April down 7% but year to date sales up 6% on 2021 with Jubilee Bank Holiday to come
Exclusive GTN Bestsellers garden centre Epos data analysis

After a great Easter and a steady May Bank Holiday, garden centre sales are poised, at 6% up year on year to the end of April, ready for warmer weather and the celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with the four-day long Bank Holiday at the start of June.

To be 6% up on last year for sales volumes after the first four months of the year is a great position to be in. And from the GTN Bestsellers data analysis the biggest sales increases are in areas linked to core gardening and growing. That can only be good for the rest of the year, time invested now will reap rewards later and gives us a great indication that even now the restrictions brought about by Covid have been removed people still want to spend time in their garden and spend money in garden centres.

April total volume sales in the GTN Bestsellers Epos data were 7% down on 2021 which was an exceptional month last year when we came out of Lockdown#3 and container shipping problems lead to a certain amount of panic buying. Compared with 2019, volume sales for the month were 19% up.

We’re starting to see Jubilee displays and promotions in garden centres we visit. Please send us photos of your ideas to promote sales in the run up to the June festivities, we’d love to feature them in GTN and GTN Xtra.  Email trevor@pottingshedpress.co.uk

Jubilee plant sales were flying through the tills last weekend at Aylett Nurseries as GTN Xtra visited the centre to see how they have developed their peat vs peat free communications to customers.

Their display of red, white and blue container plants were selling fast in the covered planteria ahead of more Jubilee plant sales displays being created during this week.  As the Jubilee weekend is a great opportunity to build on sales of plants and garden leisure items we'd love to see photos of your displays and we'll include them in a special Platinum Jubilee display GTN Xtra photo gallery. Please send you photos, or social media links to: trevor@pottingshedpress.co.uk.

This year Ayletts have ramped their peatometer up a notch to feature on every growing media product sold, not just in the growing media sales area but also everywhere growing media is merchandised around the St Albans centre.  See our photo tour below.

If you're proud of your peat vs peat free signage and customer communications too, please let us know: trevor@pottingshedpress.co.uk.

Southern Trident’s Harmony Gardens brand of growing media products was launched at Glee last year to glowing acclaim – Harmony Gardens Multipurpose Compost won the Best New Growing Media Product and the Glee Sustainability Award. Since then, it has been much loved by stockists and consumers alike.

The range, which currently includes Multipurpose Compost, Growbag, Top Soil and Soil Improver, is 100% peat free, only contains environmentally-responsible sourced recycled raw materials and by-products from other industries.

The coir used has Soil Association accreditation, and Harmony Gardens is the world’s first carbon neutral growing media brand. That’s definitely something to shout about to your customers when you stock the Harmony Gardens range.

We are extremely excited to announce that at this year’s Glee we will be doubling the range of products, to provide a complete growing media portfolio. We can’t wait to show you our Fruit & Vegetable Compost, Farmyard Manure, Chipped Bark and Ericaceous Compost – always every compost producer’s trickiest type of peat-free compost to formulate – but we’ve done it! All carbon neutral and ideal to bolster any eco-friendly portfolio.

The attractive packaging creates stand-out displays for stockists and contains clear messaging and customer friendly information; Peat Free, Carbon Neutral, Soil Association and Responsible Sourcing Scheme for Growing Media (RSSGM), of which Southern Trident is a founding member. Unlike most other suppliers, we clearly explain exactly which peat-free constituents it contains and their benefits, where and how to use the product and, in the case of composts, how many containers it will fill.

As part of our sustainable Green Today, Greener Tomorrow philosophy, bags are made from at least 30% recycled plastic and are 100% recyclable where local authority facilities exist to accommodate recyclable plastics.

The newly launched, Harmony Gardens website – harmonygardens.uk – contains details of the range, has a stockist locator so consumers can find their local garden centre supplier and fully explains our carbon neutral and peat-free status.

To find out more, visit the website, harmonygardens.uk, contact us at sales@southerntrident.com, call us on 020 3633 7786 and come and see us at Glee stand 6H52-J53.

Evergreen Garden Care gives update on slug pellets

Recently the story of slug pellets being banned in the UK has been doing the rounds. While there certainly is a story around slug pellets, it’s not quite so simple. In fact, there is only one specific ingredient that used to be quite common in slug pellets, known as metaldehyde, an active ingredient Evergreen Garden Care stopped using in 2015 which has been made illegal.

It’s estimated that the average British garden can contain as many as 20,000 slugs, which is around 200 per m2. Sadly, slugs like to feed on some of our favourite plants – particularly vegetables that we spend a long time growing, including lettuces, cabbages and young brassicas, like broccoli and cauliflower. In fact, according to the slug’s tastebuds, the younger the plant the better as it’s sweeter and tastier.

Finding the best way of combating slugs and snails without the use of harsh chemicals has always been a challenge to the home gardener. With many homemade solutions being tried, such as crushed eggshells, beer traps, wool pellets, and coffee grounds all with varying degrees of success.

Green Light Trust and Notcutts announce corporate partnership

East Anglian based charity, Green Light Trust (GLT), and Notcutts, the family-owned garden and horticulture business, are delighted to announce an on-going corporate partnership...

East Anglian based charity, Green Light Trust (GLT), and Notcutts, the family-owned garden and horticulture business, are delighted to announce an on-going corporate partnership.

The Pandemic has thrown into stark contrast the wellbeing and mental health benefits of green space and being outdoors. Being outside and working with nature to preserve it for future generations is part of the DNA of both organisations. The new partnership will focus on highlighting the benefits of access to green space and how it improves wellbeing for all.

The first initiative of the new partnership will be the funding of a major new piece of research.  Under the auspices of the University of Essex, the two-year project will examine why woodland settings have an impact on wellbeing and discover the contributory factors that make the most difference. Is it just being in a woodland environment or is it the activities which take place in woodland settings which have the most efficacy?

This research will study GLT programmes and examine which activities have the most impact on the wellbeing of participants, from woodland conservation to green working through to nature walks and sitting around the campfire relaxing in a group.

Previous research undertaken by the University of Essex in 2020 demonstrated that participants derive huge benefits from being part of a GLT programme.   Intervention through the Trust’s programmes (as measured on Rosenberg’s self-esteem scale) showed an improvement of over 1.4 on the 10-point scale. This is a huge improvement when one considers that significant life events, such as a marriage, the birth of a child, divorce or unemployment, have an impact of +/- 0.6.

It has long been known that nature-based interventions can have a major impact on improving health, longevity, and perceived wellbeing.  GLT was further able to show demonstrable and measurable benefits in attendees’ wellbeing and life choices through qualitative data in terms of participants moving on from attending GLT courses to returning into full time education or employment.  It is testament of the impact of GLT’s success to date that 18% of the current cohort of employees and volunteers are past participants.

Caroline Notcutt, Vice Chairman, Notcutts, said: “We know that huge benefits are derived from being outside in a green space.  The NHS has prescribed gardening since 2019 to improve wellbeing and fitness levels, and research suggests that being able to see green space can even reduce recuperation time in hospital.   At Notcutts, as part of our corporate partnership with GLT, we are delighted to fund this important piece of research which we hope will take our understanding and the efficacy of green care so much further.

“In this, our 125th anniversary year, such research will serve as a lasting legacy by improving our understanding of the benefits of meaningful activity conducted in a green space.   This is something which our original founders, who were as passionate about the benefits that can be derived from the natural environment as the current team at Notcutts, would really embrace.”

Tom Brown, CEO, GLT, said: “We are delighted that Notcutts has come onboard as a corporate partner” said “This first joint piece of work will help with our understanding on why some activities that we deliver in woodland settings work better than others.   We hope that the results will provide the basis for a plan which can be rolled out UK wide to improve the nation’s mental health and physical wellbeing. Non communicable diseases already account for 50% of UK deaths.  If this research can provide a blueprint for preventative interventions, the benefits to individuals, society and the public purse would be immense.”

The most successful relationships - as in nature - are based on mutual understanding and sharing of goals and values.  In addition to the research, the new partnership arrangement will encourage the Notcutts team to volunteer at GLT sites and help with conservation projects such as tree planting and woodland management as well as engaging in various fund-raising activities. GLT will benefit from Notcutts colleagues with their years of horticultural advice on planting the GLT vegetable garden as well as Notcutts providing taster days for GLT participants as they move on in their recovery journeys into potentially considering a career in horticulture.

Award-winning pet accessory firm set to exhibit at Glee

Award-winning Milton Keynes-based pet accessory business, Barking Bags is set to exhibit for the first time at Glee which takes place from the 28-30 June at the NEC.

Regarded at the leading UK show for the garden centre trade, Barking Bags is set to attract buyers with its exciting range of bags which are specially designed for dog walkers but can also be adapted for a number of other uses such as carrying grooming equipment, garden tools for pottering around the garden and even carrying your pack lunch and other essentials whilst out on country walks or horse-riding.

Barking Bags was awarded the Business Start-Up of the Year at the prestigious Pet Industry Federation awards in 2021 and recently appeared on the popular BBC One TV show, Dragons' Den securing an offer of investment from Dragon, Sara Davies. The appearance on Dragons' Den led to a six month sell-out of stock in one night and a massive demand since for their bags from dog owners. They are now looking to expand the business by increasing their manufacturing capability and introducing new fabrics and designs to their range.

Barking Bags is the brainchild of Debbie Greaves and her partner Rob Angell, who were inspired by the need to find a bag that would carry all the paraphernalia that they needed when they were training and out on a walk with their dog, Maisie.

Barking Bags are fast becoming an essential companion for dog walkers. Their fashionable and multifunctional unisex design allows the wearer the flexibility to use them cross body or as a bum bag, helping dog walkers to carry everything they need without compromising on style.

Debbie said: “We have a range of high quality, water resistant, unisex fabrics and also high end luxury leather bags to choose from, but in response to customer demand, we also produce a vegan friendly range as well.”

Inspired by young British designers, Barking Bags make walking the dog easier, safer and more convenient. Their ingenious designs have mesh pockets for water bottles and soggy toys, a poo bag dispenser, a safe place for keys and mobile and much more. Some models have reflective strips for added safety when walking in the dark and Barking Bags sell police approved panic alarms that can be clipped onto the bags.

Barking Bags come with breathable side pockets with the option of a draw string side pocket – large enough to carry the dog waste once it is bagged up which means no more walking around carrying the unmentionable stuff.  As well as being practical, the bags make great gift items and would be great sellers in any garden centre.

The bags are packaged in the UK at MK SNAP - a local charity working with adults with learning difficulties. Barking Bags also work in partnership with other brands with environmental and ethical credentials and hope to become involved with more charities down the line.

Debbie is rapidly becoming an entrepreneurial expert and guest speaker and is regularly asked to do talks for organisations such as the Woman’s Institute and local business groups.

Barking Bag’s stand at GLEE is number 7C33

The horticultural industry’s tribute to Peter Seabrook – ‘In haste’

The whole horticultural industry owes gratitude to Peter Seabrook MBE, for the influence he had on our industry in over 70 years of his dedicated input. That industry which Peter supported with his whole heart is coming together at Gardeners World Live 2022 this June. The horticultural industry’s ‘thank you’ to Peter will be one of the main attractions in the Floral Marquee at the show at the NEC between the 16th and 19th June.

The concept of Peter’s display, much of which was already being planned by him before he died suddenly in January of this year, was to celebrate 100 years of the BBC (centenary year 2022), 60 years of BBC TV gardening coverage and 50 years of Peter’s TV Gardening in the UK on the BBC - Pebble Mill and Gardeners World.

Peter channelled his seemingly boundless energy everyday into encouraging young people in gardening, new plants, learning and enthusing others to share his passion.

In true ‘Peter style’ the industry has come together to create the feature which is made up of four main elements, all of which relate to those passions in his life:

1.  The Dig This Vegetable Plot – in 1975 when Peter became involved with BBC Pebble Mill at One TV programme one of his creations was the 10ft x 12ft plot to grow veg.  His ‘Dig This’ section of the programme was a highlight feature from which he wrote his Vegetable Guide, published in 1976, which sold almost 1m copies.

Four years ago, visiting the horticultural unit at Pershore High School, Worcestershire, Peter saw students enthusiastically tending their 3m x 3m plots – he hatched the plan to show a school allotment as part of one of his gardening show displays. Like his ‘Dig This’ plot the student’s plots teach them the variety of veg and fruit they can grow in a limited space, the seasonality of produce and the effect of successional sowing. As well as saving food costs and miles, the benefits to people of all ages from the activity of gardening, working with nature and being in the outdoors have never been more relevant than today. Perhaps Peter was ahead of the game once more?

2. The Rose Border – One of Peter’s favourite plants was the rose, but which one? “Any one he would say and the stronger the scent the better”

The Precious series of roses from Whartons are super-healthy, repeat flowering, providing colour from May to November. Floribunda flowers on a dome shaped bush, with not many other flowering shrubs can compare with them for longevity of flower with relatively little maintenance. The border, edged with Verbena ‘Seabrook’s Lavender’ and new in 2021, Verbena ‘Margaret’s Memory’ (named after Peters wife, with Royalty proceeds going to The Alzheimer’s Society) adds an additional flowing edging of colour through the summer.

3. Peter was a founding Trustee of the David Colegrave Foundation, a charity that supports students of horticulture. As part of their ‘thank you’ to Peter for all the work he did over the 30 years for the charity, they have taken on The Pelargonium Wall he had planned to create at this year’s show. In Peter’s eyes geraniums always had an important place in the garden. Recent genetic developments by breeders across the world intrigued him and to show their versatility, variety and downright good value Peter conceived a wall of Pelargoniums to display their merits to show visitors.

4. Floral Fantasia – a ‘trial ground’ currently based at RHS Hyde Hall near Peter’s home town of Chelmsford, his concept was to create a pathway from breeder to consumer for new plants. This was a more recent vision Peter had, and something he had devoted a lot of his energy to during lock down while he also grieved the death of his wife of 60 years, Margaret who died recently. So far approaching 20 breeders and nurseries have put forward nearly 50 new varieties of plants for the display at  Gardeners World. This includes some new Dianthus from Volmary that are so new they have yet to be named! A new Forsythia from Hilliers, the Bubbles series   of Petunia from Kerley & Co. Calibrachoa Cabaret Good Night Kiss from Ball     Colegrave, a new Nemesia from Bransford Webbs, Helenium autumnale Hayday Gold will also being showing its sunny face, introduced by Syngenta. Raymond Evison Clematis from the Channel Islands will be showing Clematis Issey.

Pot after pot of new plant varieties from colourful summer bedding to shrubs will highlight the work Peter carried on through over 60 years in the trade of finding, growing and promoting new plant varieties. Floral Fantasia feature at the RHS garden is a unique industry collaboration and the display promoting it to the public at Gardeners World Live will be one of its first exposures to the consumer.

It is hoped that the new Sweet Pea Peter Seabrook will also be on show and the new climbing rose announced in April by Whartons Nurseries Peter’s Persica.

“What better way to honour over 70 years of his work in the garden industry than for that industry to come together in ‘thanks’ for his tireless work on our behalf,” said Neil Gow who with Val Christman is co-ordinating the display.

Neil added: “We all have our own memories and recollections of working with Peter and the impact he had on our lives and our industry over many years and it is an honour to be involved with this display. We thank his family, Alison and Roger, for their help and support and also the team at Gardeners World Live for making it possible.”

Peter would be right behind the efforts of the industry to put on the display at Gardeners World Live, which Peter always described as one of his favourite events of the year.

A reception is being held for invited guests as part of the Press Preview in the Floral Marquee on the 15th June, when a glass will be raised to honour Peter and for the industry to ‘thank’ probably the greatest ambassador we will ever have.

Peter would only have one regret – that he is not there himself to talk to show visitors and impart some of his gardening wisdom – a regret we all share.

As Peter himself would sign off his correspondence – ‘Kind regards’

Pet treat company set to exhibit at Glee for first time

Pet treat start-up company PARK LiFE is set to exhibit for the first time at the Glee, which takes place at the NEC Birmingham on June 28-30.

The Ireland-based business manufactures and distributes a range of wholesome, grain-free and 100% natural biscuits for dogs that are full of tasty human grade and gut-friendly ingredients. These come in three varieties – Fris-Bix, Love-Bix and Chill-Bix.

The biscuits are made from a few simple ingredients – sunflower seeds, peas, potatoes, coconut oil and apple juice with added herbs, berries and super seeds depending on the variety. They are cut into fun bite-sized shapes to keep any pooch happy and satisfied.

PARK LiFE also offers a dental chew called Milk Bone, which is inspired by Yak chews and available in chicken, salmon and lamb flavours. Again using 100% natural, human-grade ingredients which are kind to the tummy, these bone-shaped ‘super chews’ are made with high-quality milk protein and help to relieve boredom, while cleaning teeth and supporting strong muscles and bones. What’s more, they’re high protein, calcium-rich, and lactose-free.

Richard Marles started PARK LiFE after his Golden Labrador Penny suffered a bloated stomach and discomfort after eating a major brand of dog biscuits.

He said: “Our Milk Bones are the safest long-lasting dental chew around. They are slightly softer than a Yak Chew, so the dog can eat the whole thing in one sitting and the pet parents don’t have to take away the final leftover piece like with a Yak chew.

“Our biscuits are grain-free, 100% natural, Vegan (although we haven’t ruled out meat versions), human quality with no added sugar or salt and no hidden junk.

“We’re also working on an exciting NPD pipeline, so watch this space! “

PARK LiFE took a large number of orders from independents and garden centres at PATS recently and is currently in discussion with a number of potential wholesale partners.

Park Life is also set to exhibit at InterZoo, PATS Telford and many more events throughout 2022.

Rolawn, has donated £2,500 to the charity Greenfingers, as part of the annual Garden Re-Leaf event.  The money was generated through an online initiative whereby Rolawn pledged to donate 5% of the value of all sales made through their website, Rolawn.co.uk, from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th March.

Rolawn advertised the pledge on their website, newsletters and social media, to encourage people who may have been considering a future purchase of their turf and landscaping products to bring forward their order, to bolster the value of the donation.

Jonathan Hill, Sales Director for Rolawn, said: “Over the years that we have worked with Greenfingers, we have come to understand how important their work is, creating safe, stimulating outdoor spaces for children spending time in hospices. We have seen the difference that each donation makes to the lives of these children and to their families.

Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising and Communications for Greenfingers Charity, commented: “Thank you to the team at Rolawn. Your support of the Greenfingers Charity Garden ReLeaf day is so very much appreciated.”  As well as fundraising for Greenfingers, Rolawn has provided products to support the creation and renovation of hospice gardens.

Focus on fundraisers: Evergreen Garden Care

Evergreen Garden Care has gone above and beyond to support the Greenfingers Charity and help bolster its annual fundraising total, including becoming a Platinum Partner within the charity’s Silver Anniversary Appeal.

Here we find out more about what else this industry colossus has planned for the rest of the year to support the children’s hospice garden charity.

Garden Re-Leaf Day

With hundreds of dedicated staff to draw on, the Evergreen team has been able to get actively involved in several Greenfingers events including the ever-popular annual Garden Re-Leaf Walk.

Whilst Evergreen walkers were raking up on the steps on March 18th, other team members were busy undertaking alternative challenges to rack up the miles, including Richard Fisher, Evergreen Garden Care’s Customer Marketing Manager, who cycled over 120km for the charity. Throughout the Garden Re-Leaf week a special bake sale and quiz also took place, helping to top up the fundraising total.

London Landmarks Half Marathon

In April, Evergreen CEO, Karl Kahofer, Commercial Finance Analyst, Julia Aliseyko along with three others from the business were part of a team of 11 runners that tackled the 13.1mile London Landmarks Half Marathon in the name of Greenfingers. This unique road race, which takes in some of the capital’s most grand, quirky and hidden history, has so far seen Evergreen’s fundraising total reach £2,400.

Talking after the race, Karl Kahofer said: “What a day! The weather held out, the route was scenic, and we had fantastic support along the route from our lovely cheering group!  Most importantly, we were running for a good cause. I’m proud to be involved!”

Three Peaks Challenge

This September (10th – 11th) a team of 14 intrepid Evergreen adventurers will be taking on the infamous Three Peaks Challenge. With a fundraising target of £30,000, and training already underway, this challenge will test the mettle of the fundraisers, as they take on the three biggest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales. The entire Evergreen family is set to get behind the challengers a series of events throughout the year including a bake sale and a raffle, full of prizes kindly donated by customers and agencies.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show

It has also been confirmed that Evergreen Garden Care will also be supporting the Greenfingers Charity at the forthcoming RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Taking place May 24th – 28th, the Evergreen team are looking to replicate the fundraising success they had at the 2021 event, where they offered goody bags in exchange for donations. This year, the team will be offering visitors to the Greenfingers stand a bottle of plant feed in exchange for a minimum donation of £5. Adding an element of fun to the week, the team will also have a special fundraising thermometer on hand to help track the total raised and hopefully encourage more visitors to dig deep.

Special edition pack to support Greenfingers

Finally, Evergreen has launched a special edition Miracle-Gro charity pack in aid of Greenfingers. The Greenfingers Special Edition Peat Free Premium All-Purpose Compost 40L is available now in garden centres nationwide, with an of RRP £7.99.

The special edition pack aims to raise awareness of the charity and the incredible work it does for families across the country amongst garden centre customers. On top of its annual support, it has also been confirmed that Evergreen and the Miracle-Gro brand is donating £5,000 to assist with one of Greenfingers’ latest projects at ‘The Nook’, a purpose-built children’s hospice in Norfolk. This generous donation will see the brand sponsor a space within the garden named ‘The Nest’, which aims to be an outdoor oasis where children and their loved ones can go to rest and recharge.

Bridgemere Show Gardens – restored and reinvigorated by Blue Diamond Group

Bridgemere Show Gardens, now owned by the Blue Diamond Group, are once again restored to their former glory following an extensive restoration and rejuvenation and are to be re-launched on May 20 at 1pm...

Bridgemere Show Gardens, now owned by the Blue Diamond Group, are once again restored to their former glory following an extensive restoration and rejuvenation and are to be re-launched on the May 20 at 1pm.

These Gardens include 3 RHS Chelsea Medal winning show gardens.

Formally known as ‘The Garden Kingdom’, and founded by John Ravenscroft in the 1980s to inspire amateur gardeners, these Show Gardens were once a popular visitor destination, attracting people from all over the UK and overseas.  It is one of the only places in the UK where you can see a collection of RHS award-winning gardens from past, to the present day.

The Blue Diamond Group have resurrected the Gardens to their former glory.                                                                                                                                                        Sadly, the Gardens fell into disrepair when John retired in 2006 and it was only when the Blue Diamond Group bought Bridgemere Garden Centre, the Gardens and the adjoining nursery in October 2019, that work has been undertaken in the Gardens to resurrect and restore them to their former glory.

Bridgemere Show Gardens is located within Bridgemere Garden Centre, Nantwich, Cheshire.

It is a 6-acre garden and in total, home to 13 individual gardens, including seven RHS gold and silver medal award- winning show garden which are recreations from RHS Chelsea, RHS Hampton Court and RHS Tatton Flower Shows. Many of the plants in the Show Gardens are grown in our nursery and are available to buy from our Garden Centre.

The Bridgemere Show Gardens also include other medal winning show garden recreations from the Garden Festivals in Hanley and Liverpool as well as the garden in which the 1993 television series 'Gardener's Diary' was filmed. (Between 1993 and 1997, the TV series, ‘A Gardener’s Diary,’ was filmed from these Gardens and aired on Grampian, Border, West Country, Carlton and RTE Dublin TV).

Eden buzzing with activity for May half-term full of fun

The Eden Project in Cornwall will be all abuzz over May half-term with a joyous celebration of bees, nature and communities, culminating in The Big Jubilee Lunch on Sunday June 5.

From May 28 to June 5, visitors will be able to follow an all-new and interactive Create-a-Buzz trail and learn how to make their own bee-friendly garden.

On arrival they will also receive a free family pack full of pollinator-friendly games and activities inspired by the launch of Pollinator Pathmaker at Eden, a major new 55-metre-long living artwork created by Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg.

The unique artwork explores the vital role of pollinators. It is in a dramatic setting, positioned on a sloping bank near the top of the former clay quarry and facing the world-famous Eden Biomes.

Pollinator Pathmaker comprises 7,000 plants from 64 species and seeks to challenge who a garden is for. By half-term it will be blooming and ready for both the ‘human’ public and pollinating species - including bees, moths, beetles, and wasps - to engage with and enjoy.

Meanwhile, anyone in Northern Europe can now be a part of Pollinator Pathmaker by planting their own garden at home; in a window box, in a garden, with their community, school or friends. This can be kickstarted by creating a garden plan at pollinator.art.

Pollinator Pathmaker was originally commissioned by the Eden Project with the support of Garfield Weston Foundation as part of Create a Buzz.

Additional partners include Gaia Art Foundation and collaborators Google Arts & Culture.

Elsewhere, adding to the half-term entertainment will be CBBC Blue Peter Gardener Lee Connelly, also known as The Skinny Jean Gardener. Lee will be bringing his acclaimed Gardening Entertainment Show to the Mediterranean Biome from Monday to Friday.

Visitors will be able learn from Lee how to grow their own produce, look after wildlife and have fun in the garden, all while playing family games with the opportunity to win prizes.

Throughout the week, Eden will be celebrating Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with whole range of creative craft activities and a chance to take part in a huge collaborative artwork.

The major moment will be on Sunday June 5, where Eden will hold its very own Big Jubilee Lunch. For this day only and as part of the official celebrations for the Platinum Jubilee, Eden is opening its doors to the community and offering free entry to enable everyone to come together and take part in The Big Jubilee Lunch.

Kate Francis, Producer with Eden Live Productions, said: “With the launch of Pollinator Pathmaker, appearances from The Skinny Jean Gardener and the build up to The Big Jubilee Lunch, May half-term will be an extremely exciting and fun time to visit Eden.

“We have always prided ourselves as being a hub for the local community and with June 5 also being World Environment Day, it is only fitting that we are inviting everyone to come and celebrate The Big Jubilee Lunch with us and their loved ones free of charge. It promises to be a very special week and an extra-special day on June 5.”

For more information on Eden’s May half-term activities and to book free entry for Sunday June 5 go to www.edenproject.com.

I am really pleased to have been given this opportunity and am excited for the opportunities for me to learn and grow in horticulture.”

Anna Cooper, studying at Lackham College, has been awarded the John Gibson scholarship. Garden Product Top 50 sales volumes are 4% ahead of 2019 levels on a year to date basis but for the month of April they were 24% down on last year, on a par with April 2019.

Plant feeds dominate the Top 50 with only one garden decorative line in the Top 50.  The focus really is on growing in the garden at the moment rather than relaxing.  Hopefully that will come on tap as the weather warms up and people start planning for the Jubilee long weekend.

Highlights of the week were:

  • Evergreen Garden Care Levington Tomorite 1L + 30% Free stays at No 1 and Evergreen Garden Care Levington Tomorite 1L + 20% Extra Free joins it at No 2 moving up 4 places this week.
  • Westland Fish Blood & Bone 1.5kg is the highest chart climber of the week, up 13 places to No 17.
  • Smart Garden’s 12 inch Coco Liner Twin Pack is the highest new entry at No 38.

Fifty new products announced by Garland Products

Garland Products is launching over 50 new products at Glee 2022 (Stand: 20H30-J31).  The items comprise new garden furniture covers, additions to its garden basics range, plant support trellis and a budget friendly propagator.

The new cover range extends the company’s popular Super Tough covers which have only been available in green in the past.  Now the entire range will be available in black in order to make them well-suited to modern furniture trends and colours.  The covers are part of Garland’s entry level cover range but are still covered by the company’s market-leading 5-year guarantee.  There are 44 covers in the range, offering the ultimate protection for garden furniture, barbecues and outdoor heaters.

New extra value packs that include screw eyes, vine eyes, wire fleece and fabric pegs have been added to Garland’s garden basics range.  The new packs will enable consumers to purchase bigger and better value packs, making them particularly suitable for larger gardening jobs.

Garland’s plant support trellis range comprising three designs was first introduced at Glee last year and due to its popularity, the company has added a fourth design.  The new leaf design trellis will be available in the same four sizes as the current range.

Completing Garland’s new products’ launch is a budget friendly Black XL High Dome Propagator that is being introduced as a result of considerable customer demand.  The large propagator has a lower price point, enabling garden centres to offer their customers a great value promotion, whilst not affecting their core range and sales.

Following the most successful pre-season in the company’s history, Garland’s sales director, Mark Dedman, commented: “In the first two months of this year we posted an increase in sales of 8 per cent on 2021, which at the time was our best ever year.  This was achieved without delays in our delivery times.  We are confident of maintaining this situation as later this year will see our new £160,000 software system go live.  The system comprises the most state of the art warehouse management software that will lead to faster order processing and deliveries, along with a greater intelligence in our sales trends to ensure that the right stock is available all season long.  It will also increase our capacity during peak times.  Our desire to continually improve services to customers has also seen the launch of our new website with a dedicated trade online ordering facility.  This will help speed-up our order processing and allow customers to identify their favourite items for fast, easy ordering.

“Our excellent sales figures have further benefitted from the opening of our new showroom which has resulted in positive feedback and also several new customers.”

The Garland Products Group specialises in the manufacture of plastic injection moulded products and is one of the fastest growing suppliers to the garden industry.  The products available to both keen or hobby gardeners have been designed through the company’s own experience as keen gardeners.

Sundaville Flamingo Pink is out and empowers all the characteristics you want to see in a beachy vibe ornamental plant. Introduced on the market in 2021 by breeders and introducer MNP / Suntory, now the time has come for the pink flamingo to show itself in all its beauty and take flight during this summer of 2022.

Do the flamingo this summer!

Everybody was waiting for this moment: the new Sundaville Flamingo Pink will be finally available for everyone who wants to enjoy its soft and pink colours and imagine itself in Ibiza during the summer…

This variety is (almost) nowhere else available. The Flamingo Pink is unique because of the beautiful drawing on the flower. Its bright coloured flowers will have you for long summer evenings and it is a carefree plant. Sundaville Flamingo Pink amazes with her non-stop blooming and growing for half a year until the first frost. As a consumer, you can't help but love it and enjoy it!

Sundaville Flamingo Pink now available for growers & propagators

The colour of the Flamingo Pink is unique, her flowers are flamed light pink complemented with dark pink speckles and resemble the feathers of a flamingo. It promises to become one of the bestsellers within the Mandevilla segment within a short time. Sundaville Flamingo Pink has the same strengths as the Classic collection. She will continue to flower until the first night of frost, requires little maintenance and care and will be the favourite of many European consumers.

If you are interested in clean starting tissues or young plants you can easily contact Klaas Droog, Sales & License Manager at MNP / Suntory via k.droog@mnpflowers.com

… and also for (online) retailers & consumers!

Sundaville Flamingo Pink is so distinctive that it is immediately recognisable on the shelves: its presence will catch the eyes of all customers because no other plant has such distinctive and characteristic colours. If you don't have the variety on your shelves, just contact the retailer BeautyPlants.

If you are an end consumer and are looking for the right vibes to give your patio, garden, or balcony a beachy, tropical feel, Sundaville Flamingo Pink is the perfect plant for you. You can buy it yourself directly from www.mandevillashop.com which ships in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, France, and Austria!

Beyond the brand

The Sundaville brand was born 20 years ago when Dutch skill and precious Japanese genetics joined forces to produce the first red Mandevilla in history. Now, Sundaville has become the world's largest and best brand in Mandevilla. There is much love, passion, and energy invested in developing a wide range. Meanwhile, the Sundaville® collection of varieties with different flower sizes, colours and leaf types has grown up. Breeders from across Europe have embraced the brand and continue to grow it because of its resistance and extreme and incomparable brightness of colours.

Sundaville in the Future

Sundaville is the patio plant of the future. Every consumer can take care of a Sundaville! Her skill to continue blooming is surprising and amazing, even with little watering. Breeder and licensor MNP / Suntory in Leimuiderbrug see the future for Sundaville as very positive.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show: A spotlight on MEDITE SMARTPLY MDF and OSB panels

As excitement builds for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, all eyes are not only on the incredible gardens and talented designers, but on the plants, and products used in their creations...

As excitement builds for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, all eyes are not only on the incredible gardens and talented designers, but on the plants, and products used in their creations.

Alongside this year’s ‘wild’ theme, sustainability and climate change are the big talking points. Engineered wood panel manufacturer MEDITE SMARTPLY aims to showcase the brand’s commitment to longevity and wellness and most importantly, sustainability.

As a responsible manufacturer of engineered wood construction panels, the company is committed to manufacturing products that contribute to healthier, environmentally conscious buildings. The MEDITE SMARTPLY Building the Future Garden will feature some of the company’s most innovative products.

Chris King, Managing Director – Commercial at MEDITE SMARTPLY, said:

“With the RHS Chelsea Flower Show just around the corner, we are beyond excited to see the finished garden and be part of the incredible buzz at the world-renowned event!

“The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is the perfect opportunity to not only showcase to the world the incredible possibilities of engineered wood panels, but to demonstrate how versatile and environmentally conscious MEDITE SMARTPLY products are. Following on from the event, the garden and building will be reused in another location, which further demonstrates our company’s commitment to sustainability and the environment.”

The centrepiece of the garden is being constructed using MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME (MTX) which provides manufacturers, fabricators, and designers unlimited creative freedom. This remarkable lightweight, engineered wood panel is guaranteed up to 50 years above ground and 25 years in ground and is especially beneficial in environments where humidity and varying weather are usually concerns.

MTX is an acetylated MDF and can be used in applications where normal MDF panels cannot. However, it still retains all the design, fixing, and machining flexibility of regular MDF panels.

Designed by multi-award-winning landscape architect and garden designer Sarah Eberle, and supported by Alex and Emma Devereux, the structure is inspired by natural vertical rock strata, such as those seen in the cliffs of Devon and Cornwall, which show a cross section of millions of years of plate movements and development. The structure aims to demonstrate MTX throughout its life cycle and show the versatility of engineered wood panels.

MTX also featured in the 2019 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. MEDITE SMARTPLY partnered with Wallgarden, bespoke maker of children’s playhouses, and Sarah Eberle to create a miniature Hampshire-style cottage and miniature London Shop for the garden, which was located on Main Avenue.

In addition, two SMARTPLY products will make an appearance at the garden. SMARTPLY STRONGDECK and SMARTPLY SITEPROTECT PLUS.

SMARTPLY STRONGDECK is an extremely high-performance 30mm thick tongue and groove OSB/4 panel designed for the most demanding structural applications. Manufactured using state of the art ContiRoll® technology, it is suitable for heavy duty, load bearing environments, durable mezzanine flooring and industrial warehousing and storage unit floor space additions.

The garden will be protected with SMARTPLY SITEPROTECT PLUS, a pre-coated on both sides, structural OSB/3 site hoarding panel that allows users to protect their sites or display brand messages to the wider public.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show will take place 24th-28th May.

MEDITE SMARTPLY have a dedicated online MDF community site which invites MDF enthusiasts to share work, gain inspiration and even win prizes that will enable the user to build bigger and better with MDF: www.meditemakesitreal.com

This year’s edition of Glee will be home to the show’s biggest contingent of global brands since 2019, bringing together a spectacular showcase of European design and a window into how gardening is developing in international markets.

Leading the way will be the Netherlands contingent. Featuring a host of prominent Dutch gardening brands alongside emerging names, this strong international launchpad will rival mainland European events which often play host to these bellwether companies.

Look out for Elho, Kaemingk, Capi Europe, Kapiteyn B.V., Edelman, Madison B.V., Impulse Plants B.V., Bonfeu, JAVADO, 200 Fahrenheit, Plenty Gifts, Green Inspiration Plants, and Smiemans Projecten B.V.

French suppliers, including Forest Style SAS (Soulet / Cerland), Vertiable SAS, Paysagea SAS and Hareau (Weenect), will similarly see their exhibition presence increase thanks to Glee’s new partnership with Team France Export, Business France and the Choose France™ initiative, which has been set up to shine the spotlight on the uniqueness of French design to a wider global audience.

Also, joining the Glee 2022 exhibitor line up will be key suppliers from Germany - including Scheurich and Burstenhaus Redecker Gmbh - as well as Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Moldova, Norway and Poland, completing the European lineup. Canada, India, Korea and a small Chinese delegation will similarly be showcasing new products and services from these unique consumer markets.

Matthew Mein, Glee Event Director, said: “It’s great to see so many more European and global brands joining us at Glee this June. There is no question that our new dateline position has opened up the potential of Glee to a much wider audience, enabling them to access Glee’s platform at a more convenient time within the buying and events calendar.

“We’re excited to host these important brands onsite at the NEC and welcoming back a selection of leading European companies that have not presented their ranges at Glee for some time. This year Smiemans Projecten is completing a new garden centre of 7,250 square metres for Gardheimar in Reykjavik.

The design is by the international architectural firm PK Arkitektar.

The large window displays, the green roof, the vertical wooden blinds and the architectural facade will give this garden centre the biophilic look that suits their industry.

The 90-metre-wide building with an asymmetrical roof will have a central hall of 25 metres wide. In this central hall with a height of 12 metres a mezzanine floor will be realised. This floor will accommodate offices, canteen and social areas for staff.

The garden centre will have a fully catered restaurant and many attractive shop-in-shops.

The warehouse is equipped with a green roof.

A canopy around the outside area will be built so that customers can shop comfortably even in bad weather.

In the last few weeks members of staff from The Pot Place Garden Centre have made two journeys to take aid for Ukranian refugees being cared for in a village they have connections with in Poland, thanks to the fantastic fundraising efforts and donations of staff, customers and friends.

They now want to support the Ukrainian emergency services who are doing an incredible job helping both civilian and military casualties. A number of organisations have already taken ex NHS ambulances to Poland for onward shipment to Ukraine. The Pot Place Garden Centre wants to do the same and have made the contacts to do so.

They just need your help to raise £9,500 for the vehicle. "Our garden centre will pay for the servicing, insurance, documents, fuel and ferry to get there and flights to get back. We have volunteer drivers too and together we will make this happen," explained Paul from the Cumbrian garden centre.

Donations can be made at the garden centre or via their Just Giving page. https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/the-pot-place-ambulance-to-ukraine?utm_term=4x4b7AgeW

Greenfingers opens new sensory garden at Tŷ Hafan Children’s Hospic

The 62nd Greenfingers Charity garden at Tŷ Hafan children’s hospice was officially opened by BBC Radio 2’s resident gardener, Terry Walton.  Ty Hafan is one of the UK’s leading paediatric palliative care charities, offering care to children with life-limiting conditions and their families throughout Wales...

Last Wednesday, 27th April, the 62nd Greenfingers Charity garden at Tŷ Hafan children’s hospice was officially opened by BBC Radio 2’s resident gardener, Terry Walton.  Ty Hafan is one of the UK’s leading paediatric palliative care charities, offering care to children with life-limiting conditions and their families throughout Wales.

Designed by multi-RHS gold medal-winning garden designers, Victoria Wade Landscapes; brought to life by NP Landscapes; and project managed by Joe Wade, this new interactive sensory garden space – funded by The National Heritage Lottery, The Postcode Lottery and many wonderful friends of Greenfingers - will provide year-round accessibility for children with life-limiting conditions and their families while staying at or visiting Tŷ Hafan’s hospice at Sully, near Cardiff, as well as staff and volunteers.

The sensory garden has been designed to encourage biodiversity, sustainability and wildlife, helping children to be able to connect easily with the natural world. The garden also benefits from willow arches, a woodland den, covered seating area with access to electricity and hand-washing facilities.

Talking about the design, Victoria Wadesaid: “This is definitely my favourite garden we have ever created. I am really proud of what we have all achieved. It's been such an amazing team effort and I have been blown away by the generosity of everyone who has been involved - everyone has gone above and beyond. It’s been so exciting to see the garden come into bloom this spring and seeing the thousands of bulbs that the volunteers have planted flowering for the first time has been really special.”

Project ManagerJoe Wade said: “It’s been such a great project to be involved with. I know the garden will benefit so many people - we have been overwhelmed by how many lovely comments we have had during the build from the hospice staff, volunteers and families who are so excited to spend time in the new garden. It’s been such a great team effort from everyone involved.”

Deb Ho, Tŷ Hafan’s Director of Care, said: “Tŷ Hafan children’s hospice provides care and support for children with life-limiting conditions and their families in Wales at our hospice in Sully, near Cardiff. The creation of our stunning new sensory garden is a wonderful addition to the coastal environment in which we care for those children and families who use our services. Our sincerest thanks go to Greenfingers Charity and its supporters for helping to make this possible, and to Victoria, Joe and NP Landscapes for their dedication to this project. What they have created has far exceeded our expectations and I know that this garden is already an important place for so many.”

Terry Walton, BBC Radio 2’s resident gardener and guest of honour at the event, said: “This new sensory garden is a gorgeous new addition to Tŷ Hafan beautiful hospice grounds, which I know are cared for by a team of dedicated and talented volunteer gardeners. It therefore gives me great pleasure to officially open this wonderful sensory garden today and I am sure that it will give everyone who visits, stays at or works at Tŷ Hafan in the coming months and years, both enormous pleasure as well as peace and great solace during some of the most difficult times imaginable.”

The completion of the garden was thanks to the team of Greenfingers supporters who helped to plant thousands of bulbs and plants, including Woodlodge – led by Ian Flounders; Pugh’s Garden Centre team; Giant Veg Grower, Kevin Fortey; Greenfingers Trustee, Neil Sewell, and the incredible hospice garden volunteers – who worked hard to finalise the planting, ahead of today’s opening event.

Gifts in kind were also generously donated by Evergreen Garden Care, Taylors Bulbs, Jubb Bulbs, Smart Garden and Kent and Stowe.

At the garden opening, Greenfingers Chairman, Sue Allen: “It is our great pleasure to officially hand over the garden to all those at Tŷ Hafan children’s hospice. The teams at Victoria Wade and NP Landscapes have, not only produced an incredible vision, but have brought it to life in such an awe-inspiring way, creating a truly stunning space that is focused on bringing nature to its very heart. On behalf of all of us at Greenfingers and Tŷ Hafan, we thank you and all our wonderful supporters from the bottom of our hearts.”

Pughs Garden Centre, who were amongst the local supporters of the new garden reported on their facebook page: "Today is a special day as it marks the grand opening of the wonderful new sensory garden at Tŷ Hafan and it was such an honour to be invited to attend.

"The sensory garden has been designed and planted with the children and their families in mind, as time spent outdoors, away from the bedside, can offer children and families under considerable stress a vital opportunity to embrace the benefits of being in the fresh air and engaging with the natural environment.

"The new garden is fully accessible with different areas to experience such as the under cover area to watch the birds & wildlife.

"It's been such a pleasure to follow the progress of this garden, and be a part of the journey with two of our team Megan (from PughsRadyr) & Mike (from PughsWenvoe) volunteering to help the project."

The first of three phases at Garston Docks, Liverpool, has recently been completed to increase Meadow View Stone’s washing and pre-pack production by 60,000 tonnes/annum.

The facilities, designed and constructed to include an additional 16 external storage bays, a state-of-the-art washing plant, four fully robotic bagging lines, and a new 20,000 ft2 warehouse which provides the group with an additional stock holding of £5million.

Having won the 2021 GIMA Supplier of the Year award due to an ability to efficiently meet customer volumes and delivery schedules, this further investment enables the business to react to its continued growing demand.

High levels of stock are now held across the groups four production sites and three dockside storage facilities. As well as ensuring the product range is readily available and close to its customers, these strategically located sites help to reduce vehicle movements/mileage so contribute to reducing the businesses carbon footprint.

Sarah Hill, Managing Director, stated: “The fundamental strategy of the Group is to be fully in control of the whole supply chain. We have worked hard in developing key supply agreements and new products with our European partners.

“Managing the bulk shipping of these products and investing in the infrastructure with the latest production processing equipment is the next step for the business.

“Our existing, and new locations such as Garston, place us in very strongly positioned to facilitate further growth in the garden centre market.”
