Radio 2 Gardens steal the show - and provide great themes for retail displays

The five BBC Radio 2 gardens at RHS Chelsea stole the show on Press day morning with live broadcasts by Chris Evans and the other presenters and the themes used could be easily replicated in garden centre settings.

Anneka Rice's flower cutting garden, Zoe Ball's sound garden, Chris Evans' Taste garden, Jo Whiley's Scent garden and Jeremy Vines Texture garden were all crowd pullers and judging by the levels of interest and the parallels with Radio 2 audiences and garden centre shoppers the concepts could all make great Chelsea themed sales displays for the rest of the summer.

Evening presenter Jo Whiley even found time to have breakfast on the Kadai stand which is adjacent to her garden.

Great success for HTA 40 Sunbury Road exhibit at Chelsea following a busy press day

The industry exhibit ’40 Sunbury Road’ has achieved a Silver Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and one of the featured new plants Dwarf Mulberry Charlotte Russe from Suttons has taken the title of RHS Plant of the Year.

The industry exhibit ’40 Sunbury Road’ has achieved a Silver Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and one of the featured new plants Dwarf Mulberry Charlotte Russe from Suttons has taken the title of RHS Plant of the Year.

The garden, put together by the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) and The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL), is run in conjunction with Peter Seabrook and The Sun and is a celebration of Peter’s 40 years working at the newspaper.

APL member Bowood Landscapes have helped to build the garden, which features ideas and inspiration from a typical modest suburban back garden, and celebrates and promotes the vibrant and strong garden and landscape industry that we have in the UK with growers and suppliers providing plants and sundries.

The exhibit received a lot of interest at the press day on Monday 22 May including a Royal visit from Sophie, Countess of Wessex. Other visitors to the garden included Joan Collins, Susan George, Jerry Hall, Rupert Murdoch, Alan Titchmarsh, Deborah Meaden and Baroness Floella Benjamin.

See our gallery of photos below.

Peter Seabrook was presented with a bottle of champagne by HTA President Adam Wigglesworth and HTA Director of Operations Martin Simmons, to thank him for the work he and his team had done to help coordinate the garden.

The exhibit also saw the launch of the import substitution for oak report with HTA Head of Horticulture Raoul Curtis -Machin, HTA President Adam Wigglesworth and Kevin Hobbs from Hillier Nurseries.

The 16m x 5m plot in the Great Marquee features plants and sundries from growers and suppliers all of which are available nationwide in UK garden centres. This includes hanging baskets from Kerleys, Haskins Garden Centre, Bents Garden and Home and Aylett Nurseries, mint planted teapots grown by school children and dementia sufferers, as seen here with Robert Hillier, his wife and Peter Seabrook.

The garden features over 15 new plants including five that were entered for RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year including the winner - Dwarf Mulberry Charlotte Russe from Suttons), Pelargonium PAC Spanish Wine Rose (Cramden Nursery), Betula pendula ‘Fastigiata Joes’ (Frank P Matthews), Lilly Sunset Joy (Pinetops Nurseries) and Strawberry Just Add Cream (Thompson & Morgan) which was so tasty Deborah Meaden had to return with Susan George to taste some more.

Westland Horticulture’s ‘Rising Stars’ have created specially planted containers, with the three Rising Stars themselves (Emma Blackmore from Bents Garden & Home, Kathryn Hunt from Stewarts Garden Centre and Sarah Stewart from Klondyke, Polmont) will also be at the Show on Thursday, May 25 to tell the story of their unusual planted containers.

The garden also features the Wonderwall vertical planting system with strawberries, thyme, salad and confetti plants – demonstrating how outdoor space can effectively use height to gain impact. Perennial, working with Fiddlehead Products, provided a roof top fairy garden on the featured shed within the garden, providing added interest with plants and conifers from Gedney Bulb Plant Company and Golden Grove Nurseries.

Forest Garden provided the shed and the decibel noise reduction panels with WoodBlocX providing raised beds, Bradstone the paving and a patio cleaning equipment from Hozelock.

Companies and brands from across the industry have joined together to contribute to 40 Sunbury Road including Aylett Nurseries, Armlee Nurseries, Ball Colegrave, Barcham, Benary, Bents Garden & Home, Big,  Cramden Nursery, Dobies, Double H Nurseries,  Eden, Evi loves you!, Fleuroselect, Floranova, Forest Garden, Frank P Matthews, Genesis, Haskins Garden Centres, Hozelock,  KADO, Majestic Trees, Myerscough College,  Neudorff, Pinetops, Plants for Europe, Quantil, Rolawn,  Seiont, Stewarts Garden Centre, Suttons, The David Colegrave Foundation, Thompson & Morgan, Westland, WoodBlocX, WonderWall, Wyevale Nurseries amongst others.  Many thanks to them all.

Crocus buys its first bricks and mortar garden centre - and it won't be the last - Chelsea update

Following on from the announcement about the purchase of Dorney Court Kitchen Garden more "clicks and bricks" aquisitions appear to be in the pipeline.

Buyer John Hiorns told GTN Xtra on Monday at Chelsea that they have plans to buy more sites to extend their operation.  When asked which areas of the country they were looking at for their new business development John explained: "We know where all of our existing Crocus customers live from our seventeen years of internet trading. So we have a good idea where we will be able to reach them."

"The garden centre developments mean we can make more headway in selling the specialist and bespoke items we've been developing over recent years, of the sort we are selling here at Chelsea.  But we will have to learn about coffee too!"

Crocus celebrated at Chelsea with their 9th Best in Show award for their build and planting of the M&G Maltese Quarry Garden, pictured below.

Dorney Court Kitchen Garden located at Court Lane, Dorney, Buckinghamshire, has been sold to online garden centre and plant supplier, Crocus.

The sale was handled confidentially by Alexander Mackie Associates Ltd. on behalf of their client, Ryan Wasmuth.

The acquisition is Crocus's first bricks and mortar garden centre.

A spokesman for Alexander Mackie said: "We would like to convey our best wishes to our client and his family and to Crocus for the future."

Guy Hands and Gemma Arterton, who will be filming the new film about Vita Sackville-West in Kent this summer, attracted one of he biggest paparazzi crowds on the Burncoose Garden.

Scotts Miracle-Gro won Best Discovery exhibit in The Great Pavillion

and in our opinion, purple was the dominant planting colour theme for Chelsea 2017.

Sales explosion of local wine at Green Pastures GC

Green Pastures Garden Centre in Norfolk experienced a 'sales explosion' of a wine from a local vineyard after it was declared 'The World's Best White Wine'.

James Debbage, from Green Pastures, explained:  "In 30 years of retailing I have just experienced my greatest 'sales explosion' of a product! On Friday the local and national media broke the story that a local vineyard had won an award for one of their wines that we stock.

"Bacchus 2015 from Winbirri Vineyard in Surlingham near Norwich was declared 'The World's Best White Wine' (in the single varietal category) competing against 17,000 plus other entries!

"Being one of Winbirri's most local stockists (they are 3.5 miles away) ITV included us in their news story and came to film our restaurant and farm shop.

"Sales immediately went beserk and instead of selling our usual 1-2 cases of Bacchus a week, we sold nearly 30 cases in the last three days.

"Just about everyone else in the area sold out immediately but as the vineyard is so close and we have a really good relationship with Lee the owner, we were able keep resupplying throughout the weekend.

"Such has been the demand, I have had to restock four days running and on Saturday alone our Bacchus sales exceeded £1000!

"Some customers were even buying whole cases of it and we even had to start rationing it at one point to two bottles per customer so we didn't disapoint too many people. I thought you might find this little story interesting."

Hopes for footfall to rise in the warmer weather

According to GTN Bestsellers, plant, veg and growing media sales all fared better year-on-year than decorative and core gardening products during the second week of May so there is plenty of desire and potential for all garden centre sales to soar when footfall gets back to ‘normal’ early summer levels.

What will the warmer, but wetter weather bring for garden centre sales? That is the question on everyone’s mind as at last the cold winds switch round to the South and South-West.

Hopefully, the change in conditions should encourage people out into their gardens and get things growing after a period of almost ‘hibernation’ during the past three weeks.

Plant sales, veg plant sales and growing media sales all fared better year-on-year than decorative and core gardening products during the second week of May so there is plenty of desire and potential for all garden centre sales to soar when footfall gets back to ‘normal’ early summer levels.

Pest control products should certainly sell well over the next few weeks as slugs and bugs wake up.

And what effect will the RHS Chelsea Flower Show have on plant sales? Have you got your stunning displays of Lupins, Dephiniums, Digitalis and Hydrangeas ready for customers trolleys? GTN will report on the plants that grab the headlines at Chelsea next week.

BBQs are for life, not just for Summer
GTN Xtra Promotion: Rexmartins’ outdoor living range is ideal whatever the weather
Rexmartins’ luxury RMB outdoor living range of modular kitchens provides a long-term solution for customers wanting to take garden entertaining to the next level.
BBQing is now an all-year activity. Outdoor living and BBQ culture is having a positive effect as consumers want to have fun outdoors – and they’re prepared to spend more money on high-quality equipment to ensure this happens.

Rexmartins’ luxury RMB outdoor living range of modular kitchens provides a long-term solution for customers wanting to take garden entertaining to the next level.

The build quality of RMB outdoor modular kitchens is second-to-none. The units, which include a choice of gas and charcoal BBQs, are crafted from the highest quality 304 stainless steel, meaning they won’t rust.

The gas BBQ option uses LPG (Liquid Propane Gas), which is more energy efficient than other gases, so even in the height of winter, the BBQ can be heated to full temperature in just six minutes. Being easy to clean means you won’t be left in the cold, no matter what the season.

In addition to the state-of-the-art BBQs, the energy efficient RMB outdoor living range includes premium accessories as standard, such as a rotisserie to add theatre to the outdoor cooking experience.

Popular with the most discerning customers, RMB upgrade features can create the ultimate bespoke outdoor entertaining area. Upgrades products include gas hobs, bottle coolers, fridges, waste bin cabinets and a sink unit featuring an optional 2.5kw water heater to provide a hot and cold water supply outside.

Being a modular range has massive benefits, any combination in any shape is possible. The range has become an eye-catching talking point in garden centres across the country, with customers enjoy designing their bespoke outdoor kitchens in store.

The RMB range also includes Cook Stations with built-in extraction systems, eliminating the need for an external unit, as well as an array of modular induction cooking units, which are far more energy efficient than more traditional machines as they heat only what is required rather than the whole unit. Customers love the substantial savings on energy usage and running costs.

The RMB range is manufactured by pioneering catering supplier, Rexmartins and comes with a two-year warranty.

We will be exhibiting the RMB range at Glee this year – come and see us!

Rexmartins’ welcome customers to their interactive showroom in Tunbridge Wells. For further information about products, please contact T: 0800 111 4 333 or email info@rexmartins.com. www.rexmartins.com.

Family-owned garden centre group Notcutts, will be welcoming a visitor with very green fingers to its stores this summer when Shrek the Ogre will be taking a break from his London attraction to encourage children to get planting in their gardens.

The partnership between Notcutts and attraction DreamWorks Tours: Shrek’s Adventure! London aims to encourage children to discover their own ‘green’ fingers and get planting.

The partnership will kick off this May with a focus on bee-friendly gardening. Notcutts garden centres will be hosting an activity trail themed around Barry B Benson from DreamWorks’ Bee Movie. The trail will showcase bee-friendly plants and help young gardeners to encourage more bees and other wildlife to their gardens. At Shrek’s Adventure! London, the Bee Movie experience will offer visitors a glimpse into Barry B Benson’s world and to find out why plants and gardens are so important to Barry and all his buzzing buddies.

In the summer, Shrek and Princess Fiona will be visiting Notcutts garden centres around the country, sharing their own gardening tips and teaching children how to make their very own swamp gardens. At Shrek’s Adventure! London young visitors will receive their own ‘swamp garden’ seed packs to take home and see how green they can be!

Commenting on the partnership Julie Murray, Marketing Director at Notcutts said; “We are delighted to be teaming up with Shrek’s Adventure! London to encourage more children to get outdoors, whether it is to help wildlife or to create their own little garden. Gardening is such a fabulous hobby that gets children outside, using their imagination and hopefully having lots of fun too!”

Steve Blackburn, General Manager for Shrek’s Adventure! London concluded; “Our attraction is all about whisking our guests away to the magical land of Far Far Away and we wanted to extend that magic experience by giving them a little bit of ‘green fingered’ magic to take home to their own garden this summer.”

Three Rising Stars will be taking part at Chelsea flower Show this week, having created a specially planted container to exhibit. The Rising Stars themselves will be travelling to Chelsea on Thursday, May 25 to tell the story of their container, which is based around the theme of ‘unusual containers’.

The containers will take pride of place in the ’40 Sunbury Road’ garden in the Great Pavilion next week. The garden has been created by the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) in conjunction with Peter Seabrook and The Sun and is a celebration of Peter’s 40 years working at the newspaper.

It aims to create a typical modest suburban back garden that consumers can relate to, whilst at the same time inspire and provide some new and interesting ideas that could easily be copied. Plants and sundries have been provided by suppliers and growers for this collaborative industry exhibit.

Here’s what the Rising Stars had to say about their creations which will be featured in the garden:

Kathryn Hunt – Stewarts Garden Centre in Christchurch, Dorset

"My container is created in homage to my beloved Labrador Harley who died last year. one of Harley's favourite pastimes was going for walks in Black Park, a vast woodland area with fields and heathlands and also a massive man-made lake. The plants in the container are plants that grow there throughout the park. The rustic planter and the bark that have been used to top dress it, add to the 'woodland' look."

Sarah Stewart – Klondyke Garden Centre in Falkirk, Scotland

“I will be using a kettle barbeque as the container with a mini garden inside. This will be planted with a selection of alpines, ferns and grasses, some lovely pebbles to give it a landscaped look and some bunting to give a real sense of celebration.”

Emma Blackmore – Bents Garden Centre in Glazebury, Warrington

“I’ve created my container in a toy car which we have in our children’s Boutique at Bents. It’s planted with some really bright and colourful bedding plants. I got inspiration from my daughter who spends so much time exploring and playing outside but doesn’t tidy up after herself, so you’re sure to find some sort of toy lying around.”

Keith Nicholson, Marketing Director for Westland Horticulture, sponsors of the Rising Stars Programme, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the Rising Stars and their garden centres to exhibit at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

“Not only will they have the opportunity to experience another element of the horticulture industry, but they will also be able to be part of the most important horticultural event in the world.”

Growth Technology Orchid Days are true crowd pleasers

As we approach peak season for growing media and plant food sales, we talk to Manos Kanellos, Sales & Marketing Manager at leading manufacturer Growth Technology about the increasing popularity of orchids.

GTN: Manos, Growth Technology products make regular appearances in GTN’s Bestsellers Top 50, against stiff competition from other leading brands. How have sales been this year so far?

MK: Simply put, beyond expectations. Our sales grow steadily every year and in March we reached a new record. 2017 promises to be our best year by far.

GTN: What is it about the quality of Growth Technology products that makes them special?

MK: We focus on plants for unparalleled quality. We don’t cut any corners and we go the extra mile to create truly excellent products. For example our fertilisers are urea free, and they contain all of the 14 nutrients plants need. Our Orchid Focus Repotting Mix is simply graded bark for the best results with orchids. In turn our products enjoy a great reputation and a loyal following with the public.

GTN: Persuading consumers that your products are the best is a big challenge. What’s the best way to help garden centres get that message across?

MK: Our product design and packaging conveys quality, and people respond to that, but we also try to educate garden centre staff and customers with talks. Information leaflets, online tutorials and talks all help to convey the message.

GTN: What kind of service can stockists expect from Growth Technology?

MK: We are a good company to do business with. We always try to go the extra mile for customers. We have a wide range of products, a minimum carriage paid order of just £200 and we normally dispatch within one to two days. We supply product stands where required and we help stockists increase sales with events aiming to educate customers on how best to care for orchids. We have helped stockists organise more than 60 events this year so far with excellent feedback from stores and customers.

GTN: What happens at Growth Technology’s ‘Orchid Day’ events?

MK: The format is flexible but an orchid day normally consists of two talks about orchid care, each followed by a plant clinic. People are encouraged to bring their own plants for an MOT and possibly repotting if needed. We have had people bring as many as ten plants for repotting. The average audience is 40 to 50 people with talks often attracting over 70 orchid enthusiasts. These talks are a great way for garden centres to differentiate their offer from other outlets. We have been helping garden centres organise such events for over eight years now and they are growing more popular every year.

Our team of orchid experts include Peter White (President of the Orchid Society of Great Britain), Chris Channon (retired orchid grower), Ian Parsons (Vice-President of the British Orchid Council) and myself, a plant scientist by training. The calibre of people who are involved in these talks is a testament to the quality of our products. They are long days but very rewarding. It is a great feeling to share our enthusiasm about plants and help people grow better orchids.

GTN: Do you have any tips for stockists on how to merchandise your product range to maximise sales?

MK: A brand specific stand in the houseplant area seems to increase sales especially where we attach a TV showing how to best use the products and how to repot an orchid. We are looking to increase the quantity of video clips with tips on how to care for and repot other plants.

GTN: Does the market you operate in have potential for further growth?

MK: Absolutely. Houseplants and orchids always brighten our homes. As the average house and garden gets smaller houseplants satisfy a basic need to have plants and beautiful flowers around us. And let's not forget we also manufacture and sell products for a wide range of plants from palms and olives to tomatoes and chillies.

GTN: Finally, do you have plans for new products or projects that you can share with us?

MK: We have a number of new products in the pipeline but as one of my favourite TV characters says: “I couldn’t possibly comment...”

What garden centres are saying about Growth Technology’s Orchid Days

Jo Dales, marketing manager, Tong Garden Centre: It was an extremely successful event in store that we are keen to repeat. It generated lots of interest and customer feedback was excellent. We saw an increase in both the sale of orchids and orchid-related products.

Katrina Holford, Parker’s Garden Company: Our orchid day was a huge success with over 80 people attending the talks. Houseplants and sundries sales were much increased as a result. Thank you for an extremely interesting and informative orchid day.

Hannah Powell, Perrywood Garden Centre: We have run Orchid Days with Growth Technology for several years now, and they are always well attended. Saturday is always more popular than Sunday. The talks from Peter White and Manos are very informative (although we have to be on hand to stop them talking, they are so passionate!) and the re-potting service is extremely popular, with some people bringing in their entire collections. The main benefit for us is the opportunity to buy in a larger range of orchids for two weeks, and to showcase these stunning plants. Customers keen on orchids know that it's the best time of the year to come in and buy at Perrywood and are delighted when we have something a bit different for sale. Sales of products and orchids do increase as well, and the extra footfall drives sales in the rest of the garden centre and coffee shop.

Daryl Pollard, Sunshine Garden Centre: We have hosted several Orchid Days over the past couple of years. They are usually held twice a year, spring and autumn. Attendance is usually between 20-30. The event is advertised with flyers and posters provided by Growth Technology. Manos gives talks on a host of orchid species and fields all sorts of queries. He also runs a repotting clinic where customers can bring in an orchid for a health check and a repot, resulting in a sale for pots and compost. Customers usually ask when the next one is.

Pets at Glee: an unrivalled profit opportunity
With a recent report suggesting that 70% of UK garden centres now feature a dedicated pet care section, it is clear that the UK's love for their pets shows no sign of slowing.  The trade event that offers pet care suppliers the very best opportunity to communicate with garden centre buyers is Glee (11th - 13th September, NEC Birmingham)...
With a recent report suggesting that 70% of UK garden centres now feature a dedicated pet care section, it is clear that the UK's love for their pets shows no sign of slowing.  But more than this, the statistic shows that pet care sales still have room to grow within the garden centre market, offering pet product suppliers the potential to greatly expand their stockists and market visibility.

The trade event that offers pet care suppliers the very best opportunity to communicate with garden centre buyers is Glee (11th - 13th September, NEC Birmingham).  As the UK's leading trade event for the garden industry, Glee provides access to 99% of garden centre trade association members, but it also offers pet suppliers the opportunity to make contact with wider retailers such as department stores, supermarkets and online outlets - all interested in sourcing the latest pet care innovations.

Matthew Mein, Glee Event Director, said: "Pet care suppliers who exhibit at Glee are in a unique position.  Not only can they communicate with pet retailers who visit the show, but they can access a world of cross-over selling opportunity with garden centre buyers from the UK and abroad.  No other pet trade show can deliver such a varied audience, which is especially important when you look at the ongoing growth and future potential of pet care sales with the garden retail sector.  Whilst 70% of garden centres currently benefit from a dedicated pet care section, it is likely that this number will grow significantly over the next few years.  The fact that Glee captures an audience across all UK garden centres and garden centre buying groups - not to mention top name multiple, high street and on-line retailers - means that pet care suppliers can have direct access to the key decision makers that could help take their business to the next level."

Join the PetQuip Business Village

Introduced in 2015, the PetQuip Business Village is designed to offer pet suppliers wanting to build their presence within garden retailers, a platform to launch and showcase their latest ranges.

Open to both PetQuip members, and non-members, the Business Village will make its home at the heart of Glee, bringing together pet brands with garden retail buyers and key decision makers.  Led by PetQuip - the UK's leading trade association for suppliers of pet products, accessories and services - the 'village' is set to welcome even more pet suppliers in 2017.

Pat Flynn, Trade Association Manager at PetQuip said: "The garden centre market offers great potential growth for pet suppliers.  Garden centres usually have a larger footprint than most High Street independents, which aids effective product displays, and also being able to supply a wider range of products instore.  Customer loyalty and repeat visitors is also the cornerstone of garden centre business, and pet ranges - especially pet food - is a proven way of achieving this, offering profitability for both the retailer and the supplier.

"Pet suppliers exhibiting in the PetQuip Business Village at Glee can benefit from a variety of unique opportunities. Firstly, the brand exposure to a captive audience of garden retailers. Secondly, they can tap into PetQuip's expertise, including everything from 'who's who' amongst retailers, to accessing the ongoing promotional activity prior to and during the show. We also contact overseas buyers, inviting them to visit exhibitors in our area and offering them the services of the international Buyers Centre at the same time."

Somerset-based Durston Garden Products has a reputation for working closely with local schools in an effort to instil gardening skills in children as early as five years old and  their latest project involves working in partnership with All-Hallows Catholic Prep-School in East Cranmore.

Durston’s has donated the much needed bags of compost to All-Hallows School so that students along with the guidance and assistance of their teachers can plant and grow flowers as well as vegetables.

“Planting seeds and watching them grow is a basic life skill which I believe all children should be taught” say’s National Sales Manager, Dan Durston of Durston Garden Products. “As a young boy myself, I remember spending time with my Father and Grandfather In the vegetable garden, and being so excited when a flower suddenly appeared or a tomato started to ripen and I was able to pick it and eat it.

With technology in the form of tablets and TV’s, stealing the minds of so any of our children these days, it is truly critical that as part of their education that they learn about the environment and our impact on it,  and if we here at Durstons can do anything to assist in  that process then we are only too happy to assist.”.

In addition to donating compost to local schools Durstons often host school visits to its facilities in Somerset also, so that students can witness first hand how peat is extracted from the ground and then processed, before being bagged and sent off to garden centres and retail outlets around the country.

We’d normally expect to see increases in bug control, especially slug deterrents during April and May but this just hasn’t happened… yet.

Last week’s data shows slug control product sales down 28% on the same week last year in the GTN Bestsellers Top 50.

The highlights were:
  • Smart Solar Eureka! Lightbulb Lantern was the highest climber.
  • Gardman Hanging Basket Coco Liner was the highest re-entry.

Multifunctional city comfort - these are the outdoor trends of 2017/2018

What in the past was only common in the country or in allotment gardens that were labelled as being square, is now conquering the metropolises...
Carrots in the pot or salad in the box: Trend-conscious city dwellers and even the Hollywood actor Liam Hemsworth take joy in growing their own vegetables. What in the past was only common in the country or in allotment gardens that were labelled as being square, is now conquering the metropolises.

Urban gardening is the buzzword that describes tomatoes, red peppers and strawberries growing on balconies, roof terraces and in back yards. As such a new garden culture has established itself that is become more and more popular all the time. According to a representative GfK survey carried out on behalf of "Apotheken Umschau" (pharmacy publication), in the meantime 39 percent of the consumers, who own a balcony or garden, use them for growing fruit, vegetables and herbs - with an upward trend. Hence, the summer living-room is become real living space. And the consumers want to decorate it in a modern, stylish design. The manufacturers of garden furniture and accessories are currently increasingly discovering the potential of the urban outdoor oases.

Thus, under focus: The city outdoor trend with products that are both elegant as well as practical and space-saving. On top of that multifunctional furniture as well as comfort-providing and ergonomic features are also increasingly finding their way outdoors. In terms of colours, everything revolves around green and barbecuing is becoming smart using elaborate equipment - through to the complete outdoor kitchen. Around 2,000 exhibitors will demonstrate all of the trends and innovations for the outdoor season 2017/18 at the world's largest garden fair, spoga+gafa, which is being staged in Cologne from 3 to 5 September 2017.

Top trend 2017/18: City outdoors is becoming sophisticated.

More and more people are moving to the cities. Instead of a small house in the suburbs, in addition to young people more and more high-income earners are opting for the pulsating city lifestyle. And they not only want to furnish their apartment upclass and stylishly, but also their balcony. That is why there is a large selection of products for the summer season 2017/18 that specifically address this target group. Here the focus is on design-oriented outdoor furniture that can be variably implemented, constantly rearranged in new constellations and stowed away in a space-saving manner. They have a light, dainty appearance and are made of stylish materials that are hardly distinguishable from the indoor versions. The sophisticated balcony world is rounded off by compact sunshades, carpets and lamps as well as plant systems and gardening equipment for urban gardening that allow small areas to be optimally utilised.

Multifunction is the trump card

The days when the outdoor sofa was used exclusively for sitting on are long gone. Not least due to the limited amount of space on balconies and terraces, multifunctional furniture is now increasingly conquering the summer living-room. The manufacturers are convincing with plenty of creativity and are offering true quick-change artists. In this way, at the flick of a wrist a lounger becomes a bench or a daybed becomes a sofa with a table. Stools can also be used as a side table, sunshades offer light and heating functions and plant pots provide additional storage space. The barbecue manufacturers are at the very forefront. In the meantime their models can smoke, roast and bake as well as offering special features such as LED lamps and power bank compatibility.

Things are getting comfortable

High spending power, quality-conscious and growing - this describes the target group of the best agers. According to the experts every second Euro spent in Germany is spent by someone over 50. An attractive clientele that is prepared to dip a little deeper into its pocket for its green oasis - if the products offer added value. Hence, at the moment high-quality furniture that excels with comfort-providing aspects is conquering the outdoor stage. The selection ranges from ergonomically shaped, high chair seats for back-friendly sitting and lying, to sunshades that are operated per foot switch, through to plant pots that allow easy planting. Important here: The appearance and design language of the products are chic and modern. So they don't just address the best agers, but indeed everyone, who likes it comfortable.

Colour trend: Everything is green

That gets everyone in the summer mood: Green is the colour of the year. Whether in the fashion, cosmetics or furnishing sectors - everything is green and blooming. And this trend is now also heading outdoors. A harmonious, coherent overall picture is emerging in interplay with nature. The array ranges from powerful and fresh to muted and dark shades. And since green can be nicely combined with many other colours, the look can be skilfully pepped up: It shines out when combined with yellow, becomes softer with pink and blue lends it all a maritime appearance. Of course, the garden wouldn't be the same without the classic shades white, grey, brown and black.

Grilling 2017: To the stoves

Trends like winter barbecues prove it: People love sizzling outdoors. Since more elaborate and sophisticated options are welcomed, complete outdoor kitchens are increasingly in demand. They are available as either mobile or fixed models. Depending on the user requirements, they almost offer the same equipment as their "indoor sister": from cooking zones, to worktops and sinks through to storage room. Further optional delicacies: Brackets for spits enabling larger roasts to be conveniently cooked. In this way, a 3-course meal can easily be conjured up in the outdoor kitchen. Parallel to this the grills are becoming more and more refined and multifunctional. Food can be smoked, roasted, cooked and baked on the models. It is noticeable that the manufacturers are in the meantime creating complete BBQ worlds. The offer ranges from sandwich inserts to carving knives, through to the cigarette lighter. And in order to continually further increase the sizzling potential, the selection of accessories is permanently being extending to include for example marshmallow grill skewers. New smart features and app connections are constantly being introduced too.  An old tradition is being rediscovered: Plank grilling. Here, fish, meat and vegetables are cooked on planks made of special woods (i.e. alder, hickory or cedar), which produces a special smoking aroma. Also available: Versions made of salt.

Gardening equipment: high-performance and intelligent

Garden owners love designing their green oasis themselves - it just shouldn't be too laborious. Thus, products that facilitate their work are becoming increasingly popular. These include robot lawn mowers and battery-powered devices as well as raised flowerbeds and window boxes that score plus points with their convenience features (i.e. water reservoir). Protection systems for the garden are also gaining in popularity. At the same time the manufacturers in this segment are also discovering the high-spending 50+ generation and are offering them ergonomic tools or comfort-providing aids. The digitalisation is a further mega trend. The selection of intelligent systems for the summer living-room is increasing rapidly. Whether autonomous lawn mowers, smart gardening or grilling: there are hardly any limits to the possibilities for technology-loving gardeners.

Businesses urged to get behind community farms & gardens
UK businesses, big and small, are being urged to take action to support their local community growing groups, many of which struggle to make ends meet...
UK businesses, big and small, are being urged to take action to support their local community growing groups, many of which struggle to make ends meet.

Katie Rushworth, who co-presents ITV's Love Your Garden with Alan Titchmarsh, is launching the 'Business Heroes' campaign with a new video (click here to view), explaining how businesses can benefit and offering practical advice about how to get involved.

Community growing is a simple idea: a group of local people, usually volunteers, get together to transform a patch of land into an oasis of nature, where people can gather, learn, grow and relax.

Katie Rushworth, who runs her own garden design company and is passionate about local food and growing initiatives, says: "Community growing groups make neighbourhoods better, healthier and friendlier places but, with less funding around, many of them struggle. That's why finding 'Business Heroes' to support them is so vital.

"Take my home village in Yorkshire for example. Our local community garden is a place for local residents to get together to transform flowerbeds, containers and baskets but this only happens because of local business sponsorship and volunteers who want to give something back to the place they live and work in."

Regardless of their size, all businesses have something to offer. Some prefer to sponsor a project or offer funding over a longer period whilst others get employees involved in fundraising activities or volunteering. Offering discounts on products or free use of equipment is another way of helping, as well as donating skills and training - anything from website design to book keeping.

There is plenty of evidence to show businesses themselves gain tangible benefits from offering support. It's good for employee health and wellbeing, a practical way of supporting local communities, can improve the local economy and also boosts a company's local reputation.

Statistics from Employee Volunteering, an organisation involved in bringing together business and local communities, reinforce these benefits. 97 per cent of volunteers say activities help develop a strong team and 95 per cent say volunteering has had a positive influence on them.

Many high profile businesses are already taking action for local community growing groups, including Network Rail and Marks and Spencer. Sophie Collett, project manager at Marks and Spencer's Spark Something Good initiative, said: "Volunteering on a community growing site is both motivating and inspiring, something which I'm sure colleagues take back to their daily jobs."

Business Heroes is part of a wider campaign, called Local Heroes, which inspires individuals to support community growing groups in their neighbourhoods. Professional gardener and BBC broadcaster Christine Walkden and TV chef Mark Greenaway have also thrown their weight behind the campaign.

It is estimated there are more than 2,500 community growing groups in the UK. These include city farms, community gardens, community orchards, therapeutic and children's gardens. Most rely on voluntary support and need more help to thrive. According to a recent survey*, nearly half of the community growing groups questioned regularly operated at a loss and the majority felt the success of their project relied on grant funding.

Heidi Seary, project manager of the Growing Together partnership which is spearheading the 'Local Heroes' campaign, said: "We hope our campaign will inspire thousands of people and businesses to take action and do something to support the fantastic work of these groups. The more heroes we create, the more people and businesses will be inspired to do the same, long after the campaign is over.

"Our new toolkit and video will be an invaluable and inspirational resource for businesses who want to take the first steps towards supporting community growing. We would encourage people to read the toolkit if they want to find out more about how to get involved and how doing so can benefit their business."

The Local Heroes campaign is part of Growing Together, a Big Lottery-funded project led by the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens (FCFCG), which is leading the year-long national campaign as part of its work to help bring financial sustainability to the UK's network of community growing groups. Membership of the FCFCG is now free for all such groups.

To find out more about how to become a Business Hero, visit the campaign's Business Heroes page (www.growingtogether.community/business-heroes) where businesses can download the toolkit, watch the video, find details on how to get involved and where their local groups are.

New route planner on FlowerTrials® website
To help visitors make the very most out of the event, FlowerTrials® has designed a brand-new route planner that defines the shortest itinerary and calculates the travel time between locations...

The increasing success of the FlowerTrials® brings new challenges. The number of exhibiters and locations grows each year so careful planning becomes key! A successful FlowerTrials® experience doesn’t have to wait until 13th June, it can start right now.

Planning the journey - Route Planner FlowerTrials
To help visitors make the very most out of the event, FlowerTrials® has designed a brand-new route planner that defines the shortest itinerary and calculates the travel time between locations.

Norman Cools, ICT and PR Manager VWS FlowerBulbs and FlowerTrials® Board Member, is responsible for the website: “The new route planner can either be used upfront when deciding which exhibitors to visit, or in week 24 itself to facilitate the journey. Simply tick the locations, define a start and finish point and the planner does the rest.”

The route planner can be found on the FlowerTrials® website: https://www.flowertrials.com/en/route-planner

New Locations
Two locations have been added this year to the route. New exhibitors Hendriks and Green Works can be visited at the Hendriks location in 's-Gravenzande, while in the Aalsmeer region, De Zonnebloem Jonge Planten can be found at their own location in De Kwakel. Dümmen Orange has meanwhile moved within Westland and can now be found in Naaldwijk on the Bosweg. Details on all locations and addresses can be found on the FlowerTrials® website https://www.flowertrials.com/en/addresses.

Planning the assortment
Not only the journey, but also the assortment can be viewed upfront, making the selection of locations to visit easier and more effective. For each exhibitor, the FlowerTrials® website provides a product video, photos and an overview of the main 2017 introductions. In addition, an improved search field on the home page helps identify more accurately which crop matches which company. A new pot or bedding plant is presented daily on FlowerTrials® Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages and regular newsletters reveal the highlights of this year’s assortments.

About the FlowerTrials®
From 13th to 16th June, 59 pot and bedding plant breeders show their latest innovations in the Westland and Aalsmeer regions in The Netherlands and Rheinland Westfalen in Germany. Opening times are Tuesday to Thursday from 08.00 hours to 18.00 hours. On Friday doors close at 16.00 hours. Further information can be found at www.flowertrials.com.

Plant sales picked up last week, but the continued “not warm enough to get into the garden” weather meant volumes were still down 21% on the same week last year.

It will be interesting to see the result of the warmer, but wet, weather this week.
  • Bedding Geraniums (Pelargoniums) accounted for 10% of all plants sold last week.
  • The Top 10 plant genus groupings provided a third of plant sales.
  • Chrysanthemums saw the biggest percentage growth, up over 200%.

Celebrity chef Vivek Singh confirmed for Commercial Kitchen Keynote Q&A

The Cinnamon Collection's executive chef and founder Vivek Singh has been confirmed for a headline Keynote Q&A at Commercial Kitchen 2017.

The UK’s only dedicated event for catering equipment buyers and suppliers returns to the NEC Birmingham next month, on 6-7 June.

Singh’s ‘in conversation’ session, with fellow chef and restaurant consultant Jay Morjaria, is set to reveal exclusive insights into the inner workings of the kitchens and kit at the heart of his top London restaurants; including The Cinnamon Club (launched in 2001 and now considered a benchmark for fine dining Indian restaurants around the world), Cinnamon Kitchen, Cinnamon Soho, and Cinnamon Bazaar.

The author of five cookbooks (his sixth – Indian Festival Feasts, is set to be published next month), a regular face on the BBC’s Saturday Kitchen and MasterChef, and often featured in the national press, Singh is renowned as one of the most innovative Indian food chefs of his generation.  Much is known about his signature culinary style, which blends authentic, modern Indian flavours with Western techniques.  Much less so about the kitchen designs, equipment, training and practices that have helped steer his restaurants to success.  He’ll be talking about all that and more in this highly-anticipated session, starting at 11am on the show’s opening day (6 June).

"Commercial Kitchen is an important trade event, as it shows chefs the latest innovations and possibilities for their kitchens,” says Singh.  “I'm really passionate about the equipment that makes our kitchens work for our teams and customers, and I look forward to seeing my colleagues and peers at this inspiring industry event."

Singh isn’t the only professional chef lending his specialist expertise to speaker duties at Commercial Kitchen.  Previously confirmed big names include world-renowned pastry chef Claire Clark MBE – the first person in the UK, and only female recipient, to be awarded the Master of Culinary Arts for outstanding craftsmanship (formerly known as the ‘Meilleur Ouvrier de la Grande Bretagne’); Chris Knights, group executive chef at Young’s Pubs and Geronimo Inns; Kumour Uddin, group executive chef at Anglian Country Inns; and Robert Quehan, formerly of The Ivy and now head chef at The Redwood Bistro at Bishopstoke Park (the UK’s first retirement village to be awarded an AA Rosette for its food).

“Commercial Kitchen is the ideal place to source the most up-to date kitchen equipment on the market today.  Your kitchen will benefit from all the latest technology here – helping you run an effective and efficient kitchen, saving both time and money,” says Claire Clark MBE, owner and director of Pretty Sweet and The Claire Clark Academy for Patisserie Excellence.

Other new speakers, announced today, include James Douglas, co-founder and director at Red’s True Barbecue, Adele Hing, development manager (kitchen, equipment & food operations) at Nando's UK & Ireland, and Chris Webb, catering operations manager at Punch Taverns.  Douglas and Hing will be appearing in the ‘Multi-site restaurant kitchen panel’ alongside MEATliquor’s MD Scott Collins and, session chair, Peter Martin, VP of CGA Peach.  While Webb, who heads up the team responsible for menu development, kitchen design and menu implementation across Punch’s estate – joins Knights and Uddin in ‘The pub kitchen panel’, which is to be chaired by Steve Dann, director at Fleet Street Communications.

Graeme Loudon, commercial director at insights firm CGA Strategy, will also be making his show debut.  His session will give an overview of the current challenges facing operators across the market and how they are adjusting their offer and plans in response to the continued fallout from the Brexit vote.  He’ll also be revealing the key trends to watch and their potential impact on the size and shape of the market in the months to come (3.30pm, 6 June).

The Foodservice Consultants Society International (FCSI) are a new association partner for Commercial Kitchen 2017.  They are set to host an exclusive panel featuring five of the country’s leading foodservice consultants.  Chaired by Michael Jones, editor of FCSI’s Foodservice Consultant Magazine, the session will offer some great insight into best practices, standards and the tangible things that even the best consultants can do to become even better partners to their clients (1.15pm, 7 June).

FCSI panellists include Julian Edwards, chairman of FCSI (UK&I) and owner of GY5; Paul Arnold, project director at Tricon Foodservice Consultants; Roz Burgess, owner of Intelligent Catering; Duncan Hepburn, principal consultant at Hepburn Associates; and Radford Chancellor, director of Radford Chancellor

“With such a wide choice of innovative equipment under one roof, and leading industry keynotes from across all sectors of the foodservice industry, it’s a must attend event for consultants and end-users looking to stay ahead of the latest innovations and trends in this dynamic industry,” says Edwards.

“Commercial Kitchen offers the industry something unique, not only commercial catering equipment but also excellent, relevant seminars.  Our consultants, and a number of our clients, are looking forward to attending this exciting show,” says Chancellor.

As previously announced, CEDA – the show’s lead partner, will feature prominently in the seminar line-up.  The CEDA panel (12.30pm, 6 June) sees five of the association’s former chairs appearing together for the first time (including Mark Drazen, MD of Caterware; Nick Howe, MD of Court Catering Equipment; Peter Kitchin, MD of C&C Catering Equipment; Iain Munro, MD of ScoMac Catering Equipment; and Jack Sharkey MSc, MD of Vision Commercial Kitchens).

CEDA’s Foodservice Kitchen Design Panel (2pm, 6 June), also led by Clare Nicholls, editor of Catering Insight, unites the CEDA Grand Prix Award winners of Best Small, Best Medium and Best Large Projects – Clive Groom, MD of CNG Foodservice Equipment, Paul Gilhooly, head of sales at Gratte Brothers Catering Equipment, and Nick Howe, MD of Court Catering Equipment (respectively) – to discuss their cutting edge commercial kitchen design and execution.

While Adam Mason, CEDA’s director general, will also be appearing alongside senior representatives from The ALMR (Kate Nicholls), FCSI (Julian Edwards), and HCA (Philip Shelley) in a joint association panel discussion at 3.30pm on 7 June.

Commercial Kitchen will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, 6-7 June at the NEC Birmingham.  Show features include a free two-day seminar programme, the Innovation Challenge Awards, and CEDA Awards Gallery.

The event was recently shortlisted for two national awards – ‘Best Tradeshow Launch’ and ‘Best Tradeshow under 2,000sqm’ by the Association of Event Organisers.
