honoured to have been invited to offer my knowledge and experience to the horticultural sector committee and be part of the enquiry report.

Whilst I'm one of the biggest advocates of growing your own produce and connecting with nature for our wellbeing, I want to assure my clients and readers, that I will go on to show you in the live televised discussion, that horticulture can benefit many people's mental health, but only if they have the right professional support alongside them too, as well as a safe environment to grow in.

Over the past few years too many people and brands have leveraged the gardening and mental health message for gain and uneducated 'helpful' messaging, with no professional understanding of the actual UK mental health landscape. No understanding of the impact this messaging has on individuals. Yes, it may help some, but this uninformed messaging is also negatively impacting vulnerable individuals in many communities. It’s also on occasions ignoring professional horticulturalists who work within the sector, isolated in their work and not receiving enough recognition and pay for their skills.

I hope that as a panel we will represent our communities clearly and honestly, we will push for change in future legislation's and ensure that what we say gives an accurate picture of the connections between horticulture and mental health."

Viewers can watch the event by tuning into Parliament TV's live stream, on Thursday 22nd June at 11:30am.

Three in five people want to remove astroturf

Environmental concerns are seeing Brits turn against installing astroturf in gardens and outdoor living spaces...

Environmental concerns are seeing Brits turn against installing astroturf in gardens and outdoor living spaces. Over half (58 per cent) of people who have astroturf in their garden want to remove it with 44 per cent of those people citing its negative impact on the environment according to new research from Churchill Home Insurance.

Almost one in five of those who have or plan to install astroturf (17 per cent) incorrectly assume it is better for the environment, despite the majority (61 per cent) understanding that astroturf doesn’t allow for wildlife and biodiversity to thrive and can contribute to water run-off and drainage issues. This can meaningfully impact outdoor spaces, particularly given most people’s gardens feature flowers and plants (71 per cent) and trees or bushes (63 per cent).

Of those with astroturf installed in their gardens or outdoor living spaces, one in four (25 per cent) noticed more water runoff patterns and drainage issues. This is likely due to astroturf being made of plastic, a non-permeable material which can prevent rainwater being absorbed by the soil in the same way as natural grass. One in ten (9 per cent) have noticed an impact on the prevalence of wildlife in their garden since installing astroturf.

A significant number agree that astroturf is not aesthetically pleasing, with 40 per cent of those without it installed admitting they do not like its appearance. One in two people (49 per cent) agree that astroturf negatively affects the overall aesthetics of residential areas and 45 per cent would go as far to support policies or initiatives aimed at discouraging the use of astroturf in residential gardens. Nearly half (42 per cent) of those with astroturf now say they prefer the look of real grass.

For those considering buying or selling a home with astroturf installed, one in two (50 per cent) do not believe it adds any value to the property.

Sarah Khan, Head of Churchill home insurance, said: “While the low maintenance appeal of astroturf was originally enticing to some, particularly those with pets, rooftops, balconies or small spaces, our research shows the astroturf trend has fallen out of fashion.  Astroturf’s negative environmental effect is important to consider, especially given the large number of Brits that enjoy otherwise natural gardens, featuring plants and visiting wildlife.”

Initiative to address greenhouse gas emissions

EDRA/GHIN, the global trade bodies for home improvement retailers, have launched a new collaborative taskforce to help the sector reduce its Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions..

EDRA/GHIN, the global trade bodies for home improvement retailers, have launched a new collaborative taskforce to help the sector reduce its Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions - those that come from retailers’ supply chains and from how their customers use the products they buy in their homes.

The following leading home improvement retailers from across the world have agreed to act as the founder members of the taskforce – Adeo (Europe, South America, South Africa) Bunnings (Australia & New Zealand); Cainz (Japan); The Home Depot (North America);  Hornbach (Europe); Kesko (Scandinavia); Kingfisher plc (UK & Europe); OBI (Europe) and Sodimac (South America).

For retailers, Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions make up more than 90% of their overall emissions. Given the scale of their impact, they are the most important, but also the most difficult to address, as they fall outside of retailers’ direct operational control.

There are a range of different approaches and methods used to measure and report on companies’ Scope 3 carbon footprints. This causes confusion and inefficiencies for retailers trying to lower their emissions across their value chains and creates an additional burden on their suppliers - the home improvement product manufacturers.

The EDRA/GHIN Scope 3 taskforce will aim to address this challenge by agreeing more consistent methodologies in how carbon data is treated through the supply chain and sharing best practices in both the reporting and, most importantly, accelerating the home improvement sector’s progress in reducing Scope 3 emissions. These learnings will also be shared with a wider learning group for all EDRA/GHIN members to benefit from.

Scope 3 spans the entire supply chain, and EDRA/GHIN Members will also be talking to our suppliers, on a pre-competitive basis, to see how we can encourage innovation and work towards a more circular and carbon efficient economy.

John Herbert General Secretary of EDRA/GHIN said: “Climate change is a threat none of us can afford to ignore. For home improvement retailers, this is a positive move where we can help them find ways to come together to address one of the fundamental environmental issues for our planet, while developing their business.

With 224 retail companies in 78 countries, what makes EDRA/GHIN unique is that we really can bring together so much of the world of home improvement to unite around this common threat. While we’ve held forums on what actions retailers are taking, announcing this at the 9th Global DIY-Summit, in front of hundreds of retailers and many of their suppliers, is a great way to launch this new initiative.”

Thierry Garnier, President of EDRA/GHIN and Group CEO of Kingfisher said: “As retailers, reducing emissions in how our products are made and used is our biggest challenge. But it’s also an opportunity. Many of the products we sell help customers afford to create better homes that are more resource efficient, using less energy and water. While a number of EDRA/GHIN members have been working on measuring and addressing their Scope 3 impacts in their own businesses, it is a highly complex area with many shared challenges. By coming together, hopefully we can find more consistent, simpler ways to drive down our emissions. I invite home improvement retailers from around the world to join us in this new taskforce.”

If you are a home improvement retailer and would like to join either EDRA, in Europe, or GHIN, the global network, please contact info@edra-ghin.org.

Agapanthus praecox 'HPP4087' (AMOURETTE SUPERB WHITE) awarded first Green Retail Award for Best Novelty

Agapanthus praecox 'HPP4087' (AMOURETTE SUPERB WHITE) has been awarded the Green Retail Award for the Best Novelty of PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt...

Agapanthus praecox 'HPP4087' (AMOURETTE SUPERB WHITE) has been awarded the Green Retail Award for the Best Novelty of PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt. The plant was submitted by Highland Potplants from ’s-Gravenzande. The award was presented during GROEN-Direkt’s Summer Days.

Agapanthus praecox 'HPP4087' (AMOURETTE SUPERB WHITE) produces an abundance of bright white flowers on many flower stems with many flowers in each inflorescence. The perpetually flowering plant keeps producing new stems. The KVBC jury was very impressed by the good presentation featuring small, but lavishly flowering plants of garden-centre quality.

Before the presentation of the award, fair director Linda Hoogendoorn-Veelenturf and fair manager Marjolein Wieckardt announced the new umbrella name of the inspections: the Green Retail Awards. With these Green Retail Awards PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt offers entrepreneurs a platform on which to place their innovations in the limelight. The Green Retail Awards comprise three categories: Best Novelty, Best Market Innovation and the Visitors’ Favourite.

“Novelties and innovation are very important for our sector, which is why we, as the organisers of this fair, aim to encourage such developments. These Green Retail Awards enable us to evolve the inspections into an internationally recognised contest in which we want the Best Market Innovation to be the spearhead,” said Marjolein.

Linda Hoogendoorn-Veelenturf added that the Best Market Innovation is a valuable award in which garden centre buyers and retailers are particularly interested. “The jury members are plant buyers from within and outside the Netherlands who assess the products’ marketability. Important criteria besides product quality and availability are e.g. sustainability, innovativeness and the degree to which the product meets a current market or target-group requirement. We also work together with a garden centre or retail organisation that forms part of the jury and offers the winners a platform in their shops on which to present their products to consumers. This year this is the Intratuin chain of garden centres. It will be a different international retail organisation each year.”

Fifteen plants had been submitted for this first summer edition of the inspection for the PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt Best Novelty, of which twelve were eventually evaluated. In addition to the gold medal for the Best Novelty, the jury also awarded three silver and three bronze medals. The plants submitted for the Best Novelty award are inspected by a jury of expert inspection committees of the Koninklijke Vereniging voor Boskoopse Culturen (KVBC; Royal Boskoop Horticultural Society).

The autumn edition of PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt will take place on 23 and 24 August 2023, from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. (4 p.m. on the Thursday), in and around GROEN-Direkt’s hall at the International Trade Centre in Hazerswoude/Boskoop (the Netherlands). For more information go to https://plantariumgroendirekt.nl/. The fair is exclusively accessible to professional visitors after prior registration via the website.

Following quickly in the footsteps of the National Plant Show, we will also be exhibiting at Glee the following week, where you will find us in the Green Heart, with a wonderful range of colour for on the day orders and new plants for 2024.

"We look forward to seeing both existing and new customers over the next few weeks!"

“June has been the polar opposite of last year with sales continuing to be strong”, added David Chilvers, Sales and Marketing Director. “Next week’s show will be a perfect point for us to take stock, catch up with customers old and new and start looking ahead with a plethora of new varieties that will feature in our 2024 brochure”."

The team from Zest of Alwyn Williams, Leon Barratt, Simon Davison, Jess L'Hanson regained the GIMA Charity Golf Day Trophy last week ahead of teams from Durstons + Glee and Leon Boots.

In total a record 25 teams took part in the Better Ball Stableford competition held on The Lakes course at Belton Woods in Lincolnshire on Thursday 8th June 2023.

Thousands of pounds were raised for the Greenfingers Charity during the day and in the post BBQ Charity Auction and raffle.  Sue Allen, Greenfingers Chairman said "Thank you all so, so much. Not just for what you've done today for Greenfingers, but what so many of you do in an ongoing way for us."

"Without GIMA and having days like this, where would we be? Nnext year it's our silver anniversary, and I like to think that together next year we will really celebrate our 25th anniversary as a charity."

GIMA Vice President Kate Ebbens added: "I'd like to thank all of you for giving your time today and to our annual charity Golf Day with Greenfingers as our main charity. Thank you for all those kind donations and to Andy Beswick for arranging the teams and for leaving Richard to do the scoring, and to Bob and Bill aka Bob and Boyd for tonight's raffle and auction. Without them we wouldn't have raised all this money for Greenfingers tonight.

"Thank you also to Vicky and her team for arranging an amazing day that each year increases. We had 100 golfers today, which is quite a record. We look forward to seeing you at Glee and our upcoming GIMA Awards in October and see you all next year. Thank you very much."

Rose Peter's Persica, which was discovered by the late Peter Seabrook during one of his many nursery visits was awarded the Peter Seabrook Award last night at BBC Gardeners World Live.

The rose was one of over 100 new plant entries into the "Hot off the Potting Bench" display organised by Nicci and Neil Gow.

Elsewhere at the NEC event, garden designers, floral marquee exhibitors and trade stands, including British Garden Centres readied themselves to make the most of the summer weather and the 90,000 expected visitors to BBC Gardeners' World Live that runs alongside BBC Good Food Show.

British Garden Centres, sponsors of the the Live Theatre dominated the retail area in side the NEC Halls with a large stand selling plants, garden furniture and a range of Westland garden care products.

Amongst the product suppliers using the show to raise awareness of their brands, Leon Boots are raising money for Greenfingers from sales during the weekend.

The Newson Health Menopause Garden was awarded Best in Show, one of many excellent gardens that were described by the judges and the organisers as the best ever.

There were plenty of inspirational garden ideas in the show gardens and the Beautiful Borders that visitors will be able to take home and many that any garden centres who visit can use to influence in-store displays.  Amongst them was the Showcase Garden of Glee New Product Awards judge Lilidh Matthews and her partner John Tallis.

The Best display in the Floral Marquee was awarded to Grafton Nursery for their display of everything Eucalyptus, its well worth a look for planteria inspiration if you get a chance.

And New Forest Hostas won an award for the best retail floral display with very accessible display units for their plants.

As the press evening drew to a close we met Sally-Ann putting the finishing touches to her Eco Seed Ball display which could be an ideal new product to add to sustainability and wildflower garden centre retailing.

Value garden centre Riverside in Hockley is celebrating its first 12 months since joining the Cherry Lane family. A huge transformation has seen the garden centre grow – its interior retail space is now double in size, the plant area has been expanded by 30%, and new departments and product ranges introduced to enhance the shopping experience.

The anniversary is being marked with an in-store competition for customers to win a £150 shopping voucher.

Cherry Lane specialises in high-quality, great value gardening products and is passionate about beautiful plants at amazing prices. Cherry Lane has created a larger horticulture offering at Riverside Garden Centre to offer customers a vast choice of the finest plants, shrubs and trees, as well as compost and aggregates, outdoor living such as garden furniture, solar lighting, home and gifts, all at spectacular Cherry Lane prices. A new Scallywags pet department has also been created.

While updates have been made around the garden centre, the much-loved Garden Room Café remains the same. Riverside’s well-established basket and container operation has also been continued, which complements the Grown by Us range cultivated in nurseries at four of Cherry Lane’s other garden centres. Riverside grows hundreds of plants for bespoke customer orders and general sale in the garden centre.

Cherry Lane retained all existing employees when it acquired Riverside. Currently, 60 staff work across the garden centre and café, including 15 new team members who have been recruited in the past year.

To mark 12 successful months of trading, Riverside is giving customers the chance to win a £150 Cherry Lane shopping voucher to spruce up their garden this Summer. To enter, customers simply need to scan their Cherry-Picked Rewards loyalty card or app each time they make a purchase from now until the start of July. More scans will mean more entries into the competition. Customers can sign up for a free Cherry Lane reward card in-store or by simply downloading the Cherry Lane Rewards app, plus they’ll also receive 10% off their next shop and other special deals including treats on their birthday.

The garden centre manager Dan Prince has been working at Riverside for over seven years, previously as horticulture manager. Dan said: “We’re very pleased with all the fantastic improvements made in time for our first birthday. As part of the Cherry Lane family, we now have so much more to offer including a vast new department full of top-quality plants and exclusive outdoor living ranges, while keeping all the much-loved favourites across the garden centre and café too. We can’t wait to welcome customers as they pop in to enter our voucher competition and celebrate with us.”

Harry Ketchell, operations manager at Cherry Lane Garden Centres, said: “As an independent family-run business, we were keen to continue the family ethos of Riverside while also introducing the great value shopping experience that customers expect at Cherry Lane. We are very pleased with the finished result - the team at Riverside has done a brilliant job in managing the transformation. We are very much looking forward to another busy year, with our full summer ranges now in stock. Customers can be sure that Riverside will be bursting with value in 2023 and beyond.”

The UK’s only value garden centre group, Cherry Lane was established in 2001. During the past 22 years, Cherry Lane has gone from strength to strength, starting as a group of three garden centres in East Anglia and growing to 17 across the country today, reaching from Suffolk to Worcester and Essex to Yorkshire. Cherry Lane now also has five of its own on-site nurseries, which cultivate the group’s Grown by Us range of homegrown plants that are sold across the business.

Riverside Garden Centre by Cherry Lane is located at Hayfield Lodge, Lower Road, Hockley SS5 5LE. For more information, visit www.cherry-lane.co.uk

The Colegrave Seabrook Foundation is benefiting from a substantial donation from Westland Horticulture, who have launched a Named Fund to assist the Foundation with their work supporting students studying horticulture.

Keith Nicholson, Marketing Director of Westland Horticulture, said: “At Westland, we are proud to invest in the future.  We recognise our responsibility in nurturing talented and passionate individuals and helping to promote the wealth of fantastic career opportunities in the horticulture and gardening industry.  Westland has always been forward-thinking, and it feels only natural to help young people grow their talents which will, in turn, help us to shape the future of our industry.  We are therefore proud to support the outstanding work that Colegrave Seabrook Foundation is undertaking to support students studying horticulture.  The newly created Westland Fund will offer essential support for students striving for a career within horticulture and provide the best opportunities today.”

Chair of the Colegrave Seabrook Foundation, Jeff Colegrave, added: “It is very gratifying Westland Horticulture understand the importance of supporting students who are studying horticulture. These students are the future of our industry and companies supplying any sector of the horticulture should be recognising that, directly or indirectly, their success is dependent on having well trained, committed staff, with a passion for horticulture, working either for them or their customers. We are extremely grateful for this support from Westland, which will help us to support even more students and assist with our ongoing work to promote horticulture as a worthwhile, satisfying and rewarding career.”

The Named Fund scheme, set up by the Foundation,  incorporates significant donations from companies and individuals. It is one of the ways to help support the work of the charity who, through colleges, are training students in horticultural skills to grow their careers in the industry. You too could be backing the work of the Foundation and to find out more go to ‘Supporters’ page of their website, talk to one of the Trustees or contact via info@colegraveseabrookfoundation.org.uk
