Funeral of garden centre pioneer Chris Self

The funeral of garden centre pioneer Chris Self, chairman of Whitehall Garden Centres, who died last month after a short illness, took place on Thursday at St Cyriac’s Church in Lacock, Wiltshire.

Following a heart attack in April, Mr Self underwent a successful triple heart by-pass operation at Bristol Royal Infirmary but passed away peacefully on 22 May. He was 76.

The Lacock centre, which he took over in 1974 when it was still trading as a nursery, was one of the first in the country to get planning permission as a garden centre.

The business, which trades from two sites (the other is Whitchuch) with a combined turnover of £10m, is now run by his son Peter and daughter-in-law Claire.
