Langlands Nurseries acquire new 14-acre dedicated growing site in Yorkshire

As part of their continuing and successful expansion, Langlands Nurseries have acquired a new 14-acre dedicated growing site at Holme Upon Spalding Moor (HOSM) in Yorkshire...

As part of their continuing and successful expansion, Langlands Nurseries have acquired a new 14-acre dedicated growing site at Holme Upon Spalding Moor (HOSM) in Yorkshire.

Langlands currently raise over a third of the plants they sell in specialised covered areas at their Shiptonthorpe site. By moving their growing operations to the extensive glasshouses, which currently occupy 5 acres at HOSM, which are currently used exclusively for raising lettuce, it is hoped that this figure can be increased to around 90% of all the plants they sell. In addition, this will free up space at Shiptonthorpe to allow for further improvement and development of the garden centre and catering facilities.

“This is a great opportunity for us to get back to our roots," says James Ducker, director at Langlands Nurseries. “With the glasshouses at HOSM, Langlands will be able to grow a much wider variety and volume of plants in-house. This is good news for our customers and for the environment, and a pretty exciting prospect for us as a company, as you can imagine.”

Ian Ducker, James’ cousin and also a director at Langlands, states: “We’ve recently hired a highly skilled nursery manager to help us to plan and implement our expansion at HOSM and over the next few months, as things get off the ground and we settle in to the site, we will be looking to employ a team of nursery staff to assist with the day-to-day duties and help us make this a success.

"The space we are freeing up at our Shiptonthorpe garden centre will make room for us to expand our current retail operations there, and allow us to hold more social functions and events for the community, like the upcoming Summer Ball in support of the Greenfingers children’s charity.”

The prospect of employment opportunities within the horticultural industry will come as welcome news to locals, to whom Langlands Nurseries is something of an institution, having been operating in the local area for over 50 years. Originally founded by Walter Ducker, the Langlands brand has since gone from strength to strength.

After the Second World War, Walter Ducker got a job with a Mill owner in Bingley. It was then that he gained a reputation for his Dahlias, which he grew in a small nursery at the Mill owner’s house, which just happened to be called “Langlands”. When the Mill owner retired, Walter took over the nursery business, and in 1964 he moved it to a quiet little road between Market Weighton and York. Langlands quickly built up its reputation throughout the North of England by participating in shows with their award winning Chrysanthemums, Fuchsias, and or course, Walter’s prize Dahlias, which were grown specially.

Above: James and Ian Ducker have been passionate about growing plants from a young age.

Walter’s sons, Robert and John Ducker, helped out constantly, driving around in their distinctive blue vans, delivering fresh cut flowers to markets and constructing show stands. That all changed, however, when in June 1990 a late frost killed a significant amount of Langlands’ stock. It was then that the Duckers decided to make a committed move into retail, and expanded their site at Shiptonthorpe. Robert and John are still directors of the business, along with their sons Ian and James.

Langlands currently has three garden centres across Yorkshire, including Leeds, Sheffield, and now the new plot in HOSM , employing nearly 200 people in various retail, catering and horticultural positions.

When is the best time for the Easter Bank Holiday?

We’ve just been through another early Easter where the weather, in the form of Storm Katie, had a big say in the sales of garden centre products and footfall. The data for GTN Bestsellers shows sales up 1.4 % on the same week last year even including no trading on Easter Monday, but everyone was expecting more.

So the announcement by the Archbishop of Canterbury that the dates of Easter could be fixed within 10 years could be good news. The most common date for the Western churches’ Easter is 19 April. The earliest Easter can be is 22 March, and the latest it can fall is 25 April.  But when would it be best for garden centres?

At GTN Bestsellers we analyse sales performance over the two weeks that the Bank Holiday covers, so next week we will look back on Easter over the past six years to see which gave the best uplift in sales.

What is your view on the dates of Easter?  Would fixing it be the best idea? Or is it just down to the weather so it doesn’t matter when it falls? Email your views to

Glee 2016 well on the way to being a sell-out!

The organisers of Glee, i2i Events, have announced that 84% of exhibitor stands at September's three-day show have already been sold with maximum capacity forecasted to be reached as early as June...

The organisers of Glee, i2i Events, have announced that 84% of exhibitor stands at September's three-day show have already been sold with maximum capacity forecasted to be reached as early as June.

Core show areas which are witnessing strong growth include Outdoor Entertaining, Garden Care, Home, Gift & Clothing, and Landscaping and Garden Decoration.

Continuing with its successful theme of change, i2i Events  have confirmed that the 2016 show will benefit from a number of revisions, designed to maintain a fresh feel, whilst also better reflecting the changing trends within garden retailing.

Glee’s event director Matthew Mein explains: “Moving Glee into the NEC halls 17-20 in 2014 was the best possible decision for the exhibition. It not only enabled exhibitors to think differently about their spaces, but buyers were also encouraged to shop the show differently, resulting in many more new relationships being forged as buyers came across new and exciting brands alongside existing suppliers.

"As a result, we are keen to ensure that the floorplan remains fresh, to encourage this ongoing ‘tour of discovery’. This is easily achieved by re-editing the floorplan – this can come from moving Glee’s feature content into new locations, such as the New Product display which will make its home in hall 17, or by looking at how the layout of the show best reflects changing consumer trends and market changes.”

Rebranding of core sectors

Glee’s core sectors are also set to benefit from a makeover in 2016.  In a move to ensure that the exhibition’s product sectors are more reflective of the modern garden retail environment, three of the show’s core sectors will be rebranded.

First up will be Garden Leisure, which will become known as Outdoor Entertaining.  A new approach to this sector will focus largely on the move from ‘outdoor living’ to our garden spaces being an extension of our homes, with gardens taking centre stage when it comes to entertaining space.  The revised sector will focus largely on how retailers can reinvigorate their offering to attract younger consumers into store to purchase core products such as outdoor furniture, barbecues, firepits, pizza ovens and exterior audio visual equipment.

Glee Garden Design & Landscaping will enter a new chapter in 2016 under the banner of Landscaping and Garden Decoration. This revitalised area will look at how retailers can better profit from a mixture of hard landscaping, and those decorative elements that help to complete most garden design projects.

Finally, Retail Experiences will replace Retail Services.  Offering the best in shop-fittings, POS, EPoS and retail design, this area will be expanded in 2016 to better incorporate the wider aspects related to inspirational and functional retailing concepts. Glee’s established catering section will also find a new home within the Retail Experiences section this year. Recognising catering’s vital role within creating a true and varied retail experience, it was felt that this product and service sector would be best served by being supported by the wider Retail Experiences area.

Home DIY and Water Gardening will also benefit from greater coverage at Glee 2016, in response to the increased presence of these product groups within garden centres.

Gardman’s commitment to stock gets the green light
Following major investment in Gardman’s stock, the company have guaranteed availability across their best performing lines and continue to report that their service levels are running at an all-time high...

Following major investment in Gardman’s stock, the company have guaranteed availability across their best performing lines and continue to report that their service levels are running at an all-time high.

Gardman announced its Stock Availability Guarantee at Glee last autumn.  Enabling customers to order with confidence, this new assurance eliminates product shortages at peak times throughout the year; their stock availability for the season is running at an impressive 99.4% and pre-season orders are also running significantly ahead compared to early March 2015.

Pete Utting, Gardman’s new CEO, has endorsed that maintaining and improving customer service will continue to be a priority for the company. Over the next few months he is also planning to implement a new forecasting system, which will enable Gardman to respond even better to changing seasonal demands.

Pete commented: “This will not only help us to manage stock levels but, will also be of enormous benefit to our customers by anticipating their demand and ensuring we continue to support them with a high level of availability.” Then adding, “It’s the latest example of our continued commitment to ensure our customer service levels are the best in the industry.”

James Brindle, Gardman’s Business Development Director, said feedback from our sales force indicated the company’s best sell-in for many years.

He added: “They’re telling us that customers are responding extremely well to our new stocking strategy and evidence of this is clear with the  unprecedented level of orders they’re placing with us across so many of our categories.”

Staff at Grass Hoppers Adventure Playground at Tong Garden Centre are jumping for joy after learning of their nomination in the Child Friendly Leeds (CFL) Awards.

The adventure playground, which opened last year as part of a series of improvements at Tong, was nominated in the ‘Best Place for Children and Young People in Leeds' category of the awards that took place earlier in the year.

Organised by the CFL Team, the awards evening was attended by VIPs including Nadiya Hussain from the Great British Bake Off, Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, Jamie Jones-Buchanan from the Leeds Rhinos, Claire Young from The Apprentice and the Lord Mayor.

Tong's Marketing Manager, Jo Dales is delighted with the news: "The team at Tong works really hard to deliver a family friendly play experience for all of our visitors so it's really rewarding that their efforts have been acknowledged with this nomination."

Due to the success of the playground since launch, there are plans to make Grass Hoppers Adventure Playground even bigger in 2016.

Child Friendly Leeds is a Leeds City Council initiative that is designed to bring people together to put children and young people at the heart of the community and to make Leeds a child friendly city.

Tong Garden Centre occupies a 17 acre site in Tong village. It is one of Yorkshire's biggest garden centres with 110,000 square feet of retail space and parking for up to 1,000 cars.

The team at Thompson & Morgan had a bit of fun on April Fool's Day on Friday when they announced the launch of the gin and tonic tree.

Following the success of the dual-cropping Tomtato (tomatoes and potatoes from one plant) and Egg & Chips (aubergines and potatoes on one plant), Thompson & Morgan announced it was launching its latest innovation in grafting technology: The Gin & Tonic Tree.

The statement added: "The Gin & Tonic Tree is set to be the first in a series of grow-your-own beverages. Expect to see the Vermouth Vine and Sherry Cherry following in future years.

"A limited stock of the Gin & Tonic Tree has been made available for the spring despatch season. A further 100,000 plants will be made available this summer for autumn delivery."

Thompson and Morgan recommended growing The Gin & Tonic Tree alongside a lemon tree to complete the ingredient list.

Garden Décor range of metal birds is a soaraway success
Supa Ltd are celebrating winning the first-ever Best Giftware Product category in the PATS Sandown 2016 New Product Awards with their Garden Décor range of metal birds...

Supa Ltd are celebrating winning the first-ever Best Giftware Product category in the PATS Sandown 2016 New Product Awards with their Garden Décor range of metal birds.

There are 23 birds in the range and they will all provide an attractive addition to any garden setting. They also make a perfect gift as the judges of the PATS Sandown awards discovered.

The judges, made up of a selection of independent pet retailers, were unanimous in their decision, and said of the Garden Décor range: “They are colourful, life-like, and extremely sturdy. They will look cool in any shape and size of garden.”

The PATS Sandown New Giftware Product Award was given to the striking Peacock and Cockerel although the range caters for all tastes. A Kingfisher, Barn Owl, Kestrel, Goldfinch, Robin, Woodpecker, Pheasant and Heron, are also available, and RRPs range between £14.99 and £44.99.

“Winning the New Product Award at PATS Sandown is fantastic,” said Chris Goodlad, Managing Director of Supa Ltd (pictured above). “We won the PATS Best Bird Product category with our Gloucester Bird Feeder a couple of years ago and that award gave the product a huge boost. We’re hoping this latest achievement will do the same for the Garden Décor range of metal birds.

“We also value the award because it has been given by independent pet retailers. They know which products are going to sell well in their shops, and it’s great to hear their kind comments.

“I felt that this year’s New Product Awards went to some outstanding products, so it’s a great honour to be amongst the winners.”

As a company, Supa Ltd has discovered that the trend of garden decoration has moved towards the lifestyle end of the market, and this range of metal birds fits perfectly into a growing sector.

Japanese Maple is HTA April Plant of the Moment
The Japanese maple is. the Horticultural Trades Association’s ‘Plant of the Moment’ for April – a perfect choice of tree for any compact or courtyard garden.

The Japanese maple is. the Horticultural Trades Association’s ‘Plant of the Moment’ for April – a perfect choice of tree for any compact or courtyard garden.

Points for the information desk:

  • Japanese maples will put on a show throughout the year, starting as soon as foliage unfurls in spring and continuing until their autumn transformation into shades of gold and bronze before they eventually fall.
  • Many acers are commonly called Japanese maples, but their parents could be derived from several different species including Acer japonicum, Acer palmatum, Acer shirasawanum or others.
  • The natural shape and growing habit of their branches make Japanese maples an ideal choice for gardens or growing in large patio pots. Leaf shapes, sizes and colours vary immensely; many have a broad palm shape, but these are often divided and dissected into the most delicate and intricate forms.  Add to this their wide range of colours, from deep greens to yellow, gold, purple or even variegated patterns and you have huge variety to choose from.

Top varieties

Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’

A.palmatum ‘Osakazuki’

A.palmatum ‘Sango-Kaku’

Golden Shirasawanum maple  (Acer shirasawanum ‘Aureum’, pictured)

Top tips for your information hand-out

· Choose a sheltered site where trees are protected from late spring frosts, cold winds and scorching summer sun.

· Maples prefer well-drained soil containing plenty of compost to lock in moisture and ensure the ground never dries out.

·For growing in containers choose large and stable terracotta pots with several drainage holes in their base. Line pots with a sheet of plastic before filling with compost to reduce water loss through the sides.

Planting combinations

Japanese maples need space to flourish. Partners to consider include

Azalea, ferns, flowering cherries and plums (prunus varieties), hydrangeas and wisteria.

Visit www.the-hta.org.uk/plantofthemoment for more information and to download the media pack which features: plant information for each month including top plants, tips and companion plant ideas, high and low resolution photos, plus Point-of-Sale samples from Floramedia and Hortipak.

£1.3m project to transform care home gardens
National charity Thrive is part of a pioneering project which will make gardens and outdoor space at dementia care settings across the UK more accessible, stimulating and to promote meaningful activity...
National charity Thrive is part of a pioneering project which will make gardens and outdoor space at dementia care settings across the UK more accessible, stimulating and to promote meaningful activity.

By creatively developing the environment outside the dementia care settings, residents will be encouraged to use the spaces more often to improve their health and wellbeing.

Staff too will be given guidance on how to make best use of their new outdoor space and there will be resources for anyone in the dementia care sector on the value gardening can bring to people living with dementia.

Learning through Landscapes will run the project and has received a £1.3 million grant from the Big Lottery Fund.

Thrive will deliver training to dementia care staff and consult on garden design for people with dementia; Groundwork will manage and deliver the landscaping works; Age UK will provide expertise on project design and implementation for people living with dementia as well as identify 30 care home settings; and the University of Kent will deliver the evaluation and support the consultations.

The team at Thrive will apply its expertise gained from years of working with people who have dementia to create a film aimed at anyone in a dementia care setting showing the value gardening for people living with dementias.

Thrive will also create a podcast on the same subject but aimed at the general public. And the charity will create the first ever web based learning resource for garden designers on how to create a garden suitable for people with dementia.

Thrive has a long history of providing consultancy to a number of care homes and dementia care settings on the best way to use gardening to promote health and wellbeing for many years. The charity also consults on how best to design a suitable garden and is entering its seventh year of working with Hallmark Care Homes.

Many of the 800,000 people in the UK living with dementia have had significant experience of the outdoors either through work or in their own leisure time, which is often lost as a result of the restrictions that dementia brings.

Although the health and wellbeing benefits of stimulating natural environments are becoming increasingly well known**, it is often the case that the outside spaces of many dementia care settings are rarely used and tend to be tidy, easy-to-maintain, highly-manicured spaces without areas to grow plants or wild corners that attract wildlife.

Staff will also be trained to promote frequent access to more appealing outdoor areas where people can rediscover gardening skills or simply relax and take in the multi-sensory experiences of nature.

Damien Newman, Training, Education and Consultancy Manager at Thrive, said: “Over time, those experiencing dementia may not be able to maintain their ability to manage everyday tasks, as their mood and understanding are affected.

“These changes mean help may be needed to find new ways to do these jobs, such as breaking each task down into stages or concentrating on the experience of activity more than trying to get activities finished.

“Many familiar gardening jobs can easily be broken down into smaller steps and through this approach people can be encouraged to continue to achieve. And then as dementia progresses encouraging people to explore the sensory qualities of plants and nature can improve mood and affect.

“From our own pilot study research into the effects of gardening on those with young onset dementia *** we found that structured gardening activities appeared to alleviate the expected deterioration of wellbeing and possibly even cognitive functioning. Gardening act also provide opportunities for exercise to maintain physical functioning and provide time to socialise in an environment where we feel we belong

“A well designed garden can be a safe and enjoyable place that can help give a sense of time and continuity through being in touch with the seasons.

“Well considered routes around the garden can be easier to negotiate and reduce the anxiety of making decision. Seating can be a place for conversation or quiet reflection and beds or containers at comfortable heights will make gardening more enjoyable. Special consideration for other potential age related conditions will also enhance accessibility.

“We are looking forward to seeing some new gardens being designed and empowering staff to use them with residents and understanding the benefits this will bring.”

Kathryn Rossiter CEO at Thrive, said: “This is an exciting project which will make a positive difference to hundreds of people living with dementia.

“Our own research revealed that for people with dementia, gardening and being outdoors can lead to improved mood sociability and improved self-identify as valued and confident individuals.

“Carers also commented that dementia patients gardening together in a small group had resulted in feelings of independence, enjoyment, value and achievement.

“This project has the ability to touch the lives of hundreds of people living with dementia.”

Juno Hollyhock, Executive Director, Learning through Landscapes, said: “This project brings together elements such as garden design, staff training and support, client based consultation and local knowledge to create innovative and exciting garden spaces.

“We believe that bringing together the very best in current thinking around designing for people living with dementia will give many more settings the chance to try out low cost solutions in their outdoor spaces in the future.”

Thrive offers bespoke training and consultancy services to anyone wanting to maximise the use of outdoor space in their care settings.

Please contact our training team on 0118 988 5688 if you’d like to see how Thrive could help your organisation or team.

Frozzys – the lickable frozen yoghurt for dogs – is set to be distributed nationwide by Eden Farm Hulleys, the largest ice cream distributor in the UK.

Eden Farm Hulleys will be doing daily nationwide deliveries with a minimum order requirement of £65.

The company has 37 reps out on the road and provides a national distribution service from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

Noel Conlon, of Frozzys, said: “It’s a fabulous arrangement with Eden Farm Hulleys because it means everybody can get Frozzys now. We have just completed an extension to our factory in the Ribble Valley so we are capable of meeting the expected extra demand.

“The real winners will be our furry friends. It’s much better for dogs to have a lactose free, pro-biotic ice treat. Vets love it in their surgeries  for dogs after operations, it’s loved by people who have done long walks and end up at a garden centre, and for dogs that have teething problems.

“Selling through our branded freezers reaps a 6-to-1 sales benefit compared to stocking in other company freezers. I’ve been amazed at how sales hold up in the winter months.”

Experts say bird-loving households have boosted numbers of some species
Numbers of some garden birds species have soared in the UK and Ireland – bucking the overall trend - as these birds respond to kind-hearted householders leaving out food...
Numbers of some garden birds species have soared in the UK and Ireland – bucking the overall trend - as these birds respond to kind-hearted householders leaving out food.

Despite bird numbers being down overall, numbers of Goldfinch, Wrens, Blackbirds and Blackcaps have all had population increases reported in the past year. It is thought this is down to an increase in the amount of shop-bought bird food that is left outside for birds, containing the nutrients they need to survive.

Experts even say that some species, such as Blackcaps have developed new migration routes to take advantage of these offerings, which supplement their natural diet.

Matt Brash, Celebrity Wildlife and Zoo Vet, said: “These reports are very encouraging indeed. They suggest that the efforts of millions of households across the UK and Ireland to boost garden bird population levels is working!

“By leaving out nutrient rich shop bought bird food you can supplement the natural diet of garden birds, ensuring they have enough energy, vitamins and minerals to survive, reproduce and live healthy lives.”

However, not all shop bought food is equal, Peckish Complete Energy Balls contain 12 different ingredients to appeal to as many types of birds as possible. Each energy ball also contains Calvita, a combination of vitamins and minerals which are essential to bird health, including breeding, healthy egg production and strong beaks and claws.

New bat box designed with the Vincent Wildlife Trust
Wildlife World has partnered with the Vincent Wildlife Trust to produce a new roosting site for the UK’s declining bat population...
Wildlife World has partnered with the Vincent Wildlife Trust to produce a new roosting site for the UK’s declining bat population.

The Vincent Pro Bat Box was created to increase the number of available habitats for a wide range of bat species.

Designed by Colin J Morris, one of the UK’s leading bat researchers, the new bat box has undergone extensive testing and comparative trials to prove excellent performance and occupancy rates with at least seven local bat species, including the Barbastelle and Common Pipistrelle.

The Vincent Pro Bat Box is set aside from other similar products as it is specially designed with a cluster zone and three vertical entrance chambers in various sizes to attract a range of bat species. The box is also designed to offer a rough landing surface and ladder making it particularly easy for all bat species to access and use, and requires minimal cleaning as droppings are forced to drop to the ground through the three entrance gaps.

The sturdy wooden structure is created using FSC timber and is treated using only water-based paints and sealants to make it an environmentally friendly choice for a new bat box.

As bats do not build their own roosting sites, it is important that all manufactured bat boxes are created to offer a durable and practical site for bats to use all year round. For this reason, Wildlife World have painted the chamber roof and elevation panel black to block light and absorb heat to offer a warm breeding site for female bats during the summer. The box can also be moved and placed in a cooler area to provide a suitable roosting site for hibernating bats in the winter months.

Wildlife World worked closely with the Vincent Wildlife Trust to ensure that the new box offers the best and most functional bat roosting site to prevent the UK bat population from declining any further. This sudden decrease is due to many factors as a result of the rise in development works causing lack of roosting sites, feeding habitats, flight lines and an increase in artificial light which reduces a bat’s hunting time. By offering an artificial roosting site in the right conditions, it is possible that the number of habitats will improve, along with the population numbers.

The Vincent Wildlife Trust has been pioneering mammal conservation for 40 years, and manages 40 priority bat roosts, many of which have international significance. The wildlife trust undertakes surveys to help identify the current status of mammal species that are considered under threat or concern. The organisation also delivers conservation and monitoring of many wildlife species, predominantly bats and members of the weasel family, as well as providing education on the benefits of conservation.

Further information on the Vincent Pro Bat Box is available from Wildlife World on 01666 505333, by emailing james@wildlifeworld.co.uk or by visiting the company’s website at www.wildlifeworld.co.uk
