Tesco has appointed investment bank Greenhall & Co to sell its Dobbies Garden Centre business along with other non-core assets, according to Sky News.

It’s believed that Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis has hired Greenhall, a long-standing advisor to the company, to work on the sale of Dobbies as he focuses on reviving the core operations of Britain's biggest retailer.

Sky News sources said on Monday that Tesco also planned to sell Harris & Hoole, a chain of coffee shops it recently took full ownership of under an existing agreement with its other shareholders. Euphorium, a bakery business, is also likely to be closed.

Executives decided to close Nutricentre, a healthy living business, two weeks ago.

Dobbies was bought by Tesco in 2008, when the company was run by Sir Terry Leahy, the architect of its dominance of the UK grocery retail sector. It now has 35 garden centres across the UK, many of which are attached to Tesco stores, but recorded a  £48m loss in its 2014-15 financial year after writing down the value of its real estate.

A Tesco spokesman said the company did not comment on "rumour and speculation".

Scope for stockists to increase sales via up-selling with Meadow View Stones NEW POS

The need to inspire and educate the consumer to encourage spend has never been greater and with POS merchandising being an intrinsic part of this process Meadow View have re-designed their entire POS collection around this concept...

The need to inspire and educate the consumer to encourage spend has never been greater and with POS merchandising being an intrinsic part of this process Meadow View have re-designed their entire POS collection around this concept.

All their POS now features awe-inspiring lifestyle shots of their products featured in simple effective schemes which have been designed to inspire the consumer, and strongly promote cross sales into other relating product areas.

These engaging photos have been created to encourage the consumer to not only buy gravel but rockery stone, pebbles, cobbles and even plants.

This innovative POS is further aided by all the featured products’ suitability and benefits being listed in easy to read and legible fonts on each product board. Alongside this there are imperial and metric quantity tables, meaning all the relevant information is listed concisely in one place, to make the buying process effortless and instantaneous.

Each board also includes an image of the bag, making it simple for the customer to locate and identify the product in store. Furthermore each board has an individual QR code which links directly to an online help portal called go recreate which serves an excellent resource for how to use and lay the products, whilst showcasing inspirational gardening shots that help visualise which products will complement each other.

Stockists of the Meadow View Range of decorative aggregates, paving and stoneware are encouraged to think about linking products featured in each lifestyle shot to primarily make the buying process thought provoking and as simplistic as possible for the consumer which will strongly increase the potential of upselling into related product sectors.

Marketing Director Sarah Hill stated: “This is a very exciting time for Meadow View Stone and its loyal customers, who will immensely benefit from the increased sales potential this NEW POS is designed to capture.

"An increase in our stand designs and POS height also addresses the demand for better visibility of our products in store meaning they are no longer an after-thought for perusing customers."

For further details of our NEW POS range please contact our Sales Director, Simon Routledge on 078910 42537 or Head Office on 01948 841607.

Early Easter leads to March sales being up 8%

The second week of the Easter fortnight 2016 saw a peak in sales leading to the GTN Bestsellers Index of All Item Sales being up 8% on last year as a warm sunny spell allowed people to make the most of the first school holiday week...

The second week of the Easter fortnight 2016 saw a peak in sales leading to the GTN Bestsellers Index of All Item Sales being up 8% on last year as a warm sunny spell allowed people to make the most of the first school holiday week.

Now we have data for the complete fortnight the GTN Bestsellers team have been able to look back at Easter sales since 2009 to see if there are any useful indicators that could be fed into discussions about the fixing of Easter in the future.

We looked at the week-on-week uplift of the first Easter week each year, the total sales of the holiday fortnight as a percentage of the year’s total sales and then the post Easter week change in sales.  ‘Early’ Easter weeks are shaded in purple, ‘Late’ Easter weeks in yellow.

Our analysis indicates that the First Easter week uplift and the post Easter week sales are more driven by the weather than timing of the Bank Holiday. Even when Easter butted up against the May Bank Holiday in 2011 and 2016 sales dropped off.

The Easter data that does have some correlation with the date of the holiday is the sales over the Easter fortnight as a percentage of the year’s total sales. Apart from when Easter was in Week 16 in 2014 the importance of sales as part of the whole year increases. From a lowly 3.47% in 2013 when Easter was in Week 13 to a very significant 7.16% last year when it was  in Week 15.

From a GTN Bestsellers point of view, the best date for the Easter fortnight is weeks 15 and 16 ( that would have meant Easter Sunday being April 17th this year.)  Easter can then really shape the sales totals for the year, and it’s not right on top of the May Day Bank Holiday. Of course the weather would need to be great too, but that just needs some more research for another day.

How are you using your Easter sales performance to project your sales for the rest of the year? Our data could be used to predict year end sales of between 40% up and 2% down year on year. What factors will you be overlaying to make sense to owners, investors and set sensible targets for managers? Do e-mail us with your comments: trevor.pfeiffer@tgcmc.co.uk

GTN Bestsellers Top 50 sales volumes compared to the same week last year:

  • Garden Products – up 10%
  • Veg 2 Gro – up 12%
  • Growing Media – up 34%
  • All items index – up 27%

Two garden centres in London and Bucks to close

Two garden centres in London and Buckinghamshire are to close this year...

Two garden centres in London and Buckinghamshire are to close this year.

Leighton Buzzard Garden Centre in Bucks, opened in 1995 by Martin and Stuart Hammond, will close in the autumn. The brothers plan to retire to pursue other interests.

They said approaches from other operators interested in carrying on the £1m-plus turnover business had come to nothing and they could not justify the substantial investment required to develop the three-acre site. They said they would do all they can to help the centre’s two full-time and 10 part-time staff to find other jobs over the next few months.

Nine other businesses that rent premises on the site will continue to trade there. They include a children’s nursery, conservatory company, hot tub and pool supplier, aquatics centre, beauty therapist, pet shop, car wash, craft centre and dog groomers.

Phoebe’s Pet and Garden Centre at Catford will shut its doors in the summer after seasonal sales have finished. A stock sale is already being advertised on the website.

The centre started life as a nursery growing chrysanthemums for a flower shop run by a lady called Phoebe in the early 1900s and was developed as a garden centre by her grandson in 1978. A petshop added in 1988 was opened by Johnny Morris of BBC TV’s ‘Animal Magic’ fame.

The owners will continue their landscaping business but hope to sell the 9000 sq.ft.shop site.

Consumers slow to trust in contactless payment

Contactless card payments are not yet trusted by the majority of consumers, according to an online survey by business intelligence research consultancy Future Thinking...

Contactless card payments are not yet trusted by the majority of consumers, according to an online survey by business intelligence research consultancy Future Thinking.

The survey, conducted out by Toluna, asked more than 2300 people about their attitude to the system, which dispenses with the need for PIN numbers at the till.

More than 30% of respondents said they never pay by contactless because they don’t trust it, with men less likely than women to trust the system (by a margin of 6%).

Age plays a key role in usage – 22% of under 35’s never pay by Contactless compared to 43% of over 55’s.

Around 14% said they didn’t even know if their cards were contactless.

More than one in four thought the current limit of £30 per contactless transaction should continue to be the maximum for contactless payment.

Noreen Kinsey, senior research director at Future Thinking, said the recent huge increase in the number of purchases using contactless technology reflected consumer desires for quicker payment methods and increased convenience. But “as with all new technologies there is still some reluctance towards this technology, particularly amongst older age groups, who may be further isolated as we move towards mobile pay and other tech-enabled purchase solutions.”
French DIY and gardening startup ManoMano sets its sights on UK

ManoMano, Europe’s booming online marketplace for DIY and gardening equipment, is looking to take on the likes of B&Q, Homebase and other UK market leaders following a 13m EUR (£10.4m) investment.

ManoMano, Europe’s booming online marketplace for DIY and gardening equipment, is looking to take on the likes of B&Q, Homebase and other UK market leaders following a 13m EUR (£10.4m) investment.

Founded in France in 2012, ManoMano is the online market for DIY and gardening goods that connects the buyer directly with the seller.

The startup has over 1.8m unique visitors a month and 400k customers and has benefitted from a rapidly growing DIY market in its own country and on the continent. The French market currently sits at 30bn EUR and the European market has hit 280bn EUR.

This round of 13m EUR was raised by four European funds: Partech Ventures, Piton Capital, CM-CIC Capital Privé and Bpifrance.

ManoMano will invest 2m EUR in its UK business, which includes ManoMano.co.uk (launched in January this year) and team of 10 people.

ManoMano believes the UK market is ripe for disruption, and aims to attract customers with a wider range of choice, competitive prices and various community product features.

The only DIY and gardening pureplayer in the UK, ManoMano is looking to convince both wholesalers and retailers to join the country’s biggest DIY and gardening catalogue.

While UK sellers offer a maximum of 35k products and services online, ManoMano offers 150k products, from spades and stainless steel barbecues to the most specific, technical and esoteric pieces of DIY and gardening equipment even including full scale wind turbines.

ManoMano co-founder Philippe de Chanville said: "We’re delighted with the 13m EUR raised, which means that we can really focus on the 40bn EUR market in the UK. The British are world-renowned gardeners and DIYers, and so we think they’ll love ManoMano, which we like to believe is the online temple for garden and home equipment."

Co-founder Christian Raisson added: "We have a bigger range and lower prices than incumbent retailers. ManoMano also serves as an online community with forums, advice papers and messaging tools, so if you’re a professional, a hobbyist or a first timer you can find anything you want."

This new round of funding follows 600k EUR raised in August 2012, and 2m EUR raised in September 2014.

The startup is also looking to grow its existing operations in Spain and Italy.

Which? names T&M's incredicompost as best for seeds and young plants
Which? Gardening has named Thompson & Morgan’s peat-based 'incredicompost'  as best overall compost for sowing seeds and raising young plants...

Which? Gardening has named Thompson & Morgan’s peat-based 'incredicompost'  as best overall compost for sowing seeds and raising young plants.

T&M say they launched the compost, a blend of 80% Irish peat and 20% wood fibre, in March 2015 because  customers’ were incfreasingly disappointed with other blends on the market. The compost was launched alongside incredibloom® and incredicrop® fertilisers.

Which? Gardening gave incredicompost a score of 95% for sowing seeds, well ahead of the next best performer, which scored 80%. For raising young plants incredicompost scored 90%, leading to a Which? ‘Best Buy’.

Two seed varieties, antirrhinum and cabbage, were sown in the Which? trial and two plant varieties, fibrous begonias and tomatoes.

In another Which? Gardening compost test looking at container performance, incredicompost was listed as a recommended product.

T&M’s horticultural director Paul Hansord said: “We always knew we were on to a winner with our first move into the compost market. Our aim with incredicompost has been to develop a premium-quality product that brings consistency and reliability back to the market – something that has been missing since the increased use of green waste materials in a bid to reduce peat content in many well-known brands. Gardeners are keen to reduce their peat use but many have reported poor results with green-waste products.”

He adds: “To reduce the peat in our blend we have instead included wood fibre, sourced from Irish saw mills, actually making use of a surplus by-product. This wood fibre is graded by chip size, so each time we make a new batch we can guarantee consistency from our ingredients, leading to consistent performance from the compost, no matter the time of year or which ‘batch’ our customers are supplied from.”

Incredicompost contains trace elements, minerals, a wetting agent and a little pre-mixed fertiliser for early growth but is sold with a sachet of incredibloom for mixing in at planting time to feed plants for around seven months

When GTN Xtra checked online, typical prices were £9.99 for a 25-litre pack (very.co.uk) and £14.99 plus £4.99 shipping for 70 litres (greenfingers.com).

Full coverage of the compost trials can be found in the Jan/Feb 2016 and April 2016 issues of Which? Gardening.

Warwickshire plant pot company wins overseas business

Colourful plant pots created by a Warwickshire firm will be adorning gardens in Africa and continental Europe this summer after its unique designs were snapped up by overseas garden and homeware companies.

Colourful plant pots created by a Warwickshire firm will be adorning gardens in Africa and continental Europe this summer after its unique designs were snapped up by overseas garden and homeware companies.

Over the past year, Hum Partnership, which is based in Southam, has won, and is in the process of securing, about £50,000 worth of export sales less than two years after the business was set up.

As a start-up venture, using innovative manufacturing techniques and bringing an exciting new product to market, the company set out to make the most of its opportunities.

The firm asked for help and advice from UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) West Midlands when it attended a Start Up Global event two years ago as part of Export Week.

Since then, it has worked with UKTI to help it win new business overseas for its range of five-litre pots, which are made in the UK and incorporate UV inhibitors to make them fade-resistant.

Retailers in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Nigeria were so impressed with the plant pots, which are decorated in contemporary designs, such as bold stripes, modern geometrics, floral and paisley, that they have snapped them up.

As National Gardening Week begins (April 11-17) and gardeners across the UK begin to tackle their outdoor spaces in earnest, Lara Kelly, co-founder of Hum Partnership, said: “It’s been a real whirlwind these past few months and we are thrilled that our plant pots are not only decorating people’s patios and gardens across the UK but also overseas.

“Following demand from trade buyers, we have upgraded our production line so that it is fully automated, and UKTI has been a real help to us as we spread our wings in the export market.

“We are looking forward to extending our product range and growing the business over the next few years. Exporting has emboldened us as a company and I would encourage anyone who has yet to dip their toes in the export market to see what help is out there.”

Kati Hope, the UKTI international trade adviser who has supported and advised Hum Partnership, added: “When you spot a gap in the market, like Hum Partnership did, and create high-quality goods to fill it, it’s heartening to see the products fly off the shelves.

“We’ve been working closely with the company to help it access overseas markets and we’re very pleased to see how well it is doing.”

Businesses across the West Midlands who have yet to start exporting have the chance to explore the overseas opportunities during UKTI’s Exporting is GREAT Week, which takes place between April 18 and 22.

The main event – the Global Opportunities Summit – aims to inspire the next generation of new exporters from the West Midlands region.

Taking place at the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry, the free event on April 21 will see Fraser Doherty, founder of SuperJam, and Will Butler-Adams, the CEO of Brompton Bikes, reveal how their businesses have become global successes.

Emma Jones, the founder of small business support network Enterprise Nation and government Business Ambassador on international trade, will also be offering advice to first-time exporters.

Visitors to the Global Opportunities Summit will be able to find out about the thousands of live export opportunities that are available, and talk to Virgin Business Enterprise Support about start-up financing. Microsoft Gold Partner Warwick-based Zen Zero will also be at the event, demonstrating its app-building software and new devices.

The Global Opportunities Summit on April 21 is free to attend. To register, go to: http://globalopportunitiessummit.eventbrite.co.uk/
GIMA 'seed corn' award helps winner to first-year bonanza

GIMA’s Innovators Seed Corn Fund (GISCF), set up in 2014 to encourage new businesses, designers and innovators to enter the garden retail market, has helped its 2015 winner to unexpected first-year success...

GIMA’s Innovators Seed Corn Fund (GISCF), set up in 2014 to encourage new businesses, designers and innovators to enter the garden retail market, has helped its 2015 winner to unexpected first-year success.

Dan Robson, founder of Green Digit, was the recipient of last year’s £5,000 prize fund plus business support and made his debut at Glee 2015 to launch his SeedCell concept to the trade. Each seeds is encased in its own natural-pulp cell, packaged together to make a ‘wheel of seeds’, easily snapped off and pushed directly into the soil.

Glee, he says, has been pivotal for the business, which has snowballed ever since. “The GIMA team were really hands-on, introducing us to key retailers and influencers throughout the show. Of course we wanted to make sales and develop routes to market, but for us our main aim was to introduce the SeedCell concept to the market, possibly gaining some insight into how we can further develop our offering. Little did we know what impact our three days at Glee would have on our business.”

Since Glee 2015, says Dan, he and his colleagues have been on “a rollercoaster ride”. The concept for SeedCell was sown in June 2014, with the first finished item coming off the production line in July last year. Since then, they have launched a Christmas-themed SeedCell (grow your own Christmas Tree) and secured listings in more than 175 stockists. Homebase are to list it shortly, while B&Q are planning a trial across 120 stores. “These are opportunities we never imagined would be possible in year one of business,” Dan said.

SeedCell is now also stocked in Germany, Switzerland, France and Dubai and he hopes to appoint a distributor for the United States.

A move into new premises last September, fitted out with food-grade production lines, will enable further new product development, with vegetable varieties like courgette and cucumber in the pipeline.

“It’s safe to say that winning the GIMA Innovators Seed Corn Fund has opened doors for us that we never imagined would be possible at the beginning of our journey,” added Dan. “The award has not only been a great conversation starter with key retailers, but the business support that comes as part of the prize package has been invaluable. We are really excited about what the future holds for us, and have no doubt that the garden retail industry will be seeing a lot more from Green Digit and SeedCell!”

GIMA director Vicky Nuttall said: “It’s great to hear that the GISCF has played a part in this success story, however we can’t take all the credit – far from it!  The SeedCell is quite simply a great product. During the judging process for the 2015 GISCF, the judges were unanimous in their verdict that the product’s simplicity, coupled with the design and creative flair with which it had been put together, combine to create a concept that has been well thought out and delivers a finished, shelf-ready product all wrapped up in a competitive price point. Not only this, but the SeedCell is designed to make growing-your-own accessible to all, and firmly flies the flag for true British innovation with its proud ‘Made in Britain’ status. That is a lot wrapped up in a single product – an impressive feat that we are only too happy to support.”

Top centres join David Domoney's ambassador scheme

More than 150 garden centres, including some of UK’s leading destination sites, have now joined the Cultivation Street ambassador scheme.

More than 150 garden centres, including some of UK’s leading destination sites, have joined the Cultivation Street ambassador scheme.

Webbs, Bents, Hillier’s, Haskins, Barton Grange, Ayletts, Notcutts, Dobbies, Millbrook, Frosts, Scotsdale, Altons and Klondyke are among those who have already pledged their support.

The Ambassador Scheme was launched by Cultivation Street founder David Domoney at the GCA Conference in January. Domoney is now calling on even more garden centres to sign so there is national coverage of Ambassadors. “It’s a marvellous scheme that engages garden centres with their local community gardeners and school gardens,” he said. “It’s free to the garden centres and it carries huge weight with national publicity behind it.”

The scheme has the backing of the HTA, whose chief executive, Carol Paris, said: “The ambassador scheme puts garden centres at the heart of their communities and then continues to support them with regular newsletters advice, ideas and national publicity. The garden industry with Cultivation Street can make a real difference by encouraging and connecting with new gardeners”

To become a Cultivation Street Ambassador, the garden centre must nominate one member of staff to be the point of contact for their local community and school gardeners. The Cultivation Street team will support that member of staff with regular newsletters, briefing packs and advice on how build relationship with local gardening projects.

The scheme is designed to nurture stronger and more supportive relationships between garden centres and their local communities. It is part of the Cultivation Street campaign to promote community and school gardening, organised by David Domoney and sponsored by the HTA and National Garden Gift Vouchers.

The Ambassador Scheme aims to encourage garden centres to offer support and advice to local community gardening projects. In return, the communities will build closer relationships with garden centres and provide them with progress updates.

Garden centres can register to join at here

Deco-Pak to separate aggregates and birdcare at Glee

Deco-Pak is to separate its aggregates and wild birdcare ranges on adjacent stands at Glee this year.

Visitors will be able to see the company’s newly expanded Heritage Birdhouse and Wildlife Collection in full, including its specially designed merchandisers and brand new point of sale.

By splitting the two offerings, the family-run company is hoping to facilitate buying decisions for garden centre, department store and gift buyers.

Deco Pak’s general manager, Rod Slater, said: “The additional exhibition space is an extra expense for us - but one we are confident will allow us to provide visitors with the best possible experience. The introduction of our birdhouse range in 2013 was a risky move away from our core aggregate business but it has more than proved to have been a savvy decision. We now have a product offering that stretches across a range of retailers – from garden centres and builders merchants, to department stores, supermarkets and gift stores – helping us to further build our profits and long-term future.

“Trade shows like Glee are all about showcasing products as they might be sold. For retailers it will be much better for them to view the ranges separately, as they would in-store, making buying decisions that much easier. Our goal this year is to make sure our retail partners choose the right ranges to suit their business, pick up inspiration from our examples of retail theatre and generally get more out of the show than ever before.”

With the UEFA European Championship 2016 just around the corner, Johnson Lawn Seed has launched its exclusive ‘2016’ lawn seed mix, specifically designed to help create the perfect pitch for future Rooneys, Messis, or Ronaldos, and at the same time help boost summer sales for retailers.

‘2016’ offers the same varieties of grass supplied to the majority of the Euro 2016 stadia and gives customers the chance to convert their garden into their own football pitch. It also provides the ideal opportunity for retailers to make the most of the football frenzy being whipped up ahead of the UEFA Euro Football Finals – and it’s not too late for retailers to start getting involved now as part of the build-up to the summer’s biggest sporting event, as the whole country succumbs to football fever once again.

Johnsons Lawn Seed’s consumer manager Guy Jenkins said: “Euro 2016 represents a great sales opportunity for retailers – quite often sporting events can detract from time spent in the garden but with the year’s most exciting sporting event just around the corner, we are offering something unique, which is fantastic for football fans as well retailers. It’s a great opportunity for garden centres and other key retailers in the sector to have fun with merchandising and POS, while at the same time driving impulse sales.”

High-tech BBQ boost for Premier Decorations
Barbecue cooking is all the rage in the UK and whilst simple kettle and drum style appliances remain hugely popular, all singing and dancing, high tech multi-function models are increasing in demand...

Barbecue cooking is all the rage in the UK and whilst simple kettle and drum style appliances remain hugely popular, all singing and dancing, high tech multi-function models are increasing in demand.

Pravin Patel of Premier Decorations, which specialises in every type of barbecue, explains: “People in the UK are fast adopting Mediterranean lifestyles and cooking and eating outdoors is becoming part of everyday living. This means that families are investing in top end, permanent outdoor cooking appliances which are completely versatile and can be used the whole year round.”

Premier’s Fontana Forni range of outdoor ovens are a prime example and the Fontana Pizza and Cucina is a multi function wood burning oven combining traditions from around the world in just one product. This appliance is a barbecue, oven, grill and smoker and efficiently cooks with either charcoal or wood providing a professional result every time. Made from anthracite painted galvanized steel and stainless steel the FontanaPizza and Cucina is easy to light thanks to a combustion chamber specifically created to facilitate the operation and ensure a steady and uniform heat distribution. It is alsopossible to adjust the intensity of the flame and a practical system for ash recovery and disposal makes cleaning easy.

For those who want instant outdoor cooking at the touch of a button, Premier’s Fontanagas fired ovens are the ideal solution. The Margherita Pizza Oven is just as aesthetically pleasing as the Pizza and Cucina, but cooking is done by direct contact with gas fired burners. The stainless steel structure of the chamber allows the oven to reach the desired temperature in just a few minutes.

For the traditionalist, there is also a range of both Direct and Indirect wood burning ovens available.

Pravin continues: “High tech outdoor ovens not only provide a professional and efficient method of cooking but make the most of outdoor space bringing the garden into the home. Owning an appliance like this makes a real fashion statement allowing families to enjoy cooking and dining outside and bring a little bit of the Mediterranean culture to the British home.”

For more information about Premier’s range of indoor and outdoor lighting solutions email: sales@premierdec.com or call 020 8624 5555.

Blood pressure check with that, sir?

Squire’s Garden Centre in Twickenham is supporting Stroke Awareness Day this month by offering free blood pressure checks.

The Stroke Association in conjunction with the local Rotary Club will offer the checks to customers visiting the site on 24 April in a bid to raise awareness of the link between high blood pressure and strokes.

High blood pressure is a contributing factor to 54% of all strokes. Last year almost three in every 10 people who had their blood pressure taken at a “Know Your Blood Pressure” event were advised to see their GP for a follow up.

It’s estimated that around 16 million people in the UK have high blood pressure and around a third are unaware of this.

Wyeville Garden Centre theft hearing adjourned

Court hearings involving two district councilllors accused of theft from Wyeville Garden Centres has been adjourned by Margate Magistrates Court due to the ill health of the defendants.

Cllr Konnor Collins, of St John's Avenue, Ramsgate - listed as Kevan Collins - is facing a charge of theft from Wyevale Garden Centres of £847.59 worth of garden equipment.

The charge dates back to April 4 2015.

Former Thanet council Ukip cabinet member, Cllr Helen Smith, also of St John's Avenue, faces the same charge of theft. She is also charged with an assault on April 4 2015 in Ramsgate against Kerrie Walker.

It is the ninth time Cllr Collins and Smith's cases have been listed to be heard at the court.

Magistrates heard that Cllr Collins was admitted to King's College Hospital in London on February 11 2016 and has undergone brain surgery. A letter from the hospital and Cllr Collins' GP were given to the court.

Speaking for the defence Hugh Roberts from Bond Joseph solicitors said: "My client continues to be an inpatient at the hospital. He has extremely limited mobility. At the moment he is blind as a result of the internal pressure on his skull. There are several other complications including diabetes.

"It's looking very unlikely that he's going to be before the court this year, if at all. We plan to make some representations that the matter does not come to court."

Cllr Collins' case has been adjourned until Thursday, May 5.

The court heard Cllr Smith is suffering from agoraphobia as part of a depressive illness and was unfit to attend court. A letter from Cllr Smith's GP was received by the court and the case has been adjourned until Thursday, April 21 where further medical evidence of her condition is awaited by the prosecution.

Highgrove Festival gets helping hand from nurseries
Wyevale Nurseries has this month loaned a range of topical herbaceous perennials, shrubs and ferns to the Highgrove Garden Festival...

One of the UK’s leading commercial nurseries in Hereford has this month loaned a range of topical herbaceous perennials, shrubs and ferns to the Highgrove Garden Festival.

Wyevale Nurseries has provided the plants, which are representative of the traditional planting at Highgrove, to be used for displays during the Festival from April 11 until 16.

Adrian Hoare, Garden Design and Domestic Landscape Sales Manager at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “We are delighted we could help Highgrove with its plant displays for its Garden Festival next week. It looks to be a brilliant event with a range of fantastic well-known guest speakers and a plant fair. An event not to be missed.

“We have loaned the plants for display purposes but they can also be purchased by visitors during the event.

“The plants we have provided include Polmonium Heaven Scent, common name ‘Jacobs Ladder’. A pretty, airy plant with greeny-purple, fern like leaves, which form a neat mound.  The blue flowers are lightly fragrant in late spring onwards. They look great in the front of borders or mixed within other garden plants. Polmonium Heaven Scent is a perfect cottage or traditional garden plant.”

Wyevale Nurseries has also supplied Dicentra spectabilis (common name ‘Bleeding Heart’) and Syringa Red Pixie (Dwarf Liliac).

Dicentra spectabilis has heart shaped rose and white flowers hanging from long arching stems throughout the spring and summer. It is suitable for any area with partial shade, such as beds, borders and containers.

Syringa Red Pixie is a delicate, compact lilac ideal for any setting from large estates to smaller gardens, even growing in containers. The plants will be smothered in deep redish-purple flower buds opening to fragrant pink blooms in late spring.

Wyevale Nurseries is one of the largest family-run wholesale nurseries in the UK. It was established in 1930 by Harry Williamson, a horticulturist and entrepreneur. It became the company it is today under the leadership of his son, Peter, who sadly passed away in 2011.

The Williamsons’ saw the opportunity to sell their product to an undeveloped retail market, creating one of the first garden centres, followed by a chain. In 1987, the retail side needed to expand and the 19 garden centres were sold as a PLC.

The family then turned its focus to Wyevale Nurseries Ltd. It continues to be a family-run business with ownership and joint chairmanship currently being held by the third generation, Heather and Simeon Williamson, with plans for the fourth generation to takeover in the future.

Wyevale Nurseries has a significant product range and is regularly introducing new plants. It offers a large variety of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants to garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners.

Garden centres without cafés are being given the chance to participate in this year’s Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning thanks to tea and coffee equipment and product supplier Café Works.

Any retailers looking to host an event for the charity on September 30 can borrow equipment from the Shropshire-based provider of single serve coffee options, tea and coffee equipment and vending solutions.

Café Works’ boss, Jacques Farmer, explained: “We’re more than happy for garden centres to have one of our fully automatic Bean to Cup machines and to sell the coffee to raise funds for this wonderful charity.

“We’re keen to hear from anyone interested as soon as possible, as of course the loan of our equipment is subject to availability and we anticipate this idea will prove to be very popular, as it is such an excellent cause to support.”

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, which takes place this year on Friday, September 30, is Macmillan’s largest fundraising event for people facing cancer.

The charity asks people from across the UK to host their own coffee mornings and donations on the day are made to Macmillan.

Jacques, who is licensed to work in tea and coffee services by the Academy of Food and Wine Service, added: “Last year alone the organisation raised £25 million and this year they are aiming to raise even more, and we’re delighted to be able to help in whatever way we can.

“We’ve worked a lot in the sector and we understand garden centres do like to get involved in fundraisers like this. We thought if we could provide equipment to be able to assist any garden centre that doesn’t have its own Café, then we’d be doing our bit too.”

Anyone interested in Café Works’ pop-up coffee morning in aid of this year’s Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, should contact the company soon on 01952 291026.

Jacques continued: “Café Works is ‘more than just tea and coffee’ – hence why we like to support events like this. We do everything from offering sound advice to selling great equipment and products, and have innovative ideas to help our clients solve the various problems they might have, along with providing other bits and pieces for home, restaurants and coffee shops.

“We are also working with an established designer to tailor our equipment and products to suit, for example, farm shops needing coffee to go and restaurants needing something more sophisticated. We also help small businesses needing equipment to help save staff time in-house when making that all important, inspirational and thirst-quenching cuppa for the team!”

For further details, please call Café Works, which is based in Priorslee, Telford, on 01952 291026 or visit www.cafe-works.co.uk

Francesco Mazzei & Robert Ortiz join Natural Food Kitchen chef line-up

Francesco Mazzei, chef patron at Sartoria in London’s Mayfair, and Robert Ortiz, the Michelin-starred head chef at Lima restaurant in London, will be bringing the vibrant colours and natural flavours of Italy and Peru to this year’s Natural Food Kitchen demonstrations at Natural & Organic Products Europe.

Opening at London ExCeL on 17-18 April, the Natural Food Kitchen offers two days of live demos from award-winning chefs and expert nutritionists.  The 2016 line-up also features two MasterChef finalists – Angela Langford and Andrew Kojima, ‘Medicinal Chef’ Dale Pinnock (revealing three nutritional secrets to better health and a longer life), and nutritionists Christine Bailey and Nicky Clinch.  The returning kitchen host is Jay Morjaria, founder and executive chef at Sutra Kitchen Vegetarian & Vegan Cooking School in London.

Italian chef Mazzei, a regular on the BBC’s Saturday Kitchen and MasterChef programmes, is a long-time champion of Calabrian specialities; including bergamot and the popular spicy sausage n’duja.  He’ll be using his appearance at the show to promote artisan ingredients from across southern Italy – using authentic recipes from his new book Mezzogiorno.

Traditional ingredients are also on the menu in Robert Ortiz’ session – ‘Heavenly gifts from the Andes’.  A pioneer of Peruvian cuisine, and the first Peruvian chef to win a coveted Michelin star (in 2013), he’ll be showcasing the culinary versatility of distinctive Peruvian ingredients and rare, ancient edibles from across the country’s mountain regions, coast and rainforest; including Andean grains, such as Quinoa and Kiwicha, Oca roots, and Cherimoya (“or custard apple” as Ortiz calls it).

“My approach to cooking is very simple.  I use lots of organic products, mainly from the Andes and the amazons of Peru.  Overall my style, or the philosophy behind what I do, is to try to combine the diversity that Peru has to offer – using corn, potatoes, chillies, cereals and seeds – to create a fantastic scene full of colours and textures,” says Ortiz.

His three dishes at the show will include Potato Causa starter, with Andean cereal and purple Rocoto pepper; Salmon Tiradito, with Achiote, chia seeds and yellow chilli; and, for dessert, Avocado & Cherimoya Mousse, made with raw cacao.

Chef Laura Scott, founder of the ‘How to cook good food’ blog, will also be making her show debut.  She’ll be demonstrating quick and easy organic breakfasts to launch the 2016 #WakeuptoOrganic campaign – a joint initiative from the Organic Trade Board and Soil Association to drive sales of organic through independent retailers.
